The Stripe Hype From reshaping a room to directing focus, stripes have a powerful effect in interior design. Here’s how to apply striking linear patterns throughout your home TEXT BY ELEANOR JOSLIN

25

Show your stripes

AWARD WINNER

Feel floored While a bold rug is an obvious choice for the floor, why not be more adventurous by painting wooden boards or a cement screed with wide stripes or a chevron pattern in two distinct tones. Add small accents like cushions and vases in a similar aesthetic to tie the look together. Slim lines Wearing clothes with vertical stripes is said to having a slimming effect and the same rule applies to interiors. If your home has low ceilings, vertical stripes on curtains or wallpaper can accentuate the sense of height – and the thinner the stripe the more potent the effect will be. But don’t go overboard, as too many vertical lines can make you feel confined. Visual illusions Similarly, horizontal stripes and lines draw the eye outwards and can appear to open up a small space. Stripes laid diagonally over floor coverings or accessories suggest movement and is a simple way to invigorate a room with energy. The zig-zag stripe of a chevron pattern in multiple lines can create a sense of drama and makes for a confident design statement. Be careful, as too much in one room could lead to creating a sense of chaos.

Style

redeďŹ ned The beautiful family home of Emirati Nawal Farah is a clever showcase of eclectic styles, where traditional and contemporary pieces mix harmoniously, bold statements give way to classic elegance, and home comforts meet Hamptons chic

HOME | local

PROFILE THE OWNER Emirati Nawal Farah and her two children Layla and Ali Al Alamy, aged 15 and 11, moved to this spacious villa in Golf Gardens, Abu Dhabi, four years ago. They have two dogs, Prince, a Yorkshire terrier, and Mars, a pug. THE HOME Nawal extended the front of the property and added a conservatory at the back, providing adding living space. The home features a formal living room with a reading nook, a separate dining room, an informal dining area and TV room, a conservatory lounge, four bedrooms upstairs, and a garden with a swimming pool.

T

he home of Emirati family Nawal Farah and her two children, Layla and Ali, is an eclectic mix of styles, with each room cleverly decorated to offer a distinct scheme that fits the mood and purpose of the space. Nawal, who has an events background, is passionate about interior design and has studied design masterclasses at the London studio of MBE Kelly Hoppen. While there are some clear nods to the South African interior designer’s signature styles, Nawal has put her own stamp on her family home, especially when it came to upgrading the property. A somewhat novel idea for a Middle East home, her conservatory extension from UK-based suppliers Swift Rooms not only adds ample extra space but offers a scenic lounge area with an al fresco ambience, with direct views of the garden and swimming pool, which her family can enjoy all year round. ‘I love the garden and being surrounded by greenery, however the UAE climate doesn’t allow us to be outside all year round,’ says the Abu-Dhabi-born mum of two. ‘Not only does the conservatory 32

boost the property, but we love the indoor-outdoor feel of it, being surrounded by plants and with the doors opening onto the garden.’ The family use this space more than any other room in the house, enjoying the relaxed, Hamptons-inspired look created by the accents of turquoise, linen and rattan. The elegant furnishings are offset by cement floor tiles giving the look a contemporary twist. It’s an eclectic combination that works well within the light, fresh space of the conservatory, with the bright blue sky coming in through the glass ceiling and a tropical ambience created from the lush plants. ‘I had a clear vision of how I wanted this room to look,’ says Nawal. ‘I wanted a typical Hamptons-style, fresh and clean feel – and I think I’ve done well creating this. I added the cement tiles because I like the industrial look and while it’s an unusual pairing the two styles work effectively together. ‘I like to mix and match but it’s not easy to blend modern with traditional. Kelly Hoppen does this effortlessly, and I’ve used her advice and style ideas throughout my home.’

Clockwise from opposite The informal dining area is furnished with mix-and-match pieces from Blanc D’Ivoire, from Dubai’s Galeries Lafayette, and a contemporary pendant from OSO. The formal living room sets a sophisticated scene, with luxurious Pizolli sofas and sleek tables from Roche Bobois, plus one of Nawal’s favourite items, a display cabinet from Cairo. An extension was added to the left of the living room, creating this reading nook that’s furnished confidently with a bold zebra rug from Zara Home, and wingback chairs from Nakkash Gallery around a nest of tables from 2XL Furniture and Home Decor.

33

‘I like a contemporary, steamlined and clean-cut look and I love neutral palettes with a subtle pop of colour.’

Clockwise from top left Decorative pomegranates bring good luck and add an accent colour to the formal living room. This contemporary chandelier hangs by a small mezzanine area on the landing, above the entrance. In the reading nook, these beautiful gold bowls from Spain complement the striking spider-leg framework of a side table from Nakkash Gallery. This cluster of mounted animal heads shows off Nawal’s playful side and her eye for fashionable micro trends.

34

HOME | local

Left Kelly Hoppen’s influence can be seen in the foyer, where Nawal has inlaid a black and white marble “rug” into the wood flooring from Floorworld; the framed sufi art is by Rana Chalabi. Below In the formal dining room a round OSO table picks up the dark red of the pomegranates in the neighbouring room, while the Roche Bobois corner cabinet is at a jaunty angle, breaking up the boxy feel of the room; the paintings are by Egyptian artist Farghali Abdel Hafiz.

