Clockwise from let: In a room designed by Philip Mitchell at the 2018 Kips Bay Decorator Show House. The “Narnia closet” in the Whole Home concept house. A custom piece from Architectural Grille for the home’s dog room. A Ubarre weight. My son in his own secret space.

g

athering string is how journalists refer to the act of jotting down disparate, nonrelevant ideas. My own Notes app is full of “strings”—notions that might strike me at the time, but with no real project yet in mind. I’d bet your screenshots, bulletin boards, or folders of tear sheets are similar. In my notes from the past year, however, a clear theme surfaced: Our homes have untapped potential to nourish us. So I developed the idea further. The products and stories I gathered pointed toward the idea that our homes can inspire and support our healthy habits, from eating well to finding stillness—that our homes can make us whole. Thus, the Whole Home Project was born. And while we were publishing our yearlong series of special reports, a team in Atlanta was building and decorating the ideas in real life. Our concept house is revealed on page 63. From fitness gear so handsome it shouldn’t be shelved (see Best U Studio’s Ubarre weight, above) to a bold proclamation of passion for your pet (Architectural Grille’s dog-bone grate, also above), we highlight unexpected ways to energize your relationship with your home, and with yourself.

10

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

One not to miss—the “Narnia closet” on page 82. The idea was sparked by the home of Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project (see our April 2018 issue). That home was full of contradictions: aesthetically elevated yet fiercely functional; deeply personal but broadly appealing. (In short, very HB.) And it also made room for wonder—the decoration, by Katie Lydon, extended all the way to an under-thestairs nook for the kids that was even wallpapered. But the nook never made it into the pages of the magazine. We couldn’t wedge our adult-size photographer into the kid-size space. And that’s part of the room’s power—it’s fairy-tale stuff. The string gathered there was noting that decoration can heighten our sense of wonder, our lust for escape. And that’s essential to health and wellness, too—to live richly, you must leave space for possibilities. In this issue, I hope you’ll find your own bit of string worth gathering.

ike most frequent travelers, Jen Rubio has had some baggage-related nearmeltdowns. Ater her suitcase broke again in the middle of the Zurich airport, instead of simply grousing about it on Twitter, she vowed, Never again! and teamed up with friend and former Warby Parker colleague Steph Korey to launch Away, a thoughtfully designed luggage brand. “It always seemed crazy to me that travel is such an emotional experience, but the suitcase you bring is an aterthought,” says Rubio, now chief brand officer. “It should be exciting!” Away’s signature pieces boast plenty of smart details—integrated USB chargers, compression panels, nesting cases for easy storage—but it’s the 26

evocative colors that keep customers coming back. Along with core neutrals, Away regularly rolls out limited-edition, travel-inspired colorways: Think Stockholm-esque dusty shades (designed with Rashida Jones) and sunny Mediterranean yellow (care of Margherita Missoni). For Away’s holiday cases, Rubio took her palette from two favorite places: Cape Town, South Africa; and Tofino, Canada. “On one side of the world, you have the northern lights; on the other, you get the warm glow of summer,” Rubio says of the hues, which range from satin pink to an aurora borealis–like shimmering midnight. “Travel lets you see things in nature that you can’t believe really exist! That’s always inspiring to us.” —Emma Bazilian >

We helped her implement bold colors in her home in brave ways— like pairing this blackened turquoise with organic and geometric patterns in yellowy-green, black, and white. It made her home feel like she’d always imagined it could!”

“For a teenage girl balancing a full schedule of advanced courses and college applications, a calming bedroom retreat was in order. This overcast gray keeps the room light and airy during daylight hours and cool and serene at night—ideal for studying! A medium-dark wood floor and white wood trim give the space a beachy vibe.”

“My clients wanted their Palm Desert getaway to feel completely different from their day-to-day home—like a playhouse for hosting friends and family. “I love this dusty petal pink, not only because of its sotness but also for its subtle power to revitalize a space. I recently used it in the bathroom of a little girl who had moved with her family from Wichita, Kansas, to Houston. The shade reminded her of her room in their old house while also signifying an exciting, fresh chapter in a new city.”

“Ater raising two children, our clients wanted to reclaim their library as a personal sanctuary to reconnect with one another. I used this shade in a richly textured Roman Clay finish to enhance the intimate feeling. It fitted perfectly into the 1920s architecture of their Spanish Colonial house and transformed the room into a warm and tranquil oasis.”

“Wall color affects mood, so choose a shade that captures the vibe you’re craving. One of my clients had just received her first big promotion at work and, as a git to herself, bought a special piece of art and a dressing table for her bedroom. We drenched the walls in a sunny hue to match one of the colors in the painting; she now starts every day sitting pretty and confident! ”

“We recently helped create a ‘sot landing’ for an incredibly chic, newly single mother of two teenage girls who had moved into a fabulous old penthouse coated in dreary, muted tones. This shade, in a high-gloss finish, gave new life to all the beautiful millwork and moldings, while the same hue in a matte on the ceiling added depth.”

