Human strength:
This type of garment is worn practically by police or in professions that are fight against the bad in society. Therefore, this garment connotes strength.
Exposure:
This garment that in my opinion best described as a stab vest could be seen as a sense of human weakness. The human skin cannot protect the body from man-made products such as being stabbed or shot.

This became a focused issue within 2020 as a black man named George Floyd was attacked a killed by a police officer by kneeling on his neck after while being arrested outside a shop in America. This issue brought to light the discrimination and police brutality that black people face. This incident was filmed and went viral creating outrage around the world. This led to the Black Lives Matter protests.

In 2019 the anonymous artist Banksy created a creative stab vest that was designed with a un-ion jack on the front. He designed this and asked the British rap artist Stormzy to wear it for his Glastonbury performance that would be seen by millions. This was a statement piece that drew attention towards the knife-crime and racial inequality in the criminal justice system.

Garments that are named utility vests have a similar style to the stab vests that are used by police and the armed forces. These have become popular in men’s streetwear particularly for festivals. Similar garments are also sold in women’s wear such as on Boohoo but don’t seem as popular as menswear. This garment also reminds me of the Gillet which has become popular again at the end on 2020 to 2021 with the increase in users on the platform, tiktok, it has become a trend to show off Zara hauls which shows the range of Gillet’s Zara have. The North Face Gillet has also become popular which also reminds me of this garment.

This type of garment has been seen in fashion retailers and designers in recent years with adaptations. This garment reminds me of the blazer that has been popular in women’s fashion recently. Designers such as Gucci and Versace have also designed jackets like this one.
For The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album they wore brightly coloured blazer type garments which are very similar to this garment. Other celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift and Cheryl Cole wore a similar garment while preforming on stage.

My first thoughts when I saw this garment was the link to the nutcracker outfit. It also re-minded me of the staff that stand outside Hamley’s, the famous toy store in London, dressed as the nutcracker. This also has a link to Christmas and celebrations which linked to the Macey’s parade in America.

My Chosen Garment For my showcase module I want to create a piece that reflects my personality and interests through the research and development and finally the final piece. When looking though the set garments I noted down my initial ideas for each garment and what these ideas mean to me on a more personal level. Therefore, after gathering my initial thoughts the stab proof vest and the band jacket then look my interest and sprouted more ideas in regard to research and final outcome possibilities. In recent years I have took interest in crime that takes place within our society which include knife crime, terrorism and violent protests. Not only have I taken more interest in real life crime but also police dramas that investigate murders and acts of violent crime. Therefore, the stab vest would allow me to use my interest in crime through my research and create a more meaningful connection with my final piece.
8
The second garment that took my interest was the band jacket. My initial ideas led me to create a mood board based on the ideas of the USA, toys and royalty. Ever since I visited Orlando Florida in 2014, I have had an interest in the American Culture compared to English Culture. Their way of life, laws, cuisine and their famous Disney World attractions creates a very exaggerated reality to British Life in which I continue to explore. Furthermore, the idea of royalty that I also linked to the garment is a very stereotypically British which juxtaposes the ideas of America. This idea of looking at British Royalty and American Disney stems a different idea for themes of American compared to British Culture, What Royalty is really like and the ideas of Children’s Toys. Therefore, I am going to base my showcase on the band jacket.
After exploring my initial ideas, I want to proceed with the theme of royalty through princesses. I will explore how royalty is portrayed through fiction and non-fiction comparing Disney and The British Royal Family to create an end product that links with my ideas of being a Prince/Princess. Throughout my research I will explore what it means to be part of the Royal Family but also what it means to be a princess in the British Royal Family, by looking at the interview from Princess Diana and more recently Meghan Markle. I will then compare it to the way Disney portrays Princesses in their films. I will then look at modern twists of the Disney characters from live action films created by Disney but also modern-day twists of the traditional fairy-tale stories. I will then explore fashion designers that use the style of princess dresses for red carpets. These elements of research will allow me to create an idea for a final piece on what makes a princess.

I also started to look other countries royal families such as Sweden. This royal wedding prince’s outfit was slightly different but still fitted the traditional of the rest of the royal wedding around the world.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana 1981 I firstly looked at the Royal wedding of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and their wedding, then I looked at our current Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip’s wedding, then Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge and 10Prince Harry and The Duchess of Sussex.
I also looked at a Spanish Royal wedding which the Prince’s also wear the traditional outfit.

