he upcoming fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things is scheduled to premiere in two volumes, the first premiering on May 27th, 2022 and the second on July 1st. The highly anticipated season introduces a new obstacle for “The Party” unlike anything they’ve ever encountered before. The new villain introduced in the final trailer, appears to be a humanized monster who narrates the majority of the trailer. Many theories are suggesting that Billy (who sacrificed himself to save the group in season three) may be the hybrid monster in the Upside Down. Trailer footage shows a new location called the “Creel House,” which is presumed to be haunted and possibly the home of the new villain. We also see the gang of teenagers split up because of Eleven and Will moving to California while the rest stay in Hawkins, Indiana. Last season, we saw Hopper supposedly die in the Russian secret base after a deadly explosion, but in earlier trailers for season four, we see Hopper being held prisoner in a Russian camp with a shaved head. We also saw Eleven lose her powers and in season four, she will learn how to live a normal life as a high school student. However, Dr. Sam Owens returns to seek help from Eleven due to a “war” that is a threat to her friends back home. Fans are expecting a darker and scarier version of the show due to the addition of a haunted house and the beginning of a war in Hawkins. This season will also be released in two volumes which has never been done before in the series. The season premiere will be on May 27th, 2022. Season 5 is confirmed to be the final season of the series.

“mega comet” with an estimated diameter of 80 miles wide, bigger than Rhode Island, is heading toward the direction Earth is in. For those who watched the Netflix film, “Don’t Look Up”, fear not, it is not as drastic. First discovered in 2010, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has recently helped researchers confirm the comet has the largest nucleus they have ever seen. Named C/2014 UN271, the comet has a nucleus 50 times larger than most comets. This behemoth has a mass estimated to 500 trillion tons. This is a hundred thousand more times than a normal comet. It is also traveling at 22,000 mph. Most likely coming from the edge of the solar system, the mega comet actually will not get too close to Earth. The closest it will get is about 1 billion miles away from the Sun. That is about the
same distance as Saturn. This close call also won’t happen until at least 2031. Discovered by astronomers Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein, they found the comet by looking through archival images. The images came from the Dark Energy Survey at the
Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. The Hubble Space Telescope captured five images of C/2014 UN271 on January 8. These were the images that confirmed

the giant size of its nucleus. Researchers then used a computer model to separate the solid nucleus from the enveloping space dust. They found the nucleus to be very dark. According to NASA, the temperatures on the comet are -348 degrees Farhrenheit (-193 degrees Celsius) and

the nucleus is blacker than coal. The large comet follows a three-million-yearlong elliptical orbit. At the moment, the comet is two billion miles away from the Sun. NASA claims that the comet nucleus is the largest one they have ever seen. The previous record-holder was a comet with a nucleus estimated at 60 miles across. This comet is C/2002 VQ94 and was discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project. Researchers say C/2014 UN271 is the first of many that are alike and farther away from the Sun. They believe the
comet most likely originated from the most distant region of our solar system. This region is known as the Oort Cloud. They believe trillions of comets can be found in this region. However, the Oort Cloud is still a theory. The hypothesis came more than 70 years ago, from Dutch astronomer Jan Oort. The Oort Cloud is theorized to be a large spherical dome surrounding our solar system. The cloud consists of icy comets much like C/2014 UN271 and all sizes alike. The Oort Cloud is thought to begin at 0.08 light years away from the Sun and extend to about 0.8 light years out. Trillions of comets are thought to be found there and the ones who make their way into the solar system are deemed long-period comets. NASA still hopes to find out more about the Oort Cloud and believes researching the aforementioned comet will provide further information. Hopefully through this research of a long period comet, it won't be too long until we know more about what lies above us.

