For Starters
The holiday season is upon us. How is that even possible? I’m still emotionally unpacking Pumpkin Spice, and you want me to start decking the halls?
For me, Christmas doesn’t start until December 1st. Not a second before. Here’s the thing, though—I do love the holidays. I just want November to be November, with it’s gratitude, thankfulness, and elastic waistbands, before we turn on the Christmas Cheer.
But for me, that is where the trouble starts—it’s not just the gift-giving. I’m fully here for the lights, the parties, the eggnog, and those fancy Honeybell oranges that only show up once a year. Every year, I make the lists, create a Pinterest board of recipes, shop for a festive dress, and play Tetris with my calendar trying to “be there” and “go here” and “make time.” I love all of it. Except, well... I kind of don’t. I get totally overwhelmed by the endless “must-dos” of the season.
I want Christmas to be this perfect, magical experience, but it’s not. Christmas is messy. Christmas is complicated. And I don’t think it’s just me. We’re fed this idea that it’s supposed to be shiny and bright, but for so many of us, it’s more like a mirage—an illusion of joy that never fully arrives. Behind the pretty lights and sparkly wrapping, there’s a lot of pretending. We pretend we’re happy. We pretend we have it all together. We give more than we have, we stretch ourselves thinner than we should, and we roll into the New Year feeling depleted.
Here’s the truth: No matter how much we want to x everything, we can’t. Christmas is still going to be hard for some of us. We’re still going to feel loss. We’re still going to have wishes that don’t come true. But what if we could lean into that, instead of away from it? What if we could let the imperfection connect us, instead of letting it break us?
So this year, I’ll be here—with my burnt cookies, my scraggly tree, and probably wearing last year’s holiday dress with last year’s holiday stain. And instead of obsessing over the perfect gift, I’ll give what really matters: time and real connection. I’ll ask the hard, important questions: How are you? What do you need? Are you OK? And when I need a dose of cheer, I’ll ip through these pages, nding inspiration in the kaleidoscopic beauty of Michelle Donato’s home or the brilliant smiles of the West Orange High School’s Uni ed Cheer team. And then maybe —just maybe—I’ll let go of trying to make everything perfect and focus on simply showing up, messy aws and all. Because that’s what this season really needs—us, as we are.

Swing into the Season
Plant Street Pops brings worldclass vibes to Winter Garden
In the heart of Winter Garden, something extraordinary is in full swing. Plant Street Pops—the brainchild of Becky Roper, multi-Grammy-nominated percussionist Steve Moretti, and Grammy-winning arranger Matt Catingub—isn’t just a concert series; it’s a vibe.
With its smooth rhythms, spontaneous energy, and laid-back community feel, this live jazz experience is redefining the local music scene.
But to truly appreciate Plant Street Pops, you need to rewind to its roots in Macon, Georgia. Moretti and Catingub assembled an elite group of studio and orchestral musicians from across the U.S. to create a high-energy, genre-defying orchestra in this small Southern town. Renowned for their creative arrangements and unpredictable performances, every Macon Pops show is a one-of-a-kind experience—by design.
So when the Garden Theatre hired Matt and Steve for a show in 2016, Becky Roper was inspired.
“Matt and I sat in Pilar’s Loft for hours after that event, dreaming about bringing something like this to Winter Garden,” she recalls.
Fast forward to last year: that dream became reality when the first Plant Street Pops performance lit up Pilar’s Loft, leaving the crowd buzzing and begging for more. Inspired by that success, this new series is all about making jazz accessible, fun, and undeniably cool. And while Moretti and Catingub remain involved, it’s Becky and musical
director/jazz pianist/composer Per Danielsson who are steering the ship in Winter Garden.
“Jazz has this incredible way of creating a shared experience, where every note feels personal but also connects the entire room. That’s the heart of what we’re doing here,” says Becky. “We’ve had a couple of concerts, and the response has been amazing. The vibe is just right,” Per adds.
More than just a performance, Plant Street Pops is a celebration of music’s power to unite.
The upcoming shows, slated for December 28th and 29th, will feature Per and his wife, Tamara, alongside a dozen or more talented musicians.
The Danielssons’ journey to Plant Street is a story in itself. Their paths first crossed at the prestigious University of North Texas, one of the nation’s premier jazz schools. Tamara, a Seattle-born saxophonist, and Per, a Swedish pianist, were brought together by their shared passion for jazz—and by the mentorship of jazz legend Rich Madison, who would eventually play a role in their marriage.
Over the years, their music has taken them around the world, from South Africa to Sweden,
performing with orchestras, jazz ensembles, and legends like Aretha Franklin. Eventually, they found their way to Central Florida, where they’ve dedicated themselves to performing, teaching, and now, building a deeper connection with the community through their music.
“Jazz is ultimate freedom,” Per explains. “The improvisation, the swing— it just hits different. Every time we play, it’s a new conversation with the band and with the audience.”
Tamara echoes this sentiment. “With jazz, you tell a story without words. You communicate with the band, and you communicate with the audience. Every show is unique, and that’s what makes it so special.”
Thanks to Steve and Matt’s legacy, Becky’s vision, the Danielssons’
artistry, and the uber-talented musicians that will take the stage, Plant Street Pops is THE must-see event in Winter Garden. Whether you’re a jazz head or just someone looking for a good time, these shows are a chance to experience live music that’s as spontaneous as it is soulful. It’s intimate. It’s local. And most importantly, it’s real.

