CALL FOR PROJECTS TOPIAS Deadline for the call for projects: 19th April 2013

2 MODALITIES SHARE-IT + BUILD-IT

PRESENTATION OF EME3 Eme3 was born in 1999 in response to the need to find a space for architects, urbanists and artist from different disciplines, where they could meet and present innovative and unconventional projects that went beyond common trends in urban planning and construction. It was the volumetric concept, the measure unit in cubic meters that gave it the name.

together the new producers of emergent architectures in a space for experimentation, display and debate. Eme3 generates projects that take shape in different formats (installations, urban projects, workshops, lectures, discussions and audiovisual projections) and locations, through the continuous program, eme3_on, as well as the annual encounter, eme3_festival.

Although the socials parameters and context have greatly changed since then, eme3 still operates as an opportunity and platform for the presentation and exchange of ideas.

We are opening the period for the submission of projects to take part in the 8th edition of eme3 Festival to be held in Barcelona from June 27th to 30th at Fabra y Coats (see annex I) while the exposition will remain open until July 30th with a program of activities.

Eme3 has become a forum and facilitator for interaction and a shuttle of proposals that in a retrospective sense can be fully defined as avantgarde architecture. With architecture as the starting point, and the combination of both art and design, eme3 brings

2

AS A THINK-TANK, EME3 PROVIDES THE PARTICIPANT WITH A PHYSICAL AND INTERACTIVE SPACE TO INTERACT AND SHARE HIS IDEAS, AS WELL AS THE POSSIBILITY FOR THE VISITOR TO DISCOVER A DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURE YET CLOSE TO THE REAL AND CURRENT PROBLEMS IN SOCIETY, BRINGING AN OPTIMISTIC PERSPECTIVE.

EME3_CONTEXT The Fabra i Coats enclosure offers several buildings and outdoor spaces, many of which are currently unused due to conjectural context. We believe it is appropriate to support the activation of this unique space in Barcelona, through the revitalization of three spaces: a disused factory will host the exhibition part of the “share-it”, the outdoor patio (eme3_plaza) will be the place for the “build-it”, and part of the central factory will host the dynamics parts of the “share-it” (debates, talks, etc.). Thus, by one hand the container is positioned as an coherent example of eme3’s discursive line and by the other hand we contribute to the neighbourhood’s life, bringing an area of culture and leisure to enjoy a summer in the city with family and friends.

PRESENTATION OF THE CALL FOR PROJECTS Eme3 has been defined as an “International Architecture Festival”. However this title could limit our work, which in fact goes far beyond. Festival because the format are a few days of meeting and exchange – with some festive moments – but more than this it is the result of a crop of reflections and interchanges related to relevant social and cultural themes, which actually are constantly changing. Architecture, although we could define it as the “architectural practice” thus a lot of architects coming are presenting nonarchitecture, and a lot of participants which are not architect come to feed the thematic with their specific visions. The world that best join us is International, since we believe it is essential to open the range of proposals to a wide variety of contexts: from villages to megacities, from countries in development to countries which apparently present a “lack” of problems, from contexts of crisis regarding economy, politic, demography,

climate, society, culture, etc. In any of these scenarios, the similarities in the strategies to respond to such problems may surprise us, and the variety of point of views can enrich us. Regarding the content of the projects to be presented, we are not expecting renders, plans, structure calculation, urban and works planning… What we are really interested in are the persons, as well as the relations with their environment, their professional activities, needs and emotions… Then, why this definition of “International Architecture Festival”? because we did not find a better one for the thinking line we have been developing since the beginnings. Eme3 has been involved with topics related to citizen participation, selfmanagement, collective economy, bottom-up processes, as well as the reuse of abandoned spaces and buildings, DIY, open-source systems, etc. In such situations, the professional

plays the role of a mediator who develops projects which are present in the collective mind, and requires a catalyst to materialize the projects. When we see -from Spain- the status of the so-called capitalist system, when we think about Paul Ehrlich’s theories about the likely fall of our civilization (in the same way that all great civilizations fell) we hope that society will give the step necessary for the paradigm shift. In the past, eme3 has seen isolated initiatives that help us demonstrate that other models are possible. This year we have the feeling of an expansion of these topics, according to the interest shown by the press and the many exhibitions and encounters underway. In fact, we could define as symptoms of the evolution some examples such as the explosion of crowfunding as a response through the selfmanagement of associations united to improve their life environment, also as a viable architectural way out for an endangered profession today. Another example is the growing interest in the participative processes

5

both from the political and private sectors. With this vision we are getting closer to the step from utopias to reality. What we call TOPIAS.