Disney have portrayed Disney Prince’s in different ways such as a Beast, a street thief known as Aladdin, and more traditional princes in Cinderella and Snow White.

Snow White Disney Film 1937
The idea of a royal and wealthy esence that I felt from the garment led to link this idea with Disney and their portrayal of Prince’s. From my initial research of Cinerella Disney Castle real life royalty and Disney Aladin Disney Film 1992 fantasy royalty I have found an interest in the portayal of princesses from real life and Disney. Therefore look into the idea of what makes a princess.

Each Disney Prince/ Princess plot ends with a happy ending and usually a royal wedding where the price would wear a more traditional outfit and the princess wears a beautiful dress.

A Modern Day Princess The idea of what makes a princess has adapted not just throughout time but through the age an individual growing up. As a child the word princess meant a slim, beautiful women who lived a life a luxury with the most gorgeous dresses and shoes and married their prince charming and lived happily ever after in their palace. The idea of a Disney princesses was a fairy tale of royalty creating an elevation of happiness through fantasy. At a young age it was most little girls dream to be a princess who wore a beautiful dress and tiara and find their prince charming (Hains, 2016). Disney has been scrutinised for their lack of female power and independence in their traditional Disney princesses being saved by the prince. However, in modern day Disney we have seen a movement in which Disney Princesses hold more power over the men and almost portraying a female dominance and feminist movement (Gray, 2019). The idea of a princess that was created by Disney and implanted in a child’s head from a young age slowly becomes a clear fiction as they grow up. Although this idea becomes a fiction, the real-life royalty runs parallels between the ideas that have been drilled into our heads when we were young and how we imagine the life a British Royalty be to. The love life of the British Princes and Princesses is shared with the rest of the world as it becomes a worldwide event at a royal wedding. I believe this interest that the world has for the royal family links to Disney’s role in creating an image of what a princess should be. The British Royalty are seen to live a life of luxury and power which mirrors Disney’s portrayal of royalty with the British royal family broadcasting an extravagant and traditional royal wedding to the world. This perfect life that Disney have implanted in our heads since we were young reflected the ideas that we have for the British Royal family however, in the last month a shocking interview was released in American by Oprah Winfrey with Meghan and Harry after they have left all royal duties. In the interview Meghan discusses to reality of being a princess in the British Royal family and the entrapment she felt leaving her in a serious mental state. The couple also discussed the tradition problems that the institution has particularly about racism (Weaver, 2021). This is not the first time that an interview was broadcasted to shine a light on the problems within the British Royalty, the interview with Princess Diana was broadcasted in 1995 before she died in a car accident two years later (Nicholl, 2020). Although these interviews were only a snippet of what life for Meghan and Harry and Princess Diana within the palace this moves our ideologies further away from our first introduction of a princess (BBC, 1995).

