Hurrah! There’s a nip in the air, so I’ve launched myself into full-on snuggling mode. Don’t get me wrong – I love the summer and mellow autumn days, too, but it’s just that on the sofa with a hot choc-slash-G&T, hunkering under a cosy throw, is my favourite place to be! Of course, it’s a sweet excuse to load up on wintery accessories, because a home can never have enough cute tealights or faux-fur cushions. Or anything with pom-poms on, basically. ABOUT ME I’m Beck Hanson, 39, and I live with my partner Marc, 40. MY HOME A three-bedroom semi-detached in West Yorkshire, which we bought in 2006. WHEN I BOUGHT IT Although the previous owners had done some work, the interior was basic and felt unloved. The rooms were liveable, but we wanted to make lots of cosmetic changes over time. AND NOW The house has a distinctive eclectic style and is filled with a mixture of retro designs and Scandi-style pieces. Marc and I love colour so we’ve used plenty of it to give each room character. Using creative flair and an eye for detail, Beck gave her home a cosmetic overhaul with plenty of colour and character
T
his property was originally built in 1836 as a school for underprivileged children, with one side for girls and the other for boys – in more recent years, it was split into two houses,’ says Beck. ‘My partner Marc and I had been looking in the area as we were keen to stay within easy access of both Manchester and Leeds.’ We nearly didn’t come to see this house as it’s on a main road, but once here, we were drawn to the spectacular views from the back, and it had plenty of storage which was high on our priority list. Our offer was accepted after a second viewing but unfortunately it fell through on the day we were due to exchange contracts, as our buyers pulled out. We were devastated and thought we had lost the house. However, some time later, we found a new buyer – and luckily, our dream home was still on the market.
Size matters One of the main reasons we fell in love with the house was the amount of space it offered and the layout over three floors. The ground floor consists of a large openplan kitchen-diner/reception room – great for entertaining and socialising. Although we haven’t changed the Ikea kitchen since moving in 12 years ago, the layout works well for us and the breakfast bar helps it feel separate from the dining area. We tend to spend our evenings in the lower ground floor sitting room – it’s got a cosier feel due to the lower ceilings and the wood-burning stove. The three bedrooms upstairs provide us with lots of storage and Marc uses one for work.
Making choices All the rooms were liveable when we first moved in, which took the pressure off having to do any work straight

It’s a small room, so there wasn’t much we could do in terms of its layout and we ended up sourcing all the new pieces individually through eBay to save money. We’d like to renovate it properly in the future so for now I use accessories to give it some character. Colour plays a vital role in my interior style, as I grew up in a home full of vibrant shades. I start by painting the walls of a room in a neutral hue, and then introduce colour through textiles, wall art and accessories. I tend to go for bold prints in mid-century and Scandi designs, as well as posters from our favourite festivals. The way I’ve decorated each room is relevant to the way we use the different spaces and the atmosphere we wanted

to create. For example, the sitting room is our cosy hideaway so I’ve used more subdued lighting and textiles to soften the space and make it feel homely. The La Redoute rug is a real statement piece and also compensates for the cold Yorkshire stone flag flooring. The main bedroom is light and airy as we wanted the space to feel serene and calm. The walls are painted grey and the room has a Scandi-inspired feel, using pops of colour to tie it in with the rest of the house.
Getting creative I tend to tire of things quite easily, so I have found that upcycling furniture is a perfect way to keep the look fresh without denting my bank balance too often! I generally use chalk paint as it’s

Let dry. Give a tin of furniture chalk emulsion a good stir and then paint the chair, following the wood grain where possible. Leave to dry. Apply a second coat of chalk emulsion and leave to dry. This should be enough, but apply a third coat if necessary.

Do it! BREAKFAST BAR TRICKS Add a compact ledge at the end of a run of worktop (or along the edge of a peninsula). Make it semi-circular if space is really tight – this will give you enough space for a couple of bar stools. Fit a wall-hung table – you could even use a drop-leaf one so that you can fold it up when it’s not in use. Pair it with a folding stool. Steal ideas from small spaces like boats or caravans and add a section of worktop that slides or folds out when extra surface is needed.

