FRESH FUTURE This month, Home Journal celebrates its birthday, feting 38 years of epic homes in Hong Kong and around the world, invigorating design talent and spaces as diverse and unique as the lives that circulate within them. Our philosophical emphasis on personal style saturates every page as much as the stories of the personalities we feature. Thank you for reading the magazine – in a world where digital is at the forefront and everything on our devices literally refreshes in seconds, it is truly an honour to boast such longevity. If this bulkier issue is any indication, we have no intention of slowing down. International tastemaker Blue Carreon has guest-edited our Design section, paying homage to the grandeur of a bygone era with a visit to Chateau de Villette in Burgundy (Pg 93). He recommends the best design tomes to read this month (Pg 101) and converses with designer Ryan Korban (Pg 86), whose style sets the scene for the industry’s future. In our Homes section, we uncover ten exclusive residences. We are excited to unveil the colonial mansion of Cantopop star, Hins Cheung (Pg 118), who weaves a real-life fantasy in his home combining culture, art and historic beauty. We also feature the abodes of stylish personalities, Fanny Moizant (Pg 190), Amrita Khanna (Pg 148) and Victoria Allen (Pg 170) whose homes from Repulse Bay to Stanley prove to be ultimate treasures. Across the shores, we jet to Rome to admire the spectacular home of Anna Fendi (Pg 208) and visit India Hicks and her family’s slice of paradise in Oxfordshire (Pg 132). Ryan Korban broke out into the design scene with his singular brand of luxury, with a highly polished and tactile mix of Versailles meets modernism. In his world, intricate gilt mirrors and bronze figurative sculptures co-exist with linear sofas and geometric tables; zebra and peacock taxidermy with sculptural shagreen and parchment chairs; and plush silk curtains against graphic marble patterns. With his distinct eye and way with materials, he was soon designing stores for big name brands, most famously the Balenciaga and Alexander Wang stores in New York that became the very definition of sexy and cool. I naturally think without constraint – albeit, not always successfully. Yet whether it’s through colour palette, materials, architecture, or mood, I’m always trying to push things beyond the norm. Can I turn that flat ceiling into a curved one? Can I swathe this whole space in pink? Can we carve a couch out of marble? I have always loved the idea of environment and aesthetics. I just never knew you could make a living making things beautiful. Realising that was a real eye-opener for me and my career. 我熱愛環境與美學的概念。我從 不知道原來生活可以令事物變得美好。了解這道理後，對我個人和事業來 說也有如翻開新一頁。
I used to be a more-is-more kind of designer, by mixing layers and layers of accessories. I have evolved to become much more pared down. I’ve really edited my work over the years. My love for materials and architecture informs my style. I find so much creative inspiration from both. 我曾經是一 位認為愈豐富愈好的設計師，喜愛混搭不同層次和配飾。然後我慢慢轉變， 走向低調。多年來我認真重整自己的作品。對物料和建築的熱愛促成我今天 的風格。兩者讓我從中找到不少創作靈感。
As the industry evolves and heads into the future, I see it being much more supportive of youth and innovation. I see it becoming more democratic and I could not be happier about that. Because of its incredible history, Chateau de Villette in Burgundy has earned the moniker “Le Petit Versailles.“ The centuries-old estate, designed in the mid-17th century by Francois Mansart with construction overseen by his nephew and the chief architect of Louis XIV, Jules Hardoiun-Mansart, shares many similarities with what was once the royal residence of France’s ruling monarch: the abundance of limestone surfaces and façade details; the creation of a reception next to the main grand hall; and the transformation of bed chambers into apartments, via the additions of an antechamber, dressing room, and several alcoves. The gardens of Chateau de Villette are attributed to Andre Le Notre, who designed the oft-imitated gardens of Versailles – a central garden axis, intricate and symmetrical parterres dotted by conical topiaries, and a marble statuary can be found. The sprawling grounds, 75 hectares in all, feature a breathtaking cascade fountain, two lakes and an orangerie. Over the centuries, the chateau hosted notable figures. Two of its original inhabitants, the Marquis and Madame de Condorcet, entertained the brightest minds during the Age of Enlightenment, with guests including the Marquis de Lafayette, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Villette would change hands several times, too. Among the owners was Madame Pernod in 1936, widow of the Pernod Absinthe aperitif founder; in 1941 she sold it for cash to her son-in-law, Robert Gerard, who would devote his resources to its preservation and restoration even after parts of it were bombed during World War II. Upon Gerard's death in 1998, Villette was sold to Chinese-American luxury real estate entrepreneur Olivia Hsu Decker, whose tenure at the chateau was short-lived. However, she would occasionally rent out the palace as a movie location – you might have even seen it on the film adaptation of The Da Vinci Code. Today the owners of Villette are Sergei and Irina Bogdanov, who have carved out a name for themselves resurrecting forgotten estates to their former glory, like the Villa Astor in Sorrento and Villa Balbiano on Lake Como. The Bogdanovs have enlisted the help of interior designer Jacques Garcia, who himself is the owner of a majestic property called Le Chateau du Champ de Bataille. 94 | HO≤E JOURNAL | OCTOBER 2018

