India celebrates 68
Republic Day
India celebrated its 68th Republic Day on 26 January, 2017. The day was marked by a grand parade in the national capital. This year’s Chief Guest in the parade was HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Armed Forces. The highlights of this year’s Parade was a 149-member UAE Presidential Guard, the Air Force, the Navy and Army contingent led by a UAE band consisting of 35 musicians marching on Rajpath presenting a ceremonial salute to the President of India. Another highlight of this year’s parade was a fly-past by Tejas, the made-in-India multirole fighter jet that has been inducted into the Indian

Air Force. Other participating tableaux essayed themes that included ‘Green India- Clean India’, ‘Beti Bacho Beti Padhao’, ‘Skill India’, a tribute to Lokmanya Tilak on his 160th birth anniversary, art and lifestyle of Kutch, model government schools of Delhi and several others. In the honor of India’s Republic Day, Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building located in Dubai, was lit up in the colours of the Indian National flag on 25th and 26th Jan to celebrate India’s 68th Republic Day. Republic Day Celebrations in Mexico City The 68th Republic Day of India was celebrated on January 26 with a flag-hoisting ceremony at the Chancery premises. Ambassador Shri Muktesh K. Pardeshi hoisted the Tricolour, which was followed by the singing of the National Anthem, led by the students of Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre (GTICC). The Ambassador delivered the President’s address to the nation on the eve of the Republic Day. Besides the Embassy personnel and their families, the large gathering included prominent members of the
local Indian community from different walks of life, including academia, business, Mexican friends of India and others. The function concluded with a musical presentation by Santosh Nahar Group sponsored by ICCR and organized by the Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre. Republic Day Reception was hosted by Ambassador Pardeshi at India House on 27th January, in which a large number of dignitaries including Ministers, Ambassadors, senior officials of local government and prominent members of Indian community were present.

Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Celebrations
India celebrated the 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention from 7 - 9 January, 2017 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention is an important platform for engagement of the government of India and the state governments with the overseas Indian community. Pravasi Bhartiya Divas conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of the land of their ancestors for mutually beneficial activities. PBD has been held traditionally on 9th January every year to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi as a Pravasi from South Africa to India. Presently there are nearly 3.12 crore i.e. about 31.2 million overseas Indians settled globally, of which nearly 1.34 crore i.e.

13.4 million are Persons of Indian Origin and 1.78 crore i.e. 17.8 million are Non Resident Indians. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was celebrated in the Embassy of India, Mexico City on 9th January 2017. On this occasion, a documentary on PBD and excerpts from the speech of PM delivered during PBD on 8th January in Bengaluru were screened. Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Mr. Muktesh Pardeshi asked the Indian Community to remain united and attached to their roots.
Winners of Pravasi Bharatiya Samman from Mexico Dr. Rasik V.Joshi, Mexico (Literature)- Dr. Rasik Vihari Joshi, Professor in Sanskrit at El Colegio de Mexico, was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman or the Overseas Indian Award at the 11th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Overseas Indian Community Day) in Kochi on January 9, 2013 for his contributions to Sanskrit literature, which have led to enhancement of India’s image and promoted better understanding of India abroad.
Dr Rajaram Sanjaya, On 9 January 2015, Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram, the India-born plant scientist who led wheat breeding research at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) based in Mexico for more than three decades, received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award in Gandhinagar, India.Dr. Rajaram is the winner of the ‘2014 World Food Prize’ for developing 480 wheat varieties that have been released in 51 countries.

The second edition of Raisina Dialoge was held from January 19-21, 2017, with the theme of “The New Normal: Multilateralism with Multi-Polarity”. It was inaugrated by PM Narendra Modi, with 69 nations participating. The Raisina Dialogue is an annual conference held in New Delhi, envisioned to be India’s flagship conference of geopolitics and geo-economics. The conference is held jointly by Ministry of External Affairs, India and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), an independent think tank based in India. From Mexico, it was attended by Alejandro Schtulmann who is a founding partner and President of EMPRA, a political risk advisory and consulting firm focusing primarily on Mexico. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in the inaugural session said that India’s transformation is not separated from its external context. He said “Our economic growth; the welfare of our farmers; the employment opportunities for our youth; our access to capital, technology, markets and resources; and, security of our nation all of them are deeply impacted by developments in the world. But, the reverse is also true. The world needs India’s sustained rise, as much as India needs the world. Our desire to change our country has an indivisible link with the external world. It is, therefore, only natural that India’s choices at home and our international

priorities form part of a seamless continuum. Firmly anchored in India’s transformational goals.”

