he Salone del Mobile showcases th the llatest t t and d greatest furniture designs in visually stunning ing displays, along with quality craftsmanship and innovations. This year didn’t disappoint with th its celebration of captivating and intricate decorative{details where retro designs took centre stage.. Circular shapes were all the rage, from sofas and chairss to lighting and coƪee tables — curvy is in! There was a deƬnite move towards softness and comfort, which introduced a feminine{and nine{and romantic charm. Low, puƪy, curved and plumped shapess referenced 1970s disco, while fringing{and velvet sofas evoked 1950s glamour. In a revival of 1970s style, shades of orange were, without out a doubt, the leading colours this year. Green was another dominant Gatsby chair. smania.it hue, from emerald and forest green to mint, sage and moss oss green. All shades were present in both indoor and outdoor furnishings. ishings. Grey tones, which have dominated our interiors for the past decade, were replaced by warmer hues of beige and chocolate colate brown. Bold pops of Ƭre engine red and royal blue were also on display, replacing the more minimal palette of previous seasons. After a strong comeback in 2017, marble was again a feature and it looks like it is here to stay for some time. White marble was hard to Ƭnd, with coloured exotic marbles and onyx stealing the show. Exotic timbers have come back with inlays and colours brought to life through resins, waxes and natural oils, which have been left to penetrate the timber without obscuring its knots and grain. This year’s Salone del Mobile has placed timber in a new light as artisans experiment with its forms, process{and use. This marks a new path for this age-old material with exciting new interpretations. Overall, the well-structured designs on show married comfort with quality and aesthetic appeal, with an unusual edge.

EUROCUCINA — THE FUTURE OF KITCHENS his biennial event, dedicated to kitchen design, exhibited the latest designs trends and developments in appliances and smart technology. Light and white kitchens are no longer in vogue — dark and moody colours are currently trending in kitchen design. Together with matt Ƭnishes and exciting accents, these designs have a reƬned urban Ʈair. Plenty of glass is coupled{with noble materials such as oak, chocolate{walnut and dark marble benchtops. Transparency and layering are used to open some shelving and storage {spaces while hiding others. Sliding tops cover sinks when not in use and gas hobs Ʈoat atop counters, free from the surrounding plates. Luxurious design features such as brass edges to cabinets and countertops accentuate modern simplicity and elegance. This year, the biggest trend was the hidden{component. With its close proximity and connection to the surrounding living areas, the kitchen’s greatest oƪering was its ability to hide or{camouƮage some of its basic functions. The result is an impeccably organised area paired
T Artematica Kitchen, logica storage system. valcucine.com
with{open shelving displays (in the manner of bookcases) that{blur the line between kitchen and{living space. Benchtops were elongated to allow space for accessories and additional elements such as cutting boards and metal grills. Splashbacks were replaced with hidden shallow storage solutions where doors move upwards or slide across to reveal a workspace. These work areas were combined with new functions and high-tech accessories, such as USB sockets and shelves for iPads or tablets to be used near cooking spaces. Strong use of LED lighting to illuminate splashbacks and chromo-therapy{contributed to{the{overall atmosphere. Display cabinets with{clear or smoked glass doors oƪered the perfect{space for LED lighting to highlight beautiful{objet d’art. Smart appliances save time and energy thanks to the integration of Wi-Fi technology. Through the use of remote devices, a dialogue between man and machine is created, allowing the control and activation of kitchen appliances from wherever you are. Integration also seems to be the key word.

SALONE DEL BAGNO — LIVING BATHROOM he newest of the exhibitions, focused on bathroom design, is also{ a biennial event alongside EuroCucina. The event transformed the bathroom from a space of utility to a room with a compelling identity; a smooth continuation of interior living. The move towards colour continues in the bathroom, not only through tiles, but also basins and toilets. Organic-shaped design elements emphasise the value of natural materials with new treated timber Ƭnishes, stainless steel and stone. Innovative solutions for integrated storage units and shelving systems bring new functionality. One of the standout design features was the freestanding washbasin. Whether carved from solid pieces of marble, or crafted using a variety of sculptural and textural techniques, the natural soft and rounded designs were teamed with cabinetry, creating a furniture piece worthy of any living space. Transparent resins, in several chromatic options, made their way into this year’s{bathroom designs and are likely to be a feature for years to come. Washbasins and freestanding baths were still the leading statements, giving modern bathrooms an air of openness and elegance. In the realm of tapware, there was an increasing dominance of metal Ƭnishes that have moved on from chrome, hinting at the warm tones of brass. It’s a classic look that won’t go out of fashion as rose gold has. Other popular Ƭnishes were aged brass, bronze, nickel, copper and the silky eƪects of burnishing. Coloured taps have recently enjoyed a revival, particularly in black and white, but also in loud primary colours that haven’t been seen since the mid-1970s. There has been a move away from traditional high-gloss Ƭnishes. Ceramic 3D printing, porcelain stoneware coverings and carved marble tiles oƪer textured and patterned surfaces. Wallpaper has also made its way into the bathroom with wet system wallpapers conquering the absolute dominance of tiles. EMILY WILLS Emily Wills describes herself as a “warm, curiouscweirdo” and it is just those quirks that have shaped her impressive design career Words Alice GriƯn
E
mily Wills wears many hats. She’s a fashion designer, illustrator, curator, arts educator and printed textile designer. She’s also the founder and director of SURFACE 1°22, a creative enterprise that has a proverbial Ƭnger in many pies. From their studio in Melbourne’s south-east, the team creates pattern designs for leading fashion and homeware brands. SURFACE 1°22 also designs{and sells its own products — which can be anything from cards to upholstered retro ’70s chairs. Everything the SURFACE 1°22 team does is high energy and their designs are instantly recognisable by their bold colouring, graphic prints and geometric patterns. “Being a texta-loving kid from the ’80s, my favourite mediums are Sharpie and Copic markers,” Emily says. “So my design style ends up looking quite raw, scratchy and textured,” she adds. Hers is an aesthetic that people respond to. SURFACE 1°22’s print designs have featured in swim, resort and active wear collections around the world. Back in Australia, a collaboration with
44
home design
popular sustainable lighting designer, Ode to Elma, is underway. For Emily, success internationally doesn’t feel outlandish; it feels right. After all, SURFACE 1°22 was born on foreign soil. “Our business began in Singapore as a design collective of like-minded souls,” Emily reveals. “Fine artists, interior designers, fashion designers, textile creatives and craft enthusiasts shared ideas about the role of 2D and 3D fabric manipulation in contemporary design.” Together — and with support from LASALLE College of the Arts and the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore — the collective worked on projects and exhibitions that explored surface design. While the enterprise is now Ƭnding its way on a new island, the business owes its name — 1°22 is Singapore’s geographic coordinates — and its colourful, bold aesthetic to those early days. The problem with creating popular designs is the tendency to get pigeonholed. While Emily loves her work, she’s not interested in simply making more of the same. But designing something diƪerent isn’t always commercially viable; sometimes it takes, and sometimes it doesn’t. “One of my favourite collections,
Cutting Shapes, was a Ʈop,” Emily recalls. “It was a little too directional for my customers, but I loved the acidic colour palette of purple and lime.” Reworking past designs also doesn’t hold any appeal for Emily. “I love being a designer and looking at what is old is new again — but never in the same ways,” Emily says. “It’s important for designers to look beyond trends and source original inspiration that will translate into creative{outcomes.” This passion prompted Emily to look outside her own business and begin educating. Today the designer juggles projects at SURFACE 1°22 with her role as sessional lecturer in the BA Textile{Design Course at RMIT University. She also{Ƭnds time to run short courses and workshops{for budding creatives at SURFACE 1°22’s headquarters. In Emily’s opinion, design should be for everyone and there’s no right or wrong way to be involved — she herself is the perfect example. “I love pushing back against trends. I walk my own path with the knowledge that others also enjoy the beat of my drum.” HD surface122.com

JACKSON WELLS Driven by his empathetic and pragmatic nature, furniture designer Jackson Wells creates meaningful products and environments for a better world Words Alexandra Longstaƪ
F
or Jackson Wells, furniture design is much more than just a pay cheque . For the young business owner and creative, crafting his products is emotional. “Designing for me isn’t just a job or a hobby,” Jackson explains. “It’s a passion, an obsession even.” The young designer realised at a young age that he loves the process of crafting objects with his hands. He also says he quickly became aware of the impact his crafts could have on the lives of others. Take lighting for example. Jackson says this form of design might seem insigniƬcant, but it can greatly aƪect a person’s emotional state. He adds that designing inclusive environments is something that also brings him great joy. Jackson’s portfolio includes a project called Homebase, a play area in a primary school geared speciƬcally to the needs of some of the students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. This project holds a special place in Jackson’s heart. “To see children with neurological challenges playing happily alongside neurotypical kids is extremely humbling,” he says.
46
home design
His portfolio of products could best be described as minimalist, however Jackson errs on the side of caution when it comes to aligning himself with fads. “I’m not interested in trends, nor do I associate myself with any one ‘style’. But I guess if I had to, I would describe my ‘style’ as having minimalist tendencies but without the geometric restrictions people often associate with minimalism. To make a curved object Ƭt elegantly in a rectilinear world is extremely challenging, but it’s a challenge that I keep seeking out.” Jackson’s degree in environmental design was hands-on, so while he graduated only late last year, he has, in a very short amount of time, managed to develop a strong portfolio as well as launch his own business — self-titled Jackson Wells. His degree has also given him a refreshing outlook on sustainable design. “I am astounded that sustainability is still such a hot topic in 2018,” he muses. “It should just be an expected component of every project.” The young designer weaves this mentality into his own designs, explaining that he is “always trying to achieve maximum emotional impact
with minimal material usage”. He does this by considering the lifespan of a product and choosing to bin society’s throwaway culture. “I believe products should be made to last a long time or, at the very least, be recyclable at the end of their lifespan.” Admirably, he lives and designs by the mantra that failure is okay, and chooses to see the process of failure as an important learning curve. He explains that while “the moment of failure is never pleasant, if the lessons of failure are met positively then it will ultimately lead to bigger and better things”. Jackson’s approach to his work is evidently diverse, so what does this mean for his future? He wants to align himself closer to the health industry and would like to contribute to creating positive environments for health care and, therefore, all people. He adds that while in the past he has been naturally drawn to the warmth and versatility of timber, he doesn’t shy away from the idea of branching out into colour. Watch this space for pastels in his upcoming designs; he tells Home Design he is a big fan. HD jacksonwells.website