Sharing similarities with the Palace of Versailles, Chateau de Villette has become known as 'Le Petit Versailles', with resemblances extending from the gardens outside to the layout inside. 莊嚴華麗 能跟凡爾賽宮媲美的Villette 莊園素有「小凡爾賽宮」的 美譽，同樣擁有從花園延伸 到外圍的悅目空間。
DESIGN | SPACES In bringing Villette to the present, the new owners wanted to remain faithful to the architecture, preferring styles that were in vogue during the reigns of Louis XIV to Louis XVI. Decorating fashions come and go, they reasoned, but this grand style that befits the scale of the manor transcends time and trends. With that edict, Garcia – a master of the baroque and rococo styles – sought the finest furnishings that would best complement what was already in the chateau. Provenance was an important factor, with pieces from Versailles bought at auction. Among the French furniture are vases, jars and screens from the reign of China's Qianlong Emperor. After a six-year refresh, Villette is poised to serve its new owners. Room after room, from the grand salons to the bedrooms, are Bergere chairs, duchesse chaise longues, and canopy beds in rich silk jacquard. Gilt rococo carved mirrors and sconces can also be seen throughout. The true highlight of the chateau, however, is the dining room, said to be the first in France – and one of the finest examples of the decorative arts, featuring intricate rococo boiserie with blue tone-on-tone chinoiserie scenes painted in the 1700s. Chinoiserie, fantastical imaginings of the orient by French artists, became de rigeur in interior styling at the time. Taking cues from the Chinese sceneries encased in the carved frames, Garcia had the dining room painted in pale blue, contrasting delicately against the plaster-like woodwork. While Chateau de Villette remains a private home, the Bogdanovs have opened it up to those who want to rent it for special events like weddings and conferences. Should your heart desire, it's a special place to live out your Marie Antoinette fantasies. //

Thomas built a companion structure to his home which he has called The Academy. There’s a peculiar parcel of land on the windward side of Hong Kong Island’s western edge, under the gaze of Victoria Peak and above the coruscating expanse of the South China Sea that, while only a stone’s throw from a major thoroughfare, seems to have slipped the grasp of time. On it stands a stately mansion, white-washed and resplendent in the afternoon sun, and within it lives a man, slim and elfin, a modern-day Peter Pan presiding over this stowaway realm. At first glance, the existence of such a pristinely preserved colonial-era estate seems a bit far-fetched in the midst of Hong Kong’s unrelenting modernity, and the identity of its inhabitant only serves to further exacerbate this strangeness: Hins Cheung, Cantopop star and darling of the local media, whose celebrity profile is at odds with, at least, this writer’s own assumption of the intensely private, slightly eccentric and moneyed heir that might have easily lived in this home instead. 香港島西邊一處迎風之地暗藏玄機——就在太平山頂之下，光芒閃耀的南中國海之 上，與鬧市大街僅咫尺之遙，屹立著一幢彷彿逃過了時日洗禮的宏偉莊園，其刷白外牆在 午後陽光中煥發魅力。這座隱身淨土之上的大宅中，住著一位長相秀氣的男主人，一位有 如「現代版小飛俠」的才子。 霎眼看去，這座獲悉心保育的殖民時期物業跟瞬息萬變的現代化香港有如兩碼子的 事，大宅主人的身分——事業璀璨絢麗的粵語流行音樂歌手兼本地傳媒寵兒張敬軒(Hins Cheung)——更令筆者大感意外，畢竟能在此從容自在生活的多半是極注重私隱、不拘一 格的富家後代。 幸好，這位下年二月迎接38歲生辰的歌手是多麼熱情澎湃，親切仁厚，由他來接手 託管這片曾於兩次世界大戰時期充當城中上流社會聚會的莊嚴重地，委實最適合不過。

HOMES | POK FU LAM Thankfully, the singer, who turns 38 next February, is effusive and gracious, a suitable steward to a heritage home that once served as a venerable gathering place for the city’s upper crust between the two World Wars. Stories have been woven into the being of the house since it was built in 1926, beginning with its name: Old Alberose, a portmanteau of the names of Albert Weill, a French Jew who managed the Sennet Freres jewellery and watch company, and his wife Rosie, the polyglot matriarch who spoke four languages, including Cantonese. The couple and their four children would frequently play host to expatriate high society, mixing in the same circles as the Sassoon family, otherwise known as ‘the Rothschilds of the East.’ The Weills also hosted many travelling writers – among them, Ellen Field, a British writer and wartime heroine who wrote in her 1960 memoir, Twilight in Hong Kong: “They had a sumptuous home, with furnishings in exquisite taste, their servants had remained with them throughout. Grandmother Weill, elegant and gracious, always made me think of a ‘grande dame’ – a French countess ruling in her chateau. When we went, we were always invited to spend the whole weekend with them. We found it heavenly.” Today, Old Alberose still retains much of its former glory, thanks in large part to the protection given by its landlord – the University of Hong Kong, which bought the property in 1955 – and Hins’ near-obsessive chronicling of the home’s many tales since he moved in last September. “Before moving here, I brought some roses to visit the Weills’ graves, and told them that I would take care of the place,” he tells us. “When you move into a heritage home, you’ll naturally want to find out about the characters who lived here before, and what happened to them, or what they experienced.” Indeed, Hins has always felt a special bond with his homes, most of all his last residence in Felix Villas – a row of colonial townhouses a five-minute drive away from Alberose, also built in the 1920s and owned by HKU – to which he dedicated a five-track EP of romantic ballads in 2015. “Over there, I feel like I had an affair with the house. Yet, while his two-year stint in Felix might be equated to an emotionally charged yet rocky dalliance – not least due to the abode’s alienating size and a certain spooky spectral presence that kept Hins up at night – the Guangzhou native seems to have settled into a more nurturing, reciprocal relationship at Alberose. For starters, the size and layout of the floor plan is more logical and, as a result, useable, which he attributes to the more grounded approach of the British architectural firm that designed it. The rich history of Alberose and the colourful family that inhabited it – in contrast to Felix Villas, which was purpose-built as a rental property – has also enthralled Hins, who made a covenant with HKU to study the house in minute detail during his residency, frequently updating its Estates Office on any new discoveries he makes. Dressed in regal Dolce & Gabbana silk pyjamas, Hins proves himself to be a consummate historian as he walks us through the house; his fervour for its heritage, and the antique appointments that he has decorated the rooms with, is palpable. Explaining his penchant for history, Hins says, "In studying this house, I want to learn about how people lived during that era, since their actions still influence us to this day." 古今互通

