THE NEW & THE NOW SUMMER 2022

DREAM Team

Gucci pairs with adidas for its latest collaboration. BY COLLEEN KRATOFIL

F

rom Balenciaga to North Face, Gucci has proved beyond doubt in recent months that it plays well with others. Now comes the most hotly anticipated of its recent collaborations: a collection with adidas that drops June 7. Adidas is no stranger to major collaborations itself (see: Ivy Park, YEEZY) so the mash-up between the iconic Italian heritage label and the German athletic brand has been on everyone’s shopping list ever since it debuted on the runway in February, during Gucci’s “Exquisite Collection” Fall 2022 Ready-to-Wear fashion show in Milan. Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele played upon each brand’s use of three stripes in their iconography (for Gucci, red and green, and for adidas, white). For example, he gave a dash of luxury to adidas’s instantly recognizable designs by featuring Gucci’s red and green stripes on one side of the sleeve and pant leg in a track suit, and adidas’s white stripes on the other. Michele also merged both brand’s logos, mixing the adidas Trefoil with Gucci’s interlocking “G” monogram to “amplify two legacies” through apparel and accessories in the line. The apparel ranges from sportswear pieces to items better suited for cheering in the stands. There are high-shine takes on adidas windbreakers and tracksuits, and tennis-ready polos, sweater vests, and skirts, while pleated midi skirts, knit sweaters, and dresses lean more sophisticated than sporty. As far as accessories, the beloved Gucci Horsebit 1955 purse makes an appearance, along with duffels and camera bags all splashed with the Trefoil treatment. Classic shoe styles from each brand – the adidas Gazelle sneaker and Gucci Horsebit loafers – got a dose of the other’s iconography in mixes reminiscent of the Gucci x Balenciaga hack. The line launches on the Gucci Confirmed app and website on June 7, and the adidas x Gucci Pop-Ins in NYC (725 5th Ave.) and East Hampton (17 Newtown Lane) will open June 10.

MAKING Waves

The new timepiece from Harry Winston mixes sporty and chic with splashes of sapphires and diamonds. Summers in the Hamptons require the perfect wardrobe of beachready basics with stylish pieces for nights on the town. That means you need the ultimate wear-everywhere accessory that both refines and elevates any outfit, from tennis whites to flowy dinner party gowns. Enter, the newest Harry Winston timepiece joining the brand’s Ocean collection, the Ocean Biretrograde Diamond Waves Automatic 36mm. It’s the new sporty-chic release from the storied jeweler, launching June 1, which was specially designed for everyday wear. But that’s not to say it skimps on diamonds — quite the contrary. The white gold timepiece with two retrograde displays features 33 bright blue baguette-cut sapphires and 51 baguette-cut diamonds on the dial that were designed to mimic rolling waves. Aquatic themes carry strongly throughout the piece (another reason this is Hamptons-ready). There’s a mother-of-pearl dial, and the hours and minutes are arranged into a droplet shape, surrounded by diamonds on the sides and a “stream” of blue sapphires below. The use of blue not only matches the spirit of the Ocean collection; but also, it’s a nod to the rare 45.52-carat Hope Diamond that was acquisitioned by Harry Winston himself in 1949. It’s still an important color of the House of Harry Winston to this day. Another important factor that makes the watch a classic is the brand’s signature emerald-cut diamond at 12 o’clock. The case features 18K white gold set with 72 baguette-cut diamonds and a diamond-set structure around the winding crown — a reference to the legacy of the brand and the arched stone entryway of the Fifth Avenue Flagship Salon. The strap comes in white alligator leather with 18-karat white gold buckle with 24 baguette-cut diamonds. While the whole piece is certainly dazzling, it really was made for everyday wear, per the brand’s press release. It has 100-meter water resistance, it harnesses natural motions of the wrist to power the watch’s mechanical automatic movement, and the balance spring is made from silicon, which resists magnetic and thermal fluctuations. It encompasses everything the Ocean collection, Harry Winston’s most versatile line, is known for, evoking “sporty allure and sophisticated elegance.” Plus, it looks spectacular with a tan. The Ocean collection launched in 1998 as the designated sport pieces of the brand and the perfect “companions” for daily adventures. Continuing the legacy, the Ocean Biretrograde Diamond Waves watch ensures “smooth sailing between sporty activities and glamorous events.” As summer starts to wind up, it’s time to make this your accessory of the season. SUMMER 2022

SIBLING Act Brian Atwood launches a new footwear line with Brother Zak Rodriguez.

