The protection of neurons that are intrinsically vulnerable to diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS or are at risk of death due to stroke or traumatic injury is an area of immense importance. In recent years, inflammation, the blood brain barrier, stem cells, hormones and epigenetic factors have all been implicated in the rescue of neurons. Understanding their varied and complex roles in neuroprotection is critical to developing new therapies to preserve and promote brain function in the diseased or injured brain.