At the front of the house she’s fashioned an entrance foyer to one side of the formal living room, at the foot of the staircase. The way she’s designed this area is recognisably inspired by the renowned interior designer, with a black and white marble “rug” inlaid into the wood floor and a round occasional table set with chic decorative items, candles and floral displays. The formal living room is furnished with high-quality pieces from Pizolli and Roche Bobois and a glass Art Deco vitrine from Egypt where she displays sentimental and precious pieces. Accents of pomegranate red stand out against a neutral base palette of taupe and pale grey. This accent colour – along with the blonde wood floor, dark furniture and light-coloured upholstery – is carried through to the dining room, lending an air of cohesiveness throughout these more formally furnished rooms. While she chose this villa for its size and location near her family, who also live in Golf Gardens, the front room felt boxed in so she extended the property into the front garden which made way for a

cosy reading nook off the living room. With a new façade featuring three large windows, both spaces are filled with natural light and have a fresh, relaxed ambience. ‘I wanted the extension to create a spacious living room with character and dimension,’ she explains. ‘I like a contemporary, streamlined and clean-cut look and I love neutral palettes with a subtle pop of colour – like the pomegranates for good luck. They’re from Turkey, and wherever I travel to I like to bring home little elements or artwork to include into the décor.’ Upstairs, the master suite and her kids’ bedrooms are decorated in distinct styles that match their personalities. Ali’s room sports a pre-teen “all American” vibe in red, white and blue and a basketball hoop on the wall, while Layla’s room features a mature teen palette in fashionable shades of grey and millennial pink. A zebra-print rug and a fluffy faux-sheepskin stool from West Elm are fun accents. ‘I love Pottery Barn for the kids’ furniture as it doesn’t date and the neutral base is easy to work with if we want to update the 35

bedding, the rugs and the colour of the walls as they get older or if they want a change – my kids direct that!’ laughs Nawal. Her own bedroom scheme changes now and then to suit the seasons or her preferences, she says. Recently, she’s reupholstered her bedframe from THE One in a creamy linen to create a soft, romantic look, complemented by a tufted bench and armchair in a creamy linen and a small footstool in a pale zebra pattern, plus pink and white Frette bedding. The feminine tone and classic silhouettes create a serene French-chic scheme, which Nawal admits she’s grown to love as she’s got older. ‘I like to change things up if I’m bored with a style and have a new vision,’ she adds. ‘For my bedroom I was in the mood for fresh pastels and a feminine feel. But if I want a brighter look I’ll change it to something summery, perhaps with coral accents. By having a neutral base you can make changes quite easily. My top tip is to have an accent chair in each room, which I can reupholster to ground a new scheme.’

Clockwise from below Layla’s bedroom has a fashionable teenage scheme of millennial pink and grey. The landing is a bold welcome to the first floor, with a reupholstered Ethan Allen chair and bright stools from Home Centre. Nawal has updated her bedroom with fresh fabrics, including the tufted linen headboard and the small footstool, now sporting a subtle zebra print.

Beachside bliss American country music star Luke Bryan teamed up with interior designer Chad James to create a beautiful coastal retreat in sunny Florida TEXT BY ELEANOR JOSLIN PHOTOGRAPHY ALYSSA ROSENHECK

W

hen acclaimed American country music singer Luke Bryan wanted a coastal getaway for his family situated along the shimmering sands of Florida’s beautiful Santa Rosa Beach, he called upon interior designer Chad James, whom he’d already commissioned to transform his rural estate in Nashville, Tennessee. Tasked with both projects, Chad could at once realize a chic beachside retreat and draw upon specific comforts that would give the bolt-hole a home-from-home feel. The Bryans’ permanent residence in Nashville is a sprawling estate of several hundred acres, with a main house, guest house, a party barn and a charitable petting zoo called Brett’s Barn, set up in memory of the Bryans’ infant niece who passed away last year. While Chad started updating the main residence in 2014, work on the holiday home in Florida started a year later and completed in 2016. ‘Only an hour flight away from Nashville, Santa Rosa Beach is an ideal location for the family to escape to when life is at its craziest,’ says Chad, founder of Chad James Group, 39

PROFILE THE DESIGNER Chad James transformed a dated property in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, into a coastal-chic vacation home for Tennessee-based country music singer and songwriter Luke Bryan, his wife Caroline, and their children. THE HOME This four-storey holiday retreat includes an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, three bedrooms, and a top floor annexe with eight bunk beds, a lounge and a kitchenette.

