DYSTOPIAN STORIES
When Thomas More wrote his satirical fiction novel, Utopia, in the 16th Century about the creation of a perfect society, he unwittingly spawned a new genre. Dystopias are not entirely futuristic; they actually reflect the concerns of the times in which they are created. From Orwell’s 1984 to Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the common thread in all dystopias is that human ideas should never be propagated at the expense of living beings, and mass surveillance and uniformity inevitably lead to totalitarianism.
This book was designed by the talented Fremont High School seniors as the culmination of their dystopian literature unit. Their task was to imagine their own dystopian world and create a storyboard that would represent the key plot points of a fictional narrative.

monotopia The people in power were tired of trying to stop racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination. It seemed easier to make everyone appear the same and erase all cultures, religions, and traditions. Everyone wears the same clothes that covers the entire body (Burka). They also wear gloves and helmets to hide any visible differentiation. To identify each citizen, everyone has a barcode on their backs. The first 4 digits of their barcode represent the year they were born. Everyone is given a neutral name by the government that does not reveal ethnicity or culture. In this society, hate crimes have essentially vanished. People are taught that difference and diversity is bad because it fractures communities and leads to chaos. Practicing religion or displaying one’s culture is strictly banned by the society. Speaking other languages is illegal in this new society. This is done so that everyone stays the same, avoiding prejudice and unifying everyone under one identity. However, this has taken a toll on the people. The citizens have lost their identity and individuality to the uniformity of society. People are now closed off, and lack culture, depth, and meaning in their lives. Some people object against the morals of the society, and they practice and share their cultures, religions, and ethnicities in secret. The government executes these rebels.

It is a regular day in Monotopia. Wide shot establishes the environment.
The main character, a guy named Salt, is walking along when he discovers a secret entrance in an alley.
This door leads to a secret club. Inside, people show their faces and share their respective cultures and religions with each other.
After exploration of the club, Salt realizes that diversity is beautiful, and he understands how his life has been missing something all this time. As he learns about his heritage he feels he has finally found a community where he can be a part of. He recognizes the wrongs the government has committed around diversity. Close shot to emphasize the character’s realization.
As he is meeting all the people at the club, Salt makes a friend named Pepper.
The Authorities show up and raid the club. Dutch shot to create dramatic affect.
During the struggle, Salt and Pepper escape.
Together, they start an underground movement called the Shakers. They hack into communication lines and they plan on sending out a filmed public message to the entire society on TVs and phones around the world. The Shakers want to share with everyone that diversity and culture is good and should be celebrated and shared, not banned.
The authorities locates their secret hideout and raid the building just as they finish filming.
Salt holds back the Authorities, giving Pepper just enough time to run to the main computer.
Pepper presses the upload button and shares the message with the world.

