SOFTBALL

2015

The Northeast-10 Conference The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont.

In all, 80 different Northeast-10 Conference teams were selected to participate in NCAA Championship play during the 2012-13 academic year. The 80 programs represented 15 of the 16 conference institutions. From the field of play to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2011-12 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. Of the nearly 6,000 honor roll selections for the fall and spring, 244 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The conference also honored 260 student-athletes that excelled at a high level on the field and in the classroom as members of academic all-conference teams.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 include Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.). The 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y.

Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused on complementing the academic integrity and missions of its member institutions with a commitment to a broad-based championship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports the conference offers in championship play, the most such of any Division II conference.

Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester, and New York City. The conference was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in its latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 30 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in the classroom.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field, of more than 6,000 student athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s track and field, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

• • • • •

Adelphi Softball has received a total of 14 invites to the NCAA tournament, six while a Division I program and eight at its current Division II status. The Panthers’ longest run at national championships came in back-to-back years in 1984 and 1985 where the Brown and Gold placed fifth in the College World Series. The 1982 squad was the first to make the NCAAs, losing in the third game to Western Michigan. Tied for the strongest softball team in Adelphi’s history, the 1984 team made it all the way to the College World Series and finished fifth overall. The 1988 team was the last Panther team to date to make the College World Series. The Brown and Gold had a final ranking of seventh and lost to Nebraska 5-1 In 1990, the Panthers made the Division I tournament one final time. The program made the jump to Division II in 1995. After a 10-year hiatus, the Brown and Gold returned to the NCAA tournament in 2000 - the program’s first appearance

at Division II level, under the direction of Head Coach Kate Whalen. Three years later, the Panthers returned to the NCAAs and fought their way to the final round, drawing C.W. Post. The Pioneers came out on top, 4-1. In 2006, the Panthers picked up two wins in the postseason; however, due to inclement weather, the tournament was canceled and finished third in the bracket. In his only year at the helm, Head Coach Joe Burbridge returned the Brown and Gold to the 2007 tournament, marking the first time since 1988 that the program reached that stage in consecutive years. Continuing the streak of appearances, Head Coach Paige Smith guided the Panthers back to the 2008 tournament for their 11th appearance as a program. First-year Head Coach Breanne Nasti guided the Brown and Gold to an East Super Regional appearance, hosted on Janet L. Ficke Field, in 2013 before the Panthers fell in two games to Molloy College.

In his one year of guidance, Head Coach Joe Burbridge returned the Brown and Gold to the 2007 tournament for the first time back to back since 1988.

Continuing the streak of appearances, Head Coach Paige Smith guided the Pan-thers back to the 2008 tournament for their 11th appearance as a program.

Softball Team History Adelphi University’s varsity softball program began in 1972 under the direction of Janet L. Ficke, and such began an era not to be matched by any other Adelphi program. In 17 years at the helm of the softball program, Ficke amassed a 362-160-3 record, five NCAA Tournament berths and three College World Series appearances. Ficke, along with coach Kathryn Raub, led the Panthers to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1982. The Panthers returned two years later to claim its first Regional title, and an eventual fifth place in the NCAA College World Series. Adelphi returned to the World Series again in 1985, finishing fifth for the second time. In 1985, coach Ficke turned over the program to Kathryn Raub, staying on as Associate Head Coach. In 1987, Raub was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year. In 1993 Kate Whalen, formerly the assistant softball and volleyball coach at Fairfield University, took over as coach of the Panthers, successfully transitioning the program from Division I to Division II. She has guided the team to ten winning season in her 11 years at Adelphi. Adelphi competed at the Division II level for the first time in 1995, finishing 13-27 overall. Although it faced some East Coast Conference (ECC) teams in the past, Adelphi officially began ECC play that same year. It did not take Adelphi long to earn conference honors. In 1996, Deanna Ivanicki and Terri Moran were named All-ECC and in 1996 coach Whalen was named the ECC Coach of the Year. The 1997 team set three milestones, finishing with 30 wins, bringing home its first-ever ECC title with a 8-2 win over C.W. Post and its first ECAC Mid-Atlantic title. In 1999, the team set a new season best, finishing 33-18, for its most successful season to-date since becoming a Division II program. The Panthers finished second at the ECC tournament. The 2000 season marked another first, claiming the program’s first ever ECC Regular season Championship. Adelphi also made its first NCAA tournament appearance as a Division II program, and the team’s first bid in 10 years. The Panthers, 27-20, finished third at Regionals.