The Crown is a Netflix Series ‘follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century’ (The Crown, 2021). Prince Harry was a guest on James Cordon’s Late Late show and revealed that ‘The Crown’ is fiction by loosely based on the truth therefore I believe this is a reasonably good source to understand the life of a member of the royal family, especially during the times of Princess Diana (Davis, 2021). Although Disney fairy tales are built off fantasy and make believe for children, many of the movies have reference to politics , class privilege, and sexual politics linking more to the British Royal Family than we initially realise (DO ROZARIO, 2019) 13
In 2019 Zendaya dressed as Cinderella in a light-up Tommy Hilfiger dress at the Met Gala. Her stylist, Law Roach, dressed as her fairy godmother and carried a wand to light up her dress. This was a creation a modern-day design of the Cinderella Dress however the ideologies of a Disney Princess was still present as a reimagination of childhood (Kosin, 2019). Figure 10: Cinderella Story Film 2004
A Cinderella Story is an American movie released in 2004 that takes a modern take on the traditional story of Cinderella. The narrative is based on a teenage girl whose father has died and therefore is now cared for by her evil stepmother who has two children. Although this film is based on the traditional fairy tale it is based in an American High School. I looked at the as part of my research as an interesting concept to consider for my end piece is a modern real life Disney Princess (A Cinderella Story (2004) - IMDb, 2004). Zac Posen is an American Fashion designer known for his striking dresses seen as big celebrity events. As part of my research, I wanted to look at a fashion designer that worked with large ballroom style dresses to fit the aesthetic of a Disney Princess. My thoughts are that I could use Zac Posen as a fashion designer for Disney Princess dresses and create a fashion show of all the modern Disney Princess dresses (Nast, 2021). After looking at Zac Posen I looked at the prodcution of the fashion show as a potencial final piece (Skov et al., 2009).
Fantasy within Fashion: Other designers have used the Princess/ fantasy as part as their fashion shows such as, Paolo Sebastian “Once Upon A Dream” SS18 Collection, Thom Browne Spring Summer 2020, Thom Browne Fall Winter 2020/2021, DOLCE & GABBANA Milano Autumn Winter 2014. They all use an alternate way in which they present their clothing on the catwalk which could be used for the project (Sebastian, 2018) (Browne, 2020) (Browne, 2021) (D&G, 2014). Fantasy within fashion shows are popular way in which to present ballgown dresses and link very closely to the Disney style setting. This shows that Disney’s influence towards fantasy is very predominant especillay is high fashion. Within High Fashion and Pop Fashion: The Symbolic Production of Fashion in Le Monde and The Guardian book, Bourdieu discusses that garments on the catwalk has a material production but also a symbolic production, meaning that the garment has a deeper meaning. Although Disney Princess dresses are a positive beauty statement it may have more realistic ideologies which may link to the realities of the British Royal Family (Rocamora, 2015).

Tim Walker After exploring the idea of Disney and Princes/ Princesses I wanted to find a photographer that explores a more fantasy visual to the images. Tim Walker creates images using extreme costume and fantasy style settings. I particularly like the use of costume and how it creates an interesting and obscure visual to communicate a story. His photography also links with the idea of Disney through his use photoshoot using the theme of Alice in Wonderland (Walker, 2021). Tilda Swinton W magazine 2013

David Sims released an editorial shoot in American Vogue 2013 called ‘Cinderella Story’. This was a modern-day reimagined shoot based on the traditional fairy tales including Cinderella, Belle and The Little Mermaid The style of these images is something that I find very interesting and will consider for my final piece (Sims, 2013).

Research Analysis: Before moving onto research for my final piece and creating a final outcome for a target audience I wanted to analyse what has been the main inspiration to carry into my final outcome. I chose the band jacket as my chosen garment to focus on which give me the initial ideas of royalty and wealth. The younger age catorgory would infer that the word royalty links with Disney and the fairytale royalty life contrasting to the more mature perspective of the word, The British Royal Family. This made me realiase that the fanatsy theme of royal life is drilled into a childs head from a young age and therefore the lifestyle of a Disney Princesses is linked to the life of the British Royal Family. Therefore, I thought it was intresting to compare the image of being a princess within Disney and a princess within The British Royal Family and what real life princesses say about the reality of being a princess through TV interviews. As part of the theme of ‘What Makes a Princess’ I looked at the film ‘A Cinerella Story’ to look at the way the reference to a Disney Princess, Cinerella, is potrayed in modern day (A Cinderella Story- IMDb, 2004). This gave me the idea to look at what a modern-day Disney Princess would look like. Therefore I started to look a Fashion designers that design princess style ballgown dresses. Tommy Hilfiger designed a dress for Zendaya to wear at the Met Gala that was a replicate of the Cinerella dress (Kosin, 2019). Zac Posen was another designer that I looked at that designs ballgown style dresses for famous celebrities to wear on the red carpet (Nast, 2021). Looking at these designers raised the idea of, does being a princess come with a beautiful ballgown? Without a princess dress are you distiguised as being a princess? The idea of the design of the dresses also gave me the idea of creating a fashion show based in a Royal Setting.

