Authentic Experiences

WHAT STAYS WITH US in the end are moments; moments that activate our soul, fill us up with emotion forever engraved in our minds – and make us feel complete, even if they last a single heartbeat. These authentic experiences stay with us long after they’ve come and gone – after we’ve returned home. Mykonos is a land rife with such experiences. And each and every one of the Myconian Collection properties is here to allow you to collect as many as you can. Mykonos is certainly famous for its parties, nightclubs and jet-setter crowd. Still, there is something more… Behind the scenes, another Mykonos awaits those who can read between the lines. For your clues, pay attention to the sound of the waves strumming the rocks; to the wind whistling in its passing, playing a different melody each time; to the echo of early morning footsteps in the alleys; to the hiss of a coffee being prepared at a kafeneio. Take in the smell of freshly whitewashed houses. Discover country chapels that 030

stand lonely but not lonesome, and swim in azure waters at hidden beaches and coves. Meet the local Mykonians who have shaped the island and have been shaped by it – fishermen, farmers, authors, artists, historians, architects... Let yourself take in the light and the unique energy that Delos radiates. As the ancient myth goes, Leto gave birth to Artemis and Apollo – “and Delos flooded with golden light and filled with blooming flowers; and the dazzled goddesses cheered.” Perched on the top of Kynthos, Zeus himself was watching the birth of his children. Legend has it that this concentration of otherworldly powers charged Delos with positive energy forever. This light and this unmatched energy has been cast on Mykonos for millennia, making every moment on it an exceptional experience. Poet Lawrence Durrell called it “the phosphorescence of Apollonian light”. Once, while we were marvelling at Delos glimmering in the light of the sunset, my friend Amaryllis Grypari – a local tour guide

who has collected oral traditions passed on from generation to generation – explained to me how far back authentic hospitality goes in Mykonos. In ancient times, Mykonians opened their doors to take in travellers on their way to Delos, offering a roof, a bed, a meal. Although many had never left their island, they showed kindness and hospitality to diverse people from faraway lands. Today, Mykonos locals continue to heartily welcome travellers, and travellers continue to arrive here looking for experiences. One of these locals is George Daktylides, a man who took the essence of authentic Mykonos hospitality and distilled it into the Myconian Collection, an exquisite set of hotels and villas created with love and with a passion to give guests wonderful experiences and memories. It was 1979 when the first one, Kohili, opened its doors to welcome travellers. Almost forty years later, the Myconian Collection remains authentic as ever, with the four Daktylides brothers – George’s sons – having taken the reins of what remains a family business. Luxurious but effortless and warm, all nine Myconian Collection hotels are run with the philosophy that real quality is found in comfort but also simplicity and exemplary customer service. From gorgeous rooms to sun-kissed terraces, from high gastronomy to stunning pools, from art events to elegant spa rituals, the Myconian Collection and Mykonos itself offer authenticity and endless opportunity to experience those special moments that turn into memories. Remember this: Beyond any holiday experience, it is the culture and the light of this place – and its authenticity – that define our memories. You are welcome to Mykonos. A Ground-Breaking New Museum for Delos

An innovative new museum concept and design has been put forward by Carolyn Heim and Jean-Pierre Heim, inspired and informed by the significance and symbolism of Delos. 032

MYCONIAN COLLECTION

WHEN THE MINISTER of Culture and the Minister of Tourism of Greece reached out to Jean Pierre Heim to present his vision and concept for the design of a museum for Delos, the resulting proposal took everyone’s breath away. Jean-Pierre Heim is an internationally renowned architect with a diverse portfolio. He has worked for significant clients such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Revillon, Baccarat, Christian Lacroix, Lanvin, Lancel, Puiforcat and Club Med. Throughout his impressive career, he has designed world-famous venues including luxury resorts and entertainment centres. And just last year, in 2017, Jean-Pierre Heim put together a pioneering design concept for the Delos archaeological site in Greece. Calling it impressive would be an understatement. THE SYMBOLISM According to the proposal, the new museum is to be name Sole-Delos after the mythological siblings Apollo and Artemis. According to Heim Design, the name stands as a symmetrical anagram paying tribute to the mythical delta triangle, a symbol of Delos. For those unfamiliar with Greek mythology, it was one of the almighty Cyclops – or Giants – who hurled a giant stone, which became Delos. Granite, stones and rocks are symbols of energy. Delos’ geological composition comprises three energy minerals, Jean Pierre Heim explains: quartz, mica, and feldspar. The architect imagined an equilateral triangle with a north-south axis to protect the entrance to the museum from the strong etesian winds – the meltemia – of the Aegean, which can last for days. THE VISION Imagine 5000 m2 of living space comprising three structures up to 100 metres in length. At their tallest, they stand at 20 metres, including 3-5 metres of underground space. Very significant to the project is the ground level, a reflection of the soil of ancient Delos buried by time and destruction – as only 10 percent of the site has been unearthed so far. Heim has designed three concrete slab bridges crossing a reservoir that collects rainwater, mostly in the winter, as the entrance and exit of the museum, itself built with a reinforced concrete vault due to the high seismic activity in the region. The concrete vault ceiling will also protect the invaluable contents of the museum from the heat and will be tall enough to give a sense of a natural dome, mirroring the dome of the sky which was so important in antiquity. Ancient Greek mathematicians, astronomers, historians and philosophers would have agreed – the height of the ceiling here is important.

AERIAL VIEW OF THE BACK Getting inspiration from mythological siblings Apollo and Artemis, the new museum will be named Sole-Delos - a symmetrical anagram paying tribute to the Greek letter Delta, the symbol of Delos.

the edit A PIONEERING DESIGN CONCEPT Jean-Pierre Heim, the designer. Middle: Details from the interiors. Bottom: The Lion Gallery, placed next to the 3D model to symbolically guard ancient Delos.

At the core of the Sole-Delos Museum, a spiral staircase leads from the lower to the upper floor. The steps will gradually become larger, and access to the second floor will be through a large ramp. Showcases and displays will be visible from it. The concrete vault will be covered in stone, with plants climbing up the structure and transforming it into an organic part of the environment. Large triangular glass openings higher in the vault will bring inside the famous light of Delos, which is said to be of the brightest in the world. Smaller triangular windows at the eye level visible throughout the museum’s interior will provide views of the archaeological site. According to the design, the floor will be in rough marble, with the site’s surviving archaeological remains to be kept at their original location to preserve the site’s harmony. THE DESIGNER Jean-Pierre Heim’s talent for combining art and agriculture with architectural design has led to his “Travelling is an art” approach. The perfect example is found at his eco-village project in Bishan, near Chongquing in China. This ecoartistic and agricultural village highlights a fresh approach to hospitality design combined with state-of-the-art technology. In addition to his work as an architect, Mr Heim is also a foreign trade advisor with in-depth knowledge of international markets, acting as a liaison between American, Chinese and European businesses seeking to operate on both sides of the Atlantic and China. Jean Pierre Heim is based in Paris and works with his daughter, Carolyn Heim, also an architect with a Master’s in Architecture from l’ Ecole Speciale d’Architecture in Paris. Carolyn is co-founder of HEIMstyle.com. It is worth mentioning that Mr Heim is also the co-president, co-founder and set designer of “The French Will Never Forget“, a committee that cherishes and values the friendship between France and the USA (www.TheFrenchWillNeverForget.com). www.HEIMdesign.com 034

The Happy Platform A two-storey home on Panagia Panachra Square called Dio Horia hosts both works of art and artists who live and create inspired by the island.