the Carlton House desk from the turn of the 20th century; a vibrant, plant-dyed, century-old Iranian rug that took 11 years to hand-stitch; and a religious 18th-century oil painting bought at a Sotheby’s auction that hangs above the sitting room. He also points out, with particular pride, the lovingly restored original sliding doors separating the living and dining rooms that feature hand-carved crystal glass panes. Despite the effervescent air of a new romance, Hins admits that the relationship is not an easy one by any means. “Many people can actually afford these heritage properties in Hong Kong, but not everyone wants to live in them. They’re like jewels – if you’re paying such expensive rent, you could easily live in a much nicer place in Central. If something breaks here, you can’t just replace it with something new.” But, he says, “if the Weills are looking down from heaven, I think they would really appreciate what I’ve done. Even building this house today would be no small feat.” As Hins has left his mark on Old Alberose, so has the house left its mark on him. These days, he says, he has started writing letters by hand and spends more time on self-reflection, such is the effect of a place that has seen so many lives played out within its walls. He has also reached out to the Weills’ descendants, in the hope of telling them all that he’s learned about their experiences, although he still has yet to receive a response. “Maybe I’ll create an album to remember this place by, like I did at Felix,” Hins offers as a parting thought. “I don’t feel like the owner of this house, just an observer of its history. That’s why in the entrance hall, I’ve framed two pocket watches that Rosie and Albert once owned, to remember them by – and to let visitors know that this house will always belong to them.” //

Oh to be India Hicks! What’s there not to envy? The aristocratic family tree. The creative bloodline. The model-good looks. The thriving business that also empowers women entrepreneurs. The idyllic home on Harbour Island. The loving family of seven. India makes for a strong case for having it all – and for doing it all with a certain flair. Adding to the growing enviable list is her new country home in England, which she and her partner David Flint have lovingly called America Farm. After years of living a haute bohemian lifestyle on the pink sand beaches of the Bahamas, India and David decided that they wanted their five children to develop a better affinity to their British heritage. Decades of barefoot walks on the beach, climbing coconut trees and pirate games needed to heed to more Anglo-centric pastimes, so they set out to build their home. “India was lucky enough to have some farmland near her mother (in Oxfordshire), at the edge of the village where our boys had been christened. We had permission from the authorities to take down two 1970s farm workers’ cottages and build our idea of a house, with a small garden alongside large fields,” writes David in India's book, A Slice of England. of Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India – she can trace her family lineage all the way to Queen Victoria, and had traveled the world as lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth. India's father was decorating genius David Hicks, making her a true blueblood in the royal and design sense and an authority by birthright on all manners of style and interior design. India grew up with transportive tented rooms and riotous colors and patterns, which in her father’s capable hands worked magic and have become totems of interior design. “It did not occur to me as a child that other people did not grow up eating breakfast in tented rooms of geometric fabric, in vibrating color schemes, or that you painted your swimming pool black to add drama, or had golden pheasants as pets,” recalls India. Through her father, she learned invaluable lessons on decorating, and much of it has stayed with her, which she continues to deploy when needed. Although she is the first to admit that she isn’t nearly as fearless, “I certainly can’t resist a pop of crimson or shocking pink!” In building their home, lessons from her father were coupled with the couple’s wish list. “India and I both wanted something traditional, probably white stucco, a cross between a Danish farmhouse and a Georgian rectory,” wrote David. Throughout the building and design process, creative and practical disagreements are bound to happen, and the Hicks-Flint household was not immune to such predicaments. “Compromise with David was the biggest challenge!" says India. ”My mother reminded me how she sat quietly on the sofa reading while my father, like a whirling dervish, created homes all around her. David and I both wanted to make the decisions and they were not always the same.” America Farm is their labour of love, a bucolic English manor hyphenated with contemporary comforts such as under floor heating, which India describes as “heaven.” There is an open plan kitchen, making entertaining a breeze, and the rooms are furnished with pieces both inherited and collected over the years. As is so often the case in Hong Kong, Melanie McLaren and her husband, James, spent every weekend for months looking for the right rental apartment. But when they saw their current abode on Old Peak Road, they knew that is was just right. “It was the perfect location. We can walk to Central, but also to the Zoological and Botanical Gardens, and straight up The Peak from outside the door.” Aside from that, the four-bedroom duplex offered ample space for what was then a growing family – and they were given the opportunity to make it somewhat their own, which is not always the case when renting. “The flat was overstuffed with furniture and had dark walls in the main living areas,” says Melanie. “The master bedroom was also wallpapered entirely with a pattern of giant dogs.” Things have certainly changed. “We were fortunate that the owners agreed to renovate to a high standard. We have a lot of art and were keen for the walls in particular to be a blank canvas.” Art has long played a role in the lives of both Melanie and James. Highlights in the couple’s collection include a bronze sculpture by Giancarlo Tramontin, which stands on the windowsill in the master bedroom upstairs, and a wooden camel picked up on honeymoon in South Africa. The 3,700sqft flat spans two floors with a study, kitchen, bathroom, laundry and living/dining area downstairs, and four bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as a storage room upstairs. An open staircase lends the apartment a lovely feeling of space, further accentuated by the beautiful curved windows both downstairs and up.