Frankly

Frankie Liz is a powerhouse. From the moment you meet him, it’s clear that his energy, warmth, and passion for community fuel everything he does. It’s not just his booming businesses that catch your attention; it’s Frankie himself—a man whose presence lls a room with warmth and drive. It’s infectious, really. You can’t help but like the guy.
Why? Because it’s not just about his growing list of successful businesses— it’s about the way he builds connections that drive both business and life across county lines.
Frankie’s journey began with family. Raised in a close-knit household, he learned early on that hard work and supporting those around you are the keys to success. His parents’ ded-

ication to their small startup bodega — a sandwich stop/convenience store mashup called Daniel’s Cheesesteaks —laid the groundwork for his values, and Frankie never forgot the importance of community in building something great. What started as helping his parents roll out cheesesteaks evolved into a deeper mission: cultivating relationships that would enrich his hometown.
When social media buzzed with praise for his family’s food, Frankie saw the real value—it wasn’t just about cheesesteaks; it was about trust. He leaned into that trust, inviting local businesses and neighbors to join the journey, designing his menu, his logo, and even his online presence.
“This business is a success because of our
TARIN SCARBROUGH FRED LOPEZ
family and our community,” Frankie says. “Yes, we worked hard, but it’s the people who rallied around us and helped us grow. That’s the di erence. That’s the power of community. I believe that. I believe it truly takes a village.”
Balancing multiple businesses while staying grounded in family life is no small feat, but Frankie makes it look e ortless. He’s a devoted husband and father, and that same love he has for his own family is re ected in his approach to business. His ability to juggle work, family, and community service speaks to his character and the deep-rooted values that keep him moving forward.
Now, with new projects on the horizon, Frankie is ready for the next chapter. His vision for Clermont is
rooted in the same principles that made Winter Garden such a success— family, community, and a commitment to something bigger than himself. He sits on the board of Clermont Main Street, an organization of Downtown Clermont stakeholders passionate about investing in their historic town. This group hosts all the events in downtown Clermont including Harvest Fest, Hometown Holidays, Farmers Markets, and First Friday, an open street food festival that involves all the local businesses on the rst week of every month.
He’s a constant gure at South Lake Chamber events, City Council meetings, and a growing number of networking groups. “Clermont is growing at an exponential rate, faster even than
Scenes of South Lake
Winter Garden in the 90s,” he says. “Within the next 10 years, Clermont will have a new boat dock and amphitheater-like plaza to entice more visitors. It’s incredibly exciting to see the plans come to life, and to actively play a role in the place the next generation, my kids and their kids even, will call home.”
To be part of such an explosive area on top of juggling multiple businesses is tough, but Frankie sees the dream and wants to make it a reality. Frankie states “I want to take everything I learned and loved about Winter Garden and what Winter Garden has done for me and my family and use that as the steppingstone for Lake County right now.”
And that’s all about creating spaces where people feel welcome and connected.
Frankie’s vision has always been bigger than just one restaurant. His move to Lake County was a natural extension of his belief in building communities wherever he goes. And his first entree was launching Daniel’s Cheesesteak Express in Montrose Market. He wanted to appeal to the Lake County patrons who traveled for cheesesteaks (and more) to Winter Gar-
den and provide a more convenient location.
But the vision was always more than just meat and cheese on bread. Noticing a void in the high-end bar scene in South Lake, Frankie and his business partners opened The Roasted Spirit, a craft cocktail bar with high-end spirits and live music. But they weren’t just launching a cocktail bar—they were creating a gathering space. A place for connection, conversation, and collaboration.
cal stakeholders, chamber members, and concerned citizens alike. The door is always open, and so are the ideas. The same principles that helped Daniel’s Cheesesteaks flourish became the foundation for every venture Frankie touched.
Now he and his partners are tackling a new venture—a dual liquor store and sports bar right in downtown Clermont. Rather than competing with local
restaurants, Frankie is collaborating with them, offering food service partnerships that will benefit everyone.
“We’re pouring back into the community,” he says. “Helping other businesses and giving consumers more options at the same time.”
As Frankie bridges the gap between his past successes and future dreams, one thing remains clear: He’s not just building businesses—he’s building com-

The inclusive spirit of West Orange High School’s Unified Cheer Team gives everyone something to cheer about.

