a letter from the editors This issue marks our full first year of Embark
Magazine. The journey started off as a spin-off from our sister publication, Remark Magazine, which lead us down the path of the exciting and very
supportive world of design and decor. It is amazing how many people support eachother through
constructive criticism, collaboration and honest passion for their talents.
That’s why having Meredith Heron on our cover was the perfect way to sign-off on our first year.
She is a strong character, an honest voice and very encouraging. Her passion for all things design
and taking risks and exploring her opportunities
embodies what we try and strive for here at Embark. We want to thank all our contributors as well,
especially the ones who stuck it out in almost
every issue. You make Embark a special thing and
because of that, we hold you all in very high regard personally and professionally.

HIGHGATE BY DOROTHEE JUNKIN WWW.DJDS.US
I
n North London, England’s fashionable residential area of Highgate, a private client of Dorothee Junkin of DJDS had purchased a substantial detached 1920’s family
home. The residence with its extensive grounds overlooks the famous Highgate Ponds, offering spectacular far reaching views over the 800 acres of Hampstead Heath. The
spacious seven-bedroom property is very much a traditional country house located in close distance to Central London.
While embracing the character and traditional elements as well as a certain quirky
character of the house, the client’s aim was to turn the property into a contemporary
family home to which his family could retreat at the end of the day from their fast paced and international lifestyles.
Dorothee Junkin was brought in to devise an interior scheme, as well as adding
numerous changes and extensions to the existing building. At this point the client had
already moved into the property with just a few furniture pieces and was relying on the designer to fully furnish and accessorize the home in close collaboration with his wife. After outlining a general design direction and priority of rooms to be looked at first,
the actual design work began. Careful consideration of the steps in the design process were necessary to ensure that the traditional elements such as the beautiful dark
wood paneling, feature fireplaces and decorative plaster ornaments would become a
harmonious backdrop for the eclectic mix of contemporary and vintage furniture. The work schedule of the contractor and all other suppliers had to be carefully arranged
around the client’s travel and presence at the property to inconvenience the life of the family as little as possible. Parallel to the interior design process, a fully coordinated system of the latest audio and visual technologies were installed in a thoughtfully
concealed way to offer all of the amenities of a contemporary luxury home without attracting unwanted attention in the carefully balanced interiors.
Highgate was particularly interesting and at the same time sometimes challenging
project for Dorothee. It was a wonderful process to work hand in hand with the client to furnish the home, while at the same time construction and refurbishments had to
happen in short time windows during the client’s travels. The moment a room was fully completed and ready for the daily use of the family were particularly rewarding, as the client’s livable home expanded month by month and it was wonderful to share the excitement along the way.

The living room, clad with intricately woven legacy wall covering, was a space the lady of the house was particularly interested in, and for which she was envisioning a floral theme.
Dorothee advised on a layered floral design in subtle hues picking up on the cool colour tones of the wallpaper to add detail while at the same time avoiding to overwhelm the space with pattern.

The rather traditionally panelled library was one of the first rooms to be looked at. It wasfurnished with
a combination of contemporary
pieces like the oversized bespoke lounge sofa, eco wood lounge
chairs, a designer Persian silk and

African collectibles. With the clients being passionate readers and book collectors, this room offers a calm,
balanced and welcoming space to
read and gather as a family or with friends in an informal setting.

For the master bedroom and bathroom,
both overlooking the lush green woodlands of the Heath and gardens of the property,
shades of green became the leitmotiv of the interior concept. The client had asked for a
calm and uncluttered design of the master bedroom and thus the dĂŠcor reflects a rather understated elegance, paying close attention to the soft furnishings in silk and fur to soften the overall feel of the room.