Aside from the contemporary art, there is a mid-century modern aesthetic throughout, with a mix of vintage furniture collected over the years. The couple have collected pieces while travelling in Australia and the UK, and also have a couple of chairs from Africa. Hong Kong has played a role, too, with vintage European dining chairs and a cocktail trolley, as well as a Matthew Hilton desk, sourced from Lane Crawford, while the wall display cabinet in the sitting area was custom made in a replica of an original piece found by Jing Meng, founder and owner of Hong Kong vintage furniture store Common Room. While the children – a toddler and a newborn – have their own space, its design is consistent with the rest of the apartment. “For the children’s area we wanted to keep things clean and bright to make it somewhere that they would feel at home, but also with a hint of the look we have across the rest of the flat, so we have tried to include at least one piece of furniture in their spaces which fits the general look of the entire flat,” adds Melanie. The couple has made the Hong Kong apartment their own, allowing their art to shine alongside a feeling of airiness and space. “I absolutely love the curved windows. They add character and make the house feel incredibly light. They look out onto both green and city views, which I think really capture what is best about Hong Kong.”//

As a doting mother to three boys and one of the city’s rising talents in interior design, one has to wonder how Amrita Khanna manages to juggle her career with her personal life so gracefully. This is the first impression that strikes us upon entering her spacious open plan living and dining room. Boasting panoramic views, different areas flow fluidly, contrasting and complementing each other with her thoughtful curation of furnishings and accessories that work well to represent her heritage. She explains, “Many factors have impacted the style of this home: growing up in Kuwait, being of Indian origin and the influence of my parents who were both patrons of the arts and had a great eye.” Most importantly, Amrita credits her artist mother’s innate talent, “She had an inspiring art studio on the top floor of our home where she created her beautiful canvases that told her story of the different stages and influences of her life.” Her mother, Veena Mohan's works can be found throughout the Khanna residence, each piece glorious in colour compostion and rich in meaning, such as the oversized artwork in the dining room that speaks volumes. Stunning hues of blue, ivory and ochre, together with pops of red, create the canvas that tells the story of the peace that came after the war in Kuwait. Amrita reminisces, “This was a very difficult time for us as a family as we had to leave our home without having any idea of what the future had in store.” From this, the designer has created the palette for the rest of the home – mixing and matching Persian silk carpets with neutral, contemporary colours in upholstery and furniture that fit beautifully with the prominent showcased artwork. “Apart from my mom’s pieces, we have collected art from established Indian artists such as F.N. Souza, T. Vaikuntham, Paresh Maity, Sujatha Bajaj and Laxma Goud,” Amrita shares. “These pieces dictate the mood of our home.” The designer loves to experiment with fabrics often, reupholstering chairs and cushions to change the look. Her dining table is dressed to impress for our visit, with silver settings elevating the wooden furniture and filled with exquisite Indian cuisine. The silverware was gifted from her father to each member of the family, of which Amrita explains, “He loved being together as a family, eating together and enjoying fine things. Our guests always embrace the experience of eating an authentic Indian meal in silver thali.”

This conscientious mother has also taken care to consider the needs and opinions of her toughest clients – her children. “Their personalities definitely influenced their rooms,” she shares. “The oldest is passionate about music but we’ve tried to give his space a more vintage feel with the rosewood bed which belonged to my great grandparents, and a rug from Turkey that is 100 years old. The younger two had their own views too since they needed to share their room – they wanted bunk beds (but both wanted the top bunk), room to play when their friends came, and lots of individual space to store their toys and books,” she recalls. She took it into her hands to design the custom double-bunk bed made from Red Cabinet (engraved with their names), which is the perfect solution. More than just an art and design gallery, Casa Canvas (near Milan) is also the home of Thayse Viégas. It’s inspired by a blank canvas, where anything can happen and anyone is free to leave their mark – whether that’s an artist with their unique work, a designer with their latest project or a visitor with their lasting memories. Viégas was born in the northern Brazilian city of Belém, but as a youth she lived in Rio de Janeiro. She graduated with a degree in social communication and began her career in the world of cinema as a set and costume designer. Her decision to move to Italy coincided with plans to enrol in a master’s degree in fashion design. She worked for a few years as a buyer, collaborating with some important names in Milan; gradually, she focused her interest on art and furnishings, creating a rather unusual formula for her space. “In Brazil, we are used to trying out collective experiences, while in Italy I have noticed a more closed approach,” says Viégas. “What I wanted to create with this gallery was a moment of sharing and collaboration, along with different creative situations in the design, art and craftsmanship fields. “It wasn’t me finding this extraordinary location; on the contrary, it chose me,” she adds. “I love big cities and I’m a rather urban person, so I would have never thought I could live in a small village, especially in a space where nature is so important.” The house-gallery occupies a part of the ground floor of the beautiful Villa Stanga Busca Borromeo in Carate Brianza, in an area not far from Milan that was once a holiday resort and is today known for its globally renowned manufacturers of design furniture. This is the ornate set on which Viégas simultaneously lives and works, where she showcases the works of established and emerging artists and designers from around the world, including France’s Sam Baron, the Italian-Greek duo Ctrlzak and Brazil’s Gustavo Martini. “I like to mix things – after all, this has always been my inclination since school, when I designed a concept store linking art, fashion and furniture for my thesis,” explains Viégas. In Casa Canvas, she exhibits artists who first and foremost move her – in essence, artworks that she wants to live with. She then combines them with modern furniture from the 1950s to the ’70s, especially Italian pieces, and creations that she personally signs, including a collection of porcelain that combines artisan techniques and digital processes, ironically quoting the great icons of painting. “This place has changed me,” professes Viégas. “My previous work as a buyer forced me into a frenetic pace; I was always a victim of trends and seasons. Here, I've slowed down. I continue to be in touch with all the news that is happening, but I buy modernist pieces and works of art without feeling as tense as before. Around June every year, scores of people make their way to Stanley Main Beach in celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival. From Hoi Fung Path down to the shore, the beach pulses with energy, the sand barely visible under tents, jersey-clad paddlers, sun-drenched spectators, and narrow boats being loaded. Horns strike the air, commencing races. Grunts from boats erupt on the water, while beachside, supporters cheer. With festivities in full swing, the beach roars with life. On this sunny September morning, however, up behind Main Beach, past a curious white wall through to the rooftop of a three-storey home, there are no cheering crowds, no blaring horns, no speeding boats cutting like blade through the blue. The Tai Tam horizon is still. Through the pergola, slants of light paint the couches, from which one is blessed with a pretty vantage point of the bay. It’s not unlike lazing cosily in a resort by the Mediterranean coast. “I was going for an Australian beach house – to have the windows opened up and everything be very simple,” says homeowner Victoria Allen. “It feels big, but that's not actually the case. With the size of the living room, you can’t fit that much furniture in.” She’s right – the space feels anything but small. The second floor’s white walls, livened up by frames of blown-up photographs and paintings, create a sense of roominess. Edge-to-edge windows invite the outdoors in, and by framing the horizon, they further create the illusion of expansiveness. Originally occupied by bedrooms and a bathroom, Victoria has purposefully transformed the second level into an open living-dining area to connect to the rooftop. “I wanted to make sure the roof was really useable, and it made more sense for it to be by the kitchen. If the living room was downstairs, you’d never go up and use the roof. So I reversed the house,” she says. A native of Western Australia, Allen moved to Hong Kong in 1997. Four years later she started Habitat Property, and eventually had this house listed. “I kept showing it to clients, and no one liked it. They thought it was too expensive,” she says. As Allen made frequent trips between the house