Princess Jasmine- Daria Artemieva
I then looked at photographers that have created fantasy themed fashion photography. I firstly looked at Tim Walker as he is known for his fantasty themed fashion photography, his photographers led to be become intrested within this area for my final piece as a possibility for the theme of ‘What makes a Princess’ (Walker, 2021). I then looked at David Sims’s editoial within Vogue, named Cinerella Story, where he took a modern take on the traditional fairytale and almost took a dark twist on the fairytale through his photography (Sims, 2013). This style of output give me the inspiration to potentially create a editorial. Finally, I looked at Daria Artemieva who is a illustator who illustates Disney Princesses in a way that puts them in a modern light. He uses the theme of their Princess dresses to create a modern and real-life approach to the traditional Disney Princesses (Artemieva, 2021). This solidified my ideas of how I would portray ‘What makes a Princess’ with reference to my initial ideas of The British Royal Family and Disney Princesses.

Final Outcome Idea 1: My first idea for a final piece that stems from my chosen garment is to plan a fashion show with a line of Disney princess dresses that are designed for celebrities to wear on the red carpet. These dresses will keep the origin of the traditional characters dress with a modern and more red-carpet appropriate style. This range will include the older and original Disney princesses such as Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty but will also include dresses from the more recent princesses for example Moana, Merida and Elsa. After my research I believe that the designer Zac Posen would be the best fit to create this Disney themed runway. The set of the catwalk would be in a castle upon a hill to give the impression of the Cinderella castle and would be decorated in Disney style wedding decorations. Each model used will be a look alike of the Disney princess in the film and will walk down the runway with slow tempo Disney music such as Beauty and the Beast, When you wish upon a star and I see the light.
Target Audience:
The target market for this runway would be between the Millennials and Gen Z. The catwalk will create nostalgia for the audience who were fans of Disney Princess’s as a child. Even though the first Disney Princess, Snow White, was created in 1937 Disney only started to become popular in in 1980’s and continues its success into today (Disney, 2021).
Castle Exterior