alling into art is how Joshua Webb{describes the beginning of{his career. He chose to follow{his{passions indiscriminately, becoming more of an inventor{and{designer and creating the{“impossible”. To pursue his passion, Joshua studied a bachelor of visual art at Curtin University, followed by a master degree in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, USA. From there, he did a postgraduate program at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in the US and a number of art residencies in Prague, Switzerland and New York. After achieving many scholarships, grants and{working a selection of part-time jobs,{Joshua found a way to create as well as earn a living when he was picked up by

Galerie Düsseldorf and secured a position within a boutique engineering Ƭrm. “The commercial gallery was a platform to expand my creative practice professionally and the design job was a way to pay for that expansion,” says Joshua. By working as an industrial designer, Joshua felt{grounded. He was able to let go a little and realise that collaboration is key to building extraordinary things. To this day, he doesn’t regard himself as an artist. He says he may have been one in his 20s but after spending more than{a decade examining the relationships between aesthetics, language and meaning, he’s now a little uncomfortable with the term. “In the past, I have incorporated market trends{within my practice, but these days{I’m{happy to just do my own thing,” says{Joshua.
Describing his work as conceptual formalism, he employs a combination of digital technologies and traditional building techniques to allow himself to push the limitations of the physical world. He enjoys taking a concept, something he says shouldn’t exist, and pushing it into existence against all odds. His most popular work — BLUE SUN — is a 3m-diameter glowing blue loop that cantilevers{outwards from the Alex Hotel in Perth. It is described as “abstract science Ƭction made real, but still just beyond our reach”. “I like the idea that I’m drunk on optimism and that I pursue art and life as a modernist —my heart is open to the world,” says Joshua. “I know that I am also a skeptic, that objective analysis runs deep and that the cool eyes of my personal history guide my decisions.” HD jlwstudio.com

I spend most nights liaising with diƪerent people all over the world in the search for new and exciting products. We do a lot of in-house design now, and that is pivotal to us having unique items that you will not Ƭnd anywhere else in Australia.” The brand’s vibrant rug ranges are increasingly attracting praise and are designed by Lucy’s husband Josh. From patterns to more
minimal designs, there really is something for everyone. “It has become a real passion for Josh,” says Lucy. “He is literally obsessed with designing rugs. They are such an important part of any space and our rugs make a big impact. Our clients just love them.” fenton&fenton is a true success story, giving others the inspiration and courage to go out there and create their own business. “Do something you love and are passionate about and you will be rewarded,” says Lucy. “But also be prepared to work far harder than you ever thought possible. ake one look at this home and you would think that you’ve landed in a diƪerent dimension. With its bold facade and private entrance, this modern marvel has changed the way houses are traditionally designed and constructed. The owners of this beachside suburban home made a sea change from Sydney to enjoy all the Sunshine Coast has to oƪer. With their children now adults, they were looking to downsize, but not compromise. They hired Aboda Design Group to turn their dream into reality. “[Our inspiration was] a mid-century, modern design coupled with an informal, beachside aesthetic for both the interaction with the street and the internal living arrangement,” says Lee Foster from Aboda Design Group. “We wanted dramatic, generous spaces, but not too large or dominating to the relatively low-scale street.” As the plot was initially vacant land adjoining existing

houses, Aboda, along with builder Ian Callaghan from Fauna Homes, was able to construct a threebedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home to suit the couple’s needs. Lee and her team capitalised on the land’s rear northern orientation by designing the home to have maximum natural and cross-Ʈow ventilation as well as Ʈooding it with natural light to reduce the use of artiƬcial cooling or lighting. “The home achieved a very strong design form within a typical suburban setting, directing points of focus, rather than to external outlooks or views,” says Lee. “EƯcient planning achieved a high level of inclusions with generous space located all on one level.” A mix of modern design and casual living is echoed throughout the home, from the eastern-facing, fullglass main entrance to the clever contrast of the warm timber Ʈoors and the low-maintenance, oƪ-form concrete walls.

This was used rather than constructing tall block fences, which did not suit the surrounding environment. As the site is potentially Ʈood prone, the height of the building was raised and the front garden was blended into the road reserve below. “My favourite part of this home’s design is the street facade of the raking garage, butt-jointed glass and cedar screen and landscape, combined with the point of entry directed privately along the side of the home,” says Lee. The elevated home creates a very cool living environment, which limits the use of artiƬcial cooling, and the breezes from the ocean naturally cool the pool and PV system. Another eco-conscious feature is the
drought-tolerant planting, both in the front garden and courtyard, minimising the need for watering. By placing their faith in the team at Aboda Design Group and Fauna Homes, along with their consultants, the owners were able to achieve their dream of moving away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney to the warmer climate and relaxed lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast. Their brief was not only met but exceeded, with the collaborative team delivering an award-winning, modern yet low-maintenance beach house with space for the couple’s children and overseas family to visit. “We are very grateful for the opportunity to deliver a striking home that the owners love in our home town,” says Lee. ownsizing doesn’t always mean moving into a tiny home, as this spacious terrace house in Sydney’s eastern suburbs proves, featuring plenty of room to entertain and accommodate family. Home to a retired couple from Sydney’s north shore, this cosy, three-bedroom property boasts large open-plan spaces and a separate hidden studio. The move was prompted by the owners’ desire to be closer to their three adult children and although this meant a downsize, they still wanted their home to include generous entertaining areas and a swimming pool. To create this dream terrace, the couple hired LGDesign to oversee the construction, design and interior layout of the home. “When the couple bought the property, there was an existing DA approval for a new terrace-style house; however, they did not feel that the approved design suited their lifestyle or desired vision for their new home. So [they decided] to redesign a new home that would speciƬcally cater to their requirements,” says Lisa Goddard, owner of LGDesign. The original freestanding brick residence was removed to allow Lisa and builder Leon Skovron to create a uniquely wide terrace (6–8m wide) that encompassed an open-plan living area on the ground Ʈoor, three bedrooms (two with ensuites), a study, threeand-a-half bathrooms and a laundry. In addition to this, they designed and constructed an art studio above the double garage with separate access to the street. “The design of the house provides an unexpectedly large,

To accommodate all generations of the family, the home features two seating areas — one formal space near the sleek, elongated dining area and one casual space at the front of the home, featuring a large handcrafted feature wall, which houses a double-sided Ƭreplace and large television. Made from a combination of Alpine loose stone walling and Howqua freeform walling by Eco Outdoor, the wall’s texture and earthiness provides warmth, perfect for entertaining on cold nights. Heading upstairs, the home opens up to two levels, with the staircase featuring a soft inlay of luxe Galet carpet by Cavalier Bremworth. The property’s natural textures and neutral palette extend to these levels, with each Ʈooded with outside light. “As you move through the home, warmth and detail are introduced through a raw palette of materials,” says Lisa. “This palette is a timeless canvas and it allows art, furniture and other sculptural objects of the client to shine as they provide boosts of colour throughout the home.” The sleek and central galley kitchen brings an air of modernity to the home, with its polished concrete benchtops, Wolf SubZero fridge and double oven and Zip HydroTap. tepping into this elegant and sophisticated home, you’ll be surprised to discover it is owned by a famous rap artist. Yet this crisp and modern four-bedroom residence in the heart of South Beach was lovingly developed by design studio Light on White for the French artist’s family to grow up in and enjoy. “As is often the case in the rapidly evolving Miami real estate market, the homeowner purchased the house as a concrete shell from the developer,” says Alizee Brion from Light on White. “The client approached us as he was seeking to bring European elegance to his family home while following the sleek lines of modern architecture.” As the homeowner shared the design studio’s appreciation for natural materials and clean lines, he gave them full responsibility over the home’s colour palette. Alizee chose quite masculine yet soft neutral tones to Ƭt with the growing family’s needs. “The use of materials in their raw form celebrates their natural beauty, imperfections and all,” says Alizee. “The result is an immersive sensory design with timeless appeal.” The 1370m² residence features an immersive layering of textures, from open-grain timber and high-gloss lacquer to soft furnishings and embroidered linens. Each room, although open plan, has a comfortable and warm feel achieved using soft Pianeta Legno Ʈoorboards and lowhanging pendants and table lamps from Design Source, One Kings Lane and Horchow.