an interior design and architectural consulting practice based in Nashville. The Bryans wanted their holiday home to overlook the ocean and to be large enough for their family of two boys, their adopted teenage nephew and his two older sisters, whose parents passed away tragically in separate incidents. The name of the property, Snowman, is a tribute to Luke’s brother-in-law, referencing an affectionate nickname he gained on the golfing green. ‘The house they bought had a very modern structure, think Miami Vice 1988 to 1990,’ says Chad. ‘It was boxy but it had great bones, and looked out over the beach, so the location was perfect.’ They called upon local architecture firm Geoff Chick & Associates to strip the property back to its shell and transform it into a picture-postcard beachside home. Large windows and wide verandas on each level provide scenic views, a fourth storey was factored in for extra bedroom space, and a new asymmetrical pitched roof added character and shade over the third floor balcony. ‘The roofline completely changed the architecture of the home, creating a Cape-Cod-meets-Florida look,’ says Chad. ‘We kept only the foundations and added new floors, walls, plumbing and electricity. You can hardly imagine how it was before.’ The basement level includes a garage and outdoor showers fitted to decorative surfboards, creating an eye-catching feature wall. The second storey has an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, furnished in sandy tones and soft linens, plus an en-suite guest bedroom with turquoise accents. The third level includes the master en-suite bedroom with a beautiful custom-made swing seat on a large wrap-around terrace, and a bedroom for Luke and Caroline’s young sons, designed with a blue and white maritime theme, with heavy beige drapes and studded furniture that add an adult touch. The top floor features bedrooms cleverly designed with built-in bunk beds affecting the look of a ship’s cabin. It’s far from childlike, though: painted white wooden boards on the ceiling and walls provide a crisp, clean background;

Above The kitchen is painted in a bespoke milky-white inspired by a glass fragment Chad found at the beach as a child; the bronze handles add warmth and the bar stool covers are a practical touch. Opposite The living room enjoys wonderful sea views and is furnished with Verellen sofas in sandy tones, a Geometry side table and white urns from Noir and a rustic dovetail elm coffee table from Club Cu, over which hangs a custom Eternity Chandelier by Paul Ferrante.

Clockwise from above Generous balconies were added to the Snowman, including this decked area off the master suite, furnished with crisp white furniture from Skyline Design. A turquoise beaded chandelier from Currey and Company adds a pop of colour to the beautifully serene master bathroom. This second storey guest bedroom features beige Pindler fabrics, a wooden Bernhardt dresser and a luxurious tufted bed in a deep teal from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

‘The interior décor was inspired by bringing the outdoors in, so the colour palette picks up the different shades you can see in the sea and the sky.’

custom curtains and bedding in dark blue and beige stripes form a mature palette, and industrial-style lighting are a contemporary accent. Across the corridor, heavy rustic wooden doors on an exposed metal rail slide open to reveal a lounge and kitchenette, decorated with bold stripes, ikat prints and octopus artwork, providing an independent living space with quirky elements. ‘I knew Luke and Caroline wanted something that was quite casual compared to their permanent home which is an estate – there is a degree of formality there,’ explains the interior designer. ‘They wanted somewhere they could come to regularly and totally relax. We furnished and designed all aspects with this in mind, and incorporated entertaining as they love sharing their time with friends and family at home. Being by the beach, it also needed to be indestructible with hardwearing materials, yet comfy and cosy like a beach cottage. The interior décor was very much inspired by bringing the outdoors in, so the colour palette picks up the different shades you can see in the sea and the sky, from the darkest blue on the horizon at night to oceanic turquoise. ‘The original house didn’t have a proper entrance – you entered through the garage, which was very obscure to me. So we created

an entryway and foyer with a beaded chandelier and a beautiful landscape painting hanging in front of the window. I love creating a build-up to a sensation – in this case the sensation of arriving, so there’s a wall of glass that you can look through to the ocean, and wherever possible we have tried to capture the beautiful beach views. I also like to bring in instances of the unexpected – such as covering the foyer window with artwork suspended over the drapery. In a home full of windows some of them won’t have a great view, and the artwork hung in this way, like a veil, is more interesting to look at than the neighbour’s pool.’ At first glance, the painting of a rural lane and an overcast sky seems at odds with the sunny, beach locale of the property, however this juxtaposition was entirely intentional. ‘The painting is of a Tennessee landscape, where the Bryans’ estate is, and the cowhide rug on the floor references the farm life there. Many of our clients have multiple properties and when they go to their second or third home I don’t want them to feel like they’re in a stranger’s house; the property needs to include hints of their main residence in some way so they can feel at home and relax.’ Chad drew upon the family’s background wherever possible. The wood flooring that features throughout the house was 43

salvaged from an old factory in Georgia where Luke grew up. By turning the reclaimed wood over, the unused side is like new and shows no wear and tear from factory life. The interior designer likes to work in his own influences, too. ‘In every project I do I secretly put something of myself in it,’ he says. ‘I am from Alabama and the countertop in the kitchen is made from Alabama white marble.’ A subtle reference from his childhood can be found in the colour of the kitchen units, painted a milky white inspired by a glass fragment he found when playing at the beach as a kid. ‘I have a photograph of that day, building sandcastles with my sister and mother; I don’t know what was so special about it but I still have that piece of glass I found, and the blue-white, milky colour of it inspired this custom paint shade in the kitchen. ‘Life is very much about the things we collect; our lives and homes are about acquiring these curiosities and elements that create our story, which is unique to us.’

