In the moving lanes of Guanajuato, I witnessed amongst Mexican audience a great fondness and affinity for India´s cultural manifestations. With 122 events, spread over 32 cities, besides Guanajuato, this was the biggest cultural outreach of India in Mexico or for that matter, in any country in the Latam region. Apart from a variety of performing arts such as classical, folk and contemporary dances; classical, folk, devotional and fusion music; theatre and puppetry, India´s participation also consisted of a food festival, film shows, Yoga demonstrations, exhibitions (textiles, dolls and photographs), workshops and a series of academic conferences. In order to promote Brand India, a ´House of India´ was set up with the help of Indian business establishments. El Financiero, the leading Mexican daily, brought out a Special Supplement on the occasion. As a tribute to the people of Guanajuato, a World Heritage City, we have decided to donate a bust of Mahatma Gandhi to the Municipality of Guanajuato. This will be installed in early 2019 in commemoration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. India’s cultural and literary presence in Mexico would be further reinforced in 2019 through the International Book Fair Guadalajara, where India has been invited to participate as the ‘Guest of Honour’ country. I was privileged to receive the baton from the Prime Minister of Portugal in early December. In this connection, the National Book Trust of India (NBT) and Feria Internacional de Libro Guadalajara had signed a MoU in July 2018. The year was also characterized by growing trade and investment links between India and Mexico. The two-way trade is likely to touch USD 10 bn mark for the first time. In the first ten

spectacular display of India´s cultural heritage at the 46th Cervantino International Festival was the hallmark of the year 2018. India participated as the ´Guest of Honour´ Country at the Festival in Guanajuato from 10-28 October 2018. The Cervantino Festival is the biggest and most prestigious cultural event in the Latin American region. Though India has been participating regularly in this Festival since 1979, this was the first time that it made its mark as the theme country.

months of the year, the bilateral trade had reached the level of USD 8.3 bn (the level which was reached during the year 2017). India climbed up two positions to become Mexico´s 8th biggest trade partner. During my own tenure, India´s rank has risen from 13th to 8th. This has been very encouraging considering that ten years back, in 2008, the bilateral trade amounted to USD 2.9 bn and India did not figure even amongst the top 20 global trade partners of Mexico. In 2018, Mexico emerged as the biggest trade partner of India in Latin America and the Caribbean region. In early 2018, several high level Government functionaries from Mexico such as Commissioner of COFEPRIS, CEO of ProMexico, Under Secretary of Foreign Trade, Under Secretary of Hydrocarbons and Secretary of Economic Development of the state of Durango visited India. The Mission facilitated visits by several large business delegations from Trade Promotion Council of India (40 companies in F&B sector and 45 companies in construction sector), National Jute Board, Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council, Confederation of Indian Industries (35 companies in construction sector) and Council for Leather Exports (9 companies). The Embassy in collaboration with PwC Mexico brought out a publication Doing Business in Mexico: A Guide for Indian Investors to facilitate business engagement. In April, Parle, a world leader in biscuits and confectionary, setup its first manufacturing plant in western hemisphere in Mexico and Tech Mahindra opened its second office in the state of Aguascalientes. It was a year of political transition in Mexico. Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in his congratulatory message to newly elected President fondly recalled his visit to Mexico in June 2016 and reiterated his support to advance India-Mexico ‘Privileged Partnership’ to the next level. India-Mexico Cooperation in Defence Training A 16-member delegation from National Defence College New Delhi, led by Rear Admiral DM Sudan, visited Mexico on a study tour from 21- 26 May, 2018. They met Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi; Dr. Luis Rubio F., President of Mexican Council of Foreign Affairs (COMEXI); Gral. Bgda. D.E.M. Ambassador of India met the elected Head of the Government of Mexico City

Oportunidades de negocios en el Estado de México

The elected head of government, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that between India and Mexico City there will be close collaboration on issues of mobility, environmental care and culture. After meeting with the Ambassador of India, Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi, she said that the Government of Mexico City is very interested in the relationship with that nation, as it has experience in developing and changing vehicles from gasoline to hybrids. In a press conference at the transition house, and in the company of the Ambassador, she expressed her government's interest in collaborating also with the various Indian companies that have developed these projects. In addition to the river clean-up program they have initiated in India, "we are interested in knowing what technologies they are using for it," she said. On the cultural issue, she mentioned "they already develop different activities in Mexico City with the current government and we are going to give continuity, so we have invited them to the festivals to be held in the capital. Ambassador Pardeshi announced that India will participate in fairs, film festivals, theatre and dance. The next Secretaries of Mobility, Environment and Culture of the city, Andrés Lajous, Marina Robles and José Alfonso Suárez del Real, as well as representatives of the Indian Embassy in Mexico, participated in the private meeting as well. India strenghtens ties with Campeche

