DYSTOPIAN STORIES EMER MARTIN TEACHER

When Thomas More wrote his satirical fiction novel, Utopia, in the 16th Century about the creation of a perfect society, he unwittingly spawned a new genre. Dystopias are not entirely futuristic; they actually reflect the concerns of the times in which they are created. From Orwell’s 1984 to Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the common thread in all dystopias is that human ideas should never be propagated at the expense of living beings, and mass surveillance and uniformity inevitably lead to totalitarianism.

This book was designed by the talented Fremont High School seniors as the culmination of their dystopian literature unit. Their task was to imagine their own dystopian world and create a storyboard that would represent the key plot points of a fictional narrative.

Ava’s dad, a politician, is executed for procreating with a slacker. Evidence is found that has a “Slacker” daughter. Ava is banished into the Lei Krumm (the slumps), at lowest clearance level for sharing “invalid blood.” Now burdened with a 1,000,000 life sentence, Ava is forced to live as a Slacker. (Backlighting with contrast, Medium Close Up Shot)

Ava, who was privileged enough to be born as a citizen, is now experiencing life at Lei Krumm. As a Slacker, Ava is treated unfairly and is scorned by Citizens for “being a drain on resources.” A slacker’s life is restricted by strict laws. To clear her sentence she must risk her life by participating in the Con’s Army (Motivated lighting with Contrast, Low-angle Shot)

Ava’s initial view of Slackers begins to change as she realizes, with the help of her half-sister, Alina, that the people there are treated unfairly. Originally, as an ex-Citizen, she saw herself above them, and that they were lazy criminals who drained society’s resources. But she soon realizes that every(Backlighting, Close Up Shot)

A Con war begins when their Con is attacked by a hostile army. In contrast to their Con, the enemy has much more technologically advanced weaponry and war machines. Their Con is in chaos, and several sectors are being attacked all at once. The government declares that all slackers must fight against this foreign opposition and Ava and Alina find themselves in the midst of a brutal battle. (Unmotivated lighting , Medium long shot,

Ava and Alina try to fight against the intruders. Despite their disadvantage, the fight against the intruders seem to be going well. Suddenly, reinforcements come with stronger war machines and the battle begins to go downhill. Alina becomes terribly injured and Ava has lost her will to fight.

Upon being approached by enemy soldiers, Ava braces herself for death, but instead is aided by them. It is revealed that the intruders were actually from a foreign haven called Neustare, who chose to lead their society differently from the Cons. Several slackers who were lucky enough escape the Con found refuge there, and are here to destroy the oppressive government and free the people. Ava joins forces with them on their mission.

(Motivated lighting, Long shot)

Ava and Neustare successfully destroy the oppressive government and begin to rebuild the con from the ground up for the better.

CP-IN

With increasing racial and gender discrimination and inequality, the government decided to eliminate any physical differences between people. All human beings now look the exact same. There is no gender (everyone is the same gender - there is only one) or race. The feminist lens applies to this society, because there is only one gender and therefore no inequality. The critical race theory also applies, as there is no race and no inequality or discrimination. Daily life is the same as our world today, except there is no discrimination, microaggressions, prejudice, inequality, or bullying. Everyone looks the same, and is therefore treated equally. People befriend others based on personality, rather than appearance. Babies are created in machines, all looking the same. Any baby born “defected” is immediately killed. Any adult that changes their physical appearance (scars, burns, etc.) is immediately killed as well. The government is trying to rid the world of hate, discrimination, and prejudice. By killing anyone with differences, the government believes that they are protecting those people from the discrimination that they would have faced. In this society, equality and justice are highly valued and preferred over individuality. People who are the same benefit from this uniform society. People who are born different, “defected” or get a differentiating mark lose out. They may describe this world as unfair, or lacking individuality. Many of these people do not want to die, and may try to resist it, but are told that it is something that has to be done to keep the society intact. People in this society are aware that the government is killing people. However, they believe that it is good, as it protects them from any inequality. Everyone believes that killing deformed people is justified because it will prevent them from being bullied in the future. They see it as an act of mercy, as does the government. People in society are not fully aware of the extent of these killings, and have never witnessed them. Those who are being killed just want to be accepted as they are, instead of having to die. They want the government to teach people to accept differences instead of get rid of or denying them.

Description of The World

Montonous, once known as the United States, is a society run by the Monotonous government, a government notorious for eliminating anyone who stands against their idea of a perfect society. This perfect society revolves around innovation and science, nothing else. Any form of creativity and individualism is eliminated. These forms of creativity and individualism include any type of artwork, any type of music and any type of fictitious work of literature. Essentially, anything that does not hold any scientific value was destroyed. The government of Montonous threatens its citizens with death by execution so that none of them ever do anything creative. The government of Monotonous only values productivity, and individualism and creativeness do not contribute to the productivity and the scientific truth the government values so much.