Clockwise from left The porthole mirrors from Noir are perfect in this nauticalinspired bathroom. The top floor custom bunks – designed for adults and kids alike – continue the maritime theme with blue and beige striped bedding. Across the landing wooden doors slide open to reveal a lounge with a blue dhurrie ottoman and Moroccan pouf from Wisteria, a Crate & Barrel armchair and a Flexsteel sofa; the wall trim is painted in Sherwin-Williams, used throughout.

He studied fine art in London before launching a career in creative expression through photography, fashion and film, working in London, Los Angeles and Paris before coming to Cape Town. Adam’s work reflects the pairing of classic and progressive styles. THE HOME Eden villa is a five-bedroom, two-storey family home nestled on the slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa.

C

radled by nature, on the slopes of Table Mountain surrounded by expansive natural gardens, Eden Villa is a stunning, tactile family home designed by OKHA, a furniture and interior design outfit based in Cape Town. Led by designer and creative director Adam Court, the design of Eden Villa was a challenging interior project, in part, because of its mountainside location. The homeowners, who are directors of an international shipping company and parents to two teenagers, wanted a home that embraced the natural environment with a design that would be comfortable and welcoming for their family and friends, and an aesthetic that was uncomplicated, honest and elegant, creating an Edenic retreat at the centre of the city. More specifically, they were insistent on the interior finishes and design transmitting an organic, natural warmth and texture, with an accessible level of luxury and sophistication. As OKHA was involved in the project before building began, during the architectural design phase with Antonio Zaninovic 49

Clockwise from above The living room features an L-shaped Monk sofa, Monk Chaise, marble-topped Mosaic coffee tables and dark-stained timber and marbletopped Lean side table, all by OKHA. The master bedroom basks in natural light and has an OKHA Curator couch in grey, a Stix side table, a white She standing lamp, and a Stone #1 Rug to pad around on in a custom colour-way of baby blues and greys. A serene, natural material palette continues through to the bathroom where a Noble Grey marble vanity unit and white walls contrast with slatted oak timber panelling to create a rich, textured elegance.

architects Adam and his team were able to conceptualise the internal finishes and interior architecture and décor in line and in harmony with the architectural language, creating a unified aesthetic. The verdant surroundings informed the internal material finishes of natural oak floors, hammered granite tiles, pressed raw concrete and slatted timber ceilings; these finishes referencing the naturally occurring elements of the property’s terrain. Even the fireplace chimney stack is clad in granite stone excavated from the property itself, as are the exterior stone-clad walls. The clients also wanted internal and external spaces that opened the property up and linked all areas cohesively, while also offering more intimate spaces by being able to close off interconnecting zones. This was achieved by removing traditional doorways between inter-leading spaces and instead using massive sliding pocket doors that could disappear into wall recesses, 50

thereby opening up connecting zones, or conversely, creating smaller, private spaces. This dual functionality was applied to all the main ground floor areas, including the two teenage bedrooms, allowing the kids and their friends to inhabit a section of the house while the parents (and any social gatherings) can coexist and entertain adjacently. At other times, having all areas open and accessible creates a wonderfully unified family unit, both indoors and out. In the open dining area, wall-to-wall windows offer elevated panoramic views of the immediate park-like surroundings and urban horizon. OKHA designed many bespoke pieces throughout the dining room including the 10-seater dining table in American oak and waxed mild steel, featuring a tapered top with the widest point spanning the middle. This design allows for greater social interaction, due to the shape of the top, so diners can converse more easily across its length. Internal finishes contrast and

complement one another, such as the oak herringbone floor which references European classicism and lies in contrast with the raw granite stone cladding and the pressed concrete ceiling. The room is further accessorised by an oak dining console, a wallmounted Reflect Cubist mirror, a black Law and Disorder lamp and various ceramics, all designed by OKHA. Natural earth tones pervade the design, from the olive green Minotti chairs in the dining room to a pair of customised burntearth coloured Maxx armchairs in the expansive, airy lounge zone, where timber and marble-topped coffee tables are set by a muted rose-pink L-shaped Monk sofa and chaise. Pivoting the living and dining area, the glass encased fireplace, clad in roughhewn granite rock is an inviting focal point while a geometric Himalayan wool and silk Stone #1 Rug from the OKHA Stone Rug Collection adds a softness to the floor. The theme that runs throughout Adam’s work is the pairing of classic and progressive styles. He pushes the boundaries of shape and form through the use of explorative geometry. This is evident across the Eden villa project, turning natural objects into elegant and sophisticated objet d’art. 52

‘Luxury for luxury’s sake is no longer valid, integrity and sincerity should be the root of today’s concept of luxury.’

Fabulous al fresco This month is all about getting outdoors and what could be more enjoyable than entertaining family and friends in style? TEXT BY MAIREAD WALSH

DECORATING | al fresco

It’s finally time to enjoy life al fresco once again, so what could be sweeter than a lovely garden gathering? Channel your inner Martha Stewart and transform your outdoor living space – for a special event, a relaxed sunny afternoon or a balmy evening get-together – into an inspired entertaining success with these stylish decorating ideas.