With views looking out onto Miami Beach Golf Club, the home’s main living space was cleverly split in two to create one formal living area and one laid-back space for both entertaining and relaxing. However, the statement room of this home is certainly the master suite. Exuding understated luxury, this grand bedroom’s feature pieces include a swivel chaise lounge, upholstered in patterned velvet and styled with embossed leather cushions, and an oversized dressing room with custom LED-lit, Ʈoating glass shelves to display the homeowner’s impressive collection of sneakers. “One of the toughest issues we faced was detailing the Ʈoating glass shelves in the dressing room,” says Alizee. “We built out a timber veneer wall cladding that the shelves slot into, just deep enough to serve as a cantilever and to conceal the LED strips that diƪuse light through the glass. It was unlike any dressing room we had designed or even seen before, but the client had a clear idea of what he wanted, so we had to Ƭnd a solution.”

THE ORGANIC FREEFORMED STONE WALLING
remmo Homes’ latest display house began with a simple concept. “Our objective was to create a contemporary design with a relaxed feel,” says Richard Gremmo. “There are Ƭnishes and inclusions that you wouldn’t usually Ƭnd in a display home. We have more than 20 years of experience as a custom home builder, and we are well aware of the design concepts and inclusions that are both popular and also functional. We have worked hard to create an adaptable layout that can be easily adjusted to accommodate unique circumstances, such as narrow-width lots and sloping sites.” The home has a substantial street presence, accentuated by two advanced native Brachychiton ‘Bottle’ trees. Welcoming wideformed stairs provide a subtle transition from the footpath to the entry of the home, framed by a double-storey glazed vestibule. The facade of the home incorporates organic freeformed stone walling with hardwood timber cladding to juxtapose the smooth-rendered walls. Sleek commercial glazing lines combine harmoniously with an understated landscape design that addresses the slope of the site as well as the aesthetics. The home has a northerly aspect to its rear, providing a fantastic opportunity to capture abundant light. The integration of the pool design also supplements the amount of light the home harnesses and is the focus of the rear yard. Three outdoor living spaces provide a transition between the home and its gardens, and ensure the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. The central living room is the heart of the home. Guests can enjoy views of the sparkling adjacent pool and landscaped yards, the perfect space for relaxation with its Ƭreplace and bar. The Ƭreplace is framed with a stack-bond brickwork structure that serves as the structural centrepiece of the home. Infusions of timber and natural stone combine with subtle wall tones to add warmth to the open feel of the home, with an injection of colour provided through the inclusion of strategic decorating pieces. Custom upholstery and layering of textures and fabrics provide sophistication, while modern art and subtle lighting add ambience. A dedicated home theatre provides all of the luxury inclusions required to kick back and take it easy. Careful attention has been applied to the volume attenuation and acoustic treatment of the room to ensure the complete Hollywood experience is achieved. Guest accommodation and inter-generational living has also been catered for, with a downstairs bedroom that includes its own powder room. This space has the ability to function as a study or home oƯce, ensuring a number of lifestyle requirements have been considered. Along with architecture Ƭrm Jamin Design Group, Brendon and Andy King from King Builders have delivered a seamless abode that is able to eƪortlessly accommodate visiting family and friends. “The main brief for this property was to have a level block with all the living spaces on the ground Ʈoor, and the kitchen and living area opening up to the large family-size pool and landscaped grounds,” says Brendon. “As the clients are a young family, it was important to have separate living spaces throughout the home, plenty of storage and a design that understood today’s modern living. The couple also run a business from home so a separate oƯce needed to be included.” There was a meeting of minds between King Builders and the owners, and the project was completed with few hiccups. It features a generously proportioned outdoor area, kitchen, living and dining spaces, study, media room and three garages with a workshop, plus Ƭve bedrooms, three bathrooms and two powder rooms. “A special feature is the rooftop viewing deck that can be accessed internally,” says Brendon. “The deck boasts a 360-degree view of both the city and Mount Coot-tha and is the perfect spot to watch the Ƭreworks.” Though Ʈoors may not be the Ƭrst thing to garner our attention when we walk into a home, they’re crucial to cohesive, enviable interiors. The home incorporates engineered French oak Ʈooring that truly transforms the entire space. The kitchen also cooks up major style, spearheaded by Bart from AllƬt Cabinet Solutions. It features twopack shark-nose drawer Ƭnishes, laminated overhead cupboards and Caesarstone benchtops consisting of 50mm Calacatta, Organic White and Vanilla Noir{surfaces. Outdoor cladding comprises of a range of James Hardie products sourced from Mitre 10 Mega Beenleigh — these include rendered blue board and Matrix panelling and Linea weatherboard. The combination of all three provides the perfect modern Ƭnish to the property. The rooftop deck features a new James Hardie decking product, Hardie Deck, which was also sourced from Mitre 10 Mega Beenleigh. Inspired by contemporary designs, King Builders has created a home that integrates all of today’s modern amenities and technology for a simple way of living. Sophistication mixed with simplicity are just two of the essential ingredients that make this cool Queensland pad work. While in theory, a bleached-out space should be stark and cold, this interior tells a very diƪerent story. The white foundation is balanced with timber and stone, creating the perfect blank canvas for a striking space that never gets old. “Our favourite part of the property is

the open main living space with a large open void above, which provides an expansive area to live in — essential for a family of six,” says Brendon. The home is not only supremely comfortable to live in, but also friendly to the earth. All walls and ceilings have been fully insulated to retain heat through the winter months and keep the home cool through summer to reduce the use of air-conditioning. The home’s windows and doors have been designed to capture the northern aspect of the property and are from Trend’s Synergy range with 5mm grey-tinted energy-eƯcient glass. Each goes all the way to the Ʈoor to provide a seamless elegant Ƭnish and a connection between the indoors and out. All lighting throughout the home is energyeƯcient LED. Furniture was supplied by OZ Design Furniture MacGregor which helps to create this ultracontemporary aesthetic. The home has also been specially placed on the property to take advantage of the eastern breezes and capture the northern aspect. Specialising in both new builds and renovations, Brendon and Andy King take a humanist approach to their work, infusing every project with a sense of craftsmanship and an environmentally conscious aesthetic. What sets this property apart is its exceptional layout and tailored design elements that meet the needs of today’s fast-paced society. More than just builders, the duo’s expertise points the way towards the future of design. HD kingbuilders.com.au

TREENA SEYMOUR Meet the artist creating a diverse palette bursting with energy and nature’s beauty Words Alexandra Longstaƪ
A
rt runs deep in Treena Seymour’s veins. From a young age, she was exposed to the art world: her mother was an avid sewer and reupholster, and her nanna was an artist herself. Treena’s family encouraged her to follow her artistic calling and her art was never in short supply. Treena’s journey into becoming an artist began when she enrolled in a two-year Ƭne art course at TAFE. Following this, she was oƪered a cut-andpaste role at a large printing Ƭrm, which saw her skills develop. But Treena cemented her position as an artist when she bit the bullet and decided to take art from passion project to full-time career. “It was a very long, drawn-out decision to leave the workforce I knew so well and venture into an entirely new world,” she explains. “Many questions were going through my mind, such as what if I don’t sell anything after becoming a full-time artist?” But her hard work and leap of faith paid oƪ and her decision to go full-time has rewarded her with a quality of work she didn’t realise was possible. “I have leapt into another dimension and am loving the art I am creating,” says Treena. “Since becoming a fulltime artist, my ability and availability to create art has
140
home design
increased tenfold. I have my works on various{online gallery sites as well as my own website.” Treena’s art is a form of self-expression. She uses it as a means to share her emotions, thoughts, dreams, desires and experiences, in a manner that doesn’t rely on words. “There are times when verbal communication isn’t enough or the message just can’t be expressed deƬnitely in words. A piece of art overcomes these and other such boundaries,” she{explains. And while art is her expressive playground, nature is what takes her there. “For me, the ocean brings a sense of peace and order in my mind. Watching the ocean, I absorb its great energy and am Ƭlled with vitality and strength,” says Treena. This informs much of her art and she hopes to enable the audience to connect with the ocean as beautifully as she does. Treena is heavily inspired by the Impressionist movement, highlighting her appreciation of Monet and Renoir. “The Impressionist style brought colour and light to the foreground and had the image or structure in the background,” explains Treena. “Light and the colours with which they are created dominated those paintings and therefore became
the number-one importance when viewing.” This technique or style of painting inƮuences Treena’s own style of painting. She has developed her own unique Ʈair, but explains that the knowledge of Impressionism is never too far from her mind. Using acrylic, Treena’s pieces bathe in a range of meaning. “Acrylics allow me the freedom to create really whatever I like on whatever I like and come in a vast range of viscosities,” she says. “They also give me the license to create thick impasto paintings. I can build up the paint quickly, as its drying time is so rapid, all without cracking.” The textured nature of acrylic brings Treena endless joy. But she also divulges that she’s not the sort of artist to stick to one thing. She craves diversity and change, which is reƮected in her varying styles of art. “I yearn for the free Ʈow of either an abstract pour like POOLSIDE [one of her artworks] or simply a loose abstract where my brushes are long and big and I can freely push the paint around the canvas like BARNACLES 1, 2 3. Maybe it’s all to do with balance,” says Treena. “I’m not sure but, whatever the reason is, it works for me.” HD artloversaustralia.com.au

A new kitchen is a big investment, and your new space should be as practical as it is pretty. A kitchen design professional will help you make the best decisions from the beginning, saving you time and heartache in the long run. hey’ll consider: Positioning: what are the rooms adjoining the kitchen? From which direction will the kitchen be accessed? Access and safety: will access to an under bench oven be diicult? Will overhead cupboards be within reach? Cooking styles: are most meals prepared on the stovetop, baked in the oven or reheated in the microwave or steam oven? Storage requirements: is shopping done in bulk? Will a new fridge be required now, or should it be allowed for in the future? Budget: will the kitchen investment be in line with the value of the home?
Engaging a specialist bathroom designer will make planning the perfect bathroom a lot less stressful. A design professional will ensure your new bathroom is beautiful, practical and safe. he best bathroom designers will: Assess your family’s requirements – no point having a stunning bathroom if it’s not practical for you and your family; Consider waterprooing, drainage, falls to loor wastes etc, and have an excellent understanding of the relevant Building Codes; Advise on the suitability of products such as tiles, stone, laminate and glass. A myriad of materials can be worked into a bathroom design, but they must be practical; Discuss realistic time frames and the order of works - the amount of work in a bathroom renovation is oten underestimated; you’ll need a plumber, waterproofer, tiler, electrician and painter and maybe even a carpenter. How long are you prepared to live without a bathroom?
You should feel conident that the person designing your new kitchen or bathroom: ;
is aware of the innovative hardware available, and will advise on systems most appropriate – for you and your budget;
;
is knowledgeable about the practicalities (or otherwise) of surfaces and materials; and
;
shows evidence of continuing professional development. In an industry which is ever evolving, a commitment to ongoing training and product research is essential.
Active members of KBDi meet all the above criteria by attending professional development events, fostering good relationships with industry reps and showing real commitment to their profession. Ask your designer if he/she is a KBDi member, or ind a KBDi designer near you at www.kbdi.org.au.

