Hurrah! There’s a nip in the air, so I’ve launched myself into full-on snuggling mode. Don’t get me wrong – I love the summer and mellow autumn days, too, but it’s just that on the sofa with a hot choc-slash-G&T, hunkering under a cosy throw, is my favourite place to be! Of course, it’s a sweet excuse to load up on wintery accessories, because a home can never have enough cute tealights or faux-fur cushions. Or anything with pom-poms on, basically. There’s loads to love in this issue – and shopping for it is super-easy now that we’ve teamed up with Ownable. Just download the app, search for Style at Home and put in the number of the page you’re looking at, to find all the products on it ready to buy. I know – this could be dangerous, especially after a second G&T!

ABOUT ME I’m 25 and I live in a two-bedroom flat in Essex with my boyfriend William, 28. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM? I’m lucky that William lets me have free rein over the decor, so I’ve turned our spare bedroom into a spacious, girlie dressing room – it’s so handy for getting dolled up for a night out!

Jessica Charge

ABOUT ME I’m 45, I live in a four-bedroom detached period house in Scarborough and blog at thecreativecoastalhome.com WHERE DO YOU GET DECORATING IDEAS? I read homes magazines and follow a number of blogs. I’m a keen crafter and upcycler, so I also watch TV shows like Fill Your House For Free and Money For Nothing.

Kate Duckmanton

ABOUT ME I’m 40 and I live in a Thirties semi-detached house in Southampton with my husband Matt, 46, and son Isaac, two. WHAT’S YOUR BEST MONEYSAVING TIP? It’s worth spending money on an accessory if you really love it and it’s a key part of a room, but don’t invest in trends you can buy cheaply on the high street.

ABOUT ME I’m 41, and live with my husband Peter, 45, and our children Mabel, eight, and Rufus, six, in a modern detached in Buckingham. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY? Looking back, I wish I had been more adventurous with using patterns in my home, instead of thinking that ‘clean lines’ meant plain colours.

Glenn Riddle

Robyn Swain ABOUT ME I’m 27 and I live with my husband Sam, 31, and daughters Mischa, seven, and Izzy, five, in a Seventies mid-terrace in Lancashire. WHAT’S YOUR NEXT PROJECT? I plan to give our dining area a makeover, including putting up new skirting and door frames, and fitting a half wall of board and batten, plus building a unit for my baking stuff.

SHOW IT OFF! Proud of your latest project? Whether it’s a whole-house redo or just an Instagram-worthy shelfie, we want to see it! Email us at styleathome@ti-media.com with some photos and your hard work could be featured in a future issue.

River Island’s vibrant Electric Opulence edit

It could be designer!

HOMEWARE AT RIVER ISLAND When fashion brands take on interiors, it’s always a winning formula and River Island is no exception. The Baby Doll range features sequined cushions and faux fur, while the paisley prints in the Electric Opulence collection have a goth-glam edge, and New Nordic is a more neutral affair. In selected stores and online.

High-street

Look a little familiar…? Okay, there’s no denying it’s a designer copycat but the Frida pendant, £32.99 from Studio, is a convincing double of Tom Dixon’s much-loved light. Now you can add a dramatic feature to a dining space or living room at a fraction of the price.

NEW REASONS TO LOVE HOMEBASE… This DIY staple is also stepping up its design game for autumn. We love the back-to-school vibe of the metal-framed chairs; their slimline frame makes them perfect for small spaces and the stools, £10, could double up as bargain bedside tables. Velvet Taper light shades give a bohemian-luxe look for just £15 each, and don’t miss the Scandi-style rugs from £25.

‘I mixed styles IDEA TO STEAL PATTERN HIT ‘The chevron throw breaks up the grey sofa with a funky design’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Beck Hanson, 39, and I live with my partner Marc, 40. MY HOME A three-bedroom semi-detached in West Yorkshire, which we bought in 2006. WHEN I BOUGHT IT Although the previous owners had done some work, the interior was basic and felt unloved. The rooms were liveable, but we wanted to make lots of cosmetic changes over time. AND NOW The house has a distinctive eclectic style and is filled with a mixture of retro designs and Scandi-style pieces. Marc and I love colour so we’ve used plenty of it to give each room character. STYLE TIP If you’ve fallen out of love with a piece in your home, try moving it into a different room or revamping it with a lick of paint.

his property was originally built in 1836 as a school for underprivileged children, with one side for girls and the other for boys – in more recent years, it was split into two houses,’ says Beck. ‘My partner Marc and I had been looking in the area as we were keen to stay within easy access of both Manchester and Leeds.’ We nearly didn’t come to see this house as it’s on a main road, but once here, we were drawn to the spectacular views from the back, and it had plenty of storage which was high on our priority list. Our offer was accepted after a second viewing but unfortunately it fell through on the day we were due to exchange contracts, as our buyers pulled out. We were devastated and thought we had lost the house. However, some time later, we found a new buyer – and luckily, our dream home was still on the market.

Size matters One of the main reasons we fell in love with the house was the amount of space it offered and the layout over three floors. The ground floor consists of a large openplan kitchen-diner/reception room – great for entertaining and socialising. Although we haven’t changed the Ikea kitchen since moving in 12 years ago, the layout works well for us and the breakfast bar helps it feel separate from the dining area. We tend to spend our evenings in the lower ground floor sitting room – it’s got a cosier feel due to the lower ceilings and the wood-burning stove. The three bedrooms upstairs provide us with lots of storage and Marc uses one for work.

It’s a small room, so there wasn’t much we could do in terms of its layout and we ended up sourcing all the new pieces individually through eBay to save money. We’d like to renovate it properly in the future so for now I use accessories to give it some character. Colour plays a vital role in my interior style, as I grew up in a home full of vibrant shades. I start by painting the walls of a room in a neutral hue, and then introduce colour through textiles, wall art and accessories. I tend to go for bold prints in mid-century and Scandi designs, as well as posters from our favourite festivals. The way I’ve decorated each room is relevant to the way we use the different spaces and the atmosphere we wanted

The La Redoute rug is a real statement piece and also compensates for the cold Yorkshire stone flag flooring. The main bedroom is light and airy as we wanted the space to feel serene and calm. The walls are painted grey and the room has a Scandi-inspired feel, using pops of colour to tie it in with the rest of the house.