El Embajador Muktesh Pardeshi se reunió con una delegación del Estado de México el 25 de septiembre en la Embajada. La delegación incluyó a Arq. Ariel Rodríguez Polo, Presidente de Canacintra en el Estado de México; el Lic. Alexandro Argudín Le Roy, Director General y Administrador del Aeropuerto Internacional de Toluca; y el Lic. Rodrigo Jiménez Sólomon, Subsecretario de Desarrollo Industrial del Gobierno del Estado de México. Durante la reunión discutieron acerca de las oportunidades económicas para empresas y empresarios de origen indio en el Estado de México.

Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi along with Director(GTICC) discussed different areas of collaboration with the newly elected Mayor of the City of Guanajuato. Muktesh Pardeshi, embajador de la India en México, se reunió en la Presidencia Municipal con el alcalde Alejandro Navarro.

Alejandro Navarro Saldaña, alcalde de Guanajuato capital, y Muktesh Pardeshi, embajador de la India en México, se reunieron en Presidencia Municipal en donde acordaron trabajar en un programa de hermanamiento y apoyo en educación y tecnología. A la salida del encuentro, Navarro Saldaña sostuvo que el embajador le expresó la intención de apoyar a Guanajuato capital con becas para burócratas y para los policías para que puedan ir a la India a capacitarse. Aunque no detalló sobre cuántas becas son las que se darían, el alcalde sostuvo que se centrarán en seguridad, educación, administración municipal y tecnologías de la información. Navarro Saldaña comentó que lo que aprendan los policías y burócratas que se vayan a la India, lo replicarán a su regreso al municipio. Además, reiteró que la India donará un busto de Mahatma Gandhi a Guanajuato capital, por lo que en coordinación con el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) revisarán en qué zona del municipio lo instalarán, el cual pretenden inaugurar en enero del próximo año.

Strenghtening ties with Aguascalientes Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi met Honorable Governor of Aguascalientes Sr. Martin Orozco on 21 June 2018 and discussed economic, technical, educational and cultural cooperation between India and the State of Aguascalientes. Ambassador visited the assembly plant of Mahindra Tractors in Aguascalientes, Mexico on 21 June 2018. It started its Mexico operations in July 2017. Mahindra Tractors is the leading producer of farm tractors in the world.

Yucatán e India buscan consolidar una alianza estratégica Yucatán y la República de la India comenzaron un proceso de acercamiento para explorar oportunidades de intercambio económico, tecnológico, comercial y educativo, así como estrechar lazos culturales. El gobernador Rolando Zapata Bello sostuvo un encuentro con una comitiva del país asiático, integrada por el embajador de la India en México, Muktesh K. Pardeshi; la directora General del Consejo Indio para las Relaciones Culturales (ICCR, por sus siglas en inglés), Riva Ganguly Das, y el director del Centro Cultural de la India en México, Mohd R. Qureshi. El mandatario subrayó que tanto la maya como la Hindú son culturas vivas, originarias, con filosofía ancestral, por lo que expresó beneplácito y disposición para una conexión que fortalezca los lazos con el Festival Internacional de la Cultura Maya (Ficmaya) y el Día Internacional del Yoga, que se celebra cada 21 de junio por disposición de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU). “Este acercamiento va abriendo cauces a nuevos intercambios y el Festival Internacional de la Cultura Maya nos va a permitir impulsar y detonar muy fuerte esta relación”, expuso. También, se le proporcionará información para que conozcan el paquete de incentivos especiales que existirán para establecerse en la Zona Económica Especial (ZEE), además de que el estado cuenta con instituciones especializadas en la