A FRESH START A rejuvenating kitchen, bathroom and hallwaycrenovation
we love THE KITCHEN’S OPEN-PLAN DESIGN renovation is the perfect time to change the orientation of a space if you so desire. While this kitchen’s original location was not an issue, the homeowners disliked its orientation so they decided to Ʈip it. The newly renovated space’s benchtop now faces the open-plan living and dining area, as well as the glass doors, which lead out to the alfresco area. It was also enlarged and a breakfast bar was added, transforming it from a pokey U-shaped space to a large, open kitchen that can be enjoyed by family and friends. The homeowners requested a low-maintenance modern space with a strong focus on smart lighting and many appliances, Ƭxtures and products were chosen with this in mind. A mirrored splashback was selected for the space as it reƮects the Manchurian pear trees that surround the deck, injecting a splash of colour into an otherwise neutral spot. This outhouse-style bathroom space, complete with a blue plastic toilet-roll holder, had been the order of the day once upon a time. This space and the home’s ensuite were both in dire need of a modern makeover and so the homeowners contacted Dreamtech with some speciƬc requests: bathrooms that look minimalist, earthy and organic; no tile trim; and a large window in the ensuite to allow natural light into the space. The porcelain tiles paired with 1.5mm grout lines present a nice soft aesthetic that emulates the look of natural stone, in keeping with the homeowners’ brief. All mitres to the shower niche and windows have

kitchens & bathrooms modern makeover been designed to oƪer a seamless junction without tile trims. Continuing the earthy feel, a tile{insert strip drain was included to conceal the shower drain by presenting as a continuation of the Ʈoor tiles. Concealed shaving cabinets were also used in both wet areas and the vanities in the two spaces were located back to back. To centre the mirrors over the vanities in both wet areas, a Ʈat mirror attached to the tiles that sits Ʈush with the recessed shaving cabinet was installed. The inverse conƬguration was employed on the other side of the wall to permit shaving cabinets

on both sides in a back-to-back conƬguration with the mirrors. The renovation resulted in two beautiful bathrooms that the homeowners will treasure for years to come. “The hallway was by far the most technically demanding component of the entire rebuild,” says John Lovick of Dreamtech. While removing all the artworks from the walls, John decided that the narrow 16m hall wall should perform as a gallery of sorts. To achieve a pared-back gallery aesthetic, it was important to conceal or omit anything extraneous. “I speciƬed EzyJamb by Studco, which features trowelled-
in trimless door jambs along the length of the hall,” he says. The full length of the hallway now also{features a concealed art hanging system by{Artrack. Omitting skirting boards was also essential.{“The Ʈoor must be exceptionally Ʈat over the entire 16m to permit a 10mm shadowline wall-to-Ʈoor detail,” explains John. “Happily, the client agreed on a 3m custom steel reinforced door attached to a CS cavity slider, with a full-height detail and no closing{jamb. To use a door that was standard, or even 2350mm, would
have compromised{the{seamless ceiling transition{from gallery to lounge.” Originally, the hall featured one ineƪective skylight. “I speciƬed three of the widest landscape-oriented Velux skylights and then proceeded to ‘Dreamtech’ them,” says John. “I framed up the openings so that the width of the skylight doubled by the time it presented at ceiling height, thus markedly improving the amount of natural daylight entering the home. Not intent that enough detail had been injected into them, I used Ʈexible plaster to achieve a scalloped sweep into the ceiling — an
outcome that I think looks very sophisticated and{enhances the artful quality of the space.” Lighting was speciƬed by Brett of Custom Lighting in Armadale, Victoria. The hall lights wash the wall-hung art with directional light while the mini LED spotlights are Ƭxed and highlight the original masonry wall or any art hung from the concealed art track above. The result of this renovation is a chic and{modern space that adds both function and{style. HD Designer: John Lovick for Dreamtech dreamtech.net.au

esigned by Workroom, this grand, topƮoor studio apartment is a pinnacle in contemporary architecture. Drawing inspiration from industrial design trends, this open plan interior embodies a serenity that Ʈows throughout the entire space. The focal point of this award-winning architecture is Neolith Beton, which synergises the design elements together. Exclusively available from CDK Stone, Neolith Beton creates a sense of natural tranquillity to every design. With rich grey tones, this spectacular sintered stone is the next revolution in industrial design trends. The light grey background is highlighted with raw, unaltered shadows. Drawing inspiration from an ageless material — concrete, Neolith Beton tells a story of time. Fast becoming the most versatile Neolith, Beton is ideal for use as wall cladding, Ʈooring, benchtops, vanities and more. With more than 20 years’ experience in the stone industry, CDK Stone Director, Tony Victor explains why Architects across Australia are including Neolith in their luxury, contemporary designs. “Neolith Beton is the epitome of modern, industrial design. With
so many clients wanting a current, contemporary design, architects are looking at Neolith to push the boundaries of design.” The contrast within this sintered stone perfectly harmonises it with all other architectural elements. Neolith Beton reverberates a rough and organic atmosphere throughout this whole kitchen and bathroom. Being heat, scratch and stain-resistant, Neolith Beton is fast becoming the modern alternative to concrete. “Grey is still on trend and we are seeing a shift away from whites,” adds Tony. “With black currently being a popular colour for tapware, sinks and Ƭnishing, architects are looking for a balance in contrast to synergise these elements. In order to create a balanced colour palette, designers are increasingly looking to Neolith Beton to add contrast to complete their spaces.” Creating a timeless beauty, Neolith Beton produces a raw, unprocessed and unparalleled elegance. his new bathroom was part of a Melbourne warehouse conversion, so the owner asked for materials from the existing warehouse to be incorporated into the ensuite. He also wanted the space to be a retreat from the busy world outside. The owner isn’t a bath person, so the emphasis is on the open shower area and two vanities. A focal point of this stunning design is the beautiful, warm copper tiles on the shower recess that form the waterfall backdrop. With irregular, horizontal grooves in the tiles, the water cascades over the ripples and the shower transforms into a water feature. This is balanced by Ʈoating vanities on either side, which are simple in line and detail. The stringybark vanities with black detailing add warmth and
colour to the space, while matt black tapware makes a statement and complements the vanities nicely. Large 1200mm x 600mm matt concrete-look porcelain tiles to the Ʈoor and walls are set in a brick pattern with a subtle linear detail. The tile Ƭnish and set-out also connect to the exposed brickwork and concrete Ƭnishes throughout the warehouse. Further deƬning the horizontal lines, recessed mirror cabinets extend beyond the vanities and open shelving is conveniently and beautifully displayed beneath. The cabinet lighting highlights the warmth and beauty of the timber and provides ‘night lighting’ when needed. Designer: Patricia La Torre for OUTSIDEINSIDE Building Elements. HD delucia.com.au

feature flooring looring is one of the most important elements in your home. The colours, textures and feel of the Ʈoor will impact the mood and personality of a room, whether that’s intimate and cosy, vibrant and evocative, or low key and sombre. Flooring is tactile; unlike some other elements, you connect with it because you touch it every time you enter a room. Flooring also makes a statement in design but there are other factors to consider, such as ongoing maintenance and associated costs, durability, wear and texture. Some Ʈooring can also be quieter than others; kids and pets can create noise, and some Ʈooring is better at absorbing sound.