Getting creative I tend to tire of things quite easily, so I have found that upcycling furniture is a perfect way to keep the look fresh without denting my bank balance too often! I generally use chalk paint as it’s

ABOUT ME I’m Jenny Swift, 37, a fashion merchandiser, and I live with my husband Darren, 38, his daughter Grace, 12, and our daughter Thea, who’s three. MY HOME We live in a fourbedroom Thirties semi-detached house in Rothley, Leicestershire, which we bought in February 2014. WHEN I BOUGHT IT It had been quite neglected for some years, and while the extended part of the house was relatively modern, the rest had issues including damp and rot, and was in desperate need of updating. AND NOW It’s stylish, colourful and full of character. STYLE TIP Buy big pieces from second-hand stores to save money for styling and finishing touches.

FALLING APART’ Excited by the potential of her new home, Jenny hadn’t counted on the amount of work it would need…

W

hen our house search began in early 2014, my husband Darren and I knew we wanted a spacious family home in need of a little work that we could make our own,’ says Jenny. ‘We spotted this property on Rightmove, and it appeared to tick all of our boxes. Despite being cluttered and painted in a cocktail of garish colours, it had the potential to become the home we had in mind. However, we soon realised that the work required was more than cosmetic.

Starting from scratch

MODERN MAKEOVER ‘The kitchen was luminous yellow with layers of sticky lino tiles and dark units. We gave it a contemporary cream and grey scheme’

We received the keys in February 2014 but the house was far from ready, so Darren and I moved in with my parents while the renovation took place. We gutted almost the entire property. We ripped out the kitchen, the bathroom and the carpets, taking it more or less back to its foundations so we could first focus on fixing structural damage. The house comprises two parts, the original Thirties building and an extension which was added about 10 years ago. The newer rooms, including the sitting room/ playroom, just needed a decor refresh, but the older part of the house was an entirely different story. It had damp, so our first big task was stripping walls of paper and plaster to apply a treatment. But that was nothing compared with what we found in the kitchen, behind the units. Only after removing the cabinets did we realise to our horror that there was no insulation, and that you could almost see straight through the wall to the outside! And the disappointment didn’t end there, as the gorgeous wooden floorboards we hoped we’d be able to restore and keep in place were, in fact, rotting, and had to be removed. It quickly dawned on us that most things in

Keen to create the home we’d had our hearts set on, despite the setbacks, we quickly called in professionals to sort the insulation – or lack thereof – in the kitchen. We had the walls plastered, concrete poured where our wooden floors would’ve been, and an electrician friend popped over every Saturday morning for weeks to fix the wiring. Only when the property was structurally sound could we begin giving the interior a facelift. We found our ideal kitchen units – which we decided to buy in two shades for a contrasting look – in Ikea, and replaced the bright yellow walls with a more subtle grey shade and decorative tiles. We chose Farrow & Ball paint for both the family room and the sitting room/playroom, and hung statement wallpapers – a complete

‘IGNORE TRENDS UNLESS YOU GENUINELY LOVE THEM – WHAT’S ON TREND ONE MINUTE WILL BE OUTDATED THE NEXT’ contrast to the neon orange Seventies scheme that was in place in both rooms. Thankfully, the upstairs required a lot less work than downstairs, though we did decide to knock two smaller bedrooms into one and we extended and converted a cloakroom into an en suite. But even though the work went to plan, it wasn’t without a few minor dramas. One day, Darren and I were decorating the main bedroom when the handle came off the door, locking us in the room. We were alone in the house – and Darren suffers from claustrophobia. In the end, we had to phone the police to ask if a nearby officer could break in and let us out!

From house to home I’m beyond proud of all we’ve achieved in what was a really run-down property. We were both working full-time throughout the renovation, which meant a lot of late nights on site, driving between houses and living without a lot of our belongings. We also got married the same year, which made life very hectic, but unforgettable. I’d say the kitchen has been our biggest achievement. It’s undergone a huge transformation, and has become my favourite room in the house. I’ve always wanted to have a kitchen big enough to accommodate a dining table for family meals, and finally I have one. Next on our to-do list is to build a porch, as our hall is minuscule, and then tackle the driveway. We’re not 100% finished yet, but we’ve come a really long way, and completing those last little tasks will be the icing on the cake.’

ABOUT ME I’m Anne Freeland, 48, and I live here with my husband, Jeremy, 48, and children, Grace, 18, May, 16, Charlie, 14 and Harry, 13. MY HOME A detached house, built in the Eighties, in Oxfordshire. WHEN WE BOUGHT IT It had just two storeys. The downstairs rooms were quite small and boxy, and the decor was busy and tired. AND NOW The house has been replanned and is light, spacious and modern. It now has three storeys, with a main bedroom and en-suite in the loft, and a kitchendiner on the ground floor, plus a new snug, study, hall and utility. STYLE TIP Choose a neutral palette and then, to inject a touch of striking colour and drama, add a few bolder dark tones.

IN THE EIGHTIES!’ Anne and Jeremy would need vision, skills and talent to turn a bland property into a stylish, Scandiinfluenced home

W

hen my husband Jeremy and I moved here from London in 1999, we bought a 400-year-old cottage,’ says Anne. ‘It was quirky and jam-packed with period features, including beams, an inglenook fireplace and wonky floorboards. Jeremy runs a company called Collars which makes hand-crafted wooden oars, masts and spars for boats, and he’s great at woodwork and all sorts of DIY jobs. I’ve got a background in fashion and textiles and just love interiors, so we both relished putting our stamp on the cottage. Although it was initially ideal, after our four children came along, it became increasingly tight for space and there was no way of extending.

On the hunt We started house-hunting in earnest in 2013. As weeks rolled into months, nothing we viewed appealed at all. Running out of options, we decided to view this Eighties house – just a fiveminute walk away from our cottage. We were really impressed by its location. It was a corner plot with a gated driveway and ample parking. It felt secluded and peaceful. Inside, the surprises continued. Jeremy and I were bowled over by the vast potential this dated house offered. Walking from room to room, we could easily see how, with time and effort, we could radically reconfigure the layout.

The planning DREAM ISLAND ‘I’m thrilled with our island that Jeremy made. It’s been painted in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe to match our feature walls and, because it can be moved, it’s extremely versatile’

Downstairs, the galley kitchen was crying out to be knocked through to create an open-plan kitchen-diner, while converting the garage into an adjoining snug seemed straightforward. The hall was spacious and there was a downstairs loo, plus another room. On the first floor, there

UPCYCLED CHIC ‘This old wooden cupboard, which I upcycled with a lick of Farrow & Ball’s Charleston Gray eggshell, is the ideal spot to display much-loved family photographs’

were four good-sized bedrooms, a family bathroom that the boys could use, and an en-suite that both girls could share. We discovered the attic had plenty of headroom and, with a bit of creative thinking on the positioning of a new staircase, Jeremy reckoned we could transform the loft into a bright and airy master bedroom, complete with an en-suite and dressing area. Despite the dated decor, it was the only house that we’d seen that had such scope for our family’s needs. It also had a lovely feel. We moved in towards the end of 2014.