B

uilding on the brand signatures of his eponymous label, American footwear powerhouse Brian Atwood is bringing a fresh new take to the market — with help from his little brother Zak Rodriguez. The two have long shared a passion for fashion’s ability to tell a story. At the young age of ten, Rodriguez remembers sitting at the dining table with his brother, coloring copies of Atwood’s shoe sketches. Now, the two are coming together to launch iL FRATELLINO (iL FRAT for short), designed by Rodriguez. Atwood has more than earned the approval of the fashion world and Hollywood’s hottest celebrities since launching his brand almost 20 years ago. So, naturally, he was the best choice to serve as creative advisor to the luxury shoe line. For Rodriguez, iL FRATELLINO is his first fashion line after a successful career in fashion editorial and the creative marketing world. With the line, the duo aims to capture the wild adventurousness of the next-gen fabulous 20-somethings in the city. “When conceptualizing this brand, I looked back at these wild weekends I had with my closest girlfriends,” Rodriguez tells Grazia Gazette: Hamptons. “We’d go out in Chicago and end up in Miami, then have to be back to the office by

9 a.m. on Monday. You never knew where any day or night would take you — and that was exhilarating. That’s what I would consider to be the DNA of iL FRAT.” Rodriquez brings his luxe (night)lifestyle to life in a range of wearable, versatile, and – most importantly – fun mules, sandals, booties, stilettos, and sneakers. They’re ineffably cool across the board, with bold hues of pink, yellow, fuchsia, and a particularly stunning metallic high voltage blue. The most subtle styles still pack a statement, such as an oh-so-chic bootie with a polkadot print or a heeled sandal in black with a high-gloss finish. iL FRATELLINO embodies the very essence of luxury footwear — without the super-luxe price point. It was important for the Chicago natives to keep the price accessible to a young audience. In execution, that means prices ranging from $250 to $500. “It’s the same luxurious leathers, silks, and feathers you’d get from designer collections. We decided that Gen Z shouldn’t have to compromise being fabulous and making rent,” jokes Atwood. So how to get your hands on a pair (or a few)? The new line will be available to purchase directly on the il FRATELLINO website in early June. We’d predict this collection will sell out fast, so mark your calendars. – TY GASKINS

SWEET & Lo

Racking up accolades, London-based knitwear designer Chet Lo is a star on the rise. At just 25 years old, Chinese-American knitwear designer Chet Lo already knows exactly who he is. More importantly, so do his legions of fans. The London-based, New York native founded his eponymous label at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and already counts A-listers such as Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, Chloe Cherry, and Christina Aguilera as fans of his sultry silhouettes and signature spike knit fabrications. Set to stir up London Fashion Week for a third season this September, the Central Saint Martins alum credits creative talent incubator Fashion East with his frenetic rise – which is still rising. In the month of May alone, Lo was featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list along with his appearance in the British Fashion Council’s New Gen initiative, supporting emerging British-based designers. When describing the quintessential Chet Lo client, the designer tells Grazia Gazette: Hamptons, “They’re super unafraid of how people look at them on the street.” Wishing to instill an unabashed strength and empowerment through his creations, Lo finds great reward in knitting a piece for someone who really, really wants it. “I love the craft of what I do,” says Lo. Shop Lo’s retro-futuristic pieces at Selfridges, SSENSE, and H. Lorenzo. – HANNAH MILITANO

THE Real Thing Kelly Killoren Bensimon brings a touch of luxury to the real estate market.

Kelly Killoren Bensimon is always evolving. From an influential editor to a top-selling author, model, reality television personality, and award winning real estate broker, she has lived many lives and thrived in them all. Now crushing it as a luxury realtor, KKB, gave Grazia Gazette: Hamptons the skinny on this summer’s real estate forecast. GRAZIA: Do you have any tips for buying or selling in this hot Hamptons market? Kelly Killoren Bensimon: You have to know your audience and keep your kitchens and bathrooms updated. Listening to your clients and understanding their mindset is key – knowing what their needs are, and not just what they want. Understanding the landscape of the Hamptons both culturally and historically is important as well. I wrote two iterations of my book In The Hamptons for Assouline, so I understand everything from the vacation destination mindset to how the inlets were created. G: Can you tell me about the new Flying Point project? KKB: This iconic property on Burnett Creek is a unique waterfront opportunity in Southampton township. Priced at $29.5M, this modern waterfront home will be constructed on Mecox Bay in Water Mill, NY, set over 2.3 acres. With 1,500 square feet of private shoreline and private beach access, the design nods to the traditional local architecture reimagined with a modern sensibility and refined Italian style from architect Antonio Pio Saracino and developer James Eckel. G: What do you see next for Hamptons real estate and real estate in general? KKB: I’m foreseeing the rise of branded residential content- making your listings a brand. G: How do you unwind? What are your favorite things to do out East? KKB: I love riding horses at Two Trees Farm, clamming and water skiing in Amagansett, and bike riding to Georgica beach. Grabbing an Aperol Spritz at Sant Ambroeus is the best, as well as Sunday night dinners at Le Bilboquet, and Tutto il Giorno in Sag Harbor.

LAUGH OUT LACI

Mosley brings the laughs in Paramount+’s hit reboot of iCarly, while her acting career is seriously exploding.

BY JACLYN ROTH

W

hen Laci Mosley was growing up, she often would come home from school and watch iCarly on Nickelodeon, like so many other milennials. The show – starring Miranda Cosgrove as Carly Shay, Nathan Kress, and Jerry Trainor – focuses on a trio whose lives get flipped upside down when their internet show, iCarly, becomes an instant hit. At the time, Mosley found that she related to the quirky characters, and it was a fun way for her to escape from reality. Now, that dream has become reality and Mosley’s own life has been flipped as she stars as Harper, the aspiring fashion designer and best friend of Carly on the Paramount+ hit reboot of iCarly. Mosley first auditioned via video chat, which led her to meeting with the showrunner virtually. A few days later, she joined the cast on a video call, where she got to learn more about them and to read a script. “I got on Zoom with Miranda, Jerry, and Nathan, and we just played around. We had a really good time. I felt like it was going to be a good fit,” the 30-year-old exclusively tells GRAZIA GAZETTTE: Hamptons. Another sign things were meant to be: Mosley and Cosgrove had met already, when they were teenagers while auditioning for a commercial. “She was so sweet. I remembered how nice she was,” she adds. When the comedian walked onto the iCarly set, she says, it was a “surreal”

