This small single storey contemporary residence is nestled in the slopes of Beverly Hills, close to the well-known Mulholland Drive. It was originally constructed 50 years ago for a young actress who was a mistress of the famous Howard Hughes. Its current resident purchased the home 40 years ago and proceeded to commission the design of one of the most well-reputed landscape architects of the time. However, over the years the design had become dated and the materials began to badly decay. It was our charge to evolve the landscape to be simple, contemporary and better functioning while complimenting the home’s wonderful interior. We opened hillside views, reconstructed the pool and surrounding hardscape, lengthened wall, and incorporated highly graphic plants in long swaths to accent the long lines of the property. A new outdoor kitchen boasts modern conveniences and is frequently used by the client who hosts frequent gatherings.

EMBARK WITH US New Mood Design transformed a tiny, 1970’s era space of 300 square feet that included a children’s bedroom, bathroom and hallway into a connected master bedroom with en suite bathroom and a separate powder room. The client specifically requested that the master suite be fully enclosed for maximum privacy and to promote a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere. The client entertains often, so a guest powder room off the kitchen was also a top priority. New Mood Design achieved their client’s vision by fully gutting the space and redesigning a new floor plan. The result is an elegant master bathroom with a two-person soaker tub, frameless glass shower enclosure and a walkin wardrobe tucked behind the vanity wall. It is completely private and connected to the master bedroom through a set of downward steps. The accessible guest powder room is directly off the kitchen. The client’s modern, open-plan home feels very spacious due to high ceilings and tall windows that open onto forest, so New Mood Design’s remodel reflects the client’s desire to continue this open and minimal design while also fashioning a warm and relaxing space. To make the master bathroom appear larger, the firm created a tone-on-tone, light-colored palette with reflective tile surfaces to lend an overall brightness, day and night! The white, glossy, floor-to-ceiling tiles wrap the bathroom walls to create expanse. Silvery-grey and taupe-brown stripes run through the white porcelain, adding subtle softness. Wall-mounted toilets are space-saving features and highlight the minimal look desired by the client. Also adding to this minimal look is the white, high-gloss lacquer finish chosen for the wardrobe, which helps expand the small space. Spa-like warmth and contrast are achieved by using earthy grey floor tiles, a richly textured and dramatic floating vanity in a walnut finish, and African mahogany millwork. All of these elements complement the striking Thai Buddha culled from the client’s Asian art collection.

Accessories with Personality A room can really come together when it is accessorized.

It is the elements that surround the large pieces of furniture in a room which create the impact. As an analogy, a suit with a t-shirt can have a very different feel than a suit with a wing collared shirt and bow tie. Once you have decided on a sofa and chair, then you are going to create the real personality with the surrounding elements. If you have a small collection of similar elements, like works of art, then creating a collage on a wall can have great visual impact. The images should relate in some way; black and white, the same theme, same size, or have the same finish, etc., and they will work together as a group. This collection of architectural drawings with coloured treatment is fantastic on the wall over the neutral coloured sofa and creates a very masculine feel.
GLEN PELOSO

EMBARK WITH US The set up in a retail store like Designer Inspired Interiors on King Street East in Toronto, is a great example of what you can do at home. Throw cushions can create a big impact. The typographic cushions used here, create a great visual. We have used cushions with letters and numbers, florals, and geographic patterns. Consider what statement a cushion makes on its own, to be sure it works with the collection of accessories you have selected. Selecting a single pop of colour is also a great way to create visual interest. While we have selected red as the accent in this collection, any colour will work well. The more primary the colour, the stronger the impact you create. The best impact is achieved with a single colour, however, two similar colours like navy and azure will also work. Creating layers is a very popular way of displaying and accessorizing your space. Start with a wall paper and add a large mirror over it. Place a table in front of the mirror and then layer the table with a lamp, smaller art, a few vases, and perhaps some books. Be sure that no one element over powers the rest of the objects. The idea is the same with a wall collage where art and sculpture are combined. The selection of elements to be collected together follows the same principal.

We wanted to create a furniture collection that would work well for people searching for soft seating options in their homes. We selected fabrics and furniture sizes that generally work well in homes and allow designers to increase the size either by the inch in some pieces or by the seat on the sectionals.” Every item created in the GLEN AND JAMIE DESIGNER COLLECTION has been carefully thought out and developed, initially with their clients in mind.

