DIPYRAMID

by Emily Greene

Dipyramid is a graphic, stranded colorwork hat knit in the round. This hat features a deep, folded brim in 2x2 ribbing, and a playfully geometric colorwork motif that transitions through a gradient from main to contrast color at the crown. An optional tubular cast-on and jaunty pom pom provide polished finishing touches. While the finished beanie appears complex, an easy, twocolor chart and relatively short floats make this playful, modern hat accessible to a wide range of knitters. Work the ribbing in the main color and the pom pom in the contrast to emphasize the gradient effect, or invert them for a bigger graphic punch.

INSTRUCTIONS Cast On

Note: If you wish to omit the tubular cast-on, cast on 120 (128, 136, 144) stitches in your MC working yarn using your preferred cast-on method and Size B needle (suggested size US 2 / 2.75 mm), place marker for BOR and join for working in the round, then proceed to instructions for Ribbing. Work through Round 7 as described in SPECIAL TECHNIQUES: Tubular Cast-On. You now have 120 (128, 136, 144) stitches on your needle. Switch to Size B needle (suggested size US 2 / 2.75 mm).

Work Ribbing

Round 1: *K2, p2; repeat from * to end of round. Repeat Round 1 until piece measures 4 3/4” [12 cm] from the cast-on edge.

Establish Main Pattern

Switch to Size A needle (suggested size US 3 / 3.25 mm). Set-Up Round: Using MC yarn, knit all stitches. Note: Join CC yarn as you begin Round 1. You may place stitch markers between chart repeats during Round 1 if desired; be sure to use a unique marker to indicate the BOR. Round 1: Work Round 1 of Chart, working the 8-stitch repeat 15 (16, 17, 18) times across the round and changing colors as indicated. Continue as established, working Rounds 2-41 of Chart, and slipping markers as they are encountered.

Shape Crown

Work Rounds 42-48 of Chart, working decreases as indicated. [30 (32, 34, 36) stitches remain] Break MC yarn, leaving an 8” [20 cm] tail. Using CC yarn, complete crown decreases for your size as follows: Round 49: Knit all stitches. Round 50: *K1, CDD; repeat from * to last 2 (0, 2, 0) sts, k2 (0, 2, 0). [16 (16, 18, 18) stitches remain] Round 51: Knit all stitches.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES Tubular Cast-On

The tubular cast-on is optional; however, I highly recommend trying this technique, as it yields an exquisitely plump, stretchy edge that transitions flawlessly into the ribbing. Using waste yarn and Size C needle (suggested size US 1 / 2.25 mm), loosely cast on 61 (65, 69, 73) stitches using any cast-on method. Switch to your MC working yarn for all subsequent instructions. Set-Up Row (Increase row): *K1, YO; repeat from * to last st, k1. [121 (129, 137, 145) sts] Rearrange stitches as needed to join for working in the round, taking care not to twist your row of stitches. Join by slipping the last stitch worked in the Set-Up Row from your right needle to the left (purlwise), then place a stitch marker on your right needle to designate the beginning of the round. Round 1 (Tubular knit round): K2tog, *sl 1 wyif, k1; rep from * to last st, sl 1 wyif. [120 (128, 136, 144) sts] Round 2 (Tubular purl round): *Sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from * to end. Round 3 (Tubular knit round): *K1, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to end. Round 4 (Tubular purl round): *Sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from * to end. You will now rearrange your stitches for 2x2 ribbing; note that all stitches are slipped purlwise during this instruction, not worked, and that the working yarn can be dropped behind the work until the next round starts. Rearrange all stitches as follows: *Sl 1, sl 1 to CN and hold in back, sl 1 from left needle, sl 1 from CN, sl 1; rep from * to end. Round 5 (Tubular knit round): *K2, sl 2 wyif; rep from * to end. Round 6 (Tubular purl round): *Sl 2 wyib, p2; rep from * to end. Round 7 (True ribbing round): *K2, p2; rep from * to end. You have now completed the tubular cast-on and may remove the waste yarn used to cast on at any time by carefully snipping out or unravelling the cast-on. However, it is recommended that you work 1-2 of fabric before removing the waste yarn to ensure a stable, even edge for your ribbing.