The Belgravia Townhouse INTERIOR BY: LAURA HAMMETT WWW.LAURAHAMMETT.COM
DEVELOPERS: RESIDENCE ONE WWW.RESIDENCEONE.CO.UK
This stunning five-storey, six bedroom townhouse on Wilton Street in Belgravia, London, England
has been redeveloped by Residence One with full bespoke turnkey interiors by Laura Hammett.
The house, which was built in the early 1800’s
by renowned architect Thomas Cubitt, has been
restored to its former glory, with Laura Hammett recreating the original period features, whilst
balancing these with contemporary and luxurious finishes. During the redevelopment, an original door was uncovered. It’s simple panelling and
beautiful design was then replicated throughout all of the interior doors. This magnificent six-bedroom property is rich in history and Laura Hammett has
worked hard to ensure the home remains true to its original splendour.
Laura Hammett, Co-Owner of Laura Hammett, comments: “We worked very closely with the
listed building consent on the architectural detail so that every element was historically accurate
and sympathetic to its Regency heritage. During demolition we uncovered an original door with beautiful simple panelling, a design which was
replicated through all of the interior doors. We
approached the design with understated elegance as we wanted to complement rather than compete with the classical architecture of the home.”

including Lutron lighting, Crestron Audio and Visual Systems, and, air conditioning throughout. The house sees a return to traditional English living and features a formal drawing room that
occupies almost a full floor and is complete with a baby grand piano. Additionally, there is a
formal dining room and a private study. There are staff quarters and guest bedrooms on the lower ground, which can also be accessed by their own entrance for complete privacy from the rest of the house.

with tank tops, a pair of well-worn lace up boots and the Irish, Red Sox, collegiate and post-grads. It was there I would attach myself to a seat at a local bar
and hang on the every glance, word of my yet to be
boyfriend. Being the ‘In’ place at the time, just getting past the front door was in itself a feat. But I had two
things going for me, I was young and I was a master of flirting. Deep within the sea of pink and green
clad White Anglo-Saxon Protestants stood this sable
haired bohemian wild child marred by being the first generation of children of divorced parents. Within
short order, the blond haired U Penn grad became
my boyfriend and there I would sit, night after night laying ownership to my knight in tarnished armor.
One night, my fellow barflies included two woman
speaking French. With a year of study in 2nd grade and a subsequent two years of French ll, I began
to converse with the pair. I asked them if they were from Paris and one of the women queried as to why I had asked. Brazenly I stated the Parisians
were a snooty bunch. One of the women took a
moment of restrained indignation, then, replied, “Yes, that’s true.” Now having yet to go to Paris, I had made this pronouncement without ever
having even stepped foot in France. But from that moment on, the Swiss girl, the Parisian and the New Englander became inseparable.
Being the sole American, our crowd was a blend of
Spaniards, French and Swiss. Meals were on Euro time and often culminated with dinner at ‘Division 16’, our home away from our home away. Conversations may have begun in Spanish, which slid into French and
time we began to scatter. I moved to the West Coast, at one point even lost touch. Much later I found out my Swiss friend had even spent a year in LA before running away to the more-sane playground of San
Francisco. Eventually the Parisian moved out west too and though I can’t tell you how, we reunited.
Fast forward. Last Spring, after years of threatening to ingratiate myself on the hospitality of my Swiss friend, I took a five country European adventure
ending in Geneva. By then, my Swiss friend was back in Switzerland full time and offered for me to stay
with her during my Swiss stint. Neither rich enough nor foolish enough to decline, I happily accepted
the gracious invitation. Arriving via Vienna, my friend picked me up at the Geneva airport and we picked up as if we had never lost contact.
An hours drive to Échenevex, a small town on the French Swiss border, we arrived at the childhood home my friend had inherited. During our time
apart, my friend had created two of the most well
behaved and charming children, a boy, 8 and a 10
year old girl, each of whom had learned to make a killer cappuccino, courtesy of their mother. What
more could an espresso addict ask for? And yes those Europeans do love their caffeine as much as we do. From the living and dining areas, on a clear day,
past the acres of verdant pastures, one could see the top of Monte Blanc, the highest mountain in
the Swiss Alps. We spent the weekend contentedly
eating, meandering around the property, visiting the horses, playing with the kids, dog and watching my friend’s daughter compete in horse shows. It was

Where does your story start? How did you become introduced to design and what drove you to the path you would inevitably pursue as your career? My parents were and still are all about having a well-
decorated home and are extremely house proud. When they split, my dad hired a decorator. Oh how I wished (still do) he had married her. I loved flipping through her wallpaper books. From then on (I was ten) I was
hooked. I was always consumed by the need to design and decorate even as an elementary school teacher. I
survived teaching for seven years because I was going to school at night for design. I found a connection to
my source and it fuelled me to make the career change permanent on my 30th birthday. It’s who I am.