Working with wood Realising that knocking through the kitchen, fitting new units and installing a huge wooden beam made by Jeremy, would all be very disruptive, we celebrated Christmas in our new home and started the first phase of our renovation project in January 2015. Rather than having no kitchen at all,

‘Mood boards or Pinterest boards are a fun and helpful way to visualise different styles and see what works together, particularly for multiple room projects like this one.’

ICONIC INFLUENCE ‘I still love this wooden dining table that we bought 14 years ago. The Eames-style chairs add a retro touch and aren’t too bulky in this relatively narrow space’

Do it! GALLEY KITCHEN TIPS Introduce the classic working triangle. Arrange the key task zones of fridge, cooker and sink at three separate points so that it’s easy to flit from one to the other. Go for cupboards in a pale palette and introduce reflective surfaces to bounce light and make the room feel more spacious. For a light feel, choose an all-white scheme. A pretty voile blind will soften the look, and add pops of colour with accessories that can be easily changed. Handle-free doors are great in a narrow space as you’re less likely to bang into them when moving around the room. A symmetrical design will feel more balanced – think about creating visual balance, for example having taller units like the fridge and wall cupboards facing each other.

we installed the new units in two stages. It looked slightly odd for a while since we had a run of old units down one side and the sleek new ones down the other. With Jeremy having such a passion for wood, we decided to go for oak floorboards throughout most of the downstairs rooms and oak worktops, linking through to our handy island/breakfast bar.

JESSICA SAYS

A joint effort Throughout our project, Jeremy has been absolutely fantastic. If a task sprung up that he wasn’t familiar with, he’d have a look on YouTube and work out how to tackle it. To save space in the kitchen, we turned a lean-to shed outside into a utility room. Having carefully considered how to shave a few metres off Grace’s bedroom to make room for our new staircase (and with planning permission granted), we hired a loft conversion firm to do the main structural work. Jeremy then tackled the insulating, plastering and painting himself. We then converted the garage into a family-friendly snug. We wanted to make this space feel like a proper room,

‘Create your own original features – if your room is modern or lacking in character, add some yourself, as Jeremy has done with the handmade ceiling beams in the couple’s converted garage.’

BRIGHT IDEA ‘I sourced a funky mirror from HomeSense to bounce light around this corner of the room’

‘USE CARPET TO CREATE A COSIER FEEL IN SOME ROOMS LIKE WE HAVE DONE IN THE SNUG. IT’S LOVELY AND WARM UNDERFOOT’ TOUCH OF DRAMA ‘I tend to gravitate towards grey shades, and chose Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe, both as a dramatic pop of colour and to link to the wall tiles in our kitchen’

Where to buy her style

‘If you fall for a boldpatterned wallpaper, don’t shy away from using it’

Shop Anne’s look DESIGN VINTAGE ‘It stocks furniture, soft furnishings and accessories that complement our home really well. I particularly love its cushions and baskets.’ HOMESENSE ‘Great for adding individual touches. I find it’s particularly good for unique mirrors – most of our mirrors have been bought from there.’ H&M HOME ‘Perfect for reasonably-priced cushions and accessories. I’ve bought cushion covers for as little as £3.99 each.’ IKEA ‘When I need a storage solution, Ikea is my go-to store. The Kallax unit is so versatile. We’ve used it in our study for books and in the hall for shoes.’ THE RANGE ‘This store always come up trumps when I’m looking for clocks. Great for accessories, such as barn stars and candles.’

‘REFRESH THE LOOK WITH NEW CUSHION COVERS – ONE OF THE EASIEST, LEAST EXPENSIVE WAYS OF UPDATING YOUR HOME’

rather than just an 'obvious' garage conversion. After removing the plasterboard ceiling and uncovering the vaulted area, Jeremy painstakingly made the wooden beams for the snug. They are a wonderful feature that draw the eye upwards and add character to this cosy space.

Creating Scandi style I’ve adored choosing colours, furniture and soft furnishings, and pulling all the spaces together. I didn’t have a masterplan but I knew that I wanted our house to be a very welcoming Scandiinfluenced family home. It has a neutral backdrop with darker tones for added impact. I tend to favour grey shades and love injecting accents such as copper or rose gold, and plenty of personal touches.

Worth all the effort THRIFTY TRANSFORMATION ‘Instead of replacing the boys’ bathroom suite, we’ve updated it with a fresh lick of paint, new wooden flooring and some stylish accessories’

52 | NOVEMBER 2018

Juggling the building work, four children and a dog has undoubtedly had its moments. At one stage when Jeremy and I were, for months, sleeping in what has become our study, I did wonder why on earth we’d ever left our cottage, but the disruption has been worth it. We all now feel so lucky to be living in a home we love, in a beautiful part of the world.’

SQUEEZE IN A WORKSPACE Swap a desk for a shelf unit such as the Ekby Alex shelf from Ikea, which also includes a couple of drawers to stash work stuff. Make one piece of furniture work harder – a dressing table in the bedroom can double up as a desk space. Keep paperwork in a box to limit clutter. Make use of dead spaces such as on the landing, under the stairs or even in a built-in wardrobe! Look out for ladder-style desks that can be propped up against the wall and offer extra shelving.

STYLE SECRETS Recreate Anne’s look with these top tips and ideas BE BOLD WITH COLOUR Break free from safe neutrals and brave it with a darker paint shade such as navy, charcoal or emerald green. If you have a long room – like Anne’s dining space – painting a shorter end wall a darker shade will make it appear to come forward, so the room feels shorter and squarer, rather than overly long. Or if you have a large open-plan area, painting one or two darker accent walls is a good way of breaking up the space and defining the different zones.

SIZE-UP A MIRROR As a general rule, if you’re hanging a large mirror or piece of art above a fireplace, aim for one roughly two-thirds the width of the mantel, rather than one that lines up exactly with the edges. Hang it horizontally, so it finishes around 12-15cm above the mantel, with the centre at eye level. Or, if you want to create the illusion of height, hang it vertically instead and the wall will appear taller.

TAKE TO THE SLOPES Make a feature of the slanting ceiling in a loft room, by papering the end wall in a bold feature wallpaper to accentuate the room’s shape. Paint adjoining walls and sloping sections in a pale, co-ordinating shade rather than wallpaper, so any wonky walls or uneven lines aren’t accentuated.

the STYLE RULES Go bold with a lively palette and graphic prints

Soften angular shapes by introducing cosy textures like tactile velvet bedding

Create a vibrant mid-century scheme by combining abstract patterns with curvy furnishings. INTRODUCE GEOMETRIC PRINTS Abstract wallcoverings and textiles in blue, grey and mustard create an authentic mid-century feel. MIX AND MATCH DESIGNS Don’t be afraid to clash prints. If a full wall is too bold for you, frame a section of wallpaper instead.