“When designing a new office for a small but rapidly growing company, I wanted a bold palette that would lend a sense of energy and excitement for both employees and clients. Pied-à-Terre with Punch! “I love being surrounded by things I cherish,” Baratta says of his colorful, curated collection of art and furniture. The lamps once belonged to his sister, and the lacquered side tables, which he designed years ago, were inspired by the Italian architect Giuseppe Terragni.

When Anthony Baratta heads to New York City for weekly meetings, the Long Island–based master designer, who built his reputation on whimsical, do-ifyou-dare interiors, stays at a miniature version of one of his riotous manses. The walls of this lightflooded Manhattan studio in the sky are crisp white—picked precisely to contrast with the expressive objets and art. “It clears my head to be enveloped by primary colors and geometric shapes,” Baratta says. The finds were pulled from his own treasure trove of storage and are ever-changing: “My homes are little laboratories, and once in a while, I need to start afresh and simplify.” >

1. Back to Basics “The bold art was the starting point for the palette. I’ll never get tired of red,” Baratta says of the lively cherry-hued scheme. He bought the painting above the bed at auction, only to later discover it had once hung in the gallery of a close friend. The Malm bed is by Ikea, with a Hudson’s Bay Point blanket. Painting, Kim MacConnel.

2. State of the Art

3. Closet Confidential “The cabana-inspired cabinets are from a house in Florida—they were some of the first pieces of furniture I ever designed,” he says. “And here they are back with me, 30 years later! I stash my clothes and the TV in them.” Lamp, chair, and Platner table, all vintage. 40

“Every piece connects me to someone I hold dear,” Baratta says. The Pop Art–inspired cartoons by Adam Lowenbein were owned by his late partner Bill Diamond, while the boat painting by his late friend Tom Slaughter was commissioned for his old Long Island cabin.

Boothby, 34, who is expecting her second child, in the living room she designed for a client’s Westchester County, New York, home.

Next Wave On the Rise: Chauncey Boothby

For many designers, accessorizing is a chance to show off their practical magic, turning a pile of bricks into a home with a capital H. Chauncey Boothby’s clients refer to it as “Chauncifying.” “I think they envision me showing up with my Mary Poppins bag and twitching my nose!” jokes the Rowayton, Connecticut, decorator. In reality, she says, there’s “a lot less magic and a lot more schlepping” involved in finding the quirky pieces that help create her signature cozy, New England–inspired interiors. Boothby, a Maine native, credits two years spent under the tutelage of Charlotte Moss (she has also done stints with David Easton and Ashley Whittaker) for spurring her love >

THE INSIDER EDGEWOOD HALL

Furniture Face-Lift Eddie shares his tried-and-true reupholstery tips. 58

One of the questions I’m oten asked by flea-market novices is how to buy quality vintage furniture. The short answer: Know your labels (brands like Henredon and Drexel are famous for their workmanship), give it a feel (is the piece heavy and solidly made?), and don’t be afraid of dated fabrics or crumbling foam cushions—that’s what reupholstery is for! When we stumbled upon a set of midcentury furniture at an estate-sale shop outside of Philadelphia, we knew that the shapes would be perfect for our living room, but the original wool upholstery was gross. Since we plan to host plenty of get-togethers in our new home—always a good time until someone spills red wine!—we decided to re-cover all three pieces in performance fabrics that resist stains but still feel amazing. We landed on yummy nuanced Crypton Home solids by Thibaut and had fun customizing each piece with our go-to local upholstery shop. The casters on the sofa were swapped out for brass legs from Ferrous Hardware; Turkish corners and tassel fringe from Samuel & Sons added a bohemian vibe to the slipper chair; and the armchair’s square lines were sotened with a loose cushion seat and a ruffled skirt. And while we were at it, we gave an antique dog bed its own Crypton Home makeover, too—our low-to-the-ground Pekes are total dust mops! —Eddie Ross

FOLLOW DESIGNER AND MODERN MIX AUTHOR EDDIE ROSS ON INSTAGRAM @eddieross

details 1. A kidney-shaped sofa is ideal for conversation and easy to place in a small living room like ours. 2. I opt for down-wrapped seat cushions over pure down, which can be too sot. 3. Because it doesn’t require a ton of fabric, a small slipper chair like this is the perfect chance to use a pricey textile.

Upholstery fabrics: Sofa, Mosaic in Seafoam; armchair, Montage in Apple; slipper chair, Annalise in Rose; dog bed, Bailey in Malachite, all Crypton Home by Thibaut. Welting: Crypton Home velvets through JF Fabrics. Fabric on wall: Ming Vase by Schumacher.