I like to cast the net wide when shopping for homewares, as I don’t want each room to look like a showroom. I’m a big fan of Ikea, Habitat, John Lewis and Made.com, as well as HomeSense and H&M Home for finding some real bargains. Ebay is a gold mine of pre-loved pieces and I’ve discovered lots of independent makers through Etsy and curated online shops. I’m very lucky to

Decorating the house has been a great experience for Marc and I and, although we still have work to do, we have totally transformed the interior to make it our own. FALLING APART’ Excited by the potential of her new home, Jenny hadn’t counted on the amount of work it would need…
W
hen our house search began in early 2014, my husband Darren and I knew we wanted a spacious family home in need of a little work that we could make our own,’ says Jenny. ‘We spotted this property on Rightmove, and it appeared to tick all of our boxes. Despite being cluttered and painted in a cocktail of garish colours, it had the potential to become the home we had in mind. However, we soon realised that the work required was more than cosmetic.
Starting from scratch
MODERN MAKEOVER ‘The kitchen was luminous yellow with layers of sticky lino tiles and dark units. We gave it a contemporary cream and grey scheme’
We received the keys in February 2014 but the house was far from ready, so Darren and I moved in with my parents while the renovation took place. We gutted almost the entire property. We ripped out the kitchen, the bathroom and the carpets, taking it more or less back to its foundations so we could first focus on fixing structural damage. The house comprises two parts, the original Thirties building and an extension which was added about 10 years ago. The newer rooms, including the sitting room/ playroom, just needed a decor refresh, but the older part of the house was an entirely different story. It had damp, so our first big task was stripping walls of paper and plaster to apply a treatment. But that was nothing compared with what we found in the kitchen, behind the units. Only after removing the cabinets did we realise to our horror that there was no insulation, and that you could almost see straight through the wall to the outside! And the disappointment didn’t end there, as the gorgeous wooden floorboards we hoped we’d be able to restore and keep in place were, in fact, rotting, and had to be removed. It quickly dawned on us that most things in

We had the walls plastered, concrete poured where our wooden floors would’ve been, and an electrician friend popped over every Saturday morning for weeks to fix the wiring. Only when the property was structurally sound could we begin giving the interior a facelift. We found our ideal kitchen units – which we decided to buy in two shades for a contrasting look – in Ikea, and replaced the bright yellow walls with a more subtle grey shade and decorative tiles. We chose Farrow & Ball paint for both the family room and the sitting room/playroom, and hung statement wallpapers – a complete

Thankfully, the upstairs required a lot less work than downstairs, though we did decide to knock two smaller bedrooms into one and we extended and converted a cloakroom into an en suite. But even though the work went to plan, it wasn’t without a few minor dramas. One day, Darren and I were decorating the main bedroom when the handle came off the door, locking us in the room. We were alone in the house – and Darren suffers from claustrophobia. In the end, we had to phone the police to ask if a nearby officer could break in and let us out!
Feeling thrifty The renovation taught us a big lesson in budgeting. Working as a fashion

merchandiser means it’s my job to source items at the best price possible so I’m a pretty savvy shopper, but I had to be patient to get the pieces I really wanted for the house. I purchased many items, such as our American fridge-freezer and the glass drinks trolley in our family room, second-hand from eBay, and used both mine and Darren’s staff discounts (I work for Next, and Darren for Ikea). We restored what we could, including the original wooden doors, to save cash, and constantly browsed the bargain corner at Ikea, where we’ve found many a gem. I also like to find indie brands on Instagram, where I share photos of my own home and its transformation at @mrsjennyswift. Nifty decorating techniques, such as papering a single wall or alcoves, and using stickers to

From house to home I’m beyond proud of all we’ve achieved in what was a really run-down property. We were both working full-time throughout the renovation, which meant a lot of late nights on site, driving between houses and living without a lot of our belongings. We also got married the same year, which made life very hectic, but unforgettable. I’d say the kitchen has been our biggest achievement. It’s undergone a huge transformation, and has become my favourite room in the house. I’ve always wanted to have a kitchen big enough to accommodate a dining table for family meals, and finally I have one. Next on our to-do list is to build a porch, as our hall is minuscule, and then tackle the driveway. We’re not 100% finished yet, but we’ve come a really long way, and completing those last little tasks will be the icing on the cake.’

AND NOW The house has been replanned and is light, spacious and modern. It now has three storeys, with a main bedroom and en-suite in the loft, and a kitchendiner on the ground floor, plus a new snug, study, hall and utility. IN THE EIGHTIES!’ Anne and Jeremy would need vision, skills and talent to turn a bland property into a stylish, Scandiinfluenced home
W
hen my husband Jeremy and I moved here from London in 1999, we bought a 400-year-old cottage,’ says Anne. ‘It was quirky and jam-packed with period features, including beams, an inglenook fireplace and wonky floorboards. Jeremy runs a company called Collars which makes hand-crafted wooden oars, masts and spars for boats, and he’s great at woodwork and all sorts of DIY jobs. I’ve got a background in fashion and textiles and just love interiors, so we both relished putting our stamp on the cottage. Although it was initially ideal, after our four children came along, it became increasingly tight for space and there was no way of extending.
On the hunt We started house-hunting in earnest in 2013. As weeks rolled into months, nothing we viewed appealed at all. Running out of options, we decided to view this Eighties house – just a fiveminute walk away from our cottage. We were really impressed by its location. It was a corner plot with a gated driveway and ample parking. It felt secluded and peaceful. Inside, the surprises continued. Jeremy and I were bowled over by the vast potential this dated house offered. Walking from room to room, we could easily see how, with time and effort, we could radically reconfigure the layout.

