So ends another JACC conference. The 2019 Journalism Association of Community Colleges held its Southern California Conference Saturday, October 19. The conference was held at the University of California, Fullerton from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Schools from all across SoCal attended the
event - from Saddleback College to Cerritos College. The event featured seven different competitions, as well as more than a dozen workshops for students to enhance their skills as journalists. Students were not only able to compete against each other but also had the chance to share amongst each other the experiences they’ve had in the journalism field. With the workshops even providing knowledge
about internships and techniques done by people in the professional field. Rio Hondo experience was surely a great one as we walked away with 6 awards and lots of new insight. The next big trip for the journalism crew is not until next spring where JACC will host their State competition in Burbank. So please cheer on the newspaper team on their next competition!

New California Law Makes it Legal to Eat Roadkill

Looking to diversify your food options? A new option will be available to you: roadkill.
Saturday, October 13, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill 395, which will allow people
to salvage and eat roadkill. The bill, also known as the Wildlife Traffic Safety Act, will allow drivers to take home roadkill struck unintentionally by their vehicle. This includes deer, elk, and wild pigs. People who stumble upon the carcasses may also take them home. The law goes into effect in 2022. Until then, the Department of Fish and Wildlife will be developing a permitting process -which will be available as an app that would allow people to obtain a permit to salvage the animals they find. To obtain the permit, people would need to provide information about the animals, such as where they were found and the events (if known) leading up to their death. If the animal is still alive after being struck, then the Department of Fish and Wildlife would need to decide if the animal should be put down. Once put down, the animal will be available to salvage. Sponsored by State Senator Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera), the bill seeks to decrease the waste of wild game meat and to make roads
safer for drivers and animals. The hope is to collect data on where most animals are being struck by vehicles.
“When you look at the statistics, the number of injuries and accidents and fatalities, it’s about time,” said Senator Archuleta. “If we can save one life, save one animal, I think we’ve done the right thing here.” The Mercury News reported that the University of California, Davis estimates that around 20,000 deer are killed on California roads every year. The new law stated that this “potentially translates into hundreds of thousands of pounds of healthy meat that could be used to feed those in need.” Prior to the bill passing, eating roadkill was illegal and “unlawful possession of wildlife” would lead to a $6,000 fine, as well as six months in jail.

An attempted police bribe occured in Norwalk, Connecticut after suspect was arrested for drunken-driving charges. Sunday, October 20, police responded to reports of an erratic driver going down
Main Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Police were told of a white Ford pickup truck driving on the opposite side of the road, nearly hitting several cars before pulling into a 7-Eleven parking lot. The driver was identified as 40-year-old Stephen Rasmussen, who was seen stumbling
around by 7-Eleven customers. When police arrived, they found Rasmussen sitting inside his truck, which was still running. Police said Rasmussen smelled like alcohol, and when they asked him for his driver’s license, he handed them his electronic cigarette
instead. In the middle of his sobriety test, Rasmussen allegedly became distracted by music from a nearby store and asked police if he could dance instead. Police said that when it “became clear he was being arrested,” Rasmussen grabbed a “large amount of cash” and offered it to the officer to let him walk free.
The officer tried to place handcuffs on him, which prompted a struggle. Rasmussen was arrested and charged with bribery, driving under the influence, failure to return a license, and interfering with an officer. He was held on $15,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court October 31.

Women’s soccer grabs first conference win JESUS MARQUEZ Reporter
jesus.marquez1625@my.riohondo.edu
Coming off from a dominating 9-1 win against Pasadena City College last Tuesday, the Rio Hondo Women’s soccer team continued their good form after beating LA Harbor 2-0 on Friday, October 18. In a close and complicated match, the lady Roadrunners were able to pull off a win against the Seahawks in their first conference game. The Roadrunners started the game exceptional by keeping the ball in possession and pressing their rivals well. After five minutes of good football, Rio forward Vivian Viramontes found Serina Vargas for a wonderful goal from inside the box. La Harbor tried to equalize the game, but the lady Roadrunners defense was impressive throughout the first half. The Seahawks had trouble creating chances and were forced to play a more defensive style, trying to avoid a second goal. Rio Hondo looked to notch their second goal of the game, but struggled to reach
the final third. As the game progressed, LA Harbor began to press, battling for possession of the ball. The game remained dull in the last five minutes of the first half as Rio Hondo and LA Harbor had problems creating scoring chances. After a very even first half for both teams, LA Harbor began to cause problems in the opening ten minutes of the second period. The lady Seahawks were close to tie things up, but Rio Hondo goalkeeper Anaguisel Ramos kept the Roadrunners alive with four great saves in a short period of time. The Roadrunners began to pick up the pace and got into the game once again. They began to create dangerous chances but were unable to take advantage of them. Physical fitness and mentality were the key differences between both teams in the last 20 minutes of the game. The Roadrunners played with passion and showed no signs of slowing down against a tough side. Meanwhile, LA Harbor began to get tired, losing control of the game. The lady Roadrunners finally doubled their lead

