project overview the assignment This branding project required designing a visual system for a fictional event. The asssignment consisted of listening to the “Inside the Lines” Spotify playlist and choosing a song to inspire our design. The main objective of the project was to strengthen conceptual skills through design.
SONG CHOICE I chose Such Great Heights by The Postal Service. At first it was hard for me to choose a song, because I liked so many. I also wanted to push myself through this project so I put a lot of pressure on what I chose. I had a different idea in mind for Such Great Heights, then all of a sudden I thought of a hot air balloon festival. It just seemed right to me, so I decided to go with it.
CONCEPT Design wise, I knew I wanted to go with bolder colors and more of a geometric look. In the past, I have designed a lot of kraft paper / neutral colored projects, so I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I feel like the techno style of this song matches the feeling I was going for, so everything just seemed right. The lyrics that stuck out to me the most were, “they will see us waving from such great heights, ‘come down now,’ they’ll say, but everything looks perfect from far away, ‘come down now,’ but we’ll stay...” I instantly pictured people in a hot air balloon looking down at the busyness of the world below them, enjoying their time and not wanting to get down.

They own a dog and have a more upscale fashion sense. They love to drink wine and play board games with their friends. They love good music and traveling abroad.
The Anderson Family Young couple with two sons who reside in the Phoenix, AZ area. They love spending as much time as they can as a family and love being outdoors. They care about giving their kids a good education and making memories as a family.
John and Katherine Older couple residing in Phoenix, AZ. This couple adores each other. Their kids have left the nest and have their own kids, but John and Katherine still love to go on adventures. They love meeting new people and experiencing new things.

closing narrative STRENGTHS
Once I chose my song and nailed down my concept, designing was easy. I had a vision in my head of exactly what I wanted, and I finally achieved it. I wanted to push myself with Illustrator, and I did just that. Design wise, strengths include a strong consistency with the bold yellow being the main color. Also, choosing, for the most part, one all-caps font keeps a bold consistency as well. The balloons repeated throughout various pieces tie everything in as well.
goals achieved
The purpose of the project was to grow our conceptual designing skills. In some of my iterations, I tried to create a very literal poster. I was not thinking conceptually, and I was frustrated with myself because I knew I could do better. Ultimately, I think the route I chose was a good choice because I hardly incorporated blue, the color one might think of the most when relating to hot air balloons.
Learning outcomes
I definitely learned way more about Illustrator. This whole project was designed in Illustrator, and I have a better understanding of the program now. I also learned how to print on vellum and sticker paper to make more unique ideas come to life.