CDC Extends Mask Mandate on Planes and Public Transit Federal government confirms mandate will end on May 3. Beatriz A. M artinez Reporter
beatriz.martinezortiz0021@my.riohondo.edu
L
ast Wednesday, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the mask mandate on planes and public transit would be extended nationwide for two more weeks, making this measure valid until May 3. This decision is due to the increase in new cases of COVID-19 across the nation. In the northwest of the country, the BA.2 Omicron subvariant takes hold, increasing the number of infections since the beginning of April. Currently the new subvariant BA.2 Omicron is 85% of cases throughout the country. The Biden administration is currently under pressure from a group of Republican legislators and even from the executive of the trade group Airlines for America to withdraw the extension of the mandatory use of masks. They assure that since the beginning of the year there has been a positive change in the pandemic because cases began to decline since winter. In late March, some largely Republican-led states sued the government. Their goal was for the government to immediately end the mask requirement. On the other hand, airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have also been pressuring the government to lift travel restrictions due to the pandemic, arguing that they now have air filter technology ◀
which makes the spread of the virus during a flight is unlikely. And that is not the only reason why airlines seek to remove the mask mandate since flight attendants have been victims of conflict with passengers who are refusing to use mask during a flight. According to the Federal Administration of Aviation Administration, until April 12, the number of incidents with passengers is 1,150. 744 of them were incidents related to the mask. However, this decision to put a mask requirement on buses, trains, and planes is an attempt by the government not to allow another wave of infections and to keep the virus under control. “CDC will continue to monitor COVID-19 levels, in our communities, nationally, and abroad to provide the most up-to-date guidance to keep travelers safe and healthy,” said CDC in a statement last Wednesday. The mask mandate was set to expire on April 18, however, the CDC said that the virus is still a threat that continues to exist among Americans, and they should not let their guard down. The CDC also said it will update its travel health advisory system for international destinations to make it easier for passengers to know when travel to a specific destination is not recommended. This new update brings a new feature that will allow users to be notified of special situations such as the appearance of a new variant or a rapid increase in cases.

The Mask of Zorro Isn't Exactly Mexican, Even if it's Based on Mexican Characters
Jeffrey Barragan for El Paisano Media "The Mask of Zorro" (1998) is set in the Los Angeles, Cali. Other Mexican and Mexican American movies of the 1990s are set in the City, but "The Mask of Zorro" doesn't star mexican actors." Ryan Leon

he 1990s was a period of revDuring the 1990s, around a half-dozen mainstream Mexican and Mexican American movies were released. But to start and end the decade, two movies, which at first sight look to be just that, Mexican or Mexican American movies, fail to capture the experience in a fitting and appropriate way in retrospect. In 1998, “The Mask of Zorro” hit theaters. The movie starred Antonio Banderas. Earlier in the 1990s, Banderas
starred in films like “Desperado” and its sequel “El Mariachi,” part of the Mexico Trilogy, before taking on the role of Zorro. He later starred in the first three “Spy Kids” movies. The release of “The Mask of Zorro” was the final major movie of the decade to feature a story about people of Mexican descent. But in 1992, “Desperado” was seemingly the first movie of the decade to be set in Mexico and about Mexican people and culture. It was released just weeks before “American Me.” But that’s where things get a little weary. “The Mask of the Zorro” doesn’t belong on the
same list or the same category as classic 1990s Mexican American films like “Blood in Blood Out,” “Mi Vida Loca,” “My Family,” or “Selena,” regardless if the story is indeed set around Los Angeles, Calif. The character of Zorro, although supposed to be a Mexican character, was created by a white man named Johnston McCulley in the final year of the 1910s. Then, in 1920 a white man starred as the Mexican lead in the first movie with the title, “The Mask of the Zorro.” The story is based entirely on McCulley’s fictional writing. The 1920 version of the movie appeared in theaters in
the US. It stars Douglas Frank as “El Zorro,” a Mexican bandit and vigilante hero existing in Southern California during the Mexican-American War. Douglas later starred as a similar, far more ethnically appropriate character, known as “Robin Hood.” But more white men continued to portray the character, including in the 1940 and 1970 reboots of the movie. Some 78 years later, the 1998 release of “The Mask of Zorro” again features a white Spanish actor as the main protagonist. Despite being created by a white writer and played by several white actors across seven decades, the character itself is thought to be based on Salomon Pico, a Mexican and Californio. Interestingly, Salomon was the cousin of Pio Pico. In fact, Pio at one point owned a Ranch near present-day Rio Hondo College. But while Salomon’s later life is believed to have been a legendary existence that led to the creation of a wellknown fictional character, Pio is believed to have died poor and
without his rancho. The legend of Salomon was, in turn, adapted as a short story that became a part of US capitalism and turned into money. That’s hard to get past when a good examination of Zorro’s clothing decision and arsenal hints more at the fact that he looks more Spanish than Mexican. His weapon of choice is a Rapier, a Western European sword. In addition, his hat doesn’t slightly resemble a sombrero that a Californio would still likely use in the mid-1800s. The release of “The Mask of Zorro” in 1998 also meant it was the final movie to really represent some form of depiction of Mexican and Mexican American culture in that decade. But it’s the casting and history behind the story that ultimately hurts it. In retrospect, it can also be said about an iconic movie like 1980s “Scarface.” The film is based on Cuban immigrants living in Florida, yet the Italian-American Al Pacino portrays the main character.
Jeffrey Barragan for El Paisano Media El Ranchito in Whittier, Calif. was owned by Pio Pico during the mid-19th Cenutyr. Pio is the cousin of Solomon Pico who is thought to be the inspiration behind the character Zorro.