There’s an essential secret to a happy life that was well known even 150 years ago: Make your home a sanctuary of selfcare, and you’ll never have to look elsewhere for happiness. In the early 1870s, when the man behind the nom de plume Mark Twain was building his house in Connecticut, he and his wife, Olivia, had two special directives for their architect: a conservatory for their riotous houseplants, and a third-floor billiards room that would double as an office (the original man cave?). So today, ask yourself, what exactly are you doing at home to live your best life? With all the choices available—from smart light switches for instant relaxation to drugstore face masks—you’re now more capable than ever before of designing and stocking your home with an eye toward wellness. It’s what Samuel Clemens believed, and what House Beautiful has advocated since 1896: If you design your home well, you’ll live well. With a dedicated team of sponsors and pros (builder Michael Ladisic, architect Linda D’Orazio MacArthur, kitchen-and-bath designer Matthew Quinn, and interior designer Sherry Hart), we built a home in Atlanta from the ground up, including a kitchen engineered to inspire healthy eating and a no-excuses fitness studio. Go ahead: Pick a paint color, a gadget, or a whole frame of mind, and let it help you triumph every day.

64

The Project It took a village to raise HB’s Whole Home Project concept house, but all parties involved agreed that it had to look the part. “Our lives are so hectic, and we’re constantly bombarded, so we decided to go with the simplest idea of a house,” says architect Linda D’Orazio MacArthur of the exterior, which mimics a childlike drawing of a classic house. “We wanted it to be familiar.” THANKS TO OUR PROJECT SPONSORS AKDO, AMERICAN STANDARD, ARCHITECTURAL GRILLE, BALLARD DESIGNS, BENJAMIN MOORE, CALIFORNIA CLOSETS, CHARLES P. The modern farmhouse’s exterior includes tall, slim Marvin Windows and Doors windows, for ample sunlight and floor-toceiling fresh air inside. The metal-roof porch, outfitted with Woodard furniture, encourages neighborly chats, which just might boost longevity—studies show that a wide social network and community engagement can increase a person’s lifespan. Fitness: Front and Center In a space typically reserved for a dining room, we created this workout studio and meditation pad— because when your gym is two seconds from the kitchen, you’re more likely to put down the chips and roll out a yoga mat. A Peloton bike brings the trainer to you, and Ubarre weights double as sculpture. Meditation cushions await for when a 10-minute head-clearing is more vital than a good sweat, but in case you do perspire, the daybed seating is a resilient Moore & Giles leather. A daybed in Moore & Giles’s eco-friendly Eden leather—tanned using olive leaves—can stand up to kombucha spills and sweaty T-shirts. Curtain fabric, Abbot & Atlas. Rug, Loloi. The Bernhardt desk and Bungalow 5 lamp are from Perigold. Chair, Stressless. Windows, Marvin Windows and Doors. LEF T: All of the lights are operated by Noon, a smart-switch system with customizable “scenes,” such as Entertaining or Relax, that set the mood instantly. ABOVE:

Let There Be (Lots and Lots of) Light Builder Michael Ladisic believes in the life-changing power of natural daylight—because he’s living it. “I built my house to be flooded with light, and it has totally transformed my family’s mental state,” he says. Here, light is maximized with clever window placements, such as a dramatic two-story expanse at the stairwell—a traditional spin on the modernist walls of Philip Johnson’s Glass House— and with the ingenious lighting system Noon, which tunes in to your home’s rhythms and can dim and brighten bulbs based on your lighting habits. 70

A Help-You-BeHealthy Kitchen

Details of a healthy kitchen: The countertops and corner sink are in Nebula Pulsar by Silestone. A Signature Kitchen Suite dishwasher reduces water usage by skipping pre-rinsing. Kitchen cabinetry, Downsview Kitchens. Chandelier and sconces, Circa Lighting. Fixtures, American Standard. Wall tile, Floor & Decor. Floor tile, FireRock. Wood-veneer wallcovering on ceiling, Thibaut. Hardware, Rocky Mountain Hardware. RIGHT: The Signature Kitchen Suite appliances include a restaurant-quality, 48-inch range equipped with four gas burners, an induction cooktop, and a built-in sous vide (below). Backsplash, Renaissance Tile. Antique rug, Moattar.

Year-round on-demand fresh herbs? No, it’s not a new start-up, but the idea behind an in-kitchen grow room designer Matthew Quinn devised for this healthy kitchen. Clipping microgreens is almost as fun as letting the American Standard touch faucet precision-measure three cups of water for a batch of farro. Over at the Signature Kitchen Suite range, the built-in sous vide preps healthy proteins and more, locking in nutrients. Foods come out so tender and flavorful, it’s practically a party trick. 73

Let’s Get It Out in the Open On the premise that “the more convenient it is to grab something, the more likely you are to do it,” Quinn brought back the cold larder (right) to put healthy choices in plain sight. “Root cellars are typically in a dark, gross basement,” Quinn notes. But at kitchen level, this preservation room is glammed up and on display, showing off pre-portioned snacks (like washed strawberries, apples, and mini peppers) alongside potatoes, onions, grains, and jars of pickled deliciousness, all stored at the ideal temperature for longevity. “And 58 degrees also happens to be perfect for storing red wine!” Quinn says. Aesthetically pleasing baskets and bins (those farm-life touches have a spot in our soul) move from garden or market to home—reusable and highly Instagrammable. Elsewhere in the space, a wall of light makes dish duty a joy. Pro tip: Performing a routine task slowly—while taking in the sounds, scents, and feeling of it—is considered a mindfulness activity. Clean the dishes, clear your head.

