The Embraer Advantage 34º Edition - Q3 2016

Page 1

IS GOOD EVER GOOD ENOUGH? If an Embraer executive jet feels like nothing you’ve experienced before, that’s because there was nothing like it before. In short, our executive aircraft are the tangible manifestation of our culture of constant improvement and unconventional thinking. You’ll notice it in the details. Feel it in ergonomics. And hear it in cabins that maintain amazing levels of quiet at every altitude. We’re not for those who are comfortable with the status quo—but rather, for those who consider that the starting point.

Rethink Convention.

GREETINGS FROM MARCO TULIO

My friends, Welcome to the second Embraer Advantage of 2016. I am very pleased to start this new edition sharing some phenomenal news with you: For the first time in our company’s history, we were ranked No. 1 in both the Aviation International News and Pro Pilot Magazine 2016 Product Support Surveys. In the AIN survey, we soared solo to the top position, earning our highest-ever score, a combined overall average of 8.4 out of 10 for newer and preflown aircraft. It was the second year in a row that Embraer Executive Jets secured first place in Pro Pilot Magazine’s Corporate Aircraft Product Support Survey. Embraer’s 8.58 overall score was the highest among manufacturers in the 26-year history of Pro Pilot’s survey, further reflecting our commitment to providing unsurpassed customer support. We also achieved several other important milestones during the past few months: Flexjet’s midsize Legacy 500 – Embraer’s 1,000th business jet delivery – demonstrated its steep approach capability at London City Airport in May, completing the final step in the certification process to operate at one of the world’s most technically difficult airports. A few days later, we were thrilled to unveil the innovative upper tech panel on our revolutionary Legacy 450 and Legacy 500. The backlit touchscreen overhead panel is a wonderful addition for our passengers, allowing them to view detailed flight status information at a glance and access cabin controls. And finally, on June 2, I joined Florida’s governor, along with many other dignitaries and Embraer officials, in Melbourne, Florida, to celebrate the opening of our expanded assembly facility, where the Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 will be built alongside the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300. Work is underway on the first Melbourne-made Legacy 450, which is scheduled to be delivered in December. As always, at Embraer Executive Jets we are excited as we continually rethink convention in all we do.

Enjoy the issue.

A touch more phenomenal: Embraer introduces the Phenom 100 EV Entry-level jet’s improvements include greater speed, faster climb, and new avionics

A new evolution arrived in July when Embraer Executive Jets introduced a series of significant improvements to the entrylevel Phenom 100 at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The evolved Phenom 100 will enter the market in the first half of 2017. Its new features include: • Modified engines that offer more speed and up to 15 percent greater thrust at hot-and-high airports, which equates to more range and a faster time to initial cruise altitude. The result is a significantly improved range from some of the world’s most challenging airports. • A new avionics suite – the state-of-the-art Prodigy Touch, based on Garmin’s G3000 – that improves situational benefits with three large high-resolution touchscreen displays and more capable weather radar.

• Greater passenger comfort with a redesigned floor sill, featuring a straight line design to increase the aisle area, along with relocated power outlets with USB chargers. The clean-sheet Phenom 100 continues to offer a remarkably comfortable largest-in-class cabin, along with the largest baggage compartment and windows in its segment, providing abundant natural light. And even with its performance enhancements, the Phenom 100’s engines still offer the same low, best-inclass operating and maintenance costs that made the aircraft so desirable when it entered service in 2008.

Innovative new cabin feature added to Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 Touchscreen overhead panel gives passengers flight information and access to lighting controls

Embraer Executive Jets has unveiled an innovative new cabin management feature – the upper tech panel – on its revolutionary Legacy 450 and Legacy 500. The passenger-friendly backlit touchscreen overhead panel, which is unique to Embraer, provides flight status information, ambient lighting and access to cabin controls. The panel shows, at a glance, how far the aircraft has traveled on a trip, so passengers don’t have to interrupt their activities to access the moving map. The screen also provides time to arrival, current times at departure and destination locations and altitude information. Additionally,

“ 07

the panel offers LED halo mood lights and overhead touchscreen access to lighting controls. “This new feature demonstrates Embraer’s approach to the use of technology in interior design, in that it is both simple to use and disappears when not needed,” said Jay Beever, Senior Vice President of Interior Design, Embraer Executive Jets. “We firmly believe the purpose of technology is to serve the user. The upper tech panel does just that by detecting passenger hand proximity and bringing a number of cabin management options directly to one’s fingertips.”

The upper tech panel is just one example of how the passenger is at the nucleus of the design of the revolutionary Legacy 450 and Legacy 500.” Jay Beever, Senior Vice President of Interior Design, Embraer Executive Jets.