Final Outcome Idea 2: From my research another idea I have is to create an editorial photoshoot exploring the idea of what makes a princess. Throughout my research I have compared the portrayal of a Disney Princess with the British Royal family and the impact that Princess Diana’s and more recently Meghan and Harry’s interview has had on the ideologies of what makes a princess. Therefore, this editorial shoot will demonstrate how the life of a princess is a life of luxury, but a princess is still a human, the same as everyone else.
Belle
The Little Mermaid- Ariel
The images will show a selection of Disney princesses through a perspective of real life and not the fantasy that is portrayed through Disney. I will create four different images with four different Disney Princess’s in a modern-day setting. These images will have reference to the origin of their narrative through the use of costume and props. For example, the use of pink costuming and the setting as a bed for Sleeping Beauty.
Princess Jasmine
Sleeping Beauty
For my four photoshoots I am going to use four different princesses that have very different looks and from different cultures within the films. 1. Sleeping Beauty 2. Princess Jasmine 3. Ariel 4. Belle
These images by Daria Artemieva match the vision I have to portray the theme of ‘what makes a princess’ as I will create an editorial shoot that strips the fantasy out of a Disney Princess and taking away the pressures for real life royalty by photographing them in real life settings and clothing.
Chosen Outcome Idea:
23
Target Audince:
For my ‘What makes a Princess’ editorial the target audience will be an age range that has the most impact it can and therefore the use of nostalgia is important in creating a connection between the images and the audience. Although Disney was established in 1923 the hype and popularity began later on (Miller, 2019). As I want to link the idea of what it means to be a princess not just in terms of Disney but in terms of The British Royal Family, I think it is important that the target audience has lived through Disney becoming more modern as well as the modern British Royal Family. It is also important that the target audience of my editorial is keyed in with the modern issues such as gender roles and mental health. This will allow the message of ‘What does it mean to be a Princess’ to be translated in the way in which I want it to be portrayed in a modern light. Therefore, for this editorial the target audience should be a female aged between 18 and 35 as this allows the target audience to understand and support modern issues within society and therefore understand the key points of this editorial being ‘What makes a Princess’. This means that I would be aiming this editorial at Generation X and Millennials. Even though both these generations have emerged and are now more focused on online than print, the purchases of fashion magazines such as Vogue are more of a decorative feature and imagery focus than what these magazines were been used by previous generations. I would imagine Vogue magazines to be read for fashion news and rolled up in a pocket whereas now fashion trends and news can be found more easily on the internet therefore the younger generations are using this magazine not to gain information but for a spectacle of photography. In terms of market segmentation, the demographic would be female aged 18 to 35 who is either single, in a relationship or newly married. They are either a student or in a lower position job role but working their way up. In terms of social economic grading system, the target audience would be between C1 and E. For geographic segmentation the target audience would live in the city with a high population and goes to cocktail bars, shopping and go to protests about modern issues (psychographic segmentation). And finally for the behavioural segmentation, the target audience for a fashion magazine and therefore my editorial would be that they would purchase the magazine either monthly as a collectable or as a on off when the cover interests the reader (Acorn,2021).
Figure 18: Target Audince Moodboard
24
Vogue Target Audience:
The Importance of the Editorial:
This editorial will be shown in Vogue. This fashion publication will fit this editorial the best as Vogue focusses on uniqueness and powerful imagery which reflects my intensions of this editorial (magazine lin, 2021). When choosing a puplication for my editorial to be presented in it was important that the magazine had covered mature topics previously and therefore the audince wouldn’t just see this ‘What makes a Princess’ editorial as a direct link to Disney Princesses but would understand the hidden messages. Therefore due to the Vogue’s mature and modern issues raised within their magazines such as the Harry Styles editorial, Vogue was the most fitting puplication to use (Vogue,2021). The target market for this editorial in the Vogue publication is the millennials and the Gen Z as not only does it create nostalgia and creates a connection with the audience but the monthly reach of Vogue magazine in Great Britain from April 2019 to March 2020, by demographic group shows that women between the aged between 15 and 35 are highly engaged with the magazine (Watson, 2021). Due to the content of the editorial the millennials and the Gen Z will be the best fit to understand the deeper meaning and create more interaction. I have chosen to continue with the idea of the editorial as I believe the concept and narrative links into modern society. With Meghan and Harry’s interview being released recently this links with the idea of ‘What makes a Princess’ which could create a larger engagement for the editorial. Before creating my photography, I am going to plan out my location, costume and models through a mood board before experimenting with locations.
Although the idea for this editorial is based on Disney Fiction, the idea of ‘What makes a Princess’ is based on the British Royal Family and what it is like be a part of the famous and reputable family respected by people worldwide. The struggles that Princess Diana faced with led her to an early death and the recent media trolling that Meghan also faced has changed the way that people perceive the British Royal Family (Nicholl, 2020). Disney Princesses are portrayed as perfect women and living a clearly fictional life. However, the British Royal Family is very much a non-fiction real life family that are portrayed as perfection. Therefore, the editorial that I will create will be based on four Disney Princesses but stripping back the fantasy and portraying them as normal people in an editorial vogue style shoot. The importance of this editorial is to show how even when you strip away the fantasy of Disney their lives can still look pretty perfect but are very different behind closed doors just like Diana and Meghan discussed in their interviews (BBC, 1995) .
Vogue v Teen Vogue The style of photoshoot editorial I will create is more creative an abstract to usual fashion shoots therefore it will reflect the style of editorials in Vogue. I have then looked in the difference between Vogue and Teen Vogue. The obvious difference is the target age group with teen Vogue being aimed at a younger audience than Vogue. I also noticed throughout my research Teen Vogue use imagery that is more direct fashion trends and stereo-typical fashion photography imagery whereas Vogue use their platform to portray a more ab-stract and mature look aswell as mature topics. Therefore, the idea of ‘What makes a Princess’ with the base of the research being the recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan and Harry I believe that my editorial with fit the best within Vogue. I have created a mood board for each princess with my initial ideas for the different shoots. For Sleeping Beauty, I want to use the setting on a bedroom with the blonde model sat on a pink bed with pink pyjamas on with some pink props such as flowers, food, and bedroom items. The use of the bed and colour scheme is to keep reference to the origin of the character.
Figure 21: Sleeping Beauty mood board 26
Figure 22: Princess Jasmine mood board
For Princess Jasmine I am using a model with a similar look and she will be wearing an outfit with the theme of blue and gold jewellery to reflect the original costuming of the princess. The setting will be in a park on a night with the stars out sat on a middle eastern looking blanket that will refer to the magic carpet in the film.
27
Figure 23: Ariel- the little mermaid mood board
For Ariel I have chosen a model with red hair to reflect the orginal cartoon character in the Disney film she will be wearing a purple crop top and green bottoms to mirror the costuming of The Little Mermaid. The setting will be on the beach with the background showing the sea and cliffs.
28
Figure 24: Belle mood board
For my Beauty and The Beast photoshoot I am going to use a dark hair modelled and she will wear an all yellow outfit to reflect Belle’s dress. Within the film there are strong references to books and roses so I will use these as props in a image in a setting of a garden.
29
Photoshoot Plan: Ariel- The Little Mermaid
Beach Location
Through my planning I wanted to use beach as my setting, so I searched online a few beaches within my area. I thought that Thornwick Bay would be ideal for the shoot as it is a small beach that has rocks, cliffs, some sand and the sea. I had created a Pinterest mood board with pose ideas and ways in which I can incorporate the rocks, sea and cliffs within the image. I wanted to use a day that would allow the waves to be large and powerful to create a more dramatic background to the image. The beach scene links to the narrative of The Little Mermaid as within the fairy tale the Princess is a mermaid who lives under the sea and has the setting of the beach. For the outfit I asked my model if she had any corset style purple tops as I wanted to reference the purple bikini that the cartoon Ariel wears. I wanted to also use green jeans that Zara are currently selling to mirror the mermaid tail. I will also use a model with red hair to match Ariel.
Ariel Outfit
Aurora- Sleeping Beauty For my Sleeping Beauty Shoot I want to use a bedroom setting to link to the narrative of the fairy tale. I also want to use the theme colour of pink to reference the main colour of the Disney Princess. Therefore, I want my model to wear pink pyjamas with pink themed pillows, blankets and other bedroom props with lights. I am also using a model with blonde hair to reference to look of Sleeping Beauty, I have also asked my model to curl her hair as it also creates more similarities between the model and the Princess. I will also use a eye mask as part of the image as it adds to theme of bed and sleep. The use of pyjamas not also references Sleeping Beauty but also creates a representation of the theme of ‘What makes a Princess’ as it takes away the fantasy and puts the princess in a ‘normal ‘bedroom in ‘normal’ pyjamas. Park Location
Belle- Beauty and The Beast

