editor’s page

Once November arrives, this happens: I think about all the guests I’ll soon have, and I make a crazy-ambitious to-do list. Paint the living room—even the ceiling! Grow an indoor herb garden to season Thanksgiving side dishes! Get new bedding for the guest room! One time, the night before my sisters arrived, I actually googled “24-hour monogram shop,” hoping to make a late-night run to get their initials stitched onto pillow shams. (For the record: No such place exists.) If, like me, you want to make family and friends extra happy but your enthusiasm spins out of control, here’s a keep-it-sane dos-and-don’ts list inspired by stories in this issue: • Don’t spend hours browsing “Thanksgiving tabletop” on Pinterest. Do have fun mixing (not matching) place mats and napkins (see page 99). • Don’t kick of any major home-improvement projects. Do focus on small changes of scenery, like afordable art (page 37) and cozy finds (page 42). • Don’t go nuts with your guest bedroom. Do try easy ideas like the ones on page 76. • Don’t reinvent your Thanksgiving menu. Stick with family favorites (what everyone wants anyway) and try a tweak or two. Me, I’ll be making the pumpkin pie with maple whipped cream on page 103. Get excited, family!

A 40-inch-square framed photo from Etsy shop Myan Soia makes a big impact and brings a hit of light to the dark wall. The retro bar sign in the image is a quirky nod to the bar tray on the bufet.

ive years after buying their 1950 center-hall Colonial in Somerville, NJ, Jessy and Karim Fofana were still staring at the same hopelessly dated dining room set that was purchased by Jessy’s mom at Goodwill for $200—and leaving piles of mail and the kids’ backpacks on it…until they cleared it for holiday dinners. The table had served its purpose: Jessy used to run her public relations business from their old place, and it gave her somewhere to spread out. By the time they moved into this house, she’d rented oice space. Still, the set came with them. “Our dining room needed help, but it was last on our priority list—we had major work to do on the house,” says Jessy. HGTV Magazine to the rescue! Out went the unloved dining set, and in its place came a sleek walnutfinish table and woven leather chairs. The buffet got revived with bright white paint. Chic green for the walls, new lighting, and a diamond-print rug turned the room into a jewel box. “The old furniture made it look like we were kids in a first apartment with hand-me-downs,” says Jessy. “Now we feel like actual grown-ups.”

30 HGTV Magazine

wall color and mirrors “The greige walls had to go,” says Jessy. “I just worried green paint would make us feel like we lived in a pub. But it turned out so modernelegant and really stepped up the room.” The arrangement of rattan mirrors—a gallery wall alternative—adds a cool 3-D element.

table and chairs

An oval table from allmodern.com looks contemporary and clean—the opposite of its turned-leg predecessor. Woven leather dining chairs from wisteria.com are way more comfy and stylish than the former clunkers. “I always thought upholstered dining room chairs were a must, but these are awesome!” says Jessy.

fun decorating

shade Since there’s a radiator below the window, Jessy couldn’t hang long drapes. So she put up simple white blinds and called it a day. A stripy burnt orange Roman shade (made with fabric by Robert Allen) brings energetic color and pattern to the space.

rug The traditional rug had to go. “Anytime I tried to buy a rug in the past, I’d start looking, get overwhelmed, and give up,” says Jessy. The winner: this ivory rug from West Elm with a small-scale pattern— neutral but not bland.

32 HGTV Magazine

lighting “We hated the generic black metal fixture that came with the house, but we never dealt with it,” says Jessy. A brass-finish chandelier with angled arms and shades by Hudson Valley Lighting feels fresh and bright. Sconces by Mitzi play of the fixture and cast mood lighting up and down.

before

bufet It was part of the original dining set; painting it white (Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore) transformed it from frumpy to fabulous. You can still see the carved detailing, and the original black hardware pops. “It looks so much better,” says Jessy, “but I have to admit, it’ll take some time till I stop thinking of it as ‘that old thing!’ ”

After placing a curved-frame velvet number (from Jayson Home) in this den in St. Louis, MO, she put in a vintage side table for snacks, a rich brown leather pouf (from Serena & Lily) for stretching out, and a swing-arm lamp (by Visual Comfort) for catching every bit of a good book. a richly colored master bathroom Sure, you can go with whites and grays to make a bathroom feel all chill…or you could paint your vanity a lush, not-theleast-bit-subtle green. “The color brings the outside in, so it’s fresh and relaxing,” says designer Jasmin Reese. She went with a modern farmhouse vibe for this bathroom in a Chicago townhouse, complete with shiplap painted black and barn-style sconces from Satco. It has the ahhh of a spa—and a dash of oooh, too.