Downstairs, the galley kitchen was crying out to be knocked through to create an open-plan kitchen-diner, while converting the garage into an adjoining snug seemed straightforward. The hall was spacious and there was a downstairs loo, plus another room. On the first floor, there

were four good-sized bedrooms, a family bathroom that the boys could use, and an en-suite that both girls could share. We discovered the attic had plenty of headroom and, with a bit of creative thinking on the positioning of a new staircase, Jeremy reckoned we could transform the loft into a bright and airy master bedroom, complete with an en-suite and dressing area. Despite the dated decor, it was the only house that we’d seen that had such scope for our family’s needs. It also had a lovely feel. We moved in towards the end of 2014.
Working with wood Realising that knocking through the kitchen, fitting new units and installing a huge wooden beam made by Jeremy, would all be very disruptive, we celebrated Christmas in our new home and started the first phase of our renovation project in January 2015. Rather than having no kitchen at all,

Do it! GALLEY KITCHEN TIPS Introduce the classic working triangle. Arrange the key task zones of fridge, cooker and sink at three separate points so that it’s easy to flit from one to the other. Go for cupboards in a pale palette and introduce reflective surfaces to bounce light and make the room feel more spacious. For a light feel, choose an all-white scheme. A pretty voile blind will soften the look, and add pops of colour with accessories that can be easily changed. Handle-free doors are great in a narrow space as you’re less likely to bang into them when moving around the room. A symmetrical design will feel more balanced – think about creating visual balance, for example having taller units like the fridge and wall cupboards facing each other.

we installed the new units in two stages. It looked slightly odd for a while since we had a run of old units down one side and the sleek new ones down the other. With Jeremy having such a passion for wood, we decided to go for oak floorboards throughout most of the downstairs rooms and oak worktops, linking through to our handy island/breakfast bar.

A joint effort Throughout our project, Jeremy has been absolutely fantastic. If a task sprung up that he wasn’t familiar with, he’d have a look on YouTube and work out how to tackle it. To save space in the kitchen, we turned a lean-to shed outside into a utility room. Having carefully considered how to shave a few metres off Grace’s bedroom to make room for our new staircase (and with planning permission granted), we hired a loft conversion firm to do the main structural work. Jeremy then tackled the insulating, plastering and painting himself. We then converted the garage into a family-friendly snug. We wanted to make this space feel like a proper room,

rather than just an 'obvious' garage conversion. After removing the plasterboard ceiling and uncovering the vaulted area, Jeremy painstakingly made the wooden beams for the snug. They are a wonderful feature that draw the eye upwards and add character to this cosy space.
Creating Scandi style I’ve adored choosing colours, furniture and soft furnishings, and pulling all the spaces together. I didn’t have a masterplan but I knew that I wanted our house to be a very welcoming Scandiinfluenced family home. It has a neutral backdrop with darker tones for added impact. I tend to favour grey shades and love injecting accents such as copper or rose gold, and plenty of personal touches.

Tame living room clutter with a wall of storage. Invest in a modular shelving unit so you can tailor each of the cubbies to your needs. Revamp a cabinet by replacing handles with leather tabs. Cut an old belt into 10cm lengths, fold in half and drill a hole through to make tabs. Use brass washers and screws to attach to furniture.

ABOUT ME I’m Andrew Griffiths, an associate director for a PR agency, and I live in a one-bedroom first-floor flat within a Victorian conversion in Crouch End, north London. MY CHALLENGE To make the most of the room’s beautiful period windows and turn a dark, dated area into a lighter, brighter space to spend time in. MY WISH LIST I love contemporary interiors and wanted to add energy and impact using a colour palette that was both dramatic and masculine.