GRAZIA USA

moment; she felt like she was in a museum, since the jukebox and other classic set pieces were easily recognizable from her childhood TV time. “I always knew I wanted to act, but I had no idea I’d be transported into this show I watched as a child,” she says. “I was a little intimidated the first day on set because I didn’t know how I was going to fit in, but Miranda immediately walked in and sat next to me. She has great energy and is so sweet. Everyone made me feel like family instantly, and they wanted to collaborate and make the best show possible.” Despite all of the good vibes, the Texas native admits “filming Season 1 was a lot more stressful than Season 2 because you feel like you have a huge responsibility when you work on a reboot that is so beloved by fans, especially being a new character.” Besides being a new addition, Harper is a queer Black woman — a rarity on mainstream television unless “the story is often traumatic or their family doesn’t support them,” the star notes. “Representation matters because you feel like you’re not alone, and also if you don’t see yourself, then how do you know that you are important and that you matter? It’s really critical that kids can turn on a television show and see themselves.” So far, Mosley has received positive reviews and hopes that her performance will lead to more diverse roles in the entertainment industry. “I am very proud to be a Black woman with so many accomplishments. I’m also very proud to

have followed other Black women who have broken barriers so that I could even be here today, and I hope that I am doing the work to make life easier for Black and brown people and minorities in general,” she states. While preparing for the reboot, Mosley was adamant that Harper be accurately portrayed. “It was important that Harper not appear as a stereotype. She has her own life and is a fully formed three-dimensional character,” she says. The extremely favorable reaction to both Mosley’s character and the show in general has allowed the cast to let their hair down a bit more in Season 2, which premiered in April. “We just had fun and let loose, and it felt like less pressure because the first season was so well-received,” she says. “We just want to keep surprising the fans and having a good time.” She continues, “This season is going to be a lot of high jinks. It’s iCarly — things will be catching on fire; there is a whole dance number which I am really excited for people to see. There’s also some fun stuff on the horizon. I am excited for our audience to continue the ride with us.” For Mosley, the ride is just beginning. She recently wrapped production on the Netflix comedy The Out-Laws alongside Adam Devine, Pierce Brosnan, and Nina Dobrev, and she was featured on Vulture’s 2021 “The Comedians You Should and Will Know,” all while continuing her award-winning podcast “Scam Goddess.”

“I often compare wanting to be a professional actor to wanting to be a professional rapper because in the beginning, nobody wants to hear your mixtape!” she quips. “No one wants to watch these sketches I built. So, to get to the point where people are acknowledging my work and the things that I have done, it’s really humbling. I am just incredibly grateful that I can do things with my art that make people smile and laugh.” From the young age of five, Mosley knew she wanted to be an actor, but she also had confidence she could dive into the comedy world, as her jokes always landed with her family. “I thought, ‘Maybe I can really do this,’” she recalls. She subsequently took acting classes while in school, with her first big break coming from the improv group UCB, which led to a part in the Pop TV show Florida Girls. When asked what the best part is about her current job, the podcast host simply says it’s about making people smile. “It’s why I got into this. At the end of the day, contributing something that is positive to this earth is my goal,” she admits. While Mosley currently has “a lot of irons in the fire” when it comes to future roles, she does have other aspirations, such as writing a book, creating her own television show and maybe even starring in a Marvel movie somewhere down the line. “I just love when people get a good experience from the things that I make,” she says, “so I am always working my hardest to give the best that I can.”

ROLLING INTO SUMMER

Take a big bite of the season with the best lobster rolls on the East End. BY NANCY KANE

T

he lobster roll is one of life’s simple pleasures. But, much like the perfect egg or a classic apple pie, it can be deceptively difficult to get just right. A rite of summer on the East End, the traditional seafood special is served everywhere from farmstands and food trucks to fine dining and fast-casual – with varying recipes and varying degrees of success. Originally created in Connecticut (or so the legend goes), warm lobster rolls are chunks of meat (claw, knuckle and tail), stuffed into a roll and drizzled with butter. The cold option, known as the “Maine” style, is lobster mixed with mayonnaise, spices, and celery. Chips or fries on the side is also de rigeur. During the 18th and 19th century, lobsters were so plentiful that they were known as a budget bite. Today, it’s quite the opposite: A lobster roll will run you anywhere from $22 to $40 depending on the daily market price, but the below options are well worth it. The “OG” of lobster rolls in the Hamptons, The Lobster Roll, aka LUNCH, has a new location in Southampton serving up the same fresh, classic seafood as the Amagansett landmark. Some folks even say the lobster salad version of the roll actually originated here in 1965. “We use classic New-England style split-top rolls, which are buttered and toasted on the outside, leaving the inside soft and fluffy. The Cold Classic Lobster Roll is prepared with chunks of cold-water lobster meat, just enough celery for crunch and texture, high quality mayonnaise and a hint of seasoning,” said owner Andrea Anthony. “The Hot Lobster Roll is prepared with chunks of cold-water lobster meat, high-quality drawn butter, and a touch of seasoning”. Now, you can bring also home your own lobster roll kit, complete with everything you need to make them at home for a crowd. 1980 Montauk Highway, Amagansett and 32 Montauk Highway, Southampton. A local favorite, the Shinnecock Lobster Factory, on Old Montauk Highway on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation is so unassuming you might blink and miss it. But don’t miss the freshest lobster around – often available at more reasonable prices than its Hamptons counterparts. Their lobster roll is served on a split brioche bun with a half pickle, accompanied by chips and coleslaw. One A-list endorsement? Their food truck catered for the recent Netflix film, Leave The World Behind, starring Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke, which filmed in nearby Riverhead. 42 Montauk Highway, Southampton. Southampton’s Plaza Café also launched a food truck a few years ago and it serves up one of the best lobster rolls around. Owner and chef Doug Gulija is a firm believer in “not messing with something that works,” so they keep it simple. “We butter-poach the lobster meat after a quick blanch of the whole lobster to get the meat out rather than just boiling

