WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF LATINO LEADERSHIP IN OHIO? By Ing. Héctor Valentín Fernández. President of Vendimia International LTD Executive Director of Proyecto Amanecer

Ohio’s Latino community grows like a great fabric of different colors including nationalities and cultures that contribute dramatically to the local socio-economic development. A new generation of immigrants including professionals and technicians from different areas, is inserted into the productive sector, increasing to about 10,000 businesses or firms of Latino entrepreneurs in the state. In total, these Latino businesses move a volume of over US $ 2.3 billion a year. On the other hand, the Latino workforce of more than 143,000 employees in Ohio. According to the last census, the median age of the local Latino population is under 25 years. The local Latino leadership is being built. Men and women with different talents, some professionals and many other empirical that make their way into the middle of a multicultural society in which we must break down barriers to position within any sector.

FOREWORD

“The latino leadership has a tendency of growth in Ohio. An encouraging sign given the economic and cultural contributions that we make in the State.”

t is admirable the courage of some individuals who rush into projects that arise in everyday life, emerging in response to needs identified in areas of service work. Others with good ideas and some capital succeed in establishing their own businesses selling goods or professional services. We found beginners and experienced entrepreneurs, most of which are released into projects that lead to companies and businesses in areas such as construction, restaurants, technology, retail, mechanical, multi-service, real estate, insurance carriers, infant nurseries

beauty, media, consulting and social services. Also, we highlight the professional work of doctors, lawyers, engineers and others who have achieved inserted into corporate and government enterprises, which are doing an excellent performance.

- 2014 - HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

Despite the overall growth of the Latino community in Ohio, still do not have equal representation in the political sector, which may worthily represent our community and defend their rights. Latinos have a great spirit of self-improvement, which impels us to seek success in improving the quality of life for our families. It is no less true that the State of Ohio have certain conditions that provide opportunities to Latino immigrants that come with the illusion of being successful in a personal project. This is the case of the city of Columbus, the state capital of Ohio, which has been declared intelligent, open and global city; emphasizing the goal of been a welcoming city for the immigrants who come from all nationalities. In the practice we know that many Latinos face serious difficulties that prevent them from being an integral part of the local society and feel entirely welcome. While concern has been expressed by inequalities, it is also recognized that opportunities have been available for many. There are many leaders within the anonymous, who preferred to keep a low profile, concentrating on their own businesses, companies or work and keeping away from the public stage of Latino community in Ohio. Latino leaders must overcome the barrier of mistrust between them, setting targets as a group within the community. We need to create a strong image of the emerging Latino leadership in Ohio. It also means identifying and supporting men and women who can hold representative position within the local government. We must consider that our American per-

spective is complicated because it includes cultural differences between Latin-American countries of origin, legal status, level of education, social class and economic situation. Ohio’s Latino community has talent, is a productive force with positive values that produce natural leaders among our people. We need to help new leaders to find the way to channel global influence. The Latin community has to get to the leadership, regardless of their political affiliation. We have the task of identifying our strongest leaders and support national leaders who identify with our community. We must fight for the welfare of our families and our people, being an integral part of local development and ensuring the necessary changes. Latinos must stop being passive recipients and develop a participatory roll in different scenarios of local life. The formula for that leadership lies not in adopting ideological positions of weak or prevented minority, but one that makes its way into the future to provide a better life for their children who are part of this nation. We must support our children with educational opportunities and overcome, like to hear your ideas and opinions, as well as show development opportunities outside the home and community are important objectives to form the leadership mindset. In addition to a positive family environment, every adult should show interest in what happens around them, being able to offer their time volunteering in schools and the community aware of their role in the middle. In fact, the Latino leadership is growing in Ohio. It is an encouraging sign given the economic and cultural contributions we make in the State. A new generation of Latino leaders is also being prepared to accelerate that trend. Latinos are embracing their ethnicity with more confidence than ever. As more Latinos see their heritage as an asset, their leadership potential grows. Real Latino leaders must be willing to take the risks of going where

no one has gone before and get out of your comfort zone. We have to build an organizational culture that encourages participation and risk-taking in a different environment. We need to develop strategic thinking to act objectively. These actions often require a mental separation problem or group. This can sometimes be difficult for Latinos because culture is much more oriented to feelings. We favor the development of closer relations, tend to be cooperative and confidence in ourselves. Latinos could benefit from having more programs and mentors involved in training the next generation of leaders. Many students are the first in their family to attend college,

and as a result be missing opportunities to continue their education due to lack of knowledge or guidance. We must learn to acquire power within our companies and once we do, we should not be afraid of exercising power that we won. Lately we can say that the Latino leadership of Ohio has potential and a great future, their human capital is eligible to contribute directly to political, social and economic development of the State.