World Series: Astros vs Nationals MARISSA VALENZUELA Reporter
marissa.valenzuela0167@my.riohondo.edu
For the second time in three seasons, the Houston Astros are headed back to the World Series. This was all due to a winning walk off homer that Jose Altuve hammered out the stadium. In the ninth inning of Game 6 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees, Altuve nailed a two run walk-off home run that sent Minute Maid park into a craze. Whereas the Washington Nationals overcame the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-4, on Tuesday night, ending a four-game sweep in the NLCS. This will be the Nationals first ever appearance in the World Series, let alone
winning a pennant. Game 1 of the World Series will take place in Houston. Nationals are heavily reliant on their pitching rotation. The Nationals made it to playoffs with Cy Young contender Max Scherzer, Stephen Stratsburg, Patrick Corbin and Animal Sanchez, all of whom will be key to winning the title. However, the Astros now on had an average offense heading into the post season: they had one of the best. Houston won their 2017 World Series title with the best offense in MLB. On the other hand, the Astros have their best pitchers ready for a square being Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander, and Zack Greinke all of whom can aid into a possible second World Series title.

Rio Hondo’s volleyball team saw their three game winning streak come to an end after losing 3-0 to the visiting Lancers of Pasade-
na City College on Friday, October 18. Rio came into the match having beaten LA Harbor College, Mt. San Antonio College, and Cerritos College by a combined score of 9-2, including a 3-0 sweep against Mt. SAC. The first set started off well enough, with Rio taking a
While the Astros will continue to have their home field advantage, it’s not out of the question that Washington could score a win at Minute maid Park. Nevertheless, on the road this postseason, Washington is 4-1. Nearly right after the Astros took the American League pennant, they were already a favorite to win the world championship. For many, its not hard to see why. Astros had initially thought their biggest competition would be the Los Angeles Dodgers, who didn’t make it past the NLDS. The polls seem to have forgotten that the Nationals, after beating the Dodgers, swept the Cardinals without letting them hold a lead in any of the four games.
Astros have many strengths within their clubhouse that are undeniable. They have considerable the most complete team, with a pitching staff to go down in history as one of the era’s greatest if they complete a title win. Adding to that, having an offensive lineup with Michael Brantley, Jordan Alvarez, and hero Jose Altuve. Good pitching in theory always out beats good hitting. Where in the NLCS the Nationals have some of the best and hottest pitchers in baseball. Thanks to their pitchers and sweep, they have a weeks’s worth of rest in advance to the Series. Though the odds are in the Astros favor, its not too late to count the Nationals out. Even though they may not
have made it here without lucky breaks, such as a crucial error in the Wild Card game, they still have earned their spot and have the skills to give us a World Series to remember.
6-2 lead. Rio hung in there, cutting into the lead 22-20. Defensive errors by the Lady Roadrunners ultimately cost them the set, with the Lancers winning 25-21. P asadena started the second set with a commanding 12-6 lead. When the set was tied up at 16, Rio scored a kill to take a brief 17-16 lead, but a service error from the lady Roadrunners and a PCC spike, gave the Lancers the lead, which they would not relinquish. The Lady Road-
runners gained some late momentum, with the set at 24-20, Rio rattled off three unanswered points thanks to a few errors by PCC (service error, failed dig, too many touches). But it would be PCC who would score the final kill, and win the set 25-23. The third set offered a glimmer of hope, with Rio taking a short-lived 3-2 lead. That would be the Lady Roadrunners’ only lead of the set. Defensive errors and a great offense from the Lanc-
ers made it difficult for Rio Hondo to keep that lead and ultimately fall 15-9 halfway through the set.. The Lancers went on to win the set 25-15, thanks to a PCC spike that bounced off a Rio defender and landed out of bounds. The loss drops the Lady Roadrunners to 10-7 on the season and 4-4 against conference rivals. Rio will travel next to Long Beach City College and take on the 12-6 Vikings on Wednesday, October 23.

