Message It is a matter of great happiness and pride that India has been invited as the Guest of Honour Country at the 46th edition of the Cervantino International Festival to be held in Guanajuato in October 2018. It is indeed a recognition of India’s rich cultural legacy and its contributions to the world, throughout its long history. I would like to convey my deep appreciation to the Ministry of Culture, the Government of the State of Guanajuato and Director General of Cervantino International Festival from whom we have received invaluable support during the past months in preparing India’s special participation. From Indian side, the participation is being executed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the cultural arm of the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India. Both India and Mexico are millennium civilisations. The Cervantino International Festival offers a unique opportunity for a dialogue between two ancient cultures and their value systems. Our endeavour has been to showcase India’s diverse, rich and colourful cultural panorama through its dances, music, theatre, puppetry, Yoga, cuisine and Bollywood. With a dozen and a half performing groups and exhibitions participating and touring 30 cities, with approximately 100 events, we hope to present a Festival of India spread over three weeks. This will be a Festival of India, a country which is not only a millennium civilisation but also the largest democracy of the world and the fastest growing emerging economy. This will be a Festival of India, which throughout its history, has promoted the notion of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family). At the Cervantino International Festival, we will be celebrating unity in diversity and how it should shape ‘The Future is Today’ - the theme of the Festival this year. Over the last 45 years, the Cervantino International Festival has emerged as a forum to connect; to build relations across cultures; and heal the ruptures created by tumultuous world politics. I hope that India’s participation as a Guest of Honour Country will make relations between our two countries stronger and friendship between our peoples closer.

A passage to Bollywood
The Danceworx’s Navdhara, India Dance Theatre, is inspired by Bollywood stories and choreographed by Ashley Lobo, one of the most famous contemporary choreographers from India. Ashley Lobo introduced Western techniques to India, developing his own method called Prana Paint and using a unique awareness approach that explores movements through breathing, Yoga and physical contact. He is the founder of The Danceworx, through which he promotes, since its creation in 1998, the dance in India, through scholarships, workshops, exchanges and presentations. Ashley Lobo has managed to position himself as an international artiste. He participated in the production, The Ballet Chemnitz in Germany, in November of 2017. He received recognition for his contribution to the art of dancing at the 2016 Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and he has highlighted his work in choreographies of more than 30 films. His international tours have included countries such as Taiwan, Canada, South Africa, Germany, Turkey, the United States of America, Bahrain and Israel.

Malavika Sarukkai
Building metaphor of the fabric from the dance Thari-the Loom is the choreographic concept of dance created by the artiste Malavika Sarukkai, inspired by the loom, the design and the play of the thread. The work of the dancer explores the interaction of the constant and the variable; the eternal and the changing; the warp and the plot. The staging of Sarukkai explores the artistic relationship between the dancer and the weaver, giving rise to a dynamic web in which both elements come together in a harmonic sense. Malavika Sarukkai has received several awards including the Padma Shri from the President of India in 2003 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2002. The National Center for the Performing Arts celebrated the composition of the choreographer for ten days in the city of Mumbai.

Rendition of classical dance, Manipuri
Manipuri Jagoi Marup is the leading company for development of Manipuri, an Indian classical dance. It was founded in 1963 by Guru Padmashree Amubi Singh. The company - made up of artistes with extensive experience in stages around the world - has gained great international recognition for its representations of classical, ethnic and traditional dance of Manipur, a northeastern state of India. Manipuri Jagoi Marup, directed by Ningombam Rina Devi, promotes the Manipuri dance, which, together with the Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi and Odissi, make up the six classical dances of the country. For the past 35 years, Ningombam Rina Devi has been working as a senior artiste of Manipuri Jagoi Marup and has participated in various programs both within India and abroad. Manipuri Dance, related to rituals and popular traditions, is a representation of the ethnic culture of Manipur. Its main themes are linked to the life of Krishna, a Hindu mythological God revered throughout India.

