ave you ever wished that when you were in your 20’s, someone told you the ins and outs, dos and don’ts of hosting people in your home? Am I supposed to clean my entire house? How early do I start? When do I start making the food? Do I have to do everything the day of? What if my guests offer to bring something or help clean up? ++ Topic of Choice: how to host people in your home ++ Title: The Art of Hosting ++ Audience: Newly weds, young couples, 20-30 year old women

CONCEPT DESCRIPTION Most people have these questions when they host their first party. I want to create a magazine that contains all the information one might need to host people in their home for various parties. This magazine will be a staple for young couples who are still trying to figure out life.

CONTENT OVERVIEW The content will range from setting the table for various occasions, how much food to order/make for your guests, tips and tricks for the host/hostess pre party and during the party, recipes, how to decorate and prepare for major holidays, how to prepare for different themed parties, and more.

CELEBRATE MAGAZINE

LIVING MAGAZINE by martha stewart

++ $20 on Amazon

++ $7.99 on Hoffman Media

++ $10 Annually

++ Market to the 20-something woman

++ Consistent use of main four sections (Home / Celebrate / Party Art / Recipes)

++ Very well known brand

++ Seems more like a pretty coffee table book that isn’t as informational as I would like mine to be.

++ Lacks unique design and seems a bit cluttered

++ Very broad topics. I would rather focus on newly wed 20-somethings rather than stay at home moms.

++ The flatlay was super fun to photograph for this one. The lighting and editing looks incredible in the printed magazine, and the article heading and paragraph works so well as an introduction to the recipes that follow.

++ The recipes were a challenge yet a blast to photograph. A lot of them were time sensitive before the ice started melting, chips got soggy, etc. At first, I had all the left pages as a 90% gray, then I decided to switch to a color pulled from the photos on the right hand page, and I am so glad I did.

++ Deciding to add this page to my magazine actually got me out of my creative block. I wanted a more minimal look, but my pages were very cluttered. Adding this page created breathing room and the minimal look I was going for all along. It is simply a beautiful spread highlighting the photographs and gave the magazine that “coffee table read vibe I wanted.

T

his honestly turned in to one of my favorite projects. I just received my magazine in the mail today, and after physically holding it and flipping through it, I am much more proud of it than I thought I would be. It is incredibly rewarding to hold a final product in my hand, knowing it was entirely produced by me from the layout, ot the content, to the photographs, to the illustrations, to the articles. The biggest principle I learned from this project is the importance of paragraph styles and character styles. It is something I want to start implementing in any project I do because it speeds up the process and creates consistency in one simple click.

HIGHS ++ Creating, styling, and photographing the recipe spreads

++ Photographing the flatlays and learning how to use natural light and flash together ++ Pushing and challenging myself to illustrate the “How to Set the Table” section ++ Creating my ads ++ Getting friends involved in the photography/baking process and creating excitement about the final product of my magazine!

LOWS ++ Finalizing the exact content I wanted within the magazine ++ Creative Road Block and being frustrated with my layout—ultimately I was trying to cram information while also aiming for a “minimal” look ++ Learning my 22 page plan was actually not possible, and having to add 2 pages of content at the last minute