REAL VS REPRO Light wood furniture offers mid-century charm. Look out for classic styles indicative of the era on auction sites or pick up reproductions from Made.com and Loaf. ZONE AREAS WITH PAINT If you use one room for multiple activities (for example study and sleep), consider using paint to distinguish between the areas.

‘The blue and yellow paired together in this room is so vibrant and gives off so much energy! The patterned furniture is a great touch.’

the STYLE RULES Update classic designs with modern colours Create a family-friendly space with a retro vibe using fun prints and practical designs. LAYER UP COLOUR Opt for a pared-back palette of neutrals boosted with soft blues and a punch of yellow. GO GEO ON WALLS Choose a statement wallpaper featuring

spots and stripes in a muted colourway. Vertical lines will make ceilings appear higher. SAVE ON SPACE Marry strong Scandi aesthetics with practicality. Look for multifunctional pieces such as a sleek coffee table with a shelf underneath for storing books.

Style

Maker GLENN SAYS

the STYLE RULES Moody greys and blues are lifted by playful details This cultivated look layers mid-century motifs with natural textures and streamlined shapes. OPT FOR LINEAR MOTIFS Hang wallpaper with a compact linear print. Negative outlines on a neutral background really stand out. Avoid cluttering walls with small frames and busy art. ADD COLOUR CONTRAST Create depth using varying tones of grey.

Accessories in midnight blue add contrast when teamed with white or cream accents. LAYER TEXTURES Allow texture to do the talking in the rest of the room. Slubby linen upholstery, a cosy throw and a mottled woven rug are all tactile additions. DON’T DISTRACT Slim furniture and a tonal carpet ensures all attention is on the wallpaper.

‘You can get this look quite cheaply. Invest in a statement chair, find Danish-style units in Ikea or Habitat, and finish with a large framed geo artwork.’

A high shelf in white is almost invisible

the STYLE RULES Kit out the kitchen with plenty of Fifties charm Start your day with a cheer surrounded by gleaming whites and nostalgic finds. MAKE IT BRIGHT Begin with a light and airy blank canvas featuring white cupboards and timeless metro tiles. PICK PRIMARY COLOURS Be playful with bright shades

and add classic textile prints like checks and stripes. GO FOR THE SAME GRAINS For a cohesive feel, choose similar types of wood for floors, worktops and furniture. Pick mismatched chairs in a few different colours to give the room a modern edge.

Frame Fifties and Sixties posters to complete the look

the STYLE RULES Don your sunglasses for this lively mid-century look Immerse yourself in a nostalgic scheme of geometric forms and authentic design. BE BOLD WITH WALLPAPER Go all out mid-century with a busy linear wallpaper in a bold shade of blue. FOCUS ON FORM So as not to distract from the walls, go for interesting forms instead of more patterns. Plywood pendant lights in fun shapes are evocative of the era.

OPT FOR LIGHT GRAINS Light wood furniture in simple midcentury shapes is best, while open shelving will further show off wallpaper. Co-ordinate with a laminate floor in a similar grain. ADD POPS OF BRIGHT YELLOW Accessorise with sunshine yellow for a lively contrast against the blue. For a finishing touch, add a few nostalgic kitchenware items.

‘Geometric art and large fabric wall hangings or canvases can also help you achieve this look, if hanging wallpaper isn’t an option in your home.’

Bring walls to life with a gallery of fun shelving and favourite prints

the STYLE RULES Brighten up your living space with teal and yellow Capture the positive spirit of the Fifties and Sixties using playful colours and patterns. GO DEEP ON WALLS Choose a deep matt emulsion paint for walls in teal or turquoise. ADD FUN TEXTILES Maximise the feeling of space with neutral furnishings, adding

quirky mid-century textile prints. Lozenges, squovals and simple flower shapes work well. BE ACCESSORY SAVVY Carry the colour scheme through your accessories and textiles. LAY NATURAL FLOORING A neutral seagrass carpet is attractive and hardwearing.

STYLE UPDATE Have fun with these simple but creative ideas that’ll ring the changes without turning into a full room redo

1

Room with a view

Create a line-up of pictures to fill empty wall space above a living room sofa. Display framed prints and photos on a slimline picture ledge rather than hanging them on the wall, so you’ll be able to swap them around or rearrange if you fancy a change later on.

76 | NOVEMBER 2018

Swap one large coffee table for two smaller ones, so you can shift them around easily

EASY UPDATES

2

6

Step-by-step

Upcycle an old wooden step ladder and use the rung section as a hanging rail for sofa throws. Once its clean and paint-free, sand the surface smooth and finish with stain or varnish. Then just prop against the wall and snake your blankets through the rails.

3

Multi-use storage

Tame living room clutter with a wall of storage. Invest in a modular shelving unit so you can tailor each of the cubbies to your needs. Leave some open for displaying objects and fill the rest with baskets and organisers so untidy odds and ends stay hidden. Finish with a clip-on light at each end for a smart look.

CLEVER MAKE

Revamp a cabinet by replacing handles with leather tabs. Cut an old belt into 10cm lengths, fold in half and drill a hole through to make tabs. Use brass washers and screws to attach to furniture.

4

Layer up

Keep draughts at bay over winter by adding thermal linings to your curtains. Make no-sew panels to attach to existing curtains using velcro, or buy readymade linings that simply clip on from behind (from £14 a pair, Dunelm).

5

Wheely clever

Upcycle a storage pallet to create an industrial-style coffee table on castors. Clean up the pallet first, sanding it down to get rid of rough edges and hammer in any loose nails. Finish off with your choice of wood stain, paint or varnish, then attach four castors (£8 for four, Ikea) to the base.

Colour co-ordinate

Revamp a shelving unit to tie in with your colour theme. Use leftover lengths of wallpaper in matching patterns and colours as a backdrop to shelves, and team with storage boxes in complementary shades.

Mirror image

Upgrade a frameless mirror with glass-frosting spray (£9.49, Rust-Oleum) to create an etched border effect. Mask off the central area first, then use peelable washi tape to create a patterned border before frosting.

BRIGHT IDEA

11 9

Think pink

If you’ve got a favourite print or a colourful piece of artwork you love, make a statement with a bold arrangement. Paint a console or sideboard in the same bright shade, hang your artwork above and display a colourful group of decorative items on top.

Use metallic flexible fabric spray paint (£4.99 for 150ml, Rust-Oleum) to revamp an old lampshade. Mask off the exterior, then give the inside two coats of shiny colour.