formación de capital humano en el área de tecnología. Por su parte, Muktesh K. Pardeshi ofreció becas en diversas disciplinas para estadías de dos o tres meses, tema que se concretará a través de la Secretaría de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior (Siies). En su intervención, Riva Ganguly Das indicó que el yoga, aportación de la cultura india al mundo, es una práctica física, mental y espiritual de tradición antigua, que se originó en dicha nación y lo que buscan es concientizar a la población de los beneficios de esta disciplina, con enfoque en la salud y el bienestar para un estilo de vida en armonía con la naturaleza. El año pasado participaron siete estados con la India para el Día Internacional de Yoga y en este 2018 Yucatán estará incluido por primera vez en los festejos, lo que será el inicio de otras colaboraciones como el Festival Internacional de la Cultura Maya, que para este año será la India el país invitado y Aguascalientes es estado invitado. The growth story of India-Mexico bilateral commercial and economic relations continued in the year 2018. Besides hosting trade missions from 7 export promotion councils of India in different trade fairs, the Embassy organised several events in order to promote engagement of business community from both sides. The bilateral trade between India and Mexico reached the level of 8.3 billion USD in the first 10 months of 2018, which is the same level reached in the year of 2017. In Jan-Oct, 2018 period India exported goods worth 4.66 billion USD and imported good worth 3.846 billion USD. If the growth rate continues, India would achieve the target of bilateral trade of 10 billion USD this year. About 10 years back in 2008, the trade was only 2.9billion USD and India did not even figure amongst the top 20 trading partners of Mexico. In 2018, India rose two positions to become Mexicoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 8th biggest trade partner.

TRADE MISSIONS

The year saw increased focus on products which have good potential for exports from India like Jute and other textiles, tiles, and leather. In textiles sector, over 30 companies participated in InterModa (January 2018 edition) at Guadalajara. The officials of National Jute Board and the Chairman, Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council interacted with national chambers of textiles (CANAINTEX) and apparels (CANAIVE) of Mexico and other businessmen to invite them to the biggest trade fairs of India in this sector, on different occasions. 40 Indian companies participated in EXPO ANTAD & Alimentaria MĂŠxico 2018, Guadalajara from 6 - 8 March, 2018 under the banner of Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI). The Indian companies also had successful B2B meetings at Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce.

Ceramic products of India have also found an attractive market in Mexico and the exports are continuously rising. This year, Trade Promotion Council of India and Morbi Ceramics Association participated in Expo CIHAC with a delegation of 45 companies. In Expo Ferreterra 2018, 35 companies participated under the banner of CII in which few were from the ceramics industry. India is also trying to explore the Mexican market for export of leather goods. The Council for Leather Exports organised a Buyer-Seller Meet in Leon with 10 companies in November. A hi-level delegation from WAPCOS also paid a visit to Mexico to explore business opportunities.

INVESTMENTS

In terms of investments, 2018 saw continued growth. Parle opened its first manufacturing plant of western hemisphere in Mexico. The plant was inaugurated by the Ambassador of India and Arup Chauhan, Executive Director on 30 April, 2018.

Indian IT industry continued expansion as well. Tech Mahindra opened its second office in the state of Aguascalientes in Bajio region. Indian investments in Mexico grew despite it being the election year. 2018 also witnessed inauguration of a new Indian fine dining restaurant “Royal India” in Mexico City in December 2018.

To facilitate the investments, the Embassy along with PWC Mexico brought out a publication – “Doing Business in Mexico: A Guide for Indian Investors” which is a comprehensive assessment of Mexican investment climate (Available online at Embassy’s website). The publication was launched both in Mexico City and New Delhi.

DELEGATIONS

India is also increasingly been seen as an attractive investment destination. The year began with Ms. Ana Paulina Gonzalez, Secretary of Economic Development of the state of Durango visiting Delhi and Mumbai meeting with Indian companies. Mr. Paulo Carreno King, CEO of ProMexico visited Delhi in February, attended conferences and met several companies.

Mr. Juan Carlos Baker, Secretary of Foreign Trade of the Government of Mexico attended the WTO Informal Ministers’ Meeting hosted by Government of India in New Delhi in March. Later, Dr. Aldo Flores Quiroga, Secretary from the Ministry of Energy visited New Delhi to attend the 16th International Energy Forum.

BUSINESS EVENTS

The Embassy organised an exclusive event in April 2018 for the pharmaceutical companies in which Federal Commissioner of COFEPRIS was invited along with the Presidents of biggest chambers – CANIFARMA and ANAFAM. ference organised by CANACINTRA in Toluca, State of Mexico and in Mexico Business Forum in Mexico City. He also met the President of COPARMEX and discussed the success of Aadhaar system in India. To promote the brand India, interactions took place at the highest level with the Association of Ministers of Economic Development (AMSDE), State Governments of Mexico City, State of Mexico, Campeche, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Yuacatan etc.. In fact, Mahindra Group and Tata

Motors have shown interest in the Mexico City Government’s plan to revamp its public transportation fleet by incorporating electrical mobility solutions. 8th CII India-LAC Conclave which took place in Santiago, Chile on 1-2 October, 2018 was also promoted through various channels.

