This home was originally a builder’s spec home with incredibly dated finishes. The new owners, recent transplants from the city, wanted a cost effective way to create a cool, urban vibe that could also accommodate their expanding family. They were able to create an urban edge with affordable upgrades to the fireplace, wallpaper, mouldings and furniture, all while being respectful to the home’s original charm. The end result was exactly what they wanted; affordable, trendy, fun and practical all at the same time!

Master Bedroom For this generously-sized master bedroom, we started with a calming, neutral palette and perfectly proportioned furnishings that fill but don’t cramp the space. Varying textures, patterns and fabrics in the same colour story, including pops of deeper shades, add interest to the room. The wide-plank oak floors in a warm tone are a homey touch, paying tribute to the past. Chunky crown moulding separating the vaulted ceiling from the walls help to bring the eye down, bringing what could feel like a cavernous room down to a more ‘human’ scale. Custom blinds for privacy are neatly framed with crisply tailored drapery in a reverse pleat, finished in a contrasting band. There’s always room for a bit of sparkle and here we’ve added it with the pendant chandelier, the traditional, mirrored side tables and with the nail head detail on the chairs. It is a large space with a cozy feeling.

Master Bathroom Custom-made cabinetry takes advantage of the tall ceilings in this ‘masterful’ en-suite. Fine trim details such as the ‘feet’ at the base, the shelf and vanity look like free-standing furniture pieces. In contrast to the dark wood, the counter is topped with pristine, white granite, the under mount double sinks flank the integrated vanity. The taps are the jewels of this room, crystal clear, multifaceted, and beautiful. A separate glassed-in shower, trimmed in dark wood to balance the cabinetry on the opposite wall features a mosaic-tiled floor and ceiling with a rain shower head. The same mosaic tile is repeated in lines between the marble floor tiles to playfully break up the expanse. The stylish soaker tub makes an inviting statement under the large window. As a designer, I am routinely called upon to declare what it is that is trendy, what is “oh so dead� to me and the like. I find that this puts me in an immediate conflict of interest with clients both current and future. I do not design based on trends, though they will often influence some of my preferences. However, rarely if ever am I influenced by something that is currently trending - I prefer to work ahead of trends and be a forecaster or a tastemaker. To that end, I can proudly declare that I have been working with brass fixtures in my kitchens and bathrooms for a good solid three years now and I am pleased to see that many plumbing companies have caught on to this trend and are providing designers and consumers alike with a great selection of finishes to choose from. The re-emergence of brass as a player in the fixture game is actually the first wave of what is going to be a major design shift away from contemporary and minimal influences toward a return to the traditional. Traditional decor and decorating is coming back in a very big way. Brass, chintz, large scale florals not just as accents but as major upholstery and drapery statements rooms clutch and

Pomegranate & Pear Salad MAKES 1 SERVING
• 1 pear, cored and thinly sliced • 3 cups spinach leaves, divided • 1⁄2 cup pomegranate seeds • 1⁄4 cup roughly chopped pecans • 4 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese • 3 tablespoons sherry vinaigrette • 1 quart-size mason jar SHERRY VINAIGRETTE • 2 1⁄2 tablespoons sherry vinegar • pinch of salt • freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 3 tablespoons olive oil
Whisk together the vinegar, salt and pepper. Slowly add the olive oil, whisking until the dressing thickens. Place the pear slices in the bottom of the mason jar. Layer 2 cups of the spinach on top of the pear, then add the pomegranate seeds, another 1⁄2 cup spinach and the chopped pecans. Finish with the remaining 1⁄2 cup spinach and the blue cheese. Make a small cup out of parchment paper at the top of the jar and pour in the vinaigrette dressing. Seal the jar and refrigerate until ready to use. 24