BY EZRA LEE DESIGN+BUILD any other. For example, in this stunning home, you are met at the doorstep with a custom made, oversized, pivot-hinged, solid wood-framed front door that features a frosted glass center panel. This immediately creates a warmer welcome into what could be considered a very stripped down, raw interior. A polished concrete floor throughout the main level creates a consistent flow between otherwise very separate rooms, all of which are warmed up not only by the textured colour, but also by the radiant heating system installed within. Exposed steel beams with a satin finish, mixed with a simple, stacked brick create the industrial-like framework for an open-concept floor plan that so many seek in a residential space.

GIBSON LANE
Gibson Lane is located on one of the most expensive zip codes in The United States. This traditional 7,000 square foot, five bedroom home is located on the coveted Gibson Beach, with views of the Atlantic Ocean from all three levels. The house was built in 2010, and interior designer Tamara Magels’ client was the first owner. The homeowner, who lives there for the majority of the year, wanted the home to feel relaxed, but also glamorous and sophisticated. With a neutral pallet and cleanlined furniture as the base, the home’s interest is in the texture and eclectic mix of styles. With a budget of two million dollars, Tamara was able to be indulgent in what she chose for the interior.

Looking around her midcentury post and beam home, one can clearly see her expression. She mixes modern clean lines with rich fabrics, and combines new furniture pieces with ones that she’s collected from different eras from around the world. Her color choices are rich, bold and off beat. While some aspects of the design look almost museum worthy, the over-all feel is warm and inviting, with an indulgent edge. In her teens, despite her desire to become a decorator, LaCombe began traveling the world as an International Elite model. “Modelling is a very tough industry. It taught me how to be a business person, how to see myself as a brand, and a product. These skills helped immensely when I moved into the design field, which has always been my greatest passion”, says LaCombe. “Having had the opportunity to work in cities such as Milan, London and Paris, I was immersed in some of the world’s most historically relevant architecture and design. It broadened my aesthetic senses and trained my eye. Travel has been a very valuable source of inspiration for me.”

Entering the home is an unexpected delight, passing through a portion of the garage to reveal an inner courtyard and guest parking area surrounded by gardens. A whimsical sliding “barn door can close the vehicular entry off and contain the family dog. The front entry of the home is purposefully simple and unadorned; only a leisurely path leads to a singular door set within a curved wall of stone. From the entry into the glass hallway and the outdoor space beyond, the home is further organized into three parts that separate the more public from the private spaces. The main living spaces are centrally located, with the outer branches of the house accommodating the more private areas such as the bedrooms and art studio. Each section of the home is linked by hallways of abundant glass to once again maximize the amazing views. A key element of the Stock Farm Residence is the centrally located covered patio. This residence sits atop Nipomo Mesa, California, high above farm fields overlooking dunes and the Pacific Ocean. The client wanted a “Japanese Garden,” and a deck off of the back. Abstracting the quilt work from the nearby farm fields, the deck boards lay in alternate directions. The raised concrete planters hold succulents in crop rows, which adds a twist to the usual thought of a Japanese Garden. Beyond the deck and up to the bluff’s edge, one can find native plants that abstract the distant dunes in a softer curvaceous landscape. The deck creates a generous flow from the residence to the seating area provided by the planter walls and bench by the recycled glass fire pit.