Clockwise from opposite page The new Linen Colorist collection from Zara Home applies the elegance of linen with watercolour designs featuring delicate paisleys and vintage flowers with pink coral, lime and lavender tones that strike a fresh note. Danube Home embraces a bolder approach to natural motifs with large palm print cushions on the Ellora leather sofa set (Dh4,499). Paper lanterns hung at varying lengths cleverly uses otherwise empty space, and with a plethora of blooms in differentsized jugs and mismatched chairs, the lack of symmetry communicates a relaxed vibe.

Go organic To avoid competing with the natural beauty of the outdoors, try incorporating organic elements such as stained wood, cotton, and linen into your table settings. Balance these heavy or neutral-coloured pieces with greens from the yard, use oversized glass bowls and lanterns to elevate the space, and keep the look feeling fresh and inviting with floral sprigs. For evenings, lighting is key. Try white fairy lights to cast a subtle twinkle, while battery-operated flameless candles give a similar glow to traditional candles, with no fear of wind, fire or spilled wax.

Top tip

Looking for sustainable options? Today’s faux foliage alternatives can look authentic and are long-lasting; mix with pretty pots of fresh herbs that you can use to cook with later.

A jar of fresh foliage is an easy, rustic table-top accessory.

Bright & cheery Create a playful ambience with a lively scheme – it doesn’t matter if the colours and patterns clash! Bright tableware, napkins and runners look great, as does bunting and balloons. Bring bright cushions and throws outside to give seats and benches a pop of colour if necessary. A variety of patterns – chevrons, stripes, florals – will add to the festive atmosphere. From picnic to patio to full garden party mode, don’t be shy with colour; it always lifts people’s spirits.

Top tip

Set up colour-themed side tables with drinks or desserts to draw guests into corners and encourage mingling. If you’re expecting little ones, a great way to keep them occupied is a kids’ corner with games, or an arts and crafts table should also do the trick.

Waterfront fun Whether you are inviting guests poolside or beachside, the water is a top attraction so don’t over accessorise, but do be prepared. To ensure guests have some shade, a gazebo or canopy are stylish options that you can customise to your party theme, garden or the blue of the water. Place rugs on sand, grass or a deck for extra comfort. Throws on seats will add texture and act as cosy covers if the wind picks up on the shoreline in the evening.

Top tip

If your party is likely to continue once dusk falls, be prepared with lanterns, pillar candles and tea lights: these look lovely and not too fussy, even unlit during the day, and add delightful reections from the pool or when placed beside water features after dark.

7 KEY AUTUMN TRENDS Discover our pick of the most captivating interior schemes for autumn/winter inspired by a range of concepts, from changing seasons to catwalk fashions, Balearic beaches to retro revivals

Pierre Frey’s mesmerising Grand Canyon collection of wallpaper and fabrics tells a story of Native Americans living in harmony with their natural surroundings, from the Rockies to the Great Plains, and conversing with the spiritual world, creating an aesthetically eclectic tribute.

Navajo Celebrating the artisanal know-how and culture of Native American tribes, the Najavo trend features bold, hand-painted motifs, geometric patterns and atmospheric colours inspired by the earth, the desert sky – by day and starlight – and cacti hues. The majestic headdresses of tribal chiefs, with bright feathers and jewellery representing traits like courage, honour, pride and creative force, is significantly emblematic. For an edgy style look for rattlesnake-diamond patterns, spikey chevrons, arid ochre tones, and simplistic line drawings of people and animals. 63

Colour therapy As we live in an age of intense consumption, we require our homes – our sanctuaries – to encourage us to stop and take a breath. Applying certain colours can help create this element of “mindfulness” at home, especially the soft, warm colours of apricot, rose-beige and dusky pink plus the cool, refreshing shades of early morning blue and mint. A hangover from 2016 – remember Pantone’s Rose Quartz and Serenity, twin colours of the year – and the millennial pink craze, this palette is a calmer, more mature version designed to provide relief.

Right Look to Marco Polo at Sedar Global for wallpaper and fabrics in fashionable colourways like mint green, rose-beige and serene earthy tones. Below Add tasteful tassels to your home with this ArtDeco-style Nappa lamp from Oliver Bonas; aptly named, as nappa means tassel in Italian.

On the fringe Fringing found fame in the 1970s and once again it’s the trim that’s in. Since 2017 we’ve seen costume jewellery fringed with fun tassels swinging from earrings and necklaces. It’s yet to become mainstream in home fashion, but we’re starting to see flirty fringes and tassels on decorative accessories like cushions and swishing happily from lamp shades and mirrors.

Above Find country-chic inspiration at Interiors, including furniture made from rustic, untreated wood and covered in natural linen. Left Sanderson’s Alnwyn Logs wallpaper will create a pastoral – yet abstract – feature wall, which will work well in an urban home.