• 3 tablespoons lime vinaigrette (recipe follows) • 1⁄2 cup black beans, rinsed and drained • 1⁄2 red vine-ripened tomato, diced • 1⁄4 red bell pepper, diced • 1⁄4 yellow bell pepper, diced • 1⁄2 cup diced avocado (optional) • 1⁄2 cup corn kernels, fresh or frozen • 2 cups mixed salad greens • 2 tablespoons cheddar cheese, grated • 1 quart-size Mason jar LIME VINAIGRETTE • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro • pinch of salt • freshly ground black pepper, to taste • dash of hot sauce (optional) • 3 tablespoons olive oil
Whisk together the lime juice, cilantro, salt, pepper and hot sauce (if using). Slowly add the olive oil, whisking until the dressing thickens. Start by pouring the vinaigrette into themason jar. Spinach, Radish, & Quinoa Salad
• 1⁄3 cup diced vine-ripened tomatoes • 1⁄3 cup fresh peas (or substitute sugar snap peas) • 1⁄2 cup thinly sliced radishes • 2 cups spinach leaves • 1 quart-size mason jar BLUEBERRY VINAIGRETTE • 3 tablespoons fresh blueberries • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1⁄4 teaspoon honey • pinch of salt • freshly ground black pepper to taste • 4 to 5 tablespoons olive oil
Place the blueberries, vinegar, honey, salt and pepper in a blender and
blend until smooth. With the blender running, slowly add the olive oil until it is the right consistency.
Rinse the quinoa thoroughly under running water. Place in a small
saucepan with the water and bring
to a boil over high heat. Reduce the
heat to a simmer and cook, covered, for 15 minutes, until the water has
been absorbed. Let the quinoa cool before adding it to the salad.
Layer the ingredients in the mason
jar, starting with the vinaigrette and continuing with the cucumbers,
tomatoes, peas and radishes. Add

Whisk together the vinegar, salt and pepper. Slowly add the olive oil, whisking until the dressing thickens. abrina Soto has made a name for herself in the industry of interior design, becoming one of the most in-demand designers. She is currently the host of
HGTV’s The High/Low Project, where she and her team help create couples’ dream rooms. Sabrina has also hosted other HGTV shows such as Get It Sold, and Real Estate Intervention. Since the age of seven, Sabrina knew that she had a passion for design. “I remember trying to rearrange my furniture and making DIY projects with my mom” Soto said. “My mom was a party planner and decorator, so I was constantly surrounded with crafts, fabric and, paint swatches. I have always been a clean freak, which is why organization is such a huge part of my design process.” She goes on to say, “I am a total homebody. I love to entertain and live comfortably in a space filled with the things I adore. My heart is my home, (as corny as that sounds,) and I love creating that feeling for my clients.” Lucky for her, her parents have always been fully supportive of what she wanted to do. “My father is a news producer, so we always had camera equipment around and it was a regular occurrence to have a camera pointed at my sister and I. I actually have footage pretending I was hosting my own

show in the fifth grade. I’ve always wanted to do design and be a television host, I just never thought that I could do them both simultaneously!” Sabrina explains that though she went to design school, she considers herself to be “self-taught”. She is a LEED accredited designer (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which helped her to learn about building green. She adds this piece of advice; “I think to become a great designer, you have to travel a lot and just be in the field. The more that you are actually designing, sourcing, and installing, the better you will become.” There are many challenges in being a designer. “The hardest challenge for me in the beginning was articulating why I made design decisions. I would constantly have to explain to the camera why I made every single choice. There were times that I just felt like saying ‘because it looks good!’, but I had to dissect every move”. As it is already pointed out, Sabrina is all over the HGTV channel. Some may be wondering what her favourite show to host is. Sabrina says, she simply cannot pick one. However, she loved Get it Sold, since it was her introduction to HGTV.

How did she feel about working on such a large show that was so different from anything she had ever done before? “It was fun but very different from any HGTV show I’ve ever worked on. There were hundreds of volunteers, a large crew and everything needed to get done in ten days. The before and afters were amazing and I’m not just speaking about the house, the show helped so many families It was amazing”. When Sabrina isn’t designing, or hosting shows. Unlike most of the houses in Spitalfields, London, England, this house is not Georgian, but rather one of the first buildings built in the area after WWII. It stands out due to its classic 1950’s architecture. The house was originally built as an industrial unit and used latterly as student accommodation. The present owners, Eleanor and her partner Chris, wanted to branch out into property development, and wished to start locally in an area which they knew intimately. Sensing an opportunity in the future, Eleanor and Chris sensibly pre-arranged the finance for such a project, so that when this particular house came onto the market, they were able to snap it up immediately. As they already live on the same street, the house fit their ‘local criteria’ perfectly. Having lived on the street herself for fourteen years, Eleanor had an excellent grasp on the likely future buyers profile, so she had a clear vision and drive for the project. properties of this size in London would have been converted with families in mind, but this area of Spitalfield tends to be popular with couples who do not have to factor in the needs of children. As such, the house was designed as a two bedroom home, with the option of a third bedroom in the basement. The architect, Rupert Lowe and his team presented options, from which Eleanor chose the finishes for the bathrooms, which in addition to the stunning staircase, were the only rooms that were previously finished with any real personality. That is when interior designer, Clare Pascoe was brought in to furnish, decorate and style the interiors. 38

