HISTORY
Over the years the freediving community has accumulated, tested and perfected knowledge and training methods to enhance breath hold and overall under water performance. Freedivers have a high level of awareness on the different phases the human body and mind go through during a breath hold scenario. They have developed an efficient “Underwater Conduct” that helps them save oxygen, move efficiently and avoid injuries, increasing the safety and joy of their activity. In January 2014, inspired by their passion for the Ocean and the joy one goes through when engaging intensely with Nature, the “Survival Apnea Team” put together fun and effective courses which aim to share “Freedivers knowledge” with other water enthusiasts. The courses will deepen and develop understanding on how to prepare for and how to behave the moment you go below the surface on a single breath.

TEAM
Survival Apnea Instructors Augusto Born and raised in Peru, Augusto has spent his last years traveling around the world making a living as a tour leader, freediver instructor (Apnea Total and SSI Freediving systems) and Wildfitness coach. Survival Apnea is the result of two of his strongest passions put together, freediving and surfing. Having surfed big waves for a number of years, including 2 Billabong XXL championships at Pico Alto, Lima – Peru (2003 & 2004), has given him direct experience on what a surfer goes through when things get tough in the ocean. As a freediving instructor Augusto has taught people how to dive on a single breath in Peru, Kenya, Thailand and Indonesia. Currently he is teaching Survival Apnea Courses where needed, and sharing the Wildfitness philosophy as a Natural Health and Skills Coach.
Marianna Born and raised in Moscow, Russia. Marianna has spent 12 years in professional swimming, both training and competing. In 2013 she obtained her master’s degree as a swimming coach, from The Sports University of Moscow. During the last years, Marianna has been working as a swimming coach, scuba instructor and as a Kid´s Summer Camp Leader. Masha, as her friends like to call her, got into freediving and freediving competitions in 2012. Since, she´s won twice in the Russian National Championships, and also got winning prices in European competitions (Latvia, Serbia and France). In 2013, she entered the top-3 women in the world in a discipline called “Constant Weight No Fins” (CNF) with a dive to 52m. Then, in the same year, entered the top-10 in a discipline called “Constant Weight” with fins (CWF) with a dive to 75m. In September 2014, Marianna competed in the AIDA Team World Championships (Sardinia – Italy) where the Female Russian Team obtained GOLD. She can hold her breath for more than 6:30 minutes and dive past the 80 meters depth. At present Marianna is working as a freediving instructor, giving courses in Russia, Indonesia, Egypt, France, Kenya and Peru.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who can take the course? Any healthy person with willingness to learn and the ability to swim 200m without assistance. Age 16 years or over
I am under 16 years old, but really want to do it? People under 16 years will be allowed to join a course provided 1 adult (close relative) joins the course with them. At the same time, each individual case will be assessed separately for final approval
I am a surfer. What will the courses give me? A deeper understanding of what the human body and mind go through when under water on a single breath Increased awareness on the different sensations during a breath hold Dry exercises to increase lung flexibility/capacity Overall improve breathing and relaxation skills Water sessions and/or training formats that will allow you to train yourself (and a buddy) With discipline and perseverance anyone that follows a training program will improve relaxation skills, breathing skills, ability to recognize sensations and know how to push through them (tougher mind), efficient movement under water, physical adaptations to resist higher levels of CO2 and low O2. Safe training habits In general, learn ways to develop an effective “Underwater Conduct” Gain confidence in what you are capable of, and at the same time accept the importance of being humble when it comes to “Playing in the Ocean”.
After the course and having followed a training program I am feeling very confident to go and charge BIG WAVES, am I ready for it? On rare occasions, someone turns up to a freediving course and with very little, or no training, nor much water experience the person manages to hold his breath for over 5 minutes. Does this mean he is ready to charge BIG surf? The Breath Hold component is just one within many of the skills and levels of fitness the Waterman must develop to gain confidence and self-reliance when the going gets tough. Courage is as important as humbleness. Knowing when to tap into any of them is an ability a Waterman develops with no rush, over long periods of time. Enjoy the journey.
I want to surf BIGGER WAVES, do I need to take a Survival Apnea Course? The answer is “NO”. There are plenty of guys out there charging BIG surf who have never taken any sort of breath hold course, yet they have very successful watermen careers…if that makes sense. The courses are an attempt to articulate and condense knowledge that you can also get on your own simply by being exposed to the Ocean and its challenges on a regular basis. At the same time, we must add that a course will raise awareness on things you never thought of, or you were not paying attention too, which in one way or another could enhance your watermen experience.
I am not particularly an ocean person, yet I practice different sports and always keen to learn something new. What will the course give me? Show you how being focused in the moment enhances performance Exercises to work on your ability to remain relaxed/focused under stressful situations Breathing exercises to develop breathing and relaxation skills Deeper understanding on the human body and mind Develop your willpower
What equipment do I need to bring? For Theory days: Comfortable clothes, Pen and paper, Yoga mat or equivalent, water For Pool days: Wetsuit, towel, water, swimming goggles (optional)