esigner Brian Patrick Flynn had ambitious plans for the HGTV Urban Oasis 2018: “I wanted the house to have lots of color and be high energy, to play off its urban setting, but also feel really relaxing,” he says. The original home, 106 years old, had a dilapidated interior. Brian gutted it and blew out the back to create a bigger living room and master bedroom, bringing the new home to approximately 2,050 square feet total. He went with a palette of green and blue “because they’re the most requested colors coast-to-coast,” he says. Each room boasts a blend of patterns, textures, and shapes, and combines traditional and more modern pieces. “Sure, there are touches of bold color inside and out, but it’s all balanced,” he says. “You get a little pep in your dayto-day routine, and a house that always looks fresh.” Just call it an oh!-asis.

living room It’s a design trifecta—airy (the French doors!), striking (that fireplace!), and cheerful (those colors!)— with a little secret. “The fireplace looks like old whitewashed brick, but it’s brick veneer,” says Brian. The emerald velvet Kardiel sofas were not meant to match the rug’s greens. As Brian says, “A slightly ‘of’ color makes all the diference between too perfect and perfectly lived in.” The circular tops and curved-rod bases of the Platner-style cofee tables from overstock.com ofset the square-arm sofas. The walls are painted Halcyon Green by Sherwin-Williams. FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 110.

master bedroom A vaulted ceiling, windows galore: It was basically built to be a haven. “With all the natural light, I could have fun with color without overwhelming the space,” says Brian. The blues in the quilt (by Truly Soft), pillows, and Roman shades (made with Duralee fabric) echo the teal walls (Great Falls by SherwinWilliams). Stylish yet simple furniture is the ideal match—there’s a white platform bed and sleek dressers topped with bubble glass lamps by Dimond Lighting.

good question

how bad is it?

Straight answers to scratch-your-head questions.

WASHER: GETTY/ISTOCKPHOTO; TEDDY BEAR: GETTY IMAGES

how bad is it to never wash your kid’s favorite stuffed animal? Give poor Pookie an occasional wash—it can help keep your child healthy during flu season. That’s key when a play pet accompanies your tot to day care, or if there are siblings in the house who handle it too. Plush toys are porous, so they create a cozy environment that can harbor cold, flu, and strep nasties, says microbiologist Jason Tetro, author of The Germ Code. Toss in your child’s furry friend when you launder your bed linens, enclosing it in a pillowcase or a lingerie bag so the fur won’t get snagged. If the tag says “surface-clean only,” do a rubdown with a disinfectant wipe. Also smart: Whenever kids come over for playdates, put Pookie in a closet “for naptime,” to avoid contamination from germy little fingers.

Please let me in—I need a bath!

PRETTY BAD!

good question

how bad is it to not serve appetizers on Thanksgiving? You don’t want hangry guests on your hands, so ofer premeal bites—just don’t go nuts. “There is so much abundance at the Thanksgiving table that having loads of hors d’oeuvres seems not only unnecessary but also counterproductive,” says Food Network star Ted Allen. His go-tos: a board with a selection of cheeses and water crackers, along with a couple crudité platters plus a Green Goddess dip (choose a recipe based on buttermilk, not sour cream, since it’s less filling). As for drinks, “prepare a simple cocktail, like lemonade and vodka, and serve it in pitchers,” he suggests. “That way you can keep an eye on the oven!”

how bad is it to drive with a cracked windshield? Deal with that pronto to avoid a safety issue and a cash drain. “Cracks or chips in the driver’s line of sight can obstruct the view or be distracting, potentially leading to a crash,” says Michael Calkins, technical services manager at AAA. This is why most states have laws that require replacing a windshield with any damage at eye level. Large breaks could also weaken the windshield’s structure—critical for supporting the roof in case of a rollover. You’ll want to fix a small crack ASAP as well, as it might spread, requiring a full replacement (a glass auto repair shop can fill it with resin). If you need a new windshield, check to see whether your insurance ofers coverage, and if there’s a deductible. Otherwise expect to spend at least a couple hundred dollars.

KINDA BAD!

good question

how bad is it to let your dog sleep with his collar on? It’s dangerous for any dog who sleeps in a crate, as the collar or ID tag could accidentally hook onto a metal slat and cause strangulation. “A collar isn’t designed to be a 24/7 accessory,” says Bryce Kibbel, D.V.M., clinical assistant professor at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Another good reason to remove it at night is that nonstop wearing could cause fur to break of, leading to irritation or an infection. The risk jumps if the collar frequently gets wet, or if it’s a bit too tight. “You should be able to slip a finger or two beneath a collar,” says Dr. Kibbel. If your house has spots where a collar can catch during a pup’s nap, like air vents on the floor or slats in a deck, go for one with a flat ID plate instead of tags.

REALLY BAD!