In 2001, the Panthers again set a new school record for most wins, with a 34-21 overall record and capped with their second ECAC Mid-Atlantic title in three years. In 2002, host Adelphi finished second to Pace University in the ECAC Tournament and second in the ECC tournament with a 31-18-1 overall record. The 2003 team set a new Division II school record for wins in a season, posting a 35-17 mark. The Panthers made their second-ever NCAA DII Tournament appearance and had four players named to the Northeast region team. No. 2 Adelphi again hosted the ECAC Tournament in 2004, finishing third overall. The Panthers went 27-21 on the season and 19-5 in the ECC to a third place regular season finish. The 2005 Panthers saw their post-season dreams cut short with an early exit in the ECC Tournament to Bridgeport, 1-0. Adelphi (25-16) posted its tenth consecutive 20+ win season and received four All-ECC selection. Junior Amy Delmore was not only named ECC Player of the Year, but earned All-America second team honors for her outstanding performance in 2005. She is just the third Adelphi player to receive All-America recognition and the first since 1988. In October, 2005, after a successful fund-raising campaign, the softball field was renamed Janet L. Ficke Field. Adelphi returned to the NCAA DII Regional in 2006, finishing third overall. The Panthers won their last tournament game vs. UMass-Lowell, 5-1, but because of rain delays, the Regional was cut short with the winner determined by overall record. Carla Buonviaggio and Amy Delmore earned NCAA Northeast Region All-Tournament honors. Coach Whalen picked up her second ECC Coach of the Year honor for leading her team to a 16-5 league record and a second place finish. Six players earned allconference honors including ECC Rookie of the Year, Jessica Vogt. Dely Francisco set a new single-season steals record (21) and was named ECC Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Panthers continued their winning tradition in 2007, but this time without the guidance of Kate Whalen who

resigned her position after 12 years. Under Whalen, Adelphi recorded three NCAA Tournament appearances and an ECAC title. First-year Head Coach Joe Burbridge, inherited a talented squad which opened the season with a solid 6-3 record at the Rebel Games, their best start since 1988. The Panthers went on to set a new Division II school record for most wins in a season (39) and longest win streak (11) en route to a regular season conference title and their third NCAA appearance in five years. Six players were named to All-ECC teams and four earned NFCA AllRegion honors. Sophomore Diana DiPiano was selected to the NCAA Northeast Region All-Tournament Team. The Panthers, under the direction of first year head coach Paige Smith, eclipsed the Adelphi Division II season wins record with 41 victories en route to their third straight NCAA Regional appearance. They were just shy of the school’s overall win record of 42 set during the 1983 season for the Division I Panthers. Adelphi, which finished second in the ECC in the regular season and tournament, earned the number three seed going into the NCAA regional but fell to Bryant College, 4-0, in the first round before rallying back with a 13-10 win over NYIT. The Panthers saw their College World Series dream cut short with a 6-4 loss to Caldwell College. Juniors Jessica Vogt and Diana DiPiano were named to the all-tournament team.

Year. Schaper boasted a 22-5 overall record and 1.68 ERA on the mound and led the league in strikeouts and opposing batting average. She cracked the 500 strikeouts and 50 wins mark wins, finishing her career with 570 strikeouts and 56 wins. This ranks her second and fourth in Adelphi’s all-time history, respectively. Other Adelphi records fell as senior Dely Francisco shattered the single-season (51) and career (92) stolen bases records. She set new single season records for at-bats (216), runs scored (51) and hits (84) and led the conference in all four categories as well.

In 2009, Softball opened the season with a strong 6-4 road trip at the Rebel Games, enough to receive votes in the NFCA Top-25 Division II poll, before coming back to New York to battle not only opponents but the weather, as 10 games were either cancelled or postponed. Adelphi gave up a couple of splits early in the season, but reeled off wins in 17 of their final 20 games to close out the regular season 32-12 overall and 14-4 in ECC play, earning the second seed in the ECC tournament.

The Panthers faced C.W. Post in the first round of the ECC tournament, dropping a close 3-1 decision and followed that up with a 2-0 loss to Molloy, ending the season at 32-14 overall. Samantha Johnston was ECC Player of The Year and a second-team Daktronics AllAmerican.