The cold larder is lined in AKDO tile and stocked with Ballard Designs shelves. FAR LEF T: Dish drawers are ergonomic for all ages. Movable peg dividers keep dishware tidy and can be easily readjusted for quick customization. LEF T: For symmetry, the combo trash-andrecycling bin (left) was clad to match the Signature Kitchen Suite dishwasher. ABOVE:

Smart Utility, Less Anxiety To fret less and breathe more, consider the delivery shed, a closet or bin with a BoxLock, an app-enabled padlock that allows designated shippers (like FedEx) to drop off packages securely. No more panicking about a parcel let on the porch! Likewise, pet parents report higher life satisfaction than those without them; to keep it that way, add an architecturally A+ doggy door that leads to the yard. Also convenient: a half pocket door. “I love that I could put my pup in here when she’s muddy, close the half door, and know she’s not behind a closed wall,” Hart says. Soaping up pets in a caninesonly tub-and-shower combo takes pressure off your back—no stooping necessary. Bonus: A dedicated washer/dryer is ideal for tossing in first-floor laundry like dog beds, dish towels, and gym clothes. 76

These anti-aphrodisiacs are common in the modern bedroom, says Elana Kilkenny, an intuitive space designer who suggests nixing the gadgets and adding passionate hues (hello, raspberry headboard and red-trimmed Matouk bedding!) that come alive in low light. The canopy, a boutique-hotel staple, triggers feelings of an away-from-it-all escape, while the sofa promotes relationship-enhancing conversation.

A canopy, crated by Atlanta’s Designs by Sudi in a Sanderson fabric from Style Library, plus a Ballard Designs headboard and bench (in a Morris & Co. fabric from Style Library), absorb sound and add plushness. Bathing Beauty Without the teams of masseuses and facialists, five-star spas are essentially just glamorized bathrooms. So what’s to stop you from creating that indulgent retreat at home? Quinn’s master bathroom started with a womblike barrel-vaulted ceiling, modeled on a hammam. The Grohe rain showerheads pump air into the water, so you use less H2O without forfeiting pressure. Glimmering mirrorlike surfaces and a Lafco Sea & Dune candle complete the ambience. “This is clearly a retreat,” Quinn says. “It’s ethereal and cloud-like when you’re in there.” Cue up Lakmé’s “Flower Duet”!

Organize to Inspire Calm starts here. If you look organized, you’ll feel organized, and your closet—domain of treasured possessions, the things that represent you to the world—is telling. (There’s a reason Marie Kondo says to start with clothes!) This space, outfitted by California Closets, puts your things in order so your life follows suit. There’s utility: a compact, freestanding LG Styler steamer (above) that reduces wrinkles and odors and refreshes creases on pants. And also beauty: When your wardrobe looks like a boutique, you’re bound to enjoy it. To make it extra personal, says HB editor in chief Sophie Donelson, “stash the scarf or brooch you might not wear, but is sentimental to you, inside. Every time you see it, you’ll think of that special person or time.” In this California Closets–designed space, glimpsing a sea of baubles organized in suede-like compartments is like opening a git each morning. Room-toGrow Ideas With imagination and free play as the tenets for the children’s quarters, the adults in the room agreed on one thing: a hideaway in plain sight. “My kids loved The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,” MacArthur says. “So we thought, What if the hall closet had a hidden ladder to a secret attic space?” (There’s also adult access to the playroom through a bedroom lot.) The impulse that makes kids hide out behind sofas and erect pillow forts also makes them love these clandestine modern eaves. 82

Live Outside Nowhere in HB’s Whole Home concept house is the good energy more free-flowing than on the open-air porch, amid a leafy canopy (and Benjamin Moore Gumdrop paint). Listening to Carolina wrens chirp and the breeze rustle trees is a mini version of the Japanese concept of Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing— taking in natural surroundings as a powerful form of mental and physical therapy. When you’re ready to reengage, the gas fireplace offers primal entertainment. And yes, the 65-inch LG OLED TV probably has the game on, but if you still want to feel calm, choose Gallery Mode instead. Cultured, relaxed, and energized— and all within the comforts of home.

INTERIOR DESIGN CATHY KINCAID INTERVIEW KATHLEEN RENDA PHOTOGRAPHY MIGUEL FLORES-VIANNA PRODUCER DAVID M. MURPHY

EW MEMORIE

AFTER A DEVASTATING FIRE, TEXAS DESIGNER CATHY KINCAID EMBRACES A NEW HOME, MAKING ROOM FOR EVERYTHING SHE LOVES: BLUE-CHIP ANTIQUES, MODERN ART, GRANDCHILDREN, AND— WHY NOT?—A FEW CHICKENS.