You’re of the hook…within limits. “Life happens! It’s OK to take a few extra days to finish up a book,” says Frank Collerius, cohost of the popular podcast “The Librarian Is In.” Just don’t be that borrower who’s always hoarding best-sellers. “As librarians, we love to see someone so into a book they can’t let it go,” says Collerius, “but a library is inherently based on community, and with a hot book there will be others waiting their turn.” Call or stop by to ask about the status of the book; if nobody’s on the wait list, you could return it and check it right out again. If getting reads back on time is a regular challenge, however, consider library e-books—you’ll still have a due date, but at least you can cram in some reading while you wait in the grocery line.

utting the outdated Nashville, TN, house Laura Thurman bought with her husband, Josh, didn’t intimidate her at all. The real challenge was infusing the new interior with personality. “We wanted to make sure our home didn’t feel too new and cold,” Laura says. She got to work amping up the charm in the 2,300-square-foot space with moves big and small, from a wood-clad beam that spans the living areas (spoiler: it’s actually a structural fix) to mini hexagon tiles in the guest bathroom. She quirked it up with furniture and accessories that have a global vibe, like the Moroccan pendants and patterned tile in the kitchen. She also mixed vintage finds with new buys (the dining room table is one of her faves). The resulting character-filled blend is one you’d never expect to see judging by its traditional exterior. “We’re in a totally suburban area,” says Laura, “but when people come in, I hope they feel transported by the modern Bohemian energy. We do!”

3 A support beam replaced the wall between the kitchen and the living room. The couple made it look design-y by covering it with leftover light French oak flooring.

5 Carved details always seem special. This cabinet is from HomeGoods.

The Thurmans spruced up their house, built in 1991, by simply painting the shutters and door black.

The couple’s beagle, Mr. Bingley, loves to hang out in this spot.

8 “We chose brick-like white ceramic tile to give the space an older feel—but cool older,” says Laura. They vetoed upper cabinets, which would have covered it.

9 Laura painted the cabinets black (Caviar by SherwinWilliams) and put in butcher-block counters in a dark walnut shade for a touch of history.

11 Laura created an even more intriguing tray ceiling by painting the inset black (the same color as the kitchen cabinets) and installing a white medallion for contrast.

ikki and Matt Stinson knew it was time to move out of their Dallas, TX, house when the only spot they could find for their fourth kid’s crib was the walk-in closet in their master bedroom. “Packing sure isn’t fun, but we clearly needed more space,” says Nikki. They lucked out and found a lot eight blocks away, then enlisted builder Robert Elliott to construct their dream home: a mid-century-style one that would fit their family, with room to spare. Nikki chose an eclectic mix of furniture and fixtures—mid-century (a favorite of hers and Matt’s), vintage, modern—with an eye toward glam-ness and childproof-ness. “I have a background in graphic design, and I love great style,” says Nikki. “There was no reason to lose out on that just because we have four kids.” One glance at their house and it’s clear they didn’t: The place is fab yet friendly, full of color and cozy spots for watching TV, doing homework, reading, and everything in between. “Our home definitely has a fancy look,” says Nikki. “Friends who come over with kids are like, ‘Don’t touch that!’ and I say, ‘It’s fine!’ Every square inch of this house was put together with kids in mind—and adults, too.”

The giant slatted wood panel slides open to reveal a mini oice (Nikki’s a stationery designer), so she can keep an eye on kids at play as she works. The wood credenza behind the sofa is also from Ligne Roset; the funky blue-and-green lamps on top are 1940s vintage finds.

stella’s bedroom The couple’s oldest daughter wanted an explosion of color. Yet psychedelic curtains (made with fabric by Kristi Kohut), a turquoise couch from Room & Board, and a rainbow-color rug from Lulu & Georgia were still not enough: “She wanted turquoise walls, too!” says Nikki. But Mom guided her to light blue (Lullaby by Sherwin-Williams), promising it would make the rest of the colors pop. You’d never guess what Stella’s favorite thing turned out to be: the clear acrylic toy chest from wisteria.com, which holds her collection of stufed animals.

TILE SO NICE they used it twice

Spot it on the floor, then again as the backsplash: A fab Los Angeles kitchen dares to double up.

D

ave Laden didn’t have much on his kitchen wish list. “All I wanted was a cool, laid-back place where I could hang out.” The one in the 1941 Los Angeles bungalow he bought was cramped and dated, so he roped in designer Daleet Spector to deliver a redo. After opening up the living space, she had an additional goal: making the kitchen stand out from the adjacent rooms. In came graphic cement floor tiles (Square Target by Clé) in soft blues and grays that bring punch but put out a Cali-chill vibe. And then, in a neverbefore-tried move by Daleet, in came that tile again—this time for the backsplash. Bingo! They kept the rest of the area pretty low-key, with white finishes, open shelving, and simple lighting. “The tile may have a striking pattern, but the colors are surprisingly calming,” says Dave. “I used to relax in my living room—now the kitchen is my place to decompress.”