Rupert’s team took inspiration from the remaining original features and details, then replicated them throughout the house. Specific examples include the stunning curved teak handrail which runs the full height of the home. The staircases were also widened to bring in more light to the lower levels. The entrance hall has a feature wall of Iroko clad veneer, going up the oak stair case. Veneer walls were very typical of the 1950’s, and even more relevant to the area, as Spitalfields was the veneering capital during that period. At the rear of the property, originally there was a two storey space, which had reduced light and a low ceiling. This was opened up into a nine metre tall gallery style space, as a designated party room. To add humour to the design of the space, it was accessorised with tall panels, a Shakesperean bust, and a mannequin lamp by

EMBARK WITH US A few months back I was called to design a small Manhattan kitchen. The clients were a passionate cook and his wife that wanted to create a working kitchen to house lots of pots and gadgets, dishes and spices galore and let him unleash his inner foodie. The funny thing was, the clients had already purchased a boatload of high end appliances including a wine refrigerator and a steam oven and the room was truly tiny. Being innovative about the use of space and the desire for the look of old New York scullery built-ins brought us to a design that really makes the most of the space. I even found a place for a niche to house the Bose that wafts soft classical music while the culinary masterpieces are being created. Unleashing your inner foodie is a great reason to plan a kitchen remodel and even in a tight environ you can make it work.

“Palo” means “fire” in Finnish, which reflects the company’s roots in modern design, and Foo’s fondness for Scandinavian restraint. “My father received his architectural training in the U.K. in the early sixties, where European modernism dominated,” says Foo, “I grew up in a suburban home that slowly transformed from a standard rancher into an open-planned, vaulted space with shoji screens and lots of white paint - I guess I absorbed the aesthetic through immersion.” All of Paloform’s products are designed with clean lines and minimalist detailing, allowing the materials - concrete and steel - to speak for themselves. The company currently produces seven models of outdoor fire pits in various configurations, from simple bowls to dramatic linear fires. Komodo is their latest offering, a seven-foot-long by two-foot-high linear fire pit that offers new landscape design possibilities: it can be used as a dramatic divider to define social spaces, as a grand central feature of a backyard plan, or even in sequence to create a spectacular wall of fire. 86

EMBARK WITH US Sited on a sloping and densely wooded lot along the Potomac River in the Falcon Ridge neighborhood where exceptional architecture on large, verdant lots is the norm, the owners of this new home required a plan flexible enough to accommodate a growing family, a variety of in-home entertainment options, and recreational pursuits for children and their friends. Stylistically, our clients desired an historic aesthetic reminiscent of an English baronial manor that projects the traditional values and culture of Virginia and Washington D.C. In short, this is a trophy home meant to convey power, status and wealth. Due to site constraints, house size, and a basement sport court, we employed a straightforward structural scheme overlaid with a highly detailed exterior and interior envelope. Featuring six fireplaces, coffered ceilings, a two-story entry foyer complete with a custom entry door, our solution employs a series of formally organized principal rooms overlooking private terraces and a large tract of pre-civil war Black Walnut trees. The large formal living area, dubbed the Hunt Room, is the home’s show piece space and is finished with cherry wainscoting, a Rumford fireplace, media center, full wet bar, antiqueglass cabinetry and two sets of French doors leading to an outdoor dining terrace. The Kitchen features floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, top of the line appliances, walk-in pantry and a family-dining area. The sunken family room boasts custom built-ins, expansive picture windows, wood-burning fireplace and access to the conservatory which warehouses a grand piano in a radiused window bay overlooking the side yard.