Country glamour As countries of cooler climes embrace dark berry tones, furs and chunky knits as autumn changes to winter, the shift in the Middle East is somewhat less dramatic, but we can still adopt a warmer, cosier interior scheme. Evoke a country farmhouse feel with

exposed brickwork (or a ceramic-effect equivalent), rustic woods in honey tones, and animal-hide rugs. Considering our coastal location and ambient weather, keep it fresh and light by mixing in the classic elegance of Hamptons-style furniture with a neutral palette of light linen and timber, and furniture with classic silhouettes. 65

Crittal style The slim, angular, grid-like look of a crittal-style doorway, screen or windowpane has an edgy, architected, fuss-free feel, which resonates strongly with the industrial trend, still popular in the Middle East’s commercial and residential design scene. Crittal-style partitions and screens can transform an open-plan space, allowing you to cleverly zone areas without compromising on light and space. The striking, minimalist look of crittal-style framework is highly contemporary and can work well with other design styles, such as Scandinavian and mid-century modern, and the shadows they cast in a light-filled space add extra depth and atmosphere.

Clockwise from left Note how the square pattern of this bedding set from H&M Home complements the grid-like framework of the crittal windows. This interior partition is a smart way to zone a space without confining its proportions or cutting off a natural light source. The graphic print of this wallpaper from ferm LIVING perfectly reflects the classic aesthetic of terrazzo.

Terrazzo revival We welcome another ‘70s comeback, the speckled aesthetic of terrazzo, remastered as a decorative pattern that goes beyond floor coverings. Wallpapers, fabrics, rugs and items like crockery and vases can be found sporting a terrazzo print, in bold, clashing colours, unusual monochrome compositions or with pretty, neutral flecks. Terrazzo originated in Italy over 500 years ago as a composite material made by mixing marble chippings with cement. In the 1970s terrazzo found fame as a popular material for flooring and now it’s experiencing a revival as we continue to seek sustainable production methods – just as they did in Italy all those centuries ago. These days terrazzo can also be made from glass and metal fragments as well as marble chips, providing an endless, versatile combination of colours.

Modern Ibiza Inject sun-kissed Ibiza flare into your interiors scheme with folksy prints, pom-pom trims and natural materials. Use a neutral backdrop of crisp white and pale sandy tones to highlight accents in a summery palette of soft blues, pinks, tan and rosebeige, which is tipped to be a prevalent colour in 2019. Channel your inner boho with the summer’s popular micro-trend macramé, with wall hangings and doorway curtains, accessorise with seagrass belly baskets, and don’t forget bamboo and rattan furniture – a rattan swing seat is a must.

The Boho Daze collection from White Moss will get you started with a cool, comfortable beach-chic look. The boutique’s Sierra cushions, inspired by the mountain ranges in America’s Far West, also carries a hint of Navajo.

The hotel’s lobby and accommodation have a similar design aesthetic, with a rich, creamy palette and Arabesque accents. F

or a real getaway on the doorstep, you can’t get much more secluded – and luxurious – than The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah Al Wadi Desert, a mesmerising mirage situated amidst the shimmering dunes of the UAE’s striking desertscape. Nestled within a beautiful 1,235-acre protected nature preserve, the resort features 101 luxurious private pool lodges, comprising of spacious villas with Bedouin-inspired architecture and beautiful tented yurt-style accommodation, designed by Dubai-based architect and interior designer Kristina Zanic. The design of the hotel and its villas is inspired by a trader’s journey along the historic caravan route of the Silk Road, with oryx, camels and gazelles roaming freely, tented villas, traditional

Arabesque design details, and the discrete luxuries one would expect of a five-star resort. Formerly a Banyan Tree hotel, The Ritz-Carlton took over the management of the resort in December 2016, renovating the villas and gardens and updating the dining venues. The arrival experience is something to savour, driving down a palm-tree-lined track with donkeys and camels grazing on either side, towards a newly-built stone wall where the hotel’s name is carved into a large boulder. The entrance is grand yet unobtrusive against the background of the nature reserve and the rolling dunes. A long, high-pillared walkway adorned with huge Moroccan-style sconces and lanterns in perfect symmetry lead to a beautifully furnished lobby with high windows and drapes, delicate Islamic patterns peppering fabrics and decorative side tables, and an ancient olive tree at its centre under a glass dome ceiling. Hop on a bicycle and take a scenic ride around the winding pathways and past desert fauna and turreted fortresses – the lookout towers from bygone days. The sand-coloured Al Rimal private pool villas offer a home-from-home feel (if you’re from the Middle East) that’s perfect for families, clustered in little cul-de-sacs creating a quiet, rural community ambience. If you want a true escape, soak up the luxurious feeling of solitude and privacy amid the vast desert in one of the hotel’s Al Khaimah tented pool villas. Beyond the private entrance and manicured front terrace a heavy wooden door opens onto a glass 69