STYLE FILE — COLOUR ME HAPPY Then of course there’s the look of the Ʈooring and how it complements the rest of your home. So how important is Ʈooring in matching your decor and setting the scene for comfort? We{put the question to Carlene Duƪy from The Block, Reno Rumble and styling{consultancy service Cedar & Suede. Carlene says Ʈooring is important in deƬning the look and comfort of your home. “The Ʈoor covers such{a large surface area — you really do need to get it right as it can dictate the mood of the spaces,” she says. And when it comes to important decisions, choosing colour is key. “Our Ʈooring is an engineered{timber Black Mountain Oak from Decorug. It’s a dark colour with just enough variation in the grain which I love; I didn’t want to go matt black, which can show up{dust and dirt,” she says. Carlene says darker colours create a feeling of warmth, but in a Scandinavian- or beach house-style home, lighter-coloured oak also can look fabulous. However, she tends to advise people to stay away from whitewashed, silver or grey timber. “I think it can end up looking cold,” she says. Don’t want just one type of Ʈooring? Mixing it up with diƪerent materials is Ƭne, depending on how the spaces are used. “Polished concrete is good in a kitchen and other high-traƯc areas; it doesn’t show up dirt and it’s hardwearing,” advises Carlene. When it comes to bedrooms, softer Ʈooring is better,{according to Carlene. “If you’re doing a hard surface in the bedroom, as opposed to choosing carpet, I{always recommend using timber, not a tile or polished{concrete, as it’s warmer under your feet,” she says. “And{even if you use engineered timber in a bedroom, always use a carpet or rug for aesthetic{warmth.” When you have narrowed down your choice of Ʈooring, Carlene recommends taking a sample of the product home, just as you would a swatch of fabric or

sample pot of paint. It can look very diƪerent in the natural light in your home as opposed to the{artiƬcial lighting in the store. Rugs and runners are also important on Ʈoors, in hallways and under furniture to add softness and comfort. “Rugs are key to adding a homely element and another textural layer,” says Carlene. For hallways she suggests choosing low pile to reduce trip hazards, and to opt for highly durable carpets and rugs to cope with heavy foot traƯc. For the bedroom, however, it’s a diƪerent story. “You can have plusher pile and I’d suggest choosing a pattern to disguise marks,” she says. Carlene says a hot new look in contemporary carpeting, to add character and warmth, is manufactured Persian rugs. “Handcrafted{Persian rugs are expensive, but now you can get machine-made ones. They’re aƪordable and available in beautiful colours and patterns,” she says. With the huge variety of Ʈooring options available, what is Carlene’s favourite? “Engineered timber. You can also lay it yourself, and if the budget is tight, timberlook laminate is another good option. I do favour timber and it wears well. Our daughter Ʈooded the bathroom and we have no warping or damage to our engineered timber Ʈoor — it’s so hardwearing.” But of course, everyone has their own style and budget. So how can you narrow down your{choices? “Buy what you love to create a home that has your personality. The end product needs to suit your purpose,{so be inƮuenced by your heart but keep in mind practicalities,” advises Carlene.
A TREAT FOR FEET Flooring is for walking on, right? So one of the most important aspects of Ʈooring is how it feels underfoot,{as well as its colouring. Flooring Xtra product manager Loreta Robinson says there is growing emphasis on how a Ʈooring product might feel underfoot, and also on how easy the Ʈoor will be to look after once it’s installed.

HEAT IT UP Floor heating heats from the ground up so it’s important to include it in the design at the very beginning of your home’s design. This will ensure that you have plenty of options and that your heating system is cost-eƪective and eƯcient. CARPET
CONCRETE CONNECTION
“With carpet we are seeing two clear trends: reƬned softness and texture — both wonderful tactile experiences for our feet,” says Loreta. “Wool lends itself to creating beautiful, natural textured carpets. Any carpet which is made from pure New Zealand wool carries a reputation for softness and continues to be regarded as the epitome of quality and luxury in carpet.” But with new production methods, synthetics are making their mark. “Synthetic carpet can now be produced to be softer than ever before, and with stain- and fade-resistant properties, they are easier to maintain and will keep their appearance for longer,” she says. “Our Urban Instinct range showcases beautiful wool-textured carpet, while our Softie range features soft, yet hardwearing carpets suitable for any home.” Loreta adds it’s important to follow manufacturer guidelines with any carpeting so your investment will look good for years to come.
There are many good reasons to choose concrete Ʈooring. Concrete can be rebuƪed and it’s easy to maintain and keep clean. Toby Macdonald from Concrete Resurfacing Systems says it’s popular because it’s seamless. It’s hardwearing and Toby says that, unlike tiles, you don’t have grout lines. “People love the appearance of polished concrete; get it repolished or resealed every Ƭve years or so and it will always look good and perform well.” If you think concrete might be cool underfoot, the solution is hydronic heating. “With water pipes in the concrete, the heat transfers straight through and the concrete, being a solid mass, holds the heat,” he says. “You control it just like general home heating systems. Put it on in winter, charge it up in spring and you don’t normally use it in summer.” According to Toby, new-look polished concrete has changed over the past decade. “Ten years ago the look was all about grinding it down to expose{the aggregate to give it a terrazzo look. Now{it’s more about that seamless trowel concrete look,” he says. In the past, concrete Ʈooring was often found in industrial-style homes but now it’s making its mark in other home styles as well. And if indoor-outdoor living is high on your agenda, you can have concrete Ʈoors indoors that Ʈow to your outdoor spaces, too.
TILE FILE Tiled Ʈooring gives you a wide range of choice — from granite to porcelain, ceramic and more, not to mention the diverse range of colours and patterns that is available to match any decor and style of home. Versatility is where tiling comes to the fore. Imagine a look, colour, pattern and design, and you can virtually achieve anything you can think up with tiles. They are also durable, stain-resistant and waterproof. They’re an aƪordable solution that’s a popular choice for many areas of the home.
TIMBER AND LAMINATE Hard Ʈooring in the home is a popular option, with technological advancements in production methods, coupled with a vast array of diƪerent
products that combine the very best of timber properties with aesthetics and improved serviceability. Not only will it look good, it will go the distance. Loreta Robinson says hybrid Ʈooring is a new category of hard Ʈooring that ticks every box when it comes to both looks and performance. “Hybrid Ʈooring brings together the best elements of laminate and luxury vinyl plank Ʈooring into an easy-to-install and easy-to-maintain Ʈoating Ʈoor. It replicates the look of real timber with superior photography and printing technology,” she says. “For warmth and natural beauty underfoot in hard Ʈooring, an engineered timber Ʈoating Ʈoor is the pinnacle. Trending products here showcase the rustic, natural features found in timber, either in a European oak timber or a beautiful warm Australian species timber such as spotted gum or blackbutt,” adds Loreta.
BIGGER IS BETTER When it comes to new-look Ʈooring, Grant Miles from Carpet Call says size really does matter. “Everything is getting bigger; tiles are bigger and Ʈoorboards are also being upsized,” he says. “We used to have timber Ʈooring in 1.8m-long boards, now we’ve got 2.4m-long boards.” So what does larger-format Ʈooring mean? Well for starters, larger-format tiles give the illusion of more space and make the room appear larger. Longer Ʈoorboards lend themselves to a cleaner uncluttered look with fewer joins. The look is far more streamlined.

What are some of the new looks in Ʈooring? “Hyper matt oak colours with texture and saw cuts. Long wide panels reign supreme. Blackbutt and spotted gum are the most popular Australian species. Light beige and beige are gaining popularity.” What’s popular right now and why? “The waterproof story is driving home hard. Anything that can stand the rigours of a busy family and remain looking great. Also a consistent look throughout the house is gaining popularity (the same Ʈoor in kitchen, dining area, living area and hallway). And a surface that is as true to nature as possible, and not plastic.” What are some new emerging products? “Rigid PVC hybrids are getting a lot of traction because of the waterproof story, but are still short vinyl planks (not eco-friendly). In essence, all other eco-friendly laminates with a true waterproof surface are seeing signs of massive popularity and uptake because of the look, price and performance on oƪer. Also, for hygienic reasons, it’s often preferred over carpet.” HD

SKY’S THE LIMIT If you’ve been considering installing an elevator in your abode, here’s why making the leap could take your home to new heights Words Alexandra Longstaƪ

WHY INSTALL A HOME ELEVATOR? ithout a doubt, a home elevator could be considered a bit of a luxury. Installing a home elevator has many beneƬts — it makes life at home easier, smoother and{downright functional. A home elevator{gives homeowners options. And long-term ones at that. First and foremost, a home elevator oƪers mobility around the home that could beneƬt many diƪerent household members. These homeowners might be families with young children who Ƭnd tackling stairs tricky with prams and little ones, or elderly homeowners who Ƭnd access via the stairs is no longer possible. It’s very appealing to know that as we get older, leaving a beloved family home might not have to happen. A home elevator ensures that a home is kept in the family for life. “Everyone beneƬts from having a lift in their home,” explains Dean Nesbitt, director of InƬnity Lifts. “This includes people with disabilities or deteriorating conditions such as arthritis as well as nursing mothers who have been shopping with the baby and need to get to the second- or third-storey kitchen. Installing a lift can provide easy access to the home and enhance its enjoyment.” “A home elevator enables people to live in their own homes longer without having to{worry about navigating stairs or moving out,” adds Bradley Wood, marketing co-ordinator for Lift Shop. “In addition to this, lifts are also seen as a high-end item, which adds to the home’s resale value.” “Initially associated with the ageing population, residential elevators are fast becoming a lifestyle inclusion for all multi-level homes,” says Peter van Emmerik of The Residential Lift Company. “As soaring land prices force developers upwards, elevators prove a safer alternative to stairs. Residential lifts are now replacing the dumb waiters being installed to take groceries from the garage to{the pantry and laundry chutes previously included{in luxury homes. Many people use their elevators for commuting items that are diƯcult on stairs such as luggage and furniture. Some use them for their sick/older pets. Many people do not want to purchase double-storey homes but, with land prices where they are, cannot aƪord a [large enough] single-storey home, so installing an elevator resolves{that{problem.” “Other appealing features of a home lift include security and functionality,” says Liarne Peek, national sales manager at Homelift by Cranetec. “For most, carrying bulky and heavy objects up and down the stairs, especially in a three-storey house, is tiresome. However, with the installation of an elevator, the risk of falling is reduced, along with wasted time.” As a byproduct of this, a home elevator increases{the value of a home, giving homeowners a return for their investment, whether this is reaping the beneƬts over a lifetime or selling{their home.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS? Installing a home elevator is a much more cost-eƪective alternative to moving house and, as with{any expense for the home, prices vary depending on many aspects. “Home elevators can{vary in price quite signiƬcantly depending{on{the type of doors chosen and what sort of shaft structure the lift is housed in,” explains Dean. “There{are cost-eƪective Ƭnishes such as stainless steel and laminate, or you can Ƭt out your lift car with local custom selections. You can have a lift installed in your home with InƬnity{Lifts{for as little as $38,000 plus GST, all the way up to $80,000 plus GST, subject to lift type, Ƭnishes etc.”

