WHO WE ARE Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a global leader in studio-based art, media and design and a community of creative, dedicated people who are passionate about the arts in all its many forms. FOUNDATION YEAR – Faculty of Culture + Community In your first year at Emily Carr, you will begin to explore creative ways to solve problems and engage with the world. You will connect with other students across a range of disciplines and be exposed to different approaches in considering how and why we make things. Expert faculty will introduce you to the basic principles of creative inquiry, exploring the interplay between theory and practice. Your courses focus on developing fundamental skills and a visual and conceptual vocabulary that will prepare you for your studies in whatever discipline you choose. Design has evolved into a human – centered practice focusing on the social, technological and experiential needs of contemporary society. Our design majors encourage you to be ‘Citizen Designers’, mindful of the power and consequences of design across a range of fields including; Communication Design, Industrial Design and Interaction Design. Focused on collaboration, you will benefit from projects that are modeled to mirror professional and research project structures.
The Audain Faculty of Visual Art + Material Practice offers majors in Illustration, Photography, Critical + Cultural Practice and Visual Arts; placing a strong emphasis on the development of conceptual, technical and historical knowledge. You will work in a stimulating, supportive studio environment developing tangible knowledge at the juncture of art and research. BACHELOR OF MEDIA ARTS Faculty of Design + Dynamic Media Animation, Film + Screen Arts and New Media + Sound The Animation Major is open and flexible, exploring diverse animation media while developing your skills as a creative animation designer. Your studies cover two-dimensional and three-dimensional computer animation, as well as a range of direct and digital approaches to storytelling. The Film + Screen Arts Major is dedicated to the exploration of a variety of media using contemporary digital media and historic analog and mechanical processes and practices. Along with the technical instruction, in depth and constructive critiques, mentoring, and extensive hands-on experience, you will develop into a self-aware and mature film practitioner.
The New Media + Sound Major provides a historical, critical and technical framework within which students master the conceptual and practical skills for producing creative, innovative, experimental and critical new media research and projects that employ electronic technologies for open ended inquiry, examining how art and technology can contribute towards positive social change. ENRICHING OPPORTUNITIES ENTRANCE SCHOL ARSHIPS Emily Carr University awards a number of entrance scholarships to new students with high academic achievement and creative potential. Work Integrated Learning opportunities like research assistantships, paid internships or co-op education integrate classroom learning with periods of professional work experience, enabling students to apply their knowledge and skills in the fields of media arts, visual arts and design. Industrial Design 2016 jjmah.com Like most Vancouverites, JJ Mah’s passion for the outdoors and location in beautiful Vancouver, BC has informed his Industrial Design practice. He came to Emily Carr with a background in Cinematography, having worked on such films as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Godzilla, and Business having studying at Harvard Business School. For his 4th year Grad project, JJ designed Thermo Wrap, a new and innovative alpine rescue system responding to the needs of Vancouver’s local mountain enthusiasts. Since graduation JJ has gone on to design for Arc’teryx in their Ascent Alpine department.

Fine Arts 2011 angelateng.com Vancouver based artist, Angela Teng employs a laborious dedication to the processes of craft through abstraction and a studio-based exploration of materials and painting. Teng has exhibited her work in Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Saskatoon, New York and Chicago. She is a finalist for the 2016 RBC painting competition and has a solo show in October 2016 at Vancouver’s Equinox Gallery.

Film, Video and Integrated Media 2011 loebben.com While completing his fourth year at Emily Carr, Benjamin Loeb and his long term creative partner Kevan Funk had their first short accepted at TIFF. Since then he has had work screened at TIFF, and many other international festivals. He is also a freelance cinematographer focusing on features, and commercials for clients such as; GE, YSL and Adidas, and music videos for bands such as Odesza and The Belle Game.