THIS IS THE THIRD summer that Dio Horia, a dynamic contemporary art and culture platform, is swimming in the visual art scene’s deep end in Mykonos Town, attracting art lovers from all over the world. A mix of art exhibitions, residencies, events, publications and pop-up bookstores give occasion to discussions, experimentation, creativity and the exchange of knowledge – which is exactly what Marina Vranopoulou had in mind in 2015 when she created this venue for original visual art dialogue in the heart of the island. The name Dio Horia is inspired by the title of a book by distinguished Greek architect Aris Konstantinidis, “Dio Horia sti Mykonos”. The word “horia” has two meanings. It is simultaneously a hamlet and a place; a place where the international and Greek visual art scene dances the dance of creativity. This year, the season kicked off with a group exhibition by 16 artists curated by the creator of Dio Horia herself. The exhibition has its own story to tell, inspired by that small speck of land on the map, Delos.

the edit It all began with a pivotal incident that took place on the island of Delos and which drafted the physical and cultural journey that followed. In mythology, Delos was initially an undeclared floating island that spoke, which accepted its name and static location in order to become the birthplace of the ancient deities Apollo and Artemis. However, during the Peloponnesian War, the city-state of Athens enforced a cleansing of the island, removing the dead and exiling its locals. Thus, gradually, Delos was transformed into a place where both death and birth were absent in equal measure. Nature itself came into conflict with humanity and its decisions. Who was the winner in this contest? Through a fragmented, almost surreal narration, the exhibition focuses on the corrosive relationship that has existed between humanity and nature over the centuries. Works from a variety of media are exhibited (paintings, videos, sculptures, and neon), which, all together and each in its separate way, use light and colour to strengthen the narrative of the exhibition; to externalise the questioning of political authority throughout all those years and even at present; and to protest western societies and the way in which they were formed. There is no human presence in the works exhibited. Traditional landscapes and Apollonian sunsets fill the space and compose an imaginative universe. A surreal landscape

that was created when the human souls left Delos is filled with mythological animals and figures originating from legends, set up just two kilometres of present day Delos. During the same period, Maja Djordjevic from Belgrade will present her works, which are reminiscent of digitally rendered doodles. Djordjevic has participated in many international exhibitions and art fairs. Among the artists hosted in July will be Matthew Palladino, who creates paintings, sculptures and designs that represent complex images. His reliefs look like modern hieroglyph inscriptions and plastic-packaged mass consumption products at the same time. Through his designs on paper Palladino presents the audience with watercolours, a medium often overlooked in contemporary art practices. In August, hosted sculptor and performer Raul De Nieves will rock the boat with his personal visual practices, which are based on his childhood in Mexico where he was taught sewing and crochet. His works are filled with beads, thread and other sparkly – while also low-cost – materials. He uses them to make his “surrounding scenery”, through which, as he explains, he studies the joy and sadness of life together as one. Works of his have already been purchased for the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los

Angeles. In the last year alone Palladino exhibited at the Documenta 14 international exhibition in Kassel and before that at MoMA PS1. In September, Peter McDonald will exhibit his colourfully painted compositions depicting scenes from our everyday life such as social gatherings and gym classes. Does that sound a little too simple? The people in his works are not exactly depicted as human, as they have large colourful balloons instead of heads and faces. Through his art, McDonald wants to make as many viewers as possible happy and Mykonos is the right place to do that. After all, he paints his protagonists in social gatherings where they are having fun interacting with one another. During the same month Despina Stokou, who lives and works in Los Angeles, will speak, through her work, about idealism, feminism and the tradition of great painters of the past. Her works are usually dominated by the use of one colour on which there is fragmented use of excerpts from texts. These texts are usually composed from words that the artist borrows from public discourse and stand as a direct reaction to distracting channels of communication. Her work can already be found in great public and private collections such as the Deutsche Bank collection, the Schwartz Collection at Harvard, and the Zabludowicz in London and Turin.

A Land of Art

At the Municipal Art Gallery of Mykonos, the artistic past, present and future of the island’s capital shines brighter than ever. IN 1952, WHEN MYKONIAN painter Maria Igglesi donated to the city the building that today houses the Municipal Art Gallery of Mykonos, Mykonos Town was very different. Today, the only thing that remains the same is the aura of the Art. Right in the centre of the town, on Kalogera and Matoyanni Streets, the two halls of the Gallery house exhibitions of paintings, iconography, mosaics, photography and sculpture. The last few years, an additional space donated by Stefanos Syriotis on Meletopoulou Street also hosts exhibitions, usually of art objects. This summer, starting at the end of May all the way to mid-October, the Municipal Art Gallery will host the works of a group of painters from the Russian Academy of Culture and Art as well as foreign artists who have chosen to make Mykonos their home. These include Luis Orozco, Monika Derpapa, Richard James North and many more. But there’s also up-and040

the edit coming Greek artist Vasilis Antonakos, internationally acclaimed Lebanese Hawini and others, here to bring art to the heart of Mykonian summer. Among the interesting exhibitions and events, we find a project that will transport us back in time. Curated by art historian Irini Savvani, “Mykonos through the gaze of artists. From Interwar years to 1960” will reveal a relatively unknown side of the cultural history of the island. During this period, this same enchanting landscape with its natural beauty and distinct architecture became a catalyst in inspiring artists who lived and worked on Mykonos. How did they find themselves here? In 1932, the first Art Stop of the Athens School of Fine Arts was established in Mykonos following an initiative of Dean Kostas Dimitriadis (1881-1943). The Stop hosted Greek and foreign artists visiting to study the Greek landscape. Among them was acclaimed Greek artist Yiannis Moralis (1916-2009), who had a residency in 1935 and completed a series of sketches of the island. There was also German photographer Herbert List (1903-1975), who captured on film images of Mykonos and the antiquities of nearby Delos (1939). The archetypal Mykonian landscape, the blinding light reflected on whitewashed houses and the sea inspired these artists to edit out unnecessary elements and focus on creative minimalism. The exhibition sees works by important, renowned painters on public display for the first time, since many pieces come from private collections. They are supplemented by rich archive and photographic material that stands as evidence of the intellectual and cultural zeitgeist of the era. In terms of the Art Gallery’s 2018 programme, quite a few exhibitions stand out: Visit Matoyanni Hall to see “Memories of light”, art photography by Maria Rambia (September 1-10) or “Darling shine!”, a group painting, sculpture and photography exhibition by ArtZone 42 Gallery (September 11-20). Walk into Kalogera Hall to find Lebanese artist Hawini’s acrylics presented by Kapopoulos FineArts Gallery in an exhibition entitled “BLOSSOM IN COLOURS” (June 21-30) as well as Vasilis Antonakos by the same organiser, showcasing his “Serial Faces” series (August 1-10).

