The Cervantino International Festival is the most important cultural and artistic festival in the Spanish-speaking world and ranks among the top four festivals globally. It is celebrated each year for two weeks in the month of October in the city of Guanajuato.

Es un gran privilegio y orgullo el que India participe como País Invitado de Honor, en la edición número 46 del Festival Internacional Cervantino. Es de hecho un reconocimiento al rico legado cultural de la India y su contribución al mundo, a lo largo de su extensa historia. Quisiera transmitir mi profundo agradecimiento a la Secretaría de Cultura, al Gobierno del Estado de Guanajuato y a la Dirección General del Festival Internacional Cervantino, de quienes he recibido un apoyo invaluable durante estos últimos meses, en la preparación de la participación especial de la India. Por parte de la India, las presentaciones están siendo organizadas por el Consejo Indio de Relaciones Culturales, rama cultural del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores del Gobierno de la India. Ambos, India y México, son civilizaciones milenarias y el Festival Internacional Cervantino ofrece una oportunidad única, al diálogo entre dos culturas ancestrales y su sistema de valores. Nuestra misión es mostrarles la diversidad de la India, su rico y colorido programa cultural, a través de danza, música, teatro, marionetas, yoga, cocina y Bollywood. Lo anterior, lo estaremos realizando a través de una docena y media de grupos y exposiciones participantes provenientes de India, en 30 ciudades de México, dando lugar a más de 100 eventos, que darán como resultado un Festival de la India, a lo largo de tres semanas. Cabe destacar que la India no sólo es una civilización milenaria sino también, es la democracia más grande del mundo y la economía emergente de más rápido crecimiento.

Este será un gran Festival de la India, el cuál ha sido promovido desde los tiempos inmemorables de la noción de Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (el mundo es una familia). En el Festival Internacional Cervantino, estaremos celebrando la unidad en la diversidad y cómo debemos darle forma a nuestro futuro, siendo estos dos últimos, los temas del Festival de este año. Durante los últimos 45 años, el Festival Internacional Cervantino se ha posicionado como un foro para conectar, construir relaciones a través de las culturas y curar las rupturas creadas por las políticas del mundo. Malavika Sarukkai
Building metaphor of the fabric from the dance
Thari - The Loom is a dance choreographed by Malavika Sarukkai which is inspired by the loom of sari woven in India. The staging of Sarukkai Group explored the artistic relationship between the dancer and the weaver, giving rise to a dynamic web in which both elements come together in a harmonic sense. The audience was spellbound by a scintillating culmination where the sari was shown to be a metaphor of life and spirituality.

Manipuri Jagoi Marup
Rendition of classical dance, Manipuri
Manipuri Jagoi Marup led by Ms. Ningbaba Rina Devi is the leading company for development of Manipuri, an Indian Classical Dance. The energy of drummers combined with the grace of dancers in beautiful costumes was a delight for audience. The main themes of the dance were linked to the life of Krishna, a Hindu mythological God revered throughout India.

Ozone Raaga
This is a music band that fuses Indian classical music with the European sound tradition.The band is led by Hafeez Ahmed Alvi, one of the leading sitarists in the world. This band performed in El Trasnoche in Guanajuato and was greatly appreciated by the audience.

Celebration of Sufi and contemporary mystic poetry
Rashmi Agarwal is a renowned singer and songwriter who has devoted herself to interpreting traditional Sufi poetry, ghazal and bhakti. She enthralled the audience with her beautiful sufi songs ranging from Meerabai, Bulleh Shah to evergreen “dama dam mast kalendar” in her melodious voice in the beautiful church of Templo de la Valenciana in Guanajuato.

Samandar Khan Manganiar
Lok Rang, traditional songs that talk about life
Samandar Khan is a popular and versatile interpreter of the Sufi, a spiritual rendition of devotional songs popular across South Asia. Samandar Khan and his team of musicians and dancers enthralled the audience with his beautiful Rajasthani songs in Los Pastitos in Guanajuato. About a crowd of one thousand people danced to his tunes and enjoyed the evening.