India @ Intermoda 2017 Ambassador of India, Shri Muktesh Pardeshi inaugurated the India pavilion at Intermoda Exhibition, Guadalajara on January 17, 2017. The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), in association with the Embassy of India held this promotion programme for Indian Textile products from 17-20 January 2017. The basic objective of organizing this Exhibition was to demonstrate the fabulous range of Indian synthetic and blended fabrics, made-ups including yarns to Mexican and others visiting buyers to facilitate sourcing of their specific requirements of textiles from India. As a result, this exhibition provided a platform to 22 Indian exhibitors to interact with their Mexican counterparts and to explore the Mexican market. Intermoda is one of the most important events for the textile industry of Latin America. This exhibition presents the latest trends and collections for the next season to prospective purchasers offering business opportunities at the international level. The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion
Council (SRTEPC), set up in 1954, is one of the oldest Export Promotion Councils in India.The Council has played a transforming role over the years, inculcating export culture and promoting exports of Indian manmade fibre and textiles. Exports of these items, which were negligible in the 1960s, have grown substantially to touch US$6.16 billion during 2013-14. India exports to nearly 140 countries at present.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2017
The 8th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit was organized from 10-13 January, 2017 at Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat the focus of which was sustainable economic and social development. The central theme of VGS17 was “Connecting India to the world”, to provide a platform for the global leaders to have a dialogue for betterment of global economy. It brought together Heads of the States and Governments, Ministers, Leaders from the Corporate world, Policy Makers, Heads of International Institutions from around the world to further the cause of development and promote cooperation. The partner countries included Japan, Canada, USA, UK, Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, France, Poland, Sweden, Singapore and UAE. The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi used the occasion to highlight not only the significant achievements and areas of reforms of the Government but also to send out a strong and clear message that India is and will continue to be a favoured destination for investment, given the multi sectoral approach to governance and reforms that the Government has embarked upon. He highlighted that India is ranked third in the list of top prospective host economies for 2016-18 in the World Investment Report 2016 and that India has also shown positive progress in the Global Competitiveness Report, Global Innovation Index, Global Logistic Performance Index of the current year. These indicators have reaffirmed that India is today one of the most open economies of the world. In turn, it has resulted in total FDI inflows of US $ 130 billion in the last two-and-a-half years. It has, therefore, made India a leading recipient of investment in the Asia Pacific besides ensuring India’s position among the top 10 countries globally in terms of FDI inflows. Addressing the core concern of every business, providing return on investment, he highlighted that India has risen to the first position in the “Baseline Profitability Index” thus emerging as the top country in providing return on investment. He reiterated his most innovative ‘Make in India’ programme that has catalysed into one of the biggest brands that India has ushered in. India is becoming a global hub of manufacturing, designing, innovation while celebrating the second anniversary of “Make in India”. The Cultural Connect Indian Music gets Mexican Accolades
Santosh Nahar musical group, led by Santosh Nahar (Violin) accompanied by Mr. Sahitya Nahar (Sitar) and Raj Kumar Nahar (Tabla), visited the leading Latin American country’s capital , Mexico City from Jan. 24 - 28 on the occasion of 68th Republic Day of India. During their visit, they performed at Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) on 25th January . The event was attended by the music lovers of the city. They presented a piece of their art at the Embassy auditorium on 26th January in front of a hall full of Indians and Mexicans , who had gathered to celebrate the national festival. The soul enriching musical concert was performed at the India House, Residence of Indian Ambassador to Mexico City on 27th Jan. Their performance was widely acclaimed by Mexican and Indian audience. Dr. Santosh Kumar Nahar has established himself among the leading and most promising violin performers in Hindustan classical music.
Bharatnatyam perfomance by GTICC students
One of the oldest dance forms of the world, Bharatnatyam was performed by the students of the Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre on 20th January 2017. The Bharatnatyam teacher who is a Mexican national , explained the origin of the dance and elaborated the nuances of the dance form to the audience. The presentation received acclaims from one and all present to understand the unique classical dance of India. The event was inaugurated by the Ambassador Mr. Muktesh Pardeshi and he honoured the participants.

Ambassador of India congratulates new Foreign Minister of Mexico
Ambassador of India to Mexico, Shri. Muktesh Pardeshi met with Mexico’s new Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Luis Videgaray Caso at Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 12 January 2017. He felicitated him on his appointment and wished him great success in his endeavours, especially in strengthening India-Mexico relations.
Special issue highlightes importance of India:
Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi recently attended the launch of a special issue of the journal ‘Revista Mexicana de Politica Exterior’.The journal contains many essays on Mexico’s relations with the Asia-Pacific region and one essay particularly focusing on the importance of India for Mexico, written by Fernanda Vázquez Vela. The journal is a quarterly publication of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico published through the Matías Romero Institute. Delhi University Students @ UNAM A group of differently abled students from University of Delhi visited UNAM, The National Autonomous University of Mexico, as a part of its International Educational Excellence Programme in respect of persons with disabilities to international locations. The students were invited by UNAM to attend a Disability Consortium titled ‘Dialogues on Disability’. The students and accompanying officials visited Embassy and had an interaction with Ambassador Shri Muktesh K. Pardeshi.
Deepika Padukone wins Mexican Hearts Hollywood Movie ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’ was premiered in Mexico City on 5th of January and it was India’s sweetheart Deepika Padukone who stole the show. The actress, who celebrated her 31st birthday on January 5, was the star of the evening. Everyone from fans, co-stars and even presenters on the red carpet made sure to greet the actress and convey their birthday wishes. It was her maiden visit to Mexico City. On this occasion, Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi attended the premiere and met her to wish her a happy birthday as well as success for her movie.