12

Paint magic

Jazz up plain fabric cushions by painting on a design using chalk paint (£5.95 for 120ml, Annie Sloan). Use a stencil to monogram an initial or, if you’re artistic, try a freehand design – just heat seal once dry with a hot iron.

Colour match artwork with paint for a chic, co-ordinated look

14

Go halves

Add a hit of colour to a room without committing to a full-on scheme by painting just half the wall. Putting a darker shade on the bottom half will draw the eye up and add height to a room – while putting the colour at the top will have the opposite effect in a lofty room with a high ceiling.

NOVEMBER 2018 | 79

Warm up walls with a busy wallpaper – use a rustic all-over leaf design inside alcoves

15

Winter warmers

Pop in a pattern

Give a gallery wall a colour theme by mixing in a few framed wallpaper samples or craft papers in co-ordinating colours. Or, make backing sheets for your photos – just cut them to frame size and position pics on top.

17

Take a shelfie

If coloured book spines are causing a colour clash, try an alternative arrangement with books stacked back-to-front instead. It’ll be harder to find your favourite, but having just the pages on show will keep shelves looking neat and neutral.

EASY MAKE

Get a fire blazing using waxed pine cones to start it off. Make your own using dried-out cones dipped in melted candle wax (£8 a block, Hobbycraft). Pop cones onto waxed paper to set.

‘I wanted to IDEA TO STEAL ‘Adjust a room’s light and privacy to suit your needs with tier-on-tier shutters’

BLUE BLEND ‘Painting the fire surround in the same finish as the chimney breast gives the room a contemporary feel’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Andrew Griffiths, an associate director for a PR agency, and I live in a one-bedroom first-floor flat within a Victorian conversion in Crouch End, north London. MY CHALLENGE To make the most of the room’s beautiful period windows and turn a dark, dated area into a lighter, brighter space to spend time in. MY WISH LIST I love contemporary interiors and wanted to add energy and impact using a colour palette that was both dramatic and masculine.

INJECT DRAMA’ Andrew combined modern style with a bold, vibrant colour palette to add impact to his living room

I

had previously always rented, so this property was my first real home of my own,’ says Andrew. ‘I was excited at the opportunity to create my own interior and showcase all the furniture that I’d collected over the years.’ When I first viewed the flat, it didn’t seem like there was much work needed, but once I’d moved in I decided to give it a top-to-toe refurbishment. The living room was the first area to be tackled as I have a demanding job and needed a space to relax and unwind at the end of a working day.

Getting started The worst aspect was the floor, which had been stained in a dark orange-brown colour with a very high shine. The thick varnish hid all the natural grain and sapped the character out of the floor. I decided to strip the timber boards and have them waxed in a very light grey finish, which immediately made the room look much larger. The feature windows, which I loved, originally had polyester red curtains that hung limply either side, so I went for bespoke shutters which give some privacy, but don’t block out the natural light.

Colour choice

MODERN VIBE ‘Painting two walls in an inky-blue tone creates depth and draws attention to the newly built alcoves and fireplace. The soft-grey paint on the wall highlights the windows’

I took my time choosing the paint finish for the walls. The previous owner had painted the chimney breast sky blue and used a muddy magnolia for the remaining walls, which made the room look lifeless. I wanted to create energy and impact using a colour palette that was both dramatic and masculine. I also have a large book collection and I picked a colour that would act as a dark backdrop and make the book spines stand out. I think having just one feature wall is a bit old fashioned, so I decided to paint two walls in Stiffkey Blue and the other

SLEEK AND LOW ‘The modern sofa adds a touch of mid-century style – I love its clean lines’

SPLASH OF COLOUR ‘Yellow and blue are my favourite colours. I like the way the geometric block and yellow cushions add a vibrant contrast with the dark-blue walls’

two in soft grey Ammonite. Both are from Farrow & Ball, and I think the grey perfectly complements the darker blue tone. I had bespoke shelving built into the alcoves and also finished them in Stiffkey Blue so they’d blend into the background.

‘Build shelving into alcoves to maximise space and provide useful storage’

New layout A corner recess which had previously been ignored became the perfect position for a leather armchair that I’d bought years ago. It’s right next to one of the windows, making it a bright spot in the morning to sit and read a newspaper and have a coffee. Adding a vintage lamp with an ethnic-inspired lampshade, as well as a selection of rich, textured fabrics, brings the eclectic element I wanted to add to the sitting room.

The right lighting With its high Victorian ceilings, the room seemed to be calling out for a statement light fitting, but I didn’t want to go traditional. I chose a structured, industrialstyle light that had the big architectural impact of a designer piece, but at a high-street price. You can move the arms around and tilt it for mood lighting. The whole project took about a month to complete and was a labour of love, as I did most of it myself. I’ve been studying to be an interior designer (find me on Insta @andrewjonathandesign) and refurbishing my new home was my first chance to put all my ideas into action. Attention to detail is something I’m passionate about and I’m proud of the way the new sitting room looks. When it’s sunny, the light floods through the beautiful windows and although it’s close to central London, you feel like you’re in a calm, tranquil space.’

‘DON’T BE AFRAID TO GO FOR A CONTEMPORARY LOOK IN A PERIOD PROPERTY. INJECT CHARACTER THAT’S UNIQUE TO YOU INTO A ROOM’

LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER

Love it

Do it! MAKE DARK WALLS WORK Pick the right paint finish. Gloss might add the glam factor, but it shows up every imperfection on the wall’s surface – matt is kinder. Work with the right accent shades. Warm yellow is a great pairing for dark blue. Neutral surfaces, such as a crisp white ceiling and pale-wood floor, also act as a foil for strong colour. Paint architectural features such as built-in shelves and fireplaces in the same dramatic shade for maximum impact in a room. Don’t dismiss dark shades as an option if your room is on the small side. Dark walls add drama and height that works just as well in smaller spaces. Dark walls can also help striking art prints really pop, so are a great option as a feature wall behind an collection of artwork.

‘I like to showcase all the items I’ve collected over the years’

REST AND RELAXATION ‘This corner alcove provides a cosy reading nook. I painted an inherited standard lamp in Stiffkey Blue to match the walls’

‘It was a total

FANTASTIC FLOOR ‘I spent ages looking for affordable patchwork tiles. I snapped these up at B&Q while they were on offer’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Emily Waddecar, 26. I’m a UX designer and I live with my cocker spaniel in a three-bedroom, Twenties semi in Lancashire, bought in March 2017. It’s my first house and needed top-to-bottom renovating! MY CHALLENGE The house was almost derelict and full of spiders! There was a dining room and a tiny, dark kitchen, with mouldy walls, collapsing cupboards and a leak from the bathroom above. MY WISHLIST A practical, openplan space with lots of light and somewhere to entertain friends. It had to be stylish and symmetrical, with a bit of an industrial feel.

