Dear Friends,

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Board of Directors, donors and friends, the Truman Library Ins tute had great success in advancing the preserva on, outreach and research ac vi es of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum during the past year. The events and accomplishments shown in this annual report are the culmina on of the hard work, leadership and generosity of many. We are pleased to share this report with you – and especially the following highlights: •

More than 28,000 students and teachers par cipated in the Truman Library’s acclaimed educa onal programs – including the White House Decision Center and Museum Tours.

On March 10, 2011, the special exhibi on, George Caleb Bingham’s Missouri, opened to the public. The exhibi on featured a number of famous Bingham portraits, pain ngs, drawings and prints, including his masterpiece, “Order No. 11, Mar al Law,” which was on loan from The State Historical Society of Missouri. Approximately, 50,000 individuals toured the exhibit during its six-month run.

Supreme Court Jus ce Stephen Breyer made a special appearance for a book event, drawing a crowd of nearly 750. The Jus ce was just one of the notable speakers that par cipated in the Ins tute’s public programs throughout the year. In total, more than 3,790 people a ended these events.

The fi h annual Howard and Virginia Benne Forum on the Presidency, held on October 29, featured an outstanding panel of dis nguished statesmen – including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. 700 guests a ended this year’s program, PresidenƟal Power Abroad: From Truman to Obama, which was widely acclaimed as the best one yet.

Programs and events held during the past year featured collabora on with a number of important partners – including the Kansas City Public Library, The State Historical Society of Missouri, the Junior Service League of Independence, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the US Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth – just to name a few. We are extremely grateful to these organiza ons for the important assistance they provided.

In May, the Truman Library Ins tute received a $1 million grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Founda on’s Legacy Fund. This generous commitment funded the development and launch of two new ini a ves – a Marshall Planrelated scholars project and an expanded partnership with the Kansas City Public Library. It also supported exis ng educa onal programs.

We hope this annual report gives you an idea of how exci ng it has been for all of us who play a role in advancing President Truman’s legacy. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is a wonderful ins tu on – a place of discovery, explora on, scholarship and life-long learning. With your ongoing support, we will con nue to use the legacy of this remarkable leader and his library to be er interpret our past, understand our present, and create an inspired future. Sincerely, Mary Hunkeler and Alex Burden

Exhibitions Memories of Korea The special exhibi on, Memories of Korea, closed on December 31, 2010. During its 9-month run, approximately 60,000 visitors saw the exhibit, which was a centerpiece of our KOREA60 commemora on. Dolls for Democracy January 7 - March 6, 2011, the Truman Library and Museum hosted a special exhibi on, Dolls for Democracy, on loan from the Western Historical Manuscript Collec on – Kansas City. The Truman Library Ins tute would like to thank for Mrs. Borens ne for her efforts in bringing this historic collec on to the Truman Library, as well as Joanie Kort, for presen ng an educa onal program about the dolls in conjuncon with the exhibit’s run. New Working Office Updates In May, the Truman Library, debuted the final phase of the Truman Working Office project when new state-of-the-art interac ve exhibits were installed in the Truman Working Office Gallery. The new interac ve technology allows visitors to experience the office where President Truman worked for almost ten years like never before. The exhibit includes touch screen videos, audio clips, and photographs featuring President Truman’s ac vi es at the Truman Library and interac ons with notable visitors. Exhibits Continued Steamboats to Steam Engines: George Caleb Bingham’s Missouri, 1819-1879 The Truman Library’s special exhibi on Bingham’s Missouri proved to be a highlight a rac on for visitors of all ages. From its run March 8 through September 11, more than 49,757 visitors – including 6,728 students – saw the historic display. The Truman Library is grateful to the exhibit’s tle sponsors, Cindy and Ken McClain, and to a number of pres gious organiza ons, whose loan of Bingham portraits, painting, drawings and prints made this exhibit possible. These partners include The State Historical Society of Missouri, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the St. Louis Museum of Art, the Na onal Archives and several others. The Truman Library Ins tute would also like to thank exhibit sponsor Allen and Barbara Le o, and Mary Shaw Branton for graciously loaning a Bingham pain ng from her personal collec on.