it until the meat is totally cooked. This adds to the texture and of course the flavor. The other thing we do is toss the butter poached lobster meat with some finely minced celery for a bit of crunch, snipped (not chopped) tarragon, fresh-squeezed lemon, lemon olive oil, and we combine it with a lobster aioli rather than straight mayo. This really intensifies the flavor.” Plaza Café on Wheels, 61 Hill Street, Southampton, NY. En route to the beach? Stop by the delightful Harbor Market and Kitchen in Sag Harbor’s Historic District, where Chef Paul Del Favero keeps the lobster rolls simple, fresh, and delicious. Their version is served warm with butter and a swipe of mayo on a toasted hot dog bun, and like everything in this market, is homemade, healthy, and prepared with the best sustainable and local ingredients possible. You’ll find plenty to accompany your sandwich in the shop, from salads and sides to chips and artisanal crackers. 184 Division St, Sag Harbor. At the end of Main Street in Sag Harbor, on the Long Wharf, The Dock House is a traditional lobster shack serving the freshest seafood around. A few small tables and some outdoor benches are crammed tight, but no matter: Folks line up for the lobster rolls, and kids love to see the lobster swim in the old claw foot tub in the corner. Served simply and full of lobster meat, they’re accompanied by a bag of chips that make it easy to carry your meal outside and watch the mega yachts go by. Or, try the lobster BLT with bacon, lettuce and tomato. 1 Long Wharf, Sag Harbor. At Baron’s Cove, enjoy your lobster rolls al fresco, overlooking the water and often accompanied by live jazz. Their lobster roll is made with fresh lobsters boiled in local sea water, delivered from a local salt maker, Amagansett Sea Salt Co. The lobster is then simply poached in clarified butter, dressed in a squeeze of lemon & sprinkled with some kosher salt. Baron’s Cove believes that “less is more with this one.” We’ll take it. 31 W. Water Street, Sag Harbor Over at The Living Room at The Maidstone, a new chef, Andrew Doran (formerly of SALT & Inlet Seafood) is bringing a Modern American Seafood concept to the boutique hotel. For a different twist on the classic, Doran is serving Lobster Beignets. Sharable for the whole table, the beignets are made with ricotta, Maine lobster, lemon zest, and a special sauce. “This zesty sauce is lime juice, mint, cilantro, and dill blended with a roasted garlic aioli. It’s the similar flavors you find on a Peruvian table,” said Chef Doran. 207 Main Street, East Hampton. Après beach, the place to be for forty years is the Clam Bar at Napeague, a Hamptons institution right on the side of the road into Montauk. The Clam Bar lobster roll is served with three ingredients: mayo, fresh lobster, and celery on a toasted potato bun with a side of coleslaw. The mix goes down well with an iced cold beer. When the Clam Bar is jumping, you know it’s summer. 2025 Montauk Highway, Amagansett.

THE MOST STYLISH HAMPTONITES OF 2022: NEXT GENERATION Meet Grazia Gazette’s picks for the Hamptonites defining a new generation of personal style. BY TY GASKINS

The Hamptons have long been synonymous with old money, Wall Street, and embracing your inner “Coastal Grandmother.” But now, there’s a new generation of stylemakers storming the sandy shores. Some have frequented the Hamptons for years, while others have started making seasonal appearances only recently. They all have one thing in common: a love for

fashion and finding the best places to show off the #OOTD. Luckily enough, the young fashion set who call the Hamptons their summer home aren’t big on gatekeeping. Meet the Grazia Gazette: Hamptons picks for Most Stylish Hamptonites of 2022: Next Generation, here to share their personal secrets to having a stylish summer of your own.