As part of the planning for my Princess Jasmine photoshoot I wanted to create a scene that shows a starry night on an open area. I then wanted to use a rug to be a reference to the magic carpet to create a scene the replicates the scene in the film but taking away the sense of fantasy and creating a more picnic type of image. Firstly, I was going to take my pictures on a clear night with the stars but after previous experience of photography in the dark the image quality didn’t match the style of photography for my other images. Therefore, through the Kipling Method I decided to edit the sky to make it a dark sky using an app (Project Management Institute, 2000). It took a while to find a location with open space that you can see a lot of the sky. I did some test shots at different parks around Manchester, but the sky was obstructed by tress and buildings which wouldn’t work with the editing. The outfit I want my model to wear is all blue theme to match the theme of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin. Therefore, I chose a blue top with blue jeans to be different to the rest of the princesses. I also want to use of lot of gold jewellery as that is an important element for the character. For my Beauty and The Beast photoshoot I want to use a park with a rose bush in the background as the narrative of Beauty and the Beast is about how Belle wants a rose off her father for her birthday. I took a trip to a few different parks in the area to find a rose bush but none of them had them so through the Kipling method I decided to use one of the nicest parks and purchase some roses that I could put in a bush to create my own illusion of a rose bush (Project Management Institute, 2000). I then wanted to use a white sheet to highlight the model sitting on it to the greenery around. Belle is also known for reading books, so I thought it was important to use a book within the image. For the outfit, once again I wanted to use the theme colour of the princess and therefore it is yellow. I didn’t have anything yellow for my model to wear so I bought a yellow denim dress which I thought fit the park theme and also the idea of the theme ‘What makes a princess’ being a modern day casual outfit.

