residency program

application requirements The Master of Applied Arts is primarily designed for individuals working in the Visual Arts, Media and New Media fields as well as recent graduates of universities and schools that have art and media undergraduate programs. All applicants must hold a recognized four-year BFA, BDes or BMA (or directly related degree) with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher from an accredited University or Institute.

Candidates are evaluated by the following criteria:

Portfolio of work

Official transcripts of post-secondary education

Professional letters of recommendation (3)

Statement of intent

Curriculum vitae or résumé outlining related exhibitions, publications and/or professional experience.

CONNECTION TO RESEARCH + INDUSTRY

Students benefit from Emily Carr’s focused Research and Industry Office and the Intersections Digital Studios, which are hubs for strategic research innovation that build industry alliances and offer customized internship opportunities, including Mitacs and other funded opportunities. Centres of research include: health design, stereoscopic 3D, social and interactive media, public art and social practice, and a range of Visual Arts practices.

RESEARCH + TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES

Research Assistantships are designed to provide graduate students with valuable experience in research and other activities that support their studies and further their individual professional objectives. Many graduate students are employed as Research Assistants and work for a Faculty member or as part of a team on a larger research initiative. Teaching opportunities may also be available within the University for graduate students.

a climate for creativity Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s Master of Applied Art (MAA), a 22-month residency program located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, provides a climate for creativity that prepares students in Visual Art and Media Arts to become professional creators who take risks, think unconventionally, foster change and contribute to the global cultural economy.

about the program INTERDISCIPLINARY

The MAA program adopts an interdisciplinary framework to support emergent forms of cultural production. Courses in studio practice, research, and critical theory integrate methodologies that span diverse art forms and learning models. The program gives students the flexibility to explore, challenge and expand their creative knowledge in rigorous exchange with core faculty who are leading artists and scholars in their fields.

Students can choose from one of the following two streams:

INTERSECTIONS DIGITAL STUDIOS (IDS): A state-of-the-art research facility that bridges digital and material practices.

Prototyping + Media + Programming Studio Includes a CNC machine, 3D printers and scanners, HD video cameras, Apple Xserve Motion Capture + Visualization Studio A large black box space that supports motion capture or tracking and stereoscopic projection Wearables + Interactive Products Studio Includes electronic workbenches and needle embroidery machines for research with electronics/textiles/sensors
