If you took part in every single course, workshop and drop-in session advertised in this brochure you would be with us continuously for over a month. 37 and a half days to be precise. As we begin to celebrate our 20th year I’d like to appeal to those who put “I can’t” in front of any sentence when it comes to being creative. All of our programme is designed to be accessible to everyone with no formal qualifications required. So whether you feel well versed in Latin American dance, or you’re just curious to pick up a paintbrush, you should feel confident that the course, workshop or drop-in session will cater for you. Our programme is taught by practicing artists who remember how difficult it is to make a start, and who want to see you progress and enjoy your time with us. Everyone has it within themselves to be creative, you just have to give it a try. So I’m not asking for 37 and a half days of your time, I’m starting with just one. Show us what you’re up to in our programme through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and let us know what you’d like to see us host in the future too. If you’re not sure where to get started please talk to our Front of House team, they’ll be able to offer advice and answer questions you have on anything found in these pages. Painting & Drawing Botanical drawing and painting Fridays, 21 April – 26 May and 9 June – 14 July, 10am – 1pm £72 / £42 for 6 sessions TUTOR: Georgia Danvers This course is designed to take the student through the whole process of observing, drawing, colour studies, compositions and preparing to achieve a final painting of the chosen subject.
Portraits and figures Mondays, 24 April – 10 July (except 1 May and 29 May), 10am – 1pm £130 / £67 for 10 sessions TUTOR: Geoff Beasley A structured and innovative approach to drawing and painting the figure using a wide range of traditional and modern techniques.
Portrait in oils Wednesday 26 – Thursday 27 April, 10am – 4pm £65 / £40 TUTOR: Jane French This workshop is for those who want to confidently start using oil paint. The focus of this 2 day workshop will be on handling the medium as well as the depiction of tonal values to produce a striking portrait.
Investigating drawing Tuesdays, 2 May – 11 July (except 30 May), 7pm – 9pm £82 / £52 for 10 sessions TUTOR: Steph Knowles
For the curious, the adventurous, the out of practise and those who simply want more drawing in their lives. The emphasis is on investigation over outcome, broadening your approach to drawing through experiment and sheer inventiveness. No particular experience necessary.
Problem and criticism You can choose to start this course on 4 or 11 May. Thursdays, 4 May – 13 July and 11 May – 13 July, 11am – 12.30pm £52 / £27 for 6 sessions TUTOR: Diane Hall Join with other artists to develop your critical skills and become more confident in your ability to develop your own style. These friendly, supportive classes are devoted entirely to discussion and criticism of work done at home. The six sessions are based around a focus and specific creative problems set by the tutor. You will be required to work outside of the class using your own materials, resulting in a number of pieces using a variety of materials and approaches.

Blue in the story of art
Ryan Gander Curates the Arts Council Collection Saturday 25 February – Sunday 21 May FREE Attenborough Arts Centre brings a major new touring exhibition to Leicester which sees leading British artist Ryan Gander select work from Arts Council Collection’s world class national collection of modern and contemporary British art. This exhibition includes a major new commission ‘As old as time itself, slept alone’ by Ryan Gander presented as part of the exhibition. Night in the Museum brings together over 30 works by artists including Roger Hiorns, Henry Moore, Angela Bulloch and Wolfgang Tillmans. For this exhibition, Gander has made a selection of works from the Arts Council Collection’s nearly 8,000 works of British art in a range of media. The majority of these were acquired from young and emerging UK-based artists over the past 70 years.
Wednesday 5 April and Saturday 6 May, 10am – 3pm £21 / £13.50 TUTOR: Ellie Pridgeon This course will examine the use and function of the colour blue in Western art. Focusing on key artworks from the Roman, medieval and Renaissance periods, through to paintings produced by twentiethcentury artists such as Matisse, Kandinsky and Klein. We will consider the shifting symbolism and significance associated with the colour in the story of art.

Attenborough Forum Debates & Lectures The Attenborough Forum is a space for anyone interested in critical discussion, art form development, continuing professional development, research and symposia, including artist talks.
Curating the Arts Council Collection Thursday 27 April, 6pm – 7.30pm FREE, booking advised Join a panel of curators, artists and enthusiasts for a thought-provoking discussion about contemporary art and how the Arts Council Collection has been curated by Ryan Gander for ‘Night in the Museum’. For anyone with an interest in jazz and reasonable proficiency on a musical instrument. To take full part in all aspects of the course you will need to read music or chord symbols, but those who play by ear are also welcome.

Guitar playing Wednesdays, 3 May – 12 July (except 31 May) £58 for 10 sessions TUTOR: Ketan Patel Learn in a friendly group setting with a strong emphasis on ensemble playing. No previous musical knowledge is required for either of the beginners’ level courses. Acoustic guitar course: You will need to bring a guitar plectrum and preferably a steel strung guitar. The improver’s course is suitable for players with approximately 12 months experience including an understanding of basic rhythms in music notation. Classical guitar course: You will need to bring your own nylon strung guitar, footstool and course book – please ask us for details. The improver’s level is suitable for players with approximately two years’ experience who can already read music.