The Ambassador and Embassy officials paid a visit to Research Centre for Maize and Wheat (CIMMYT) in January. The Ambassador also visited the tractors facility of New Holland which is importing 100% made in India tractors and Mahindra tractors. In the coming year, the high level interactions have already been planned. Ms. Rocio Nahle, Minister of Energy has accepted the invitation of Government of India to visit New Delhi and attend Petrotech 2019. Indiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participation in International Book Fair, Guadalajara 2019 will present an unprecedented opportunity for publishing and book printing enterprises of India. India has had regular participation at InterModa, and once again, in January 2019, 30 companies are set to come to Guadalajara under the banner of Federation of Indian Exporters Organisation. For the first time, India would be participating in the Aerospace Fair FAMEX-2019. The Embassy is also in discussion with India Trade Promotion Organisation to organise a multi-products Expo in the last quarter of FY 2019-20. NASSCOM, CLE and FICCI are also expected to organise trade missions to Mexico in the coming year. With greater business interactions between the two countries, the two-way trade and investment is poised to reach greater heights. India-Mexico : The year Cultural bond rose to its peak Year 2018 was a landmark and extremely eventful year for Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre (GTICC) during which numerous activities in the fields of Culture, Community Affairs and outreach were organised, as have never been seen in past, since inception in 2010. The Cultural Centre undertook many outreach activities, by participating in several national and state level festivals like Feria de las Culturas Amigas in Mexico City, International Day of Dance at UNAM, ‘Day in India’ at Centro Gallego in Colonia Roma Norte, ExpoSer exhibition on health and wellness in Mexico City, a ‘Week of India’ at the Metropolitan Autonomous University of Caujimalpa and Baja California International Film Festival. The students and teachers of GTICC organized colourful performances for the Annual Day of GTICC, ITEC Day and at the closing ceremony of the photographic exhibition of Sh. Raghu Rai at the Musuem of Photography in Mexico City. Indian food festival was organized in Hotel Presidente Intercontinental during October to promote the Culinary culture of India. During the year, we received many visiting artists and performers from India like Arupa Lahiry (Bharatanatyam); Sonali Skandan and Bala Skandan (Bharatanatyam dance and Carnatic music); Kinnari Vora (Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance); Ustad Murli Manohar (Tabla); Sujata Mohapatra (Odissi) and Yamini Saripalli (Kuchipudi). The Culture Centre also provided support to Indian Association of Mexico and celebrated festivals like Holi, Diwali, Basant Panchmi, Baisakhi and Gurupurnima. Community based programmes like Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, Tourism Seminar etc. were also organized. Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday - Bapu@150 was commemorated with the release of postage stamps and a Lecture on the life of Mahatma by an eminent Gandhian, Ms. Radha Bhatt. The International Day of Yoga was celebrated on a grand scale this year at 11 locations around Mexico. Several programmes were organized for promoting Yoga at the Cultural Centre, Embassy and College of Mexico. It was also celebrated in 8 cities of Belize. The highlight of this year’s activities of GTICC was the

participation of India as the Guest of Honor country at the 46th Cervantino International Festival at Guanajuato. 11 performing groups consisting of 125 Indian artists and performers presented 122 events/performances showcasing a spectrum of Indian Music, Dance, Drama, Theatre and Puppetry in 32 cities and towns in Mexico. India’s participation at the Cervantino Festival has acted as a catalyst in boosting India-Mexico cultural relations and promotion of Indian Culture in Latin America. As part of the Cervantino International Festival, five Indian exhibitions were on display in Guanajuato showcasing the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India. Apart from regular classes which are being conducted at GTICC in Yoga, Indian dances, musical instruments, languages and Cooking; workshops on various disciplines like Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Mohiyattam and Bollywood were also held. An India studies seminar in UNAM; a key note speech on the theme of “The Idea of India” by Prof. Sunil Khilnani of King’s College London were conducted to promote academic exchanges between India and Mexico. During the year several Mexican and Belize nationals were sent to India under ITEC programmes. A special “Week on India” was organized by the Capital 21 TV channel that showcased not only India´s Arts, but also Indian Cuisine and special lecture series on Gandhiji and India´s cultural heritage. Thari - The Loom is a dance choreographed by Malavika Sarukkai which is inspired by the loom of sari woven in India. The staging of Sarukkai Group explored the artistic relationship between the dancer and the weaver, giving rise to a dynamic web in which both elements come together in a harmonic sense. The Adishakti

Meher the Troupe

The company Adishakti is an internationally recognized institution for integrating traditional and contemporary Indian culture. As a Laboratory for Theatre Research, it presented a ritualistic theatre based on music, expressions and cycle of life and death in this edition of Cervantino International Festival.