EMBARK WITH US Preparing your home to be sold can be overwhelming and often emotional. Getting it just right the first time is crucial. Once you have made the decision to sell, you need to change the way you think about your home. It is imperative that you see your home from the buyer’s perspective. It’s hard to be objective about a place where you have spent endless hours and have built many memories in. This is one of the reasons agents suggest bringing in a stager or stylist to prep your home. It is important to realize that your home has now become a product to be marketed, much the same as products in a store. Staging is all about marketing a space using elements and principles of design. It is all about taking a space and making it appealing to the majority of people in a particular demographic, so it is important to keep the space as neutral as possible, while still adding that wow factor. Staging applies design principles, such as balance of a room, proximity of items to one another, and highlighting architectural features. Staging also encompasses, repetition of accessories, shape, and colour, which will result in the room coming to life. Stagers are knowledgeable in buyer trends, demographics and market groups. By understanding the purchaser’s expectations when looking for the perfect home, we can influence emotions and behaviour. DIY TIPS: 1. Grabbing Attention – Maximize your curbs appeal, as this is the first impression. Make sure that you are on top of your exterior maintenance by getting rid of unwanted weeds and garbage, trimming the bushes, shovelling the driveways, and ensuring the house number is visible. If you live in a condo, make sure the hallway is vacuumed, and that there is a fresh clean scent in the hall. 2. Squeaky Clean – Your place must be spotless. Things should smell fresh and airy. Ensure that there are embark | THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE | 69
EMBARK WITH US no smudges on glass, or dust on countertops. Hire a professional, it will be money well spent. 3. Paint – Keep it simple and fresh by choosing neutral colours and keep trims and ceilings white. 4. Light – Replace burnt out light bulbs. When there is no light, a space can look creepy. Consider adding accent lamps, floor lamps, or pendant lighting to brighten rooms. 5. Details – Fix leaking faucets and touch- up scratches or dents in high traffic areas. Replace screens or cracked windows. Always use fresh linens on beds and put out fresh white towels in the bathrooms. Live or silk greenery are also a nice added touch. 7. De-Clutter and Depersonalize – Get rid of the mess, clear out closets, and take things off the floor. This is a great time to create piles for charity and trash. Closets stuffed with items gives the impression there is no storage space in the home. Also, try to

There was no hope in salvaging and restoring the original building when even the supporting wood cribs were condemned. The owner, shared a vintage photograph of the boathouse that was taken in the winter of 1930 and expressed her hope that we could recreate a building that would evoke that earlier and carefree time. It was time to add and recreate everything that the old one had lacked: floor-to-ceiling windows opening the interior to the south light, sturdy hardwood floors milled from reclaimed lumber, a stone fireplace, a super-insulated building envelope to reduce energy consumption, and a deck overlooking the lake. An antique trunk with a tufted leather top stores the bedding and sits on top of a royal blue cow hide carpet. A pair of end tables are made from barrel stays, and bronze beach tower lamps light up the space. A large old truck has been repurposed into a desk. Horizontal striped linen sheers filter the light coming into the room. The sun room off of the kitchen doubles counter top coordinates with the grey stone fireplace and white walls. An oversized industrial style pendant hangs over the island and red leather bar stools add a punch of colour to the kitchen area. The nautical theme continues into the master bedroom with sail boat printed drapes, plaid and anchor accent cushions, and a lifesaver quilted coverlet. An old wooden king sized headboard contrasts with the white walls and looks out

10 HIDDEN SPOTS TO FIND EXTRA STORAGE BY LINDA J. VANDERKOLK
FROM CLUTTERBGONE | WWW.CLUTTERBGONE.CA
The truth about storage is that you can never have enough. It doesn’t matter whether your space is small or large. When considering storage options, keep your lifestyle in mind so you can develop rooms that are both sensible and cozy. Here are some ideas to help store, stack or stow your items away. 1. Wall partitions with built-in storage compartments Sometimes you need a divide and conquer approach to cater your space to specific tasks that suit the many needs of your family. Wall partitions are great because they not only serve to separate zones in your living space, but can also be aesthetically pleasing, functional and an efficient method to store anything from books, to games, decorative items and photos. Give yourself permission to not fill every nook and cranny. Keeping spaces open and clutter-free is the key to making this work. 2. Vintage suitcases Vintage leather or wicker suitcases can be stacked to serve as an end or coffee table while also providing hidden storage for your video or CD collections, photos or files. This is a great and inexpensive way to achieve extra storage space while creating an interesting design element. 3. Headboards that have storage shelves. The idea here is to have pieces that are multifunctional.

Everitt & Schilling tile was spawned out of the need for a creative interior design solution. I was working on a home for a client and couldn’t find the right solution that satisfied the desires of my client for a signature feature in a particular location in her home. My business partner and I even went to the extents of traveling to trade shows to try and find the right solution. This was a home that couldn’t just settle on a glass tile or something from a salvage yard, so we took the popularity of wood look ceramic and combined it with the trend towards reclamation and architectural salvage.