Up!eerUp!
Nothing captures the essence of high school quite like the vibrant energy of a cheerleading team. High ponytails swaying in unison, oversized bows gleaming under stadium lights, bright white sneakers dancing across the sidelines, and the radiant smiles of
teens rallying behind their school. This joyful display creates an unforgettable atmosphere that resonates deeply with students and fans alike. For many, these moments de ne high school athletics. But for athletes with special needs, these opportunities were once out of reach.
That all changed when Coach Karen Smith transformed the athletic program at West Orange High School (WOHS) with the introduction of Uni ed Cheer. This groundbreaking program o ers athletes of all abilities the opportunity to shine and proudly represent their school
“I launched the Uni ed Cheer program at West Orange in partnership with the Special Olympics,” says Coach Karen, the dedicated Uni ed Cheer coach and special education teacher recently honored as Teacher of the Year.
“We are now o cially recognized as an FHSAA (Florida High School Athletic Association) sport, allowing our athletes to earn varsity letters at the end of the season.”
This recognition not only instills pride in the athletes but also highlights the increasing signicance of inclusivity in high school sports.
Since launching in January 2023, the excitement surrounding Uni ed Sports at WOHS has been electric. “We began with just a cheer team, but we’ve expanded to include basketball, football, cornhole, and, soon, E-sports,” Coach Karen says. With the unwavering support of her husband and a dedicated team of volunteer coaches, she fosters a community lled with energy and enthusiasm, where every participant can thrive, regardless of their abilities.
Starting a new sports program is no small feat. It requires cutting through red tape, winning over stakeholders, and rallying community support.
But for Coach Karen, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “The most challenging part has been coordinating practice times for everyone. Thankfully, we have an amazing group of parents who help get the athletes to and from practice,” she says, highlighting the community’s dedication to the program’s success.
Todd LaNeave, Athletic Director at West Orange High School, proudly shares, “Uni ed Sports are a fantastic addition to our community and WOHS. As someone who is new to this position, I
was surprised to learn that these programs are quite rare in schools.” In fact, it is one of two high schools in Orange County that o er Uni ed teams, and the other competes solely in bowling. In contrast, West Orange is about to launch its fth di erent Uni ed team.
Cheerleading is all about spirit and camaraderie, and that requires inclusivity. Inclusivity is the key to happiness for everyone
“These teams owe their success to Karen’s hard work and dedication,” Todd emphasizes. “We couldn’t be more proud of what she’s accomplished.”
Field of Dreams
Once a week for two hours, the team transforms classrooms, gyms, and hallways into vibrant hubs of activity. But this is no ordinary practice—it’s a celebration of movement, friendship, and joy. The infectious enthusiasm lls the air as the team gathers, creating a captivating atmosphere brimming with laughter and excitement.
Coach Karen signals the start of practice with a whistle and a clap. The session bursts to life with dynamic drills, energetic cheers, and synchronized movements, lled with the spirited rhythm of bouncing pom-poms and radiant smiles.
Kelsie, a freshman Uni ed Partner, beams as she watches her
teammates practice. “I love being with some of my favorite people,” she says. “These athletes might not have the same opportunities as others, the spirit of leadership and inclusion.
Reese, a senior Uni ed Athlete, echoes this sentiment. “My best friends are on the team, and I love
cheers and ending each with a high kick and a warm hug for Miss Karen.
Danielle, also a senior, has been cheering with Uni ed Sports for three years. “I love going to Panera with the team before games,” she shares, her focus unwavering as
she practices every move. Her bright smile, a radiant re ection of Warrior school spirit.
Unified Cheer Coach and Special Education Teacher Karen Smith was recently honored as 2024 Teacher of the Year. She founded the Unified program at West Orange High School in January 2023.
Jena, a self-proclaimed “super senior,” con dently strides to the front of practice and announces, “I’m in my Cheerleading Era!” As a three-sport Uni ed Athlete, she values inclusion and cherishes the friendships she’s built. And then there’s Blake, a Uni ed Athlete who says, “Athletes with disabilities and regular athletes coming together creates a joyful, wild, and fun atmosphere. We’re all here for one reason: to support West Orange High School.”
Every athlete brings their unique personality to the mix, and that’s all part of Coach Karen’s master plan. “I prioritize building strong relationships in the classroom, fostering trust so they know I understand their needs,” she explains. “My coaching approach is exible and individualized; I pay attention to when a student needs a break or a di erent strategy to succeed.”
What many may not know is that West Orange High School’s Uni ed Cheer Team are the reigning state cheer champions—the only team at the school to hold such a prestigious title. The
squad includes a sideline team with 12 members who perform at all Junior Varsity games and a competition team of 20 athletes who compete four times in the spring. Last year, they proudly showcased their talent at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports, taking rst place in the state competition—a moment they will cherish forever.
The impact of these Uni ed teams extends beyond athletics. They
foster deep friendships, create lasting memories, and pave a path of inclusion for students with special needs. “Gone are the days when these students felt out of place at school; now, they’re some of the most beloved members of our community,” says Assistant Coach Grace Uhle.
Spend just one hour with this team, and the enthusiasm is undeniable. The joy they bring to every practice
Spreading joy is at the heart of what we do. When people see our team, they can’t help but feel uplifted!
and game enriches the entire school. The WOHS Uni ed Cheer Team are more than athletes—they are the embodiment of inclusivity, joy, and community spirit. As Coach Karen says, “Spreading joy is at the heart of what we do. When people see our team, they can’t help but feel uplifted. Cheerleading is all about spirit and camaraderie, and that requires inclusivity. Inclusivity is the key to happiness for everyone.”
The team’s success extends beyond the sidelines. In addition to supporting Junior Varsity games, pep rallies, and homecoming parades, the team performs at events like the Orlando Magic’s Night of Inclusion. “Our kids are deeply connected to the community,” Karen says. “Even though they’re in di erent classrooms, they collaborate seamlessly and feel truly included.”
Coach Karen’s dedication doesn’t stop at cheerleading. Beyond
coaching Uni ed teams, she actively supports Special Olympics and leads a local Best Buddies program. She’s even created a co ee shop in partnership with Axum Co ee at West Orange High School, providing a space for her students to work and interact with their peers. “This initiative encourages them to engage with other students and fosters meaningful relationships.”
In a world often focused on competition, the WOHS Uni ed Cheer
Athletes with disabilities and regular athletes coming together creates a joyful, wild, and fun atmosphere.
Team reminds us that true victory lies in unity, support, and shared joy. These athletes aren’t just cheering for their school; they’re cheering for each other, creating a legacy of inclusion and love that will inspire future generations.
With every chant, every high kick, and every wide grin, we’re reminded that real strength comes from togetherness, and by lifting each other up, we can create a brighter, more inclusive world—one cheer at a time.
We’re so grateful Sydney gets to be part of the WOHS Unified Cheer team as a freshman! It’s an incredible opportunity, letting her have the full high school experience—building the kind of lifelong memories her brothers, also WO Warriors, have. A New Vision of eye care
Nearsightedness is on the rise, but Dr. Ashley Kimble is ready to fight back with innovative treatments and personalized care.
Need glasses? You’re not alone. Nearsightedness, or myopia, a ects nearly 40% of the population today, a significant jump from 25% in 1971. Dr. Ashley Zak Kimble, optometrist and owner of New Vision Care, is determined to tackle the problem head-on.
“Our vision is getting worse, and we need to do something about it,” Dr. Kimble says. “By 2050, it’s estimated that half the world will su er from myopia. This is an epidemic, and I want people to know they don’t have to accept it as inevitable. Myopia management is a huge focus for us.”
So, can New Vision Care cure myopia?
“Unfortunately, no,” she explains. “Myopia isn’t curable, but with the latest developments in optometry, we can slow its progression. For kids, the goal is to keep your child’s prescription from getting too extreme before their eyesight stabilizes. High myopia not only impacts vision but can also lead to serious complications later in life—such as increased risks of glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal tears, and detachments. Plus, it can limit future corrective options like LASIK.”
To manage myopia, Dr. Kimble’s practice uses a variety of innovative techniques. “MiSight is one. It’s a system of contact lenses, worn during the day, proven in clinical trials to slow down myopia in children aged 8 to 12 years old. There are contacts you can wear at night like retainers for your eyes. There are eyedrops. Just spending more time outdoors and decreasing screen times can help.”
Dr. Kimble’s passion for her work shines through in her dedication to patient care. “I got my start working a summer job for a local optometrist in college, and that sparked a lifelong
passion. Now, I get to meet new people every day and help them solve vision problems. It’s incredibly rewarding to see a patient smile when they realize they can see clearly again.”
Beyond improving vision, New Vision Care also focuses on style. “We help