How do you view the world and get inspired? What are your most favourite designed places in memory? I truly believe, to do your best work as a designer,
travel is a must. Experiencing other cultures is a must. Getting out of your own comfort zone is necessary
so that you are able to push others out of their own. I find inspiration in the oddest of places. I shared a sneak peek of my second fabric collection with JF

Your family is obviously important to you. How has getting married and having your son in your life changed you? How do they enhance your life both professionally and personally? My family is very important to me. My husband is my compliment. He encourages me to grow and shine
and never tries to compete. He builds me up and is the
reason I can do all of the amazing things I can - because I have him to always rely on. Working together can be
challenging at times but more often than not it’s a gift and
luxury that I try and never take for granted. He also does all of the cooking. God bless him. When our son arrived, he
had the most unexpected effect on me - he chilled me out. I don’t get nearly as ruffled as I used to. He has taught me patience and kindness but he also is one of the reasons
I am so fierce and speak up for those who can’t or won’t speak up for themselves. My son made me an activist - I
am compelled to fight for a better world, for equality and
freedom for the safety and well-being of others. Once you become a mom to your own child, you become a mom to all other children born to moms. It’s primal.
My first born though is my business. I’m just as fierce about protecting and standing up for it. We joke that it’s the
red hair but it truly is who I am and when I am passionate about something I will go to the mat for it.
As a well respected and very direct person, you hold no punches when it comes to sharing your opinions. Do you find yourself at times surrounded by bad interiors that just make you want to tear down everything and fix it for them? I am routinely amazed at what gets exalted and lauded with praise. I expect better. I demand better. This starts
with myself. I hold myself to a higher standard. I am always pushing to do better and to grow as a designer. I hope I encourage others to do the same.

Hire a designer absolutely, but keep in mind this is

for the entire project you may only be able to afford
their work, their profitability and their expectations against at least a decade to start to find their own voice and
then another half decade to hone and refine this into a
coherent viewpoint and message. After 17 years I’m just starting to get it. I’ve made so many mistakes. This is the best education you will ever get. Do the work. Focus on that. Then maybe you’ll be ready for more. There’s a lot of noise being shouted at designers. License, multiple income streams, products, coach others, T.V. It puts

any idea how sick I was. Fortunately, my team of medical professionals at Toronto Western Hospital were equally
as aggressive and referred me to a clinical trial. I won the lottery with this trial - the first injection had an immediate and dramatic effect and reversed some of the damage
being done to my joints. Within three weeks I was able to run up a set of stairs. Within three months the fog lifted. I’ve been in remission for two years and there isn’t a
day that goes by that I don’t thank my lucky stars for our
healthcare system in Canada, the Arthritis Research being
done at Toronto Western hospital and Dr. Arthur Bookman who chose to fight on my behalf when I couldn’t. I
encourage everyone to support Arthritis Research but specifically Rheumatoid Disease.

The San Fran Victorian BY: SARA STORY DESIGN | PHOTOGRAPHY: ERIC LAIGNEL
Built in 1885, this San Francisco Victorian, located in the Liberty Hill historical district, is a unique
blend of eclectic taste and well-traveled style. It was important for owners Brian Garrett and Stephen
Fronk, to maintain the style and tenor of the original architectural details in the apartment - thick crown moldings, door and window casings, as well as a stone fireplace in the dining area -- all while incorporating modern touches.
The kitchen is blend of materials - wooden bases, lacquered uppers, with a quartzite island and a
honed Gris de Siena limestone floor that flows into
the light filled den. A dramatic sculptural spiral stair, with modern wood and metal detailing leads to the sweeping roof deck.
The master bedroom sets the color tone for the
apartment - with a fresh, bold wallpaper choice .
The dining room boasts a dramatic Tony Duquette chandelier softened by lacquered chairs and a parchment covered table.

The North American bathroom has had quite an
evolution since the beginning of indoor plumbing. From a humble start as a place for hidden simple
hygiene, the bathroom has evolved through a home grooming station phase all the way to the current trend of lux ensuite master bath that serves as a
personal oasis. With that evolution, HGTV and the digital world of Houzz, Pinterest and boatloads of
lifestyle and decor blogs have also made it a status symbol. Yes, the bathrooms in our homes need to
be chic just like our other home furnishings and our
personal wardrobes. What's chic this year? I noticed some trends in haute homewares at Design and
Construction Week, a show for trade professionals
held in Las Vegas this year, that make some serious home fashion statements. Here are some of my
favorite "bathing beauties" to make your baths as chic as your wardrobe and your homes the envy of the socialmedia-sphere.