Master Narrative

As the United States of America continued to obsess over the need for innovation and as the citizens desire for more continued to grow, it quickly became apparent that there needed to be changes. As this growing narrative became popular it sparked a revolution which lead a new radical government to be established and thus ushered a new era of capitalism that had not been seen before. The government would feed of the citizens need to constantly evolve to justify removing activities such as art, music and film by promising the masses that it would lead to greater societal mobility for everyone. The change was met with great resistance but the immediate benefits were enough to subdue the revolts and began to convince people that what they were doing actually made America a better place. There was no more crime and poverty since everyone had a place in the society because there was little thinking required to obtain a job given that everything was predicated on recruiting and perfecting one’s craft. Additionally the increase in innovation lead to safer roads and buildings while the breakthroughs in medicine eliminated illness altogether. However, perhaps the great’s results that came from this is that there was no sadness or depression in the society given that all problems that were physical, mental and emotional were a thing of the past. Everyone was in perfect health and matched with perfect people which allowed them to focus on more important matters like making sure that the society was functioning at its most efficient level possible. After centuries of adaptation the society finally reached its maximum efficiency and in turn created the perfect society that was rid of any plague. Having children grow up without knowing any semblance of the unnecessary hardships placed on their ancestors, which in large part were brought about thanks to things that evoked dangerous emotions such as love, joy and sadness. With no more Art to evoke such emotions it allowed everyone to maintain balance and gave them a sense of clarity. This ultimately created the world of Monotonous which thrives to this day and has created a paradise that resembles the garden of eden.

Complications: Our main character will be the president’s child and

her journey into discovering the dark reality of what the government is hiding. She will have to come to her own conclusion about whether or not it is just that people are limited to focus on things that are deemed safe by a higher power. She will have to fight against her father and the government’s wishes in hopes of exposing the citizens to the beauty of art and emotions that have been lost for so long, while being well aware that if she does, it could result in her own death and her effort being in vain.

Turning Point:

She comes to the realization that art and creativity is important for everyone because it allows people to feel alive instead of mindlessly living through life. She feels it gives her purpose and therefore is crucial for everyone to be exposed to art because it could change everything and fill the void that so many people have in life.

Climax: Standoff between the government/president and his daughter

where she threatens to overthrow the government by revealing its deepest darkest secrets. The president gives his daughter an ultimatum to decide between her cause or her life. She chooses to sacrifice herself for her beliefs, and as she is shot, she reveals the painting as she falls to her death.

Ending: The current government is toppled and individual freedom is returned to the people. They honor her as a martyr and create art in her name to teach the future generation about the importance of creativity because without it, there is no purpose to life.

You must pray to one god: Tamir. The church of Tamir controls everything you do. You must follow the Ten Tamirments or you will receive a public beating by a Tamir priest. You are obligated to pray to the statue of Tamir for at least four hours every day. The only color you can wear is gray because there are no nice things in Tamir Land. Whatever you do, DO NOT WEAR YELLOW. The church of Tamir will kill you. Wearing yellow makes you invisible in the sand and the church cannot watch you pray.

Collin Howard, Eyal Schory,

Everyone must grow happy leaves in their homes and present the statue of Tamir with three grams of happy leaves every praying period. You are not rich, you are not poor, your sole purpose in Tamir Land is to grow happy leaves. You must follow a daily routine set by the church. Any form of intellectual thought is prohibited. No one may discuss the smell coming out of the church. Any violation to these rules will result in not only your death, but also the destruction of your happy leaves tree. Long live Tamir.

Aayush Patel, Neel Saswade

What is your theme? Individual liberty and freedom of expression. What is your Conflict? In Tamir Land, the citizens’ lives are dominated by the Church of Tamir, which sets strict rules controlling every aspect of life. Any citizen who violates one of these rules, known as the Ten Tamirments, is put to death without question. People pray to Tamir, wear the same clothes, and eat the same food every day. Any violation of the daily routine is criminal; no individuality or originality exists. However, one day, our eventual hero, the men with the special hair, sees something that he just cannot forget: the real Tamir. Realizing that the whole Church of Tamir is a scam, he decides to act. What are your complications? Upon realizing the existence of Tamir and the true nature of Tamirland, our hero sets out to expose the truth. However, while he plans, he realizes that the citizens have been brainwashed to a point of no return.

What is your turning point? Our hero begins a closeted underground society of anti-Tamirists. In contrast to the flawed society that they observe, the anti-Tamirists explore freedom of action and expression.

What gets worse? The resistance effort is discovered by the Church of Tamir by an undercover Tamirist spy. What is the climax? The Church of Tamir, led by the great Tamir himself, embarks on a mission to crush the resistance and murder all of those involved. They find the antiTamirist safe house, but our heroes are tipped off by an Anti-Tamirist and manage to escape just in time. However, the ultimate anti-Tamir weapon they had developed is destroyed.

What is your key moment? After his brief discussion with our hero (the man with the special hair) before the attack, the spy finally realizes the true value of freedom and the virtue of the anti-Tamirists. He saves our hero and slays previously almighty Tamir. How does it end? The heroes develop a new government, where equality reigns supreme and all work together to achieve common goals. The Church of Tamir no longer exists, and people are free to do as they please, unbound by restrictions.

Things Get Worse

During the period in which Gregory thinks over the next course of action, he momentarily goes into a state of depression after the realization of what the regime has been doing, and feels like nothing in life is worth living over if everything is just monitored and controlled (Considers suicide, etc.)

Ah-Hah Moment Gregory finally decides, after a conversation with one of the turncoats and with one of the administrators from the regime, that he must make the journey to live off the grid. He is determined and begins to devising a new plan to get away from the administrators at his work, and as well as cooperate with the resistance in planning a timely escape.

Climax Moment Gregory finally makes it to the border of the grid; what is considered off and on the grid, he is about to cross over seemingly unnoticed when one of the administrators from the regime comes out and confronts him, with the intention to kill (gun in hand, etc.)

Conclusion After the confrontation occurs with the administrator (results in the killing of the administrator and the wounding of Gregory), Gregory makes it out slowly off the grid. Before he leaves completely, he takes one last look at the distant city (the citadel) that he called home, he looks back at the dead administrator, and the small tattoo in his skin designated for the injection of the drug. After that, he heads out into the unknown, disappearing into the brush; trying to find others like him.