Rio Hondo is taking the time to celebrate Mexican culture with Día de los Muertos with a month-long event of displaying an altar, or “ofrenda,” in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). Students will be able to see traditional sugar skulls on display along with pan dulce and well-known herbs that are used in popular Mex-
ican dishes. The altar itself follows the color scheme of the building with the yellow and orange paper décor, with candles spread throughout, providing a dark orange lighting to the display. The altar is designed by visual and theatrical artist Martha Carrillo, who has hosted other Dia de los Muertos-related projects these past few weeks. In addition to the altar, Carrillo recently led a workshop of creating Día

Hood Herbalism had its first workshop at Rio Hondo last week in the Lower Quad by the library. The workshop went on from 12:30pm to 2:00pm and focused on what an everyday person can do with plant ingredients, such as making homemade mosquito repellent, a tea and aromatherapy roll-on oil. The few dozen participants that showed up were separated into three different groups to work on making three different products from herbalism. The ingredients were available in abundance such as Lemon

Founder and program director of Hood Herbalism Bernice Dimas stated that she has been running the program since 2016. “What inspired me to start Hood Herbalism is when I was going to herbal school, I realized that not a lot of people in the community have the capacity to go to herbal school. And some folks still practice this at home with their families, and some people don’t because it has been lost for various reasons. So when I came back to L.A., I realized I wanted to Hood Herbalism for the community.” Taylor Buchwald, a student at
Rio Hondo and participant in the workshop, stated that she felt the workshop was a cool experience. “It is really interesting that you can use all of this stuff naturally,” Buchwald said. “Instead of having to go to the store to buy it, you can make it.” Another student participant, Daisy Mendoza, said, “I am going to school for this so, as soon as I heard about it I had to come. It’s cool to see natural remedies in practice.” Dimas stated that there are currently plans for Hood Herbalism to return to Rio Hondo College in the foreseeable future.

Review: ‘JoJo Rabbit’ is a Charming Film from a World of Satire JAIME APARICIO Reporter
jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
JAIME APARICIO / EPM A few props from “JoJo Rabbit” on display in the main room of the Cinerama Dome. If you are a lover of cinema or enjoy seeing props used in the actual film, the theater in Hollywood is the perfect place to watch Waititi’s latest release.
The director of such known films as “What We Do In The Shadows” and “Thor: Ragnarok” brings a very special motion picture that delivers a much needed message of acceptance and understanding. Taika Waititi’s latest film “JoJo Rabbit” tells of a young boy’s experience in a Nazi training camp towards the end of World War II, and Waititi himself plays the role of the boy’s imaginary friend Adolf Hitler. The premise of JoJo Rabbit is taken from the 2004 novel Caging Skies by Christine Leunens and is wonderfully adapted for today’s audience. Waititi has gathered an ensemble of great actors to pull off a story that involves a heavy dose of laughter and emotion. In the film, we are introduced to the actor Roman Griffin Davis who plays the title role of JoJo Betzler. It’s hard to believe that this
is the young actor’s first major role to date because of the range of acting that he portrays in the film. For the majority of the time he’s on screen, Davis shows that he can hold his own when he is sharing scenes with other great actors such as Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant, Rebel Wilson and, of course, Waititi. But without giving away any of the film’s plot, whenever Davis needed to evoke emotion, he did with such ease that he will convince you that the young actor’s career can only possibly get better from here on out. Another fairly new actress in the film is New Zealand’s Thomasin McKenzie, who plays Elsa Korr, a young Jewish girl who is hiding from the Nazis in JoJo’s home. The part of JoJo’s mother is Scarlett Johansson, who indeed adds her own natural act of comedy and drama to the overall plot of the story. Young actor Archie Yates, who plays JoJo’s bestfriend Yorki, also shares the
breakout star spotlight. Every time Davis and Yates shared a scene together, it can be said that nothing short of comedy gold is seen with those two going back and forth by just merely talking about their daily lives or adapting to their situation presented in the film. With “JoJo Rabbit” only being shown in select theaters, it would be a shame if the film doesn’t get the full recognition it deserves and should, by all means, be considered to be nominated in next years Academy Awards. Do yourself the favor and track down the nearest theater showing the film for you will not be disappointed.

