Cubism Cubism is an art movement that originated in 1907. Different cultures influence cubism partially African facemasks. Some of the main characteristics of cubism are sharp shapes and edges, blocks of colour with multiple angles, also unrealistic features. Some of the most recognized artists are Pablo Picasso, Juan “Gris, No movement in the early part of Metzinger and George Braque, Jean the twentieth century was to give Fernand Léger. rise to such profound changes as Cubism. In its initial overview, the decision to limit ourselves to Picasso or Braque is symbolic: Cubism was not so much a movement as a meeting of these two minds. Their collaboration has been furthered by poets and critic Gullaume Apollinaire, and, like a climbing team roped together, they would interact daily to the point that, for the inexperienced eye, their works can be difficult to tell apart.” (Bernard Blistene,2001 , pg 23)
These designs are influenced by cubism. They have sharp lines and edges with colour blocking. The hat in this outfit also symbolizes cubism because it has a sharp block shape, with vivid colour.
Pablo Picasso
This piece of art is by Pablo Picasso. I think it has unrealistic facial features, sharp lines and edges, block colours and fragmented pieces. I think this is an interesting piece of art as the oranges and yellows are eye catching. I also think the facial features are eyecatching as it almost looks like many pieces of a broken mirror or jigsaw. In my opinion this is one of Picasso’s most interesting pieces as there is a lot of emotion in this image and it could tell many stories. I think when you look at this image closely it almost makes you feel sad and makes you want to gain an understanding to the story behind this image.
These images symbolize Cubism but I think in a More discreet way and Mainly focusing on the Make up and head wear. The make up is bold and Eye catching because Of the colour used, which Also compliments the Lipstick worn by the model. The head wear is bold and unusual but goes well with The square shape make up
Cubism The Cubists were the first artists that introduced collage into painting, I think this is very interesting as it was a completely new form of art as Collage in a mixed media format had never really been used before in Popular art. Personally I really like the collage style of cubism. I think it More interesting as it uses mixed media and there are more textures to Look at and observe.
This painting is by Jean Metzinger it is a painting of the scenery of Cliffs at Longues-surMer .While doing my research this image caught my eye for several reasons, firstly the vivid colours in the painting are eye catching and look very beautiful all together, they are warm colours that compliment each other well. I think this painting gives a sense of freedom and relaxation. I think what's interesting about this painting is the Metzinger has not tried to simply copy nature but re create it in his own individual While researching Metzinger’s work I way using a more subtle form of cubism Found a blog that had published an Article about this painting the review Had similar views to my own on this Particular piece. http://jean-metzinger.blogspot.co.uk/
This cubist collage Bottle of Vieux Marc, Glass, Guitar and Newspaper is by Pablo Picasso in 1913. The media used is collage, pen and ink on blue paper.
Feminism Feminism is a movement aimed at defining and campaigning for equal political, economic, and social rights for women. Feminist art, grew out of the feminist art movement of the 1970s, is made using traditional art forms, like paintings, and nontraditional media, for example performance art. Some of the most inspirational feminist artists include Miriam Schapiro, Tracey Emin, Frida Kahlo and Judy Chicago. Feminists often campaign for equal pay for women, gender equality and general equality for women. More modern day celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Beyoncé are currently campaigning for the word “bossy” to be banned as this word implies that when a women is in charge she is just “bossy” where as if a man where in charge he would be known as a leader.
Judy Chicago, the Dinner Party In 1979 Judy Chicago finished a piece of art work symbolizing feminism. She created a dinner Party that consisted of 39 place settings for inspirational women from the past to celebrate their achievements. Each place setting features a unique butterfly/flower-like sculpture rising from the plates, meant to symbolize a vulva.
I think this is a unique way of presenting artwork and getting a message across. Chicago used none traditional media to present her artwork, I think this is successful as it is eye catching and interesting to look at because there is clearly a story behind it.