Indian music personified
Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is one of the most brilliant promoters of the Etawah Gharana, a musical lineage from the eastern part of India which has been preserved for seven generations. Originally from Bombay, he learned vocal music and played tabla before formally studying the sitar. He is, in the words of the Indian media, “Indian music personified.” He has had an outstanding international career and received prestigious awards such as the Padma Shri of the Government of India and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He has performed at major festivals in India, the United States, Europe, Russia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and Australia, and taught at workshops in Mumbai and Calcutta, India; New York, United States, and Toronto, Canada. Of Ustad Shahid Parvez, the critic Juan Arturo Brennan warns: “It is said that he is the most resplendent jewel of the Etawah Gharana music school”. One of the special characteristics of his art is that he is one of the few artistes to dominate vocal music and the Tantrakari Baaj school, a style of playing the sitar in which the percussion elements acquire a singular importance.

Ozone Raaga Ozone Raaga is a band that fuses Indian classical music with the European sound tradition. Since 2006, when it was founded on the initiative of Azeem and Hafeez Ahmed Alvi, the group has become one of the most respected in India and has gained a huge experience in forums and festivals in India and abroad. A range of musical styles, harmonic variations and rhythmic textures taken from different cultural regions of India constitute the sound of the band. Ozone Raaga , inspired by Shakti, the popular fusion band that combined elements of the Indian song with jazz and became a pioneer of world music , explains one of the objectives in the musical field: “In our own way, we try to dissolve in the world we perceive and discover the music that resonates around us. Many great musicians talk about the search for that incredible moment during the performance when one becomes music and forgets its own identity”. Hafeez Ahmed Alvi, director of the group, is one of the leading sitarists in the world and a prominent figure in the field of contemporary jazz, with influences from performers such as the famous Shahid Parvez Khan and Ustad Sayyed Ahmed Alvi. In 2012, he created the Raag Mantra Music Foundation, and recently finished his fifteenth European tour with Harry Stojka, with whom he performed at the Vienna Jazz Festival.

Celebration of Sufi and contemporary mystic poetry 14
Rashmi Agarwal is a renowned singer and songwriter based in New Delhi, who has devoted herself to interpreting traditional Sufi poetry, ghazal and bhakti. Her art combines a very smooth and meaningful interaction between her lucid voice of crystalline spring and the deep spiritual emotion from which the music emerges to accompany the songs of faith and devotion. She is a member of the Council of Cultural Relations of India. She has structured and conceptualized a variety of thematics. One of her major projects is Indian Music Concepts in Contemporary Synthesis Production, in which she collaborated with Kai Turnbull, professor at the Berklee College of Music in the United States. The Indian singer has received several awards such as the Grand-Prix at the IX Sharq Taronalari International Music Festival, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and the Smabhavna Sammaan, in New Delhi, for her contribution to music. She has had several collaborations in television and radio channels in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

Lok Rang, traditional songs that talk about life One of the representatives of the cultural richness in classical and traditional art of Rajasthan, India, is Samandar Khan, popular and versatile interpreter of the Sufi, a spiritual and mystical musical rendition popular not only in India but across South Asia and other parts of the world. Samandar Khan belongs to the Manganiar community, the musical collective of Rajasthan, who are poetic people and are considered exceptional performers who have their tradition linked to classical folk music. Khan’s repertoire has contributed greatly to the music of the desert in melody, rhythm, highly evolved poetic content and quality of the compositions, as their themes are chosen from everyday situations in which they celebrate life. He has mastered an extensive repertoire of traditional rhythms that he interprets with great vigor and sensitivity. He has performed alongside two popular vocalists of the subcontinent, Abida Parveen, of Pakistan, and Shubha Mudgal, of India. He has worked with flamenco dancers led by Ms. Zacky from Spain; the jazz group led by Mr. Hanks of the Netherlands and Tanttz of Berlin, Germany.

Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan Dessert Pulse

The Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan is a group of popular and internationally known percussionists from the Manganiars, an artistic tribe from the Western state of Rajasthan in India. Dhol Drummers is a collective of master percussionists who specialize in the dhol or large double-sided drum, usually performed by two people. The group combines the sound of multiple dhols with the sounds of other traditional percussion instruments such as dholak, khartal, bhapang and morchang (also known as the biter or harp of the Jews) to create a vibrant and exuberant repertoire, full of traditional and contemporary compositions. The group, led by Chanan and Swaroop Khan, was conceived by Divya Bhatia, director of the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF). The Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan has played several times at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, at Celtic Connections in Scotland and at Festival Interceltique in Lorient, France. It has the unique distinction of being invited to perform at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, in Scotland, United Kingdom, as well as at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia this year.