Moses H., Shelley H., Shashank S. Chipopola is the ideal society. In a world where people continually have bad thoughts and engage in terrible actions, the government stops any problems by clearing anyone’s memory from the last minute if they have a bad thought. This causes society to be more moral with their actions because it’s impossible for them to be immoral. The government is very proud of this system because they believe they can have a perfect world. The government’s system relies on a chip implanted in all civilians’ foreheads. When people are born, they are immediately given the implant. No one knows they have the implant because they cannot feel it or lose the memory of thinking about it. The chip has proven effective but it sometimes causes people to forget crucial things about who they are, which makes everyone feel confused.
Meet Chip. Chip is an ordinary man in Chipopola. He, as any member in society, suffers the control of the chip but doesn’t know it. Little does he know, his life is going to change greatly because of the chip and his actions.
One day after a restless nights sleep, Chip is walking downstairs 7 to get a glass of Chiponade when he trips, falls down an entire flight of stairs, and hits his head. Naturally, his memory of the fall is erased but he still has a terrible headache he can´t shake. This was the first indication of the chip in his brain starting to malfunction but there was a glitch; he kept forgetting he was in pain which drove him mad and confused his brain to a breaking point.
His thoughts became worse and worse causing Chip to break down, feeling his first true emotion of sadness. With tears flowing down his face and a malfunctioning chip, he contemplates others and why he has only experienced good things his whole life. All his interactions had been as if he was a robot. He started to wonder what was the purpose. Why was everyone acting like this? As he removed the chip from his forehead, he began to realize how conwas. Chip immediately tries to talk to peo- trolled he
ple and tell them about the chip in their heads that is affecting them. Society begins to be concerned but their thoughts are immediately wiped by the government. He pleads with them but it is as if he is talking to blank slates. Chip wonders what would happen if he broke the chip. He starts throwing it at the wall and hitting it with a hammer. The chip is indestructible. He picks up the chip again but a jolt shoots out and kills him. So there lies Chip in the middle of society, a society built on flawed attributes.
THE OUTSIDERS
Written by: Latanya Lee Illustrated by: Nicole Azarcon
INTRODUCTION: Danny Phantom always thought what life would be like outside of the secluded dome, but President Ash and the government has taught Danny and all the students at Belmont High School that outside this dome exists the outsiders. The outsiders are mutants outside the dome who target people on the inside and turn innocent lives into monsters like them. About 150 years ago there was a nuclear war with all the countries in which the radiation from the bomb turned most people into reanimation of humans. These humans became infected with the radiation and are unable to care for themselves, so they prey on the humans. The government has always taught children before they could even walk that the outsiders are bad people, but never goes into full depth about the subject. Except for the frightening idea that they leech the blood off of others. However, thanks to the ancestors of President Ash, his family has created this dome to protect society from the outsiders. This ties into the Marxist lens because the rich minority control and demonage the outsiders. Danny has never encountered an outsider and neither has his friends, but his dad has. Jack Fenton works with the outsiders. Due to the non disclosure agreement written in his work contract, he is not allowed to tell anyone much about what he does, but Danny does know that his dad is amongst a small group that work closely with the government to try to eliminate the outsiders to keep their community safe and protected.
BACKGROUND: Ever since his brief encounter with an outsider at the age of seven, Danny has always been curious about the outsiders and what life is like outside the dome. When Danny was seven, he stumbled upon a little creek that happened to be at the edge of the dome. The creek was divided by the dome. Danny’s side showed a majestic, flower filled green land while outside of the dome the creek was dry and sandy with only the little river to show life. When trying to follow the end of the little stream going downhill, he spots a little red haired girl that appears to be the same age as him. From Danny’s perspective, she does not seem vicious or show signs of being a monster who craves blood, but a normal girl cupping her hands to place near her face. The little girl is startled by Danny, and begins running as fast as she can until she was a faint shadow. Till this day, Danny would always come back to this exact spot to see if she would come back. She never did.

Danny and his friend, Tucker began to walk home from school. While walking back to Danny’s house, they begin to argue about Danny’s curiosity about the outsiders. Tucker assures Danny that President Ash and the government are keeping them safe and protects from the outsiders. He also added that Danny should not question where they live, as this life is what is best for them. As they reach the end of the street, they turn to see Jack drag a woman out of her house. Danny and Tucker peer over and realize, she is unconscious. Tucker and Danny are confuse and begin to run towards a bush and duck. Jack then begins to shove the woman to an all black range rover and darts to the end of the street. Tucker is skilled with technology, he and Danny have been creating a device that changes the frequencies on radio stations to listen in on conversations. Danny and Tucker have never tried the device until now, and with a careful hand and only a few minutes of moving the wire left and right, it finally works. They have overheard Danny’s dad conversing with Tucker’s dad. Tucker’s dad is another outside investigator. What Danny and Tucker heard shocks them. The conversation reveals that their job involves kicking out many people in the dome to the outside. This is because there has been a decrease in people pulling their weight in the system and the government and President Ash decided to throw them out and call them the outsiders. Danny and Tucker are angered and repulsed by the lies they have been fed by the government. They feel betrayed and are determined to discover what is actually outside the dome. That day, they went to a girl, Jessie, who was rumored to have the truth about the outsiders. She claims hat the dome is filled with gas that creates a hallucination for them to view the outsiders as evil and monstrous. The girl then presents Tucker and Danny with a pill that she claimes helps with having the effects of the gas be removed from the body. Being hesitant at first, they all take the pill and follow the girl to a route that leads to a door leaving the dome. As Jessie opens the gate to leave the dome a beam of light and a gust of air hit all of them in the face.
THE COMPLICATIONS: Danny and Tucker are dismayed about the awful treatment of the outsiders. There are large factories connected to each other, and depressed workers either boxing food, constructing cars or sewing clothes. Tucker and Jessie wander off to the huts. As Danny searches for them, at the corner of his eye, he recognizes a figure walking toward his way. The same features from eleven years ago are still embedded in his brain, and bring him back to the river flowing from when he was seven just discovering the creek. Their eyes meet, and the girl stops as they are now face to face. They both stare at each other like they have known each other their whole lives. They greet each other and she explains her life to him. How the outsider’s purpose in life is to work everyday to create everything needed for the people inside the dome. Danny is petrified of how the outsiders are treated, he promises her that he will come up with a plan to fix this. After a few hours, Jessie, Danny and Tucker have sneaked their way back inside the dome. It is the next day, and Danny and Tucker are at school. Danny stormes through the halls in search of Tucker. Danny finally finds Tucker in front of his locker and grabs his arm to pull him inside an empty classroom. Danny proposs an idea to Tucker of what they can do. Tucker agrees and both decide to discuss the plan in detail at Danny’s house. However, Danny and Tucker are not aware that they were being watched by the government. There is a hidden camera inside the classroom. President Ash furious, ordered his best assasinator, Vlad, to handle them. Vlad obey and hunt them down.