Feminism Feminism in FashionFeminism is often linked to fashion. Some feminists feel like fashion is an important way of expressing and communicating their views. In the fashion industry I think there is stereo type that women who campaign for women’s rights are not fashionable but this is not the case: “The most famous feminists were fashionable and the fashionable, a feminist. CoCo Chanel who wanted to eliminate Yves Saint Laurent’s’ version on how a woman’s body should be clothed and shown, invented what we know to be “trousers” for women. A figure hugging hourglass shape wasn’t and isn’t the only look for women, as we range in style as often as hard-core feminists rant on twitter about London Fashion Week every year.” – Xxymagazine, Fashion and Feminism. Fashion collections have used fashion to promote feminism, for example Prada launched a collection for S/S 14 that promoted feminism. For the collection Prada used prints similar to famous feminist Frida Kahlo’s work they also displayed the work of Kahlo’s husband Diego Rivera’s on the background of the runway. In the fashion industry today there are over 816,000 jobs, despite this most of the highest earning jobs in the fashion industry are occupied by males, a lot of top women’s wear designers are men for example, Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani, Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad. A lot of women also feel that the fashion industry and cat walks of these designers promote an unrealistic view of women. Although this is true there is nothing wrong with many of the clothes produced by these
Surrealism Surrealism is an art movement that was founded in 1924 in Paris by Andre Breton. Surrealism is an artistic movement that expresses the artist views in an alternative way that is not realistic. It is not supposed to look realistic it is dedicated to imagination and dreams that are creative. The characteristics of surrealism are unrealistic and not true to real life, artists push boundaries to accomplish different and strange artwork. Artists should make their work reflect their feelings or dreams; they can express anger, fear, sadness, sexuality or many other feelings. Surrealism artwork should be crazy, strange, creative, ambitious and dramatic. Some of the most recognized surrealist artists are Salvador Dali, Max Ernest, Rene Magritte and Andre Breton.
This piece of artwork is by Salvador Dali. It is a very expressive piece of artwork that makes you look and think about the meaning behind it. When I first looked at this painting I thought the meaning behind it was life being created as the man is hatching from the egg. When I researched into this image I found out: “In this painting Salvador Dali gives us a large egg-shaped globe of the world out of which a man is struggling to "hatch". This "new man" is coming out of North America the United States. There is blood running out of the crack in the egg and the new man's hand has England firmly in its grasp. In the foreground two figures are watching; one an adult the other a small child. The adult, of indeterminate sex, is drawing the child's attention by pointing at the new man being birthed. The child is standing as if afraid both hiding behind and holding on to the adult's knees. The imagery here is fairly clear. America is emerging as the major force in the world. This new power is at the cost of some blood (World War II). The fate of England is in America's hands.” – (http://salvadordalipaintings.blogspot.co.uk/)
I think this is a very interesting painting as small details become more obvious the longer you look at it, for example the map. I like this painting the best because it isn’t meaningless it has a message that Dali is trying to
Surrealism Surrealism has influenced many modern day fashion designs, catwalks and editorials. This editorial is by Andrew Matisuk. I think using surrealism in an editorial is very effective as it is often more eye catching than a normal or less creative editorial. This image in particular makes the reader look closer at the clothes and the whole image, so it is good for promotion, it will defiantly make readers remember the spread.
These designs by Agatha Ruiz De La Prada are in the style of surrealism. I think these garments are effective as they are not the type of garment you would normally see on the catwalk. My favorite garment is the umbrella as the way it is placed looks like it is crying, so there almost looks like there is a story behind it. I think the designs are fun and they defiantly stand out. I also think the bird cage skirt is good because not only have they paid attention to the skirt they have also paid attention to detail as the hat is in the style of a birds nest with eggs in it to compliment the bird “Still alive kicking some thirty years after the death of cageand skirt Its instigator, Andre Breton, Surrealism continues to stand for a “bid for freedom” appealing to all those who have wanted, through the Use of “imaginary solutions” to resist the rationalism of the twentieth Century.” – (Bernard Blistene, 2001, pg67)
Lady Gaga is a modern day celebrity that often uses surrealism in her costumes. They are often extravagant, eye catching and sometimes crazy. I think using surrealism really helps Lady Gaga’s brand and career as I think the press takes more notice of her if she is in an eye-catching outfit. I think Lady Gaga uses surrealism in a very clever way.