OBJECTIVES The book aims to be a tool of promotion of Hispanic businesses in the Hispanic market, as well as in the U.S. market and cultural minorities. It also aims to stimulate the knowledge on best practices in business in the Hispanic market and encourages the creation of new companies.

CRITERIA All Hispanic businesses in Columbus, regardless of its size, economic volume, type of product or service offering, can be part of this publication. We have not taken into account for inclusion: Owner’s age, legal status in the United States or time the business have been operating on the market; as we have included businesses that may have more than 20 years as a newly created business. It is true that we have not covered all of the Hispanic business in Columbus, but we are confident that we have reached more than 80 percent of its entirety and we have covered almost all areas of business. If any company feels excluded, it have not been our intention and we are in the best will to make its inclusion in the revised edition, to be published next year. No Hispanic business has paid to be included in the book and the information we’ve used have been offered by the owner of the business or obtained through public sources. If in some cases there is an erroneous or inaccurate information, we apologize and we are

in the best will to correct it in the next edition. We have included in this volume the views of specialists which we thank and highly appreciate. Every columnist is responsible for his own opinion, editors respect the criteria of each specialist and they are not jointly responsible of their ideas. In the table of contents, you will see that we have created a chapter entitled “Flea Market”, this refers to the popular market located in the West Broad St., we have created a special chapter for this market because in it operates a considerable amount of Hispanic businesses, even not all Hispanic businesses of the Flea Market were listed in this chapter as this information was collected in the proximity of the winter and for this season only operate the businesses located in the interior of the building; due to the strong winter cold the market from the outside of the building closes, a place where several Hispanic businesses are also located. However, the number of businesses included in this publication represents more than 70% of small businesses from the Flea Market.

MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER WILSON HERNANDEZ For four years I have been in permanent relation with the Hispanic market in Columbus and in particular with Hispanic business and its entrepreneurs. 99% of Hispanic businesses in this city are micro enterprises that in the majority of cases arise as survival responses to the family economic environment.

According to statistics from the census, in 2007 in Columbus about 2,257 Hispanic business were registered, which generated about 433 million dollars a year and some 1,561 jobs. From that date to the present day it is likely that the number of businesses has multiplied considerably, over 3,000 businesses, but as a critical observer that I must be in my status as a newspaper Editor, I must warn that many of those businesses are not business in operation, are businesses registered for other purposes. The amount of actual Hispanic businesses in Columbus should be around 1,500 establishments, with a financial contribution that exceeds $ 500 million a year, figures which are quite significant. The question we must ask ourselves as a community is what we do with this growth? How can we help you continue growing qualitatively? This book aims to be an initiative to respond to those questions, because as we go by

identifying each year business and Hispanic Entrepreneurs of Columbus, with name and surname, with its location and perspectives, to that extent we can design strategies and policies that contribute to its development. This first edition being the first is a modest contribution, but it is also the firm platform for future expanded editions. I must confess that it has not been a simple job, that it has been an arduous effort, and that it had not been possible without the intensive work of my team. To them I want to thank their sacrifice, which repeatedly work on holidays and extended hours, especially to our Art Designer, Vianely Gambin, and my Executive Assistant, Glendy Fuentes. I would also like to reiterate by this way my gratitude to the people and organizations that have believed in this project.

Hispanic Business in Columbus also intends to reach the market and non-Hispanic readers or the city, those with which

The next editions will be showing that trade with other communities, relationship that at the same time represents an intercultural exchange, which is the great wealth of our community and this great nation of immigrants named the United States of America.

