Beneath this Mask Gallery 3 Saturday 9 September – Sunday 10 December Exhibition opening Friday 8 September, 5.30pm - 8pm A Hayward Touring exhibition of photography by gender-defying artist Claude Cahun (1894 – 1954). Beneath the Mask will show 42 contemporary giclee prints by French photographer Claude Cahun, whose radical selfportraits brought her posthumous fame. Born Lucy Schwob, she adopted the pseudonym in 1917 to free herself from the narrow confines of gender. Cahun’s work was far beyond its time, challenging ideas of gender, identity and traditional portraiture in these now famous images.

Saturday 9 September – Sunday 10 December Exhibition opening Friday 8 September, 5.30pm - 8pm First UK solo exhibition by American artist Laura Swanson. Gallery 1 present brand new, especially commissioned work by Laura Swanson: the photographic series, Beauty and Recluse, alongside recent work from her mixed-media series Uniforms (2014 – 2015) and pieces from various past projects. Swanson examines the behaviour of looking at physical difference, working across media including drawing, installation, photography, and sculpture. Her work often references her experience of being a short-statured person, confronting the impact of objectification, exploitation and marginalisation as a result of physical difference.

Emancipation?

Tuesday 17 October – Friday 17 November

Saturday 12 August – Sunday 24 September Emancipation? is an exhibition in response to artists Claude Cahun and Laura Swanson, exploring themes and ideas that challenge the dynamics of power, control, vulnerability, alienation and identity. This exhibition aims to spark debate, offering rich diversity and a variety of different perspectives. The artists exhibiting are: Caitlin Griffiths, Chi Lam, Christine Stevens, Jackie Berridge, Michael Forbes, Nick Mobbs, Pamela Schilderman, Stewart Easton, Tersea Wells, Vicky Hodgson. They create work that challenge ‘social norms’; some are playful with their message, while some are straightforward and direct, leaving viewers with a rawness of intent. Curated by Chris Samuels.

A high quality touring exhibition portraying the younger generation of sound system men and women artists as productive entrepreneurs, creating their own arts ecology in modern day Britain. Look out for our Let’s Play Vinyl participatory workshops and explore sound systems and technology on Saturday 14 October & Saturday 4 November at University of Leicester’s Students Union.

Take part on our FREE Gallery family workshops every Saturday, 1pm - 3pm, during exhibitions. 7

Unlocking the World Through Art: A Sensory Atelier Gallery 3 Wednesday 10 January – Monday 29 January Come on a journey to see our Sensory Ateliers, a unique, co-curated installation of artwork created across arts residencies by students of two Special Education Needs schools: Ellesmere College and Ashmount School. This project is supported by Arts Council England, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Ashmount School and Ellesmere College. “The work and atmosphere created amazing. We are so pleased to be part of this work and when you see quality accounts of it like this, it makes it even better and supports the creation of a legacy for the future.” Co-Principal at Ellesmere College, Lisa Pitwood

Juan DelGado: Altered Landscapes Gallery 2 Saturday 6 January – Sunday 25 February Exhibition opening Friday 5 January, 5.30pm - 8pm Altered Landscapes is an immersive multimedia installation which tackles themes of trauma, displacement, personal narratives and landscape reminiscent of the experience of refugees. There are traces of their existence, fragmented experiences, fleeting moments and marks left on the land as they pass through to find safety. DelGado travelled to Greece, Macedonia and Calais to film, photograph and record the journeys taken by refugees and the places they have passed through. Altered Landscapes aims to engage the audience in an intimate account of the refugees in order to open up contemplation and discussion about the current situation in Europe, a place that has become filled with militarised border control.

Awakenings

Sunday 17 September, 7pm Pay what you think 1 hour (16+ years)

Saturday 23 September, 2pm - 4pm and 6pm - 8pm £5 / £3.50 15 minute slots for 2 audience members at a time (12+ years)

“Esteemed doctors” Howlett and Clarke have finally been persuaded to share their latest findings. They have promised to use “layman’s terms”. Except for when they don’t. Their lecture will focus upon a vaguely scientific examination of our response to trauma, and how this may affect individuals and society as whole. Except for when it doesn’t. A devised response to the human experience of trauma and how we fix ourselves. With integrated access for those with sensory disabilities, creative captioning, humour, heart-breaking sincerity and a bit of a mess. 12

A darkened room. Velvet curtains. An uncanny sense of familiarity. Awakenings re-imagines filmic narratives and explores the mise-en-scène of cinema through an intimately choreographed performance for two, experienced within a purpose-built set. An experimental, immersive performance that shifts between theatre and contemporary dance, devised and performed by Kerryn Wise and Tina Carter.

Quarter Life Crisis

Friday 29 September, 7.30pm Saturday 30 September, 2pm and 7.30pm £10 / £8 2 hours 45 minutes (16+ years)

Friday 6 October, 7.30pm £8 / £5 1 hour (14+ years)

East Midlands theatre company Four Wheeled Theatre take on Peter Schaffer’s classic play, Equus. 1973. Martin Dysart, a psychiatrist struggling with both his professional and personal convictions, finds himself confronted with a uniquely disturbed patient, 17-year-old Alan Strang. Responsible for blinding six horses, Alan is placed under Dysart’s care. But as the lines between doctor and patient begin to blur, the two find themselves on a collision course of wits and ideals. As Dysart examines the young man, his upbringing and the boy’s troubled history, this increasingly murky case will bring him into contact not just with Alan’s tortured subconscious, but the terrifying deity that lurks beneath.