people look great too,” she adds. “My sister runs our eyewear department, which lets me combine healthcare with fashion. It’s amazing to do both!”
For Dr. Kimble, the mission is simple: help people see better today while protecting their vision for tomorrow.

A Very Christmas
Each year, Michelle Donato turns her home into a dazzling winter wonderland, infused with a generous dose of colorful joy courtesy of Lilly Pulitzer.
Technicolor Dreams
Michelle and her husband, Ray, live life in vibrant hues. Their home is a kaleidoscope of color that truly sparkles during the holidays, proving that festive spirit is always in season!
For many, Lilly Pulitzer embodies a vibrant and playful expression of individuality, but for Michelle Donato, it’s a joyful way of life. As Lilly herself famously said, “Anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink.”
With her signature kaleidoscope of bright colors, bold and whimsical patterns, and iconic shift dresses, Lilly Pulitzer has de ned American resort wear for more than 65 years. Michelle fondly recalls the rst time she encountered a Lilly piece: “It was a skort and top set,” she reminisces, her smile lighting up the room. “I had just moved to Florida from Ohio, and I was captivated by its vibrant colors. I wanted it so badly, but I couldn’t a ord it. That moment
became a de ning experience for me—I worked hard to make it mine, and that determination has stuck with me ever since.”
Achieving dreams takes dedication and e ort, and like Lilly, Michelle found the courage to chase her passions and make a statement wherever she goes. As you drive through her charming neighborhood, lined with oak trees and earthy-toned homes, one bright turquoise Key West–style house pops against the horizon. In the driveway sits a stunning Tesla wrapped in a custom Lilly Pulitzer print—a vivid, playful splash of color that perfectly re ects Michelle’s exuberant spirit.
Inside Michelle’s home is an delightful celebration of creativity and passion. Every room brims with
personality, where every detail harmonizes to create an atmosphere that feels uniquely hers.
Her front o ce, a ectionately known as “Michelle’s Closet,” is a true love letter to Lilly Pulitzer. Every square inch of her collection is thoughtfully curated, showcasing Lilly treasures from across the decades. From vintage delights to rare one-of-a-kind pieces, from holiday sparkle to bright activewear, it’s all there, inviting the delightful question: “How would one wear it all?”
“Since high school, I’ve never wanted to wear the same thing twice,” Michelle shares. While we all have our cozy staples—those comforting “emotional support” outts—Lilly gives Michelle the electric colors and
con dence to seize each day with air. “I attend countless Lilly events and always want to stand out. That desire inspired me to start designing my own clothing,” she explains. With a keen eye for creativity, Michelle collaborates with local seamstresses to craft custom Lilly pieces. “I’ll nd a fabric or pattern I love and create a design that feels uniquely me.” Some of her creations have even gone viral! A standout moment was when she and her husband donned matching Lilly out ts for last year’s Kentucky Derby— each piece meticulously designed by Michelle herself, a vivid celebration of her love for whimsy and style.
A collection 20 years in the making has culminated in Michelle’s