- 2014 - HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

For being the first edition it is obvious that there are businesses that have not been included, since we were unaware of its existence or some have escaped us by the

accelerated pace of work, but we are in the best position for inclusion in the next edition. Personally, I’d want to express that this book has for me a very significant value, as it is my first book published in the United States, and is the result of an intense work of 4 years, in diverse and sometimes complex relations with the Hispanic market in this great city of Columbus, which I widely thank and to which I owe so many benefits. Thank you, thank you so much to all!

BEING

A LEADER

Psychological tests have been used to determine what characteristics are most commonly noted among successful leaders. This list of characteristics can be used for developmental purposes to help managers gain insight and develop their leadership skills. The increasing rate of change in the business environment is a major factor in this new emphasis on leadership; whereas in the past, managers were expected to maintain the status quo in order to move ahead, new forces in the marketplace have made it necessary to expand this narrow focus. The new leaders of tomorrow are visionary. They are both learners and teachers. Not only do

they foresee paradigm changes in society, but they also have a strong sense of ethics and work to build integrity in their organizations. Raymond Cattell, a pioneer in the field of personality assessment, developed the Leadership Potential equation in 1954. This equation, which was based on a study of military leaders, is used today to determine the traits which characterize an effective leader. The traits of an effective leader include the following: Emotional stability: Good leaders must be able to tolerate frustration and stress. Overall, they must be well-adjusted and have the

to deal with anything they are required to face. Dominance: Leaders are often competitive, decisive and usually enjoy overcoming obstacles. Overall, they are assertive in their thinking style as well as their attitude in dealing with others.

Enthusiasm: Leaders are usually seen as active, expressive and energetic. They are often very optimistic and open to change. Overall, they are generally quick and alert and tend to be uninhibited. Conscientiousness: Leaders are often dominated by a sense of duty and tend to be very exacting in character. They usually have a very high standard of excellence and an inward desire to do their best. They also have a need for order and tend to be very self-disciplined. Social boldness: Leaders tend to be spontaneous risk-takers. They are usually socially aggressive and generally thick-skinned. Overall, they are responsive to others and tend to be high in emotional stamina. Self-assurance: Self-confidence and resiliency are common traits among leaders. They tend to be free of guilt and have little or no need for approval. They are generally unaffected by prior mistakes or failures. Compulsiveness: Leaders are controlled and very precise in their social interactions. Overall, they are very protective of their integrity and reputation and consequently tended to be socially aware and careful, abundant in foresight, and very careful when making decisions or determining specific actions. Intuitiveness: Rapid changes in the world today, combined with information overload result in an inability to know everything. In other words, reasoning and logic will not get you through all situations. In fact, more and

22 / -2014- HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

more leaders are learning the value of using their intuition and trusting their gut when making decisions. Empathy: Being able to put yourself in the other person’s shoes is a key trait of leaders today. Without empathy, you can’t build trust; without trust, you will never be able to get the best effort from your employees. Charisma: People usually perceive leaders as larger than life. Charisma plays a large part in this perception. Leaders who have charisma are able to arouse strong emotions in their employees by defining a vision which unites and captivates them. Using this vision, leaders motivate employees to reach toward a future goal by tying the goal to substantial personal rewards and values. Leaders are rarely (if ever) born. Circumstances and persistence are major components in the developmental process of any leader, so if your goal is to become a leader, work on developing those areas of your personality that you feel are not up to par. For instance, if you have all of the basic traits but do not consider yourself very much of a people person, try taking classes or reading books on empathy. On the other end, if relating to others has always come naturally to you, but you have trouble making logical decisions, try learning about tough-mindedness and how to develop more psychological resistance. Just remember, anyone can do anything they set their mind to.

IDEAS FOR GROWING

YOUR BUSINESS

Choosing the proper one (or ones) for your business will depend on the type of business you own, your available resources, and how much money, time and resources you’re willing to invest all over again. If you’re ready to grow, take a look at these tips. Open another location. This is often the first way business owners approach growth. If you feel confident that your current business location is under control, consider expanding by opening a new location. Offer your business as a franchise or business opportunity. Franchising your

business will allow for growth without requiring you to manage the new location. This will help to maximize the time you spend improving your business in other ways, too. License your product. This can be an effective, low-cost growth medium, particularly if you have a service product or branded product. Licensing also minimizes your risk and is low cost in comparison to the price of starting your own company to produce and sell your brand or product. To find a licensing partner, start by researching companies that provide products or services similar to yours.