My inspiration stems from the Fibionacci spiral which is a mathematical algorithm. It is also depicted in the Nautilus shape which is created by nature with this mathematical formula.
Inspired by the graphic images of urban artists like Banksy and graffiti artist Denial, this one word, “HOME”, is powerful in its simplicity. At once, the word “home” evokes comfort, love, support.
This represents “Steel magnolia” which as a southerner relates to me since I have lost loved ones to breast cancer and can attest to the strength it takes to fight this disease.

My inspiration came from a piece of vintage fabric. After studying the piece of fabric, I sketched my own design using three bright colors to encompass the vintage feel of the original fabric square.
I was inspired by aerial views from my air travels and how I noticed that in any area all roads, no matter how confusing, lead to common areas.
The teal shapes are made out of the lowercase letter “k” turned and cut apart. Bold, geographic prints were my inspiration and I love typography, hence the design from a letter.

The mat draws inspiration from the breast cancer ribbon and transforms it into a 19th century graphic which makes reference to the fabric pattern Gotham Sable and the curvilinear patterns from designer Rene Prou in the 1930s.
One of our secret items of delight is socks! Argyle has both style and class, with a retro homey feels that says “you’re welcome to come in and warm up with our family.
My mat was inspired by creative and trendy ideas. I wanted to create something original, but keep it fun and enticing. The opposing colors make the design stand out, leaving a memorable mark in the viewer’s brain.
PAUL SEMKULEY
KARL LOHNES
MERIDITH HERON
My inspiration came from the rose and how it was used in stained glass . I interpreted gathering pink ribbons to create a blooming flower, with a spiral effect, so that each ribbon overlaid one another.
I chose the on-trend colors of grey and pink for my mat design. I wanted to create a mat that was trendy and memorable, yet still a bit humorous. I believe my mat will resonate with many people who have overcome hardships.
I wanted to create a mat that would welcome loved ones into the home. I was inspired by Art Deco fonts, so I decided to place the word ‘Welcome’ across the center of the mat. I then paired it with a cheetah print background to bring a twist of creative personality into the design. THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE

QUICK & EASY SOLUTIONS TO REFRESH YOUR HOME PRESENTED BY GARRISON HULLINGER INTERIOR DESIGN
The New Year marks a lot of goals, new beginnings
and is an optimal time to hit the reset button in your life. So rather than waiting for spring cleaning, pull up your sleeves and make your home reflective of
how the year ahead is going to be for you – clean, organized and ready for anything!
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design’s Associate

things done around your home, not only to improve your mood but your productivity!

Quick Fixes For Less Clutter Ullal asks, “Have you ever found yourself reading a design
magazine where all of the interior photos are almost 100% free of
clutter? Puzzling, because we all
know household items inevitably seem to find their way onto our tables, floors and countertops.” Have no fear - whether it is
a mudroom, kid’s room or a
home office, decorative storage baskets can be a great way to get organized, remove visual
clutter, and is an exciting way to introduce patterns or textures
to any space. Baskets come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials that will work with
your existing cabinetry or open
shelving. Ullal encourages you to “try selecting a series of three or five coordinating baskets - they don’t have to match but should
visually relate - as a unique and enhanced way to store items.
This will quickly hide junk and
visually give you the most bang
for your buck. If you want to take organization to the next level,
try categorizing the storage bins by attaching tags with ribbons
or crafty numbers on the face of
the basket, there is a permanent
home for everything, we just have to create that functional area to put them.”

Multi-Use Storage Solutions Tired of staring at those extra blankets, pillows or toys year after year? Do not be afraid to find a cozy place to call home for these items, Ullal suggests trying “a
simple DIY project – an upholstered-storage bench.” With endless possibilities and configurations, the
upholstered storage bench is a perfect solution for a
variety of household items. Some options to consider are laid out by Ullal who says that it “could be a
lovely built-in bench near a window or a freestanding bench piece in any room. The interior of the bench can be altered to neatly tuck away those floating
items and be readily accessible.” Don’t forget this
leaves opportunity to choose a patterned upholstery fabric or a splash of color. This is a perfect solution for a child’s play room or a living space but can be
adjusted for any room of the home. Storage can be
fun! Find organization within…an upholstered bench.

