editor’s note
Dear reader,
Peace
Can you believe it’s already 2018? It’s crazy how fast time flies by! I hope that 2017 was a wonderful year for you. More importantly, I hope it was a year of growth, a year of challenging yourself to try new things, and a year of trusting God. I don’t know about you, but this year has been marked by a lot of change and uncertainty for me, having graduated from college and trying to figure out what the next stage of my life should be. The uncertainty of the future sent me into a downward spiral of anxiety. There were times when the anxiety was so great that I cried out to God for help and deliverance. He then calmed me down with His love and with His peace, and it’s His love and peace that gives me freedom from my fears and anxious thoughts. Psalm 29:11 says, “The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.” The word “peace” is my mantra for 2018. Having peace this year doesn’t mean that trials and hardships won’t come because they will. It means that when hardships come my way this year, I will choose to rest in the Lord and trust that He is taking care of me. When I’m feeling anxious, broken or distraught, I will turn to God and give Him my fears in exchange for His love and peace. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). My prayer for you is that you will find joy and peace in the new year. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal a word — joy, peace, love, hope, faith, etc. — to you for this year and claim that word as His promise for you in 2018. May 2018 be a year of new beginnings! Your sister in Christ,

beauty on a BUDGET Text and photos by Morgan Forte
Sometimes we convince ourselves that only luxurious and expensive makeup products can perform well and give us the outcome we want. However, some drugstore products are cheaper and do just as well, if not better, than a lot of makeup that Sephora has. Let’s be honest, when you’re out of a job because school takes up all your time, you’re probably not going have money to spend left and right on more expensive brands. (Trust me, I’ve been there.) That’s why this makeup look is so practical — each product costs $15 or less. Every item that I used to created this look can be found at your local Target, Walmart, CVS and Walgreens.
Eyes Step 1: Using the new Maybelline City Mini “Downtown Sunrise” Eyeshadow Palette ($10), I put the lightest brown shade in my crease as my transition color. Step 2: I went in with my Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer to further deepen the contour of my crease. Step 3: Using the same Maybelline Palette, I took the darkest brown shade and applied it to the outer third of my eyelid to help open the eyes and make them appear a little bit bigger and more awake. Step 4: I took the Maybelline single eyeshadow in “The Glow Down” and applied it to the middle third of my eyelid. Step 5: Going back into the Maybelline “Downtown Sunrise” Palette, I took the light golden shade and applied it to the inner third of my lid to brighten up the inner corner of the eye and make the eye appear bigger. Step 6: Taking the Milani Stay Put Waterproof Black Eyeliner, I applied it to my upper waterline below the lashes to create more dimension. Step 7: I went back into the darkest brown shade in the Maybelline Palette and put it on my lower lash line. Step 8: I applied the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara to both my top and lower lashes.
Lips Because the eyes are more neutral, I wanted to pair them with a bold lip color. However, you can use whatever color makes you feel confident. There are no rules! Step 1: To line my lips I used the NYX Slide On, Glide On Lipliner in “Red Tape/Ruban Rouge.” Step 2: I applied the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creme in “Monte Carlo” all over my lips. 10

Eyes
Step 1: I applied a light brown/tan eyeshadow into my crease as my transition color. Step 2: I applied two deeper warm brown eyeshadows directly on top of the transition color in the crease. I focused these a tad bit lower than the transition color so that the shadows fade from bottom to top, getting lighter as you get higher. Step 3: I applied a dark brown eyeshadow on the outer third of my eyelid in order to add depth and smokiness. Step 4: I applied a turquoise eyeshadow to my entire lid, but I did not apply it above the crease. I built up the color until I reached the intensity that I wanted. Step 5: Taking a blender brush, I blended the dark brown outer corner into the turquoise using a dark navy eyeshadow. Step 6: In order to blend everything together, I went back in with the same eyeshadow shade I used as my transition shade and went over all the colors in my crease in order to make sure everything is blended seamlessly. Step 6: I applied the navy eyeshadow into my bottom waterline in order to add color. Step 7: I applied the same dark brown I used on the outer lid and just applied it on my lower lash line. Step 8: I applied some of the Urban Decay Glitter Liner into my inner corner in order to add a little bit more drama. You can skip this step and apply something more subtle if you aren’t comfortable with wearing glitter. Step 9: I applied black gel liner to my upper lash line and created a wing. Since the eye look is already pretty dramatic, you don’t have to apply liner. Step 10: I applied some mascara and then put on some false eye lashes in order to open up the eyes and create even more drama. You can also skip the lashes if you aren’t comfortable with them. You can instead apply 2-3 layers of mascara for extra volume.
Lips
Step 1: Because the eyes are the main focus of the look, I want to keep the lip neutral. However, you can use whatever color you want. I applied a nude lip liner in order to give my lip a bit more definition, and then I applied a nude liquid lipstick on top.