TOP TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS If you are considering installing a home elevator in your home, it’s highly recommended you speak with an expert to get as much information before you begin installation. Here are some words of wisdom from those in the know. Peter van Emmerik, director of The Residential Lift Company “A home elevator is a signiƬcant investment. Make sure you test drive the one you want before purchasing it.” residentiallift.com.au Bradley Wood, marketing co-ordinator at Lift Shop “Do your research. Look around and Ƭnd a lift that is right for you and your budget. And try before you buy, experience the lift and the ride quality. And decide how much space you have available.” liftshop.com.au Dean Nesbitt, director of InƬnity Lifts “In the case of elevators, bigger is better. So if space allows, go for a larger car size with a higher weight capacity. This has real beneƬts should the homeowner need to be in a wheelchair in the future as it will allow more space for wheelchair and carer etc. A larger lift car only fractionally increases the price.” inƬnitylifts.com.au Liarne Peek, national sales manager at Homelift by Cranetec “For those planning a new home build, it’s never too early to decide on the lift that you wish to install. Ensure that your lift company liaises with your builder and architect from the outset to ensure that all measurements are correct. Likewise, always establish the lead time on a lift so that one element doesn’t aƪect the rest of the build.” homelift.net.au
CASE STUDY This recent project in Mosman showcases an impressive home elevator installation. The homeowners of this project are retired and had to make the tough decision on whether to move house or stay in their much-loved abode. Steep steps meant moving around would be challenging as they got older. Choosing to stay in their home rather
than leaving it, the couple excavated 500 tonnes of sandstone so that they could install a much-needed lift. “Robert and Wendy are now able to stay in their home for many years to come, as they can use the lift instead of climbing the stairs,” explains Dean Nesbitt, director of InƬnity Lifts. “They have also added value to their home.” inƬnitylifts.com.au

INTRODUCING THE RESILIFT … THIS INNOVATIVE OFFERING FROM THE RESIDENTIAL LIFT COMPANY CARVES A NEW PATH FOR HOME ELEVATORS An innovative design created by Peter Van Emmerik, the ResiLift is the Ƭrst of its kind on the{market. The beauty of this nifty design is that it is a self-supporting, compact home elevator that doesn’t require a lift shaft. The design’s motor travels with the lift as it ascends and descends, so no penetration is required in the upper ceiling. It was created to service homeowners with existing homes, oƪering a groundbreaking installation method. Since its invention, the design has been copied by many other manufacturers and has now come to be known as the “through-Ʈoor”{design. “The beauty of the ResiLift is its simplicity,” explains Peter, inventor of the ResiLift. “The ResiLift was created speciƬcally for the residential market and rather than taking a small bedroom of space, it has minimal visual impact so that it can be placed almost anywhere in the home and still blend into your existing decor.” The Residential Lift Company oƪers Ƭve diƪerent models of the ResiLift design. Each one caters to two passengers and a 200kg capacity. These nifty elevators are petite and unimposing. The smallest of the designs is the Mirage, which is only 700mm from front to back. Other larger models are also available and these cater to the needs of homeowners who might need a little more space to accommodate a walker or wheelchair. These models come with either one or two entrances, catering to homes where the entry and exit might be on diƪerent sides of the{elevator. “Being electric, the ResiLift is quiet and very reliable,” explains Peter. “ResiLift runs oƪ the standard domestic power, which makes it cost eƪective to install and to operate. “In terms of cost, installing a ResiLift is signiƬcantly cheaper than moving house considering agent fees and stamp duty. The ResiLift is the most cost-eƪective home elevator on the market. It is possible for customers to have a ResiLift fully installed for under $30,000, including building modiƬcations. Apart from its entry-level price tag, the building works required are also minimal.” Homeowners should be aware that a ResiLift cannot completely replace a staircase, though. There still needs to be an alternative method of evacuation from the upper level of any home for safety precautions. “This could be an external staircase or, in a split-level home, it could be an upper-level exit,” explains Peter. “But, if possible, it is better to retain internal stairs as well.” By law, all elevators need to be inspected annually. hen homes are built, homeowners devote countless hours poring over designs, room layouts, Ƭxtures, Ƭttings and landscaping ideas — the roof can sometimes be one of the last things to think about. But rooƬng is important; after all, its job is to protect what’s underneath it. The Australian climate can be unforgiving, with torrential downpours, searing summer heat and galeforce winds. A roof not only has to shield those who live there from the elements, it also needs to provide thermal comfort — to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. And, of course, aesthetically speaking, rooƬng that blends with the rest of your home’s colour scheme, style and architecture is a bit like the icing on a cake — it Ƭnishes it oƪ with the perfect look. It also doesn’t warp, rot or crack. And who doesn’t love the gentle pitter patter of spring rain on a metal roof? With companies such as Colorbond oƪering 22 diƪerent steel colour choices, homeowners really are spoilt for choice when matching colour palettes. Steel is also Ƭre retardant. Whether you have a federation-, classic- or contemporary-style home, beach bungalow or a country cottage, there is a huge diversity of products, Ƭnishes and tile proƬles to choose from. Tiles also play a part in acoustic buƪering from up above, to reduce aircraft or highrise noise, and they’re made to last. And over time, if a tile cracks, it’s a simple replacement. to European designs, but a shingle tile adds a distinctive polished look to a contemporary home. Terracotta tiles are manufactured from naturally procured clays that are kiln Ƭred to extremely high temperatures, and they’re deƬnitely made to last. Companies such as Boral oƪer a 50-year guarantee on terracotta. Concrete tiles have been one of the most popular options in rooƬng for more than 75 years and there are many good reasons why. They’re durable, aƪordable and, according to Monier, the longer they’re laid, the more robust they become. This is due to the carbonation process — you have a roof tile that is strong and getting stronger every 28 days with no permeability or porosity issues. Then of course there are ceramic tiles, which are making waves in the building industry. Brett Ward, general manager of marketing for
Brickworks Building Products, says ceramic tiles are deƬnitely hot property. “There is a strong trend for Ʈat contemporary rooƬng tiles and particularly ceramic rooƬng options as home designs look for long-lasting stylish rooƬng solutions,” he says. “We’re thrilled to see so many homes across{Australia adorned with our La Escandella Planum roof tiles, which oƪer a sleek, reƬned{shape and modern elegant look that lasts{forever.” Brett says that integrated solar tiles are also{becoming part of many Australian homeowners’ rooftops, as eco-savvy consumers{seek to harness the power of the sun and save on energy costs. “To complement the Planum range, Bristile RooƬng has recently developed an integrated solar tile, which interlinks with Planum roof tiles so that you can

Sarah Jones, marketing manager at Monier RooƬng, says the company is seeing a strong trend towards streamlined, Ʈat tiles as well as its range of shingle and slate-look tiles. “With the Hamptons and coastal look very much on trend, we are seeing a strong lift in our shingle and slate-look tiles. In fact, we conducted quantitative research of more than 500 Australian consumers and the coastal look was by far the most preferred facade/home style,” she says. “Another strong trend we are seeing is towards Monier SOLARtile. Monier also just launched
another Australian Ƭrst, InlineSOLAR, which is a cheaper price point than SOLARtile, but allows the panels to sit Ʈush within the roof, so street appeal is maintained. “While dark and grey hues are still the most popular tile colours, we are seeing a small trend towards lighter colours. Having launched a new Salt Spray (white) colour tile a year ago, we have had strong uptake of this colour,” continues Sarah. “We are Ƭnding pitches are getting lower for homes and for ultra-modern homes, thin and streamlined is very much on trend. Monier{launched a little over a year ago a new category to rooƬng, Elemental. This is an extremely{strong rooƬng product that is lightweight. It allows you to go as low as 10 degrees in pitch but comes in four diƪerent sizes including an Ultra panel size 1500mm x 750mm,
which we are Ƭnding works well for those skillion ultra-modern{homes{that{go{to low pitch.” ROOFING THAT VANISHES If you have covered entertaining and alfresco areas{as part of your home, you may also choose to have retractable rooƬng on that section. It can be there one minute, oƪering protection from rain wind and{searing summer sun, and can gently slide or fold away, allowing warm sunshine to stream in during winter. Budget, of course, is how much you have to spend — and some materials have a higher price tag than others. Construction methodology refers to the planned method of construction; it considers legal requirements and contractual constraints. For example, is the home a heritage property? If renovating, this can impact on your selection of cladding options. Once you’ve ticked that box, Paul says there are other things you should determine. “You need to consider texture, colour and shade, how much reƮection there is and how much light is absorbed{by the material.” Paul recommends getting physical samples to{help you decide, rather than just do online research. This is{because by only looking at computer imagery, you can’t feel the texture of the product or see what it will{look like. “Take samples to the site and hold them up in{the{speciƬc orientation and location, so you can see how the light reacts to the product. Then you’ll{know you’ve made the right choice or that you{might need to adjust it,” he explains.

