100th Anniversary Gala: A History of Changing Futures
A HISTORY OF CHANGING FUTURES One-hundred years ago, in June 1916, a group of women from Jackson County were inspired to make a difference in their community as they joined together for Bible study. Moved by the simple verse, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” these women decided to take action to help local families who were struggling with poverty. Their progressive action created the foundation for what would become the nonprofit relief organization, Community Services League (CSL). They set in motion a pillar of philanthropy that has been providing life-changing assistance and breaking the cycle of poverty for thousands of individuals and families in our community during the past century. One of the founding members of this powerhouse group was Bess Wallace Truman. Mrs. Truman would go on to become First Lady of the United States, but serving others in need in her hometown of Independence, Missouri remained a life-long priority for Mrs. Truman and her husband, President Harry S. Truman. This legacy lives on in the services CSL provides today. During the past 100 years, CSL’s charitable efforts have evolved to address client needs. From the Great Depression to the Great Recession and beyond, CSL has been here to help families and individuals in need with emergency services for food, clothing, and shelter. In the early days, coal was provided to keep families warm during bitter Midwest winters; now CSL offers utility assistance programs. Generations ago, staff and volunteers helped place those in need in factory and farm-hand jobs; now clients can receive employment readiness and placement services through CSL’s Work Express program. Even though society advances and the faces change, the struggle of living in poverty remains very real for thousands of men, women, and children living in our community today. The basic philosophy of giving a hand up, not a hand out has remained steadfast for CSL. Helping others achieve self-sufficiency is central to the organization’s mission. All programs and services are designed to help those they serve attain – and maintain – economic stability. Stories of success are bountiful: THE YOUNG MOTHER who lost her husband and then her family’s housing due to health issues, battling back with the help of CSL to secure a good job and home for her and her children. THE ELDERLY COUPLE who resorted to living in a tent off a local highway after illness depleted their funds and ability to work, overcoming homelessness with help from CSL to find housing, jobs and healthcare support. THE MIDDLE-CLASS SUBURBAN FAMILY who fell on hard times after losing jobs in the recession, finding hope by connecting with CSL resources for food and utility assistance to get back on their feet, then going on to become CSL volunteers and continue the circle of giving. Going into the next 100 years, CSL is on a mission to not only provide critical support services, but set the standard for breaking the cycle of poverty and become a model for helping those in need achieve self-sufficiency. Born from bold, progressive thinking 100 years ago, CSL is paving the way for a new century of providing solutions, changing futures, and creating a new legacy of caring in our community.
Dear Friend of Community Services League: When Bess Wallace Truman and her Bible study friends first formed a nonprofit to help local families suffering from poverty in 1916, I am sure they could not fathom the impact their program, now known as Community Services League (CSL), would still be making 100 years later. They were solving needs in real-time, but had the vision to know that poverty – and its causes – never really goes away. The families and faces changes, but obstacles in life happen across all generations. They established a legacy of caring 100 years ago. As we move into the next 100 years at CSL, it is an opportunity to create a new legacy for changing futures. Our Board, Executive Team, Staff, and dedicated volunteer base is working hard to achieve our vision of providing sustainable services that will enable individuals and communities to reach their potential and economic stability. While that is the business at hand, this is also a time for celebration. And we have a full year of stellar centennial celebrating planned! We invite you to join in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of CSL’s Centennial Celebration. This is a unique occasion to align your marketing efforts with community reinvestment. By becoming a CSL Centennial Sponsor you will enjoy a host of distinctive promotional benefits while having a positive impact in our local community by changing futures for those in need. Please review the enclosed sponsorship levels and benefits. A CSL representative will be contacting you to discuss options and how you can be a part of this exclusive year-long, high-profile campaign. If you prefer, please contact me directly at 816.912.4484 or cowand@cslcares.org. CSL’s founders left a legacy with their vision, actions, and continued support. On behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff, I invite you to join us in creating a new legacy of caring and ensuring CSL will be here to serve for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Doug Cowan President and CEO