MYCONIAN COLLECTION

AN EMBLEMATIC PERSONALITY of Mykonos, the poet, writer and essayist Panayotis Kousathanas turns back the clock to the time when Mykonos welcomed its first devotees… A LAND ABLAZE BY THE ABUNDANCE OF LIGHT Elli Nezeriti’s first meeting with Mykonos and Piatigialos in 1950 Born in 1920, educated in France and something of a renaissance woman, Elli Nezeriti was one of the most loyal friends of post-war Mykonos, building friendships and strong bonds on the island. A director and scriptwriter, Elli has directed, among others, a film shot entirely on Mykonos and Delos in 19601961 based on her own script. From her emotive first book, Mykonos, I have selected for Mutterings IV her narrative by the name of “On the Way to Piatigialos” [Platis Gialos beach], for sentimental reasons. That was the site of the village of grandpa Panagiotis and nanna Anezo; where my cousins and I swam all alone every time our fathers took us to see the elderly couple; where I went on to spend my summers up to 2002. Today, everyone has heard of the sandy beaches of Platis Gialos and Psarou, split by the cape we call Takounou (or Takounas). Few though, only those on the older side like myself, remember these places as Nezeriti describes them: virgin, authentic, with crystal waters, sensual light and scents, lacking all that is pretentious and hollow today… The Piatigialos essay is by no means the only notable part of Nezeriti’s short book. Its pages, sanctified by time’s passing – almost seventy years have passed since its publication – have genuine things to say in a voice that is quiet, tranquil and full of love. They speak of the harmony and beauty of the island’s nature, its people of that time, its locations which are now renowned the world round but are spoilt while they used to be untouched and untainted. Of the island’s benevolent spirit, Mando, who would step down from her pedestal to walk the Town at night before she was driven away by the night-time partiers and the spirits of present day. Of the beautiful Mykonian girl called Ernoula, who could see spirits. And of even more. Nezeriti writes: “I stayed for hours at Piatigialos as if kept there by something. I knew that I would never have the chance to live again that very moment of departure…” Those same words come to mind in a different garb, as written five years later by Albert Camus, about that very place: “Finally; happiness, happiness nearing tears. I would like to keep beside me, to hold tight this enormous joy that I though know will be lost” (1955)… Elli Nezeriti’s first visit to Piatigialos was in August of 1950. And it was a little earlier, a few days after the feast of the Apodosis of the Dormition, when at the sandy, wind-sheltered outer wall, touching the dry stone of the reed partitions which separated the sand from the plots, blossomed on its own, unwatered, the humble but aromatic sea daffodil before being trampled by thousands of tourist feet, generously spreading white light and intoxicating perfume – the one Latin-minded botanists like to call Pancratium maritimum. Elli Nezeriti, thirty years young back then, all alone on Piatigialos’ sand in the company of the murmur of the waves, and of the sea daffodils. Impossible, younger generations who haven’t lived this unique experience would say. [The remainder of my commentary on traveller Elli Nezeriti’s inspired essay is available in my recently published book]

The Myconian Collection Art Show Maia Kerchache and Sandrine Pivaty invite us to a celebration of art at the Myconian Villa Collection. For the second year, influential artwork from all over the world travels to Mykonos, an island that has become a melting pot of art movements and perspectives. CURATORS AND ART ADVISORS Maia Kerchache and Sandrine Pivaty of Kerchache Pivaty Art Consulting have come together to challenge the art scene by launching a potent new annual meeting of artists. In 2018, this initiative is given a new name – The Myconian Collection Art Show – and a strong theme: Sea, Art & Sun. So this year, Myconian Collection guests are not only guaranteed first-class service and relaxation but also more entertainment and art in the same place. And it all starts upon their arrival at the lobby… This new-generation art tour hosts the work of five artists from different countries. The result is an exclusive project, a fusion of original paintings, art photography and drawings. The street art of French painter Olivier Pioch mixes contemporary and urban culture. Highly emotive and strong in their message, his pieces convey freedom and sensitivity. Camilo Alvarez from Colombia draws with a plain mechanical pencil. Using fine, precise, even obsessive lines, he goes beyond the abstract to interweave figures and shapes with stunning results. Ingrid Baars’

signature style grew from collage to full-blown digital treatment of her art. Her latest work, “L’Afrique!” is a fascinating ongoing project inspired by the richness of African cultural heritage in all its diversity. Bringing together traditional African objects and contemporary, real women, the artist studies and explores beauty through powerful imagery. P-Dram was born in Tehran and lives in Paris. Although he studied Persian miniature with Abbas Moayeri, he went on to focus on geometrical shapes evolving into elaborate patterns. Assembled like jigsaw puzzles, they have bright colours and an internal rhythm that endlessly leads our gaze from one point to the other and from red, blue, yellow and green to black and white. Last but not least, Josue Comoe is a young artist who, through drawings and paintings, addresses diversity and its representation in art. His pieces represent souls all aspiring to engage with ours. Myconian Villa Collection guests are encouraged to get in touch with Maia to receive information and expert insight into the work of these extraordinary artists.

Mykonos

History of an Island By Uta Wanche - Photography: Dimitris Petratzas

Mykonos is not only the most famous cosmopolitan island of Greece, renowned for its exciting nightlife. It also boasts a rich and long history that dates back almost 5000 years. 052

MYCONIAN COLLECTION

ACCORDING TO HESYCHIOS, Mykonos derives from the word Mykon meaning heap and themonia, heap of stones on account of the impressive granite boulders that seem to have been heaped by some supernatural hand. Ancient Greeks had created the myth that under the rocks were buried the giants killed by Hercules, who came to the aid of his father Zeus during the Gigantomachy. Archaeological finds on Mykonos indicate the existence of a significant culture on the island, dating back to to the Late Neolithic period (5th & 4th millennium BC). Ionians settle on Mykonos colonising it after expelling its previous inhabitants. Later on, when Delos was highly populated, Mykonos became very important as a significant port for supplies and transit. It was also an important cultural and religious centre, and many travelled frequently between the two islands. During the time of the Roman occupation and the Middle Ages, Mykonos was part of the Roman Empire and then the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantines defended it against the Arabs in the 7th century and maintained control until the 13th century, when Mykonos came under the control of the Ghizzi dynasty in 1207 and was eventually handed to the Venetians in 1390. In 1537, still under the Venetians, Mykonos was attacked by Hayreddin Barbarossa, a legendary admiral of Suleiman the Magnificent. The Ottomans took over, imposing a system of self-governance which consisted of a governor and an appointed council of syndics. After centuries of foreign rule, the Mykonians took over a leading role in the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Ottomans, spearheaded by acclaimed national heroine Mando Mavrogenous. Mykonos was part of the free Greek State since the first day of its independence in 1830. Sailors and merchants quickly revived the island’s economy, consolidating trade relations with south Russia, Moldavia and Wallachia. However, after the opening of the Corinth Canal in 1904 and with the beginning of the First World War, Mykonos’ well-developed economy started to decline and, consequently, many locals left to find work in mainland Greece or abroad – especially in the United States. However, it wasn’t long before tourism rose as the answer to the problems of the local economy, starting with significant archaeological excavations taking place in Delos in 1873, which brought fascinating Ancient Greek artefacts and structures to light. As a result, lovers of Greek history and mythology began taking an interest in the region and, along with the ancient ruins, started to explore the island of Mykonos and partake in the celebrated Greek hospitality. In the 1930s, Mykonos started to become a popular destination for famous artists, politicians and wealthy Europeans, who had already noticed the island. Those were the first days of Mykonos as a hotspot for the international jet-set. After the dark years of World War II, Mykonos came back to life to blossom into the stunning cosmopolitan destination of the rich and famous – and not only – that we know it as today.

MYKONOS WAS PART OF the free Greek State since the first day of its independence in 1830. Sailors and merchants quickly revived the island’s economy, consolidating trade relations with south Russia, Moldavia and Wallachia.

Delos

from A to Z THIS PURE LAND POSSESSED the power to not only build its own legend using mosaics and marble masterpieces but to become synonymous with the unique light of the sun, the sea and the landscape of the Greek islands. Right next to Delos, Mykonos remained for many years just a humble stop for mesmerised travellers who would spend the night on the then unimportant island of Mykonos yearning for the moment the small boat would lead them to the illuminating light… Delos: all its secrets in alphabetical order. ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF DELOS –The museum’s building was erected in 1904 by the Archaeological Society of Athens to house the excavation findings. B.C. –It seems that the earliest signs of habitation on the island are in the second half of the 3rd millennium BC (2500-2000 BC) on Mount Cynthus. COSMOPOLITANISM –It’s true that Delos was the first hub of authentic cosmopolitanism in the world. This was where various peoples lived in harmony, each respecting each other’s confessions and cultures. DELOS OR DHILOS. –In Greek, it means “clear” or “brought to light”. EXCAVATION –The French School of Archaeology began digs on Delos during the reign of King George I of Greece, in 1873. The first excavations were to continue until 1894, when they were interrupted due to the temporary shift of the French School’s attention to Delphi. FORBIDDEN –Today, overnight stays and swimming are strictly forbidden on Delos, as is docking boats. Back in time, though, ancient historian Thucydides wrote that in approximately 425 BC, the law stated that pregnant women and moribund people had to leave the island. In other words, the inhabitants of Delos could not die on their island, and neither could they be born there. GRYPARI AMARYLLIS –She’s recognised as one of the best certified licensed tour guides of the island, born and raised in Mykonos. Find her at grypari_amar@yahoo.gr