Meher the Troupe is made up of a diverse group of performers, bound by a deep love for puppets. It engaged in a theatrical performance with puppets of various sizes and colours. The play was based on the teachings and life of Swami Vivekananda, the thinker, mystic and religious leader of India.

A fusion of Indian and Spanish cultures

Margi Kathakali Company presented the Quixote in Kathakali as a fusion of Indian and Spanish cultures in Cervantino International Festival. Margi is one of the most important institutions of performing arts, which was established in 1969 as a school of Kathakali. This was a play based on Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s novel Don Quijote. The artists beautifully portrayed the characters of the novel as Kathakali dancers in their colorful costumes.

Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan Desert Pulse

This is a group of popular and internationally known percussionists from an artistic tribe from the western state of Rajasthan in India. The group combines the sound of multiple dhols with the sounds of other traditional percussion instruments. Indian cultural groups concluded their performance at Cervantino with presentation of Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan in the presence of a huge audience of about 10,000 persons. It was a resounding success and a befitting farewell to Cervantino International Festival. The Dhol Drummers performed at a Reception at India House, Mexico City, to mark the successful closing of Cervantino Festival. Ms Marcela Díez Martínez, DG Cervantino graced the occasion with her presence. Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi felicitated the performers and concluded the successful edition of Cervantino International Festival.

Academic conferences

Three academic conferences were organized in Cervantino International Festival in the University of Guanajuato. The first was by Dr. Wendy Phillips, Professor at UNAM, on classical art in India. The second conference was by Dr. Benjamin Preciado, Professor at COLMEX on the culture of India. The third was by Dr. Adrián Muñoz, Professor at COLMEX. Prof. Adrián Muñoz is an Indologist and holds a Ph.D. in South Asian studies.

Yoga

Workshops on Yoga were conducted by Ms. Diti Vora, Yoga instructor of GTICC in “Los Pastitos” in Guanajuato as a part of celebrations of Cervantino.

Exhibitions

A photographic exhibition "Sacred India and Archiva" by well-known Indian photographer Amit Pasricha was on display in Museo Casa del Conde Rul in Guanajuato. Another exhibition showcasing Indian traditional costumes of different states and classical dances was also exhibited in the museum during Cervantino Festival.

Artes Visuales

Many Indian photo exhibitions were on display in Guanajuato on the occasion of Cervantino International Festival. "The Home and the World" by Norma Patiño, who has captured images of various aspects of Indian life. This was a fascinating visual work which has captured India through the lens. This exhibition was on display in the Galeria el Atrio of the University of Guanajuato. Another exhibition "The spell of India" by Yolanda Andrade presents images of several cultural cities of India, when she travelled to India in 2006 and 2010. This exhibition is displayed in Museo de la Alhondiga de Granaditas and is open up to January 15, 2019.

Weaving the Memory-Textiles of India

Indian textiles are recognized globally and have greatly influenced the dressing sense of the world. An exhibition of this rich and diverse cultural heritage of India was presented at the University of Guanajuato at Sala de Hermenegildo Bustos.

Mahatma Gandhi Exhibition

An exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi as a part of Cervantino was also inaugurated by Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi in Gene Byron Museum in Guanajuato. The exhibition displayed the life of Mahatma Gandhi in a collection of pictures since his childhood. The exhibition was organized with the support of El Colegio Mahatma Gandhi in Mexico.

Casa de la India

Casa de la India (House of India) was inaugurated by DG ICCR Mrs.Riva Ganguly Das along with DG Cervantino, and Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi in Plaza del Baratillo in Guanajuato on October 10th. Indian textiles, handicrafts and food were on sale here. Casa de la India displayed a microscopic view of India on the streets of Guanajuato. The colours and smell of India was not missed by anyone visiting Guanajuato. Minister of Culture of Mexico Ms. Maria Cristina GarcĂa Cepeda and Ambassador of Mexico to India Ms. Melba Pria also visited the casa. GTICC demonstrations

Teachers of GTICC and other experts of Indian dance and music presented performances in Plaza del Baratillo in front of Casa de la India every evening at 06:00 pm as a part of Cervantino International Festival. 11th October- Sitar concert by Sidartha Siliceo 12th October- Bharatanatyam dance by Patricia Torres 13th October- Kalbelia dance by Claudia Llanos 14th October- Bhangra dance by Aline Shaabi. These performances were followed by question and answer sessions and attracted huge crowd. GTICC Teachers presented lecture demonstrations in Plaza Baratillo and explained about Indian classical dance, music, ayurveda and bollywood dance. The presentations were made by Mariana Flores (Mohiniyattam), Alejandra Holguín (Ayurveda), Pt. Radheshyam Sharma (Tabla) and Kate Asmara (Bollywood). The presentations were made on Kathak by Meenal Sajwan, Odissi by Sak-Nikté Romero, Yoga by Diti Vora, Bhangra by Aline Shaabi and Ghoomar by Claudia Llanos.