IDEAS FOR GROWING YOUR BUSINESS

For those of you who have already successfully started a business and are ready to take the next step, you may be wondering what you can do to help your business grow. There are many ways to do this, 10 of which are outlined below.

Form an alliance. Aligning yourself with a similar type of business can be a powerful way to expand quickly.

- 2014 - HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

Diversify. Diversifying is an excellent strategy for growth, because it allows you to have multiple streams of income that can often fill seasonal voids and, of course, increase sales and profit margins. Here are a few of the most common ways to diversify: -Sell complementary products or services. -Teach adult education or other types of classes. -Import or export yours or others’ products. Become a paid speaker or columnist. Target other markets. Your current market is serving you well. Are there others? Probably. Use your imagination to determine what other markets could use your product. Win a government contract. One of the best ways to grow your business is to win business from the government. Work with your local SBA and Small Business Development

Center to help you determine the types of contracts available to you. Merge with or acquire another business. Two is always bigger than one. Investigate companies that are similar to yours, or that have offerings that are complementary to yours, and consider the benefits of combining forces or acquiring the company. Expand globally. To do this, you’ll need a foreign distributor who can carry your product and resell it in their domestic markets. You can locate foreign distributors by scouring your city or state for a foreign company with a U.S. representative. Expand to the Internet. Very often, customers discover a business through an online search engine. Be sure that your business has an online presence in order to maximize your exposure.

WHAT DOES “MARKETING” MEAN TO YOU? (Bilingual version)

Research shows that the U.S. Hispanic consumer is ahead of the curve when it comes to digital. Hispanics are leading the way in the adoption of new devices (especially mobile) and they over-index in video consumption. So, it’s no surprise that Universal Pictures has a YouTube channel dedicated to Latinos where it features custom spots, featurettes, clips and content. Some of its trailers have nearly 6 million views. With those kinds of numbers, it’s hard to ignore the facts.

Until they do, they are leaving revenue and market growth opportunities on the table.” It’s crucial for the growth of large companies and small businesses alike to know their market in order to position their business for growth. Consumers don’t want to be told what to buy— they want to be educated and also heard as they weigh their options and connect emotionally with their brands. In the information age we live in, transparency and relevancy will go a long way to increase your bottom line.

If you are the type of person that likes outsidethe-box thinking and if your product/service is conducive to it, then experiential marketing may be the right strategy for you. Experiential marketing is all about using your senses to experience a brand. Instead of hearing a radio spot or watching a T.V. commercial, you make an emotional connection with the brand in order to generate a deeper sense of customer loyalty. You see this tactic quite often at trade shows and events.

2. Hacer conexiones autenticas y no solo hacer contacto casualmente con amigos, seguidores, etc.

- 2014 - HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

LEADERSHIP IN THE 21ST CENTURY (Bilingual version)

Leadership has many different definitions. I believe that leadership is about relationships between leaders and followers. A good definition of leadership comes from Kevin Kruse, author of the book “Employee Engagement for Everyone: 4 Keys to Happiness & Engagement.” Kruse puts leadership in a social context, stating: “Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximises the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal”

By John Ramos Inventory Manager, Instructor & Demand Planner Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC)

Today’s society and business world holds complications beyond any of the leadership philosophies learned and applied in the past 100 years. The heroic figure capable of inspiring and influencing others to solve problems and achieve goals is no longer adequate for dealing with the complex problems inherent in communities and organizations today.

Let’s explore this definition by breaking it down. The first part of the definition indicates “process of social influence” which clashes with assessments of authority and power in viewing a social aspect to leadership. How much influence may a person have to encourage someone to move forward? I would say that first the person being influenced to move forward needs to have the right mind set to be able to accept that there is a level of commitment or personal buy-in involved and it is based on a collective goal that goes beyond the human self-centered nature. With this said, there has to be a common ideology that both individuals will benefit from reaching the goal.

