FACES OF JOB ONE
2017 Annual Report
A Message from the President/CEO Aaron Martin That Look of Pride When I sat down to consider the theme of this annual report, “Faces of Job One,” my mind took me back more than 13 years. That is how long I have been at Job One, and before that its predecessor organization, Foundation Workshop, Inc. If you stop and think of it, our lives are made up of many faces – those of our family, friends, mentors, co-workers, etc. For those of us who serve in the nonprofit world this also includes the faces of those we have the honor of serving. I must admit It is hard for me to believe that I have worked in the nonprofit industry for 26 years now. My journey led me to work with organizations that serve individuals with disabilities throughout my career. It is virtually impossible for me to even count the number of faces of extraordinary people I have worked beside all these years. However, upon reflection, daily at Job One I see something in common with all these individuals in the faces of our employees. I see something extraordinary in the faces of our outstanding professional staff members, the generations of dedicated board members, and the growing number of donors who support our mission. Perhaps one of the most important things I see are the sense of purpose and dignity that shine on the faces of those we serve. I have come to know that being employed is a key factor in leading a rewarding and meaningful life for most of us. I feel it in the satisfaction that comes from knowing that together we have completed a task that provides physical and emotional rewards for everyone involved. I am talking about pride. When I look in the faces of our employees each day, I see this feeling of pride in the work they are each doing to the best of their ability. This is the look that inspires me and reminds me every day why we are all here at Job One. I am inspired each day by all the special relationships that I observe between our exceptional staff members and the employees we serve, as well as their supportive relationships with each other. I am proud to be a part of this transformative organization and look forward to what we will accomplish together in the future. Thank you all for your part in making the “Faces of Job One” possible. Sincerely,
2017 A Year In Review
50th Anniversary Job One is Golden
In 1967 a group of concerned citizens and families took action to create job opportunities for a group of 15 adults with disabilities who were seeking employment choices with purpose. We’ve grown to offer a wide range of opportunities and services for hundreds of individuals each year in the Kansas City region.
CARF Accreditation Achieving Excellence
Job One is a CARF International (Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited organization. In 2017 the organization received an excellent rating from the independent accrediting body which monitors health and human service organizations based on international standards. We strongly consider this independent evaluation to be a significant factor in keeping the quality, outcomebased transparency of the organization at a very high level.
Salary & Wage Improvement Expanding choice. Making gains.
The core of the mission of Job One is not only providing choice, but delivering opportunities for greater self-sufficiency and financial independence. Over 2017, we were able to grow our average hourly wage for employees with disabilities by 34% and maintain wages 66% higher than the state average.
Brand Update
Vibrant new look and feel.
With input from staff, board members, and community members, we rolled out a fresh new look in 2017. This included a new logo, colors, and tag line that sums up what we are: “Business on a Mission.
A Message from the Board of Directors Chair Amy Schmidt The Face of Commitment I believe it was my destiny to serve on the board of Job One. I also believe that I was born to work with and care for individuals with disabilities in my professional and personal life. I was blessed to grow up with parents who were actively engaged in the Special Olympics and other activities that supported children with disabilities and their families. I was encouraged to participate in these programs with them. The joy of being around these special people and their families taught me so much about strength and courage. I quite simply fell in love with their enthusiasm and determination to live the best possible life. In 1994, I founded a company called Aurora MAJIC to provide residential care and coordination of all services for ladies with developmental disabilities. Three years later, I began serving on the board of the Foundation Workshop which would become Job One in 2011. I have had the honor of serving as Chair of the Board of Directors for four years now. I am surrounded by extraordinary men and women who demonstrate the meaning of commitment in a multitude of ways. They volunteer their time serving on committees, they contribute funds to support the mission of Job One, and they encourage others to learn about and join them in supporting this fine organization. I am inspired by Job One President & CEO, Aaron Martin who has built a leadership team and management staff that are second to none. Together they provide opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to reach their individual potential. There is a deep commitment and an entrepreneurial spirit among the staff and board that led us to achieve some wonderful things in 2017. Looking forward, I have every reason to believe that as a “team” we will strengthen and broaden the education, training, and wide range of employment opportunities for adults with disabilities. We will continue our efforts to develop innovative new services to better serve current and future employees. Finally, on behalf of my fellow board members, I thank all of the individuals, companies, and a growing list of community foundations that make it possible for Job One to be an amazing “Business on a Mission.” With warmest regards,