ultimate dream come true. “Last year marked Lilly’s 65th anniversary, and we traveled to West Palm Beach for a live auction. I was incredibly lucky to win a one-of-akind gown featured in the March issue of Palm Beach Illustrated,” Michelle says. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Along with this extraordinary gown, Michelle has the unique opportunity to design her own Lilly print and a custom dress with the Lilly team—an unforgettable moment in her fantastical fashion journey.

“Christmas mixed with Lilly brings a whole new level of joy for me,” Michelle beams as she glides through her beautifully adorned home. With more than 40 themed trees, stunning garlands, dazzling displays, and twinkling lights, her decorations rival those of any luxury hotel in Central Florida. “When I have an idea, I have to see
it through,” she adds, her passion for design and creativity truly taking ight. “I wanted to ensure that each tree was unique, telling its own story while capturing the magic of the season.” Each detail re ects her vibrant spirit and love for the holidays, creating an enchanting atmosphere that delights everyone who visits.
With an abundance of imaginative themes, Michelle has truly outdone herself, each one thoughtfully crafted to re ect what holds the most signicance for her family.

With hand-painted Lilly Pulitzer wallpaper and vibrant murals, each corner radiates sunshine and joy. But when October rolls around, Michelle transforms the space into a holiday wonderland, decking every inch with Christmas trees and decor that are nothing short of festive masterpieces!

There’s nothing more beautiful than living authentically and true to yourself. From Grinch Trees to Pulitzer Pink, Michelle’s home is a two-story canvas of authenticity, proving that when you decorate true to yourself, every corner is a celebration of joy and personality.
green ornaments and whimsical touches, captures the mischievous spirit of Dr. Seuss’s classic tale. Bright red accents and twinkling lights evoke the warmth of the holiday season, reminding everyone of the joy of giving and the magic of a heart that grows three sizes.
The Disney Tree is a magical spectacle, featuring beloved characters
from Michelle’s favorite lms. From shimmering Mickey Mouse ornaments to sparkling fairy lights, this tree brings the enchantment of Disney to life, transporting guests to a world of imagination, nostalgia, and childlike wonder.
Next, the French Bulldog Tree is a delightful tribute to her beloved pets. Adorned with charming
canine ornaments, pawprint garlands, and chic Parisian touches, it’s a playful nod to her love for these adorable companions.
The Harry Potter Tree is a charming homage to the wizarding world, lled with enchanting decorations like miniature wands, house colors, and golden snitches.
And, of course, the Lilly Tree is a vibrant explosion of color and pattern, showcasing Michelle’s love for Lilly Pulitzer. Dressed in bright pinks, vivid greens, and electric blues, it features Lilly-themed glass ornaments that shimmer in the lights, re ecting the designer’s signature style. This tree embodies Michelle’s personality, a colorful celebration of her passion for fashion and her boundless spirit.
Together, these themed trees create a delightful tapestry of holiday cheer, inviting friends and family to gather and revel in the season. Each tree is not just a decoration; it’s a cherished piece of Michelle’s life story, lled with memories, laughter, and the warmth of togetherness.
For many, decorating might be a casual Saturday a air or a family weekend project. But for Michelle, it’s an elaborate two-week
extravaganza that calls for an all-hands-on-deck approach. “When I have help, it goes fairly quickly, especially with our roller system for the trees,” she explains. Instead of wrestling with heavy boxes, they simply roll the trees out of above-garage storage and into their festive positions, making the process both e cient and enjoyable.
“I start decorating early enough to truly enjoy the season,” Michelle shares. “There have been years when I got so caught up in perfecting every detail that I felt I missed out on quality time with my family and the festivities. That’s something I never want to experience again.” By giving herself ample time to decorate, she ensures that the joy of the holidays shines through, allowing her to savor each moment with loved ones.
“To me, being cheerful means embracing your authentic self and living in a way that brings you joy,” Michelle says. While Lilly may not be in everyone’s closet, we all have a passion that speaks to our hearts. Take a page from Michelle’s book: Live fully in the moment and surround yourself with the things that ignite your happiness.