HERITAGE –In 1990, UNESCO added Delos to the World Heritage List, describing it as “an exceptionally extensive and rich” archaeological site. ISLAND –Delos, a rugged granite mass about 3.4 km2 in surface area, is one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades. Also known called Lesser Delos, it lies between Rhenea – or Greater Delos – to the west and Mykonos to the east. JEWISH COMMUNITY –You might be surprised to hear that this is where the oldest synagogue of the Diaspora, in the world, has been found up until today, dating back to the 1st century BC. This is another archaeological find closely linked to the cosmopolitan era of the island during Hellenistic times, where people from different cultures coexisted peacefully for about 100 years. KOUROS –Apollo’s Kouros, the Colossus of the Naxians, used to stand at the northwest corner of the House of the Naxians on Delos. Today, only its large marble base remains, in place, on which used to tower over the island an enormous statue of the god Apollo approximately 9.5 metres in height. To the west of the base, remain another two pieces of the statue’s body. LEAGUE –The Delian League was a political and military association of approximately 150 ancient Greek city states during the 5th century BC, united under the influence of the city of Athens. MOSAICS –We find mosaics on the floors of the houses of Delos. Their designs have given the surviving houses their name – house of Dionysus, of the Dolphins, of the Masks, of the Trident, of Triton… Featuring simple or geometrical designs, or even or devoid of patterns, the Delos mosaics impress especially when religious or mythological (Dionysus, Athena, Hermes, Punic goddess Tanit), natural (dolphins, tigers, panthers, fish), sea-themed (anchor, trident), or theatrical (masks, satyrs). NAXOS –Near the end of the 7th century BC, the people of Naxos dedicated the so-called Terrace of the Lions to Apollo. Marble lions stand in line facing east, towards the Sacred Lake. Many archaeologists beleive that, there were originally 16 lions, but only five and parts of three remain today, while the headless body of one more adorns the Arsenal of Venice in Italy.

A trip to the sacred island of Delos from A to Z reminds us how ancient travellers arrived here not for Mykonos, as we do now, but solely for the energy that Delos exuded. 054

OIKOS –“House” in Greek. The well-preserved houses on Delos have given archaeologists information about life in that era. A corridor led from the main door to a court, where some homes featured a peristyle (roofed corridor) and mosaic floor. Many of the wealthy houses were equipped with cisterns to store the rainwater. PURIFICATION –Following an oracle, Peisistratus, the tyrant of Athens, proceeded to a partial purification and “purified” the island for the first time. As Thucydides wrote, “not all of it, but what can be seen from the sanctuary”. That is to say, Peisistratus had the graves in this part of Delos removed. This event took place during Peisistratus’ third reign, so probably in 540-528 BC. QUARTERS –Three important city quarters, the Quarter of the Theatre, Lake/Skardana Quarter and the Stadium Quarter have been found. The former is the oldest, and that’s why it does not follow urban planning patterns. On the contrary, the latter two have wider streets leading from north to south and east to west, following a grid plan. None of the quarters appears to have been segregated according to race or wealth. The rich lived next to the poor and Greeks next to foreigners. RIVER –In ancient times, rainwater formed River Inopus, which flowed down the slopes of Mount Cynthus. Streaming down to the lowest part of the island, north of the shrine, the same water also formed the Sacred Lake. SANCTUARY OF APOLLO –The most important spot on the island. TANIT –An apotropaic symbol found at the main entrance of the private home of the Dolphins. It is the sign of Punic-Phoenician goddess Tanit, believed to protect from bad luck. UNINHABITED –The island is uninhabited, with the exception of Greek archaeologists, some French archaeologists from the French

School of Archaeology, workers and security guards. . VIEW –Head up the path starting at the southeast corner of the Theatre Quarter to reach Mount Cynthus, a 113 metre hill at the centre of the island. From here, the view is impressive. On a clear day you can see most of the islands of the Cyclades. WEST COAST –Small boats carry visitors from Mykonos to Delos’ commercial port, on its west coast. XENOPHOBIA –Two years ago, the ancient theatre of Delos came back to life after 2,100 years to house the show “Hecuba, a Refugee on Delos”, based on the monologues of the queen from Eurupides’ tragedies “Hecuba” and “Troades” and directed by Nikos Karageorgos. Prominent Greek actress Despoina Bebedeli played the lead, sending a powerful message against xenophobia and linking the cosmopolitan past of open-minded Delos with the xenophobic present of the refugee crisis. YOUNG BLOOD –According to Greek mythology, Delos was revealed (in Greek, “revealed” shares the same root as “Delos”) when Poseidon touched his trident on the surface of the sea, after the island had been sailing the archipelago for years. Zeus chained it to the bottom of the Aegean with a chain made of diamonds so that Leto could find refuge there, beneath a palm tree, to give birth to the two new gods: first Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, and then Apollo. ZONE –A special economic zone and arguably one of the first examples in history of the economic model of the SEZ. The unique historical value of Delos also comes from the fact that it was the first Free Zone. Located at the heart of the Aegean and the trade routes of the time, it was exempt from taxes. It was pronounced a free port by the Romans in 166 BC, which greatly contributed to the impressive development of the island.

CLEOPATRA HOUSE Headless statues of the owners Cleopatra and Dioskourides stand near the entrance of this house. They are remains of an ancient villa, one of the high-class residences in the theatre quarter.

Inspired by Delos

The Director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, Dimitris Athanasoulis, reveals the plan to conserve and manage the sacred archaeological site of Delos.

The €550,000 donation from the Kanellopoulos Institute to restore part of the Stoa of Philip V of Macedon was a good start since, as you have said, Delos needs sponsors, and potentially even sponsors to adopt certain monuments. Do certain Delos monuments have priority? At the moment, the Ephorate is focused on integrating Delos to European programmes. After we have submitted our application, we will look into the needs of monuments that can be covered through private initiative. It goes without saying that citizens’ offers are very welcome since they do not only provide credits for the monuments but they directly and organically link Delos to local community – a bond crucial to its survival. It had been deemed necessary for Delos specifically to upgrade its visitor infrastructure and add certain amenities. What exactly would be ideal for the site? The Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades is currently putting together an integrated plan to conserve and manage Delos based on its singular characteristics. In this context, we address issues of customer service, accessibility to the island, visitor footfall and paths etc. According to reports, necessary funds to build a new museum reach €20 million, which of course has to be sourced. Is there a museum you dream for Delos? Our complete management plan includes a new approach to museum infrastructure on the island. Our aim is to integrate the exhibits into the archaeological site and take down new structures so that visitors can enjoy a unique experience of travelling back in time. The estimated cost of these operations and museum infrastructure is indeed in that range. Among the goals of the “Vanity” exhibition as set by the Ephorate was to renovate the buildings of the Cyclades museums and renew their exhibitions, which feature leading samples of Greek art and architecture. How has this plan evolved, and how does it relate to Delos? As you know, Vanity was a milestone in archaeological museum exhibitions internationally. This year, the Ephorate is developing another phase of its programme, namely numerous periodic exhibitions in various Cyclades islands. In most of them, contemporary artists are inspired by the antiquities and showcase their artwork right next to the exhibits in our archaeological museums. At the same time, “Cycladic Snapshots”, the successful modal exhibition we organised at the Byzantine Museum in Athens is now touring the Cyclades isles. We are thus holding exhibitions this summer at the following museums: Delos, Thera, Byzantine Museum of Naxos, Sagri, Naxos, Koufonisi, Archaeological Museum of Andros and Archaeological Museum of Milos.