Painted in the 1930s, this seascape mural with a memorable history is the bold backdrop for the dining room of designer Cathy Kincaid’s Highland Park, Texas, home. The 1820s French table, which extends to 12 feet long for Thanksgiving dinner, is set with Mexican glassware and vintage D. Porthault linens. OPPOSITE: Walls in Farrow & Ball French Gray echo the stripes in the Elizabeth Eakins rug.

91

How did a mural with schooners and seafarers in breeches land in a Texas dining room? C ATHY KINC A ID: It looks like it’s from an old Connecticut farmhouse, but it’s pure Lone Star State. Nina Claiborne, a famous local designer and artist, hand-painted the canvas panels in the 1930s and hung them in her Dallas home. I bought her place, and the mural—how amazing is this?—was still on the dining room walls, in perfect condition. The scenes were done in a faux-naïf style, and they are charming. And fun: The story goes that Nina modeled one of the

ABOVE, FROM LEF T: Kincaid layered artwork, including a gilt-framed still life of figs from New Orleans’s food-centric antiques shop Lucullus, over the dining room’s mural. Painted in Farrow & Ball Borrowed Light, the glossy living room ceiling “reflects light and appears higher,” she says. OPPOSITE, FROM LEF T: A Madeline Weinrib rug defines the dining area within the family room, where an Eero Saarinen table is paired with Thonet chairs from Design Within Reach. Cuban artist Julio Larraz’s playful oil painting of a watermelon matches the whimsy—and the culinary theme—of the table’s lettuceware plates.

figures on her husband. He later cheated on her, so she took out her paintbrush and decapitated him—which is why a man in the mural appears to be headless! Ater I’d been living there for some 15 years, a fire destroyed most of the house. And the day ater the blaze, with everything still smoldering and dripping wet, I was determined to salvage this artwork. The panels I could save were in bad shape, and they went into storage until I moved to this cottage. Reviving and installing them took work: My painter restored parts and re-created others. Some artistic license was taken—there’s now a spot in the seascape where the waves move in two different directions! K ATHLEEN RENDA : How extensive was the fire? It wiped out our second floor completely, and water and smoke ruined sections of the downstairs. For me, it had been a very happy home.

I bought it with my late husband, and it was so glamorous. The rooms were like jewel boxes, and everyone who saw them loved them. Then my husband died, and a year later the home was in flames. But do you know what I was thinking while I watched everything burn? That I was lucky. I got out safely, and so did all my pets. My baby granddaughter, who had been scheduled to visit the next day—and sleep in a bedroom that caught fire—wasn’t harmed. I chose not to rebuild: A different home would be a clean slate where I could start over, without being surrounded by all the reminders of my husband. It was a chance for new memories and new beginnings. Did you house-hunt right away? For six months ater the fire I was mentally paralyzed, and I didn’t think about real estate at all. Then I fell for this old-fashioned caretaker’s cottage. It’s an American Shingle Style you’d swear is from rural New England. The property even had one of the oldest trees in the neighborhood.

A NEW HOME IS A CLEAN SLATE— A CHANCE FOR NEW MEMORIES. But the inside was Tudor: dark rooms, small leaded windows, heavy plaster on the walls. I spent a year-and-a-half remodeling—removing cove ceilings, enlarging and moving windows— to pare it down and bring in light. I’m a firm believer in getting the architecture right. I’d rather have plain curtains on perfect windows than disguise problem windows with elaborate

93

THERE’S ELEGANCE, BUT IT’S NOT FANCY. curtains. I decorated with an eye to ease and comfort, with lots of blue and white, Indian and Moroccan, and traditional antiques. There’s elegance, but it’s not fancy—I have seven grandchildren, four chickens, three dogs, and a cat. I didn’t expect all the contemporary art. The modern pieces play well with the simple country style. They keep the rooms from feeling too sweet and act like a palate cleanser. What’s fascinating is that clients who originally wanted traditional art when I first did their homes are now asking me to replace the still lifes and horse portraits with more modern works by such

94

artists as Brice Marden and Helen Frankenthaler. Aterward, the rooms seem more open. I’ve always collected contemporary art. When I bought my first piece, I had to negotiate with my husband and then take out a loan. I still have the art—it’s the Julio Larraz watermelon oil painting in the family room. It’s like I always tell my clients: Buy the best you can afford, invest in quality, and you won’t regret it. The guest bedroom is Princess-and-the-Pea lavish! How do you ever get visitors to leave? I’ve dubbed it my “convalescing from a broken leg” room. It’s cozy and comfy, it’s right on the first floor, and people do gravitate to it for extended stays. The bed, an Albert Hadley design, is always dressed with custom Leontine Linens—pretty linens are my biggest weakness. I hung the vintage mirror from John Rosselli because I think older things give a room character. They make it real. Not enough younger designers look to the past, and that’s a mistake. Maybe they’re afraid to look back? But there’s so much meaning there, and so much to be learned.