Whittier Hosts Contemporary Latino Palette at Local Gallery CYNTHIA OLVERA Reporter

The Whittier Art Gallery is hosting the “Contemporary Latino Palette” now until October 26. There are fourteen artists that have their work on display at the gallery, which has a mixture of photography, digital art, and medium painting. The exhibit is a representation of the artists’ cultural roots with their own contemporary twist. Rich Raya is a native of Los Angeles whose art preferences are oils and acrylics. During the early 70’s, he started creating more urban and environmental themes that represented the Chicano culture. Raya also dabbles in impressionism, realism, and illustration. He displayed a painting of a blue 1952 Chevy and in the back is a storefront with East Los Music shop. A great representation of the car culture that
still thrives today in East LA. Another intriguing piece was his painting titled “Chicana Mermaids in Monterey Bay.” The artwork was of five mermaids in the water that seemingly were posing as if a photograph was being taken. The mermaids have traditional Latina features and are floating tall with their heads held high. Artists Eloy Torrez also has his art on display at the Whittier Gallery, although he is one of the few that isn’t a native to Los Angeles. Torrez is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He moved to California with his family at age 13 and attended the Otis Art Institute in 1977. The majority of his paintings are on the human figure and psychological circumstances, and the work is mostly made out of oil paint on canvas or metal. Torrez’s piece at that gallery is titled “Man with Hammer,” and is drawn with charcoal on paper. The drawing shows a man with a

It’s a representation of the working class in the city, the material used to draw this is significant to the meaning of the photo. There are also some other artists with only a few pieces on display. Juliane Backmann has a photo titled “Urban Menudo” and it is compiled of a series of photos with shots of signs all over East LA. The play on the title of the photo fits perfectly with what Backmann was
trying to accomplish. Photographer Domingo Rodriguez dedicates this show to display Downtown LA and the different sides of the city. Rodriquez is different in the sense that he does not show the Chicano culture side of the city, but the product of the culture. He has a photo titled “The Influence,” which shows a woman with her hands in her hair and her body language suggesting she is underdressed. Around her are walls that are all tagged on and trash all over the floor. Being from the Chicano
culture means that you have to tolerate the disadvantages that are presented to you and the different roads others go down. If you want to see an exhibit that displays the different sides of the Latino culture, the Contemporary Latino Pallet will is opened Wednesday through Sunday, from 1p.m. to 5p.m. For more information regarding the exhibit, visit the Fremont Gallery website (www.fremontgallery.net).

Fortnite Talk Going On In The Gaming World. What Is It all about?
ILLUSTRATION BY JAIME APARICIO / EPM The black hole debacle has come and gone, and now players can fully utilize some of the new features included in the games next iteration. Included in Chapter 2 of Fortnite, players can enjoy activities such as swimming, riding motorboats, and using upgraded rocket launchers and new semi-automatic pistols to help against the online competition. One of the biggest most popular games in the world was recently unplayable and inaccessible for nearly 48 hours, beginning Oct. 13, 2019. Assumptions were that it was possible a new season was in the making, or a completely new chapter was being developed. Due to the game Fortnite being down several times before it was also widely believed that
when it started working again it would just be a rebooted version with a new map as it has always been running. The way this problem expanded was in a dramatic fashion. It all began when the meteor that had been static in the middle of the island since its first appearance at the start of season X, was acting up and eventually obliterated the entire map approximately 2:00 PM EST. Ever since then, the players were unable to do anything other than just
stare at a black hole. Though there have been flickers of activity in the game but not to a certain extent in which it worked efficiently and smoothly without any technical difficulties. For other players their situation was different. For instance, if they were not already logged in the game at the time the event occurred, they were also unable to log into the actual lobby and character screen, since those areas were also
pulled into the same black hole that caused all the malfunctions. With all this going on there was a point in which the official Fortnite Twitter account deleted all of its tweets, including Epic’s public Trello board, which was essential to tracking in-game issues in addition to projecting an error and going fully black. As the problem continued, PlayStation had to issue a statement confirming that the game and all of those
V-bucks being spent weren’t gone for good. Fortunately, after the long awaited 48 hours early Tuesday morning Oct. 15, 2019 the completely reworked island, and the launch of the game’s next season was available. Officially Fortnite Chapter 2 was featured and a brand-new world full of activities and hidden challenges, as well as an updated visual style and interface, and plenty of small but effective changes to how the game can be played.