GIORGOS SYRIANOS THIRD GENERATION CHEESE MAKER. That means Giorgos is up to his neck in all the secret recipes for the cheeses his great grandmother used to make, which were improved upon by each generation. It didn’t take long for tradition to meet the entrepreneurial spirit, when Giorgos Syrianos and a friend and partner of his – a Mykonos local who studied abroad, with in-depth knowledge of finance – started a model cheese dairy in Agios Lazaros. They didn’t just want to make tasty cheeses. Their challenge was to persevere through the difficulties of a venture and survive the harsh reality of Greece’s financial crisis, turning their dream into reality. Giorgos Syrianos’ cheeses are the continuation of his family tradition. Xinotyro, tyrovolia, niari, vrasto, kopanisti, Greek yoghurt – all unique and connected to the island, they bear the Mykonos Farmers stamp. Behind them hides an investment of dreams and significant funds. The cheese dairy of Giorgos Syrianos is a family jewel. He describes it as though talking about a valuable heirloom. Architectural simplicity and superiority, modern surgical steel equipment, double glazing and disabled access, a lack of preservatives and chemical enhancers. The sheep are allowed to graze freely in order to meet increased demands in milk. Everything down to the smallest detail has been studied carefully in order to harmoniously combine the past and the present, and to highlight the farming tradition of a local community that once consisted of families that each made their own cheese. The cheese dairy can be visited. mykonosfarmers.com 062

THE “PAGA” IN GIALOS IF THERE IS ONE HABIT that’s hard to break, it’s the street market that local fishermen hold every morning in the area of Gialos. As long as you get there early enough to enjoy the “paga” display, the fresh fish and “baksevanika” – fresh vegetables sold in crates by local producers straight from their own gardens, their “baxedes”. By the time the visitors wake up from a night of hard partying everything will have disappeared and the stands will be shiny and clean. Everything here happens early in the morning. If you are looking to find authentic Mykonos, you just have to sacrifice some hours of sleep and get to the “entrance” to the town. There, you will easily discern who the “morning people” of the land are, who don’t change habits easily. Gialos was once the heart of the area, but to this day tradition is still alive and kicking here. Even if one cannot enjoy local products, they can discover gastronomical treasures such as courgette flowers, purple amaranth (a type of green), brown-eyed Mykonos beans (black-eyed peas), plums, and aromatic plants such as oregano, thyme, fennel, spearmint, sage and marjoram.

NIKOS ASIMOMYTIS IT WAS NO COINCIDENCE when an auditor for the Bank of Greece left Athens behind and returned to his father’s island in 1994. He chose the authenticity of a daily life consisting of manual labour and farm life in Mykonos’ hinterland, changing his personal vision of how he thought things would go. Nikos Asimomytis went from teaching and technocratic programmes to renting a plot of land that belongs to a monastery in Ano Meria – to planting vines, filling it with chickens, turkeys, guinea fowl, rabbits and beehives, and creating Mykonos Vioma Organic Farm. The area had no connection to the tourism side that was rapidly growing back then. “However, the land”, he tells us, “has great power”. Mainly, it has the power to draw you to it and not let you get your priorities mixed up. The pace of life on the farm is completely different to that of the “other” Mykonos. Almost 10 acres of vines require Nikos’ care. Apart from the wine that Nikos Asimomytis used to make and gift to his partners in Athens, he now produces vinegar, vine leaves, grape molasses as well as table grapes. There are 20 hives in Mykonos Vioma and their honey is exceptional. Organic seasonal vegetables are grown in the garden and his family – along with the farm animals – welcomes visitors on tours and tastings of wine and traditional Mykonos products, or they plan events together that bear the mark of authentic Mykonos hospitality. mykonosvioma.com/index.html MYCONIAN COLLECTION

DIMITRA NAZOU ANYONE YOU ASK ON THE ISLAND about her will identify her as the soul of the Mykonos Folklore Museum. A woman who has served the tradition that has kept memories of the past alive despite frantic tourism development. Dimitra Nazou has what we call in Greece “the golden touch”. A lover of handmade creations and an artist, she was active in the Cultural Folklore Women’s Society of Mykonos, the Society of Friends of Delos & Rineia, the Asia Minor Society of Mykonos and the Society of Friends of the Mykonos Folklore Museum, in an attempt to spread a simple idea: That the past is as important as the present and determines the future. To this day, this woman continues on this same course. She supports folklore events, she researches and records Mykonos folk culture, and she is passionate about weaving and traditional textiles. She has conducted significant research on the renowned Mykonos textiles of the 20th century in cooperation with archaeologist Panagiotis Chatzidakis, as well as on lace and its manual techniques. When you speak with her, a different Mykonos enchants you. A Mykonos that still dances at fairs, that remembers island stories, myths and legends, that is full of colloquialisms, still uses a crochet hook, weaves on a loom, and, mainly, breathes and draws its strength from its roots. Dimitra Nazou believes in the continuation of customs and traditions, and in the power of women to use what was delivered to them by previous generations, turning it into cultural wealth. 066

IRENE SYRIANOU “TO FIND ME YOU WILL have to search for me”, is one of the first things this young woman says. She was born and bred on Mykonos with close ties to Rineia and Delos. Working as a young woman on Delos, she had the good fortune of seeing the mosaics up close – and a magical relationship developed between her and them. Each and every mosaic in the space entered her soul and she started to learn their craft, mentored and taught in her efforts by mosaic creator and conservator Nikos Tolis. At present, Irene Syrianou together with just one partner – “with whom we have the same hand” – makes everything from replicas of antiquities to contemporary visual creations in her mosaic workshop and gift shop in Mykonos Town, behind the Gialos area. The tiles and anvil keep her company throughout the summer. In recent years she has started teaching the craft of the mosaic in workshops organised by the Municipality of Mykonos to dozens of students from the island, while she also participates in the “Agoni Grammi Gonimi” programme, teaching at schools on distant small islands of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. Through her craft she feels that she is travelling in the same dream as all those who came from her land in the past, especially from Delos. Irene Syrianou follows the ancient method of cutting tiles by hand and relies on the utilisation of recyclable materials. Her work can be found in public spaces and private collections. Her mosaics can also be purchased in archaeological museum gift shops throughout Greece. www.art-mosaic.gr

What is it about Mykonos that inspires you and what are your favourite materials to work with? My favourite materials to work with are silk and natural textiles, mostly in pastel hues for the summer – but some of my clothes also feature vivid colours. White is the quintessential summer colour to me, and Mykonos is full of whiteness in all its aspects. My source of inspiration is the unique sense of hospitality of the Myconian Collection hotels and resorts as well as the essence, the incomparable charm and beauty of Mykonos that is reflected in every nook and cranny of the Myconian hotels. If you were asked to create an iconic piece to embody the spirit of this island, what would it be like? I think the perfect choice would be a kaftan that’s completely white in a minimal but also strong silhouette – a statement piece.

Business in Paradise Fashion designer Yvonne Bosnjak is inspired by Cycladic white and knows how to highlight Mykonos’ finest qualities.

PASTEL TONES AND WHITE DREAMS come together to form a world of fashion and focused style – it is the wonderful world of Yvonne Bosnjak. What is the Myconian Collection woman like? What do you keep in mind about her when designing your summer collection? I think she’s a go-getter not afraid to show her femininity – she’s confident and prefers minimal, contemporary and strong silhouettes. She’s a woman who wants to feel comfortable in clothes that embrace her personality and highlight her assets. On the island, life is always more relaxed. But colours and designs should still be compatible with our personality.