A Laboratory for Theatre Research The company, Adishakti was founded by choreographer Veenapani Chawla in 1981 in Mumbai, and has since become an internationally recognized institution for integrating traditional and contemporary Indian culture, where artistes and experts from different specialities participate in programs, workshops and theatrical presentations. Chawla has directed most of the productions of this group, showing a commitment to continuous creativity and establishing a performance methodology based on the old knowledge, related to the ability to express themselves through the body, voice and psychology of the actor. Composed of seven episodes, Adishakti, whose verbal expression is supported by gestures, Koodiyattam music and popular rhythms from different regions of South Asia, exposes the cycle of creation, celebration, destruction and return.

Meher The Troupe Life as long as a dream

Meher The Troupe is made up of a diverse group of performers, bound by a deep love for puppets. It engages in theatrical performance with puppets of various types (shadow theatre, hand puppets, twoleg puppets and three dimensional puppets etc.). The company is directed by Mansinh Zala, and was integrated as a way to pay tribute to the memory of Meher Contractor (1918-1992): artiste, puppeteer, director and Indian teacher and an essential figure in the art of the puppetry in India, known both for his work of creation and for his contribution to the puppet’s development in education. It is due to him that the art attained international acclaim. The director, Mansinh Zala placed India on the international platform as an exponent of this art that involves dolls. The members of Meher The Troupe, focus on promoting social welfare, education, development and communication. The group has gone on to say that they enjoy working with creative minds from different fields and beliefs, because they feel “that is the only way in which a puppeteer can reach his greatest potential”. They have performed at festivals such as Putul Yatra, India; World Performing Arts, United States; in Lahore, Pakistan and in National Book Fair, United States. Meher The Troupe transmits the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, thinker, mystic and religious leader of India, with the play Life as long as a dream, whose main characters are dolls.

The Quixote in Kathakali A fusion of Indian and Spanish cultures
Margi is one of the most important institutions of performing arts in India. It was established in 1969 as a school of Kathakali and Kutiyattam, a Sanskrit drama, and as a professional company of both the styles. It has toured in Sweden, Japan, Germany, France, Sri Lanka and Spain. In 2002, it was selected by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to carry out the most extensive Kathakali tour that has ever been done throughout Europe. It is also a research center in which actors, famous writers, literary critics and erudite professors from different areas collaborate. Cervantes’ novel is represented by the dance, Kathakali, considered one of the richest and most mysterious classical dramaturgical traditions in the world. As Don Quixote fights windmills that he imagines are giants in his imaginary battles, Kathakali dancers twirl on stage in their traditional costumes to give the quixotic Spanish character the extra colourful edge.

Phillips-Rodriguez holds a BA Hons in Hispanic Literature from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, an MLitt on Sanskrit Studies from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in Sanskrit from the University of Cambridge. She was granted the D. K. Award to the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation on Sanskrit 2009-2012 by the International Association of Sanskrit Studies (IASS). Currently, she is a full time researcher at the Institute of Philological Research of UNAM and a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature. In 2014 she received the National University Award for Young Scholars (RDUNJA) on account of her efforts to bring Indian culture closer to Mexican students. One of her main research interests is the migration of fables from India to other cultures, particularly to the Spanish-speaking world.

In 1975 he traveled to India to pursue PhD studies at the Hindu University of Benares and in 1976 he earned the Doctorate at the National University of Australia (Ph.D. 1980). In 1980 he joined the Center for Asian and African Studies (CEAA) at El Colegio de México as Professor-Researcher. In the CEAA, he teaches courses in and conducts seminars on History, Culture, Literature, Religions and Mythology of India.