The Reign Continues its Winning Way!

T
he Reign Girls Football Club of West Covina came down in both out of state tournaments as victors, first in St. George Utah and in Bullhead City, AZ within a four month period. Soccer is very intense because it's a high cardio type of sport that these girls go all out at practice and at games to be at the top of their game. Fruthermore, these young female athletes have gotten great exposure from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the City of West Covina, a sponsorship from the ELLA Sports Foundation, and other top high schools outside of the area and in the San Gabriel Valley are in contact with the parents and team based on their performances at the tournaments. This powerhouse football club’s first out of state tournament was victorious at the 7 Elite Academy Soccer Tournament in early February in St. George, Utah. The weather conditions being unbearable to stay warm and dealing with coldness. As for the three day tournament play, the young girls won the first game but fell short in the second game and stayed in the tournament with a win in the third game by points scored, and other teams losing. Overall the weather conditions didn’t fear the California team

other plans with the high temperature of heat and gusty wind and dust storms all tournament long. Mother Nature did not stop the girls from dominating the three day tournament by shutting out three of the four teams they played against to make it to the final against fellow California team, LA Power of El Segundo. Thereafter, Reign defeated their fellow California team by the score of 4-2 during a tough and windy intense
ing team away from any goals that came her way and held them to two goals to maintain a lead and secure a victory for the Reign team. Goalie Coach Antoine Le touches on Jazlynn Camacho’s pace of play. “She works very hard at practice and lot of it is repeative and once she understands that then it’s going to become instinct during game time.” In Contrast, these two tournaments made the girls have a
tight bond and it really reflects on and off the field. Most of the games were pretty consistant on the way they played every tournament game. Head Coach Gilbert Castruita is very proud of the team and mentions what these tournaments mean to the team. “The tournaments gave the girls confidence and now the City of West Covina and their sponsor ELLA Sports Foundation are watching them, as for the other teams that are watching them they are getting nervous. “ Overall, this team is on a whole other level from an offensive and defensive point of you all tournament long in AZ. All thanks to their powerful strikes, kicks, and touches to the goals that gave them 22 goals and 7 of them came from #37 Jordyn Le. She elobrated on what the goals meant to her and experience at the end of the River Daze Tournament. “The seven goals were a great confidence booster, but I know we still have work to do. It was a great moment when Coach Gil stopped the medal ceremony to remind everyone that I had the most goals in the tournament. There are times where I am not too confident in myself, but the Arizona tournament really boosted my confidence. It showed me that hard work and practice really paid off.”
Jordyn also added, she is fairly new to the team so contributing to the team is also important to me. I missed out on the Utah tournament where Reigh won the championship. So she felt like she had to win this one for Reign. There were a lot of missed opportunities and mistakes that could have turned into more goals scored during the River Daze Tournament that the coaching staff noticed. Usually in tournaments the more goals a team scores the better chances they have to advance but, if mistakes are made during those win or go home games, then that opponent can capitalize on the mistakes. Coach Segrio Rueda on fixing those mistakes in the future. “What we are going to do is work on the gaps like passing the ball in the middle when nobody is open in the practice with some drills focusing on the players without the ball understands to find an open space in the field.” The Reign Football Club has what it takes to do big things, not just on field but in the classroom as student athletes trying to receive an athletic scholarship through soccer and a degree in the future of their choice. They obviously believe these tournaments are just a stepping stone to what’s to come next as one team, one unit, one heartbeat.
NCAA Women’s Softball Division I Top 20 Ranking Molly McCormick Sports Editor