India to take the Centre Stage at 33rd Guadalajara International Book Fair, 2019: A high watermark in India-Mexico Cultural Relations As the 33rd edition of the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) 2019 is going to host one of the largest publishing powers in the world, all eyes in the Latin American literary world are set on India, the Guest of Honor at the 33rd edition of Guadalajara International Book Fair which will be held from Nov 30 to Dec 8, 2019. India has the rare distinction of being the first Asian country to be the Guest of Honor in the history of Guadalajara International Book Fair. The India Curtain Raiser event was the highlight of the closing ceremony on Dec 2, 2018 of the 32nd Guadalajara International Book Fair 2018 where Portugal passed the baton to India. India was represented by the National Book Trust, New Delhi that is going to be the Implementation Agency, Embassy of India in Mexico and Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre, Mexico City. The literary community in Mexico is very upbeat about India’s participation as the Guest of Honor Country. Raúl Padilla, President of FIL said at the event, that "India appears on the horizon, its culture is a door in time that evokes the past and projects us into the future... it is a country with a long literary tradition with books as old as The Vedas and authors like Rabindranath Tagore. The fair looks to the Pacific Ocean to celebrate literature and culture and the arts". India’s participation will not only provide a rich and healthy exchange of literary heritage between India and Mexico, but will also provide a platform for promotion of Indian Publishing Industry in this part of the world. While it will entail sharing of best practices in the Publishing Industry, it will also be a forum for new and budding Authors from the two countries to come together and exchange ideas on creative

writing and other literary skills. India’s unprecedented participation at FIL 2019 will remarkably coincide with the celebration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. In view of this, it is a great opportunity to promote the Gandhian philosophy of peace, truthfulness, tolerance and non-violence especially amongst the youth. Therefore, special segments on Gandhi will be introduced in various sections at FIL 2019. Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi on this occasion said "As India's ambassador, it is a great honour to accept the invitation that was extended to my country to be the guest of honour at the 33rd edition of the International Book Fair next year. It is a great coincidence that we assume this great responsibility of Portugal, with which, India has historical connections”. Today India is the sixth largest book publisher in the world and second only to the United States as an English-language publisher. “We live in a knowledge-driven world," he said. Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations visits Mexico

India and Mexico for long have enjoyed very close cultural cooperation in order to further strenghten cultural ties within the two countries. Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations visited Mexico from 19th to 23rd February, 2018. In the first leg of her visit to Mexico in connection with coordination of the arrangement for Cervantino International Festival 2018, Mrs. Riva Ganguly Das, Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, visited Mexico City and had meetings with Minister of Culture of Mexico, Director of the Mexican Agency of Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director General of Cervantino Festival. Bharatanatyam Dance Group performs at Republic Day celebrations

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed every year on 2 October, that is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Numerous events and celebrations were organized around the world this year to commemorate the celebrations of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The celebrations will continue until 2 October 2019 through exhibitions, documentaries and seminars.

The Republic Day of India events in Mexico were spread over three days. The celebration began on 25 th January with a mesmerizing Bharatanatyam performance by the dance group led by Arupa Lahiry at Teatro de la Ciudad, which is celebrating 100 years of its foundation. Bharatanatyam Dance troupe of Ms. Arupa Lahiry performed in Mexico City, Guanajuato, Monterrey and Cancun during Republic Day celebrations.

72nd Independence Day of India

The 72nd Independence Day of India was celebrated in the Embassy with great fanfare in the presence of Embassy officials, community members, friends of India and media. Ambassador Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi delivered the message of the President of India followed by patriotic songs and dances by Bollywood team of GTICC. A video recording of famous bhajan 'Vaishnav Jana te' by distinguished Mexican singer Eugenia Leon was also screened on the occasion.