* Diti Kirit Vora grew up in Mumbai and pursued Commerce for her graduation. She had her first encounter with Yoga a decade ago. She has been practicing Yoga regularly since 2010 and became a professional Yoga Trainer in 2015. Since then, she has trained corporates, students and kids. Diti is a Yoga Trainer at Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre, Mexico City. She specializes in pre natal and post natal Yoga. Diti has been invited by many reputed organizations in India to demonstrate and teach the practice of Yoga. She was selected in 2017 to represent India in Sri Lanka for the Third World Yoga Day in 2017.

A DIalogue between India and Mexico Indian and Mexican civilizations show similarities as well as large differences with each other and this intriguing comparison of the two civilizations, reflected in the scenic proposal inspired by Glimpses of India by Mexican writer Octavio Paz, is part of the XLVI Edition of the Cervantino International Festival.

Created by José Luis Cruz, it is a fusion of dance, music and painting, laying down dialogues between Mexico and India tempered with the prose of the 1990 Nobel Prize winner for literature and described in the sacred books of the Popol Vuh and the Mahabharata . Actors, poets, dancers, musicians and visual artistes evoke these colloquia formed with the support of elements of sound, movement, colour and volume, in a space that occupies the four elements: water, fire, earth and air. José Luis Cruz has origins in Tapachula, Chiapas and he studied at the National School of theatre of the INBA and the UNAM. As a dramatist, he wrote and directed his own texts. His plays are adapted from the Accidental Death of an Anarchist, by the 1997 Nobel Prize winner for literature, Dario Fo and the Baal, by Bertold Brecht. In 2004, the International Institute of UNESCO and the Mexican Center of Theatre (ITI) gave him My Life in theatre Medal, in recognition of his illustrious career. He founded and directed seven editions of the International Jazz Festival-Ollin.

Indian Culture generates tremendous curiosity and interest in Mexico and so does the history of the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations of Mexico among Indians. The diversity of Indian culture is a matter of great interest for not only scholars and academicians but also the general Mexicans who want to know the rich traditions of Indian cultural heritage. There is mutual appreciation and admiration in India and Mexico for cuisines, festivals, arts and the diversity associated with each of them. It is the environment of freedom of outlook and perspectives and an independent cultural space that the two civilizations have historically had that has facilitated them to prosper culturally in their respective geographies. In order to institutionalize the strong mutual curiosity and to have frequent cultural exchanges, the idea of having a dedicated cultural center under the aegis of Embassy of India was conceptualized. Consequently, Indian Cultural Centre dedicated to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, who is considered one of the greatest ambassadors of Indian culture was established. It was rechristened as Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre (GTICC). It has become the institutional pillar for disseminating knowledge about Indian culture not only in Mexico City but in many parts of this region including Central and Latin America. Training and classes on various aspects of Indian culture namely, Classical Dance – Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Mohiniyattam, Odissi, Music – Sitar, a renowned stringed instrument Tabla, a popular percussion instrument are organized in the premises of this institution. Yoga is gaining popularity with every passing day. There is a dedicated programme for training in the practice of Yoga. Hindi Film, popularly called Bollywood, has a huge following in Mexico and the Cultural Center has dedicated training classes on Bollywood Dance. Quite remarkably, the Mexicans have shown interest in participating in the activities of the Cultural Centre and have inducted themselves in various programmes run by the Centre. Linguistics also forms an important part of the training courses here. Hindi and Sanskrit classes are also conducted in the Centre with an objective to satiate curiosity of those who want to become conversant with these languages as well as to those who want to take a dip into this huge ocean of linguistic heritage of India. The Cultural Centre comprises of a library and a reading room for those who want to browse literary works or fulfill their literary aspirations. The library has over 5000 volumes in various languages, including, English and Hindi. The Cultural Centre provides a platform to nationals of both Mexico and India who want to showcase their talent in Indian Arts and Performances by giving them opportunity to participate in shows and programmes organized by the Centre as well as in those organized in collaboration with other institutions. The GTICC has become an icon of India-Mexico Cultural relations and a leader in facilitating cultural exchanges between the two countries. It is located at Anatole France 319, Colonia Polanco, Mexico City which just a stone’s throw from the Embassy of India, Mexico City.