W
ith the start of the 2022 Women’s Softball season, there is so much drive and excitement to look forward to. With the Oklahoma Sooners winning the Division I title last year, do you think they have the will and potential to win it again? Right now they are number one in the NCAA top twenty rankings as of April 10th, 2022. With an overall record of 36 wins and 5 losses. They are the only team right now that remains undefeated. Following them is the Alabama Crimson in second with a record of 33 wins and 5 losses. They are having a great season so far but they still haven’t won a championship since 2012. Could this be the year they bring a championship home? Coming in third is the Virginia Tech HokieBirds with a record of 29 wins and 5 losses. So far they haven't won a championship yet but could this be the year? Not far behind is the Florida State Seminoles with a record of 37 wins and 4 losses. They are currently in fourth and won their last championship in 2018. They are currently having a great season and I see them
making it into the finals. Now we have one of the fan favorites, the UCLA Bruins. They currently ranked fifth with a record of 32 wins and 5 losses. The last championship they won was back in 2019. They currently have the talent to go all the way but it is all up to them. Next, we have the Arkansas Razorbacks. They currently sit in sixth with a record of 28 wins and 7 losses. So far they haven’t won a championship yet but that should be no reason to doubt them. Then right behind them, we have the Northwestern Wildcats with a record of 27 wins and 6 losses. That puts them in seventh place as of right now and they haven’t won a championship yet but they could go all the way with the freshman they just recruited. Up next we have the Oklahoma State Cowboys with a record of 31 wins and 7 losses. They are currently eighth in the rank and yet again they are another team that hasn't brought a championship Not far behind were the Duke Blue Devils that are currently in ninth with 32 wins and 5 losses. Even though they have zero championships that could change in just one season. Following them is the Florida Gators that have a record of wins and 6 losses and they
are in tenth place. Now the last championship they won was back in 2015. So if these girls can do it once before, can they do it again? Coming in eleventh we have the Arizona State Sun Devils with a record of 28 wins and 5 losses. They won their last championship back in 2011. Who knows what they have in store for this season. Next we have the Kentucky Wildcats currently in twelfth place with a record of 27 wins and 9 losses. They might not have won a championship yet, let's no doubt them because you never know. Not far behind them were
the Georgia Bulldogs. They currently sit in thirteenth place with a record of 33 wins and 8 losses. So far they haven’t won a championship yet but they have a good team so far. Not far behind them is the Texas Longhorns in fourteenth place with a record of 30 wins and 10 losses and 1 tie. Again we have another team with no championship but still a team with potential and drive. Then we have the Washington Huskies. They are in fifteen place and have a record of 27 wins and 11 losses. The last time they won a championship was back in 2009. That’s a long time, so can these girls do it

As the Oregon Ducks prepare for their 2022 season, they take the field with their number one goal, to make it to this years NCAA Women's World Series.
once again? Up next we have the Tenesse Volunteers that are in sixteenth place with a record of 26 wins and 12 losses. Even though they haven’t won a championship, they are still a great team. Then right behind them we have the Clemson Tigers in seventeenth place with a record of 30 wins and 10 losses. Again we have another team with no championship but still a team with great talents. Coming in eighteenth place is the UCF Knights with a record 34 wins and 10 losses. They are still a fantastic team even though they don;t have any championships. Next we have the Oregan State Beavers with a record of 31 wins and 9 losses, currently in nineteenth place. Even though they have a championship doesn't make them a bad team. Last but least we have the Oregon Ducks in twentieth place with a record of 24 wins and 11 losses. Still no championships but they have their whole future ahead of them. All these teams have the drive and greatness to make it to Oklahoma City where the 2022 Women's World Series will be held. I look forward to watching them girls have an all round great season.