The Adishakti
A Laboratory for Theatre Research
The company Adishakti is an internationally recognized institution for integrating traditional and contemporary Indian culture. As a Laboratory for Theatre Research, it presented a ritualistic theatre based on music, expressions and cycle of life and death in this edition of Cervantino International Festival.

Meher the Troupe Life as long as a dream
Meher the Troupe is made up of a diverse group of performers, bound by a deep love for puppets. It engaged in a theatrical performance with puppets of various sizes and colours. The play was based on the teachings and life of Swami Vivekananda, the thinker, mystic and religious leader of India.

Classical music concert
An Indian classical music concert was presented by Mehtab Ali Khan on sitar, Danish Ali Khan on violin and Hindole Majumdar on tabla in Teatro Juรกrez in Guanajuato. The musical group enthralled the audience with presentation of melodious raagas.

Quixote Kathakali
A fusion of Indian and Spanish cultures
Margi Kathakali Company presented the Quixote in Kathakali as a fusion of Indian and Spanish cultures in Cervantino International Festival. Margi is one of the most important institutions of performing arts, which was established in 1969 as a school of Kathakali. This was a play based on Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s novel Don Quijote. The artists beautifully portrayed the characters of the novel as Kathakali dancers in their colorful costumes.

Un diálogo India y México: A dance drama based on the work Vislumbres de la India by Octavio Paz, Nobel laureate and former Mexican Ambassador to India, was presented as an Indo-Mexican production in Guanajuato.

Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan Desert Pulse
This is a group of popular and internationally known percussionists from an artistic tribe from the western state of Rajasthan in India. The group combines the sound of multiple dhols with the sounds of other traditional percussion instruments. Indian cultural groups concluded their performance at Cervantino with presentation of Dhol Drummers of Rajasthan in the presence of a huge audience of about 10,000 persons. It was a resounding success and a befitting farewell to Cervantino International Festival.

The Dhol Drummers performed at a Reception at India House, Mexico City, to mark the successful closing of Cervantino Festival. Ms Marcela Díez Martínez, DG Cervantino graced the occasion with her presence. Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi felicitated the performers and concluded the successful edition of Cervantino International Festival.
Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi also bid farewell, on behalf of the Embassy of India, to Mr. M.R.Quereshi who retired from the post of Director,GTICC on 30th October. He served as Director GTICC from January 2016 to November 2018.

Academic conferences
Three academic conferences were organized in Cervantino International Festival in the University of Guanajuato. The first was by Dr. Wendy Phillips, Professor at UNAM, on classical art in India. The second conference was by Dr. Benjamin Preciado, Professor at COLMEX on the culture of India. The third was by Dr. Adrián Muñoz, Professor at COLMEX. Prof. Adrián Muñoz is an Indologist and holds a Ph.D. in South Asian studies.
Yoga
Workshops on Yoga were conducted by Ms. Diti Vora, Yoga instructor of GTICC in “Los Pastitos” in Guanajuato as a part of celebrations of Cervantino.

Exhibitions
A photographic exhibition "Sacred India and Archiva" by well-known Indian photographer Amit Pasricha was on display in Museo Casa del Conde Rul in Guanajuato. Another exhibition showcasing Indian traditional costumes of different states and classical dances was also exhibited in the museum during Cervantino Festival.
Artes Visuales
Many Indian photo exhibitions were on display in Guanajuato on the occasion of Cervantino International Festival. "The Home and the World" by Norma PatiĂąo, who has captured images of various aspects of Indian life. This was a fascinating visual work which has captured India through the lens. This exhibition was on display in the Galeria el Atrio of the University of Guanajuato. Another exhibition "The spell of India" by Yolanda Andrade presents images of several cultural cities of India, when she travelled to India in 2006 and 2010. This exhibition is displayed in Museo de la Alhondiga de Granaditas and is open up to January 15, 2019.