Pop Art Pop Art first started in 1950’s, some of the most popular pop artists are Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton, Andy Warhol and Romero Britto. Some of the main characteristics of Pop art are bright, eye catching colours, flat images that are often influenced by comic books or newspapers. Imagery is often taken from popular media and products, as well as celebrities.
“Pop Art is popular, transient, expandable, low-cost, mass produced, young, witty, sexy, glamorous and big business.” – Hamilton,Bernard Blistene, 2001, pg131
Roy Lichtenstein is one of the most recognised pop artists. This image by Lichtenstein is a classic example of pop art, it is distinctive and easy to recognise. The ben-day dots used in this image are often used in pop art and are a classic characteristic of pop art. Pop art also doesn’t show the application of paint, so the colours are normally more in block. Personally I think pop art is very interesting to look at, I think the way the images are created is very skilful.
Pop Art Rodnick Band pop art collection has very obvious pop art influences, for example the Campbell’s tomato soup tin on one of the dresses is a famous image by Andy Warhol. All the dresses are drawn in pop art style and have taken inspiration from famous pop art. The designs are eye catching and noticeable. Also the make-up used on the models is pop art inspired, for example the block red lip.
This image is one of my favourite pop art inspired images. I love how cleverly applied the make-up is. I think the benday dots on the face of the model and in the background are really effective and eye catching, I also really like the tear effective, it completely changes the emotion of the picture, I like how make up can make the image look almost computer animated. The block colours used in this image are true to the style of pop art, even the eye shadow is in block colour. Also adding the speech bubble is true to the style of pop art. Pop art has been and still is inspiring fashion “Modern pop art-inspired looks, which showcases celebrities, icons and other objects in bold and fluorescent colours, continues to be popular and influential especially amongst a more modern and youthful crowd.”
Op Art Op Art is an art form that started back in the 1960’s. Op art is a art movement that gives an optical illusion, often the images look like they are moving. During the 60’s Op art influenced fashion and printing. Bridget Riley was a famous Op artist first becoming recognised during the mid 60’s . Her patterns became very popular and influenced fashion prints and designs. “I couldn’t get near what I wanted through seeing, recognizing and recreating, so I stood the problem on its head. I started studying squares, rectangles, triangles and the sensations they give rise to… It is untrue that my work depends on any literary impulse or has any illustrative intention. The marks on the canvas are sole and essential agents in a series of relationships which form the structure of the painting.” (Bridget Riley) “No painter, dead or alive, has ever made us more aware of our eyes than Bridget Riley.” Robert Melville, 1971
Idea Inspiration Feminis m
For one of my idea’s I have been inspired by the Mac Strength campaign. I like the way they portray women for this campaign, with a strong, dominating attitude. “Flex your femininity with a colour collection that's fearless, elegant and strong. Strike a powerful pose, stand out, redefine the notion of beauty - and do it with strength too irresistible to ignore.” – Mac Strength collection.
Idea Inspiration Feminism
Bully word: Manly. Power word: Athletic
I have taken inspiration from an episode of America’s next top model, I am going to use the Beyoncé “bossy” campaign as inspiration and convey a positive feminine message.
Bossy: Bully word Strong: Power Word

Evaluation For my final piece I have been inspired by many different ideas. Firstly while researching I became inspired by the Mac Strength campaign because it represents strong women who still wear make up and look feminine. I also really liked how cleverly the make up was used to contour abs and muscles onto the model to create a completely different look. Another campaign that inspired me was a shoot that America’s next top model created in season 15. During the shoot they had a “bully” word written onto their body along with a comparison “power” word. I used this as a inspiration for my chosen art movement feminism and used the Beyoncé Bossy campaign and applied it to a shoot in the same context.
For my final piece I noted down many different word combinations that relate to feminism. I then did my photo shoot in a basement with a simple black leotard, I did a light Smokey eye, with a light pink lip and contour. I didn’t want the make-up to be too heavy as I was more concentrated on getting full body shots to symbolise feminism rather than head shots. Before the photo shoot I visited the location once. The location was very basic, it was a basement that was unused. I rented it for a cheap price for 12 hours. Although the location was very basic and the lighting was not very good I feel like it ended up contributing well to the final photos. The overall look was grungy so it fitted in well with the theme.