Alicia is a hot mess. She doesn’t know what she’s doing with her life. Swiping left, swiping right, trying to find the perfect match. Even though she’s a Londoner, born and bred, the scent of Lagos peppers her existence in the Ends. Everyone around her seems to know where they’re going in life, but she’s trying to find ways to cheat growing up and keep her 16-25 railcard. What does it mean to be an adult, and when do you become one? Quarter Life Crisis mixes addictive basslines, spoken word and audience participation.

Tayo Aluko & Friends presents

Just An Ordinary Lawyer Monday 23 October, 7.30pm Venue: The Y Theatre £14 / £12 90 minutes (14+ years) In 1978, Nigerian-born Tunji Sowande quietly broke through multiple barriers to become Britain’s first Black judge. We follow Sowande as he muses on international politics and history as they affect the Black world, from Africa to the US to the UK. A fine concert singer and keen cricket lover, Sowande opines from the point of view from one who would rather watch sports and spread love through the medium of song. From the writer and performer of the multi-award-winning Call Mr. Robeson comes another “brilliantly put together history lesson delivered as art” Dirt & Candy

D.A.N.C.E is developing a new comedy experience. See comedians and dancers working together and creating something new (we’re not sure what yet), but we know it’s not like anything you’ve seen before. Comedians perform their routines, whilst dancers react and improvise their interpretation on stage with them. And then they swap; comedians try their hand (or foot?) at busting a move and dancers find out what it takes to tell a joke. With a disability focus in this event, this is an exciting way to see different artforms working together. Hosted by the loveable / enigmatic / lover of shirts with animals on it: Daniel Nicholas. Supported by Arts Council England and Dance4.

On The Run presents

Tell Me Anything Friday 10 November, 6pm Pay what you think 1 hour (14+ years) David’s 15. He’s doing OK. His girlfriend has an eating disorder but he’s doing OK. Combining rich storytelling with physical theatre, Tell Me Anything is tender, raw, brutally honest boy meets girl story – about a boy who’s trying to be a man and a girl who doesn’t want to be rescued.  “Successfully, even rivetingly, comes to grips with the toll taken on a care - giver determined to save someone.” The Times

LaPelle’s Factory in association with LittleMighty presents

The Black Cat Thursday 16 November, 7pm Pay what you think 1 hour (16+ years) (Part of Literary Leicester 2017) Two performers dismember the process of adaptation by reimagining this macabre classic with the cheekiest of glints in their eyes. Together they take merciless liberties with the absent writer’s words – like a madman taking out a furious rage on a helpless pet. Suspended between the hilarious and the horrific, this show revels in the darkness that hides just under the surface. It’s all gravely good fun, but be warned: it will get catty. Meow. The DH Ensemble present

artists and all-round lovely people. They have worked with companies including the Royal Shakespeare Studio, The Roundhouse, the Yard Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, Northern Stage, and the Barbican. A Ship of Fools Theatre Company presents

Welcome to Paradise Friday 8 December, 7.30pm Pay what you think 1 hour (14+ years) Strap in for the Captain and Raoul’s hilarious, playful, anarchic, bouffon-clown rollercoaster ride to the darkest corners of Santa’s grotto which reveals the putrid mould under the tree. Ship of Fools bring their unique brand of theatre to the Attenborough Arts Centre for one night only. Expect danger, hilarity and horror in equal measure as they tapdance back and forth over the lines of decency.

Inspired by real events, this personal story follows a family finding their way through unfamiliar territory. A story about parents, sisters, and the complex love that binds families together. IMAGE: Kirsty Mealing: Cat Got My Tongue

Kirsty Mealing presents

Cat Got My Tongue (I Hope It Comes Back) Sunday 28 January, 7pm £6 / £5 1 hour (all ages welcome) (Part of DeStress Fest) A semi-autobiographical love story between a body and her elusive voice separated by Social Anxiety. Finding herself lost for words in a busy bar, a woman steps into very large shoes to get them back. The piece is an almost entirely wordless abstract representation of Mealing’s own experience with Generalised and Social Anxiety Disorder. The show features clowning inspired by the work of vaudeville and silent movie actors, with a notparticularly-discreet or unbiased favour towards Chaplin’s Tramp character. This piece was created in the hope of humanising mental health and empowering those who may sometimes feel overwhelmed by it (or particularly 16

frustrated by the head-clutching images that often represent it). But really it’s not solely about mental health: it really is a little love story between a girl and her voice. Naomh Cullen presents

I farted in Shavasana Friday 26 January, 7pm £6 / £5 1 hour (12+ years) (Part of DeStress Fest) This performance is an audience interactive piece in the form of a yoga class, whilst discussing anxiety and embarrassing stories. Naomh Cullen is attempting to cure her mental and physical ailments through any means necessary (apart from medicine or any real change in diet or lifestyle). Join her for a short easy breezy yoga class where she makes you feel better about any embarrassing story you have about yourself.