INJECT DRAMA’ Andrew combined modern style with a bold, vibrant colour palette to add impact to his living room
I
had previously always rented, so this property was my first real home of my own,’ says Andrew. ‘I was excited at the opportunity to create my own interior and showcase all the furniture that I’d collected over the years.’ When I first viewed the flat, it didn’t seem like there was much work needed, but once I’d moved in I decided to give it a top-to-toe refurbishment. The living room was the first area to be tackled as I have a demanding job and needed a space to relax and unwind at the end of a working day.
Getting started The worst aspect was the floor, which had been stained in a dark orange-brown colour with a very high shine. The thick varnish hid all the natural grain and sapped the character out of the floor. I decided to strip the timber boards and have them waxed in a very light grey finish, which immediately made the room look much larger. The feature windows, which I loved, originally had polyester red curtains that hung limply either side, so I went for bespoke shutters which give some privacy, but don’t block out the natural light.
Colour choice
MODERN VIBE ‘Painting two walls in an inky-blue tone creates depth and draws attention to the newly built alcoves and fireplace. The soft-grey paint on the wall highlights the windows’
I took my time choosing the paint finish for the walls. The previous owner had painted the chimney breast sky blue and used a muddy magnolia for the remaining walls, which made the room look lifeless. I wanted to create energy and impact using a colour palette that was both dramatic and masculine. I also have a large book collection and I picked a colour that would act as a dark backdrop and make the book spines stand out. I think having just one feature wall is a bit old fashioned, so I decided to paint two walls in Stiffkey Blue and the other

two in soft grey Ammonite. Both are from Farrow & Ball, and I think the grey perfectly complements the darker blue tone. I had bespoke shelving built into the alcoves and also finished them in Stiffkey Blue so they’d blend into the background.

New layout A corner recess which had previously been ignored became the perfect position for a leather armchair that I’d bought years ago. It’s right next to one of the windows, making it a bright spot in the morning to sit and read a newspaper and have a coffee. Adding a vintage lamp with an ethnic-inspired lampshade, as well as a selection of rich, textured fabrics, brings the eclectic element I wanted to add to the sitting room.
The right lighting With its high Victorian ceilings, the room seemed to be calling out for a statement light fitting, but I didn’t want to go traditional. I chose a structured, industrialstyle light that had the big architectural impact of a designer piece, but at a high-street price. You can move the arms around and tilt it for mood lighting. The whole project took about a month to complete and was a labour of love, as I did most of it myself. I’ve been studying to be an interior designer (find me on Insta @andrewjonathandesign) and refurbishing my new home was my first chance to put all my ideas into action. Attention to detail is something I’m passionate about and I’m proud of the way the new sitting room looks. When it’s sunny, the light floods through the beautiful windows and although it’s close to central London, you feel like you’re in a calm, tranquil space.’

Do it! MAKE DARK WALLS WORK Pick the right paint finish. Gloss might add the glam factor, but it shows up every imperfection on the wall’s surface – matt is kinder. Work with the right accent shades. Warm yellow is a great pairing for dark blue. Neutral surfaces, such as a crisp white ceiling and pale-wood floor, also act as a foil for strong colour. Paint architectural features such as built-in shelves and fireplaces in the same dramatic shade for maximum impact in a room. Don’t dismiss dark shades as an option if your room is on the small side. Dark walls add drama and height that works just as well in smaller spaces. Dark walls can also help striking art prints really pop, so are a great option as a feature wall behind an collection of artwork.

ABOUT ME I’m Emily Waddecar, 26. I’m a UX designer and I live with my cocker spaniel in a three-bedroom, Twenties semi in Lancashire, bought in March 2017. It’s my first house and needed top-to-bottom renovating! MY CHALLENGE The house was almost derelict and full of spiders! There was a dining room and a tiny, dark kitchen, with mouldy walls, collapsing cupboards and a leak from the bathroom above. MY WISHLIST A practical, openplan space with lots of light and somewhere to entertain friends. It had to be stylish and symmetrical, with a bit of an industrial feel.

s a first-time buyer, I was looking for an affordable doer-upper. This house was in a really awful state, but having lots of my family, including my mum and dad, in the building trade put me in a great position. I had masses of expertise on hand to sort it out, and everyone rallied round to help me achieve my vision on a budget.
Making a start The house had been empty for months and was a complete mess inside, but the high ceilings, big rooms and amazing light flooding in at the back all really appealed. At first I thought I’d keep the dining room and kitchen separate, but the kitchen was small and too dark, so knocking down the dividing wall was an obvious move. The kitchen worked best in the corner, leaving space for a table, and I knew I wanted a breakfast bar with stools, because I love having friends over for a glass of wine or a coffee and a chat.

I like modern and vintage looks, and I prefer angles and straight lines to curves. Top of my wishlist were the metro wall tiles. They’re not too expensive and it’s easy to create interesting effects. They also fit in with the clean, functional vibe I wanted. Brick was another must-have material for that industrial edge, and I was thrilled that we could re-use the bricks from the dining-room wall to build the breakfast bar. I fancied patchwork-style floor tiles and I set my heart on solid oak worktops and chunky, open wooden shelves for easy storage. I’d decided on plain white units, and I had to watch costs to afford those luxury wooden worktops! Mum and Dad recommended B&Q kitchen furniture, which they’ve fitted before, and I picked up well-priced cupboards that were perfect. I found my appliances and flooring there too. Sourcing so much from one store