Clockwise from above Turreted lookout towers and roaming oryx are the only things that come into the deserted view from the private tented pool villas, complete with an infinity pool and a daybed designed to match the interiors. The elevated deck of the Farmhouse restaurant enjoys a scenic outlook. front that looks out over a blue infinity pool and the wonderfully empty desert beyond. Draped with creamy-coloured curtains edged with Arabesque stitching in olive green, floor-to-ceiling windows feature on all sides and are topped by camouflaged canopies that peak and trough like the dunes. Neutral shades of sand, tan, dark wood and green create a serene, relaxing ambience. Moroccan lanterns hang overhead, Islamic motifs pattern the thick creamy rugs underfoot, and Arabesque details are woven into the fabrics and embossed into the furniture. There’s a sense of equestrianism, too, with tan leather upholstery and reign-style curtain tiebacks – a nod to the mode of transport vital to trading caravans on the Silk Road. The square bar in the spacious bedroom is custom-made to look like a luxurious leather travelling trunk, with strap handles on the sides as if one could flip it over and heave it away. On the other side of the tented villa the bathroom is exquisite, with a standalone tub framed by a large wood and tan leather mirror that reflects the scenic views outside, surrounding you with the quiet desert vista. Further on, the dressing room is elegantly designed within a round tented space, with heavy wooden armoires and floorstanding vanity units. At the far end, the toilet is hidden behind a marble and glass shower cubicle, so the refined ambience of the

bathroom and dressing room are not marred by such necessities. In the day, first-class spa treatments, archery, falconry or a canter around the grounds cater to every age and wont. Start the evening with a gentle stroll to the Farmhouse terrace for sundowners overlooking a tree-lined pond, where herons perch and oryx gather to drink. Inside, the venue has been transformed from a Thai restaurant to a chic farmhouse-inspired dining spot, in keeping with the natural, organic surroundings. The large, barn-like structure features thick wooden beams and A-frame rafters, patterned ceramic floor tiles, and mix-andmatch chairs in tan and teal leather around wooden dining tables. Antique country-kitchen items like butter churns and metal weighing scales, large vases of dried lavender, and a display wall of eclectic decorations, including vintage gramophones and mason jars, create a space full of interest and detail. While the Farmhouse has an Americanised rural-chic feel, the a la carte dining venue Kaheela Restaurant carries a similar aesthetic to the lobby and tented villas, drawing upon the UAE’s heritage and history. This hotel is culturally-rich in its design details and a wonderful desert escape for those living in the UAE. For those travelling from further afield, don’t let the drive from the airport put you off; it’s certainly worth the extra kilometres. l ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/uae/al-wadi-desert

Homestead, The Yard This new culinary escape offers a relaxed, homey environment serving up a menu inspired by Emirati, Persian and Indian cuisine TEXT BY MAIREAD WALSH

72

Clockwise from left The interiors have been styled to reflect the distinct character of each half of the outlet’s two-fold offering. While the bakery’s muted pastel tones create a casual setting, the restaurant mixes upholstered antiques with contemporary furnishings in a mélange of colours.

THE VENUE Another ambitious development from Meraas, the creator of Last Exit, City Walk and La Mer, The Yard is a new al fresco hangout in Al Khawaneej. The 350,000-square-foot development features a lake with two pedestrian bridges, a 550-metre shaded walking trail, landscaped picnic areas, an 18-metre-tall windmill, and plenty of street art murals. Inspired by the agrarian surroundings of Al Khawaneej, known as Dubai’s agricultural heartland, a highlight of The Yard is the Homestead Restaurant & Bakery, which takes both its culinary and design cues from the local environment and cultures. THE DESIGN With its warm and relaxed vibe, Homestead aims to create a home-away-fromhome experience. Its charming and creatively upcycled barn-like ambience seamlessly blends in with the surrounding rural hinterland. The restaurant’s al fresco design celebrates the use of natural light through its clear glass ceiling, and features both natural and faux foliage hanging in the dining area to create a breezy, earthy feel. The close to nature, inside-outside appeal is further enhanced by natural materials such as wooden floors, ceramic marble-style table tops with timber finishing, wicker pendant lighting and rope accents on pillars that roll out the rustic look. Earth tone

leathers and natural fibres also lend to the pastoral charm. A combination of upholstered antiques and contemporary accessories give it a shabby-chic look with a modern twist. Warm hues of brown and green pervade the restaurant, while the bakery area introduces some funkier elements such as the MARHABA light bulb sign and white-washed wood for a lighter colour palette. THE EXPERIENCE This home-grown concept really does have an authentic feel. From the attentive service to the fresh, traditional cuisines to choose from, the setting serves as a cosy backdrop inviting you to get comfortable and stay a while. And with a range of dishes inspired by Emirati, Indian and Persian cuisine with a local twist, it’s an invitation that is very appealing. Portions are healthy and flavourful, and organic and sustainably-sourced ingredients are used where possible. The menu also includes detox options. So, after you savour the lamb machbous, kebab Emirati, butter chicken or double-baked goats cheese and walnut soufflé, followed by a labneh saffron cheesecake, you can wash it down with a mango cardamom lassi, vegan choco banana shake or celery pineapple chia smoothie. Homestead also sells organic honey, tea and freshly baked bread. l homesteaddubai.com

A pergola not only has a strong visual impact on your garden design but it offers a number of functional purposes and sought-after shade. Here, Milestone Landscaping has created a dining area distinct to the cooking station by installing two pergolas in the same style yet set slightly apart.