We invented a patent pending backer that allows the wood to move and expand on the wall while still having direct bond with the surface behind it.
embark | THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE | 103
EMBARK WITH US It is coated in a ceramic solution that allows it to be used in a number of incredible applications. It is environmentally friendly as we use a no voc finish, a low voc backing and all of the wood, including our hardwood is either reclaimed or repurposed and up-cycled. It is great for architectural and interior design because it is incredibly consistent in its color, size and unique patterning, but it is incredibly friendly to the homeowner to install as it can be put up on any existing surface with thin set or premium construction adhesive. We love how it looks on ceilings, reception desks, feature walls, back splashes, tub and bath surrounds and as accent art or bed feature walls. We really are revolutionizing the tile setting industry by allowing tile setters to now install feature walls in reclaimed wood as if they were now master carpenters. All the thinking has been done for you... easy to install, beautiful patterns that are amazing additions to any space.

• 3 cups light cream or whipping cream • 1⁄2 cup (31⁄2 ounces) granulated sugar

• 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
ORANGE LAYER

• 1 1⁄2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice, from 4 to 5 oranges • 1 1⁄2 teaspoons half and half • 1 1⁄2 teaspoons powdered sugar
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT:
Ice cream maker, 3-ounce Dixie cups, 5-ounce Dixie cups, Popsicle sticks
MAKETHE VANILLA ICE CREAM BASE: Bring the cream to a bare simmer in a 1-quart saucepan over medium-low heat, just until it is steaming and small bubbles form around the edges. Remove from heat and whisk in the sugar and vanilla until the sugar is fully dissolved. Transfer to a clean bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until fully chilled. When the ice cream base is fully chilled, freeze it in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When it has completed its cycle the ice cream will have the consistency of soft-serve.
ASSEMBLE THE POPSICLES:
Completely fill 6 (3-ounce) Dixie cups with the ice cream, insert Popsicle sticks, and freeze for 2 hours until fully hardened. While the vanilla layer chills, whisk the orange juice, half and half, and powdered sugar together in a liquid measuring cup. Set 6 (5-ounce) Dixie cups on a small, freezer-safe plate or baking sheet and pour 1⁄4 cup of the orange juice mixture into each cup. Peel the Dixie cups off the frozen ice cream and insert the pops into the orange juice–filled Dixie cups, pushing down to displace the juice and cover the ice cream entirely. Add more juice to cover as necessary. You may have to weigh the ice cream down with an additional baking sheet and bag of frozen peas to make sure the vanilla layer stays submerged. Freeze for 4 hours, until the juice is fully hardened. Peel the Dixie cups off before serving. Store the Popsicles in the freezer in an airtight container for up to a month. embark | THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE | 107

Interior Designer, Garrison Hullinger is on a mission to swap the winter blues out with the spring hues! “I try to create homes that encompass something colorful and comfortable, yet embodies timeless design,” he says of his design. “There is nothing better than knowing someone is going to love living in their home for years to come.” The color guru is an aficionado for finding colorful home décor that is both functional and practical, even when it comes to updating a home’s interior décor for the changing seasons. “Many people think that they cannot afford to update their interiors with fabulously chic décor that mimics the seasonal changes, but that isn’t the truth.” He urges you to “build up your arsenal of beautiful things by being smart and purchasing linens, pillows and the like after each season for some great deals.”

IN LIVING ROOM COLOR
No matter what the size of your home is, or what your budget is, swapping out the previous seasons’ décor can be a simple and fun task that you can look forward to doing within your own home. Rather than thinking about swapping bigger items out, like sofas, rugs, etc. think smaller scale. “Again, it depends on your budget, but create a list of items in each room that need to be purged and then you’re left with your starting point.” He urges people to “store your extra-warm throws, pillows and wintery scented candles and bring out the freshness of spring with colorful, light and airy home décor.”

WINE & DINE YOUR FRIENDS IN COLORFUL SCENTS
“Dining rooms are my favorite place to start a seasonal swap out, because it’s the easiest place to update, and that’s where most of the entertaining happens.” He says to, “consider adding a bold colored geometric table cloth or runner on your dining room table for a playful touch. If given an option select fragrant flowers over variety for a fresher appeal; such as gardenia.” Here’s to you sprucing up a fresh and new look for spring!