FAMILY EFFORT’ WONDER WALLS ‘I was originally looking for a geometric wallpaper, but I fell for this palm-leaf design as soon as I saw it. The green is so fresh and I love having lush plants around, so it’s perfect’

DIY-savvy relatives pitched in to turn Emily’s derelict kitchen into a lightfilled, sociable space

A

s a first-time buyer, I was looking for an affordable doer-upper. This house was in a really awful state, but having lots of my family, including my mum and dad, in the building trade put me in a great position. I had masses of expertise on hand to sort it out, and everyone rallied round to help me achieve my vision on a budget.

Making a start The house had been empty for months and was a complete mess inside, but the high ceilings, big rooms and amazing light flooding in at the back all really appealed. At first I thought I’d keep the dining room and kitchen separate, but the kitchen was small and too dark, so knocking down the dividing wall was an obvious move. The kitchen worked best in the corner, leaving space for a table, and I knew I wanted a breakfast bar with stools, because I love having friends over for a glass of wine or a coffee and a chat.

I like modern and vintage looks, and I prefer angles and straight lines to curves. Top of my wishlist were the metro wall tiles. They’re not too expensive and it’s easy to create interesting effects. They also fit in with the clean, functional vibe I wanted. Brick was another must-have material for that industrial edge, and I was thrilled that we could re-use the bricks from the dining-room wall to build the breakfast bar. I fancied patchwork-style floor tiles and I set my heart on solid oak worktops and chunky, open wooden shelves for easy storage. I’d decided on plain white units, and I had to watch costs to afford those luxury wooden worktops! Mum and Dad recommended B&Q kitchen furniture, which they’ve fitted before, and I picked up well-priced cupboards that were perfect. I found my appliances and flooring there too. TILE STYLE ‘This herringbone layout adds a fresh twist’

90 | NOVEMBER 2018

As soon as the dividing wall came down I knew I’d done the right thing. The space felt huge, and installing patio doors brought in even more natural light. The old floor came up, a new boiler was installed and the room was stripped back to the brickwork. Three walls were re-plastered and I spent days scraping every tiny bit of mortar and plaster off the remaining wall and cleaning all the bricks we’d saved to build the breakfast bar. I painted two walls mid-grey, and my mum helped me wallpaper one, to add colour to the room. We bought timber and

brackets to make the open shelves, which I’ve stained for an aged look, and my pendant lights were a fantastic car-boot sale find. My parents, brother and cousin did all the building work, plumbing and electrics, following my hand-drawn plans – they were amazing! I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together and I can’t thank my parents enough. This might not be my forever home, but right now I absolutely love it.’

Gently chip away plaster with a masonry hammer and chisel over the area you want to expose. You need to scrape away any loose plaster that’s left with a wire brush, so that the bricks and mortar are completely clear. Give the bricks a good clean. Start at the top of the area, and clean off any dust and residue with warm water and a sponge. Seal the brick, using a specialist brick sealant so that the surface remains in good condition.

EXPOSED BRICKWORK

Emily’s choice...

EXPOSED BRICK WALLS

Consider stripping back to bare brickwork to add rustic charm and instant character

Q

Which wall should I expose? Stick to one wall or a section with natural start and finish points, such as a chimney breast or alcoves. A wall without doors, windows or radiators will be easiest. Any electric cables will also be exposed – galvanised trunking works well with brick’s industrial vibe.

Q

Can I do the work myself? Absolutely. Drill a test hole in the plaster to check the brickwork is worth stripping. If it’s damaged or the colour isn’t your bag, refill the hole. If not, prepare for serious dirt and dust. Cover every surface and seal doors. Work methodically across the wall from left to right, hammering then gently lifting off plasterwork with a trowel or putty knife.

BEST FOR… RECLAIMED BRICKS Cawarden has the UK’s largest stock of reclaimed bricks, and also sells seriously realistic reproduction bricks and brick slips. Brick-matching service and friendly knowledgeable staff.

THE RIGHT TOOLS Jewson is the place for labour-saving tools like a Roughneck Brick & Mortar Gun, to make repointing easier. Stock up on a decent trowel and brick jointer.

LEARNING HOW TO DIY Plastering Workshop has taught bricklaying since 2002 and runs oneand two-day courses, in Bedford or Dumfries, from £119. No previous experience or specialist tools needed.

92 | NOVEMBER 2018

Q

How can I tidy them up? Remove loose cement or brickwork with a stiff brush (not wire), then vacuum the wall. ‘If that leaves exposed cavities it’s best to re-point any gaps, to avoid draughts or creepy-crawlies,’ says DIY interiors vlogger Georgina Burnett, of TheHomeGenie.com. ‘Stop new cement sticking out like a sore thumb by dabbing on watered-down chalk paint to dull it.’

3 of the best BRICKWORK WALLPAPERS

Q

Will they need to be sealed? Sealing will alter the colour and look of the brickwork, which can ruin the look. ‘Once done, it’s impossible to reverse,’ says period property expert Roger Hunt. Sealing can also trap moisture inside the brick, which could be problematic. In moisture-prone kitchens and bathrooms, PVA or terracotta sealant is sensible. On floors, Retrouvius recommends Lithofin’s MN Stain Stop to protect against spills.

QUICK FIX Woodchip & Magnolia Real Brick Effect wallpaper, £75 a roll, Lime Lace Buy now with Ownable

Q

What if I have no original brickwork? Consider brick slips, or veneer bricks, which mimic solid brick but are much thinner; try Eurobrick Systems or Matclad. Once pointed, they’re incredibly realistic. Another option is to hire a bricklayer to build a new wall with reclaimed bricks. In upstairs rooms, consult a structural surveyor regarding load-bearing.

ABOUT ME I’m Sophia Hardy, 35, and I live with my husband Tom, 35, and our children Harrison, five, and Wilf, two, in our four-bedroom terraced house in Lichfield. We moved here in October 2015. MY CHALLENGE The bathroom was extremely dated. The bath had been removed to make room for a double shower. There was damp and the window was rotten. The floor sloped, so nothing was level. MY WISH LIST To reinstall the bath! Not having a bath was a big deal – using the shower to bathe two small boys was a struggle. was A NEW BATH’ Ditching her dated, damp bathroom, Sophia has created a flexible, familyfriendly space

W

e always wanted a house that would be a project, so we could get the exact look we were after, and we’re not afraid of hard work,’ says Sophia. ‘So it was a dream come true when my husband Tom and I finally got the keys to our home in October 2015. However, it needed a lot more work than we originally imagined. The house hadn’t been decorated since the Eighties. The electrics and pipework were almost retro and the walls were in really bad condition. The bathroom was a top priority as I was desperate for a proper bath and a space I could relax in.

