Hello! W

ith 2016 behind us and 2017 before us, it’s nice to take a look back at the past year and reflect on all that God has done. 2016 has been a great year for Anointed. God gave me the dream of creating a teen fashion magazine that would honor Him and show His daughters their beauty in Christ. For three years I put this dream on hold while pursuing my college degree. Then, in the fall of 2015, I started making Anointed into a reality. It began with a logo and some photos from a photo shoot I did with some friends. A few months later it led to the publication of the first issue of Anointed on January 1, 2016. A year later, Anointed is still going strong thanks to all of you wonderful readers, but most importantly, thanks to Jesus. He has allowed for my wonderful business partner Rob Himmelwright and me to create a magazine that is a different fashion magazine from ones on the market--for all the right reasons. Anointed is more than a fashion magazine: it’s a magazine with Christ at the center. It is our hope that you come away from reading Anointed with a more positive outlook and love for yourself and Christ. You, sweet reader, are beautiful and priceless to the King of Kings. Thank you for supporting this ministry. Please share this magazine with your friends and continue to pray for Rob and me as we reach more girls with the message of Christ-centered, fashion-forward. Your sister-in-Christ,

Emilee Burroughs Founder and Editor-in-Chief

Beating The Winter Blues You may have heard of “the winter blues” before and thought that it wasn’t a real thing. But it turns out that it is very much real and affects between 10 and 20% of Americans, with teenagers and women being more at risk of experiencing the winter blues (“Winter Blues/ Seasonal Affective Disorder,” Villanova University). Shorter daylight hours, less sunlight and the end of the holidays can affect your mood and make you feel “blue” with symptoms like fatigue, irritability, less energy, among others. Sunlight, melatonin (the “sleep hormone”), serotonin (“hormone associated with wakefulness and elevated mood”) and Vitamin D also play a role in your mood. Here are some helpful ways to beat the winter blues.

Get sunlight

Sunlight produces serotonin, a hormone that improves your mood. If you don’t get enough sunlight, your level of serotonin can fall. Take a walk outside or sit next to a window that lets in a lot of light to get your daily dose of sunlight. Make sure to wear sunscreen when outside, especially during the peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV rays are the strongest (“What are the benefits of sunlight?” Heathline.com).

Exercise regularly

There are so many benefits of exercise, such as boosting your energy, helping to control your weight and helping your mood (“Exercise: 7 benefits of regular physical activity,” MayoClinic.org). Keep those winter blues at bay by registering for a membership to a nearby gym or signing up for a class at your local YMCA. If treadmills and elliptical machines aren’t your thing, many gyms offer fun classes like Zumba and yoga. Something as simple as taking your dog for a walk in your neighborhood can make a huge impact on your overall health and wellbeing. If it’s too cold outside for a walk or you don’t have enough money for a gym membership, you can buy a workout DVD from Walmart for ten bucks. Find a workout routine that you enjoy and do it a couple times a week.

3

Hang out with friends

When you’re feeling down-in-the-dumps, it’s easy to isolate yourself. But when you do, you make yourself feel worse rather than better. Spending time with your friends can make a huge difference in your mood. Tell your friends how you feel so that they can be there to support you.

4

Spend time with Jesus

Spending time praying and reading your Bible really does help. Christ teaches us how to have joy in Him despite how we’re feeling. Talk to Him about your winter blues and ask Him to give you His joy. That being said, sometimes our feelings of sadness remain for extended periods of time despite how much we pray. This does NOT mean that you are a “bad” Christian or that you don’t have enough faith. It could mean that you may need professional counseling, and there is no shame in that. If your winter blues persist, talk to your parents and schedule an appointment with a counselor.