CHARLY STURM

T

he apple doesn’t fall too from the tree. The iconic Dr. Barbara Sturm’s love for skincare (and certainly, some of her products) rubbed off on her daughter, Charly Sturm, at a young age. Now, Charly works alongside her mogul mom in product development, marketing, social media, and content. Not to mention, she frequently serves face for the brand’s campaigns. Another similarity between the mother-daughter duo? Their love for fashion – which Charly especially knows a good amount about. Whenever she is in the Hamptons, Charly’s first stop is to restock on skincare, stop by her favorite fashion boutiques, and catch up with friends at her favorite restaurant. “The Crow’s Nest is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Montauk to meet up with friends,” Sturm tells Grazia Gazette: Hamptons. “The food is delicious, healthy, and fresh, and you’re surrounded by nature. What more can you ask for? It has such a unique and beautiful atmosphere and is the perfect spot just to catch up while out East. When not hanging out at The Crow’s Nest, “You can catch me in town shopping,” Charly dishes. “You can’t go wrong with Zimmerman. This Australian brand makes the most beautiful, feminine, and colorful designs, especially for the summer. Oh! And I can’t forget their incredible swimwear collection.” Meanwhile, “Knockout Beauty is THE spot to go for beauty, whether it’s skincare or makeup. And of course, you’ll be sure to find our favorite Dr. Barbara Sturm essentials there, too! Other than fashion and beauty, I’ve really been into interior design at the moment, and Clic in East Hampton has a wonderful mix of home goods and gifts. I always find something that I love, either for myself or for a friend.”

ANDREW WARREN

A

ndrew Warren is the powerhouse behind CollXab, an NYC-based agency where he represents brands and talents, including some of his closest friends. On top of that, he also adds influencer, fashion designer, and bonafide “host with the most” to his multihyphenated list of titles. During the high season, he brings his authentic and fun personality (and clients) out East to take over the Hamptons social scene. “It has been harder for men, especially ones with a more ‘loud’ style, to get looks in The Hamptons,” Warren tells Grazia Gazette: Hamptons, “but it has gotten easier over the years. My go-to O.G. spots have always been Blue&Cream and Blue One. Both places are great because it’s more unique and striking pieces than your typical designer labels.” “Of course, it has been great that luxury fashion brands like Gucci have boutiques out East now,” he continues. “For more designer needs, a fun fact is that Mr. Porter/Net-A-Porter is delivering next-day/same-day from the city, which has been an enormous savior of mine for last-minute events. Also, while heading to The Surf Lodge always be sure to check out what brand is popping in their shop that weekend. A hidden gem for the best cashmere sweaters of high quality is Cashmere Emporium in Southampton.” Finally, “A random yet question I’m constantly asked is, ‘Where is the best place to buy flowers or to send as a gift to someone out there?’ Definitely check out Topiaire Florist. It’s the absolute best there is!”

JULIA MOSHY

J

ulia Moshy is a New Yorker through and through. When she isn’t running Manhattan’s newest membership club, Casa Cipriani, or sharing her downtown lifestyle on Instagram, she takes a break from the fast-paced city life and heads east. Lately, Moshy reveals, “My passion project has been designing my Bridgehampton family home alongside my mother. We love going to Home Nature because it perfectly emulates the luxurious yet laidback lifestyle of the Hamptons. We’ve chosen many one-of-a-kind custom and vintage pieces in our home from their store in Southampton.” When not at home, though, “For a staycation getaway, wellness retreat, or spa day I love Shou Sugi Ban House,” she says. “I really wanted to gatekeep this one, but it’s too good not to share! They have literally every treatment under the sun. The experience transports you immediately to a place of rest and relaxation. I could go on about this, but it’s something you need to experience yourself. Trust me!” “I don’t do much shopping for clothes out east but I have to say, I can’t resist Zimmerman. If the Hamptons were an outfit, it would come from Zimmerman. The Surf Lodge Bazaar is another good one,” Moshy continues. “They partner with luxury brands to take over the bazaar periodically throughout the high season.” (See: GRAZIA USA x Ferragamo 2021!) In particular, she says, “My favorites from last summer were Ferragamo, Marc Jacobs, and LoveShackFancy. I look forward to seeing what they have lined up this year. But I truly love everything about Surf Lodge as a whole. Any given Saturday afternoon between MDW and Labor Day is essentially a ‘chosen family’ reunion featuring great live music and even better food and drinks, a true Hamptons destination.”

MIKE TOMMASIELLO

M

ike Tommasiello – better known by his IG handle @nydoorman – made a career out of partying and the relationships that come with it. Born and bred a New Yorker, he grew up on Long Island and spent his time going into the city, where he gained access to some of the most exclusive and coveted parties and befriending some of the city’s toughest doormen. Currently, he lives in Williamsburg and is the partner at No.9, a leading cannabis and web3 agency based out of LA. When he’s not working, he is usually shopping or heading out East…and shopping, natch. “Gucci is always one of my favorites in East Hampton,” Tommasiello says. “You never know when you’re going to get invited to some fabulous garden or beach party, so it’s good to know they carry everything here in case you need to pick up an outfit real quick. Another must while in East Hampton is the Ralph Lauren store, even if you don’t need anything. The East Hampton Ralph Lauren store is the perfect embodiment of the Hamptons lifestyle and why everyone goes out east to begin with. It’s perfectly comfortable and relaxed without being overly stuffy.” “Further east in Montauk, I love paying a visit to Melet Mercantile,” Tommasiello continues. “Every season they reopen with a curated and amazing collection of incredible vintage pieces. It’s sort of like part art gallery, part studio, part amazing closet. He’s since expanded to L.A.”