Analysis: After taking these pictures at the beach I have selected my favourite eight images that I have edited to make the colours of her outfit seem stronger and changed the colouring of the image. I will then pick one to represent the character Ariel, the little mermaid for the Vogue editorial shoot. These eight images that I have picked use a low angle which I think makes the model have more power and allows more of the setting to be seen. The green jeans make the model be the main focus of the image due to the dull sky and rocks. Therefore, the decision to use a dull day at the beach was beneficial. I told my model how to stand and pose as I wanted the images to look high fashion and infer a strong woman. This then references the idea of what the reality of being a princess makes you. Some of the images that are rejections have too much background which makes the attention be lessened for Ariel and therefore I want to use an image that is more focused on the Princess than the background. Therefore, I think that image number 5, 7 and 8 are the best images for the Vogue editorial. I have edited the images but kept the element of natural lighting

Analysis: These are eight of the images that I have selected from the Sleeping Beauty photoshoot that are the most likely to be used for my final editorial shoot. I wanted to create an image that has reference to the character through the setting and colour schemes. I have edited these images differently to compare them and decide which fits best with the other princess images. I told my model to do a variety of poses which some may be a bit obscure also I think compared to the Ariel shoot the less obscure poses have worked better. The poses convey a sense of femineity and human normality compared to the fantasy life of Disney and the fake and hidden life of a British Royal I also think the lighter editing on the images works better especially compared to the Ariel shoot. I tried taking these images with the blind open, but it made the images a lower quality and therefore shutting the blind made the image have a better setting. The images that I will reject from this editorial shoot are the images that don’t have a centre focus. For example, image 5,6 and 8 are images that I won’t use as there is a lack of power comapred to the other images which have more central imagery.

Analysis: Once again I have picked eight images from my Princess Jasmine photoshoot which I believe fits the theme of Aladdin and ‘What makes a Princess’. The images show a strong female through the poses and body language in which Princess Jasmine is but also gives a modern representation from the outfit and the setting of a park. The image also takes away the fantasy of the Princess which fits my theme of ‘What makes a Princess’ painting her as a ‘normal girl’ named a Princess. I have also used an Asian/ Middle Eastern themed carpet to mirror the idea of the magic carpet therefore I have edited the sky to be a starry night to reference the idea of the magic carpet ride in the Aladdin films. I also asked my model to do a pose that matched the theme of a Vogue editorial therefore the hand poses were my favourite images, for example images 1, 2,6,7 and 8. I have edited the sky to give the impression of the scene in the film on the magic carpet and have kept the sense of natural light.

Analysis: From the Beauty and The Beast photoshoot I have picked eight of the images that I think portrays Belle’s character in a modern light to suggest the underlying theme of ‘What makes a Princess.’ I had my model sit on a white sheet to create a sense of highlight to her compared to the background. I also added a book to the image as this is another prop that Belle uses predominately within the fairy-tale. As the images will eventually turned into a editorial for Vogue magazine it was important I made the images fit the theme of editorial through poses in which I think I achieved within most of these images. The first four images with the rose bush location are my favourite as they create a more distinctive imagery of Belle compared to image 7 and 8 in which the flowers don’t connote Beauty and The Beast. I have edited these images in a way that have made the images slightly brighter and more vibrant but I wanted to keep the images very natural to allow the fantasy of the perfect life of a princess to be lost.

Behind the Scenes:

Belle Photoshoot Due to Covid restrctions I couldn’t get any behind the scenes pictures of my Sleeping Beauty shoot. However these are some images captured of the photoshoots from the three different model’s shoots. I used a lot of low angels as it created a more powerful female image especially at the beach as it created the illusuin she was all the way up the cliff when I took them from the floor. These images also show the different locations I used for the shoots to allow the image to reach the best standard. 38

Vogue Layout Anaysis:
The Exhibitionist Editorial- Vogue 2021
Vogue editorials 2021

Following my photoshoots, I am wanting to create an editorial for Vogue magazine and wanting to look at some layouts for landscape images. I went into a few shops and looked through their Vogue Magazines and took note of their layouts for editorials. This editorial that I have looked at named ‘The Exhibitionist’ uses their photoshoot on a layout of a few different pages. The layout of this editorial uses blank space to emphasis the images, when looking through other editorials Vogue is known for using a lot a blank white space or covering the whole page with the image. I like this editorial as it uses different amount and sizes of images on each page, some that are covering a double page and others that use multiple images on one page. I also like the use of written text. I am not wanting to write an article to do with the editorial as I believe my images should tell their own story. Although I like the way this editorial uses small amounts of text so that I can give context to reference to the image I have created.