and her then-residence in Mid-Levels, she realised the half-hour distance from Central – also where the Habitat office is located – wasn’t so bad. “Then one day I thought, I was here so much, showing the house to other people – maybe I’d buy it.” She eventually did – initially as an investment property, then ultimately as a home for the family. The house today is the result of a year-long renovation, completed with the help of interior designer Alec Stuart of Alexander Stuart Designs. “He was very good at it – I had a very clear idea for the house and what I wanted, and he really just helped me execute,” she says. “It needed a big renovation. We had tiny windows up here and funny windows downstairs, and the whole place was brown. And there was a really bad spa bath on the roof – so we gutted the whole place and opened it all up.” Now, through the house’s many windows, views of the bay and surrounding hills and old buildings float into the home, bringing with them a uniquely local, beachside feel. Pieces from Victoria’s art collection pepper walls and landings, sourced from around the world by way of galleries in London to artists on Instagram, to (as in the case of sculptures and framed drawings in the master’s bedroom) her very own sons. Downstairs, on the ground level, high ceilings from what used to be the living room benefit the children’s and master bedrooms instead, the latter a loft-like dwelling. Intelligently laid out, the room designates space to a vanity corner, complete with his-and-hers sinks, a walk-in closet, a hidden toilet, and the shower area, perhaps the crux of the home. Previously an outside stairwell, the shower extension boasts an equally high ceiling – and skylights, allowing the home’s dwellers to bathe under the sky in luxury, rain 174 | HO≤E JOURNAL | OCTOBER 2018

or shine. A sliding door demarcates the bedroom from the vanity and shower areas; by night, it can be closed for a sense of privacy. By day, opening it up doubles the size of the room. Just outside the master’s bedroom, a small patio is home to a sitting area, gently surrounded by plantation. There, one might feel as though they were in a private garden, removed from what, around the time of June, is a festive celebration with blaring drums, boats, and paddles beating furiously against water. It’s not surprising that a homely haven like this exists; it's surprising that it sits untouched in the middle of the action, a building by a white wall unseen to the crowds that gather regularly. The beautiful pastel yellow home on the coast stands out for its homeliness and warmth. 原始自然 這所淡粉黃色的美麗家園散發 著溫暖舒適的氛圍。
On the seafront in North Norfolk, a pastel yellow abode stands out from the crowd of shoreline properties. With a pier-side setting, in its earliest days it was a Victorian bathhouse where the gentry came to soothe their bodies in warm seawater. Later it became a pub, but fell into disrepair and went into liquidation. It was at this point that Anji Connell and her husband, Barry, who are based mainly in Hong Kong but who also had a Norfolk flat where they spent weekends away from their London home, came to the rescue. The year was 1999 and having purchased the former pub at auction, the couple had ambitions to turn the stunningly located, sizeable property into a chic boutique hotel. Anji, an interior designer by trade, would be in charge of the design, while Barry was ready to take the helm as chef, having completed a one-year professional chef’s course at the Ritz Escoffier School in Paris for the purpose. However, what began as a 24-week renovation turned into a three-year project. Damp had taken hold and mushrooms were growing from the walls; extensive work was required. External walls and floors were replaced and the layout transformed from nine bedrooms to four, all upstairs and sea-facing with en suite bathrooms, including a master suite with an attached sitting room and dressing area. The plan to call the property home took over from the idea of a hotel, even if elements of the original design remained, including the upstairs cinema room, and spa featuring a 當你走到北諾福克的海濱，你會發現柔和自然的粉黃色宅舍在密集房屋之中脫穎而出，動人畫 面隨即映入眼簾。 歸因於坐落碼頭附近的地理優勢，物業初期主要用作為接待名流雅士的維多利亞 式浴場，沐浴於溫暖海水，放鬆身心。時代轉變，這個空間演變成為酒吧。可惜疏於管理，最後落 得清盤的下場。就在此時，長駐香港的Anji Connell和她丈夫Barry剛好從倫敦走到諾福克暫待一個 週末，恰好遇到這個充滿故事性的家居，自然而然開展了一場別開生面的「救援行動」。 1999年，夫婦兩人於一場拍賣活動成功購入原為酒吧的物業。自此之後，他們以重新裝修為 目標，熱切期待地將位置絕佳的龐大空間變做時尚優雅的精品酒店。室內設計師Anji負責處理室內 裝潢，而曾於巴黎麗茲埃科菲烹飪學校修讀一年專業烹飪課程的Barry更準備擔當主廚的重任。然 而，原為24星期的工程因各種因素延期，整整花費三年時間才完工。期間，潮濕情況變得嚴重、牆 壁更長出蘑菇，大規模的翻修工程首當其衝。舉例來說，外牆和地板現已重新鋪設，整體佈局也面 目全非。原來的九間睡房改裝成為面向海景的四間頂層套房浴室，其中主人房間內設有客廳和化妝