Making plans I love all the planning when we are decorating a room and I always start the renovation process with a lot of research on Pinterest, Instagram and of course looking at magazines like Style at Home. I’d seen a bathroom renovation on YouTube with floor tiles that looked wooden. I fell in love with them and knew they would be the basis of the room. From there I planned to have dark wood with grey walls and a pop of colour. I originally wanted brushed brass hardware but the budget wouldn’t allow it – and looking at the finished room I’m glad I went for chrome in the end. With a lot of planning we managed to work out a layout where we could have everything we wanted, including the new suite and shower cubicle.

The hard work TRADITIONAL CHIC ‘I finally got the bath I wanted and went for a classic-style sink and WC and a dark wood bath panel to give the room more depth’

Usually Tom does the majority of our renovations, but as this is our only bathroom we needed it to be renovated as quickly as possible with minimal disruption. We hired a local guy who has helped us out on other rooms so we know how professional he is – Tom’s a perfectionist too, but he knew this builder would do a brilliant job

IDEA TO STEAL ‘Add frosted glass panels to an old door to allow light in’

with renovating the bathroom. He did everything from changing pipework to tiling with our gorgeous new floor tiles. We hit one problem – as the house is over 150 years old the walls and flooring were all off and needed a lot of correcting, which took an extra day and slightly extended our two-week plan. However, it was so nice to have someone else do all the hard work. Tom did a few small jobs – he put two frosted glass panels in the bathroom door to allow light into the hallway and, using an old pine door, made new airing cupboard doors.

Styling the room We needed a big wall cabinet to store our toiletries. I found one in dark wood that worked perfectly with the scheme. I love plants so Tom created a bracket with a hook to hang a plant, which looks really effective. We added a large round mirror from Ikea to create space and a shelf from La Redoute to provide additional storage for accessories. Finishing touches can really transform a space, and I wanted to add a little pop of colour, so we introduced the mustard towels and bath mat. I think my favourite item has to be the bath. We went two years without one, so it’s a real luxury to have a hot bath with a nice glass of wine. The boys love bathing together and playing in the water and after two weeks of borrowing the neighbours’ bathrooms during the renovation I really appreciate how much I love the room and will never take it for granted.’

Do it! FAUX WOOD FLOORING Wood-effect ceramic and porcelain tiles are now more realistic than ever. They offer the character of wood but are more practical. Tiles are a great solution in bathroom spaces as they can be used in wet areas such as showers. Vinyl flooring feels softer underfoot and is a fuss-free alternative to wood as it’s durable and easy to maintain. It’s also a great option for tight budgets. Laminate can be used in bathrooms as long as you choose a type that’s fully waterproof. Try the range at B&Q – ask in-store for advice as you need to buy the right underlay.

PARQUET FLOORING

Sophia’s choice...

A PARQUET STYLE FLOOR Timeless, beautiful and practical, parquet flooring, real or faux, always adds wow

The real thing Parquet used to be made from solid wood, but now there are engineered designs too. Engineered parquet floors are made from layers of processed wood with hardwood on top, whereas solid-wood designs are made from solid pieces of timber, which offer greater durability. Choose from harder woods such as oak, maple or walnut, while softwood parquet is made from materials like solid pine.

Choose your finish For an industrial-style look, raw or distressed parquet will work well. For a more traditional feel, a polished design that has a shine to it will fit the bill.

BEST FOR… VINYL VIBES Carpetright stocks a wide range of faux parquet. A popular choice is parquet vinyl, which is easy to clean, water resistant, slip-safe and warm underfoot.

TOTAL BARGAINS Discount Flooring Depot offers an inexpensive parquet herringbone-effect laminate flooring in various shades of oak. Called the Signature Collection it starts at just £13.49sq m.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING If you want underfloor heating, porcelain wood-effect tiles are the way to go. While real wood may warp and dry out under constant heating and cooling, porcelain won’t. Try Porcelainsuperstore.co.uk

For the best results Laying parquet is best left to professionals, however, there are pre-assembled options that ‘click’ together, which are easier to fit.

Keep its good looks The best way to clean it is by vacuuming and using a damp mop. If you do need to give it a deeper clean, use a specialist wood floor detergent. It’s also recommended you revarnish every 10 years, to keep your parquet pristine.

REAL WOOD PARQUETS

Worth the cost

RUSTIC

Expect to pay around £20sq m for a prefinished engineered product, and around £40 to £50sq m for the materials, and a similar amount for labour (per sq m).

Bath engineered oak herringbone wood flooring, £59.94sq m, Havwoods Buy now with Ownable

Fall for fake Another option is to go for a laminate floor with a parquet effect. Laminate is a multi-layer synthetic flooring, which is fused together with a lamination process. The top two layers are made up of a photographic appliqué layer, topped with a clear protective layer. The benefits are that it’s more durable and resistant to dents and scratches and it’s also easier to install. Alternatively, there are lots of ceramic tiles available that look just like the real thing despite the fact they are porcelain. Go with this option and you’ll have a flooring with a good durable finish – plus, many designs are suitable for outdoor use, too, so you can take your look from indoors onto a patio.

First, make the apple sauce. Peel, core and thinly slice the Bramley apples and place in a pan with the lemon juice and cinnamon. Cover and

Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until thick and pale. Gradually add the eggs, beating until thoroughly mixed. Sift over the flour, baking powder and cinnamon, add the almonds and fold together. Measure 250g of the cooled apple sauce and fold through. Spoon the mixture into a 20cm springform buttered and

base-lined cake tin. You can freeze any leftover apple sauce for later use. Quarter and core the Braeburn apples and slice each quarter into three. Arrange the apples in a circle on the batter. Bake for 35-40min, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If the top of the cake is browning too quickly, cover with foil for the last 10min of baking. GIVE SURFACES THE ONCE-OVER Arm yourself with two soft microfibre cloths. Spray one with antibacterial cleaner, wiping over door handles and smeary light switches, followed by stair finials and hand rails. Use the dry cloth to buff mirrors, picture glass, shelf and table surfaces. Then give wooden or tiled floors a once-over with a damp mop.