SUMMER 2022

KIT KEENAN

A

s the daughter of iconic fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, fashion has been a part of content creator Kit Keenan’s life since an early age. So too, the Hamptons – her home for the summer. When she’s not dishing it up in the kitchen and sharing delicious and healthy recipes with her IG followers, Keenan makes her rounds around the Hamptons, hitting all the best spots (like the 2021 GRAZIA USA x Salvatore Ferragamo bash at the Surf Lodge!). “Whenever I’m in the Hamptons, I always stop by The Surf Lodge,” Kennan tells Grazia Gazette: Hamptons. “They have a revolving schedule of pop-up shops, so there are always great new and unique finds, and you can stay for dinner. Not to mention, the deck is always a good time.” “Another favorite of mine in Montauk is Wyld Blue for luxury vintage items. I also like to venture over to Amagansett Square, for the Botanica Bazaar. They have such a great selection of skincare and beauty products. Whenever I’m planning an evening out or have an event, I like to check out Reformation for chic essentials and great beachy dresses. Of course, Cynthia Rowley is the best place to drop by in the Hamptons (not biased, I promise!). It has a chic beach-side bungalow feel that’s super inviting and homey.”

F

or the generation that grew up with Disney Channel, Hilary Duff is like part of the family. The hit show Lizzie McGuire made her a strong presence in the lives of an entire generation, setting her up for an enduring career that keeps reaching new heights. Born in 1987 in Texas, Duff moved to Los Angeles very early on to pursue a career in show business – a dream that she fulfilled at the tender age of 10. “I have already lived a rather adventurous life for a person my age,” she confesses. Indeed, at only 34, she boasts more than 35 roles in cinema and TV, more than 15 million copies of her five albums sold, a trilogy of best-selling novels, various successful entrepreneurial activities, and three wonderful children who are the greatest joy of her life: Luca, 10, who she had with ex-husband, ice hockey player Mike Comrie; Banks, 3, and Mae, 1, who she had with her current husband, musician and producer Matthew Koma, who she married in 2019. “When I’m on the set I miss them so much. I can’t stay away from them!” she says. “I take my kids with me on set when I can but on my last job I could never take any of them because of Covid restrictions.” The job in question is the How I Met Your Father series, which debuted on Disney+ this year. In the series, Sophie (Kim Cattrall in the future version, Duff in the present version), tells her son the story of how she met his father and the adventures with friends along the way. GRAZIA: What are the similarities and differences between you and Sophie, the character you play in How I Met Your Father? HILARY DUFF: The most obvious difference is the moment of life we are in. I have three children, a family, a career, responsibilities that she does not yet have. Personality-wise she has the classic New York spirit: sociable and always ready to party. I am sociable too, but I love being at home and I like going out with my inner circle, people who really know me. I’m not the most outgoing woman in the world and I believe Sophie is. We are both volcanoes of ideas though. My husband sometimes wakes up at 6:30 in the morning and by that time I have already moved half of the furniture in the house. G: Sophie is not very lucky with dating, have you ever had a really terrible first date? HD: Once, when I was much younger, I went out with a guy and at the end of the date he told me that it was an experiment, because he always felt intimidated by me and for a film he was working on, he had to play the role of a man intimidated by his woman. That was the reason why he went out with me. G: On the show How I Met Your Father, we see an adult Sophie telling her son the story of how she met his father. How do you relate to that? HD: I can tell the story to my eldest son, Luca. Because he is 10 years old, he is ready compared to his sisters to listen to those stories and to understand them. I had Luca with my ex-husband and we talk about it often. I like to tell him about how I met his father, about the good times we spent together, about the greatest joy when I found out I was pregnant and

how his father and I coped with pregnancy. It is a very sweet thing. As adults we forget how nice it was to hear our parents’ stories when we were children. G: And among the stories you told Luca, which one struck him the most? HD: My sister Haylie and I lived with our mother in a big complex as children. There were all child actors, and it was a gated community so we all knew each other. It was a very safe place and my sister and I were the leaders of the group. The security always scolded us for making noises and the neighbors complained all the time. So, one day my sister and I hid in the bushes, waited for the attendant to leave the office and covered his golf cart with tampons. When he came back, he pulled them off one by one and we laughed out loud behind the bushes. When I told this story to Luca, he was in disbelief. G: Does Luca like hearing these stories? HD: He’s at the age where he no longer wants me to read him stories before bed, he wants to know anecdotes, funny things I did at his age, the times I got in trouble, when I started shooting Lizzie McGuire at a very young age. He is a very curious child. He’s at home with us every other day, so I can’t tell him every night but twice a week on average. G: And what will you tell your daughters about your