-31-2014- HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS / 31

ANALYSIS ABOUT THE HISPANIC BUSINESSES IN COLUMBUS

So what is leadership? One thing is for sure, it does not have to do with seniority or one’s position in the hierarchy of a company. If you believe that based on your personal characteristics, features and great smile you are a born leader. Leadership has nothing to do with personal attributes. And for those managers and businessman and women out there leadership isn’t management or based on none of its beliefs.

- 2014 - HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

The second portion of the definition, leadership involves others; the implication here is that they don’t need to be “direct reports”. Even though there is a commonality that brings together people, they don’t have to be directly involved in the same area or range but to share the same view points and goals. The importance here is to look outside your immediate situation, comfort zone and surroundings, and to be inclusive of others sharing your same interest and viewpoints. Beyond that it also means that the person demonstrating their leadership skills doesn’t have to be in a management, supervisory or authoritative position. Not because you are an imposing oversized captain in the Armed Services and in charge of a unit means that you are a leader or that the men and women in your unit will follow you. Leadership does not require any personality qualities, features, or even a title; there are many classes, many directions, to effective leadership. While stationed at Camp Johnson, NC as a, sailor, I was in charge of a group of individuals, many of whom had problems with authority and the military, and tasked with building a walkway of about 150 to 200 feet from parking lot to the command office doorway. While there were difficulties and personality conflicts between members, I was able to convey to the members a sense of purpose and meaningfulness to the task; building a team through cooperation and personal buy-in to the job. By changing the group perception of the task from being worthless, to a purposeful and meaningful goal, we were able to work as a team and

32 / -2014- HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

complete the walkway in two days. As I mentioned earlier, leadership is nothing without a shared, common goal. It is not an intended outcome based on influence. A goal can be as simple as climbing to the top of a mountain, running a 5k marathon, fulfilling 80% of a work load with 20% of workers or completing a two day project walkway to prevent a company commander getting mud on his boots. All may be achieved if only there is a common goal that may be shared in a collective and/or team attitude. There is a quote that reads “Communities committed to being leaderful are not leaderless.” Labeled leaders under this formation, nevertheless, are not the common given “heroic” leaders but one that is keen to surround him/ herself with people who are part of a collective effort and strengthen by a strong willed community or team. In conclusion, each person is valuable and has ideas and insights that enrich our community in a social context. Again this is the definition we have embarked in this articles discussion…….”Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.” - Kevin Kruse

LIDERAZGO EN EL SIGLO 21 Por John Ramos Inventory Manager, Instructor & Demand Planner Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC)

BEING A HISPANIC ENTREPRENEUR

Regional Vice President Primerica Financial Services

Calling ourselves Hispanic entrepreneurs in the United States carries a tremendous weight and responsibility with it. Not only do we have the right to fulfill our dreams of improvement and progress in this country, but we also have the duty to do so and set an example for the generations to follow. We must be the beacons of light that guide them, the models to follow through our efforts and results. These are some of my recommendations for those who are “in the fight” and/or want to

join it in order to become successful Hispanic entrepreneurs in the United States: -Have an intense passion for your desire to emerge: this is what will keep you going when the ups and downs, hard times and instabilities of entrepreneurship undoubtedly find their way into your path. Without that fire inside you, that passion, it’s easy to give up when you find the adversities that you will certainly face. This passion allows you to focus on the end result and help you move forward regardless of the bumps on the road. -Laser focus on your business while you build it: temporarily forget about hobbies, entertainment and activities that do not move your business forward. How temporary? That depends on how big your goal is and how hard you’re willing to work for a certain period of time to accomplish it. Know up front that you’re going to miss a couple of your friend’s kid’s birthday parties, family gatherings, etc, in this period. Do keep in mind, however, that your family comes first, and there are things that you must be there for; this is not what I’m referring to here. I’m talking about the events and activities that can (and will) go on without you being physically there. Your focus should be as strong as that of a laser, because although a light bulb illuminates a room, a laser can cut through steel! -Diversification: once you achieve your initial goals, I urge you to diversify; and I don’t mean start all kinds of other random businesses in a hurry, but implement what is known as horizontal diversification. What do I mean by this? Once your business is providing the desired results, I recommend looking for ways to expand your revenue streams