Legacy 500 approved for steep approach in London City Midsize aircraft receives certification to operate at challenging airport Flexjet’s Legacy 500 by Embraer landed at London City Airport for the first time in May, demonstrating its steep approach capability and completing the final step in the certification process to operate at one of the world’s most technically challenging airports. The midsize Legacy 500, which was delivered to Flexjet in April, is the 1,000th business jet built by Embraer. Marco Tulio Pellegrini, President and CEO of Embraer Executive Jets, and Raymond Jones, Flexjet’s managing director of international business, were on board the maiden flight into London City, which is near London’s financial districts. The ability to operate at London City offers travelers much easier access to the city than from other London airports. “The Legacy 500 has already proven its remarkable field performance and now is able to fly in and out of London City Airport, reaching destinations as far as Riyadh, Saudi Arabia or Gander, Canada,” Pellegrini said.

“This new operational capability for London’s financial district, one of Europe’s major business aviation hubs, will offer our customers additional flexibility in the best-inclass midsize jet.” A special certification is required for every aircraft that operates at London City because of its short runway, steep approach, departure angle, and other operational controls. The Legacy 500 completed a comprehensive flight-test campaign at London City, including takeoffs and steep approach landings, to meet the airport’s strict technical and environmental performance standards. The Legacy 500 is the fastest midsize jet in the world and the first in its class featuring digital flight controls with full fly-by-wire.

Embraer begins Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 production in Melbourne Four business jets will now be manufactured at expanded facility

Florida’s governor, along with numerous local, state and federal dignitaries, were on hand in Melbourne for the June 2 ribbon-cutting of Embraer Executive Jets’ expanded assembly facility, where production has begun on the cutting-edge Legacy 450 and Legacy 500. Governor Rick Scott, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, U.S. Congressman Bill Posey, Brevard County and Melbourne officials celebrated the opening with Embraer leaders and employees inside the facility, which has doubled in size to 149,000 square feet. The Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 will now be assembled alongside the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300, which have been manufactured at the Melbourne facility since 2011. More than 170 Phenom jets have been assembled and delivered in Melbourne, and as of July 1, all Phenom 100 and 300 final assembly takes place there. Meanwhile, other facilities remain under construction in Melbourne, including a Legacy 450/500 paint facility and a

delivery center for the two aircraft. The two-bay paint facility and two-bay delivery center are scheduled to open in October and December, respectively, according to Phil Krull, Embraer Executive Jets’ managing director. Together, the new buildings will add 236,000 square feet to Embraer’s existing 213,000-square-foot campus at OrlandoMelbourne International Airport. Embraer plans to add 600 new employees to its almost 600-member workforce in the Melbourne area, ramping up hiring through 2020. The mid-light Legacy 450 and midsize Legacy 500 are the fastest jets in their respective categories and the only aircraft in their classes featuring digital flight controls with full fly-bywire. Both jets have an elegantly appointed largest-in-class 6-foot-tall cabin with a flat floor. The first Legacy 450 produced in Melbourne is scheduled to be delivered in mid-December, Krull said.

EMBRAER ADVANTAGE / CUSTOMER’S VIEW

Embraer Legacy 600 is first business jet to enter SILC fleet Philip Queffelec is chairman of Sparfell Aviation Technologies, holding company of Sparfell & Partners (based in Geneva, Switzerland) and Sparfell International Lease Corporation (SILC, based in Dublin, Ireland). SILC is an aircraft leasing company and recently took delivery of its first business jet, a preflown Legacy 600 by Embraer.

How did you learn about the Legacy 600 and how did you arrive at the conclusion that it was the right aircraft for your company? My father was in aviation, and I had been the European representative for McDonnell Douglas for quite some time prior to the merger. I know commercial aircraft and Embraer quite well due to how many factories you operate around the world. Embraer is a leader in commercial aviation, which is clear when you look at aircraft like the Legacy. They are incredibly advanced machines and very reliable, which makes maintenance and operations a lot easier. It seemed like a natural fit for me when I chose this aircraft. What do you like the most about the Legacy 600? First and foremost, it’s a beautiful aircraft. The entire cabin experience is pleasant due to the three sections, making it comfortable for 10 to 12 passengers. The spacious luggage compartment is another asset to the aircraft, and the lavatories are very comfortable. For the work that we do, it’s a really great aircraft. Do you have any expectations that were exceeded by our customer support team? I’ve been to both Melbourne and to Bradley, Connecticut and was very impressed by the staff in both locations. The entire team is very professional and sensitive to the needs of their customers, which is essential when dealing with a product like Embraer’s. You have to have a team you can trust and that will support you through every step along the way. I really was impressed by the attention to detail and the motivation of both of the teams – it was great working with them. Do you have a story or anything you’d like to share with us about your experience so far? I’m very impressed with Embraer’s achievements within such a short time. Looking back 16 years ago to when you just were getting started to the products you offer today – it’s incredible. You have the Phenom 100 and 300, both new products with completely new technology, both really great aircraft. Then there are the Legacy 450 and 500 – fantastic machines with fly-by-wire

