AN EXCLUSIVE EVENING FOR ART PATRONS, COLLECTORS + NEW FRIENDS IN SUPPORT OF EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY OF ART + DESIGN
ARTIST EMILY CARR WAS A CANADIAN ICON 85 YEARS AGO
2
Today Emily Carr University of Art + Design is an internationally recognized school with an environment for nurturing and developing creativity. Carey and I became involved with Emily Carr upon our first meeting with Ron Burnett, ten or so years ago. That involvement has given us the opportunity to understand what an outstanding institution does: create an environment for the interpretation of individual perspectives, and cultivate dreams. The university is committed to providing its students with the tools necessary to accomplish such dreams, including an ambitious new state-of-the-art, sustainable campus at Great Northern Way. Our respect for Ron and the Emily Carr faculty, staff and students is why Carey and I are welcoming you to this 85th anniversary celebration in the Wing Sang Museum. The works in this auction were carefully selected and generously donated by the artists and galleries, and we ask you to acquire with equal generosity. These works present a special collaborative opportunity between the collecting community and established artists to support the next generation of artists. We are also very privileged that Rodney Graham has graciously created a wonderful commemorative edition for the Emily Carr University of Art + Design supporters in attendance at the October 21 gala. I hope you enjoy this very special evening celebrating artistic dreams, the collecting spirit and the continuing success of Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

EXHIBIT E MARKS THE HIGHPOINT OF THE 85 YEAR HISTORY OF EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY OF ART + DESIGN
4
Visionaries started this great institution in 1925 and from that moment onwards it has been at the source of BC’s creative innovation and artistic output. This small institution is now spreading its wings thanks to the support of Bob Rennie and Carey Fouks and thanks to you, our wonderful benefactors. Bob Rennie and Carey Fouks have distinguished themselves as leading collectors and supporters of the arts in Canada. They have been doing this for many years and without them many extraordinary artists would not have had the support they needed to transform their careers. The artists represented in Exhibit E are a spectacular group and we are extremely grateful for their donations to the auction. Exhibit E and the support that Bob and Carey have shown and continue to show for Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a testament not only to their vision, but also to their desire to make the education of artists as important as what creative people produce. Culture is at the heart of a great city. Galleries, museums, theatres and universities provide the intellectual and emotional nourishment that we need to be informed and productive citizens. Exhibit E represents the best of what we do and are, the best of what our visions for the future could become and most importantly will allow a new generation of artists to create the works that will define the next generation. I want to thank everyone for coming and especially thank the contributing artists and Bob and Carey for everything that they are doing for the arts in BC and elsewhere.
Ron Burnett President + Vice-Chancellor, Emily Carr University of Art + Design