As soon as the dividing wall came down I knew I’d done the right thing. The space felt huge, and installing patio doors brought in even more natural light. The old floor came up, a new boiler was installed and the room was stripped back to the brickwork. Three walls were re-plastered and I spent days scraping every tiny bit of mortar and plaster off the remaining wall and cleaning all the bricks we’d saved to build the breakfast bar. I painted two walls mid-grey, and my mum helped me wallpaper one, to add colour to the room. We bought timber and
brackets to make the open shelves, which I’ve stained for an aged look, and my pendant lights were a fantastic car-boot sale find. My parents, brother and cousin did all the building work, plumbing and electrics, following my hand-drawn plans – they were amazing! I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together and I can’t thank my parents enough. This might not be my forever home, but right now I absolutely love it.’

Gently chip away plaster with a masonry hammer and chisel over the area you want to expose. You need to scrape away any loose plaster that’s left with a wire brush, so that the bricks and mortar are completely clear. Give the bricks a good clean. Start at the top of the area, and clean off any dust and residue with warm water and a sponge. Seal the brick, using a specialist brick sealant so that the surface remains in good condition.

Consider stripping back to bare brickwork to add rustic charm and instant character

Which wall should I expose? Stick to one wall or a section with natural start and finish points, such as a chimney breast or alcoves. A wall without doors, windows or radiators will be easiest. Any electric cables will also be exposed – galvanised trunking works well with brick’s industrial vibe.

Can I do the work myself? Absolutely. Drill a test hole in the plaster to check the brickwork is worth stripping. If it’s damaged or the colour isn’t your bag, refill the hole. If not, prepare for serious dirt and dust. Cover every surface and seal doors. Work methodically across the wall from left to right, hammering then gently lifting off plasterwork with a trowel or putty knife.

How can I tidy them up? Remove loose cement or brickwork with a stiff brush (not wire), then vacuum the wall. ‘If that leaves exposed cavities it’s best to re-point any gaps, to avoid draughts or creepy-crawlies,’ says DIY interiors vlogger Georgina Burnett, of TheHomeGenie.com. ‘Stop new cement sticking out like a sore thumb by dabbing on watered-down chalk paint to dull it.’

Will they need to be sealed? Sealing will alter the colour and look of the brickwork, which can ruin the look. ‘Once done, it’s impossible to reverse,’ says period property expert Roger Hunt. Sealing can also trap moisture inside the brick, which could be problematic. In moisture-prone kitchens and bathrooms, PVA or terracotta sealant is sensible. On floors, Retrouvius recommends Lithofin’s MN Stain Stop to protect against spills.

What if I have no original brickwork? Consider brick slips, or veneer bricks, which mimic solid brick but are much thinner; try Eurobrick Systems or Matclad. Once pointed, they’re incredibly realistic. Another option is to hire a bricklayer to build a new wall with reclaimed bricks. In upstairs rooms, consult a structural surveyor regarding load-bearing.

ABOUT ME I’m Sophia Hardy, 35, and I live with my husband Tom, 35, and our children Harrison, five, and Wilf, two, in our four-bedroom terraced house in Lichfield. We moved here in October 2015. MY CHALLENGE The bathroom was extremely dated. The bath had been removed to make room for a double shower. There was damp and the window was rotten. The floor sloped, so nothing was level. MY WISH LIST To reinstall the bath! Not having a bath was a big deal – using the shower to bathe two small boys was a struggle. We needed both a bath and a separate shower in a modern, family-friendly design.

was A NEW BATH’ Ditching her dated, damp bathroom, Sophia has created a flexible, familyfriendly space
W
e always wanted a house that would be a project, so we could get the exact look we were after, and we’re not afraid of hard work,’ says Sophia. ‘So it was a dream come true when my husband Tom and I finally got the keys to our home in October 2015. However, it needed a lot more work than we originally imagined. The house hadn’t been decorated since the Eighties. The electrics and pipework were almost retro and the walls were in really bad condition. The bathroom was a top priority as I was desperate for a proper bath and a space I could relax in.
Making plans I love all the planning when we are decorating a room and I always start the renovation process with a lot of research on Pinterest, Instagram and of course looking at magazines like Style at Home. I’d seen a bathroom renovation on YouTube with floor tiles that looked wooden. I fell in love with them and knew they would be the basis of the room. From there I planned to have dark wood with grey walls and a pop of colour. I originally wanted brushed brass hardware but the budget wouldn’t allow it – and looking at the finished room I’m glad I went for chrome in the end. With a lot of planning we managed to work out a layout where we could have everything we wanted, including the new suite and shower cubicle.