Celebran la Independencia de la India en UAM Cuajimalpa El 25 de septiembre de 2018, en el marco de la independencia de la India, la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Cuajimalpa rindió homenaje a la cultura y tradiciones de India a través de una semana que inició con una charla del embajador Muktesh Pardeshi a los alumnos del campus respecto a las Nuevas Oportunidades de Relaciones India – México. “Abuelas solares” llevan luz a viviendas de Oaxaca

Norma Guerra Ramos, Rosa Elvia Hernández, María Aidé López y Olga Lilia Pimentel son las cuatro indígenas conocidas como las "abuelas solares" que se capacitaron en la India en materia de energía solar para luego electrificar su población de 149 habitantes, que no cuenta con energía eléctrica tradicional por ser una isla. Su aventura comenzó en 2013, cuando Cachimbo como también se conoce a la Isla de León. fue prácticamente arrasada por el huracán Bárbara. La tragedia fue vista en televisión por el fundador del proyecto Barefoot College (Universidad Pies descalzos), Bunker Roy, famoso activista social hindú que capacita a mujeres de comunidades rurales marginadas en el mundo y las convierte en agentes de cambio. Después de ser seleccionadas personalmente por Bunker Roy, Norma y sus vecinas se fueron a Lithonia, India, en octubre de 2013; luego de seis meses regresaron capacitadas para instalar paneles solares , armar lámparas led de pared y linternas portátiles, a fin de mejorar su calidad de vida. Durante su estancia en la Barefoot College, las cuatro abuelas oaxaqueñas construyeron 120 paquetes solares. Cada uno consta de tres lámparas led de pared, una linterna portátil.

On 9th January, all Indians and people of Indian origin were invited to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in the Embassy. Accordingly, Indian community members met Ambassador and Embassy officials and interacted with them about Government’s programmes, reforms and policy initiatives.

Indian Association of Mexico celebrated a colorful Holi with great fun in “La Marquesa” park in Mexico City. About 500 Indians and Mexicans participated in the daylong celebration. Baisakhi: Heralding New Year

Ratha Yatra in Mexico City Baisakhi was celebrated in the Embassy with fanfare. On this occasion colourful Bhangra dance was presented by Aline Shaabi group. La ciudad se pintó de alegres colores el fin de semana del 26 y 27 de mayo para conmemorar la gran fiesta del hinduismo en México: Ratha Yatra. Esta fiesta se celebra en la Ciudad de México desde hace catorce años, pero es una ceremonia que se remonta 5,000 años en el pasado.

Diwali: The Festival of Lights

India será el país invitado de la FIL Guadalajara 2019 La edición 2019 de la FIL de Guadalajara, que tendrá lugar del 30 de noviembre al 8 de diciembre, tendrá a India como país invitado de honor. El embajador de India en México, Muktesh Pardeshi, afirmó que será un homenaje a la fuerza, al poder cultural y literario del país asiático. Con una gran muestra de su cultura y literatura, India será el país invitado de honor de la edición 33 de la Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL) de Guadalajara, a realizarse del 30 de noviembre al 8 de diciembre de 2019. Raúl Padilla López, presidente de la FIL de Guadalajara, dio a conocer la noticia en conferencia de prensa desde las instalaciones de la Embajada de India en México y en la que estuvieron presentes su embajador Muktesh Pardeshi y Marisol Schulz Manaut, directora general de la FIL Guadalajara, entre otras autoridades. “Para la FIL es motivo de orgullo y celebración que India haya aceptado ser nuestro invitado de honor el próximo año. Estamos seguros que será una ocasión idónea para el encuentro cultural y para que nuestras industrias editoriales tiendan puentes y se enriquezcan”, expresó Padilla López. Romain Rolland, Premio Nobel de Literatura, aseguró que "si hay un lugar sobre la faz de la tierra donde todos los sueños de la humanidad han encontrado un hogar, es la India". Y ese sueño continuará en la FIL Guadalajara. Destacó que la FIL Guadalajara es el festival literario, editorial y librero más importante en el idioma español. Se trata, dijo, de un encuentro anual para más de 20 mil profesionales del libro, provenientes de 47 países, pues cada año recibe a más de 800 escritores de todo el mundo, así como a más de 814 mil visitantes. “La literatura india es rica y diversa, y su industria literaria es