GARDENS | xxxxxx

Landscaped design elements are meant to reflect and relate to your space as a whole, bringing the interiors and exteriors together in harmony. What’s even more important, however, is how you feel when you’re outside, in your garden, on the patio or terrace. Intelligent landscaping should be able to impact your senses – visually, aurally and kinaesthetically – in a way that influences how you use your outdoor space. These essential tips will help create a garden that will stimulate all your senses. 77

VISUAL LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS

. The brighter colours of plants, flowers and grass come alive

when the materials used for the façade of your property, paving, planter boxes and other features (such as furniture) are in more neutral colours, allowing the vibrant fauna to stand out. Levels play a significant role in any garden, creating different zones and influencing how you view these areas. Raised or sunken levels provide space for seating and entertainment areas, or a swimming pool. However, be aware that too many levels can hamper the flow of the garden. Elevated structures like a pergola or gazebo can have a big impact on a garden. Install them close enough to your house for easy access to the kitchen, which will be useful when you’re entertaining, yet not so close that the structure blocks your outlook when you’re inside the house. Alternatively, installing a pergola that’s attached to the house, extending above the windows at heights of 2.8 to 3.2 metres, can be a practical option as you won’t see the roof. Murraya jasmine makes a beautiful dense hedge up to two metres in height and can be trimmed. Planting this along pathway walls is a nice way to conceal tall boundary walls.

.

.

.

AUDITORY DESIGN FACTORS The sound of babbling water brings the beauty of nature into your home and can have a peaceful and relaxing effect. Having a water feature by the entrance to your home or garden, on a pathway or near al fresco seating and dining areas can add charm and atmosphere. If your villa is near a busy road the sound of traffic may be an unwanted noise. A water feature with spouts and bubblers can help to cut traffic noise. Wind chimes gently swaying in the breeze can create a pleasing sound. Feng Shui experts recommend using wind chimes if you want to enhance the energy around your garden. KINAESTHETIC MATERIALS Material selection is very important to get right, as it not only impacts your senses visually but also tactilely. If you walk around your garden barefoot, perhaps stepping out from a swimming pool or a Jacuzzi, having a therma-wood or composite wood flooring is nicer for your feet than stone or porcelain tiles which are harder and can be rougher. Porcelain tiles for pathways, stepping stones, patios and decking are easy to install and maintain as they are not affected by the heat and weather, like natural wood is. The look and feel of brushed travertine, flamed granite and sand-blasted limestone has a naturally rough surface, kind of pockmarked, and can be a tactile material to use on paving and walls, inviting touch which can aid directional flow around your outdoor space. These materials are suitable for landings, steps and risers as they are available in anti-slip surfaces, providing necessary safety. You’ll find 3cm-thick flamed granite and 2cm-thick porcelain can be used in driveways as they are non-slip and suitable for heavy, moving loads like cars. 78

ENHANCING OLFACTORY Our sense of smell can be heighted through the natural fragrances of plants and flowers. Plants that are wonderfully fragrant and grow well in the UAE climate include murraya paniculata or orange jasmine, jasmine sambac, jasmine creeper, quisqualis indica or rangoon creeper, plumeria trees, lemon trees, basil and rosemary. Growing your own herbs, fruits and vegetables not only makes the food you cook taste fresher and better, but these plants will add enticing, mouthwatering natural fragrances to your garden when you cook or eat outside.

Clockwise from right The natural sound of water helps create a relaxed atmosphere. Different types of paving stones can help zone areas; note the waves in the slabs that subtly aid direction towards the water feature, while the stacked-stone wall around the seating area acts as a tactile allure. The various levels of decking and staggered walls add visual interest and additional areas for lighting, creating an inviting ambience at night.

INIALA PHUKET, THAILAND

Dh73 million

Currently operated as a stunning resort hotel, this phenomenal design property is for sale as a residential estate. Founded by Mark Weingard, a banker turned philanthropist, Iniala was created from the concept of giving free rein to the imagination, innovation and inspiration of renowned designers. Working with the brief that each room should be ‘out of the ordinary’, 10 world-class designers – including the Campana Brothers of Brazil, A-Cero of Spain, Joseph Walsh of Ireland, Graham Lamb of Britain, Mark Brazier-Jones

of New Zealand and Thailand’s Eggarat Wongcharit – were given carte-blanche to create the villas. The result is a fascinating collection of unique design executions. From the Boudoir awash with silks, crystal and metal structures inspired by the tropical sun, to the Collector’s Villa featuring the “Living Room of the Sea” where the walls are encrusted with 3,000 ceramic plates inspired by the ceramic temple at Wat Arun, to the Lotus Flower suite which is adorned with dozens of bronze flowers on the walls and ceiling plus artwork in the bathroom depicting the movement of aquatic life, each villa reflects a distinct concept. l christiesrealestate.com

PLEASING PHUKET

Thailand’s largest island is home to lush rainforests and white sandy beaches, as well as rich cultural heritage, delectable cuisine and stunning worldclass spas and resorts that make it a fabulous spot to own property. n Beautiful beaches that ring the southern and western coast are the main attraction with popular diving spots home to the most colourful sea life. n Wildlife sanctuaries and national parks in the north end of the island offer more opportunities to appreciate the natural environment. n Traditional temples represent the country’s spiritual centre and some impressively intricate

architecture and design. n Regular festivals offer a colourful, cultural injection into everyday life, as well as the night markets and jubilant, world-famous nightlife scene.