Usually Tom does the majority of our renovations, but as this is our only bathroom we needed it to be renovated as quickly as possible with minimal disruption. with renovating the bathroom. He did everything from changing pipework to tiling with our gorgeous new floor tiles. We hit one problem – as the house is over 150 years old the walls and flooring were all off and needed a lot of correcting, which took an extra day and slightly extended our two-week plan. However, it was so nice to have someone else do all the hard work. Tom did a few small jobs – he put two frosted glass panels in the bathroom door to allow light into the hallway and, using an old pine door, made new airing cupboard doors.
Styling the room We needed a big wall cabinet to store our toiletries. I found one in dark wood that worked perfectly with the scheme. I love plants so Tom created a bracket with a hook to hang a plant, which looks really effective. We added a large round mirror from Ikea to create space and a shelf from La Redoute to provide additional storage for accessories. Finishing touches can really transform a space, and I wanted to add a little pop of colour, so we introduced the mustard towels and bath mat. I think my favourite item has to be the bath. We went two years without one, so it’s a real luxury to have a hot bath with a nice glass of wine. The boys love bathing together and playing in the water and after two weeks of borrowing the neighbours’ bathrooms during the renovation I really appreciate how much I love the room and will never take it for granted.’

The real thing Parquet used to be made from solid wood, but now there are engineered designs too. Engineered parquet floors are made from layers of processed wood with hardwood on top, whereas solid-wood designs are made from solid pieces of timber, which offer greater durability. Choose from harder woods such as oak, maple or walnut, while softwood parquet is made from materials like solid pine.

Fall for fake Another option is to go for a laminate floor with a parquet effect. Laminate is a multi-layer synthetic flooring, which is fused together with a lamination process. The top two layers are made up of a photographic appliqué layer, topped with a clear protective layer. The benefits are that it’s more durable and resistant to dents and scratches and it’s also easier to install. Alternatively, there are lots of ceramic tiles available that look just like the real thing despite the fact they are porcelain. Go with this option and you’ll have a flooring with a good durable finish – plus, many designs are suitable for outdoor use, too, so you can take your look from indoors onto a patio.

Make feeding birds fun. Place cutters on a lined baking tray. Mix one part bird seed and two parts melted suet and fill cutters. Chill for five minutes. Make a hole in each with a skewer, and chill for a few hours. Thread with twine to hang in the garden.

MAKE A DELICIOUSLY MOIST APPLE AND ALMOND CAKE TAKES 1HR SERVES 10 2 Bramley apples 1tbsp lemon juice ½ cinnamon stick 150g unsalted butter, softened 175g golden caster sugar 2 eggs, beaten 250g plain flour 1tsp baking powder 1tsp ground cinnamon 50g ground almonds FOR THE TOPPING 3 Braeburn apples 2tbsp apricot jam

First, make the apple sauce. Peel, core and thinly slice the Bramley apples and place in a pan with the lemon juice and cinnamon. Cover and
cook gently until the apples are soft and have formed a thick sauce. Remove from the heat, discard the cinnamon and leave to cool. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/ Gas 4. Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until thick and pale. Gradually add the eggs, beating until thoroughly mixed. Sift over the flour, baking powder and cinnamon, add the almonds and fold together. Measure 250g of the cooled apple sauce and fold through. Spoon the mixture into a 20cm springform buttered and

base-lined cake tin. You can freeze any leftover apple sauce for later use. Quarter and core the Braeburn apples and slice each quarter into three. Arrange the apples in a circle on the batter. Bake for 35-40min, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If the top of the cake is browning too quickly, cover with foil for the last 10min of baking. HAVE A GOOD SHAKE Take rugs, runners and doormats outside to shake off any dirt and grit that’s been walked inside. Give them a good beating with a stiff brush, going over stubborn dried-on mud with the bristles and wiping away any damp patches on the undersides. Roll up and place to one side while you carry on.

GIVE SURFACES THE ONCE-OVER Arm yourself with two soft microfibre cloths. Spray one with antibacterial cleaner, wiping over door handles and smeary light switches, followed by stair finials and hand rails. Use the dry cloth to buff mirrors, picture glass, shelf and table surfaces. Then give wooden or tiled floors a once-over with a damp mop.

TACKLE THE FRONT DOOR Once you’ve wiped the inside of the door, move outside. Give the step and porch a thorough sweeping to remove surface dirt, then wipe the door clean with your cloth and spray, rinsing it out a couple of times if the door is particularly dirty. Use glass cleaner on glass panels and windows, buffing afterwards with a dry cloth. Finish off by polishing the letterbox, doorknob and door numbers with a dab of metal polish, buffing to a shine with a soft cloth or kitchen paper.