irrors — not only are they dangerous to mythical vampires, but also to teenage girls. Ever since middle school, I’ve tried to be the girl. You know: the girl with all the newest trends, most dramatic makeup and the longest hair. You get the picture. Throughout the years, I’d try so hard to gain acceptance from everyone I met but always came up dry, empty. Right now you’re probably expecting some sort of amazing revival story, so quick disclaimer — I’m still working on it. But let me share with you what God has taught me so far. God has shown me that beauty is on the inside. OK, I know you’ve heard this many times. But when are we going to realize how true it is? If who we are on the inside is how people see us, what would they see? This year I was in one of the darkest places I have ever been in, struggling with an eating disorder.* Weight has been something I struggled with since I was 10-years-old. At 10 my father made it clear that he did not think I was worth his money, his time or his love. Because of this, I ran to food instead of to God. Food was tangible — I could experience it with all five senses. At that point it was easier to just hide from God. If an imperfect, worldly and unloving father didn’t want me, what would make me think that a perfect, all-powerful Father would want me? If we measure our beauty by our own standards, how will we ever be content? What made me realize my worth is the account of the Samaritan woman at the well in the John 4. As much as I didn’t want to admit it, this woman and I both had a lot in common. First off, we both tried to satisfy ourselves with other things besides God. While she tried to fill herself with men, I tried to fill myself with food. The most important similarity between us is that nothing was working. It wasn’t until Jesus filled her, a sinful woman who felt like she was worthless, that she became a new person. I desperately wanted this change in my life. I was saved when I was 5-years-old, but I had never truly given God my all. I never felt true brokenness. As painful as it sounds, brokenness was one of the best things that ever happened because God reached down and put me back together when I surrendered. He didn’t put me back into the hurting, depressed and confused girl I once knew, but into a content, surrendered and truly beautiful daughter, His daughter. I stopped my horrible eating habits, and the weight has been falling off, just like the coverings I used to hide under.

My Favorite Type of Day by Genesis Greenlee
It’s when you look at the sky and see the clouds passing by. A little before the day begins and a little after it ends. Most refer to it as a sunrise or set, but no, that is not what I meant. I mean the sky itself, not much anything else. The colors it creates that no artist can make. With the sun peeking in and out of the sky as it slowly waves goodbye. Huge clouds once painted a simple white, their true colors are shown in the night. So I sit and wait just to see the colors that only God can paint. Clouds are just moving pictures on a painted sky, telling their stories as the minutes pass by. One about a boy on a mighty steed, running off to a princess in need. Another about a ship sailing the waves, looking for the treasures hidden in a cave. So every night I look up high and let all the new adventures fill my eyes. Because as soon as they drift away, I would have to wait again for another day

finances
to a $ticking Budget by Nakia Guy
Hi, smart, beautiful and confident reader! I have a gift for you. This gift is priceless and it never expires, but you have to keep reading to receive it. Depending on the series of decisions and purchases you’ve made back in December for Christmas shopping, you may or may not have any money left because you may or may not have stuck to your budget. Either way, I have a gift for you that will truly change your financial life forever if you chose to use it. This gift is the gift of knowledge. It’s priceless and can be received by anyone. All of my financial knowledge comes from years of personal experience and has made my life a million times easier and stress-free. So, right now I want you to daydream about the life you want to live in the next two-to-four years (which is right around the corner). Where do you want to be? Do you want the freedom to make decisions for yourself ? Do you want to be able to go on multiple trips throughout the year? Do you want to go to college? I bet that 90% of your goals are obtained with the use of money. With that being said, money is a very useful tool that can be used to get you where you want to be. So, here’s how you set a budget and easily stick to it: first, earn at least $400+ per month working, only touch $150 of your earnings each month, and let the rest of your earnings accumulate in your bank account. Basically, pretend that your bank account is a singer’s voice and the higher it is, the more money you have in savings. As for me, I want my “singing bank account” to be Mariah Carey-high! Have this mentality and you will instantly be on your way to financial freedom.
Making a Budget Making a budget is as simple as writing down your total income (after taxes are taken out) and then listing and subtracting your total expenses.
Tithe 10% of your total income to church and put some of your income in savings. If you can’t put $210 into your savings account because of other expenses, no wor ries! Set aside what you can in savings.

