EMILY THOMAS Folio 2019 - Masters of Architecture Student University of Melbourne
NEUROGENERATION Masters Thesis (Currently completing) Using regenerative principles to support autism sensitive design in apartments
Between 2015 and 2018, the number of people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) increased by 25.1% (ABS, 2018). This has prompted more research surrounding ASD sensitive design models. However, this research has often neglected to consider sustainability, resulting in building stock with greater accessibility, but poses a threat to the environment (Null, 2014). This thesis will use elements of sustainable design (more specifically regeneration), to support the creation of a new, ASD specific, built environment model. Bringing forth the question: how can the built environment guidelines and standards be improved to promote better amenity for all?

CRADLE TO CRADLE Environmental Building Studio - 2019 (Second Year, Masters of Architecture) Reducing the overall life cycle energy usage of a building by renovating and reusing existing structures Cradle to Cradle is a concept developed by William Mcdonough and Michael Braungart which integrates design and science in a new model of circular economy. Their framework encourages a completely circular life cycle, wherein all materials and resources are utilised for as long as possible, and in theory, never disposed of.
CHILDREN’S LIBRARY Bits and Bots - 2018 (First Year, Masters of Architecture) Using robotic drawings to inspire architectural form Our library about the journey, not the destination. Our architecture is designed create a space which facilitates movement into certain spaces, yet within these spaces, the journey is ambiguous and left up the users; the children. The kids’ library focuses on four steps; the entrance, donating or returning, following and finding.

HOFPLEINSTRAAT Opportunistic Urbanism - 2018 (First Year, Masters of Architecture) Planning to overcome the urban heat island effect The urban heat island effect is a world wide phenomenon that can cause cities to be up to 12 degrees hotter than the surrounding rural environments. Using my project Hofpleinstraat, I aimed to overcome extreme heat events in Zoho, by utilising both the public and the private sector along a heritage listed viaduct.

MODEL MAKING Various subjects and various years at Melbourne University Model making is one of my favourite parts of architecture as I love bringing my designs to life in the real world. For me, model making is about exploration and communication and brings another dimension to my ideas.