TURNING POINT: After school Danny, Tucker and Jessie meet at Danny’s house. The house is empty and Danny decides to use the device that creates a charge that messes up with any frequencies listening in on them. Although Danny is unaware that he is always being watched, he is suspicious of people listening in on him. Danny devises a plan that has Jessie steal more pills from the government, and all of them; including the girl Danny had met will insert these pills inside the food before the next shipment. The outcome of the plan is very unpredictable and dicey. Nevertheless, Jessie and Tucker both like the plan and agree to it. They all had agreed to meet at midnight where they would execute the plan, and made sure the shipment would follow through the next day. THINGS GET WORSE: Jessie and Tucker had go home, and a few hours pass. being alone at the house, Danny suspects that something is not right. That it was odd that his mother and father were not home. Suddenly Danny’s phone rang. He glances at the screen and sees that it was his dad that called and requested to facetime. Danny answers and quickly hears loud cries and muffled voices. The screen shows both his parents tied up to a radiator with tape across their mouths. Danny is overwhelmed by the screams, he cries out of fear. A dark voice behind the phone demands that Danny stops with whatever he plans on doing. The covered man rips the tape off both their faces. The mom and dad gave a long stare at each other, then the dad turns his head to the camera saying the last words that will ever leave his mouth, ‘Fight.’ Without any hesitation the man fires the gun. Danny then heard two loud shots and flashing lights hit the now blank bodies that were his father and mother. Uncontrollable tears stream down his face and smashs the phone to the ground. Traumatized by the fear in his parents eyes, he is determined to fight.
CLIMAX: They followed through with the plan, and the next day the shipment arrives inside the dome. The workers unload every box off the truck and the food is distributed to each house. In a few minutes, thousands would have already taken the pill. Tucker hacks into the government’s system and enforces a coding that turns on all screens in the dome. In front of the screen Danny exposes the government for what they truly are, and the true identity of the outsiders. The people inside the dome were now enraged with hatred towards the government and President Ash. Thousands stepped outside of their houses and head straight to the governments headquarters. A line of guards surround the headquarters with armed weapons ready to fight. Everyone begins to run towards the headquarters. Once the first guard fired their weapon, a war commenced.
AHA MOMENT: Many are harmed or injured. The citizens are losing to the the government. Tucker and Jessie were hide behind a rock to try and stop the bleeding from Tucker’s leg. Danny is crawling for help as President Ash’s shadow hovers over him, as he stretches his arm with his finger on the trigger, a sudden and loud spark went up to the sky. Everyone stops and stares at the sky. Then a voice echoes at the top of the headquarter building. It was President Ash’s sister, Isabelle. From the radiant specs of color in her eyes, she has taken the pill as well. Betrayed by her own brother, she helps fight back against President Ash and the guards. CONCLUSION: The war is finally over. President Ash and his guards disappeared for good. Isabelle enters the code on the keypad to open the dome and diminishs the tainted oxygen the citizens have been breathing their whole lives. Danny stands up to find himself on the creek with his eyes laid on the same girl he saw eleven years ago. Yet there is a big difference, there is no longer a clear wall separating them. The outsiders and the citizens interact with each for the first time, and start to rebuild their society together. They were no longer the outsiders. They are no longer stereotypes taught to children as monsters, but just as human as them.

When the new children are born, they are given an implant. this implant has a microphone to find what the person is talking about, and an RFID tracking device built in. When the children are young, they go to school and get an education. In school, they learn about world history to some extent. The curriculum focusses on the positive aspect of socialism and communism. They also teach about the what is known as the last world war. This is the war where they teach about greed and the push for power. Becasue of these terrible things, the world went to war with itself and millions of people died. These children are taught to be naive about life and what really happened and by being naive, the people are then prone to being manipulated by power to get them to do what they want. They were also taught that the one man that is the savior to them all is the leader, Sony Tark