How do international trends influence Mykonos in your opinion? Could it be that the opposite is true and Mykonos creates its own fashion to influence the rest of the world? Mykonos has a strong personality in all its guises. It’s an international destination visited by everyone – Greeks but also people from Europe, Eastern countries, America… Mykonos is influenced but also influences, and not just fashion. But there is always the feeling of the Greek island with the predominant white and blue of the sea that prevails, so that international trends that happen to enter the Mykonos market merge with local minimalism and beauty. Where on Mykonos do you truly relax and recharge your batteries for the winter to come? Where else? At the Myconian Collection hotels and spas. They’re serene in a way that is relaxing and inspiring at the same time. To me, they are the go-to destination for anyone who wants exemplary hospitality, Greek island-style relaxation, exquisite customer service and all the comforts we seek when on holiday. As a result, the commercial art and design scene has been on the rise. Signature pieces, unique creations and excellently constructed objects and pieces of furniture have elevated the island’s creative scene, ranking it amongst the best in the world. Not sacrificing innovation and ideas no matter of the signs of the times. What was the last picture you took on Mykonos with your phone camera? What was in the frame? Nine cruise ships at the Mykonos port with the sunset in the background. What is Delos to you? Is it still an ideal destination? Delos is the light. THIS ALL-DAY and all-night beach retreat does not discriminate based on age. If you’re young at heart and eager to explore its opportunities, you are very welcome indeed – and so are your family and your friends. Thomas Heyne and Mario Hertel, the masterminds behind Scorpios, explain that they want their creation to be “an invitation to unwind, let go and reconnect, which takes on a very new relevance in today’s hyper-accelerated pace”. And, as anyone who’s experienced their haven can tell you, they’ve achieved this and much more. On a sun-drenched southern tip of Mykonos, surrounded by a protected nature reserve, this gathering place encompasses a beach, a whitewashed stone building, stages for daily sunset rituals, and spacious terraces spilling onto the Cycladic coastline, always complemented by the sound of soulful, fascinating music. The openair, open-plan Scorpios Restaurant serves organic, locally-sourced meals at large communal tables. Set high above the beach affording stunning views over Paraga and Kavos lagoons, the Scorpios Terrace is the meet-and-mingle social spot. But there’s also a more spiritual side to Scorpios which links to ancient Greek heritage – the illustrious “agora”, the meeting place of Athenians and the heart of the city’s social life. Thomas and Mario speak of “the cultural shift from nightclubbing to afternoon ease”, which they’ve addressed by offering visitors ample opportunity to partake not only in lounging, sunset gazing and gourmet dining but also talks, workshops and meditation and movement classes.

We would be remiss if we did not address how this space essentially breathes music: “Our aim is to explore new paths of music, choosing from the best artists and DJs”, explain the duo, who focus on the electro and instrumental genres. And so they do, inviting and featuring interesting, diverse people who have something meaningful to share – from healers, movement teachers and visual artists to experimental musicians. Is anyone missing? Not really, but the proprietors humour us when asked about their dream guests. “We would like to see Quentin Tarantino and the Dalai Lama at Scorpios. We would also like to invite Google executive Eric Schmidt, who we’ve already had as a guest here, to revisit us.” It’s not because of these men’s fame that they’ve been selected but because of their spirit and vision, which fits right in. Ultimately, it’s the captivating energy of Scorpios Beach Club, its stunning nature, bohemian, communal approach and the passion of the people who run it that set the tone and make it a place like no other. “Scorpios is our real home”, Thomas and Mario say, and they can’t wait to share it with even more people from all over the world.

GEORGIOS & Co The Art of Gold Jewellery THE MAN BEHIND Georgios & Co Fine Jewellery reveals how and why the results of his exquisite work are so much like Mykonos itself. What makes a piece of jewellery timeless? What is at the heart of the Georgios & Co Fine Jewellery collections? Designing and creating Georgios & Co jewellery is a complex process that requires a high aesthetic and excellent craftsmanship. It’s this aesthetic that will inform the design of the piece and help make it unique and ultimately timeless. Craftsmanship is the second but also vitally important ingredient that ensures precision and quality for every piece. It’s our dream and passion to make jewellery that our customers will hold on to for life. How do your pieces incorporate Mykonos and Delos? Georgios & Co has a long history on the island of Mykonos. In fact, two of the first collections we ever designed were the Mykonos Collection and the Delos Collection. Contemporary but timeless at the same time, the Mykonos Collection encompasses the light, the wind, the sea – elements which abound on the island – and draws from the cosmopolitan character and vibe that Mykonos exudes. The Delos Collection comprises unique pieces of jewellery inspired by a truly matchless location, Delos. Created centuries ago, exceptionally beautiful aspects of Delos have been transformed by designer Georgios into jewellery that leaves a lasting impression. It wouldn’t be inaccurate to say that anyone lucky enough to have an item from the collection has acquired a part of Delos’ history. What are in your opinion those singular elements that have helped you stand out from the competition within the Mykonos market? The quality of our items and their timelessness, our excellent service, and ultimately the fact that we truly believe in and love what we’re doing. How do you spend your time on Mykonos? Does the island’s unique beauty steal some of your entrepreneurial time? Mykonos is indeed a truly inimitable place. It’s our choice to live on this wonderful island, and we wouldn’t change it for the world. The architecture, the sun, sea and wind are all elements that give us ample inspiration and drive to continue to design and create jewellery. Do you plan to teach your art to your sons in the future? Both my sons have expressed an interest in the world of jewellery from a very young age. They marvel at the process of making a piece by hand and they’re curious about it. Their presence in our workshop and our stores gives us joy and fills us with energy. We believe they will be worthy successors of our family tradition and take what we started creating 40 years ago even further. After your admittedly impressive career trajectory, what is your life philosophy? Do what you love. Love what you do. This very simple choice is our life philosophy, and we believe it’s echoed in the best way possible in the jewellery we make.

MORE THAN A PLACE TO US AND TO OUR GUESTS who return year on year to live as part of our family, Mykonos is not just a place. It’s a source of endless inspiration that, even after all this time, still brings new experiences and new ideas. That’s why we have made sure that the hotels of the Myconian Collection are also much more than spaces of luxury and relaxation. We have always done everything we can to make sure our properties are destinations where our guests can share in the spirit of Mykonos; microcosms where everyone is unique in their own right, as are their needs and preferences. We hope that you too will come to think of our hotels as your second home – a comfortable, personal but also exciting space where you are always welcome and can’t wait to get back to. Nothing is left to chance here. Every detail, every convenience, every corner we have created is a way to bring people closer and share experiences. With every passing year, we discover new ways of communicating our passion. We live with our guests, we share ideas, we form real bonds. We all have at least one thing in common: Our love for Mykonos; its light and its truth, its sea and tradition, its sand and its unique spirit. This island has given the Myconian Collection family limitless inspiration, opportunity and energy. We hope it does the same for you.

Have a wonderful stay! Panos, Markos, Vangelis and Marios Daktylides 082

heritage by Diana Vives

A family legacy The inspiring story of how the native Myconian family of George Daktylides built a hospitality empire which includes nine of the leading luxury hotels on the island. A true testament to the essence of the Mykonos soul.

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE Besides visitors to a few private villas, the island was a well-guarded secret before the yachts and cruise ships of the Sixties began to drop anchor on their way to view the magnificent ancient ruins of Delos.

George Daktylides convinced his brothers to invest in a vehicle, and before long, with a fleet of twenty-five buses, they ran the island’s only public transport network. “As kids, we sold tickets on our dad’s buses, which was a little boy’s dream”, says Markos Daktylides.

heritage The family’s dedication to giving back to the island finds expression in environmental conservation initiatives, local sourcing and consistent support to the Cycladic communities.