through implementing other ideas that do not directly relate to your current enterprise. This will serve as a bulletproof vest when specific sectors of the economy go through the inevitable cycles and normal fluctuations that could negatively affect your business. -Support other fellow entrepreneurs and do not be afraid to ask for help: we as Hispanics are known for our charisma and warmth. Do not hesitate to ask your loved ones to lend you a hand when starting your path through entrepreneurship; but remember, always keep their best interest in the forefront of everything you do. Similarly, support those who ask of your help, even those that would be considered “competitors”, as long as their philosophies and business practices align with your own. Remember that the pie is big enough to share between all of us... And if we run out, we’ll just make more! - Be willing to adapt and improve: the Japanese have based their manufacturing process in this theory, and it’s no wonder they’re

36 / -2014- HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

world leaders in this field. In fact, they have a word to describe this concept (Kaizen), which closely translates to “Continuous And Never-ending Improvement” (CANI). No matter the size or nature of your enterprise, you have to be willing to make the necessary modifications to, at least, keep up with the day-today changes in your field. I say “at least keep up”, but I would instead recommend being a game changer, a source of innovation, (good) disturbance, a champion in your field! Finally, there is a very important philosophy from Mr. Zig Ziglar that I have personally borrowed, taken to heart and adapted after realizing many benefits it could bring to my life: you can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get It truly is amazing to see the results of this philosophy when implemented daily! I encourage every one of you reading this to consider leading others to move upward, forward and onward as you set your example of being a successful Hispanic entrepreneur in the USA.

It is similar to the Social Security and Medicare taxes withheld from the pay of most wage earners. In general, anytime the wording “self-employment tax” is used, it only refers to Social Security and Medicare

used to figure these taxes. Form 1040-ES contains a worksheet that is similar to Form 1040. You will need your prior year’s annual tax return in order to fill out Form 1040-ES. Use the worksheet found in Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals to find out if you are required to file quarterly estimated tax.

38 / -2014- HISPANIC BUSINESS IN COLUMBUS

“We try to make the customer feel as known, welcome” “Tratamos de hacer sentir al cliente como conocido, bienvenido”

At the reception, the familiar and diligent figure of its owner, to welcome to those arriving, which are received rather than as customers as friends coming to the House. And that experience is its best letter of introduction. The spouses have been 25 years in the United States and 17 years dedicated to the restaurant business. Its speciality is roast, gold fish and seafood. Their food is abundant and affordable for all families. Success smiles them at this prestigious restaurant, but not everything has been easy. They had to work very hard. And with these words, don Victor summed up his experience: “it is difficult, but you have to be enthusiastic. You have to try, with interest, working hard, consistently”.

MARTIN C. SARABIA & SHEYLA S. SARABIA MARTIN INSURANCE AGENCY

“Putting the needs of our customers first, having persistence and honesty and providing excellent service.”

When looking at the style of service of Sarabia spouses you may confirm that helping the customer is the most important thing for them, there is no commitment to economic benefits.

Perhaps unintentionally, the architecture itself of the commercial space builds their philosophy of service. The Agency remains in the small house where it started, which helps to create an environment of family. Modest and friendly. More than one commercial company, Martin Insurance Agency is a family to the service of the community.

“We cook food as if it were for ourselves to eat it, that we are pleased, we don’t cook to market” “Cocinamos una comida como si fuera para nosotros mismos comerla, que nos agrada, no cocinamos para comercializar”

They’ve resided in the United States for 21 years now and in Columbus have been established since year 2000, but it was not until February 2005 when they started business. The spouses serve with courtesy and affable treatment to their customers and make them feel like family. The most requested dish is the “Bandera Paisa”, from Colombia, and the Ecuadorian dish having greater demand is “horneado” or roasted pork and the socalled “Bandera” containing ceviche, guatita and roasted pork. Nearly 70 percent of its customers are Hispanic. In a city where the Mexican cuisine dominates, this one is very attractive, because their menu has dishes of South America and the Caribbean. Fajardo spouses, beyond the restaurant have excelled as promoters of Ecuadorian culture folklore and in Columbus, managing groups of folklore dance and supporting traditional activities of their culture.