Leiva was watching. And just like Double Dare’s host Marc Summers, Matt was the kind of kid who loved seeing people have a good time—even if it meant a little chaos along the way. But life isn’t always a straight shot to your dream job—sometimes you’ve got to climb over a giant obstacle or dive into a pool of whipped cream to nd your way. In Matt’s case, that rst obstacle was law school.
A pre-law student and debate team member in high school, Matt was drawn to the intricacies of the law. But something didn’t sit right—he couldn’t see himself in a courtroom. When he got
to college, things took a di erent turn. He started working at Universal Studios, rst at the Men in Black ride, then testing his performance skills at Halloween Horror Nights. Soon, he was diving into improv at the SAK Comedy Lab and even earned a spot on their cast. Instead of arguing cases, Matt was now making people laugh, and it felt like he’d nally found his calling—lifting his spirits and those of everyone around him.”But how do you make money doing that?” Matt recalls asking himself. “I honestly had no idea.”
Like any great episode of Double Dare itself—Matt’s big break
We were doing some sort of hairthemed category for ‘Movember’... I bet the crowd that if they bought
job o er, I jumped at the opportunity!”
For the next two years, Matt honed his hosting skills in every genre possible: trivia nights, game shows, karaoke, and even a little DJing. “Every night was di erent, every crowd was di erent. I got to host game shows and trivia, just like the ones I grew up
watching,” he says with a laugh.”It was de nitely a full-circle moment. And the most fun I had ever had, up to that point.”
That said, much like the shows he adored, life threw Matt another curveball—fatherhood. As much as he enjoyed his career, he missed his daughter, and he realized he was missing out on her growing up. When his contract was up, he faced a di cult decision: choosing another year at sea or being more present for his daughter. Matt hung up his microphone.
But that pivot didn’t stop him from pursuing his dreams. “I decided to take my love for game shows and trivia out into the community,” he says. “From the very beginning, I wanted to make hosting events more fun, like a game show mixed with a party. Music, jokes, real moments that go beyond just reading questions o a cue card. It’s all about creating an experience where everyone leaves feeling like they had the time of their life.”
His business became the “missing link” of local entertainment, which inspired his business name—hosting events, private parties, fundraisers, weddings and more.
A Balanced
At Foundation Academy, champion athletes are shaped into tomorrow’s role models.
In today’s fast-changing landscape of high school and college athletics, developing the whole student is more important than ever. While it may be tempting to focus solely on nurturing athletic talents, Foundation Academy (FA) understands that true
success stems from a wellrounded approach to education and personal growth. Through the academy’s guidance and care, students not only excel athletically but also build a strong foundation for their overall potential—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Balanced Athlete
FA’s Athletic Director Robert East and Assistant Athletic Director Krystal ThomasSmith emphasize the school’s deep commitment to holistic student development. “We cultivate every skill through a biblical lens,” Robert explains. “Our mission is to guide students toward a Christ-centered life, fostering growth in every aspect of their lives.” This approach is crucial as 70% of FA’s student body participates in athletics, spanning more than 20 sports and 40 teams. FA’s focus on promoting balance ensures that students develop their full potential without neglecting any area of growth.
“We think of it like a fourlegged stool,” Robert continues. “If one leg is shorter, the stool becomes unsteady. It’s the same with education. If we focus solely on athletic ability and neglect a student’s emotional and spiritual growth, they become unbalanced in their development.”
The aim: To create wellrounded individuals, not just talented athletes.
Krystal expands on this, particularly in light of the increasing opportunities for student-athletes with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals. “With the rise of NIL opportunities, we’ve seen a clear shift in the mindset
of high school athletes,” she notes. “It’s crucial for young athletes to be prepared not only for the game but for life’s bigger picture. The decisions they make now will impact their future, and we want them to be ready for the challenges that come with success.”
One shining example of FA’s impact is alumnus Danny Stutsman, now a starting linebacker at the University of Oklahoma. Recently awarded NIL funds, Danny chose to donate $50,000 to support the 18 walk-ons on his team. “Danny’s generosity and leadership are a testament to the values we instill
By focusing on a Christcentered approach to holistic development, Foundation Academy is ensuring that its students leave not just as athletes, but as individuals grounded in their faith, equipped for life, and prepared to make a di erence both on and o the field.

Sitters for All Your Critters!
Yes, you can buy love—at least for your pet! Savanna Westwood, owner and pet whisperer behind Savvy Sitter, has spent a decade proving it. Whether your pet has fur, feathers, or scales, she welcomes them all. Well… everything except snakes. Sorry, Slinky!
Celebrating 10 years in business, Savvy Sitter is the
best, most trusted pet sitting service in Winter Garden, Windermere, and Horizon West. “We care for all kinds of pets—dogs and cats, of course, but also bunnies, bearded dragons, saltwater fish, poison dart frogs, parrots, even an axolotl,” Savanna says.
Even if you don’t choose the Savvy Sitter team, Savanna encourages every-
one to use a licensed professional, especially for weekends or longer. “Things happen that you don’t plan for,” she says. “We’ve dealt with emergency medical issues, hurricanes, broken A/C units, and burst pipes.
“You want your pet to be safe, comfortable, and cared for by someone who will love them as you do. That kind of peace of mind is priceless!”
No More Ruffing It
Physical rehabilitation isn’t just for humans
Rehab for dogs and cats is a real thing—and there is a real need for it. Something Edriana Fermin, who holds a Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy for humans, discovered six years ago.
“My longhaired dachshund Gerard started getting older and needed rehabilitation. When I couldn’t find what he needed, I enrolled
in the Canine Rehabilitation Institute to become certified. I adapted my training from humans to animals. And Unleashed Rehab was born.
“Our sole focus is improving a pet’s quality of life through rehabilitation. We’re also mobile, meaning we come to you. We treat dogs, cats, rabbits, hawks, and more. We helped extend the lives of two Florida Panthers
at Gatorland by two years through our work!
“I want people to know rehabilitation is another option besides cage rest and meds—for older animals and younger ones, too. Surgical intervention can get expensive. Sometimes rehabilitation can eliminate that need. Or, at least improve the odds for better outcomes.”
Savor the Season
The festive foods you can’t celebrate without.