The downstairs of the 5,500-square-foot property was initially designed for guest living and dining, with a kitchen at the back. From texture to pattern to colour, design elements around the home hark back to the sea nearby, as well as the building's 1850 origins as a Victorian spa. 海邊歷史 不論是面材質感、圖紋裝飾、 顏色組合或設計裝置，均完美 展現了1850年代維多利亞浴場 建築的特色。
The interior design brings in the blues of the sea that lies just feet away, but also adds striking red and bright pink hues, ensuring a bold interior that nevertheless remains warm and welcoming. The vibrant vibe is further enhanced by Chinese artworks that hark back to the couple’s Hong Kong background. A porthole window in the kitchen adds a nautical element to the seaside home. “I wanted it to be a complete getaway where you could chill out, warm and cosy, with everything you needed – saunas, steam baths, the ability to help yourself to wine and delicious food from the upstairs pantry adjoining the cinema, and in the summer to be all open to sea and sky,” says Anji of the feel the couple were striving for. The luxurious baths are certainly a highlight. A stainless steel bathtub in one bedroom is crafted from one complete piece of steel by a submarine manufacturing company, while the bright red bathtub in the master suite was made by Finnish brand, Durat, from recycled plastic. with its name, The Bath House,” says Anji. They reflect the building’s 1850 origins as a Victorian spa and bring a new bathing element to the property, particularly as the original pump used to transport seawater to its Victorian baths was too rusty to be saved during the renovation. However, the best thing about the Norfolk property is the views. “It’s amazing lying in bed and all you see is the sea. It makes it very difficult to leave it!“ says Anji. The couple spend around three months of the year in Norfolk, and approximately three months each in their homes in Hong Kong, South Africa and London, with some time for travel, too. “Design-wise, Norfolk is the polar opposite of my Hong Kong home, which is sleek and minimal with lots of concrete, metal and glass,” says Anji. South Africa is “uncluttered, inviting, comfortable; London is more modern eclectic.” And Norfolk? It has turned out to be the most “homely” of all. //

The sea has always had an outsized presence in Fanny Moizant’s life. Growing up in the idyllic seaside town of Marseillan in the south of France (which The Guardian once likened to ‘St Tropez before Brigitte Bardot’), she would, on her way home, pause briefly at the innermost end of the port, at Place Noilly, to gaze out past the boats lined up perfectly, towards the Bassin de Thau lagoon and the sandbar separating it from the Mediterranean Sea beyond. That same view has followed her halfway around the world to Hong Kong in the form of a “naïve portrait” of her hometown that she once picked up at a market stall, yet it now finds itself competing for Fanny’s attention with the breathtaking coastal vista of the South China Sea from her current abode high above Repulse Bay, in the concave architectural wonder that is The Lily. “When we first arrived in Hong Kong, we were having a hard time choosing between the city or the Southside,” Fanny recounts. “But when we arrived here and saw the view, we made our minds. The morning of our visit is dry, balmy and positively Mediterranean, and the Frenchwoman seems immersed in her element, padding around the 2,600sqft apartment in tousled hair and a Breton striped shirt, which had been effortlessly tucked into form-fitting black jeans. Her reputation precedes her: as co-founder and public face of her nine-year-old luxury consignment e-commerce website, Vestiaire Collective (which, with US$130 million in total funding, is one of the most-funded resale startups in existence), Fanny oversees its 7 million-strong online community spread across 47 countries, and heads offices in Paris, London, Berlin, Milan, New York and, with her most recent move, Hong Kong, as part of a push into Greater China. As a symbol of the company’s commitment to the Chinese market, Fanny went so far as to name her intensely curious and somewhat fearsome year-old British shorthair Baidu, after China’s largest web search engine. With so much on her plate, Fanny’s home is her designated oasis for family time. “Because we’re quite busy and I travel a lot with my husband, we tend to spend more time with the girls when we’re back,” she says. Her other passion for art is expressed in her collection hung (or nonchalantly propped up on stacks of old Vogue issues) throughout the apartment. There’s the calligraphic ‘Outrenoire’ (or ‘beyond black’) compositions of her favourite French artist, Pierre Soulages; whimsical paintings of Shanghainese barbers and foot massage parlours by her friend, the artist André Cervera; a framed photo taken by Chinese-Australian star blogger Margaret Zhang; and an eye-catching, peppermint green print of British punk rock band The Clash’s seminal 1980 album, London Calling – a birthday gift from her husband from when they lived in the English capital’s Camden neighbourhood. These intermingle with reminders of Fanny’s French roots. Beside the front door, a sizeable vintage chest of drawers from the south of France, once used in a barber shop to store the effects of regular clients, is used today to hide miscellaneous objects; while a metallic canister in an opposite corner of the living room reveals itself to be a spent artillery shell from the First World War, featuring an engraving by her husband’s grandfather commemorating the battle that he witnessed: Verdun, 1916. True to Fanny’s friendly yet straightforward demeanour, her home is simultaneously functional and beautiful. “In fashion, I love mixing more designer pieces with vintage ones, finding the right balance,” she says. “The rules I apply to my wardrobe are the same I apply to my house: it needs to be simple but also convenient to live in. I would hate to live in a museum where you can’t touch anything, especially when I have little kids and a wild cat!” Fanny moves on to explain the presence of three ancient wooden rods bearing a series of shallow circular carvings, resting in a clear glass jar near her kitchen – tools that the fishermen of her hometown’s lagoon would glue mussels to decades ago, before plunging them into the sea bed to allow the shellfish to grow. They have followed Fanny’s many moves across the globe, now finding use as metaphorical support beams with which to ground her family in foreign soil – in time, it seems, they’ll find their way from this sea to another altogether more familiar body of water, somewhere under the balmy Mediterranean sun. //

