We don’t just want to do your taxes, we want to change your life.
These students on stage are some of the hardest working students on campus. Their dedication and commitment of excellence is seen through all of their performances.
We don’t just want to do your taxes, we want to change your life.
These students on stage are some of the hardest working students on campus. Their dedication and commitment of excellence is seen through all of their performances.
I would like to welcome you all to this performance presented by the Lake Howell Silver Regiment Band and Guard program. These students on stage are some of the hardest working students on campus. Their dedication and commitment of excellence is seen through all of their performances, whether it is on the field at a Lake Howell football game or competition, on a gym floor, local city performances or on a concert stage.
Our band students are some of the strongest students at Lake Howell, academically and athletically. They balance their time management between rehearsals, performances and their academics. Our Band and Guard programs are truly an elite representation of this school and one that holds lots of pride. I would like to thank all of my administration, especially Mr. Howard and Mrs. Pearson-Welch for their continued support of the band program and me. I would also like to thank the rest of the Lake Howell faculty and staff for their support. I am very fortunate to be working with such amazing people every day.
I would also like to thank the staff of the Silver Regiment. Our marching band has upheld the traditions and pride that have been instilled since the opening of our school. Our amazing staff really assisted in pushing our program in being successful. Also, thank you to the parents and volunteers of our program. The Lake Howell Silver Regiment has some of the most dedicated parents and guardians I have ever seen. Without you, the Lake Howell Band and Guard program would not be possible.
It is with great pride that I present these students to you. They have worked at an extremely high level of excellence, which you are about to witness. The kind of attitude and devotion will truly mold these students to become successful members of society once they graduate from Lake Howell High School.
Thank you for all of your support. Please enjoy the performance.

The story of Prometheus is about how he obtained fire to give to humankind in order for them to create technology and become successful. The opener, based on David Chappell’s “Awaken,” shows the musicians as the humans rising from dirt and mud, the color guard as the flames coming down from Mount Olympus (by the use of our mountain prop), and the chaos that happened afterward. The second movement, a ballad created from Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” demonstrates the humans gaining control of the flame. Then the closer, “Prometheus” by David Chappell, demonstrates the success of humans conquering the fire. This was an extremely fun show to put together and having the Silver Regiment marching band program tell this story through their music and choreography! We are very proud of the band and their success with this show!

The Silver Regiment Marching Band is made up of the combined membership of all Lake Howell High School Band performing ensembles. This is a competitive musical marching unit organized to provide artistic and entertaining performance for football games, parades, pep rallies, and competitions.
The Silver Regiment Color Guard is a non-musical section that provides the strongest visual support to the marching band’s performance. The color guard interprets the music that the marching band is playing via the synchronized spinning of flags, sabres, riles, and other equipment, as well as through dance.
The Silver Regiment Marching Band competes in the Florida Marching Band Championships (FMBC) circuit and has been a state finalist for many years.

The Lake Howell Band Program supports two concert bands: the Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band. Both bands perform at local, district, and/or state level Concert Band Festivals several times per year, and their members are encouraged to pursue private lessons and participate in solo and chamber performance festivals. These performances culminate in an annual Music Performance Assessment (MPA), in which our concert bands proudly earn consistent Superior ratings — the highest rating granted by the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA).
With limited seats available by audition only, the Wind Ensemble is comprised of the Lake Howell Band Program’s most advanced and high-achieving musicians. Students are primarily upperclassmen, many of whom receive private lessons and are capable of performing complex and sophisticated band literature. Each member of the Wind Ensemble is expected to participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival, and is encouraged to audition for district, state, and national honors bands.

The Symphonic Band is the Lake Howell Band Program’s open-admission concert band. Comprised of mostly underclassmen with varying skill levels, the complexity of the band literature is dependent on the makeup and experience of the group. Symphonic Band members are encouraged to participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival and audition for county and state honors bands. Many go on to audition for a seat in next year’s Wind Ensemble.

The Lake Howell Jazz Band is an audition-only ensemble for students of all grades who are interested in the jazz idiom. With just five types of wind instruments and a four-member rhythm section, this specialized ensemble explores theory and improvisation in a variety of jazz genres including Bebop, Latin, Swing, and JazzRock Fusion. The Jazz Band puts on additional concerts outside of Concert Band performances, and receives its own evaluations in a separate Jazz Band MPA.

When George Benson first penned “The Greatest Love of All,” the Silver Regiment was only a few years old. By the time Whitney Houston first sang it a decade later, we had become a nationally renowned band program. In the decades since, we have adopted this classic hit and made it our own. And to this day, there’s nothing quite like the moment when a hundred young musicians gather in a massive circle to and begin to sing: “I believe the children are our future….”
The Silver Regiment has a deep history, cultivated from older generations passing their ways down to younger ones, teaching them how to lead the way. All those memories and traditions remind us that we’re a part of something bigger than ourselves.
That’s why the Silver Regiment has such a powerful connection to this song. Forget about our successes and failures; they’re just a small part of our story. And there’s no telling what the Silver Regiments of the future will accomplish.
With apologies to Whitney Houston, “The Greatest Love of All” is our song. It has lived with us through years’ past and will continue to dwell in our hearts for years to come.
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody’s searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me
I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone’s shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I’ll live as I believe
No matter what they take from us
They can’t take away our dignity
Because the greatest love of all Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all Inside of me
And if, by chance, that special place
That you’ve been dreaming of Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love
You may look at the five-foot-tall wooden cutout in the corner of the band room and see the once-famous comic strip “Ziggy.” But to all of us who have donned the blue and silver of the Lake Howell Silver Regiment, that cutout is our beloved mascot, TUG.
Early band directors of the Silver Regiment used to use the phrase “thumbs up, guys” to show approval of what the band was doing on the field or in concert. Back in the day, before cell phones kept us glued to every reaction to our performances, we used to have to wait painstaking minutes, if not hours, to be adjudicated. During one such marching band competition, our band parents were keeping track of the scores from the stands and, in unison, about 50 of them stood up and shouted across the field “THUMBS UP, GUYS!”
The Silver Regiment went on to be named grand champions that day, and the name TUG stuck with our mascot ever since.
TUG has gone on to become more than just our mascot. TUG is a way of life in the Silver Regiment. Having a bad rehearsal? Thumbs up, guys. Best performance of your life? Thumbs up, guys. Coming back into the band room as an alumnus for the first time in two decades? Yep. Thumbs up, guys. Nothing embodies the culture of the Silver Regiment quite like our TUG.
As our uniform has changed throughout the
years, TUG has undergone a makeover as well to keep up with the times. But regardless of whether TUG is portrayed in his old Blue Devils’-esque, threepiece marching band uniform or the sleek, new look the Silver Regiment dons today, he remains the centerpiece of all that we do as a band program. Throughout the years, generations of Silver Regiment members have been photographed with our mascot, often sticking their arms out, thumbs in the air in the “thumbs up, guys”
gesture. Even when alumni come back into the band room, some who hadn’t stepped foot in the band room in years or decades, a picture with TUG is still a treasured keepsake.
Though you won’t see TUG at tonight’s performance, you’ll still see all of what he embodies on full display on our stage. And if you watch close enough, you may catch a glimpse of a performer or two flashing the wide two thumbs up. Thumbs up, guys.
