The inspiration continues… University of Leicester

Lord Attenborough Maiden Speech to the House of Lords, 1994

Attenborough Arts Centre’s work is inspired by Richard Attenborough, a world leading filmmaker, acclaimed actor, philanthropist and lifelong patron of the arts. Lord Attenborough was an inspirational talent and pioneering thinker, our founding

patron and a hands-on man who helped establish our arts centre. Handing the patronage to his son Michael, we continue to follow Richard’s vision and his legacy striving to include everyone in great art, culture and learning.

“The arts are not a prerequisite of the privileged few. The arts are for everyone – and failure to include everyone diminishes us all”

Welcome to our exciting programme in our brand new and expanded arts centre! Make a day of our events, exhibitions and activities. Come and spend some quality time with us! We are delighted to be welcoming David Attenborough to cut the ribbon on our new gallery on Friday 29 January, and help us celebrate this milestone in our ambition to be a dynamic cultural hub for inclusive arts. Our next exhibitions are committed to socially engaged arts practice. Internationally acclaimed artists Lucy + Jorge Orta (p. 6) will be presenting brand new work about climate change and migration. We will then be hosting the International Small Print exhibition (p. 8) with our partner Leicester Print Workshop, with a range of work for sale in our newly expanded Shop (p. 9). Our former gallery space has re-launched as the Balcony Gallery dedicated to local professional artists.

I’m really excited to announce a selection of shows on offer on a pay what you think basis, which will really open up our exciting performance programme to everyone: Don’t miss this opportunity to try something new for this season only. Whether you want to bring the children to a brilliant puppetry opera (Krazy Kat, p. 19), a musical journey through contemporary dance (Lucy Suggate, p. 30) or want to try unique new theatre sitting in darkness (Goat and Monkey, p. 14), there is something across the programme that is accessible to everyone. Our shows for the Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival have been selected by our guest programmer Dan Nicholas, bringing to us some great upcoming talent. You can still catch Lewys Holt’s sell out Of, Or At A Fairly Low Temperature on February (p. 11).

Don’t miss our newly refurbished café, specially designed to meet family needs, offering a space to relax, meet friends or work on your new script!

Lastly I’d just like to mention Louise White (p. 14) and Priya Mistry (p. 15) who have been developing two shows with support from us, Zoo Indigo (p. 16) and PAD productions (p. 21) who will be coming to us through our In Good Company partnership, and of course Tetrad (p. 16) who’ll be rounding off our bumper programme with two double bills at the end of July (p. 17).

NEW EXHIBIT ION

Lucy + Jorge Orta Saturday 30 January – Sunday 24 April FREE The internationally acclaimed Lucy + Jorge Orta produce artwork that questions the social and ecological sustainability of our planet. Their work over the last two decades employs diverse media like drawing, sculpture, installation, couture, painting, silkscreen, photography, video and light, staged interventions and performances. Lucy + Jorge Orta’s practice is driven by extensive research into the forces shaping our environment: the availability of food and water, the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and subsequent species loss, and global climate change.

This new solo exhibition brings together artwork relating to Lucy + Jorge Orta’s ongoing concern with human migration, escape and survival from environmental and political catastrophe. It includes many of their characteristic social sculptures, assemblages of functional objects such as customised buoyancy aids, water flasks, and individually made sleeping bags. The exhibition will also premier a brand new, immersive audio installation, entitled ‘Symphony for Absent Wildlife’, which will occupy Gallery 2.

Unfortunately he isn’t really much of a human being, he’s just a bloody clown. Award winning Nottingham company Fowl Humour’s Hap (Less One) is a unique hour long, free-for-all in physical comedy and clowning for childish adults, as we learn to find humour in a fool’s tragedy. Kirsty Munro and upcoming comedians present

Thursday 11 February, 8.30pm £5 45 minutes (16+) How much denim do I wear? How many beards do I grow? Does my mum think I’m ‘cool’? Is there literally anything else that matters in life? Are acronyms still ‘in’? Examining what is meant by being ‘cool’, the performance mixes contemporary dance with storytelling and comedy to question what is ‘cool’ these days. Lewys will play music, dance, play dress up, improvise and talk through some issues. Personas will shift, activities will blur and insecurities will be illuminated. This semi-autobiographical show makes Lewys consider the things that are most important to him: to be ‘cool’ or to be himself, he will ask you to consider the same thing.

No Woman’s Land is a visual and physical performance with innovative video design. It explores the real story of a mother’s migration after World War II, re-walking her steps across borders. Ildiko’s grandmother, expelled from her home in 1945, walked 350km through the fractured landscape of Europe with her two young children and all her belongings dragged in a cart. In 2015, Ildiko and Rosie retraced her footsteps, crossing borders, climbing fences, bleeding, crying, blistering, and carrying their flat pack children. No Woman’s Land is a humorous and moving stagger through landscapes of past and present stories.

