Participating in and observing the arts can improve physical and mental health - and if you’re well then the arts can keep you healthy too. Our learning programme has a whole variety of activity to try, all of which are designed to be open to everyone, with no formal qualifications required. So whether you feel the need to pick up that old guitar gathering dust, or you’re just interested to learn more about the history of art, you can feel confident that our course, workshop or drop-in session will cater for you in an accessible, social and caring setting. Our programme is taught by practicing artists who want to see you progress and enjoy yourself, but also remember how difficult it is to make a start. Everyone has it within themselves to be creative, so everyone can use art to improve their lives. Learn how to tackle subjects including still life, landscape, the model, and abstract concepts.

These friendly, supportive classes are devoted entirely to discussion and criticism of work done at home. The six sessions are based around a focus and specific creative problems set by the tutor. You will be required to work outside of the class using your own materials, resulting in a number of pieces using a variety of materials and approaches.

Different themes will be studied each week, culminating in a final piece showcasing your new skills.

Gallery 1 Saturday 8 September – Sunday 10 December FREE The first UK solo exhibition by American artist Laura Swanson. Swanson examines the behaviour of looking at physical difference, working across media including drawing, installation, photography, and sculpture. She will present brand new especially commissioned artwork for this exhibition, including a major new photographic series, alongside recent work such as Swanson’s mixed-media series ‘Uniforms’ (2014 - 2015).

Claude Cahun Beneath this Mask Gallery 2 & 3 Saturday 8 September – Sunday 10 December

Sensory sculpture: masks and costumes Sunday 22 October, 12pm – 2pm £10 TUTOR: Gina Mollett Build your own mask or costume using cardboard, paper and fabric. Create characters through colour and texture and tell your very own story.

Art in focus: anthropomorphic objects Saturday 11 November, 10am – 3pm £21 / £13.50 TUTOR: Miriam Gill Inspired by the AAC’s major exhibition of Laura Swanson’s art, this workshop traces the presence of anthropomorphic objects in art, from Medieval Art to Surrealism.

FREE French photographer Claude Cahun (1894–1954) achieved posthumous fame for her elusive self-portraits in which she assumed multiple personae. Born Lucy Schwob, she adopted the pseudonym in 1917 to free herself from the narrow confines of gender. In these now famous images, Cahun anticipated the performative work of contemporary artists such as Cindy Sherman.

Batik collaged self-portraits Saturday 11 November, 10am – 3.30pm £41 / £23 TUTOR: Andrew Wynne Inspired by the Laura Swanson exhibition, participants will use exciting combinations of collage and batik processes to create imaginative self-portraits.

This Hayward Touring exhibition is presented in collaboration with Jersey Heritage and was first exhibited at the Women of the World Festival 2015, Southbank Centre. 15

B A LC O N Y G A L L E RY Hosting four to six exhibitions each year, the focus is on artists living in the region who are connected to Attenborough Arts Centre through our Creative Learning programme or projects.

Attenborough Forum Debates & Lectures The Attenborough Forum is a space for anyone interested in critical discussion, art form development, continuing professional development, research and symposia, including artist talks.

Lewys Holt and Katherine Hall Thursday 9 November, 6pm – 7pm £5 Join dance artists Lewys Holt and Katherine Hall as they explore what it means to hide, dress-up or frame ourselves in society. Discover new ways of looking at the latest exhibition through a choreographic duet that will uncover themes that lie behind the work.

Venue Hire Attenborough Arts Centre has a range of fully adaptable and accessible spaces including for hire, including the Diana Princess of Wales Hall and three studio spaces. From only £15 per hour, you can hire spaces for performance, training, creative activities, rehearsals, workshops and meetings. Learn about the materials and techniques of ancient and modern art, ranging from medieval monochrome to the pivotal rise of photography and the enduring appeal of glass.

Participants will consider the effects of war and political upheaval in 15th century Florence on the careers of Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo and their Medici patrons.

How subversive was composer William Byrd? We look for answers in the music, politics and culture of the time.

Saturday 28 October, 11am - 6pm We are very excited to be hosting our first one-day craft fair at the Attenborough Arts Centre. Over 40 exhibitors from as far afield as Glasgow, alongside local favourites, will be selling a wide range of beautiful things, including ceramics, jewellery, textiles, glass, paper, prints, paintings, wood turning, seasonal decorations, cards and gifts. Some makers will also be demonstrating. Come and shop for unique gifts or just a treat for yourself, just in time for the festive season.

TUTOR: Kim Woods Introducing your children to yoga at an early age can help them learn healthy lifestyle habits and set the foundation for a fit future. Yoga helps to improve concentration, boost confidence and reduce the level of stress in children. This 5-day course will introduce your kids to the fundamentals to yoga in a fun and accessible way.

We offer FREE workshops and performances for members of our Inclusive Youth Arts Programme. Please note that the Inclusive Youth Arts Programme is for children and young people aged 0 - 18 years old with the most complex disabilities and needs.

ARTS AWARD We are an Arts Award Centre delivering all 5 levels of Arts Award. YOUNG AMBASSADORS Are you aged 14 – 19 and interested in the arts? Join our Young Ambassadors Group and help shape our work at Attenborough Arts Centre. Dance Latin American dance 3 October – 12 December (except 17 October) 16 January – 27 March (except 13 February) £68 / £38 for 10 sessions TUTOR: Maggie Muñoz For beginners Tuesdays, 6pm – 7.30pm Get on your feet and have a go at this fun, energetic and exciting dance style. Improve your health, fitness and wellbeing. For adults interested in learning the basic skills, this informal course is led by an experienced dance facilitator and requires no specialist clothing or footwear. Enjoy being part of a friendly group where the emphasis is on having fun – a healthy tonic for budding vocalists. Ideal for all ages, whether you already love to sing or want to find your voice. Explore a repertoire of songs in a wide variety of styles and traditions, including musicals, popular classics, folk songs, part songs and comedy items. The singing is mainly in unison, with some simple partsinging, mainly learnt by ear, depending on the ability and number of participants. No musical knowledge necessary. 26

Learn in a friendly group setting with a strong emphasis on ensemble playing. No previous musical knowledge is required for either of the beginners’ level courses. Acoustic guitar course: You will need to bring a guitar plectrum and preferably a steel strung guitar. The improver’s course is suitable for players with approximately 12 months experience including an understanding of basic rhythms in music notation. Classical guitar course: You will need to bring your own nylon strung guitar, footstool and course book – please ask us for details.
