Charlie Awards

This is your moment! Congratulations, FMA Olympians. I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the triumphs of the past year instead of the challenges. The glory of those triumphs cemented themselves in my mind as I watched the U.S. Olympic trials. Between competitions, the broadcast aired “human interest” stories of athletes and the challenges they had overcome. Invariably, as the athletes were shown winning their places on the team, each expressed profuse gratitude for the moment and an understanding that what they had overcome was difficult, but forged in them the strength to achieve their goals. What do our award winners and the Olympians have in common? Both have a standard that must be met in order to be selected. The Olympic standard is only achieved by the best and the best have sacrificed to achieve their goal and claim glory. I am in awe of the resilience shown by the Florida publishing industry. This year we received the most entries to the Charlie Awards since 2017! This industry is one of the best in the nation. The standards established and held by the publishers, printers, designers, writers, photographers and editors are a testament to the immense talent, dedication, and love for the craft. In a way, the Charlie Awards are our Olympic team. I am grateful and honored to be part of an industry that takes immense pride in its work, that is resilient, innovative, creative, diverse and inspirational. The depth and variety of award winners showcase these attributes. On behalf of the FMA board of directors, I want to express our gratitude to the distinguished panel of judges who took time from their busy schedules to select this year’s winners. We also want to recognize the incredible support of our sponsors. Above all, we want to applaud our members—their continued hard work and determination are the reasons why the FMA is successful. Congratulations and three big cheers to all the winners! May we continue to strive for excellence in our fields and add to the great legacy we have all created.

The Charlie Awards are named in honor of the late Charles G. Wellborn Jr., a longtime professor of journalism and communications at the University of Florida whose numerous contributions to FMA and the publishing industry have been instrumental in furthering the growth of magazines in our state.

Sabrina Salovitz: 2021 Winner of The Doug Damerst Scholarship

Charlie Awards Winners

Sabrina Salovitz is a junior at Florida Gulf Coast University pursuing a major in journalism with minors in interdisciplinary studies and political science. She is the Editor-in-Chief of her university paper, Eagle News, and has been published in her hometown paper, The Port Charlotte Sun. “Journalism is changing, and it will be up to us and the generations that come afterward to create a new path,” says Sabrina. “When people care about something enough to raise their voices and call out for change…well that’s a story just begging to be written.” ___________________________________

FMA honors the life and career of Doug Damerst by awarding an annual $1,000 cash prize in his name. The award goes to a student majoring in journalism or communications at a fouryear, Florida-based college who demonstrates exemplary dedication, drive, and potential.

This is a very exciting new entrant in Florida’s magazine community. I’m voting for it because it breaks the norms enough to excite and engage, yet it maintains a high bar of quality in terms of content and design. Please, newcomer, do not take your foot off the gas pedal. I love your cover designs, story ideas, page design/ book layout, and most of your featured photography, but I would urge you to keep your photography quality control

high throughout the magazine, give the sponsored content pieces to someone other than your main staff writer, and push your advertisers to provide camera-ready artwork that matches your standard of editorial quality. Great work, Embrace. Keep going. All three of these magazines feature strong writing and art. All of the cover stories were well written and paired with creative art and layouts. In particular, the

cover story for ANNUAL 2020 No.1 Vol.1 about the rock band was absorbing. In that same issue, “Soul Mates,” captured me and I liked the use of the two perspectives from each of the couple. The department articles were also of high quality. In particular, the pieces in the October issue. “Vision 2020” was excellent. All of the photos in each of the issues were excellent and many of the photo series were powerful.

All in all, each magazine was well written with excellent design and layouts. From front to back this is a brilliantly conceived and executed magazine, with edit, art, and design seamlessly combining to create a look that is exciting and modern without being edgy or trendy. The magazine’s mission of blending gay, straight, male, female and other perspectives is a challenging one, but the overall design and content succeeds in creating a presentation that is inclusive in all ways. The design sparkles, with crisp typography, smart

visuals, and an attention to detail on every page. Features are treated as moments of visual storytelling, with multiple entry points and graphics throughout, with diverse and energetic variations in style that still maintain a cohesive overall look. There’s a great awareness of when good images should run big, and when less-good images (which comes with the lowbudgets of all small publications) should run in more restrained situations. The feature designs are strong and stylish, and while there’s a great variety of type and graphic presentations they

all feel part of the holistic visual voice of the magazine. This is great stuff, and obviously a magazine team that is working tightly together in all aspects (as it should be). If there’s a fault to my eye, it’s that the purely visual features tend to sprawl a bit, usually a spread too much. But I imagine that’s due in large part to limited resources and the need to fill space cheaply. Overall this is so well done, and for a new publication, the edit and content has substance and solidity well beyond its years. Great work, and easily my choice for Magazine of the Year in this group.