Cut in half and flanking both sides of the John Rosselli & Associates bed, a Moroccan screen that Kincaid nabbed at the Round Top Antiques Fair for $200 has double the impact in the master bedroom. The custom shade topping the vintage lamp is edged with pleating reminiscent of a tennis skirt. OPPOSITE: Steel-framed windows transformed the former front porch into a sunlit foyer and a wintertime orangery. “In the colder months, I fill it with my citrus trees,” Kincaid says. The 19th-century fruitwood bench is French, and the octagonal table is Moroccan. Floor tiles, Ann Sacks.

THIS PAGE AND OPPOSITE:

Kincaid brought an exotic feel to the guest bedroom by creating a canopy for the vintage Albert Hadley bed from two Lisa Fine Textiles linens, one hand-printed with palm trees. The floral frame on the vintage John Rosselli & Associates mirror echoes the sprigs on the historic Adelphi Paper Hangings wallpaper, a reproduction of a pattern from 1760. Tucked amid custom monogrammed Leontine Linens is a Mi Golondrina pillow embroidered with the Spanish word besos (“kisses”). Rattan tray tables, Serena & Lily. Lamps, Pottery Barn. IT’S MAGIC

A barrel vault sculpts the intimate dining space, framing views of the breakfast area and kitchen. The plaster arcs, in Benjamin Moore Classic Gray, are echoed by the Circa Interiors & Antiques round table and Julie Neill Designs chandelier. Rolling ottomans by Charles Stewart tuck extra seats under twin consoles.

ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN PURSLEY DIXON TEXT DOUGLAS BRENNER PHOTOGRAPHY ANNIE SCHLECHTER PRODUCER FRANCES BAILEY

ON A NARROW LOT IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, ARCHITECTS PURSLEY DIXON CONJURE A TRICKEDOUT TOWNHOUSE FILLED WITH FOOL-THE-EYE SPACE SAVERS, FROM A SPICE CABINET HIDDEN BEHIND A PAINTING TO A MURPHY BED–INSPIRED HOME BAR. IT DOESN’T GET MUCH SMARTER THAN THIS.

SECRET INGREDIENTS “That old movie prop, the wall safe masked by a picture, was on our minds when we designed this spice cabinet,” says project architect Mark Kline, of the firm Pursley Dixon. Recessed into the backsplash above a Caesarstone countertop, storage vanishes behind the hinged frame of an oil painting. This way, the view from the great room includes art, not cabinets.

BAR HARBOR Besides housing a Thermador oven and convection microwave, the compact pantry multitasks as a bar. A bottomhinged cabinet panel swings down to provide a serving station with shelves of glassware in easy reach (a vertical support for the counter swivels out of the woodwork). When the “Murphy bar” is closed up, an adjacent door gives everyday access to glasses.

100

Behind the breakfast room’s custom table and benches, a parapet rises from the kitchen island to conceal the sink and messy dishes. The island’s rare pecky-cypress sheath gives it the stature of fine furniture; table lamps hardwired in place at both ends enhance that aura. Sisal rug by Stark. OPPOSITE, FROM TOP: A Visual Comfort picture light illuminates Charlotte artist Janine Medlin’s landscape; the backsplash is marble, and the countertop is Caesarstone in Lagos Blue. Oak woodwork is stained in Cabot’s Dune Gray.

DOUBLE FEATURE The bifold-panel painting by Stuart Coleman Budd is a clever way to hide a TV, but the idea was not to be deceitful, so principal architect Ken Pursley added the picture light and extended the hinges. “Bronze hinges honestly express that it’s a movable screen—that this is true kinetic art.”

S

“Sometimes it felt like we were building a small yacht,” recalls Pursley Dixon principal architect Ken Pursley. He’s speaking of the elegant ingenuity designed into every inch of this 3,800square-foot house on a skinny lot in Charlotte, North Carolina. The homeowners, whose primary residence lies outside the city, wanted a snug pied-àterre that nonetheless provided the gracious layout, abundant daylight, fine materials, and fanciful details more typical of much larger homes. Pursley welcomed the challenge. “Cooking things down makes them richer, more intense,” he observes. “Living small doesn’t mean giving up good architecture. It just means being thoughtful about using the space you have—and the right tricks to manage scale.” Here, the wizardry involves expansive windows that collect sunshine from all directions; shape-shiting walls that conjure coziness as well as grandeur; and cabinetwork that makes domestic clutter disappear. From the spice chest in disguise to a palette of whites, grays, and blues, each gesture animates the whole interior. “It’s as if you’re on an emotional journey,” Pursley says, “an adventure full of discoveries and fun.”

PEEKABOO DETAILS Cutout brackets flanking the toe kick of a bathroom vanity echo the architecture of the house, from arch to gable. “You can tell that these contours were born from pencil and paper,” Kline explains. “I can’t give a profile the right personality if I design it on a computer.”