by Emilee Burroughs
Did you make a New Year’s resolution to exercise but have no idea where to start? Look no further! Here are three simple workouts to tone and strengthen your arms, core and legs. All you need is a resistance band, which can be found at Walmart, Target and any sporting goods store.
1
arms
1. Place the middle of the resistance band under your right foot and lunge your left leg behind you. Hold the ends of the band in your hands and place your arms out to your side. 2. Curl your arms up to the height of your shoulders. Bring your arms back down to Step 1. Repeat 10 times. 3. Switch the band to the other side. Step your left foot onto the middle of the band and lunge your right leg back. Hold the ends of band in your hands and put your arms out to your side. Repeat Step 2.

Agapao Love
by Miriam Hope Williams
Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” The word “love” in this verse means to prefer. It comes from the Greek word agapao [ag-ap-ah-o] which means to love, to take pleasure in, to long for and to esteem. For God, this word means that He chooses and prefers to love us because we are His children. As a child of God, this verse means that you should prefer to love God above all else and pursue a whole relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. A true relationship is not something that you do on a checklist or live up to according to someone else’s expectations. To prefer something or someone is to do so by choice, not by force or intimidation — this is true love. When you choose God (agapao), you’re in! Your relationship has started and the most important thing you can do is this: be faithful because this is a relationship and relationships take work from both sides. God has already done His part. In your faithfulness, you’re making a daily commitment to singleness (unity) with God. Make the following declarations your personal watchwords to stay single (in union) with God:
God, I love You (Mark 12:30). I choose You (Psalm 119:30). I prefer You (John 14:15). I choose Your ways (Isaiah 55:8) I choose Your will (Ephesians 5:15-17). I choose to obey (1 Samuel 15:22). I submit to You (James 4:7)
This is an act of surrender, and God loves you for it. And don’t feel like it’s loneliness to be in union with God because it is just the opposite. A relationship with God can beautifully orchestrate all your other relationships. To some people, this sounds like the beginning of a boring life following rules and standards they’ll never achieve and being judgmental hypocrites. But it’s not.
18
Anointed
Here’s the thing — once you experience God’s love, you won’t want to choose or prefer anything else because God’s love for you is matchless, genuine and true. It may get hard sometimes, but Jesus says in John 4:26 that he gives us the Holy Spirit as our Helper. In John 14:21 Jesus says, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father (God) and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” You see, God doesn’t just show up in your life and say, “I love you,” then leave. He wants to stay, to abide. This is so unlike a lot of people in life and relationships today. I don’t mean to point a finger at anyone in your life; I only mean to say that God’s character is not like ours as humans. People change, but God doesn’t. He’s God. He doesn’t make mistakes or do things half-hearted. So when He chose you, it was by choice — not by accident, by random, by coincidence, luck, or chance. God doesn’t need those things. He doesn’t need the stars to be in line to love you because He made them and you! Sometimes it’s hard to be loved. We don’t feel worthy. We hear the words, “Jesus loves you,” but it almost sounds insignificant because the person holding the sign or telling us so doesn’t know how we feel or what we’ve been through. The truth is, God does know and He still loves you. The Bible says that God loved you first, before you were even born (1 John 4:10) and while you were still a sinner (Romans 5:8). God’s love is so unconditional that He has moved every obstacle and wall to get to you by the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. God desires to perfect and refine you with His love. God wants you to be-loved [beloved]. He wants you to receive His love even though you don’t feel like you deserve it — that’s what grace is. That’s what Jesus did when He died for you. Remember this: God doesn’t want you to just be loved; He wants you to stay there, in His love. He wants you to abide in His love daily, reminding yourself to revel in the truth that nothing can change how highly He thinks of you. He wants to be a part of your life by being your Lord and Savior. Jesus says in John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father (God) in my name, He may give it to you.” God has long desired to have an abiding relationship with you through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the way to God and all His love for you. When you choose to have a relationship with God, you choose life more abundantly and full of purpose. God loves you because He made you (Psalm 139:14) and He is jealous for you (Exodus 34:14). If you seek Him with your whole heart (prefer Him, choose Him and love Him over any other), you will indeed find him. Amen.