Weaving the Memory-Textiles of India
Indian textiles are recognized globally and have greatly influenced the dressing sense of the world. An exhibition of this rich and diverse cultural heritage of India was presented at the University of Guanajuato at Sala de Hermenegildo Bustos.
Mahatma Gandhi Exhibition
An exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi as a part of Cervantino was also inaugurated by Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi in Gene Byron Museum in Guanajuato. The exhibition displayed the life of Mahatma Gandhi in a collection of pictures since his childhood. The exhibition was organized with the support of El Colegio Mahatma Gandhi in Mexico.
Tapestry
Shams Tapestry collection, an organization for preserving traditional arts from India displayed its collection of tapestry works with artistic exhibitions of colourful threads woven into beautiful paintings and scenes at Guanajuato.

Ciclo de cine
An Indian film festival was organized at Guanajuato as a part of celebrations of Cervantino. Some of the movies were shown at the auditorium of the University of Guanajuato. The movies shown were: Kal Ho Na Ho, Lagaan, Fanaa, Guru, Mohabatein , Veer Zaara, The Namesake, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Pakeezah, Black, Neal N Nikki.
Casa de la India
Casa de la India (House of India) was inaugurated by DG ICCR Mrs.Riva Ganguly Das along with DG Cervantino, and Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi in Plaza del Baratillo in Guanajuato on October 10th. Indian textiles, handicrafts and food were on sale here. Casa de la India displayed a microscopic view of India on the streets of Guanajuato. The colours and smell of India was not missed by anyone visiting Guanajuato. Minister of Culture of Mexico Ms. Maria Cristina GarcĂa Cepeda and Ambassador of Mexico to India Ms. Melba Pria also visited the casa. Casa de la India was thronged with huge number of population over a period of 20 days.

GTICC demonstrations
Teachers of GTICC and other experts of Indian dance and music presented performances in Plaza del Baratillo in front of Casa de la India every evening at 06:00 pm as a part of Cervantino International Festival. 11th October- Sitar concert by Sidartha Siliceo 12th October- Bharatanatyam dance by Patricia Torres 13th October- Kalbelia dance by Claudia Llanos 14th October- Bhangra dance by Aline Shaabi. These performances were followed by question and answer sessions and attracted huge crowd.
GTICC Teachers presented lecture demonstrations in Plaza Baratillo and explained about Indian classical dance, music, ayurveda and bollywood dance. The presentations were made by Mariana Flores (Mohiniyattam), Alejandra HolguĂn (Ayurveda), Pt. Radheshyam Sharma (Tabla) and Kate Asmara (Bollywood).

Indian Food Festival
Indian Food Festival was inaugurated in Hotel Presidente InterContinental Mexico City in co-operation with India Tourism Development Cooperation and Incredible India who had sent two Chefs from India. The festival was a part of India as the Guest of Honor country for Cervantino International Festival. The festival ran from 4 to 21 October and was received well by the public.

The Embassy of India Mexico City in co-operation with India Tourism Office, New York and Diva Travels, Delhi organized an event on 26 October to showcase tourism opportunities in India. The event was attended by around 75 tour operators & travel agents from Mexico. Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi addressed the gathering and spoke on growing people to people links between India and Mexico. A large number of tourism operators expressed their interest in exploring the different facets of tourism in India. The event was followed by a cocktail.