Performance and Professional Wrestling

Live British Wrestling: History and Resurgence

Monday 2 October, 4pm FREE 90 minutes (Part of Being Human Festival)

Sunday 19 November, 7pm FREE 2 hours (Part of Being Human Festival)

What is professional wrestling? Is it a sport, or theatre, or a soap opera, or dance, or a superhero comic? In October 2016 we published Performance and Professional Wrestling, a book that tried to answer some of these questions. This event invites professional wrestling fans to meet some of the contributors to this book and to share their own experiences of this form. Bring your lucha masks, spandex singlets and steel chairs for an afternoon of prowrestling chat!

In 1988, after its cancellation on ITV, it seemed that British Wrestling had died. Recently, however, there has begun an unlikely resurgence. British Wrestling now leads the world; shows sell out in minutes, local athletes are admired worldwide. This Being Human event charts the fall and rise of British Wrestling through a collection of artistic encounters – a training workshop, a discussion event, and, on Sunday, two wrestling matches, with responses from artists, scholars and fans.

Stories Around a Campfire Indoors Tuesday 17 October, 8pm £5 1 hour (10 + years) It’s October. The days are getting shorter. The nights are getting longer. It’s that time of year when darkness falls across the land, the midnight hour is close at hand, creatures crawl in search of blood to terrorize your neighbourhood. Or it should be, but with all the drinking and dressing up as slutty cats, who has the time to be scared anymore? Playwright Doug Deans and storyteller Matt Watts are doing something about that. They’ve written a show, just for Attenborough, just for Halloween. There will be a campfire, there will be marshmallows, there will be stories, and maybe, just maybe, there’ll be something else, lurking in the dark...

Juggling a multi-layered matrix of world music, neoclassical and jazz, Myriad is performed on a unique setup of piano and drums that blend an eclectic mix of sounds. Together, they create a myriad of musical dimensions. Be prepared to be taken on a wonderful journey!

Take part on our music courses and workshops. See our Creative Learning Guide for more details.

Saturday 28 October, 7.30pm Venue: Fraser Noble Hall £12 / £8, 90 minutes (14+ years) University of Leicester Orchestra Piano: Nicholas McCarthy Conductor: Paul Jenkins A unique, musical experience inspired by Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Infamous pianist Paul Wittgenstein commissioned Ravel to write him a concerto after he lost his right arm during the WWI. The assassin that triggered that conflict, Gavrilo Princip, was kept in shackles in prison, his withered arm tied up with piano wire. Unravelling narratives surround this piece of music and together they weave a true story that spans 100 years. Experience a deconstructed reorchestrated exploration of the legacy of war and the healing power of music to overcome personal tragedy. Commissioned by Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, Attenborough Arts Centre and Nottingham Lakeside Arts. Supported by Arts Council England.

Leicester Jazz House presents

Trish Clowes and Gareth Williams Thursday 11 January, 8pm £14 / £7 2 hours 30 minutes Multi-award winning saxophonist Trish Clowes returns to engage in a different kind of musical conversation with virtuoso pianist and 2013 British Jazz Awards winner, Gareth Williams. Aiming to bring generations and styles of musicians/ music together, the duo will be playing arrangements of standards plus originals by the two of them. Trish Clowes has made a great impact in the relatively short time she has been on the UK jazz scene, while Gareth Williams is one of the UK’s leading modern jazz pianists, having played with world-class artists Us3 through to Joe Lovano, Jerry Bergonzi and George Coleman.

Kindertotenlieder is a cycle of songs about the death of children. Mahler sets this serious and disturbing subject to some of the most beautiful and poignant music ever composed. This classical concert will open with the first performance of the Tralee Jane Suite by Leicester composer Anne Mee and close with the exhilarating ‘Classical Symphony’ by Prokofiev. Sunday 12 November, 7pm £6 / £5 1 hour (18+ years)

Thursday 7 December, 7pm £5 / £4 1 hour (16+ years)

‘This is sense?’ is a new physical theatre piece developed by Fuelled Dance Theatre. This work is an exploration of the different types of self, created through exploring the social politics of self-identity and the ongoing battles that everyone faces.

Phrases is an exploration of common sense, catchphrases and confusion alongside spontaneous dance. Fragmentation and confusion are embraced in an effort to form structure and get on with it. Lewys thinks this is like life in general.

Please note some of the language / themes may cause offence.

Founding member of arts collective Tetrad, associate artist at Attenborough Arts Centre and a Curve Theatre Breakthrough Artist, Lewys has worked with prominent international artists including Tino Sehgal, Frank Willens, Rosemary Lee and Florence Peake.

Kesha journeys through her impressions of living, travelling and journaling throughout the Indian subcontinent for her first self-choreographed work. Drawing from personal incidents and nomadic by nature, the body is used as a vehicle of data, persistently trying to weave and thread together memories through physical exploration. Kesha reflects on the constant changes we all experience from the dichotomy of physical and metaphysical space.