THERE IS SOMETHING about a family business and its unique synthesis of heritage, loyalty and emotion which captures the essence of luxury and accounts for the strength of some of the world’s greatest portfolios. This quality is at the heart of the Myconian Collection’s success. “My brothers and I are as proud of our roots as we are of our growth”, says Vangelis, about his parents George and Eleftheria Daktylides, founders of the Collection that today counts nine of the leading luxury hotels on Mykonos, three of which are members of Relais & Chteaux. Mykonos during George Daktylides’ youth was very different from that of today. The island ran a barter economy well into the Fifties. “My mother, along with everyone else who lived off the land, will tell you that they traded their cheese, sausages, cured fish and produce with the townsfolk for imports such as sugar, flour, rice, coffee and spaghetti, not to mention the allimportant cigarettes, sold individually from a big box”, Panos explains. Besides visitors to a few private villas, the island was a well-guarded secret before the yachts and cruise ships of the Sixties began to drop anchor on

their way to view the magnificent ancient ruins of Delos. Onassis and Jackie O were followed by Princess Soraya, Grace Kelly, Brando and Liz Taylor, to mention but a few, and Christian Dior famously crowned the town’s tailor, Josef Salachas ‘le roi du pantalon’ (‘the king of trousers’), inspiring Givenchy to collaborate on a couture collection. The secret was out, and close on its heels came the boho chic of the Seventies. George Daktylides was a handsome young man in a hurry when he married the beautiful young Eleftheria from Delos. On completing his military duty, he had returned home with big dreams. He drove a bus that carried men and materials from town to the barite mines, and soon convinced his brothers to invest with him in a vehicle of their own. Before long, they were operating the only public transport on the island, with a fleet of twenty-five buses on which the four boys cut their commercial milk teeth. “As kids, we sold tickets on our dad’s buses, which was a little boy’s dream”, says Markos. Concurrently, George started trading in cement, bricks and sand that he was hauling to the mines and construction sites, and for ten years mixed concrete and brought in coils of rebar used for structural reinforcement. “I can still remember the ringing sound of both of my grandfathers hammering to uncoil the steel just below our house. Everything was done by hand.” Tourist accommodation on the island had grown modestly with the state-funded construction and informal room and board offers, but demand from visitors drawn to experience the warm hearts, rich culture and exceptional hospitality of the locals continued to grow. It was not uncommon for cash-strapped backpackers in the Eighties to be invited to open up their sleeping bags on private terraces under the stars. So, with his burgeoning contacts in trading and construction, George decided to undertake a development of his own, seeing an opportunity to build the first hotel on Mykonos outside of town. Marios recounts: “He came home one day on a Caterpillar that he’d picked up secondhand, and it remained his favourite set of wheels long after he could have any car he wanted.” The well-worn

but solid 920 four-cylinder diesel loader went on to dig the foundations of his first four hotels, starting with the 25-room Kohili in 1979. Set high above town and looking directly onto the seven famous 16th century windmills, the charming little hotel commanded sweeping views of the Aegean by day and the glittering spectacle of the town by night. Kohili was the first private hotel on Mykonos outside Chora, and an instant hit, followed by Korali a year later to double the room count. Their success was built on the back of hard work. Eleftheria made breakfast for all the guests and did the housekeeping and laundry, as well as providing meals for the 40 construction workers who were busy erecting the new hotel. She was also raising four sons, and somehow still found the time to take her boys for a daily swim. “I can still smell the cake she baked for the hotel in our kitchen”, Vangelis recalls. “She gets emotional when we talk about those times... My parents would sacrifice anything to create opportunities for us. Dad worked from morning to night and invested all the profits back into the business. My mother had one good pair of Sunday shoes which she would only wear before walking into church”. The personal touch and attention to detail that to this day defines the Myconian Collection, inspired a loyal clientele and a reputation that spread by word of mouth. Six years later, Kyma and Kalypso joined Kohili and Korali to form what became known as ‘K-Hotels’. In 1986, in anticipation of growing demand for luxury destinations, George purchased a plot on the south coast, above the bay of Platys Gialos and built the island’s first 5-star hotel, the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chteaux. “By then, my parents had realised that we needed an education in international management”, says Vangelis. All four sons attended in turn the premier establishment of its kind, the world-renowned hotel school in Lausanne. “There was never a question in our minds whether this was what we wanted to do”. Once all four brothers were back on the island, they were ready for a new challenge: the conquest of Elia bay. If the seaside beaches around the peninsula are the golden crown of Mykonos, few are said

to gleam as brightly as the broad swathe of fine sand on the south side of the island. So, in securing the most scenic cliffs and gentle slope of fields that joined them with the ocean, the family acquired the perfect setting for the new stars in the Myconian Collection’s luxury constellation: the 5-Star Royal in 2000 and the Imperial in 2002, followed by the Villas, Utopia and Avaton. Throughout this time, the Collection never lost the sense of family and organic growth. Informed by the family’s managerial and operational philosophy, it pervades the relationships between the Daktylides family, the island and the staff – and flows into guests’ experience of warm and personalised service, as well as the privileged relationships that discreetly open doors to the island’s best suppliers and services. The family remains firmly rooted in Mykonos. Their children go to school on the island. And their dedication to give back to the island finds expression in environmental conservation initiatives, local sourcing and consistent support to the Cycladic communities: Waste is recycled, worn linen is donated to old age homes, prisons and monasteries in the Cyclades, seawater is desalinated. Even nowadays, five years after stepping down as CEO, George Daktylides remains a busy man. His way of relaxing is getting involved in the new projects, as well as making sure that all nine grandchildren have a steady supply of “real” food. He does his rounds to every home once a week in a Toyota Hilux, with trays of farm eggs on the passenger seat and home-bred lamb and goat’s meat in the back, as well as cheese and cake made by Eleftheria. “As you see, I’ve got my retirement sorted out”, says Vangelis. “And it’s a good thing that we are four brothers, because our parents’ shoes are very big to fill”. “Someone once asked me what advice our parents gave us along the way. My answer was short: they led by example. In French, I believe there is a term for it, “l’ducation silencieuse”. We are each other’s most honest critic, and we are loyal allies. When we balance the pragmatic demands of a competitive business with deeply rooted emotions, we’re not just planning for the financial year, but also for the next generation”.

NEVER GIVE UP Even nowadays, five years after stepping down as CEO, George Daktylides remains a busy man. His way of relaxing is getting involved in new projects.

Efisia Myconian Ambassador Relais & Châteaux THE GENUINE hospitality and marvellous service of the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chteaux leads to a unique atmosphere of laidback luxury complemented by the excellent cuisine of George Mouskeftaras, Executive Chef of the on-site restaurant Efisia. As soon as you set foot in it, you can tell why its name is a tribute to the Greek philosophical term for nature, “fysis”. Nestled in an alcove of rough-hewn stone, the restaurant is sheltered from the gentle evening breeze and blends in organically with its beautiful natural surroundings. Knowing that it embraces the Relais & Chteaux tradition takes the anticipation higher. On offer here are gourmet dishes of outstanding quality served in a luxurious, elegant atmosphere which makes Efisia one of the top dining options on the island. The staff have a love and a passion for food that they’re eager to pass on to their guests. The sentiment is certainly shared by the Executive Chef, a true master of the culinary arts. George Mouskeftaras has a talent for combining high gastronomy with carefully selected ingredients from land and sea to put together epicurean artworks characterised by simplicity, purity of flavour and that special Myconian “je ne sais quoi” that leaves guests content and eager to return. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste George’s recommendations; the poached lobster in a broth of prawns, fresh garden vegetables and artichoke hearts is exquisite, while if you prefer meat, you need to try the lamb cutlets, demi-glace reduction and smoked aubergine.