una de las más importantes del mundo, con una producción anual de 120 mil títulos en 24 lenguas y una exportación a 120 países”, subrayó. De modo que, añadió, la posibilidad de fortalecer la relación entre la industria de India y México, entusiasma al comité organizador de la FIL Guadalajara porque será una gran puerta a través de la cual se podrá acceder y compartir recíprocamente la gran riqueza literaria. Recordó que Octavio Paz, además de ser un gran escritor, ejerció una carrera diplomática que lo llevó en dos ocasiones a la India, la segunda como embajador de México. “Él fue un enamorado de la literatura de este país. Siendo un gran observador y estudioso de la identidad mexicana, Paz descubrió que ni los indios ni los mexicanos renegamos de nuestro pasado. Decía que más bien, lo recubrimos y lo repintamos”. Indicó que fue a través de sus letras y sus traducciones que muchos de los mexicanos conocieron las obras de autores imprescindibles como el cuentista Lokenath Bhattacharya, la novelista Ruth Jhabvaka o el poeta Rabindranath Tagore. En su oportunidad, el embajador de India en México, Muktesh Pardeshi, comentó que para su país es un honor ser el invitado en la FIL de Guadalajara. Mencionó que la idea surgió hace dos años y cada vez falta menos tiempo para que sea una realidad. “Se trata de un homenaje a la fuerza, al poder cultural y literario de la India. Ningún otro país había sido invitado de honor consecutivamente, pues primero ocurrió en el Festival Cervantino y ahora aquí. Estamos verdaderamente agradecidos con las autoridades mexicanas por extendernos la invitación”. Dijo que México e India han sido países amigos, pero de un tiempo a la fecha, su amistad se ha convertido en una relación de beneficios que cada vez se intensifica. GUANAJUATO.- El sonido de los telares impactó siempre a la coreógrafa y bailarina Malavika Sarukkai, célebre exponente del Bharatanatyam, una de las danzas clásicas y más antiguas del sur de la India. Le parecía que hablaban de ritmos que siempre habían formado parte de su vida en la danza. El hilo cobra vida en su espectáculo “Thari-The Loom” como cuerpos danzantes. Sarukkai creó el concepto y coreografía a la vez como un tributo al sari, la prenda tradicional para las mujeres en la India. Y en el espectáculo presentado en el Teatro Juárez así resonó: “El sari siempre me ha hablado intensamente sobre quién soy yo”. El sari es más que un trozo de tela: “Es una emoción, un estado de ánimo. A veces, una declaración”. “Thari-The Loom explora conceptos fundamentales que comparten la danza y el tejido, dos disciplinas en apariencia distintas, pero unidas: espacio, estructura, proporción, relación, alineación, oposición, simetría y motivo. Ambas disciplinas trabajan a través de la coordinación,

medida y diseño”, explicaba Sarukkai, en entrevista por correo electrónico. Algo que Sarukkai se ha cuestionado a lo largo de los años es cómo unir tradición y cambio. Esa búsqueda ha definido el cuerpo de su obra artística a lo largo de más de tres décadas. “La danza para mí es un lenguaje vivo”, sostuvo. La bailarina está convencida de que para ampliar los límites de la tradición, se necesita un profundo entendimiento de la forma de la danza, una técnica y bases inquebrantables, además de valor e imaginación para ex-

plorar más allá de lo que ya se ha intentado. “La habilidad de traducir el pensamiento en el lenguaje de la danza”, aseguró. Un trabajo creativo de varios meses, además de compromiso y dedicación: “Y, si eres afortunado, el camino se abre a un mundo magnífico de posibilidades”. Sarukkai creó esta pieza para un ensamble de seis bailarines, después de varias décadas de coreografías como solista. Una secuencia de gestos con las manos y expresión facial. Una pieza acompañada por una dotación de tabla,

flauta, sitar, violín, mridangam (percusión), veena (instrumento clásico de cuerda) y voz. La coreógrafa y bailarina invita a ver la danza clásica en varios niveles: entretenida, espectacular, significativa. “En lo personal, la danza me ha revelado una percepción más profunda y una gran belleza de espíritu. Y eso es lo que busco comunicar a través de mi arte”, agregó. Malavika Sarukkai Ensemble se presentará el 17 de octubre a las 20:00 horas en la sala Miguel Covarrubias en el Centro Cultural Universitario de la UNAM.

Ese templo de la música al que se refirió corresponde a las sonatas completas para violonchelo y piano de Beethoven. “Es la Biblia para los violonchelistas”, sintetizó Clein, acompañada por la pianista armenia Mariana Shirinyan. La dupla agotará las sonatas para violonchelo y piano, escritas entre 1796 y 1815, por el compositor en dos programas este fin de semana en el Festival Internacional Cervantino. viva”, que bailará el Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM, hoy dentro de su temporada 100, y como parte de los festejos por el centenario del Teatro Esperanza Iris, sede de la función artística. La ambivalencia de la relación de la coreógrafa con el

mar inspiraron los temas que aborda en la pieza dancística, sobre las distintas facetas del agua. Ésta es la primera pieza que López Ochoa presenta en el país, aunque fue creada hace varios años para el Ballet de República Dominicana.

USD 250,000 is being provided for the creation of infrastructure for “San Ignacio Community Exercise, Social Sports and Women’s Group Feeding Programme Complex”.