There a lot of decisions to be made and, according to Paul, being strategic about where more expensive products are used is an important one. “Use premium products where they’ll make the most impact, as opposed to more aƪordable cladding types,” he says. “For example, if it’s a street facade, it’s probably more relevant to use nuanced and{textured material to create a sense of richness and detail to a material palette, whereas around the side or back, where you don’t see it often, it might not be such a priority.” So, what’s popular right now? “We get requests{for natural products or environmentally{sensitive products over highly reƬned products. These preferred products include low-VOC, low in embodied energy or products such as timber sourced from sustainably managed forests,” says Paul. “But there are also a lot of composite panels{being used and brick has made a resurgence. There’s a lot of research and development in the{brick sector, looking at colour, texture, and{gloss.”
CLADDING OPTIONS One of the most popular types of cladding is timber; it’s been the cladding of choice for{many{homeowners for hundreds of years and{for good reason. Timber is warm{and{organic,{as well as{durable and{timeless. It{does {require{maintenance,{though. Fibre cement comes in planks, boards or{sheets.{It’s also sustainable and durable. Scyon is a{type of Ƭbre-cement weatherboard introduced{a{few years ago that’s deƬnitely{grabbed{the interest{of the construction industry. It’s thermally sound and{available in a huge range of{sizes, with{slimline or thicker boards that can be laid{horizontally or vertically. Brick is one of the lowest-maintenance cladding{types and it’s been popular for more than{100 years. Some homes are double brick, but most are constructed as brick veneer with the brickwork forming the outer layer, over a timber{frame. Cement render, a mixture
of sand and{cement, is sometimes added over brickwork{to{add a speciƬc colour and a{textured{smooth Ƭnish. At the budget end of building products is{plywood — it’s aƪordable, lightweight and just{a{little bit quirky. MIXING IT UP Innovation has led to a plethora of clever new{concepts in cladding — custom, manmade or derived from nature. When deciding on{cladding for a home, why not opt for a couple of{diƪerent types to create a design feature — for{example, a feature entryway constructed from{timber and brick, or metal and glass. Paul says thinking outside the box can pay big dividends. “Sometimes we use ‘ordinary’ or domestic materials in compositionally{interesting{or extraordinary ways to achieve an exceptional outcome,” he says. Playful creativity is{what makes{a striking standalone feature and{sets a design apart from{the rest.

hat matters to you in terms of style, connectivity, privacy and individuality? When you think about it, window coverings have a big job to do — they invite in light, keep out winter chills and provide privacy. And that’s just the beginning … Window coverings also add texture and style{and highlight views beyond the home’s interior. They can also make a beautiful design statement in a room. Window coverings, both indoors and out, do far more than make a style statement; they can add colour and warm or cool accents to the colour palette of a room or outdoor entertaining space. There are myriad choices when it comes to selecting window coverings. For inside, there are Roman blinds, roller blinds, vertical blinds, venetians and plantation shutters. Outdoors, there are awnings, shutters and blinds.
W
TREND WATCH Cool new looks in blinds, shutters and awnings are{making their mark in the style stakes. What will{you choose? • A pop of colour. Take a tour around your neighbourhood and you might Ƭnd a front door in vibrant blue, cherry red or teal. Doors with attitude are climbing up the style stakes, with bright colour accents that draw the eye and invite you inside. The same applies to interior blinds and awnings. A vibrantly coloured blind, geometric pattern or arty printed blind can lift a room and make a lasting design statement. Outdoors, a colourful awning or two can add a style boost to a tired exterior.
192

• Nice to nature. Eco-friendly blinds and shutters are in demand as homeowners become more environmentally conscious and opt for green products for window furnishings. Bamboo blinds, timber sourced from sustainable forests, faux timber blinds and other materials that are recyclable and made of products designed to leach less toxins into the environment are more in demand. • The black and white story. Stuck for inspiration? Striped black and white awnings and blinds add a touch of sophistication and warmth — and they’ll suit virtually every style of home, from contemporary to period houses. Black and white is timeless and adds a beautiful focal point to your home. • Now you see me. Now you don’t. If you have a gorgeous exterior view, why cover it up? Modern exterior blinds are barely there — they keep out glaring sunlight, covering outdoor spaces so they remain cool and comfortable, leaving you and your guests to enjoy the views. EXPERT DESIGN ADVICE Choosing the right interior blind is all about balancing aesthetics with function. Your window coverings need to do the job they’re intended for, but of course you also want them to look beautiful{and with so many options in modern window shade and privacy solutions, you’re well{and truly covered. International designer Valerio Cupellini from Red Interior Design says one of his favourite solutions for privacy, light and aesthetics is plantation shutters. “They are a product that really adds value to a

home,” he says. “Once they’re on the windows, you get a double beneƬt — they look great from the inside and the outside as well.” Roller blinds are another product that is popular for homeowners who prefer a clean, uncluttered look, according to Valerio. “Those who love the minimalist style often choose roller blinds,” he says. “They’re quite compact, available in many styles and colours and they disappear, so you virtually get an uninterrupted view.” If you’re looking for a blind that will play a larger role in the decor of your space, this is where Roman blinds come to the fore. “Basically, Roman blinds do the same job as a roller blind but they sit above the window and stack like a concertina, so they’re always visible,” says Valerio. Vertical blinds are a great option for glass sliding doors because they can slide completely away. “New looks in verticals have a wider blade, almost a panel blade that slides back, rather than rotates, like the old-style verticals,” says Valerio. Some new-look verticals also have a sheer fabric connecting each blade to give it a Ʈowing look.
194
home design
“When you tilt it open, you still have a soft sheer that gives you privacy,” adds Valerio. Another new concept in blinds and shutters is automation, allowing homeowners far more control over their internal and external environments. “You can get an app on your phone to integrate blinds and other technology at home,” explains Valerio. “This means you can operate your blinds from wherever you like, even if you are over the other side of the world. Basically, you time the blinds to come up and down whenever you want.” ENERGY EFFICIENCY The right window coverings can help you stay snug{in winter and permit plenty of cooling breezes to Ʈow through in the warmer months. With so many stylish, made-to-measure and custom choices, there’s no need to compromise on aesthetics and functionality. According to the Australian Window Association, windows critically aƪect the heating and cooling loads of a home. In fact, up to 40 per cent of your home’s heating energy may be lost
and up to 87 per cent of heat can be gained in summer through windows. This can result in the reliance of appliances such as air conditioners and heaters. Therefore, improving your windows’ thermal performance and choosing the right coverings make good sense, both for your hip pocket and for the planet. With less reliance on energy through heating and cooling{measures indoors, there are less greenhouse gas emissions. Choosing the right window for the job is a great way to start — talk to the experts, consult with your builder, architect or designer, who will factor in window size and orientation and what the window is for. For example, are you looking for a large picture window to showcase a view, or perhaps a{row of louvred windows to invite in a fresh spring{breeze? Modern high-performance glass can be tinted, double glazed, triple glazed or include numerous other special features that promote better insulation and energy eƯciency. The right window coverings can also help you save energy and insulate your home.

SELECTING YOUR WINDOW COVERINGS Jenny Brown, national marketing manager at LuxaƮex, shares her top Ƭve things to think about when choosing your window coverings. 1 Blinds shouldn’t be an afterthought at the end of the project. They are a major part of a room visually and something you will interact with every day, so ensuring you achieve an end result that is both beautiful and practical is vital. 2 Get expert advice. Specialists will consider a variety of factors that others may not, such as window positioning, the function of the room, as well as light and shade control options. You can take your design plans in with you to specially trained LuxaƮex consultants in one of our many showrooms nationwide. 3 Privacy is an important consideration for many homeowners, particularly for bedrooms and bathrooms. With higher-density living on the increase around Australia, you must consider if your room faces the street, a neighbour or a pathway where people walk, in order to determine the level of privacy you need during the day as well as the evening. 4 Child and pet safety are becoming an increasing concern for homeowners. All of our window coverings are designed with child safety in mind and are compliant with the latest ACCC safety regulations. From cordless alternatives to motorised operation systems, there are many innovative lifting mechanisms that incorporate safety, convenience and beauty in their development. 5 Consider the whole-house solution. There is a longstanding idea that every room should have the same type of window covering to create a consistent look, which is not necessarily the case. Consistency can be achieved by using diƪerent products in the same fabric and colour. After all, the windows on southfacing facades will need something very diƪerent to those on west-facing facades, and the product most suitable to use over doors versus windows can also vary greatly. The versatility of the LuxaƮex product range and the extensive fabrics available means you{can use the most suitable products per application without compromising on the overall Ƭnished look. HD