I have looked at a few different editions of Vogue online and physical copies and looked at the layouts that they use. I have noticed that the editorials follow a clean and sophisticated look using either the photograph as the whole page or using the white page for most of the covering of the page. I have also looked at the number of pages that Vogue use for an editorial within their magazine, and they use around 10-12 usually with the expectation of one editorial I have seen that has 18. For my editorial I will create a portion of these pages. I have also looked at the conventions of a front cover of Vogue to replicate this for my magazine cover. Figure 26: Vogue Page Layouts, 2021

Critical Reflective Summary: From my chosen garment being the band jacket, my final piece is an editorial for Vogue named ‘What makes a Princess’. I started off researching The British Royal Family in comparison with the perception of Disney Royalty. It was clear that Disney portrayed their Princesses as the ‘perfect’ female with the most stunning beauty and who live happily ever after in a life of luxury. This ideology of a Disney princess was implanted in children’s brains as the normality meaning the word princess has connotations of perfectness and beauty. My research into the interview with Princess Diana, and Meghan Markle was a turning point as the connotations of a Princess created by Disney was flipped to a life of entrapment and old fashioned tradition. This made me become more interested in how fiction influences the perception of real life. I then started looking at different ways in which princesses are portrayed through the film ‘A Cinderella Story’ as well as different fashion shows. A Cinderella Story is based on the traditional narrative of Cinderella but with a modern twist, with additions of teenage high school drama. This led me to become interested in modern ways in which princesses are portrayed therefore I looked at a few different designers that make princess style ballgown dresses such as the Cinderella dress that Tommy Hilfiger designed for Zendaya to wear at the Met Gala but also dresses by Zac Posen. By looking at real life fashion designers it created a link between Disney Princesses and the fashion industry and led to have the idea of linking 40
Disney Princesses with a high fashion context for my final piece. As a further development I looked at Tim Walker as he is a photographer that focuses on fantasy. This inspired me to look more deeply at fashion photography for my final piece. The idea of an editorial took my interest after discovering the American Vogue editorial, ‘Cinderella Story’ by David Sims. The illustrator Daria Artemieva led me to the idea of creating an editorial for Vogue that is based on stripping the fantasy out of Disney Princesses. My alternate idea for my end product is to create a fashion show that is based on the traditional Disney Princesses within a fantasy setting of a castle. Although I had more interest in the back story of the Vouge editorial. Therefore, I chose four Disney Princesses that I wanted to base my photoshoots off and created a mood board for each princess and planned for my shoots. Firstly, I took my Ariel model to the beach and did the photoshoot there, I was very happy with the outcome of these images and looked exactly how I wanted them to. I then used my Sleeping Beauty model in a bedroom setting at university. These photographs are my least favourite as the lighting in the university bedroom was dull and hard to make look like the setting of Sleeping Beauty that I wanted. Due to lockdown, I couldn’t use another bedroom other than university halls that we are staying in, however without the restrictions we could have used my room at home which would have had better lighting and more fitting scenery. For my Belle character I had chosen my model but
at the last minute she pulled out and therefore I had to quickly find another model. Luckily, I found a girl who was perfect for the characterisation. After improvising and creating my own rose bush these photographs turned out exactly how I wanted them, and I was very pleased with them. Finally for my Princess Jasmine photoshoot I wanted to use a night stary sky to replicate the magic carpet scene in the movie however the lighting was not good in the dark and therefore I decided to edit the sky afterwards. As I was editing the sky, I needed to find a location that had a clear sky without obstructions from trees and buildings as the editing wouldn’t work. Overall, after the editing these images weren’t my favourite as the editing wasn’t the best and if I would to do it again, I would have paid for a better software to edit on. When all the images are collated, they look the way I wanted them to and portray the ideas behind the photographs. When laying out my images as a Vogue editorial I realised I took all my images in landscape which limited the design layout, therefore if I was to do this again, I would take a mixture of portrait and landscape images. When looking at other Vogue editorials most of them are between 10 and 12 pages although I don’t have enough images to do this and therefore if I was to do this again, I would take a variety of images for each princess to be able to create a longer editorial. Overall, I am very happy with my final editorial for Vogue as it links with my personal beliefs and interests and explores a narrative behind the images.