I
f the sealant around your bath is looking a bit worse for wear, it’s easier to sort out than you might think. You don’t need to shell out for a professional to do it – this is a DIY job that’s worth taking on yourself. Invest in some sealant remover, sealant and a cartridge gun, and do it yourself in an afternoon. WHAT YOU’LL NEED Silicone sealant remover Plastic scraper Silicone sealant Sealant gun White spirit

APPLY SEALANT REMOVER (try UniBond Silicone Sealant Remover, £7.98 for 150ml, B&Q) to the old sealant around the bath and leave it to dry for 10-15 min. Remove the sealant with a plastic scraper (be gentle so as not to damage the bath). Scrub the area using bathroom cleaner and leave it to dry thoroughly.

Perch yourself on the edge of the bath, press the trigger and apply the sealant to the gap in one smooth movement. Take care not to overfill.

All set for hibernation season? Make sure you tick getting your boiler prepped and ready off your list

re you prepared for the cold snap? This is the time to make sure your central heating system is in tip-top condition, so that your home can stay nice and cosy during the colder months.

If our central heating stops working, can we try to fix it ourselves without having to call an engineer out? Absolutely, but don’t try anything beyond these basic checks. First up, if you’re on a repayment meter, check your credit, turn on any gas appliances to check for a flame, and see if a fuse has tripped. Power cuts can reset timers, so you may need to reprogramme it; once you’ve done that, turn the thermostat up past 21˚C, which can force the boiler into action. Checking and topping up your boiler’s pressure is simple – search ‘British Gas: how to check water pressure’ on YouTube. Finally, press your boiler’s Reset button, because sometimes turning it off and on again really is the answer!

Our boiler cuts out when it’s freezing – is that a fault? Below-zero temperature weather can cause condensate pipes (found on modern condensing boilers) to freeze, which can stop the boiler from working. Frozen pipes are a common call-out for boiler engineers in the winter. Simply defrost the pipe by pouring some warm (but not boiling) water over it.

Cut the felt the same height as the bottle and wide enough to wrap round and overlap by 4cm. Stitch on two buttons using yarn, as pictured. Leave a length on one button to fasten. For the pocket, cut a 10x27cm piece of fabric. Press all four edges 5mm to the wrong side, then fold the strip in half, 15cm from one short end. Sew around three edges to create an open pocket. Put the pocket onto the front of the cover and sew down the two long side edges. Press the flap over and sew on two buttons, with a length of yarn for tying as before. Fill the pocket with dried camomile flowers. Cut a 12cm length of ribbon and sew the ends to the front of the cover in front of the dried-flower pocket.

Lightly sand the bucket and wipe off the dust with a cloth. Spray-paint in white. Leave to dry. Once dry, use a delicate-surface masking tape to mark a stripe around the lower half of the bucket. Spray dark blue and allow to dry. Carefully peel off the tape and reapply to create a narrower stripe below the first. Paint in light blue and leave to dry, as before. Remove the tape. Fill the bucket with kindling, matches, scented pinecones and firelighters.

Collect glass jars, remove any sticky labels and thoroughly clean and dry them. Select different-sized leaves and using a découpage glue or PVA, dab a small blob on the
outer edges of the leaf. Glue to the outside of the jar for a textural finish. Seal the leaves with a litle extra glue if required. Decorate the jar tops with lengths of ribbon fixed with glue, then tie a raffia bow in place around the rim. Pour a little water into the jar, then pop in a floating candle. Use candles with an autumnal scent like pine to add to the cosy atmosphere. Remember to never leave lighted candles unattended.

BLOODY MARY HOT DOGS TAKES 30MIN SERVES 4 3 onions, 12 cocktail sausages 1 chopped and 2 sliced 2tsp olive oil 200g passata 1tsp smoky spiced hot sauce Generous pinch of celery salt 2tbsp tomato ketchup 3tbsp vodka (optional) 200ml vegetable oil 5tbsp plain flour 6 hot dog rolls

Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Cook the sausages for 10-15min, turning occasionally, until they’re golden brown. Meanwhile, make the Bloody Mary sauce. Fry the chopped onion in the oil for 5min to soften. Add the passata, hot sauce, celery salt, tomato ketchup and vodka, if using. Simmer for 10min. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan. Meanwhile, coat the sliced onions in the flour. Gently put 1 onion ring in the hot oil – if it floats to the top, bubbles and cooks in 15sec, then the oil is at the right temperature. Cook the onion rings in batches until golden. Use kitchen paper to pat any excess oil from the onion rings and then set aside to keep warm. Slice the rolls, spread over a little of the Bloody Mary sauce and fill with the sausages and crispy onions. Use cocktail sticks to secure the hot dogs and serve with shot glasses full of the leftover sauce on the side, for dipping.