The compact room is possibly the smallest in the entire apartment. Fabric coverings outfit the walls and, circling to the not-so-distant other end, one’s gaze rests on the pièce de résistance of this enigmatic, though elegant, den: a collection of Kellys and Birkins, one in each colour and one to a row (save for a matching pair side by side) sits on display in a glass case. All mystery surrounding the passcode-enabled access door is dispelled. Next to it, Lily Wong, interior design director at Lusso Design, dials open two gilded closets, and with a click, minks from Valentino, Balmain et al. appear in a neat row. On the sofa – a light butterscotch leather number from Ligne Roset – teddy bears sit with their price tags still on. It’s nothing if not a warmup to the rest of the house. Thanks to the reflective ceiling – so polished it mimics the glassy surface of water – and expansive vistas of greenery, the city, and Victoria Harbour beyond, the already-massive room swells even more. The Home Journal crew is convinced: with a home gym like this, we’d be pouncing out of bed daily for a workout. The homeowners are a health-conscious couple, says Lily. “They wanted a private gym with fitness equipment completely their own, and that was suitable for them,” she explains. “So they bought the 3,000sqft apartment as their home gym.” The Broadview Villas unit comes with a master bedroom, guest bedroom, two maid’s bedrooms, a master bathroom, two guest bathrooms, one lavatory, and one maid’s bathroom. real estate – given the elaborate attention paid to ensure every idle surface and corner of the abode is spared no expense. The living room, demarcated by a divider with a curved-screen television on one side and mirrors for the gym on the other, doubles as a luxe lounge, plush with a leather sofa and cushions from Fendi. A swivel armchair from Minotti, along with coffee tables and side tables, sit snug within the remaining space. Surfaces of mirror and glass lend one another their glimmer under the sculptural, ropey chandelier, a beauty of twists and turns. Reminiscent of a ritzy hotel suite, the master bedroom boasts a Lancaster bed with custom-designed bedside tables and a headboard by Bentley. The window, lining the length of the room, treats dwellers to the same sweeping views from the gym area, the Hong Kong Stadium’s curved white shells cutting through the green. Here, a few taps on the smartphone gently shrouds the room from light, commanding the curtains to close by way of the same intelligent Lutron system operating the home’s lighting. Instantly, day turns to night in this luxurious enclave. Having worked with the homeowners on projects spanning offices and retail, Lily and her team were no strangers to the challenge at hand, likely only eclipsed by the resources available to make things happen. “Our clients have completely trusted us with the flat’s design and renovation,” says Lily. “They didn’t interfere with our creative space, allowing us more freedom to design.” In all of the glass and bling, the passcode-automated doors and state-of-the-art personal gym, such freedom – offered and received – is perhaps the greatest luxury of them all. // 206 | HO≤E JOURNAL | OCTOBER 2018

I first met Anna Fendi in the ’70s with her mother Adele and her sisters Paola, Carla, Franca and Alda, with whom she created an empire – and we have been fast friends ever since. On our visit to her luxurious home, she receives us with the warmth and grace that distinguish her in this brand-new Roman pied-à-terre, ensconced in an elegant 1930s building with the archetypical romantic courtyard and a breathtaking view over the Eternal City. Honoured as a Cavaliere di Gran Croce, the first Italian woman to receive the prestigious award, Anna Fendi is also an IWF Hall of Fame member and the first woman awarded the exclusive Fuoriclasse Castagner Prize. As the creative director of the Fendi brand, she introduces us proudly to her new abode, where one can feel the past, present and future. Sketches by Karl Lagerfeld, fur shawls scattered here and there with great elegance, furniture designed or revisited by her, pictures of the many actresses she dressed for Oscar-winning movies… talk about the queen of fashion. On this subject, she shocks me with an unexpected confession: “As a young girl, with a passion for classical dance, I simply hated fashion. But realising I had no alternative and following my mother’s motto – ‘Be always as the fingers of one hand, different but absolutely complementary’ – I immersed myself in the fashion world with creativity, rigour, discipline and sacrifice in order to achieve the many goals we have been able to conquer.”