To edit my photos I only used photo shop to add words as graffiti onto the walls. I didn’t feel the need to edit my photos a lot as I really liked the lighting in the original photos and I didn’t want them to look over edited. My final images represent feminism because of the words used, I linked the ban bossy campaign to the words I selected to add to my photos. For each photo there is a word that is stereotypically used as a degrading term to describe strong women, there is also a word that has the same meaning but is used in a way to empower women.
Overall I am really happy with my images. I was really pleased with the original lighting of the images and I think the words I edited onto the images really conveyed my message well. If I had the chance to re do the photo shoot, I would keep the location and the outfit. I would probably experiment more with poses and positions if I had more time. But overall I am really happy with the final images.
Tate Liverpool Marina Abramović-Rhythm 0 1974
In my opinion this piece of art work allows people, especially men to think that there are no boundaries and they can get away with whatever they like. Although she may have an artist message behind it not everyone in society sees this as art, and worryingly some people may take this video literally. This piece of acts as a euphemism to imply that women are weak and feeble, and are at the mercy of men's actions as well as suggesting that its mandatory that they comply with the wimps of any man. This epically shown in her act of allowing random men to unbutton her blouse.
During our trip to the Tate Art gallery in Liverpool we saw many interesting pieces of art work, personally I think one of the most eye catching pieces of art ‘Rhythm 0’ comes from Serbian-born artist Marina Abramovic.
In A certain section of the video we see Abramovic being forced to hold a loaded gun against her own head, personally I believe the gun encourages violence and gun crime. An issue that I personally feel should not be addressed in such a casual and irresponsible manner.
Rhythm 0 is a 6 hour long performance by Abramovic, she allows the public to manipulate her in anyway they choose using a range of different objects from everyday objects such as a comb and picture frame to more extreme items such as a loaded gun.
The meaning Abramovic was trying to get across could possibly be, If you don’t create boundaries for how others treat you, people take advantage of you. This stresses the importance of being confident in creating your own boundaries and only allowing what you feel comfortable with. In a way despite the contradicting appearance it ultimately encourages the empowerment of women. This view is echoed by numerous other critics and reviews. Although I support the empowerment of women, I believe this message could have been portrayed in a more responsible and subtle manner so as not to miss lead people in to thinking that it is acceptable to behave in the manner that was portrayed In the performance.
TATE LIVERPOOL FRUIT DISH,BOTTLE AND VIOLINPABLO PICASSO- 1914. While researching into the cubism art movement I discovered Pablo Picasso’s painting called the Weeping Woman. This image initially caught my eye because the colours were bright, vibrant and eye catching. I was also intrigued by the dismal expression portrayed on the woman's face.
There different opinions about this Piece of art work, for example some people share The view that this piece reflects the Spanish Civil War and the grieve it inflicted on the Country. Picasso didn’t portray the effects of the Spanish Civil war directly, instead he addressed the By showing the effect that it had on the people who Lived through it and were effected by it. Another common opinion is that Picasso is painting Dora Marr, a woman who Picasso was very close to For a number of years. After Marr’s father passed Away Picasso wanted to show the emotion Marr Was feeling but he didn’t want to show Marr directly So he created this piece to convey the emotion. Many of the fragments in the painting are sharp And distorted which could suggest how painfully The emotion is. Some say the expression “fall into Pieces” comes from this painting by Picasso.
The Son of Man, Rene Magritte The Son Of Man is a surrealist painting by Rene Magritte. The painting consists of a man standing in a long coat, in a bowler hat with an apple covering his face. Behind the man we can see a short wall with cloudy sea and sky in the background. Behind the apple we can just about see a small part of the mans eyes, the mans elbow is also bending backwards slightly. Some people find this painting very clever and intriguing, The message behind it is very interesting, some find the painting so Intriguing because it makes you think about the meaning rather than The meaning being so obvious. Personally I think this is the beauty of Surrealism, it is unlike any other form of art and is very cleverly presented. The Son Of Man is a self portrait. The painting conveys the Message that “everything we see hides another thing. We always Want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest In that which is hidden and which is visible does not show us. This Interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, One might sat, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.