2012 Exhibit Preview Tracing The Trumans: An American Story Following the passing of Margaret Truman Daniel in 2008, the Truman Library received a new collec on of never-before-seen historical materials from the Truman and Wallace families. These materials include a sizeable collec on of items from Mrs. Daniel’s estate, as well as new addi ons to the Bess Wallace Truman collec on. According to Truman Library Museum Curator Clay Bauske, this will be the last significant addi on of Truman materials to the Library’s holdings of its kind. Many of these documents, photographs and ar facts directly relate to Harry and Bess’s personal lives as well as the family histories of the Wallaces and Trumans. In total, they provide a rare and fascina ng glimpse into the lives of Harry and Bess’s ancestors – and an interes ng view into the early history of Eastern Jackson County. The Truman Library will create a wonderful new museum exhibi on, Tracing the Trumans: An American Story, featuring documents, photographs and ar facts from this extensive collec on. The exhibit, which will run from March 9, through December 31, 2012, will focus on the Truman and Wallace families, their personal lives, family backgrounds and the roles these families played in Independence and Jackson County over the last 150 years. The Truman Library Ins tute is very pleased to be partnering with the Junior Service League of Independence in the presenta on of this exhibi on. The Junior Service League, as tle sponsor, is underwri ng the conserva on and preserva on of the Truman and Wallace Family Collec on, as well as exhibit-related educa onal programs that will be provided to local students. Trained docents use an interac ve, inquiry-based approach during tours to spark curiosity, develop looking techniques, and expand cri cal-thinking skills. Overall, museum tours immerse students in a history experience – complete with interac ve exhibits, films and ar facts designed to explore the historical, cultural and social context of the life and mes of Harry Truman. THE ‘BUS STOPS HERE’ FIELD TRIP GRANT PROGRAM Public school systems con nue to struggle with shrinking budgets, and have reduced, if not eliminated altogether, school field trips and out of classroom learning experiences. According to a recent report by the American Associa on of School Administrators, fifty-one percent of schools na onwide reported elimina ng field trips for the 2010/2011 school year. This unfortunate trend has occurred despite the fact that most experts agree that field trips are an important part of a child’s educa on. Unfortunately, local school districts were not immune to this trend – and in 2009 many began elimina ng field trip opportuni es for their students. That same year, The Truman Library experienced a no ceable decline in par cipa on in its educa on programs. In response, the Truman Library Ins tute, commi ed to reaching as many students as possible through its exis ng and new educa on programs, created The ‘Bus Stops Here’ Field Trip Grant Program. Thanks to the availability of these scholarship funds, thousands of students have been able to visit the Truman Library and parcipate in our acclaimed educa on programs over the past three years who otherwise would not have been able to do so. The ‘Bus Stops Here’ Field Trip Grant Program provided the funds necessary for 4,099 students to visit the Truman Library during the 2010-11 school year, and we would like to thank the following generous donors whose underwri ng support made this possible: CPS Founda on, Francis Family Founda on, Arvin Go lieb Charitable Founda on, Edward G. and Evelyn E. TRUMAN KAUFFMAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM The Truman Library Ins tute, with funding support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Founda on, launched a major new research ini a ve and public lecture series in the fall of 2011. With the history and legacy of the Marshall Plan serving as a founda onal premise, the Ins tute will provide funding to six senior scholars over the next three years to support archival research, fellowships, and public forums focused on historical and current examples of economic development, moderniza on and societal reconstruc on. Par cipa ng scholars will present their findings through the project’s public component. Each scholar will also be expected to produce a major book on his or her research, which will be published by Cambridge University Press, who has agreed to partner with the Ins tute on this ini a ve.

THE TRUMAN LIBRARY’S DIGITAL ARCHIVE CONTINUES TO EXPAND IN SIZE AND REACH The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum provides students, teachers, and researchers from around the world with access to the most important papers, photographs and records from President Truman and his administra on. This project – currently in its 14th year – can be accessed by anyone at trumanlibrary.org, and includes the following resources: 40,080 documents, 30,794 photos, 500 oral histories, 700+ finding aids, subject guides and lesson plans. In building the digital archive, Truman Library archivists priori zed the collec on in order to make available those primary source materials that hold the highest research interest and significance. Records are accessed via a Google driven content management system. Users also benefit from the availability of helpful finding aids, subject guides, lesson plans and other reference resources. In total, these digital resources provide unprecedented access and cri cal insight into Harry Truman, his presidency and the world-altering decisions that his administra on made during a cri cal juncture in American history. The Truman Library Ins tute’s decision to make a significant investment in the Truman Library’s digital archive was prescient. Electronic research visits, reference requests, and web traffic are at an all- me high. More than ever, scholars – ranging from local high school students to interna onal researchers – are focusing their a en on on Truman as one of America’s greatest Presidents. This is evident by the 2.4+ million individual users that visited trumanlibrary.org during the past year. This ini a ve would not have been possible without generous financial support from a number of private funders. Since the Truman Library Ins tute’s decision to make the crea on of the digital archive a priority in 1998, the combined philanthropic support this project has received totals $2.7 million. In par cular, we would like to acknowledge the William T. Kemper Founda on’s leadership and generosity. We would also like to thank the Ewing Marion Kauffman Founda on for its support of our digi za on efforts.