Beautiful You

Applying Scripture to Your Daily Beauty Routine Makeup by Ann Jacobs, Mary Kay Consultant Adapted from “A Beautiful Woman in Christ” by Julia Bettencourt, which can be found online at JuliaBettencourt.com

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” -1 Peter 3:3-4

What is “true beauty”? According to our society, it’s having the perfect body, nice hair and a pretty face. But what does God say true beauty is? According to 1 Peter 3:3-4, true beauty is found in a woman’s “gentle and quiet spirit.” Having “a gentle and quiet spirit” means taking the time to nurture and care for your relationship with God. Taking care of your body and skin is important, too. Having a daily beauty routine that takes care of your skin draws parallels to taking care of your spirit.

1. Cleanser

The first step in your beauty routine is to wash your face to get rid of all the gunk and impurities on your skin. Similarly, we need to cleanse ourselves of our sins. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

2. Moisturizer

Moisturizing your spirit means softening your heart towards others by having compassion. “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference” (Jude 21-22). Find a moisturizer that works best for your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, look for an oil-free moisturizer that is specially designed for your skin’s needs. Moisturize your skin in the morning and at night for soft, radiant skin!

3. Foundation

Having a good foundation for your faith starts with reading the Word of God daily and spending time alone with God. “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). There are tons of different foundations available to choose from: liquid, powder, cushion, BB cream and many more. Pick the one that provides you with the level of coverage you want. If you want light coverage, go with a BB cream. For more coverage, choose a heavier foundation. Make sure that whichever foundation you choose has SPF in it to keep your skin protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Next, apply concealer anywhere that needs extra coverage, such as under your eyes and on top of acne. The last step is to set your foundation with translucent powder.

4. Blush

For a radiant glow, ask the Holy Spirit to shine through you and to show His love to the people you meet. “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). Taking a blush brush, lightly swirl it on your blush and tap off any excess. (You want to gradually build up your blush so that you don’t look like a clown.) Smile and apply the blush to the apples of your cheeks. You can also extend the blush to your temples to highlight your cheekbones. Winter 2017

5. Eye Makeup

The saying goes, “The eyes are the window to the soul.” So take care of your eyes by protecting them from seeing things that aren’t pleasing to God. “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). First apply an eyelid primer to keep your eyeshadow from creasing throughout the day. Next, apply a lighter shade to your brow bone and a medium shade to your eyelid. Then take a darker shade and apply it to your crease with windshield wiper movements to define the shape of your eyes. For small eyes and hooded eyes, apply eyeliner to the bottom lash line and a light eyeshadow to the inner corner to open up your eyes. For round eyes and bigger eyes, you can either apply eyeliner to the top of your lash line or on the bottom waterline. (Keep in mind that these are just suggestions and not rules. If you have small eyes and want to draw on a cat-eye, go for it! Makeup is meant to be fun.) Next, apply mascara to your lashes.

6.L ipstick

Use your lips to praise God’s name! “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you” (Psalm 63:3). Start by exfoliating your lips with a sugar lip scrub. (Here’s an easy DIY lip scrub recipe: take a spoonful of granulated sugar and mix it with a spoonful of coconut oil. Apply it to your lips and gently scrub in a circular motion. Simply wipe away the sugar with a tissue, and that’s it!) Keep your lips hydrated and protected by applying a lip balm with SPF. (A lip balm also acts as a base for your lipstick.) Then use a lip liner to keep your lipstick from feathering. Finish the look with a swipe of lipstick, lip gloss, lip crayon or tinted lip balm.

Meet the Models

Miranda Woodall

I just completed high school this past December, and I’ll be attending Truett McConnell College in the fall to study business. Right now, I’m working at The Walking Dead store in Senoia, Georgia. When I’m not working, I enjoy hiking and hanging out with my friends. My favorite verse for this season of my life is Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Right now, I feel like my life is in a season of change. This verse reminds me that through all of the changes in life, I have Christ, who is forever constant.

Maggie Bryson

I’m currently attending Georgia Military College to earn my associate’s degree. I then plan on going to Georgia College and State University, where I will major in middle school education. I really believe that God is calling me to be a middle school counselor. My favorite verse is definitely Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” This verse reminds me that no matter what is happening in my life--and no matter how crazy and uncomfortable my life feels--God is in control. He knows what He’s doing, even if I don’t.