GRAZIA USA

current husband? HD: That he asked me to marry him in a very sweet way: with an illustrated book that represented our story. We broke up several times before having our daughter Banks and the on and off translated into drawings is hilarious. G: You started your career very young. Did you ever feel like giving it up? HD: Sure, and I did. Around 18 I gave up everything. I had just finished a tour. I was in Europe, and after the last concert, I said, “Enough.” G: Why? HD: I didn’t know how to cook or start a washing machine. I didn’t even know what I liked and what I didn’t. I didn’t plan my day and I was never on my own. I had a fabulous career but I was no longer satisfied. My friends did normal things for that age, but I lived in a bubble and felt terrible. Not to mention the pressure I felt: I had about 200 people working for me on tours. I was responsible for their salaries. It was too much. I had to pull the plug to understand who I was, what I really wanted, and to learn to live alone. G: Then? HD: And then I stopped for longer than I thought. For two years I did nothing, then I met my first husband and later we had Luca and I focused on learning to be a mother. Taking

that break helped me become the humble woman I am today. I don’t think I would have kept my feet as firmly on the ground as I do today if I hadn’t taken that break then. G: What kind of child were you? HD: I was a tomboy. I liked climbing trees, being outdoors. I was reckless, but I never went out without makeup. At the age of three, my mother used to tell me, “You wear lipstick better than me, but you can climb higher than any boy.” I was very athletic. I enjoyed swimming, gymnastics, cycling. Before moving to Los Angeles, we lived in a small hill town. There wasn’t much to do, so I spent my day outdoors. And I loved to dance, to perform. I would say I was a good mix. Unlike my sister, who was very feminine, I wanted to be faster than the others. G: Then what kind of mother did you become? HD: I am very involved in my children’s lives. I am present. I like to play with them and listen to them. Don’t get me wrong; I’m also the one who imposes discipline in the house. It’s all fun and games until they cross certain limits. G: Such as? HD: Luca is a very good child. The only thing that infuriates me about him is how forgetful he can be. Every day I remind him to take his iPad, the books for school. I make him a packed lunch. I remind him to brush his teeth and put on his

39

shoes. It is a daily routine. I have always done these things for him every day, I have taught him, and he regularly forgets something. Often, I get a phone call from school informing me that Luca has forgotten his lunch. Mae is still too young, but my second daughter Banks will definitely give me a hard time. She is tough. Nothing really bothers her. G: For your last two girls, you chose a water birth at home. What made you choose that? HD: A friend of mine had decided to give birth at home, and as soon as she told me, I was speechless. I didn’t think it was doable. With Luca, I had the classic natural birth in the hospital with all the necessary medicines. I waited many years before I had Banks. I had her at 31 and I like to challenge myself, face something that scares me. So, I started doing research, watching documentaries. Childbirth is a different experience for every woman and I wanted to try this practice. Supported by my husband, I did it and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. G: Tell me about it. HD: It is obviously difficult and in some moments uncomfortable, but the aftermath is wonderful: being in your home surrounded by family, with the other children ready to welcome the newborn. When I had Mae, in the middle of the pandemic, I had no intention of going near a hospital anyway. G: And both of your children witnessed Mae’s birth? HD: They were supposed to, but Mae got out so fast they managed to get in when their little sister was already in my arms. It was a very sweet moment. Luca then came to sit next to me and Mae and said, “Mom, we should sing happy birthday to her. It’s her birthday.” G: What is the thing you most like to do with your children? HD: I like sitting in the backyard with them, watching them play, and become what they are becoming, listening to their stories, the things that interest them. And, it may sound strange to you, but I love being in the car with them. G: Why? HD: Because, if we don’t listen to music, they start talking to each other and sometimes very interesting topics come up. Banks creates incredible stories. The protagonists are always unicorns and school friends – she is three years old after all – but the plots she creates are crazy. Luca also talks about school. The last story he told me was about this child who has a crush on his girlfriend. Through another schoolmate, he sent her a note in which he asked her to break up with Luca and he made such a drama out of it. Imagine that once, when he was 9 years old, I took him to a football match and some little girls approached him. Luca asked me to stay where I was and not to follow him. He didn’t want to be seen with me in front of the girls. I can’t believe I’m already in that phase. G: Are there things you haven’t done that you would have wanted or still want to do? HD: Professionally, yes. I’m writing and sometimes I go to the recording studio, but I don’t know if it will be an album, an EP, or a song; but the idea excites me. And the thing I would like to do more than any other is to travel and take my family all over the world. I know that my career has allowed me to visit many destinations, but while working I have never really been able to enjoy the experience of discovering a place and I would like to do so. I would like to spend some time in Spain, Italy, go back to Africa. G: What do you wish for the future? HD: I hope to be even more confident. I’m in a moment in my life where I think I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Now I have more awareness than when I was younger. The family I have created with my husband gives me the confidence that I did not have before. I hope to have more and more. G: Do any of your children want to follow in your footsteps? HD: Luca is obsessed with Marvel. He is very creative; he likes to draw. I would not be surprised if he pursued a career in animation. Banks will be a singer, for sure. She is a born performer. She always wants to be the center of attention. Mae is too young, she is in that phase of “Let me eat and sleep and that is fine with me.”