In fact, she renovated and decorated her new house by herself. “After Fendi became a global luxury fashion brand as a member of the LVMH Group, I dedicated myself to my other great passion: scouting relentlessly for amazing residences in the most charming environments to renovate and decorate for my daughters and myself,” she explains. “It was also great fun to transform a fabulous art nouveau mansion alongside the Tiber River into Villa Laetitia, an exclusive hotel and restaurant that’s an ideal location for important events, as well as a Villa Laetitia bed-andbreakfast on the island of Ponza. It’s a locale I love so much – and where I built houses for my daughters Silvia, Ilaria and Maria Teresa, and myself.” The 85-year-old entrepreneur hasn’t stopped creating projects, either. Most recently, she handled the interior design of a special edition yacht in the Invictus yard, in collaboration with Italian yacht designer Christian Grande. From her abode in the heart of Rome, she also runs AFV (Anna Fendi Vini) with Giuseppe Tedesco, her life companion. Of AFV, she explains: “I wanted to personalise them with unusual names such as Flanella, Plissè Soleil or Negligè – all tributes to my legacy of a life in fashion. in porcelain inspired by geometry, as well as glass vases and objects in Murano glass; it’s my latest creation, of which I am very proud.” The charming entrance of the house is decorated with sculptures by Oliviero Rainaldi, Andrea Cascella and Oliviero Manca. “I always decorate my residences with my favourite artists and unusual pieces,” she explains. “Like the 19th-century teapots I’ve been collecting all my life, proudly displayed in the old family library; or the mosaic portrait of Guglielmo Marconi, inventor of the radio, found at a bric-à-brac shop in Venice.” In the spacious living room, circular-shaped sofas adapt to the two libraries, while old armchairs recycled from other houses are upholstered with blue-grey velvet, as are a coffee table and chairs from her mother’s house. The effect is that of a very cosy corner that’s ideal to admire the majestic views of Saint Peter’s Basilica and other Roman treasures. “Every object in my house has a story; it’s what I like the most,” she says. “I made the patchwork cover over the sofa with remnants of vair fur, and the black-panther pillows on the sofas come from a discontinued fur coat of a client in respect of animal rights. I bought the Austrian table during a trip to Vienna, along with the chequerboard, as well as the 45 and 78 RPM records that I go around searching for in the flea markets to play on the old Plexiglas record player, which reminds me of the beloved old times. the Florentine antique dealer Giovanni Bruzzichelli, follow me in all my houses. I believe they bring me good luck. The patchwork jute rug is my homage to [Alberto] Burri, an artist who I love very deeply.” Celotex decorates the wing that separates the living room from the dining room, along with an early-period Mario Ceroli and an Andy Warhol on ceramic. The dining room is unmistakeably representative of her world, as suggested by her latest collections. “I wanted to create a retro atmosphere, so I chose an oval crystal and mirror table, and I upholstered deco chairs in black leather with abstract motifs,” she says. “I am very proud of my Géométrie total-black plates and my Romeo and Juliet double-use reversible Murano flutes, executed with an antique technique dating from the 18th century. Every day, I love preparing the table with a different pièce de résistance from my collection.” A deco console, two mirrors by Michelangelo Pistoletto and Giulio Paolini, two sconces with the fasce symbol discovered at a junk dealer and the showcases full of crystals – these all contribute to an incredible atmosphere. tiles on the walls, an original floor from the ’30s and an old clock from an Austrian bell tower. “I wanted to go on with the same feelings in the bathroom – of course, strictly black-and-white,” she says. “I chose refurbished broken marble for the floor, chairs and sconces, vintage for the old tub, with fittings painted in black and the oeil-de-boeuf, with which I decorated a closet.” Lastly, the lounge is an essential room that she dedicates to relaxation. To create a very intimate feeling, windows are used instead of conventional closets. All faucets use state-of-the-art GROHE cartridge technology and have integrated jet regulators to ensure a constant and flat flow of water. The sight of Victoria Harbour is often interchangeable with the concept of Hong Kong itself – while the formidable profile of the Peak stands sentinel through the ages, the city below it shifts and expands, absorbing the new while remaining, irrefutably, itself. The same can be said of a culinary institution that stands on the harbour’s shores, gazing out at maritime comings and goings from a new perch within the InterContinental Hong Kong. First opened in 1984, Yan Toh Heen has raised Cantonese cuisine to new heights over its lifetime with its two Michelin stars and, much like the cityscape, has adapted to novel influences while remaining true to its core. Its latest adaptation has been a particularly important one. Ahead of the InterContinental’s upcoming year-long refurbishment (due to begin in 2020, whereupon the hotel will re-emerge as The Regent Hong Kong), Yan Toh Heen took up residence in a prime harbourside space in newly redecorated quarters courtesy of CAP-ATELIER. Headed by interior designer Henry Leung, who was responsible for the restaurant’s last renovation in 2013, the creative outfit elevated the surroundings this time with a deference to rarefied Chinese materials and craftsmanship. Speaking on the theme of the new design, the InterContinental’s communications director Carole Klein says: “Imagine a jade jewellery box that opens up to uncover all kinds of treasures. There’s discoveries to be made wherever you look, and collectibles and culinary treasures in every corner.” Diners must first pass through a transportive corridor featuring full-height jade resin walls with shan shui carvings depicting the seascape around Victoria Harbour, before arriving at a sculptural porcelain centrepiece by New York-based ceramic artist Sin-ying Ho. From there, they enter the main dining room: a hushed, low-ceilinged space, the contemporary design of which doesn’t dare detract from the star of the show – the picture-perfect views of the skyline. Enhancing the restaurant’s cocooning effect are exquisite handmade silk screens with Suzhoustyle double-sided embroidery of magnolias, peonies, Chinese roses and chrysanthemums, each representing one of the four seasons. They appear to be suspended in the air thanks to the six-layered construction of the silk screens, which create an imperceptible sense of depth.

Elsewhere, nods to China’s traditional literati culture persist – in a glass enclosure that stores a private collection of Yixing clay teapots used by tea sommelier Kelvin Ng to steep the restaurant’s premium selection of Tieguanyin Supreme and 30-year aged pu’er; in the imperial yellow Library Wall of the smaller private dining room, comprised of hand-bound, silk-spined books; and in the green onyx birdcage panels of the larger VIP room, which were also present in the restaurant’s last iteration. Of the aforementioned “culinary treasures,” Yan Toh Heen’s portfolio is near-peerless thanks to Chef Lau Yiu-fai, whose three decades of experience makes itself known in the delicate and nuanced flavours of the menu. He modestly credits this not to his technique, but the quality of the ingredients. Yet, despite the restaurant’s reputation as a bastion of Cantonese cuisine, Chef Lau is surprisingly playful in his approach. One of his newer creations, the Lobster Trio, illustrates this method well. “I made a Portuguese-style baked lobster tart with avocado stuffing, a steamed lobster dumpling with XO sauce, and lastly, a fried lobster and radish pastry. This results in different mouthfeels, flavours and techniques, all from one main ingredient,” he says. Given Yan Toh Heen’s newly picturesque surrounds and his creative plating techniques, what does Chef Lau make of the multitudes of Instagram-happy diners who have descended on the restaurant? “It’s great! If it wasn’t for this culture, you wouldn’t be able to share the wonderful dining experience you just had. WELL LIT Light up a room in more ways than one with illumination that doubles as art. One of the key pieces in Bocci’s line of sculpture lighting, the 28 series features glass light fixtures lit from within by a low-voltage xenon or LED lamp. Opt for an assembly resembling a cluster of balloons for a touch of whimsy, or go for a suspension setup with copper branches that can be customised and installed on-site, for a more artistic look. The Canadian manufacturer’s sculptural pendant lights now come in 90 colours, including 25 new hues launched with the reopening of Bocci 79 in Berlin.