India in Latin America
The Confederation of Indian Industries partnered with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and Caribbean (UNECLAC) and the Federation of Chilean Industry (SOFOFA) to organise the eighth edition of its flagship event, the India-Latin America and Caribbean Conclave in Santiago, Chile, from 1-2 October 2018. The aim was to build on the success of the previous Conclave in November 2016, held in Guadalajara, Mexico’s Silicon Valley. Inaugurating the Conclave, Minister of State for External Affairs Gen VK Singh said, “The complementary nature and synergy between the two sides offer tremendous opportunities for further enhancing Trade and Investments.” From $ 2 bn in 2000, trade grew to $ 35 bn 2017-18. Export-Import Bank of India’s study titled “India-LAC Trade: Recent Trends and Opportunities in Select Countries” was released at the Conclave. The study analyses the current trends in trade between LAC and India, and highlights the opportunities for further expanding trade relations between LAC and India. The study identifies potential items for exports from India in order to increase the overall bilateral trade between the two countries, while also addressing the issue of India’s trade balance and enhance India’s ranking as LAC’s trade partner.
In the previous FY 2017, India became one of the top ten trade partner of Mexico. The year 2018 has taken the stride further ahead. In the first 8 months of the year, the total trade reached the level of 6.5 billion USD, with trade balance in Indian favour. Meanwhile, in terms of investment new plans of Indian companies are under discussion. Here is a small report of the event month of September and October.
The next head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, presented the mobility plan for the next administration, which proposes to create more transport networks, promote electric and low emission transport network. The Indian Embassy invited several Indian companies operating in this sector to attend the event. Mahindra Group attended with a large delegation. The follow up meeting is expected to take place in Januray 2019. The new Government has a keen focus on reducing the problem of pollution in Mexico City by introduction of new public transportation fleet of electric or low emission buses and taxis. They also keenly interested in retrofitting of old vehicles into hybrid or electrical version. They hope to learn from the experience of India and expect more Indian companies to participate in their ambitious program.

India in Expo Ferretera
35 Indian companies participated in Expo Ferretera in Guadalajara (6-8 Sept, 2018) under the banner of CII collectively in India pavilion. Expo Ferretera is the biggest expo of Mexico in construction and hardware sector. Indian companies have made regular participation in the fair for several years. El India pavillion was inaugurated by Mr. Xavier Orendain MartĂnez, Honrary Consul of India, Mr. Xavier
India in Expo CIHAC
45 Indian companies from Morbi Ceramics Association participated in the Expo CIHAC (16-20 Oct 2018) in Mexico City under the banner of Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI). The India pavilion was inaugurated by the Ambassador of India, Mr. Muktesh Pardeshi, on 16 October. All the participating 45 companies were from the Morbi Ceramics Association. To lead the group, the President of Association Mr. Nilesh Jetpriya had also visited the Expo. Indian exports to Mexico in this particular sector has grown by more than 1000% in the last one year.

Orendain de Obeso, President, CANACO Guadalajara and Mr. Ashwani Kumar, Comercial Represenattive of India in Mexico. India has had a regular participation in this Expo for last 3 years. The Indian companies have found a good market in Mexico in this sector of construction equipments and hardware tools. Most of the participating companies are already exporting to Mexican companies and look forward to diversify their client base.
Tractors from India
Ambassador Muktesh Pardeshi visited the assembly plant of New Holland in Queretaro on 17 Oct 2018. The company is importing 100% made in India tractors and engines for tractors for Mexican market. The Ambassador had earlier in the year visited the assembly plant of Mahindra Tractors as well. India has been doing well in the export of tractors to Mexico, especially in the segment of 25bhp to 100bhp engines. Mahindra, Sonalika and Farmctrac (Escorts) are expanding their market share in Mexico every year.

El alcalde capitalino y el embajador de la India en México se reunieron en la Presidencia Municipal en donde acordaron trabajar en un programa de hermanamiento y apoyo en educación y tecnología Saúl Cruz Guanajuato.- Alejandro Navarro Saldaña, alcalde de Guanajuato capital, y Muktesh Pardeshi, embajador de la India en México, se reunieron en Presidencia Municipal en donde acordaron trabajar en un programa de hermanamiento y apoyo en educación y tecnología. A la salida del encuentro, Navarro Saldaña sostuvo que el embajador le expresó la intención de apoyar a Guanajuato capital con becas para burócratas y para los policías para que puedan ir a la India a capacitarse.
Aunque no detalló sobre cuántas becas son las que se darían, el alcalde sostuvo que se centrarán en seguridad, educación, administración municipal y tecnologías de la información. Navarro Saldaña comentó que lo que aprendan los policías y burócratas que se vayan a la India, lo replicarán a su regreso al municipio. Además, reiteró que la India donará un busto de Mahatma Gandhi a Guanajuato capital, por lo que en coordinación con el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) revisarán en qué zona del municipio lo instalarán, el cual pretenden inaugurar en enero del próximo año.