Placing the entry at one side of the gabled structure enabled a central bay window to project light through the core of the house; the exterior is painted in Pratt & Lambert Shadow Beige. In an upstairs guest bathroom, a generous mirror and vanity painted in Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray visually enlarge tight quarters; sink fittings, Sigma. OPPOSITE: In the living room, armchairs from Circa Interiors & Antiques invite fireside chats. The glassed-in entry porch doubles as foyer and conservatory. Rug, Stark. RIGHT, FROM TOP:

SETTING BOUNDARIES “Norman, the family Havanese, likes being in on all the action,” says Bronwyn Ford, the interior designer on the project. But when the kitchen is busy enough without having a dog underfoot, this retractable gate lets him keep watch from a rear hall. The gate’s hidden wheels follow a guide track into a wall pocket.

104

Hallway closets with discreet flushmounted doors take advantage of eaves and other letover nooks. OPPOSITE: The homeowners’ granddaughter, Caroline, greets Norman at the kitchen gate. Painted in Sherwin-Williams Unusual Gray and paved with bluestone, the hallway/mudroom leads to the ground-floor master bedroom as well as the backyard. FOR MORE DETAILS, SEE RESOURCES

ROUNDING THE BEND Instead of jogging abruptly to the guest room, an upstairs hallway “wiggles,” as Pursley puts it. He purposely designed a cramped passage to heighten the drama of arrival— a classic “compression-andrelease trick.”

This Brentwood house used to be yours alone. Then along came your husband, Dan Shea, and his dog, Webster, with regular visits from his two college-age kids. How was that adjustment? K A RYN R . MILLE T: This was my first house, which I bought not long before Dan and I met. When things got serious, I knew I had to adapt the house for my new life. Even though it’s not big, I wasn’t ready to give up on it! It still felt new to me, and I was attached to it. And Dan understood that. Once we were engaged, I called up my friend, the interior designer Joe Lucas, and asked him to redo the bedroom to make room for Dan. That was my wedding present to him. One thing led to another, and over the next couple of years, Joe ended up helping us redo the whole house. O RLI B EN - D O R: Was it challenging to collaborate on the design of your house with a close friend? No, it was wonderful. I’m a photographer, and I shoot interiors, so I have been inside some of the most beautiful spaces. I know dozens of designers, but until now, I had never actually worked with one. This was my first experience, and I loved it. When I looked at the presentations with all the fabrics and colors, I felt like the belle of the ball. “This is all for me?” Joe says one of his goals was convincing you that you deserved a “decorated” house—one that looks layered and finished.

109

It did take some convincing. Decorating is expensive! The furniture from my previous apartment was cute, and I could have lived with it. Joe’s focus was function. We went room by room, and in each phase, we started with one item on my punch list. For example, Dan needed a place to put his clothes in the bedroom. My study became his son’s room, so I had to create a new office— one that the two of us could share. In the living room, I realized that my sofa was uncomfortable. It’s funny—as a single person, you make do. But now that I had a family, it was important to upgrade. Joe made this transition so easy. He helped take this place from my house to our house, which is what I wanted—for everyone to feel at home. Do you have a favorite room? What I love is how the whole house works together. When we reconfigured the space, we changed the location of my home office. Now, I need to walk through the living room to get there, and I enjoy seeing my “friends” along the way—a table from Joe’s shop, Harbinger; fabric from Chris Barrett; a pillow by Sharon Lee of Krane Home; and Peter Dunham’s Fig Leaf in the office. Since I work in this industry, it’s not just “stuff” to me. Each object means something. When it’s time to get a cup of coffee, I pass back through the living room and into the dining room and kitchen, where I see more friends. How do you feel about sharing an office with your husband? Dan works as an investment banker, but he’s also very creative. He always wanted to be an architect, so he enjoyed working with Scott Joyce on the archi-

tectural plans. When we are in the office together, if I’m stumped between two images, he’ll roll his chair over and lend his eye. I love that I can bring out his creativity. We found each other a bit later in life, so working side by side is nice. We’re making up for lost time! Is it even possible to have a bad work day in that cheerful space? Not since I got the Dutch door I have always wanted! I fling it open all the time, let the fresh air in, and listen to the birds chirp. It reminds me to take a break—and to water the plants. And just outside is where Dan and I got married, high up on our perch in the backyard, which I call the Sunset Terrace. How wonderful to have had such a special event in your own home. Because of the wedding, every single member of both of our families has been to our house. I will never forget seeing them all come through the front door of our home and navigate their way through the house to the backyard, where everyone climbed to the top of the steps to witness our marriage. This house has a fabulous history, doesn’t it? Yes! We’re located on the old Rita Hayworth estate. She used to live in the big house at the top of the hill, and I heard that Humphrey Bogart would visit her here. She called her home the Happiness Hotel, so I call mine the Happy House. The other day, I was chained to my desk, and my mom called me from Newport Beach and said, ‘You have to go look at the sunset.’ So I pushed myself away from the computer, climbed up the stairs to the Sunset Terrace, and watched the sun go down from here as my mom watched it set from her place. I don’t know that Dan and I will stay here forever, but we already have so many happy memories.