PRESENTATION OF THE CALL FOR PROJECTS In our next 8th edition we intend to analyze the following subjects: • New uses for urban public space: from self-management, empowerment and projects of collaboration. • Housing in crisis situation (politic, economic, environmental, demographic): solutions to evictions, to family regrouping in developed countries, analysis of temporary uses of non-used spaces, solutions for emergency housing. • Evolution of the working space: co-working as a space-model and new working and collaboration methods. Network communication helps us to share the good praxis. Generalizing these practices has several stages: • Establish a legal recognized framework: analyzing the new financial association of interchange and, for example, giving value to the concept of generating welfare in society, etc. • Support education by introducing before mentioned new concepts in universities. • Convey communication and awareness to the public through the media, social networks and creation

of open spaces accessible to all. Not only in big cities but also in medium small or isolated communities with less resources. • Transmit this vision with empathy and trust, in order to observe, receive and project in an open-minded and sensitive way. By analyzing, debating, proving, making mistakes and sharing we will achieve that the public intelligence shows that utopia can become a reality. If we are able to transmit this idea to someone not in this field, through the proposals presented in this 8th edition, we are achieving in some way the objective of eme3.

CALL FOR PROJECTS OBJECTIVES ACCORDING THE EME3 PHILOSOPHY TO PROVIDE EVERY YEAR VISIBILITY TO INNOVATIVE PROPOSALS, WE LAUNCH A CALL FOR PROJECTS ALREADY COMPLETE OR IN PROGRESS IN LINE WITH THE 2013’S TOPIC, TOPIAS, WHICH CAN BE PRESENTED IN THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS AND FORMATS:

SHARE-IT! It aims to show both realized and to-be-realized projects, in the format of a panel, a small scale prototype, a video, web and interactive application or any other volumetric format that may fit in 2x2x2m (see annex) and will be produced and installed by the participant. Proposals are also accepted as workshops or actions. The originality of the proposals and the presentation will be an added value for the selection criteria; therefore we make a call to the creativity and inventing capacity of the participants. We will appreciate that the presentation doesn’t only focus on the result, but also on the process, parameters and evolutions of the project. We invite participants to mix the above mentioned different format presentations. Eme3 will be in charge of producing the material in a printed format, whereas the participating team will produce all the other materials.

7

BUILD-IT! We are opening a call for proposals to use the court of Fabra y Coats (see attached plan) called eme3_ Plaza The aim of the build-it section is to create a space, like an urban activator, that serves as a container for different activities during the summer. A cultural program will be organized during the Festival, also in July, to be defined with the users of eme3_Plaza (neighbors, cultural associations, collectives already acting in the creation factory in Fabra y Coats.) The space eme3_Plaza could for instance consider (to be considered only as examples): • bar and terrace zone • stage for an open air cinema, performances, concerts, debates. • urban garden • small “wet” area with minipool (maximum 30 cm of depth), humidifiers It should be hand-built over a

period of 1 to 2 weeks by a team of volunteers. Eme3 will provide basic tools and will support the realization of the project with a maximum amount of 3.000 euros given in the form of materials, understanding that any cost surpassing this budget shall be on the participants account. The winning participant may bring supplementary materials coming from reused materials or donations.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE APPLICANTS: WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

To the call for projects eme3 invites to participate architects, designers, trans- disciplinary groups, artists and other professionals or citizen who have a proactive attitude when approaching inherent problems to contemporary cities and architecture, understanding that the necessities of the actual metropolis go beyond a merely buildable approach. A same team can apply to the build-it and to the share-it section.

WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS CAN PARTICIPATE We are searching for projects that are product of a critical reflection to reality, with an eye on the political, economic and social context. These projects may address issues that revolve around society, ecology, politics, the transmission of knowledge or even the own architectural and urbanistic discipline. There is no specific format that defines the type of proposals, therefore publications, strategies and systems of work, video installation, prototypes of building materials; artifacts, mappings and/or architectural and urban projects are accepted.