When it comes to describing video games as a form of art, every gamer would most likely have their own opinions as to which games would fit that description. If any video game deserves to be called art in every sense of the word, it’s Okami. Now twelve years later since its debut, original director of the game Hideki Kamiya has come to social media with former employee of Gameworks Ikumi Nakamura to tease a potential sequel to the beloved classic. October 18 saw Nakamura take to her Twitter account revealing what could be a possible announcement for a future installment in the series. On Twitter, Kamiya is seen in a video stating that, “Okami is going to be back,” with Nakamura writing in her tweet adding, “We want to make Okami sequel and fans are looking forward to it too. You guys want to see Kamiya’s Okami again, right, everyone? Although the game received high scores and reviews from gaming websites, the game did not perform financially well as much as Clover Studio and Capcom expected it to. With an initial $8 million in sales, the studios behind the game did not automatically feel the need to continue the story until 2011’s Okamiden with Mobile and Game Studio Inc. taking over development and Capcom once again publishing the

Who Are Favorites to qualify in the Champions League Knock Rounds JESUS MARQUEZ Reporter
jesus.marquez1625@my.riohondo.edu
The Champions League is one of the most competitive competitions in Europe and big clubs participate in this amazing soccer tournament. However, there are a lot of opinions on who is going to actually win the cup this year. The Competition is host to 32 teams and they are drawn into eight groups of four teams, and play each other in a double round-robin system. After the eight group winners and eight runners-up are staged, the teams advance to the knockout rounds. Popular teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain F.C., F.C. Bayern Munich and Juventus are always favorites to win the title. But, this season it will be difficult for these clubs to advance in the final. Last year Liverpool clinched their 6th title after beating Tottenham hotspur 2-0 in Madrid. Next week the Champions league matchday 3 will finally start after a long international break and will be entertaining to watch. Napoli and the current champions should qualify in the next round.
In Group F, which is the group of death, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan will fight for first and second place. Meanwhile the weakest team Slavia Prague may surprise the three Eurpean giants. by critics, with the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw calling Pattinson’ performance “mesmeric” and a “sledgehammer punch.” Now, granted, we’ve seen “good” actors get cast as Batman only for the end product to flop - looking at you, Val Kilmer and George Clooney. But - BUT, have no fear, dear readers. This itera-
tion of Batman will not flop, and I will tell you why in the next paragraph. Matt Reeves is a pretty good filmmaker. I may be cheating a bit with this one, but what’s an actor without a director, right? Prior to helming “The Batman,” Reeves directed the last two “Planet of the Apes” movies: 2014’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Both films were universally praised by critics, with both films holding a 91% and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. Reeves has been attached to the project since 2017 and began writing the script in June of 2018, so he’s had plenty of time to work on the film. I could’ve given you more reasons why Pattinson will be a great Batman, but I felt the three reasons above were suffice. We’ll find out soon enough, as “The Batman” will hit theaters June 25, 2021.

The issue of mental health in athletes, specifically college athletes, is overlooked, and neglected. As athletes, we’re told to put sports first, but as students we’re told to put school first, and at home, family comes first. But we are never told to put ourselves first, or our mental health for that matter. Former libero from the University of Southern California, Victoria Garrick ambas become a role model to many athletes all over the world. Aside from being a defensive specialist at one of the highest universities, she has become well known for her Ted Talk on mental health and how it affects athletes. As athletes we are expected to give our best performance every time they step on the court, or field or pool. We’re told that all issues are to be left outside because it’s game time and nothing else should matter. A mental illness is an unseen injury that affects
KATHERINA O’BRIEN / EPM Mental Health is a big issue on college campuses with having school work, social life, and family needing to be balanced in students lives. one in four people .Physical injuries are treated because they’re visual. But when one is having an issue mentally, not many actions are taken because many don’t understand them. In the athletic community, mental health is
viewed as weakness, and to ‘shake it off’. Bringing strong is more than just the condition of one’s body, it includes the mind as well. The pressure to play at a high level, achieve top grades, maintain a certain body type, handle inter-
personal relationships, and balance the everyday stress of being in college is taking its toll on the mental health of student-athletes across the country.