150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi The International Day of Non-Violence is observed every year on 2 October, that is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Numerous events and celebrations were organized around the world this year to commemorate the celebrations of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Several programmes were organized by the Embassy of India, Mexico City to commemorate the occasion. The celebrations will continue until 2 October 2019 through exhibitions, documentaries and seminars. Children of Mahatma Gandhi school celebrated the day by organizing an exhibition and projects on Mahatma Gandhi and released balloons of peace. M.R.Qureshi, Director GTICC visited the school and presented books on the life of Mahatma Gandhi to the students. An online quiz on the life of Mahatma Gandhi was launched over social media which will be continued for a year.
Embassy officials offered floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Chapultepec Park in the morning.
Ms. Radha Bhatt, eminent Gandhian and former President of Gandhi Peace Foundation visited the Embassy and delivered a talk on the 'Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in 21st Century'. She also unveiled the commemorative postage stamps released by the Government of India on this occasion.

La India y México se encuentran entre las mayores democracias y entre las economías de más rápido crecimiento en el mundo actual. Representan dos antiguas civilzaciones, cuyo primer encuentro se remonta al periodo colonial del siglo XVI, a través de la ruta comercial del Galeón de Manila por el Pacífico. Los primeros contactos influyeron en una multitud de cuestiones sociales, incluyendo hábitos alimenticios, estilos de vestimenta y formas artísticas. México fue también la primera nación latinoamericana en reconocer a la India inmediatamente, después de su independencia en 1947. Las relaciones diplomáticas formales se establecieron en 1950. Durante los últimos 70 años, la amistad y la cooperación entre las dos naciones han crecido constantemente. Somos testigos de un nuevo dinamismo en nuestras relaciones
bilaterales, tras la exitosa visita del Primer Ministro Narendra Madi a México, en junio de 2016. Tanto el nivel, como la frecuencia del diálogo político entre los dos países, han aumentado. La Asociación Privilegiada que se acordó en 2007 ha progresado y ambas partes han expresado continuamente su deseo de elevar las relaciones bilaterales al nivel de Asociación Estratégica. A lo largo de los diez años de la Asociación Privilegiada, se ha triplicado el comercio bilateral y se ha producido un aumento sustancial de las inversiones. México se ha convertido en el mayor socio comercial de la India en la región de América Latina y el Caribe, y en el segundo mayor socio en el continente Americano. Para la India, México es también el mayor inversionista de esta región. Además, en 2017, la India entró en el grupo de los diez principales socios comerciales de México, superando la barrera que
representa la distancia geográfica. Esto es digno de admirar, si se tiene en cuenta que hace una década (2008), el comercio bilateral registrado fue de 2 mil 900 millones de dólares y la India ni siquiera figuraba entre los veinte principales socios comerciales de México. El comercio bilateral ha crecido a un ritmo sin precedente del 33 por ciento y ahora asciende a 8 mil 350 millones de dólares (2017). A este ritmo, el comercio entre las dos naciones superará, esperemos, los diez mil millones de dólares en 2018. La entrada de empresas de la India en México se notó por primera vez en 1991-92, cuando lspat lnternational (ahora parte del Grupo ArcelorMitta0 adquirió la empresa siderúrgica estatal de Lázaro Cárdenas y rápidamente la convirtió en una empresa rentable. Hoy en día, más de 180 empresas indias tienen inversiones en México y crean más de treinta mil oportuni-
dades de empleo, principalmente en las industrias de tecnología de la información, farmacéutica y automotriz. Las compañías indias consideran a México como un destino estratégico de inversión y una oportunidad para mejorar su competitividad global. Agradezco al Gobierno de México por invitar a la India como "País Invitado de Honor" en el prestigiado Festival Internacional Cervantino, lo cual es un reconocimiento a la rica herencia cultural de India y a su valiosa contribución al mundo, a lo largo de su larga historia. La India también ha sido convocada para ser el "País Invitado de Honor" de la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara en 2019. Creo sinceramente que nuestras afinidades culturales y la mayor presencia cultural de la India en México en 2018-19, ayudarán a profundizar los lazos entre los pueblos de dos antiguas civilizaciones.