PHOTOGRAPHS BY LISA ROMEREIN STYLED BY SUNDAY HENDRICKSON

in the kitchen open shelves A smart way to keep all eyes on a knockout backsplash: floating shelves in a light wood, like these 2-inchthick bleached maple ones. They’re stacked with Dave’s everyday glasses and dishware for quick access.

lighting Since the star of the kitchen is what’s underfoot and on the wall, Daleet went ultraairy with what’s above: three clear glass globe pendants from Schoolhouse Electric. “When you’re sitting at the island and you look up, they’re a great detail,” says Dave. “Otherwise they just sort of blend in, and that’s a good thing.”

island and seating The goal here: an island that was not the same-old, same-old. Designer Daleet painted three sides and the wine rack white (All White by Farrow & Ball). When she suggested accenting the fourth side with raw fir, Dave was skeptical: “I worried it would look unfinished and cheap,” he says. But paired with a Caesarstone quartz countertop and hairpin-leg teak barstools from Crate & Barrel, the wood looks downright sophisticated.

Says Dave, “Guests—kids and adults!—love doodling and playing hangman or tic-tac-toe.” A custom table with an oak top plays of the kitchen’s wood shelves. The molded plastic Eames chairs are from Design Within Reach, and the Moroccan-style rug is from World Market.

I love that the chalkboard paint covers three walls. It’s not just a spot for grocery lists—it’s a giant piece of art! —Dave

The pattern on this Honeycomb Shade is subtle, especially in light grey—but it coordinates perfectly with the Fabric Shades in the nearby dining room. The shades on these hard-toreach windows have affordable MotiviaŽ Motorization and open or close with a remote.

“What’s the secret? Choose just a few colors, patterns, and textures and carry them throughout your home. That’s what we did to get these beautifully coordinated looks featuring the Scott Living Collection for Smith & Noble.

FLAT ROMAN FABRIC SHADES

“No matter which products you choose, Smith & Noble’s Scott Living Collection is designed to work together. Don’t be afraid to mix it up!â€? The Natural Woven Shade over the tub softly ďŹ lters light through the sheer grey materials. Woven on hand-fed looms, the material adds a warming touch of nature to the hard surfaces in a bath. The grey picks up the color in the kitchen and dining room.

“ Rarely wil we check a bag. Anyone in our group who does is shu ed. —DREW

Important question: Window or aisle? DREW: Window. JONATHAN: Me too. People find it weird that we never sit together, but we both want window seats. Any strategies for getting through security fast? JONATHAN: We’re members of programs like Global Entry and Clear—we’re on the road close to 11 months of the year! Other than that, Drew bats his eyelashes, but it usually doesn’t help. How about plane rituals? JONATHAN: Wipe down the armrests and tray table—and never shake hands with

someone coming out of the bathroom! DREW: Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Best celeb travel run-in? DREW: I was in my seat and heard the unmistakable voice of Samuel L. Jackson. All I wanted to do was ask if I could borrow a snake… but I refrained. We talked sports. What’s your dream vacation? JONATHAN: I’d love to soak up the culture in Asia. Japan has always intrigued me. Got any jet lag cures? DREW: Hit the gym to get tired, then hit the pillow hard. JONATHAN: I can sleep anytime, anywhere. It’s a talent.

“I’m a shower person. Are contractors even alowed to take baths?” —JONATHAN

“Believe it: My wife, Linda, and I have mask party nights. I just use whichever one she gives me.” —DREW

Which one of you takes longer to get ready? DREW: Jonathan will gladly tell you it’s me, but the thing is, I have my hair at a length where I can get up, shower, and go. He has to blow-dry his, which takes more time. JONATHAN: The joke is that I do my construction work without a strand ever moving. I figure as long as my hair looks great, people won’t stare at my wrinkles. What are your grooming secrets? JONATHAN: My hair is pretty gray— well, salt-and-pepper, but heavier on

the salt—so I color it. DREW: Here’s a little-known fact: If you really want to get under Jonathan’s skin, brush your teeth around him. It’s like nails on a chalkboard! Do you have a signature scent? JONATHAN: Nada! We’re both hypersensitive to smells. How did you get those smiles—did you have braces? DREW: When we were teenagers, with gapped teeth, we went to the dentist for bonding. I volunteered to go first because Jonathan was hesitant. Then he got jealous and did it too.

How do you like to shop? DREW: I shop almost exclusively online. Jonathan shops my closet. What’s your of-duty uniform? JONATHAN: When I’m not working I’m usually in jeans, a graphic tee, and a hoodie. DREW: Stylish activewear, like a thin hoodie and a pair of joggers. I was seriously excited when athleisure became a thing. Is there a kind of clothing or accessory you hoard? JONATHAN: Graphic tees. DREW: Watches and shoes. JONATHAN: No kidding—we once counted and he