Spruce Up Your Drawers Ullal says, “if you are anything like myself, you love color, pattern, and surprise! If you think you have
already covered your home from floor-to-ceiling in color and pattern, think again! Decorative drawer liners are your next project this spring.” Creating your own drawer liners is one of the easiest and
affordable DIY projects out there. Ullal confirms that by doing this, it is “creating a simple pleasure for
you and your family, but also a joy for house guests
to experience.” This is an aesthetically pleasing and functional addition to any existing drawer or chest. “Sourcing actual drawer liner products are great,
but” Ullal recommends, “to try exploring the world of
wallpapers too!” Once you add your favorite patterns or colors to your drawers, you may find yourself smiling every time you open them!

remodel, Ullal says “you can still mix things up right at home. Think about purchasing a few new bold pillows or luscious throw blankets to add a burst
of fresh design to your existing space.” There is no
need to go overboard and purchase a new sofa set when you can spruce up your existing palette with
interchangeable pillow slip covers or even a dining room chair slip cover. The possibilities are endless! Ullal guarantees, “a new element of design in any
room can change everything.” Think about switching

ALL BLACK & WHITE TO ME PHOTOGRAPHY BY ECSTATIC PHOTOGRAPHY; SIMON REMARK
Sometimes we spend too much time
trying to come up with the perfect colour palette when designing a space that we
forget about the absence of it . The truth about black & white is that it can be very dramatic, classy & elegant when pulled together correctly.
In a recent project my clients were look-
ing for a overall more sophisticated main family room. They didn’t want to commit to any particular colour as they wanted
to have flexibility in their design options ahead. We were asked to integrate into
our design the clients existing coffee ta-
ble and sofa other than that this client like many gave us “Carte Blanche” creatively with their space.

WHILE DESIGNING THIS BLACK & WHITE
THEME FAMILY ROOM WE IMPLEMENTED: • Dark charcoal and black drapes against a medium grey sofa to create overall contrast in the room.
• A black and white cowhide rug against a crisp
black shiny glass table with chrome legs for drama.
• A stunning white leather chairs in front of a light grey wall back drop and bold simple artwork
• Reflective mirrored console table with strong
black wood gives a crisp sharp edge to the piece
ª An eclectic mixture of textures were used in the accessories, from basket weave candle holder, mirrors, glass vases, metals, furry cushions,
patterned fabrics, silks, tapestry, suedes, velvets and glitters all creating strong visual interests and richness.
• The funkiest feature to the design was the shiny
metallic black white and silver wallpaper feature that really adds drama to an otherwise dull TV wall.
Using the colours of black and whites into this space has
now provided my clients with longevity and flexibility with their design in the future
They can easily add any jolts of colour such as; red,
greens, yellows, blues or anything they would like as accents in the space should they desire to quickly
change to adapt to future emerging colour trends.

ROBERT SZOT Robert Szot was raised in Texas and immigrated to New York City at 25 years old. He is an untrained, self-taught painter. Szot has exhibited throughout North America and internationally. His work can be found in important private collections and was recently collected by Credit Suisse. He is represented by Muriel Guepin in New York City. “It isn’t natural for me to see whimsy and lightness in one of my paintings because they tend to be quite argumentative when I’m working. My process is kaleidoscopic in nature where one decision leads to five or ten others and those decisions must be addressed or eliminated in order to reach a greater conclusion” said Robert. Robert goes on to say, “I am overly sentimental by habit and I have to force myself to destroy parts of the painting I may have liked in order to complete a better composition. In the end nothing is too precious. The result is a lot of paint and a lot of editing. When I start to see the lightness and an ease in tension I know the painting is close to being finished. I guess when it starts to look effortless I know I’ve accomplished something”. Robert has worked in Brooklyn for the last 13 years. “There is so much access in Brooklyn with educated communities hungry for culture and art. There is also room in Brooklyn, space to work, and a growing artist community that cares about reputation and concerns themselves with exhibiting important work. It is paradise”, he states. You can see more of his work at www.robertszot.com