A HOME VISIT

Inside Chris Benz’s Bellport Retreat

VOLUME TEN

The fashion designer turned home renovator opens the doors to his Bellport getaway. BY YALE BRESLIN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHRIS BENZ

I

inherited the name, but there’s a nice ring to it,” Chris Benz says on the moniker associated with his Bellport, New York home. “‘The Oaks’ is the name of the house. I don’t know if it’s the original name or when it got coined but there are a ton of beautiful oak trees on the property, so I like it.” In the last few years, there’s been a seasonal transition of sorts in Benz’s life: one from the world of designing clothes to his newfound passion (and profession) of creating dynamic and unique spaces. After growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Benz studied at Parsons School of Design. Then, while working under the direction of Marc Jacobs, took home the CFDA Emerging Designer Award. All eyes were on Benz. From his namesake collection, which debuted in 2007, he caught the eye of the global fashion houses due to his unfussy approach to getting a woman dressed. He’s since expanded his repertoire to expand his design vision to toys, beauty, television and – most importantly – interiors. Benz, who catapulted to fashion it-boy stardom in New York City, was recognized for this colorful and eclectic approach to American style. He interpreted fashion through his refreshed lens: designs infused with a carefree spirit that catered to the modern woman. It was pure sophistication infused with ease, and embedded within the DNA of his clothing was his ability to not take himself (or his clothes) too seriously. After all, he did dye his hair vibrant pink. To Benz, the move to interiors was a natural one. “To me, it’s all the same. It’s all about texture and proportion and I approach a space in the same way I do clothing,” Benz remarks. “It’s additive and so much editing is involved. The thing I like about rooms versus clothes is that there’s a lot more physical and emotional weight to it. Committing to a couch is a big deal and there’s a formula to how many couches you need. And then, like any good outfit, I accessorize. To me, a room is an outfit, just with a different approach.” With his partner Peter Toumbekis, Benz purchased the Victorian shingle-style property (and the three acres of greenery) in 2017 as they continued the weekend commute to and from their Brooklyn townhouse, enjoying three-day weekends in their maximalist retreat out East. Eventually, in 2020, their weekend and summer abode turned into their permanent home. Here,

Benz takes us inside his home and tells us about what makes the community so sacred, the benefits of a large dining (and working) table, and why the best pool parties always start at 10 PM. Dive in. What do you love most about Bellport? For starters, it’s an hour away from Manhattan. And that’s why I think people are dubious about talking about it because it’s such an amazing getaway and you can be in the city in 60 minutes. The proximity is remarkable. The town is quite small; you blink and you’ve driven through it. It’s such a picturesque and nice place to be and it’s incredibly charming. In fact, it’s really a fetishized version of country living and there are so many creative types and artists who live here that it seems everyone is on the same page to keep it as authentic as possible. That, in my opinion, is what’s so special about this small town. And what about the community? There isn’t a huge social scene. It’s all about farm stands and there are about two restaurants. It’s more about hopping around to people’s houses and in the summertime, it’s all about BBQ’s and pool parties. There’s this incredible Slim Aarons tongue-in-cheek quality to life here. We all seem to lean into the country aesthetic. Let’s talk a little bit about your home. It’s a maximalist’s dream! I moved in at the end of 2017. I bought this great home in Bed Stuy and renovated it and when I wanted to escape during the summer or on the weekends, I would come to Bellport. My boyfriend and I were looking everywhere for a home outside of NYC and I’m not afraid of a project or a big renovation. I grew up near the ocean so being near water was super important to me. Initially, we looked at a 1700’s English Country house that was around the corner from where I’m living now. It was a house that was way outside of our budget but I thought, Why not? Lt’s go take a look. The second we drove in, we knew it had to be ours and we’d have to figure out a way to make it work. It’s a big piece of property that is quite rare for the neighborhood and initially we only used it as a weekend out. We’d drive out and we’d dedicate a day to a certain task - painting the living room, working on the cabinets and so on. I realized I was so much happier when I was in Bellport and the drive to the city was so easy. We decided to sell our place in Bed Stuy and make Bellport our permanent home. We sold and closed within 30 days and here we are. What is it about the space that you find unique?

It’s quite unique that it’s an almost untouched Victorian farmhouse. It doesn’t have any big extensions added to the back or any crazy structural changes over the years. It’s very pure. The only thing that’s been added are some postmodern windows towards the back of the house that were done before my time but that’s something I can deal with. I love that it’s been preserved and in its original incarnation. Do you have a favorite part of the house? I like the dining room, which has also turned into my office during the daytime. I love working at a big table where I can spread all my stuff out. And now that I’m working on other people’s houses, I have so many strange swatches and tiles that I can spread out. The room is also so comfortable and it lets me be as creative in the space as I can. Each and every item in the house exists because it’s inspirational to me and has some beloved quality to it. Many of which I can see from this room. Everyone who has been to The Oaks leaves feeling something ineffable. It’s impossible not to. Do you want them to leave feeling a certain way? I want them to feel inspired and that they just walked into what I’ve always dreamed would be my fantasy of a country house. There are so many different versions of how country living can be interpreted, but I want people to respond to the fabrics and the textures. What’s the best compliment someone could give you about your space? It’s very comfortable. There is often a fuss about old houses and I don’t want anyone to feel like things are too precious. I want anyone to just plop down and feel totally comfortable. The gardens are remarkable. What’s the upkeep like? The nice thing is that everything is so old that I don’t have to do a lot. It’s a lot of self-sustaining and naturalizing. It’s more about maintenance. We have so many deer that every summer it’s like full on ‘deer assault.’ Our garden is like their salad bar; they just go for it. Every Spring and Summer I want to go wild with the nursery, but the deer will just have their way with it immediately. Little known fact: Deer love a tulip! What are the key ingredients to a Chris Benz pool party? Hmmm. A free-flowing serve-yourself bar. Loads of towels. I love having big baskets of towels. And, no hard outs. I always feel like the best pool parties start at 10 pm and that’s when everyone gets in the pool.