Megan Hendrix
A Life Well Lived by Melissa R. Edwards
M
My sister, Megan Hendrix, died in March of 2017 and had Cerebral Palsy. She had an impact on so many people’s lives, and I really plan to do all I can for her legacy to continue. I started writing this article from her perspective before she died and finished it after her passing. I want to share her story so others’ lives can also be impacted by Megan’s life.
y name is Megan Hendrix, and I am 31-yearsold. My twin sister, Melissa, and I were born two months premature, and as a result I have Cerebral Palsy. My life wasn’t much different from that of a typical baby or child — I played with toys, I played with my sisters and other kids at times, watched TV and other things that all kids enjoy. I loved that I got to do extra fun things that other kids my age didn’t get to do, such as all the fun things I did in therapy. I am considered “nonverbal,” so from an early age speech therapy helped me show others how I could communicate in my own special way. I had so much fun discovering that! I would keep my eyes closed a lot, but through vision therapy, I was able to have even more fun as I discovered opening my eyes to see the world around me. Those were just two of many therapies I looked forward to every week because I loved learning new things. From an early age my sister and I would sing songs like “Jesus Loves Me” and “Jesus Loves the Little Children.” I would say my prayers before we ate or at bedtime like any other child. When we started going to church, I always knew what was going on, from games to stories. Sometimes I wanted to do things other than sit and listen to the teacher; I usually got my point across and, unlike most children, I would get my way and get to do something else. I enjoyed learning Bible stories and would remember them. Some people thought I did not understand because I was in a wheelchair and was nonverbal. That was OK, though; I understood more than most kids my age. I knew that God loved me and He sent His Son to die for my sins. One may look at me and think I couldn’t do anything wrong, but that’s not true. I would have

tantrums like any other child, and I would not listen and ignore authority if I wanted to. When I started school, I would get notes sent home for not doing what I was told, just like my sister would. As I got older I would sit in “big church” sometimes and would sing along. However, many people couldn’t understand what I was singing and may have thought I was “making noise.” But God knew what I was singing because He knew my heart better than anyone. I would pray out loud and others that were close to me could tell it was sincere. But most of the time they had no idea what I was praying for, but God always knew. I have a special relationship with God that no one else could ever imagine. He created me. I am a princess because my Father is the King of Kings! As I got older, I continued to learn more and more about the love God has for me. There were times when things got hard, but I knew I could pray and have peace about it. My older teenage years of life started to get tough — I started having seizures and had to get a feeding tube because I lost the ability to eat. Despite this, I still knew God loved me and would take care of me. My life no longer was the life of a “typical teen,” but it is the life I know God has given me. God also gave me a twin sister that is my best friend. Through her, I experienced things that otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to, like typical “teen things” and things that go on in the life of someone in their 20’s. I got to be a part of my sister’s engagement and wedding. I was even there when she had her first ultrasound and found out I would have a nephew. I am so blessed to have experienced these things!
Above: My pastor, Paul Leslie, baptized me in my bathtub as a statement of my faith in Jesus Christ. Top right: My twin sister Melissa is also my best friend!
I got baptized when I was 24-years-old. Getting baptized was something I had been wanting to do, but I wasn’t sure how it would be possible. I had accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior and really wanted to take this next step. My pastor and one of my favorite people, Paul Leslie, came to my house and baptized me in my bathtub while my family and a few close friends watched. It was a dream come true for me! As I got older, my life consisted of doctor appointments, medicine, a lot of medical issues and hospital stays. But I still knew that God loved me and had a plan for my life. I continued to learn about His unconditional love for me through my mother’s love. My mom has displayed the love of God every day of my life as she cared for me around the clock. She is the most selfless person I know and has shown me what commitment and compassion look like. Through her example, I see the commitment and compassion God has for me. Even as I got sick I knew God had a plan and was in control. I would listen to sermons from church, sing at home or in the car and would always pray. I knew He had a purpose for my life, and I longed for the day that He would say, ‘’Well done, good and faithful servant.” I knew that one day all the pain I
had experienced in my life would make sense. Now, everything makes sense! I am in Heaven with Jesus; I have been told, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” I am no longer in pain and am no longer sick. I can now walk, dance, talk and be free. I understand that, although my life wasn’t always easy, God was in control and used me to impact many lives. I also had the opportunity to show God’s love to others in a way that no one else could.