TACKLE THE FRONT DOOR Once you’ve wiped the inside of the door, move outside. Give the step and porch a thorough sweeping to remove surface dirt, then wipe the door clean with your cloth and spray, rinsing it out a couple of times if the door is particularly dirty. Use glass cleaner on glass panels and windows, buffing afterwards with a dry cloth. Apply the sealant in one smooth movement

Replacing bath sealant is a quick, cheap job you can do yourself

Angle the sealant so that water will run off it better

How to re-seal

YOUR BATHTUB

I

f the sealant around your bath is looking a bit worse for wear, it’s easier to sort out than you might think. You don’t need to shell out for a professional to do it – this is a DIY job that’s worth taking on yourself. Invest in some sealant remover, sealant and a cartridge gun, and do it yourself in an afternoon. WHAT YOU’LL NEED Silicone sealant remover Plastic scraper Silicone sealant Sealant gun White spirit

1

APPLY SEALANT REMOVER (try UniBond Silicone Sealant Remover, £7.98 for 150ml, B&Q) to the old sealant around the bath and leave it to dry for 10-15 min. Remove the sealant with a plastic scraper (be gentle so as not to damage the bath). Scrub the area using bathroom cleaner and leave it to dry thoroughly.

cut the nozzle off the end of the cartridge so that its size corresponds with the gap to be filled (it’s best to start small and then you can cut further down for a wider hole if you need it). Perch yourself on the edge of the bath, press the trigger and apply the sealant to the gap in one smooth movement. Take care not to overfill.

2

3

FILL THE BATH WITH WATER (the weight of the water will ensure that the sealant won’t crack when the bath is used later). Insert the sealant cartridge into your sealant gun and

ENSURE A CLEAN, STRAIGHT LINE BY MASKING OFF THE AREA ABOVE AND BELOW WHERE THE SILICONE WILL GO WITH TAPE 104 | NOVEMBER 2018

ONCE YOU’VE FINISHED APPLYING THE SEALANT it’s time to smooth it with a wet round-ended tool (try the handle of a wooden spoon) or wet fingertip. Shape the sealant at an angle, so that the water will run off it better.

4

REMOVE ANY EXCESS SEALANT WITH WHITE SPIRIT before it dries. Leave the sealant to dry according to the instructions on the cartridge, and then you can empty the bath.

How to get the best from

YOUR BOILER

All set for hibernation season? Make sure you tick getting your boiler prepped and ready off your list

A

re you prepared for the cold snap? This is the time to make sure your central heating system is in tip-top condition, so that your home can stay nice and cosy during the colder months.

CDI Compact gas-fired combi boiler, around £2,500, Worcester Bosch

Q

If our central heating stops working, can we try to fix it ourselves without having to call an engineer out? Absolutely, but don’t try anything beyond these basic checks. First up, if you’re on a repayment meter, check your credit, turn on any gas appliances to check for a flame, and see if a fuse has tripped. Power cuts can reset timers, so you may need to reprogramme it; once you’ve done that, turn the thermostat up past 21˚C, which can force the boiler into action. Checking and topping up your boiler’s pressure is simple – search ‘British Gas: how to check water pressure’ on YouTube. Finally, press your boiler’s Reset button, because sometimes turning it off and on again really is the answer!

Q

Q

Our boiler cuts out when it’s freezing – is that a fault? Below-zero temperature weather can cause condensate pipes (found on modern condensing boilers) to freeze, which can stop the boiler from working. Frozen pipes are a common call-out for boiler engineers in the winter. Simply defrost the pipe by pouring some warm (but not boiling) water over it.

Q

We’ve got an A-rated boiler and we never have the heating turned up over 20°C, but our bill

106 | NOVEMBER 2018

is still high. Any tips on how we can save costs and energy? Boilers account for up to 55-60% of our annual energy bills, so you’ve already done the hard part by getting a highefficiency boiler installed, which can cut up to £570 a year, compared to an older model. Installing a programmable thermostat (from £35, Screwfix) and thermostatic radiator valves to each radiator can also slash £150* from your bill by letting you control when and where

the heating is used. But remember, your home needs to be properly insulated.

Q

Is it worth installing a smart thermostat in my home? Flashy new thermostats like those made by Nest and Hive will give you more control over your heating via a smartphone, and can track your gas usage. The leading brands also promise quite impressive savings – but remember, these savings are not guaranteed.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING (CAUSED BY A FAULTY BOILER)– KEEP AN ALARM BY THE BOILER AT ALL TIMES

FEATURE TI-MEDIACONTENT.COM *ENERGY SAVING TRUST

Are annual boiler services really essential to have? A yearly service by a Gas Safe Registered (gassaferegister.co.uk) engineer is just good common sense and costs around £60-£100. The engineer should check the flue (both inside and outside the house), operating pressure and heat output and all seals. They should also do a full safety check and clean parts if necessary, plus provide a signed service report.

BLOODY MARY HOT DOGS TAKES 30MIN SERVES 4 3 onions, 12 cocktail sausages 1 chopped and 2 sliced 2tsp olive oil 200g passata 1tsp smoky spiced hot sauce Generous pinch of celery salt 2tbsp tomato ketchup 3tbsp vodka (optional) 200ml vegetable oil 5tbsp plain flour 6 hot dog rolls

1

Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Cook the sausages for 10-15min, turning occasionally, until they’re golden brown. Meanwhile, make the Bloody Mary sauce. Fry the chopped onion in the oil for 5min to soften. Add the passata, hot sauce, celery salt, tomato ketchup and vodka, if using. Simmer for 10min. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan. Meanwhile, coat the sliced onions in the flour. Gently put 1 onion ring in the hot oil – if it floats to the top, bubbles and cooks in 15sec, then the oil is at the right temperature. Cook the onion rings in batches until golden. Use kitchen paper to pat any excess oil from the onion rings and then set aside to keep warm. Slice the rolls, spread over a little of the Bloody Mary sauce and fill with the sausages and crispy onions. Use cocktail sticks to secure the hot dogs and serve with shot glasses full of the leftover sauce on the side, for dipping.

Using a sugar thermometer, boil until crack stage (156°C) is reached – this won’t take long. THE WOOD BURNING STOVE PERFECTED

FURNITURE’S BEST-KEPT SECRET

Clearview Stoves has been manufacturing exceptional wood burning stoves since 1987. These highly efficient stoves are a joy to use with excellent controllability and an outstanding view of the fire behind large, crystal clear glass. They produce five times more heat from the same fuel as an open fire, burn for long periods unattended and are so efficient that they are approved for smokeless zones. Their dancing flames and natural warmth are so special you will even find yourself looking forward to winter.

Renowned furniture outlet Trade Secret buys and sells cancelled orders, end of line and returns from the most respected high street stores and dot.com brands, including John Lewis, at bargain prices. Three massive warehouses in Oxfordshire, Cheshire and the newly opened Coventry warehouse, Warwickshire, have everything from dining sets to sofas. Stock changes constantly and what’s on the floor is available for immediate collection or delivery. It’s definitely worth a look.