ighting, like the internet, is something we rarely think about. It’s there. It’s useful. And it’s not until it stops working that we realise just how much we rely on it. Lighting plays an important role in any interior space.{When{decorating, people usually focus on furniture, carpentry and walls, and lighting almost{always becomes an afterthought. Enter Project 20 — Australia’s premier luxury architectural lighting supply and design specialist servicing residential and commercial projects in Queensland and throughout Australia. With more than 30 years of lighting experience both nationally and internationally, the company works collaboratively with you to create stunning and dynamic illuminated spaces. Project 20 has established itself as a formidable force in the industry, using progressive and energy-eƯcient lighting sourced locally and from around the world. “We collaborate with some of the world’s leading lighting craftspeople, designers and companies that share the same work ethos as ourselves: passion, integrity, creativity, exceptional customer service and a desire to deliver results,” says Pete Seabrook, managing director of Project 20. “We specialise in residential, corporate, hospitality and aged care projects and include modern, contemporary, classical and traditional architectural lighting ranges to suit your individual requirements.” A new build, renovation or extension, whether it be commercial, hospitality or residential in nature, can often be a very complex task if approached and undertaken in the wrong way. Hey, it can be a mission even if approached the right way! “One of the many facets of construction is how to illuminate the building correctly. Most people Ƭnd this a little confusing and overwhelming,” says Pete. “By engaging lighting professionals in a company such as Project 20, who can oƪer the appropriate advice, guidance and direction as well as a diverse range of products from national and international lighting partners, feelings of confusion are replaced with conƬdence and clarity.” Lighting is an essential feature in every room of the home. Why, then, is it often overlooked from a design perspective? Lighting is so much more than basic illumination. It is also instrumental in crafting the mood and ambience of a space. “Lighting is often left to the last minute and this is where problems arise; budgets are stretched and quality is compromised,” says Pete. “But if you don’t illuminate in the correct way, your space will appear{drab and unappealing. Allow a realistic,{suƯcient budget for decent lighting from{the start.” Thanks to Project 20, it’s never been easier to get the lighting right. Oƪering lighting consultations, lighting designs and lighting supplies, as a collective number of services or as individually required, the company injects a serious amount of energy and determination into your lighting, ensuring your project will always be in good hands. HAMPTONS HAVEN Media personality Deborah Hutton walks us through the creation of her dream Hamptons-inspired renovation Words Deborah Hutton
enovating a home can be a daunting task, especially to the uninitiated Ƭrst-timer, like myself. From window trims to balcony railings, I’m amazed by how many decisions I’ve{had{to make on the go that I’d never thought {to consider. The one thing I’ve found invaluable in these instances is understanding the look I want to achieve for my Hamptons-inspired coastal home and sticking to it. CREATING A LOOK AND LIFESTYLE I have always loved the magniƬcent mansions you{see in the Hamptons; they are true coastal chic. My all-time favourite house was featured in the movie Something’s Gotta Give with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. There is something about the relaxed, casual nature of the architecture that Ƭts perfectly with a seaside home and our Australian lifestyle.
Alongside the Hamptons aesthetic, I also wanted to incorporate the Queenslander look of{my grandparents’ home, with its quintessential{weatherboard exterior, corrugatediron roof, large, open verandahs and magniƬcent garden. It’s the childhood memories of that wonderful house I’d like to somehow replicate in my own space. Both styles feature a beautiful weatherboard look, so I’ve decided to clad my home in Linea weatherboard, which will give it the street appeal I love so much in Hamptons and Queenslander designs. I’m also creating a large, open living space with high, vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and a classic muted palette — all important features that pay tribute to that style of home. I’m really after a relaxing space that I can kick back in while entertaining friends. I think of houses and their interiors a little like wardrobe dressing. Externally, the look of a house is its dress; the windows, doors and verandahs are the accessories; and the interiors/soft furnishings are the beautiful jewellery. The impression you get when you see a house for the Ƭrst time stays with you and reveals a lot about the lifestyle of the person who lives there; it creates an impact, so getting the “dress” right is essential.
DEFINING THE ESSENTIALS OF MY HAMPTONS-INSPIRED DESIGN Wrapping the house in Linea weatherboard was a must; with its beautiful, deep shadowlines, it will be the most striking feature. The exterior cladding{provides clean, horizontal lines that create coastal charm, while timber-detailed balustrades,{exposed beams and tongueand-groove{panelling all lend their style to my Hamptons-inspired facade. TAKING MY LOOK FROM INSPIRATION TO INSTALLATION Alongside researching the look I wanted, I knew I needed to get my head around how my style would be achieved and the materials I would need. I started looking into it the minute I bought my house. Having never taken on a project of this size, I decided to head to the Home Show in Sydney to get some ideas of products and Ƭnishes. That’s when I discovered Linea weatherboard. The beautiful shadowlines instantly reminded me of the Queenslander homes I grew up in and the Hamptons aesthetic I was aspiring to achieve. I also spent many hours scouring design sites to create my moodboard. Having a strong, deƬned moodboard makes talking to architects, builders and
designers much easier when you have imagery that illustrates exactly what you want to achieve. CONSIDERING MY LOCATION The property faces east, which is wonderful for creating that light and breezy coastal feel. It also sits high on a hill, so in summer there is nothing between me and the blustery north-easterly winds that show up in the afternoon. Having lived in the property for nearly two years, I was fully aware of how exposed I am to the harsh rain, wind and salt. It’s fair to say, maintenance and durability were key factors when I started to consider doors, windows, cladding, external light Ƭttings etc. Having already fallen for the look of Linea weatherboard, it quickly became the obvious choice, as it isn’t prone to damage by moisture, termites and Ƭre, and resists Ʈaking, warping and swelling, so it doesn’t require annual touch-ups. I’m building my forever home, so selecting Ƭnishes that will stand the test of time was critically important. BUILDING MY HAMPTONS-INSPIRED DESIGN I’ve learned that one of the easiest ways to incorporate the Hamptons style is by adding whites and creams, with touches of blues in a range
of tones to oƪer contrast. Continuing colours between{the interior and exterior also adds a Ʈow that’s essential to creating the relaxed breezy charm of the coastal lifestyle. I recently met with Hamptons builder and interior designer Natalee Bowen, who has encyclopaedic knowledge when it comes to Hamptons-style homes, including colour schemes that work. Key points I took away were to paint the weatherboards in grey, white or taupe shades with white window trims and introduce a duck-egg blue and white colour scheme inside. I’m still playing with my exterior colour options and want to add splashes of colour to my living spaces through trimmings, furniture, soft furnishings and indoor plants. With any renovation that incorporates the classic Hamptons style, I’m Ƭnding that it’s all about attention to detail and a deƬned understanding of the look you’re trying to achieve. Staying true to your original vision will help you make the best decisions for your home. ai Schaưer’s heart has always been Ƭrmly rooted in the countryside. However, this New Zealander’s achievements and aspirations are very much big city. Based in south-east Queensland in the beautiful valley of Tallebudgera, Tai operates her international homewares brand, Bandhini, in a setting that could only be described as idyllic. Tai’s passion for good design that is also ethically and ecologically responsible can be attributed to decades of travel and living in countries where a healthy environment dictates wellbeing. When Tai and Andrew Zdanowicz — her equally talented designer partner — Ƭrst came across their hinterland property, a certain tree caught Tai’s eye. Fondly named Ralph, this beautiful 240-year-old western red cedar ironically survived due to asymmetry. Historically, the stunning native cedar trees were decimated on Australia’s east coast in the 1800s by the infamous “cedar getters”. But today, Ralph is the centrepiece of this beautiful, emerald-green piece of land — the base for Tai’s home and growing empire.

“For me, having the right environment means I can create in harmony” – Tai Schaffler “My overwhelming memory as a child was my grandparents’ country property in New Zealand,” she says. “There was a historic farmhouse and a beautiful oak tree there. They lived near a river and when I saw this property with Ralph and the creek, it immediately felt like home. For me, having the right environment means I can create in harmony.” Set down a beautiful country road, it’s easy to forget this property is headquarters for an international business. “The whole place here is designed to support a creative process,” adds Tai.

@home with the architect Photographer: Peter Bennetts
We all enjoy seeing architect-designed homes featured on shows and magazines, what about getting a ticket to visit one and experience the spaces yourself? Our “At Home with the Architect” series showcases an architect designed home every month. The house is open for one or two hours on the day and you can arrive and leave at your leisure. The architect and/or the owner will be there to show you through the house and to explain the design. This house in Castlecrag designed by Porebski Architects was one of the homes we opened in 2017. Subscribe to the “All About Architecture” e-Newsletter on our website and be one of the first to know about the next tour!

I love being surrounded by plants. Plants breathe life into your home. I like to pair them with hand-woven baskets and the vibrantly painted pots from our design label Martinich&Carran.

I can’t remember the Ƭrst time I understood painting but I can remember always loving it, both looking at paintings and painting them. The process of completing a painting is like a journey, therefore all other journeys you take, such as travel, relationships, learning, all combine to inform your work.
SurƬng is one of my passions. Surfboards are an art form that extends from this and the craft of hand-shaping a board is an art in itself. I’ve been enjoying riding Corey Graham’s boards for years now (probably time for a new one!).

I usually have several books on the go, for research or travelling the landscape of the imagination, such as Geoƪrey Maslen’s An Uncertain Future.
Noise-cancelling headphones are amazing, an essential item for travelling. I still love listening to music through headphones and these have a real depth to the quality of sound.
Australia is home to the most diverse and fascinating array of birds. Its abundant bird population is a direct reƮection of the country’s varied natural environment. As a subject matter for painting, birds provide an almost unlimited resource; their form and body language is so unique yet so recognisable, as seen in this beautiful shot of one of my favourites: a black-shouldered kite taken by Steven Castan (@estebanthenatureman).

Listening to podcasts in the car and studio is endlessly fascinating. Podcasts have a mysterious way of drawing you in and holding your attention. One of my go-tos is In our Time by Melvyn Bragg.

I’m a bit traditional in some regards; I like having a watch that tells the time and date and looks elegant and that’s all. I fell in love with Briston’s range, which do all of that really well.
New Zealand. I have included this vintage tourism poster of the Southern Alps because, even though I was born and raised in New Zealand, it has always maintained this dream-like quality to me. It’s where I developed my passion for the outdoors and I love returning to head oƪ into the hills, climbing and snowboarding, surƬng its isolated coastlines and spending time with friends and family.
Shoto handmade shoes are made from interesting, unique materials and are individually crafted.