Bios Tiffany Gilmer Hello! My name is Tiffany Gilmer, and I’m a 15-year-old in the ninth grade. I attend Heritage Baptist Church in Locust Grove, Georgia. My favorite Bible verse is Psalm 46:5, “God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.” My mentor is my mom because she steers me right in God’s way to do and be good.
Nakia Guy Nakia Guy is a 20-year-old Certified Financial Coach and college student. She majors in business management and minors in chemistry. These days, you can find her playing piano for her church’s youth choir, teaching others how to increase their bank account balance and travelling with her family and friends. Nakia is currently developing a financial education tech company called Financially Free By 23 to empower high school and college students to be financially free. Her favorite Scripture, by no surprise, is on the topic of money and comes from 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” This Scripture proves that money itself is not evil — the love of it is. And her goal is to teach others not to love money but to appreciate what it can do for their lives.
Genesis Greenlee I am a 16-year-old sophomore in high school and enjoy reading, writing, listening to ‘80s music and playing video games. I’m currently writing a novel on Wattpad called “Love From a Window,” which I am very proud of and grateful for how popular it’s getting. For me, writing is a way to express my opinions and feelings when speaking it out loud may not get my point across. My favorite verse is Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” This verse has stuck with me since childhood and still brings me comfort in my high school years. I know that any problem or danger that may come my way will never hurt me because God has me covered 24/7 and would never put me in a situation that I’m not ready to handle. 22

Morgan Forte My name is Morgan Forte, and I am currently a sophomore in college. I started my college journey at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, but after the fall semester I decided to move back home to Nashville, Tennessee. All throughout high school I didn’t really feel like I had a talent at anything besides art. I spent most of my time outside of school painting, drawing or just finding new ways to be creative. Making friends has been somewhat hard for me because I am a little shy, so while others were going out on Friday nights, I was at home. I discovered YouTube makeup channels one night during my sophomore year of high school was instantly hooked. That’s where my love for makeup started. As weird as it sounds, makeup became somewhat of my safe haven and allowed me to escape all my problems. The past year has been a long journey filled with anxiety, depression and confusion. I wasn’t sure what I was going to study at college, but God soon opened up a door of opportunity for me. I felt like He was pointing me to makeup. I decided to start my own YouTube channel (Morgan Forte), and ever since then I have felt more at ease and more trusting in His plan for my life. My plan is to go to esthetician school after I finish up this coming spring semester. My goal for my channel and the makeup that I share is to provide an escape from school, homework, work or any problems where women can come to just relax and get inspired. I hope you guys enjoy!
Miriam Hope Williams My name is Miriam Hope Williams. I am the third born of seven children and am 22-years-old. I thoroughly enjoy writing, reading God’s amazing Word, leadership, mentoring middle schoolers, teaching martial arts, baking homemade bread, running, photography, drinking coffee, chocolate, drinking more coffee, dark chocolate and far too many other things to list in a bio! “For such a time as this!” these words come from the scripture Esther 4:14 in the Holy Bible. These six words characterize me so well that they have become my “watch-words” and life verse. These words strike me because I believe God is intricately detailed in how He desires to use us as He used Esther in the Bible. After studying Esther’s story when I was 14, my personal prayer has been to grow into the young woman God desires me to be so He can use me to be a modern-day Esther. The Lord has given me a heart for people and a passion for leadership and entrepreneurship. My desire is to use my gifts and education to minister to young girls through my ministry, Young Esther Ministries, supported by my mission-minded business, Queen Esther Jewelry and Designs.
Shyanne Glerum Hi, my name is Shyanne Glerum! I am a Christian musician and poet. After high school, I hope to attend the University of Georgia. I have had a rough childhood, and because of that I feel God is calling me to the medical field, specifically therapy. A Bible verse I wish to share is James 1:2-3, “Count it all joy my brethren when you fall into diverse temptations, for the trying of your faith produces patience.” Blessings, you’re friend, Shyanne!