JAMES WYPER When decorating your home, we believe a personal statement can be made through the pieces of art you choose to hang on your walls. Sometimes they are intentional and themed with a room, and other times they can be statements of who you are. Art allows our souls to escape and explore beauty through still imagery that provokes our minds to react to what we see. James Wyper is self-represented. He has sold over 200+ paintings to over 100 private and corporate collections in Europe and N. America. Paintings can be had for between two and tenthousand dollars.
INSPIRATION:
James is a working artist, essentially selftaught, and self-represented. He has been painting full-time for ten years, but before that, he worked a variety of labour jobs. James drove delivery trucks, worked in warehouses, planted trees in Northern Saskatchewan, he simply comes from a blue-collar family, where what’s valued is having something to show at the end of a day’s work. So a practical inspiration for him is simply the desire to make something by hand, to have something to show.
A painting is an interesting thing to show. They’re kind of magical in the sense that the good ones are cherished - maybe they’ll be kept by someone, or some group of people, for decades or more. And over that time, they continue to do a job, to work like a machine which won’t wear out. They continue to speak, so to me the very objects are inspiring, which is why I like to make them.
ARTISTIC EXPRESSION:
For James, it’s important to express certain realizations non-verbally. In the case of his paintings, their job or work is to be portals, doorways to the idea of unity consciousness, or the idea that we are animated by consciousness which permeates everything and is shared among us. If he paints well, by getting himself out of the way and just channeling, then the painting becomes a vibrating portal to the level of consciousness from which it was inspired. That’s why the expression is important, because if anyone feels that level through the painting when they see it, then a real communication (or communion) has happened. The best example he can give is that occasionally when he makes a painting for someone and show it to them, they burst into tears. “It’s beautiful when that happens, and I feel there’s purpose in it.”

• 2 oz beet-infused dry gin or vodka • 1 oz beet and juniper berry shrub • ½ oz freshly squeezed lemon juice • 2 to 3 oz tonic water • 1 pickled beet, as garnish • 1 trimmed scallion, as garnish • Coarse salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste Fill an 8 to 10-ounce wine goblet or highball glass with medium ice cubes; add the beet-infused liquor, shrub, and lemon juice. Gently stir until just blended. Top with tonic water and stir gently. Garnish with a pickled beet and scallion and season with a tiny pinch each of salt and pepper.

• ¾ oz Earl Grey–infused Pineau des Charentes • ½ oz pineapple rosemary shrub • ½ oz freshly squeezed lemon juice • 2 dashes orange bitters • 2 oz IPA beer • 1 pineapple slice, as garnish • 1 rosemary sprig, as garnish Soak 1 Earl Grey teabag in half a bottle of Pineau des Charentes for 1½ hours. To a cocktail shaker half-filled with medium ice cubes, add the rye, Pineau des Charentes, shrub, lemon juice, and bitters. Cover and shake. Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass and top with the beer; garnish with the pineapple and rosemary.

COOL REVIVAL •4 (¹∕8-inch) slices unpeeled English cucumber • 2 oz rye • ½ oz Cynar or other herbaceous amaro • ½ oz yuzu juice, freshly squeezed or bottled* • ½ oz herbal lemon syrup • Dill and lemon Meringue • 1 pinch grated lemon zest, as garnish • 1 sprig fresh dill sprig, as garnish * Lime juice can be substituted for yuzu juice. In a sturdy, thick-bottomed pint glass from a Boston shaker, use a bar muddler to crush the cucumber slices until most of the juice has been extracted and you have a fragrant, pulpy mush. Add the rye, Cynar, yuzu juice, and herbal lemon syrup, swirling to combine. Fill the metal part of the Boston shaker ²⁄³ full of ice. Pour the muddled rye mixture (including pulp) over the ice cubes, then cap the shaker with the pint glass. Shake vigorously until well chilled. Using a Hawthorn strainer, double-strain the cocktail through a wire-mesh sieve into an ice-filled mini-Mason jar or old-fashioned glass. Heap some of the dill and lemon meringue on top. On the rocks: In a sturdy, thickbottomed pint glass from a Boston shaker, use a bar muddler to crush the avocado, pineapple, cilantro leaves, and ginger into a fragrant, pulpy mush.