JOE HELPED TAKE IT FROM MY HOUSE TO OUR HOUSE.

GUEST STAR Pops of lemon yellow liven up the roof deck of designer Vern Yip’s Rosemary Beach, Florida, vacation home, which overlooks the Gulf of Mexico. Furniture, cushions, pillows, and planters by Dedon.

INTERIOR DESIGN VERN YIP TEXT EMMA BAZILIAN

AS A WORLD TRAVELER, VERN YIP KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT BEING PAMPERED WHILE ON THE ROAD. IN THE TINY GUEST COTTAGE OF HIS BEACHFRONT FLORIDA GETAWAY, THE DESIGNER AND TV HOST PACKS IN ALL THE AMENITIES OF A LUXURY HOTEL WHILE RETAINING THE COZY CHARMS OF A TRUE HOME AWAY FROM HOME.

LOUNGE ACT The tight urban lots of Rosemary Beach meant little space for an in-ground pool, so Yip had one built on the roof of the carriage house. The best part, he says: “It has the most amazing views!” PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID A. LAND

PRODUCER DORETTA SPERDUTO

A

An avowed globe-trotter with 56 countries (and counting!) already checked off his list, Atlanta designer Vern Yip is no stranger to being a guest. “From how you lay out the space to the finishes you choose, there are so many ways to make people feel at home during their travels,” he says. When it came time to transform the carriage house of his family’s Rosemary Beach, Florida, vacation home into a retreat for visiting friends and family, Yip used his experience and expertise—not to mention yards upon yards of his own fabrics and trims from Trend—to create a space that balances comfort, convenience, and beachy-luxe decor. At just 580 square feet—a size belied by its bright, airy interior—the guest retreat is also a master class in smart space planning. “Every time people see the carriage house, they ask, ‘Is this the master suite?’” Yip says. “To me, that’s the ultimate compliment!”

ART SCHOOL Yip commissioned a Katsushika Hokusai– inspired mural by artist Michael Boudreault of Artisan Rooms for the living room. “It adds a focal point to an otherwise blah wall,” he says. 116

REFLECT ON IT Mirrored insets break up a wall of kitchen cabinets and bounce light into the room. “With clear-glass doors, everything is on display,” Yip says. “And that isn’t something you want to worry about in a small space, where storage is at a premium.”

The sofa’s Brookwood performance fabric and the bolsters’ Palisades Velvet are from Yip’s collection for Trend. Kitchen counter and backsplash, Cambria. Cabinets, Omega Cabinetry. Microwave and oven, Bertazzoni. OPPOSITE, FROM TOP: A Yip wallcovering for Trend surrounds a spiral staircase. The MT Company chairs are in a Vern Yip for Trend fabric; pendants, Vern Yip for Stonegate by AFX; cabinet, Oly; cocktail table, Aronson Woodworks.

CURTAIN CALL Floor-to-ceiling curtains can be pulled shut to cordon off the bunk nook. “Each bunk has a TV, so it really feels like you’re inside a luxury tent!” Yip says. Vertical stripes of tape trim break up the expanse of fabric.

“When you add trim to drapery or pillows, it adds a level of detail and personalization that can be missing from new homes,” Yip says. Curtain and bedding fabrics and trim, Vern Yip for Trend. Bunk bed, Ducduc. OPPOSITE, CLOCK WISE

TRIPLE PLAY The custom quartz console in the living room (above) multitasks as a prep surface and dining table. Using a single stripe of Greek key tape on a swivel armchair is a modern twist on traditional upholstery styling.

Frosted-glass inserts lighten up the space-saving barn doors without sacriďŹ cing privacy. Performance fabrics and scrubbable vinyl wallcoverings (like the faux shagreen in the bedroom) ensure stress-free stays. Pendant light, Vern Yip for Stonegate by AFX. SUNNY FORECAST The citrine hue in Yip’s fabric collection was inspired by his global expeditions. “It’s a color you see all over the world, from India and Thailand to Portugal and France,” says the designer. “It’s joyful and happy, which is exactly how you want to feel at a beach house!”

It’s Back! Flannel Sheets

WRITER EMMA BAZILIAN ILLUSTRATOR CHRISTOPHER SILAS NEAL

We love slipping into crisp cotton sheets, but on a frosty night, nothing says cozy like flannel. The onetime kids’-room staple has found a new audience in the Snuggie generation. Insta-famous bedding brand Boll & Branch has introduced a streamlined plaid, to rave reviews: “When we sent out samples, people kept telling us, ‘This feels so much better than I remembered!’” says cofounder Missy Tannen. (The secret is an additional shearing process that removes extra weight.) And warm-weather dwellers aren’t exempt, admits New Orleans designer and flannel-sheets convert Shaun Smith. “Sometimes I’ll turn the AC down extra low just to have an excuse to bundle up in them,” he says. “It’s the best feeling—an instant hug!”