Kate Williams: Four plus three Friday 10 June, 8pm Venue: Fraser Noble Hall £14 / £5 NUS only 2 hours 30 minutes Pianist and composer Kate Williams brings together two worlds in this exciting collaboration between her trio and the Guastalla string quartet. Williams makes use of the varied palette of sounds in the jazz trio and string quartet, contrasting improvised and notated sounds in an integrated ensemble that breathes new life into music by Cole Porter, Bill Evans, Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as performing original compositions.

Stan Sulzmann & Nikki Iles Friday 1 July, 8pm £12 / £5 NUS only 2 hours 30 minutes To followers of the British jazz scene, saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and pianist Nikki Iles need little introduction, with innumerable credits to both of their names. In this intimate duo setting, the great musical depth they both demonstrate is brought to the fore.

University of Leicester Sinfonia Venue: Fraser Noble Hall £10 / £8 / £3 2 hours Saturday 27 February, 7.30pm Elizabeth Medrow - leader Michael Sackin - conductor Weber Overture: Peter Schmoll Schumann Symphony No 3 in E flat major (Rhenish) Beethoven Symphony No 6 in F major (Pastoral) A concert of historical German attitudes to landscapes, a matter rich in folklore, epitomised by two well-known and much loved symphonies, Schumann’s Rhenish and Beethoven’s Pastoral. The Schumann celebrates the ancient city of Cologne and its cathedral with great dignity, and the Beethoven is all about the countryside. The concert begins with a rarely heard overture by Weber, written when he was 15 and a fully accomplished piece. Weber’s music is steeped in German folklore. Saturday 18 June, 7.30pm Elizabeth Medrow - leader Michael Sackin - conductor Abigail Johnson - piano Mozart Adagio and Fugue in C minor, K.546 Mozart Piano Concerto No 25 in C major, K.503 Mozart Symphony No 41 in C major (Jupiter) Three giant works of Mozart, unified by the common key of C, and centred on one of his many stunning piano concertos, in which the dialogue between solo pianist

and sections of the orchestra seems more eloquent than any speech. In the Adagio and Fugue he out-baroques most of his Baroque predecessors, and he does it again in the staggering, contrapuntal finale of the Jupiter Symphony. We are delighted to welcome Abigail Johnson back, as our wonderful piano soloist.

Knighton Chamber Orchestra Venue: Fraser Noble Hall £10 / £8 / £3 2 hours Saturday 5 March, 7.30pm Weber Clarinet Concerto No 2 Haydn Symphony 102 Prokofiev Violin concerto No 2 We are pleased to welcome back two great soloists to Leicester. Violinist Soh Yon Kim plays a truly wonderful work, the Prokofiev Violin concerto No 2. Local clarinettist Christine Taylor is delighted to present the Weber Clarinet Concerto No 2. Knighton Chamber Orchestra will also play a truly happy classical piece by Haydn.

Saturday 25 June, 7.30pm Rossini Overture Barber of Seville Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2 Mozart Jupiter Symphony We are thrilled to have local teenager piano virtuoso Moritz Wagner joining us to play the delightful Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2. The sparkling overture Barber of Seville by Rossini and the wonderful Jupiter Symphony by Mozart complement this orchestral feast. 25

Dance Improvisation: the estranged cousin

Friday 4 March, 6.30pm and 8.30pm £10 / £6 / £5 45 minutes (14+) Fill in the — is a troubling yet ordinarily sassy movement lecture, which shifts through the oddities of managing time, attempting to tackle the connections between perceptions of time and the fragility of relationships. Through a chaotic text of intimate contemplation, interruption and sheer pointlessness, the performer speaks of coming, going and shifting through in-between moments; hoping to find a sense of what makes one tick. 28

Saturday 12 March, 11am - 7pm FREE but booking essential on www.dance4.co.uk 18+ This one-day symposium of provocations and performances will address a range of issues concerning the status and perception of contemporary dance improvisation from the perspectives of artist and producer, including the reluctance to programme within mid-scale venues and risky aspects of improvised work. The day includes a keynote presentation from American scholar and dance artist Kent De Spain,

contributions by Sally Doughty and Vida Midgelow, and offers an open space for dialogue and sharing. Presented by Dance4 in partnership Sally Doughty. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and De Montfort University

Dan Daw: Autograph Thursday 12 May, 7.30pm £10 / £8 / £5 1 hour Choreographed by Graham Adey and performed by Dan Daw, On One Condition is a bare bones, stripped back look at the world we live in. Pilgrim Saturday 11 June, 8pm Pay what you think 1 hour Pilgrim is a physical journey through the mystical sound scores created by Electronic Musician James Holden, a reminder of the ancient and enduring kinship between dance and music and the deeply transformative qualities of both. The work is haunted by remnants of English folk heritage and pagan sensibilities shifting between hypnotic and euphoric states. Lucy Suggate’s physical vocabulary is irreverent and eclectic; she guides us through minimal sophistication towards Acid House and arduous repetition, resulting in a variety of perceptual and physical shifts. Coaxed along by Holden’s beguiling and epic rhythms she is constantly questioning and reminding us of why we dance.
