Charlie Awards
The sky’s the limit for our FMA members! On behalf of the FMA Board of Directors, congratulations to this year’s Charlie Award winners! Just as the relaunching of the space program here in Florida reminds us what mankind is capable of, this year’s winners show us there are no limits to their creativity and resiliency, even in the face of unbelievable odds. 2020 has been a year for the history books. When we look back on it, I hope we remember the resiliency of the Florida publishers who quickly rose to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope we remember FMA’s “How Florida Magazines Are Dealing With the Coronavirus Pandemic” webinar, where nearly 100 publishing pros joined to learn how their peers are keeping their magazines going. I hope we remember how an entire industry joined forces, how even competitors put aside their differences and shared their experiences, their resources, in the hopes of helping everyone get to the other side together. This year has tested our limits, but that only makes it all the more important to celebrate our accomplishments. This year’s awards demonstrate the highest quality of work across a variety of media — with more than 560 entries from wonderfully talented companies. On the following pages, we recognize the innovative excellence that Florida has become known for. I want to thank you for joining us for our digital awards presentation on July 24. I also extend a big thank-you to our judges for their thoughtful feedback and discerning eye. These 15 publishing professionals from across the country brought a wealth of talent and experience to the awards process and selflessly volunteered their time to evaluate this year’s entries. We’ll be back and better than ever next year at the Florida Media Conference in Sarasota! I can’t tell you how much I look forward to greeting all of you in person again. One thing I’ve learned through my nearly 20 years with the association is that our community is strong, and our members’ passion for the profession never wavers. Today, our members continue to transform magazine publishing and launch it to new heights. Tomorrow, who knows? If this year’s SpaceX launch is any indication, I’d say Florida’s best and brightest are just getting started. See you next year!

April Rubin: The 2020 Doug Damerst Scholarship Winner April is a junior at the University of Florida. She is pursuing a major in journalism and minors in anthropology and Latin American studies. She currently is interning at her hometown newspaper, The Miami Herald, as a general assignment reporter. She also plans to participate in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists student project. In Gainesville, she has reported and edited for UF’s student newspaper the Independent Florida Alligator, NPR/PBS affiliate WUFT News, and the Gainesville Sun. She shares that she is grateful for the support from the Florida Magazine Association.