PUMPKIN & CHORIZO SOUP TAKES 1HR SERVES 4-6 225g diced chorizo 2 onions, finely chopped 1tbsp chipotle paste or smoked paprika 1kg pumpkin flesh 900ml chicken or vegetable stock

Heat 150g of the chorizo in a large pan until the oil starts to run out. Add the onions to the pan and cook for about 5min over a medium heat, until starting to soften. Stir in the chipotle paste (or smoked paprika), then add the pumpkin and stock to the pan. Bring to the boil, cover with a lid and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 30-40min, or until the pumpkin is tender. Remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to purée the soup, or transfer to a liquidiser or blender and blitz until smooth. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat the remaining chorizo in a pan until the oil starts to run out. Pour the soup into mugs or bowls, scatter the chorizo over the top, drizzle over some of the chorizo oil and serve seasoned with a little more black pepper.

Stir the flour, yeast and a pinch of salt together in a large bowl. Pour in the milk, along with the butter and egg and mix to combine. Knead well for 5-10min until the dough is smooth and elastic. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to a 40cm-long oblong. Scatter the filling over the dough, and brush water down one of the long edges. Roll up to the watered edge. Cut off the ends and slice into 12. Put the slices on two lined baking sheets, cover with oiled cling film and leave to rise for 45min. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/ Gas 6. Bake the wheels for 20min.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/Fan 170°C/Gas 5. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork. Bake in the oven for 1hr-1hr 15min until tender (or part-cook in the microwave for 10min and finish off in the oven for 20min to crisp up). Cut the potatoes in half and scoop out the flesh into a bowl. Add the soured cream and cheese, and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the spring onions, corn and most of the bacon. Place the jacket potato shells on a baking tray. Spoon the filling into the skins and return the jackets to the oven for 15min to heat through. Sprinkle the remaining bacon and flat-leaf parsley over the top to serve.

Season with salt and pepper and bring to a simmer. Cook for 15min. Toast the pitta breads, spoon in the chilli and serve topped with the mashed avocado and soured cream.

Slash the chicken thighs several times, then put them in a shallow baking dish and sprinkle over the Peri-Peri salt, oregano, garlic and oil. Use small skewers to secure the chicken thighs into neat shapes. Pour over the Peri-Peri marinade, taking care to cover each of the chicken pieces. Cover and leave in the fridge to marinate for at least a couple of hours or overnight – the longer you leave it the more intense the flavour will be. Cook the chicken under a hot grill for 20mins, turning often, until slightly charred and the juices run clear when a knife is inserted.

250g all-butter puff pastry 8tbsp Carnation Caramel 2 small red-skinned apples, cored 1tbsp lemon juice Pinch of ground cinnamon Demerara sugar

Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/ Gas 6. Roll out the pastry to the thickness of a £1 coin. Cut out 8 rounds using a 10cm cutter and place them on a large baking sheet lined with baking paper.
Score a 1cm border around the edge of each pastry disc, then prick the inner circle with a fork. Spoon 1 tbsp caramel into the centre of each dish, leaving a 1cm gap from the scored edge. Thinly slice the apples into half-moon shapes, then toss with the lemon juice and cinnamon. Lay the apple slices over the caramel, sprinkle with a little sugar and bake for 10-15min, or until golden.

FIREWORK BROWNIES TAKES 35MIN MAKES 12 250g butter 200g dark chocolate, broken into chunks 75g cocoa 75g plain flour 1tsp baking powder 300g caster sugar 5 eggs 1tsp vanilla extract 1 pack of Rolos, halved 20g popping candy

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas 4. Line a 20x30cm baking tin with baking paper. Melt the butter in a pan over a low heat, add the chocolate and heat gently for 1min. Remove from the heat and keep stirring until melted. Sift the cocoa, flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Stir in the caster sugar, then stir in the eggs, vanilla and melted chocolate mixture. Spoon the mix into the tin and use a palette knife or the back of a spoon to smooth over the top. Scatter the rolo halves over the brownie, pressing them down into the mix slightly. Bake for 25min until cooked, but still squidgy. Leave to cool in the tin, cut into squares and sprinkle over the popping candy just before serving.

Use a little vegetable oil to grease an 18cm square baking tin. Put the sugar, syrup and 2tbsp water into a heavybased pan. Let the sugar dissolve slowly over a low heat then bring it to the boil. Using a sugar thermometer, boil until crack stage (156°C) is reached – this won’t take long. If you don’t have a thermometer, drop a little mix from the tip of a spoon into a cup of cold water – it should harden and crack at once. Quickly stir in the bicarbonate of soda and then immediately pour the mix into the prepared tin. Use an oiled knife to score squares into the mix then leave to set for about an hour. Or, once set, turn it out onto a chopping board lined with baking paper and use a small hammer to break it up. Once crisp, store in an airtight tin.