Pavilion Myconian Utopia Relais & Châteaux

TO BRING A PERFECT DAY at the Utopia to a close, treat yourself to an epicurean feast at the Pavilion Relais & Chteaux, a restaurant which has very rightly set the standard of culinary excellence on Mykonos. Along with his team, Nikos Moroglou, the Executive Chef of Pavilion, serves exceptional quality to delighted guests dining against a stunning backdrop of the sea. The sophisticated menu follows the gourmet tradition of Relais & Chteaux, which means that culinary excellence and ingredients of local origin are the order of the day, every single day. Selections include fresh fish, lobster and home-reared lamb in the tradition of Mediterranean gastronomy. Nikos describes his cuisine as pure but creative and authentically Greek. If you ask him what he considers to be his signature dish, he will probably speak about the lamb chops with smoked aubergine puree accompanied by baby potato salad, spring onions, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, spearmint and a demi-glace sauce. He says he prefers to cook the way he likes to eat rather than follow trends. What he wants instead is to create light, balanced flavours. And while you’re waiting for the mouth-watering food to reach your table, you can focus on the truly extraordinary wine list, put together by our expert sommelier. BAOS, THE FINE DINING restaurant wowing its guests with its stunning panoramic views just might be the secret star of Korali hotel. Rough-hewn stone walls offset an airy modern interior in light colours. Panagiotis Tsoukatos, the Executive Chef of Baos, likes to pick up this contrast of tradition and modernity in his food by combining traditional Greek gastronomy with a modern twist and international flair, adding innovation by playing with molecular gastronomy techniques. He is passionate about the Relais & Chteaux philosophy which brings together the art of haute cuisine and seasonal, local ingredients. Having travelled extensively, the chef has hand-picked techniques and traditions from all over the world, which he masterfully fuses with local seafood and produce at Baos. The focus here is on seafood, which Panagiotis translates into bold, clean dishes. Mykonos is the Island of Aeolus, the mythological keeper of the winds. When his daughter Alcyone lost her love, Aeolus restrained the winds and calmed the waves... Those were the Halcyon days. Celebrating

the Art of Living Showcasing a carefully curated selection of art and craft masterpieces, the Ambassador Relais & Châteaux is an art hotel that celebrates the meaning of art de vivre. IN COMBINING THE LUXURIOUS LIFESTYLE endowed by a Relais & Chteaux with the island’s incomparable atmosphere, sun, sea and the light that changes throughout the day, the Ambassador captures the very essence that has drawn the world to Mykonos for so many decades. And it is through the medium of Modern Greek Art – showcasing individual works by famous Greek painters such as Alekos Fassianos, Dimitris Dallas and Vaggelis Choursoglou as well as four works by Stergios Stamos – that contemporary Greece shines brightly at this hotel. 214

MYCONIAN COLLECTION

Inspired by the distinctive beauty of the island of Mykonos, four works of art by Greek artist Stergios Stamos specially commissioned for the Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chteaux celebrate the beauty of the Aegean and the wonders of Mykonos. Titled “Mykonos”, “Adelos”, “Linen Summer” and “You have a taste of the tempest on your lips”, the works intertwine Mykonos, the Cyclades, the Aegean and the words of Greek Nobel laureate poet Odysseus Elytis. The pieces, which have been showcased in the Ambassador’s suites since 2015, have also been inspired by the Ambassador itself, while numbered copies have been reproduced for the rest of the rooms. Drawing on the hotel’s minimalist white environment, the blue of the Aegean and summer on Mykonos, Stamos wanted, in his own words, “the vibrancy of the paintings to complement the tranquillity of the rooms and to give a sense of daydreaming. After all, this type of painting is directed more at the senses than at the mind.” The artist goes on to explain that “My piece titled ‘Adelos’ makes reference to Delos. In Greek mythology, before Apollo and Artemis were associated with the island it was presumed to drift and have no fixed position because its flat terrain suffused in the sunlight made it difficult to spot on the Aegean waters.” Meanwhile, for “Linen Summer”, he describes how linen and the colour yellow “are evocative of Greek summers in the Cyclades”. Speaking of the collaboration with the Ambassador Relais & Chteaux, Stamos explains, “When Greek art partakes in international artistic currents and creatively incorporates elements of our land, it can find the appropriate space to be displayed and communicate with people from far and wide. That certainly happens here and I am happy about it. Especially in Mykonos we have the great advantage of having many visitors from abroad. By displaying Greek art in the hotel, the Daktylides family offers great opportunities to Greek artists.” Indeed, since the summer of 2015, his pieces have attracted buying interest from hotel guests, who can find more of his art at the Kapopoulos Fine Arts Gallery on Mykonos (Enoplon Dynameon 15, Central Matogianni 846 00). FROM ALEKOS FASSIANOS TO DIMITRIS DALLAS As of last year, three new paintings by prominent Greek painters Alekos Fassianos, Dimitris Dallas and Vaggelis Choursoglou, all from the exclusive collection of the Kapopoulos Fine Art Gallery are also on display at the hotel. Alekos Fassianos, one of Greece’s most important artists,

portrays symbols of everyday Greek life in his distinctive style. He has enjoyed recognition in Greece and internationally, including receiving the prestigious title of Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres awarded by the French Republic, and being decorated by the Academy of Athens. Dimitris Dallas was born in Athens in 1982. He studied graphic design and computer graphics, DTP and web design. Also inspired by everyday life, the people he meets, the events he observes and the messages he takes in, Dallas uses spray paint, acrylic, marker pens and spatulas, which all lend a fluidity as well as a sense of movement to his work, making for very dynamic artwork.

The world’s most premium vodka, a true symbol of luxury and craftsmanship, invites us to make a statement of style and confidence. 238

MYCONIAN COLLECTION

THE TRUE CONNOISSEURS of vodka do not choose just a spirit, they choose the distinguished lifestyle and aesthetics and they pursue progression, innovation and luxury. And Belvedere is what a luxury vodka is meant to be: authentic, naturally smooth and real. Created exclusively from Polish Dankowskie Rye and quadruple-distilled with purified water from Belvedere’s own artisans to create the perfect balance of character and purity, it represents the pinnacle of vodka making tradition. Zero additives, gluten free and naturally smooth. Belvedere’s unique identity reflects the quintessence of sophisticated and nonchalant lifestyle. Perfect on the rocks, or in any of the 12 Spritzes of Belvedere Spritz Collection, a series of natural and deliciously refreshing long drinks full of fruity flavor, low in sugar and simple to create. Faithful to the popular spritz recipe, every Belvedere Spritz is prepared with a naturally flavored modifier, topped off with sparkling and tonic water, finished with two fresh garnishes. Belvedere special bottles couldn’t be nothing than exceptional and make all the difference. Belvedere’s Bespoke is the epitome of a refined night out and the ultimate addition to a truly unique nightlife experience. A vivid, special edition silver magnum bottle with a laser-cut etching of your favorite night out spots, Bespoke ensures that Belvedere stands out. Our favorite spot to enjoy Belvedere this summer is with the Aegean Sea at our tiptoes, the Mykonian breeze stroking our sun-kissed skin and the salty smell of the ocean in an idyllic late afternoon setting. This is where simplicity meets nature. The protagonists of this specific setting are people that we like to mingle with, strong personas with fashion, art and entrepreneurship running through their veins. We have carefully selected a group of Belvedere enthusiasts, a group with originality at its core and they pose effortlessly in this modern and opulent setting to inspire you to do the same, with a glass of Belvedere in your hand. Simplicity is sublimity. Cheers to that! Belvedere Bespoke Bottle for Myconian Utopia Resort Relais & Châteaux

THE LAST WORD A MORTAL ARRIVES IN DELOS, the birthplace of god Apollo. The mortal is sick and wants to negotiate the end of his life. Two goddesses of Mount Olympus, Hera and Aphrodite, ambush him. A philosophical debate on the dread of mortality and the ennui caused by immortality ensues, leading to the “godly” merging with the “human” and to the realisation that the two are and have always been indivisible. This is the plot of “Hera”, an opera by acclaimed composer, director and Deputy Director of the Greek National Theatre, Theo Abazis. Based on the titular poem by Nikos Kyriakidis, the opera will be performed on the sacred island of Delos on October 6 and 7, bringing the summer of 2018 to the brightest close – because beyond any holiday experience, it is the culture and the light of this place that will continue to dominate across the Aegean. 248