We asked people to dish on the foods they can’t live without during the season, and the responses are as diverse as they are mouthwatering. From secret family recipes to bold twists on classics, these festive favorites prove that everyone’s got a story to tell—one bite at a time.
Sweet Potato Casserole aka Nutty Butty Yam Bake
My sweet sister-in-law introduced us to a sweet potato casserole that is an annual favorite for the whole family. It bursts with avors from all the spices! But what I really love is that the recipe card collects a little bit of sweet remnants of the delicious ingredients over the past 35 years.

Baked Turkey and Dressing
Mom’s Christmas Cookies
Apple Pie
My birthday is right around Thanksgiving. It’s no wonder, then, that I love baked turkey and dressing (not to be confused with stuing)! My mom’s cornbread dressing, complete with butter, the juice from the turkey and all her TLC is simply the best!
—Tremene Triplett
I’m always looking forward to Christmas time the most, for my mom’s extra-thin, perfectly crunchy Christmas cookies. They’ve been a family tradition for as long as I can remember, and every year we all ght over the last few. The nostalgia of eating them as kids is something I cherish, and I know it’s a tradition we’ll continue with our own kids, year after year.
— Promise Hope
My husband, John, makes a delicious homemade apple pie! He’s been making it for probably six years now. He even makes a lattice crust, so it looks pretty in addition to being delicious. His secret is adding spices to the melted butter before pouring the sauce over the sliced apples. Seriously the best apple pie! We make it during the holidays and also for my brother’s birthday. He wanted apple pie for his 20th birthday, which turned out to be the last birthday he celebrated on Earth, so now we make it every year to remember him, too.

Prime Rib
Last Christmas Eve, my wife and I spent hours cruising around Winter Garden and Oakland Park on our golf cart with our Husky, Ellie, admiring the Christmas lights. When we nally made it home around 10:00 p.m., we cooked prime rib and all the sides together. Even though it turned into a late night, we had an incredible time. And we plan on doing it again this year.
— Matt Kester
Standing Rib Roast
I love the time it takes to make it, the thrill of if it’s cooked properly, the anticipation- and the beauty of the presentation when it’s done. I grew up eating it but I love cooking it more. I mostly love hosting and cooking for my family and it is the centerpiece of a great holiday meal.
—Tracey Wiu
Sweet Potato Pie
I started baking sweet potato pie for my grandpa as a kid and have been making it ever since. Back then, it was close to inedible, yet he ate it with a smile on his face. Over time, I’ve perfected the recipe and nothing feels better than that sly grin when I bring him a slice.

Casserole
I had friends in Germany who would send me Weihnachtsstollen. It’s a pastry made out of marzipan and raisins, sprinkled with powdered sugar. Throughout the years, I’ve learned to toast it and put butter on it, and it is absolutely delicious. You only see it at Christmas time
—Steve Brown
My grandma’s sweet potato casserole. For me, it’s the only side that really matters and has always been my favorite.
My sister and I decided to take over serving Thanksgiving dinner (our grandma deserved a break) and that was the one dish I took over.
—Jennifer Ballard
Homemade Tamales
Being from Texas, my traditional holiday food choices are a little di erent than most. While people have memories of gathering around the table to eat a roasted turkey or baked ham, my fondest holiday food tradition always falls to homemade tamales. My go to tamale is pork and hatch chili washed down with an ice cold Shiner!
—Todd Waldrum
Pizza
My work really stays busy in the holiday season, and I don’t always have time fora huge meal. Years ago, I ordered a pizza instead of cooking and it has now become a holiday staple. Christmas isn’t Christmas for me without a pizza pie.
— Paul Collins
Chicken Tortilla Soup
I love making this chicken tortilla soup for holiday pot lucks. It’s super easy in the slow cooker and the fresh lime and cilantro paired with tortilla strips and your fave hot sauce kicks it up a notch.

Key Lime Cheesecake
Key lime cheesecake with a wild berry topping and graham cracker crust is a family favorite. Hey! We’re in Florida- that’s how we roll. Been making it for years and it’s such a holiday treat.