technology. And of course, the Legacy 650 and the Lineage 1000 round off the offering. In just 16 years, Embraer has created an impressive line of products. As a professional in aviation, I am genuinely astounded by your progress. Can you share your experience with Embraer Executive Jets’ Preflown Department? The Preflown Department team looked out for me as if I were buying a brand-new aircraft. I was really surprised by this. José Costas and Breno Correa were the first people I spoke with from Embraer Executive Jets and their efficiency and friendly attitude reflected the great image of the company. The teams in both Melbourne and Bradley were very supportive throughout the entire process, ensuring a smooth delivery. Based on your personal experience, what are the advantages of buying a preflown aircraft from the original manufacturer? You have a guarantee in both the status and quality of the aircraft, as the manufacturer wants to maintain a long-term relationship with buyers. In my case, the aircraft required modifications to the avionics as well as refurbishment and re-painting, and it was comforting to know that Embraer contracted each step directly with the providers.

EMBRAER ADVANTAGE / CUSTOMER’S STORY

Friendship forged over shared passion for aviation It was a chilly but sunny May morning in Geneva on the second day of EBACE – the most important event for the European business aviation community. As I walked over to Philip Queffelec’s aircraft for our interview, I reviewed all the questions in my head to make sure I was ready. As I arrived at his Embraer Legacy 600, a very elegant, charming man smiled at me while introducing himself. As we walked into his aircraft and sat down, the conversation flowed naturally while the camera equipment and microphones were being set up and tested. We started talking about Embraer and Brazil and how much he enjoyed his visits there. It was a great surprise when he mentioned he had visited the country many times because of his good friend, Ayrton Senna. The renowned Formula One race-car driver remains one of the biggest stars Brazil has ever had and is well known and admired all over the world. Mr. Queffelec’s stories of their friendship were so heart warming that I decided it would be great to share them with our readers. Luciana Meroni de Souza Fujiura

Queffelec reflects on close friendship with Ayrton Senna Swiss businessman Philip Queffelec, a longtime car-racing aficionado, recently shared some fond recollections of his close friendship with Ayrton Senna, the late Brazilian race-car driver who won three Formula One world championships before he passed away in 1994. Queffelec, chairman of Sparfell Aviation Technologies, recalled the unforgettable day he spent with Senna after the two met for the first time during the Paris Air Show. With a shared passion for flying helicopters, the two became close friends, occasionally flying together when Senna was in Europe for Grand Prix races or during Queffelec’s visits to Brazil, where he watched his famous friend solidify his reputation as one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time. Queffelec said he took advantage of every “occasion to watch a Formula One Grand Prix… I saw Ayrton at different Grand Prix, like in Rio… I will always remember this Grand Prix in Jacarepagua (Rio de Janeiro), where I was in the public tribune with my father. Each time Ayrton arrived at the curb entering the long straight line, the entire crowd was standing up, chanting, ‘Ayrton’! Ayrton! Ayrton! And as soon as he disappeared, ‘Senna’! Senna! Senna! The atmosphere was incredible. He was a god.” Senna also displayed formidable skills in the cockpit of a helicopter. Although Senna was a widely acclaimed racing legend adored by many, he was unassuming away from the limelight.

Ayrton was the most charming man I ever met. He was so kind and gentle in ordinary life. He was so simple… We showed kindness and respect, he knew I wouldn’t use him for my business. I had strong and genuine admiration for him, which he understood.“

Queffelec said he learned some valuable, enduring lessons through his friendship with Senna. “His professionalism and dedication for the job was amazing. I tried to always keep that in mind for the development of my group. Every detail must be under control.”

Life is very fragile, and you must live every day as if it was the last. When you are blessed by God for having a fantastic passion, don’t compromise; just be at 100%. Ayrton was always above.”

Ultimately, Senna left a lasting legacy for both the racing world and his country, Queffelec said. He was showing the way to succeed, with courage, persistence and honesty. His faith and his consideration for people were strong. He was indeed a ‘lord.’