Lake Nona Wave Hotel transforms weddings into unforgettable experiences as unique as your love story.
If you don’t have a venue—you don’t have a wedding date.”
That’s one of the key insights from Shannon McLaughlin, Wedding Specialist at Lake Nona Wave Hotel. Once you answer the “where,” the rest of the details will fall into place
And when that “where” is the extraordinary Lake Nona Wave Hotel, the choice feels e ortless.
“We’ve had couples come all the way from California to plan their special day with us,” says Shannon. One reason could be that Lake Nona Wave Hotel is among the very first hotels in the nation to be designated a Michelin Key Hotel. Michelin is world-renowned for quality and luxury and comes shining through in every product and every service Lake Nona Wave Hotel o ers.
The experience starts as soon as a couple steps through the front doors and into the hotel’s lobby, a ectionately called the Living Room. True to its name, the space exudes warmth and intimacy, with over 300 curated pieces of art on display.
Behind the hotel lies a Sculpture Garden, a testament to its Michelin distinction. This is where most wedding ceremonies take place. Surrounded by a lush, tropical landscape featuring over 300 varieties of palms, the garden is home to hundreds of sculptures—some towering 15 to 20 feet high—creating a breathtaking oasis that feels like a tropical escape, right in Central Florida.
Weddings, of course, are complex a airs, full of moving parts. To ensure the highest standards and a truly personalized experience, Wave Hotel has collaborated with many of the best wedding vendors in the area.
“Orlando has a comparatively small wedding industry,” says Event Team Leader Angela Palacio. “We’ve built
close relationships with the top vendors and work hand-in-hand with wedding planners to create unique weddings of all sizes. We’ve hosted everything from intimate gatherings of close friends and family to grand celebrations of up to 170 guests.”
“Our goal is to create a special experience for every guest,” Shannon adds. “We want people leaving saying, ‘Wow, I couldn’t have experienced this anywhere else!’”
Wave Hotel’s attention to detail has led to some truly memorable events. One wedding, for example, was a tribute to Comic-Con, with the bride and
groom dressed as their favorite characters and a color palette of royal blue, neon yellow, and bright red. Videos of their favorite comics played throughout the event, making for a truly unique celebration.
Wedding cakes are more than just a sweet treat—they’re often a centerpiece of the day’s celebration, and at Lake Nona Wave Hotel, they take on a whole new level of artistry. The Comic-Con couple had their cake intricately designed to reflect their favorite comics. Another bride, known for her love of fashion, opted for a towering confection inspired by her elegantly ribboned shoes.
The creative genius behind these unforgettable cakes is master cake designer Lizandra Reilova, owner of Blush Sucré. Known for her ability to craft both visually stunning and delectably flavorful cakes, Lizandra’s creations are truly bespoke. Her signature flavors—like Bananas Foster, Peach Bellini, and Pistachio Raspberry—are as unforgettable as her custom designs.
Is there a wedding in your future? If so, let Lake Nona Wave Hotel be your where, and watch your dreams come to life.

Pucker Up
A Florida native’s first encounter with professional hockey
This question goes out to all you Florida hockey fans out there: What the hell is your problem? Look around you. Look at that palm tree. You’re living in the literal Sunshine state. It has no winter because that is the will of the Lord. We have no business playing hockey, and we sure as hell don’t have any business being good at it.
And yet, there I stood in front of the Kia Stadium, shoulder to shoulderpad with a few thousand other Floridians who were there to watch Florida take on also-Florida to defend or honor or perhaps avenge a signi cant NHL title, if I remember correctly. There I sat in a packed arena, watching everyone twirl their standard-issue Tampa Bay
Lightning cheer towels while all the dudes down there clacked their sticks around and stu .
As you can probably guess, going to a big, loud stadium to watch the sport men do the sport isn’t my jam to begin with. For one, I’m jumpy around loud noises because I am secretly a small prey mammal. Two, I never have any idea what’s going on, despite my partner’s best attempts to explain, and it’s only a matter of time before my mind starts to wander. How long does it take to freeze the basketball court? Do you need a license to operate a zamboni? Are these players locally sourced or do we import them from the north? Do the guys on opposite teams get along outside of work? How do they decide what number
to put on their shirts? Wait, why is everyone cheering?
But I was no less entertained, I think, than the avid fans all around us— my attention was just directed to everything that wasn’t the game. I wasn’t expecting there to be such a strong community focus, but nearly every pause in gameplay was used to highlight a student athlete, or a veteran, or a dog.
Easily my favorite thing was watching people lose their minds when they saw themselves on the JumboTron. There’s a rhythm to it;the initial candid cheering, the moment of recognition, and then a huge frenzy of pointing and waving wildly. To whom? Themselves? Us? Who cares? Nothing means anything when Florida is good at hockey.
We decided to duck out at the end of the second period because it was a “boring game,” which I think means there wasn’t enough ghting. Still, it was an educational experience for me. I learned that white is a really hard uniform color to follow on an ice rink. I learned how to spin the towel without getting it wrapped around my hand. I learned that there’s a hockey version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” that’s sung by Canadian John Denver and could stand to be about 30 seconds shorter. I learned that someone, somewhere, gets paid to play the organ during hockey games, and I hope that guy’s having a good day. Most importantly, I learned not to judge a puck by its pucker.
