Hostel & Restaurant Design Program End Goal To design both a hostel and restaurant environment in Florence, Italy for traveling youth.
Necessary Programming Hostel Spaces Reception Area
User Needs
Bedroom Layout A - Single Bedroom Bedroom Layout B - Double/Triple ADA Compliant Bedroom
Youth are in need of a space that excites them and is memorable. The use of color will be stimulating in a way that creates a positive experience.
Bedroom Layout C - Six Person Bedroom
Today's youth need an oportunity to pause and enjoy the moment. The design needs to create a comfortable environments with opportunities to do so.
Lounge Area for Visitors
Restrooms Luggage Storage Convenience Store for Forgotten Items Casual Snack Bar
The design needs to be accepting of all who use it--not just physically with ergonomics, but with staff, aesthetic design choices, and more.
Cyber Cafe Space Reading Space Appropriate Stairs and Elevators
The design needs to make the user think. Today's youth are our future, so the experience of the hostel needs to enrich their minds and give them inspiration. The design needs to be usable by visitors of various shapes, sizes and abilities. It needs to be ADA accessible.
Restaurant Spaces Hallway Entrance Reception/Host Stand
The design needs to be comfortable ergonomically for the user. It needs to be a relaxing experience for visitors after days of physical travel. The design needs to be both sustainable and environmentally friendly. Recycled and local materials need to be used whenever possible. The design needs to address the various cultures of those who will visit. Various cultural norms need to be considered throughout the design process.
Restrooms Main Seating Area Indoor Bar with Seating Kitchen Area/Place for Imports Outdoor Dining Space Outdoor Bar Appropriate Stairs and Elevators
Research Inspired Design Color Theory Colors taking over white space symbolizes positive changes in culture due to youth ambition. The use of various colors in the rainbow allows for mental stimulation.
Main Colors/Textures Used
Inspiration Images
White makes the space feel clean while it's void of color plays a crucial role in the concept of the space.
The natural plywood color gives a refreshing feeling of informality.
Yellow is an energetic color that creates a feeling of eagerness.
Case Studies: Stay Hostel Location: Rhodes, Greece Features The Stay Hostel has shared kitchens and various types of rooms, including gender specific. The hostel is cleaned daily and guests are greeted with homemade lemonade. Hanging out in the Hostel's lounge is highly recommended, as there are afternoon game times.
Color The design uses pops of color paired with neutrals and bright whites for a contemporary look. The overall space feels warm and inviting.
Geometry The space uses a great deal of asymmetry mixed with clean lines. Triangles, circles and rectangles are mixed together for a modern and eclectic look. The geometry used is very contemporary.
Scale Natural elements are emphasized in scale (i.e. wood) and pops of color are at a small scale to keep from overwhelming the viewer.
Structure Cantilevered elements are used throughout the hostel for a modern look and the beds are all on the ground rather than bunk beds.
Light Natural light is used as a feature throughout the space. In the gym specifically, the design creates amazing shadows.
Environmental Natural light is used to save energy in the space. Additionally, sustainable materials are used including wood which is rapidly renewable.
Case Studies: Chillout Hostel Location: Zagreb, Croatia Features The Chillout Hostel has private bathrooms as all of the rooms are suites. The hostel is surrounded by attractions, landmarks and streetlife. The price of the hostel is very reasonable considering everything that is included. Additionally, the hostel is pet friendly.
Color The design uses extreme contrast between black and whites. The space uses intense colors and shapes throughout for stimulation. There are very few neutrals used in the space.
Geometry The geometry in the space explores both linearity and curvilinearity. It uses both asymmetry and symmetry at the same time. There are a lot of hard lines used to cut through space and there is a rectangular motif occurring.
Scale The greatest scale in the hostel goes to the painted designs on surfaces. Nearly every surface is painted with a large design that distracts from the structures themselves.
Structure The structures of the beds are rounded to make the sleeping spaces feel more unique and comforting. The drop ceilings in the space create interesting environments.
Light There is very little natural light throughout the space. LED, colorful lights are used to add excitement.
Environmental The space does not seem to be incredibly envrionmentally friendly. There is not a great deal of natural light to save energy and the materials used do not appear to be sustainable.
Case Studies: Maverick Hostel Location: Budapest, Hungary Features The Maverick Hostel is located in a former mansion, making it nicer than the average hostel. There are both dorms and suites available as well as a kitchen on every floor. There are five private rooms on the top floor and a quiet courtyard for relaxation. There are also no bunk beds used.
Color The design uses warm neutrals to create a feeling of comfort. There is not as much contrast in public spaces as in private spaces. The overall color scheme feels very regal.
Geometry The space uses asymmestry throughout. Additionally, there are a great deal of curves and abstract shapes used. The design feels very regal because of the organized structure of the space being mixed with curvilinear elements.
Scale Architectural elements such as stairs are highlighted with their large scale. Scale is used as a form of wayfinding in this way because of the beauty of transitional elements.
Structure Beds are not bunked but rather on raised platforms to create a new room entirely. The architecture in the space is very predictable for the most part because the style is recognizable.
Light Natural light is used throughout all of the spaces to make the hostel feel open. There is very little artificial light.
Environmental The natural light used saves energy, making the space more environmentally friendly. Plants are also used throughout the space as well as sustainable, long lasting materials.

Existing Conditions: Plus Hostel - Florence
The current design solution for the Plus Hostel of Florence, Italy is not as cohesive as it could be. The brand is not currently strong enough to influence the design in a way that is both understandable and impactful. At the moment, the hostel is nothing more than the average hostel. To combat this problem, a rebranding is necessary. The new branding solution needs to cater to the hostel's primary user, which is traveling youth. It needs to create both a stimulating and memorable environment that feels comfortable to the user. Visitors need to feel as though the hostel was designed for them.
Location/Plan Analysis The overall traffic flow of the hostel could use some improvement. The space becomes slightly confusing due to the use of hallways and a closed-off floor plan. The demolition of walls will create an open, understandable floor plan.
Level 1 Hostel Plan - NTS
PLUS Florence Hostel is located in the historical center of Florence, in via Santa Caterinad'Alessandria, 15/17, not far from Santa Maria Novella Train Station.
Areas in Need of Improvement The layout is in need of more ADA compliant spaces. Personal restrooms are extremely small and the bedrooms are not spacious enough. The "Cafeteria" area could be expanded to be more of a statement for the hostel. More exciting opportunities are needed within the hostel for those visiting such as lounges, stores, nooks, technology and more.

Restroom Problem
Door Problem
The personal restrooms in the bedrooms need to be larger in order to cater to people with disabilities. None of the existing restrooms are ADA compliant.
Almost all doors in the hostel are not wide enough for users in wheelchairs. Particularly in bedrooms, the doors and the clearances around them are not large enough.
In my design, I plan to include an ADA compliant bedroom that includes a compliant restroom as one of the bedroom layouts in order for those traveling in a wheelchair to have a comfortable and funtional space.
In my design, I plan to replace all existing doors with ADA compliant replacements. Additionally, especially in the ADA compliant bedrooms, I plan to add more than enough clearance around the doors for greater accessibility.

Concept Development
Concept: Time Times are changing. Today's youth are exploring acceptance and expression in admirable ways that have never been seen before. They are heading movements for equality, individuality, modularity and freedom. The concept of time explores the changes that have occurred as history has progressed. What used to be considered a luxurious villa in the past is nowhere near what is desireable today. Youth today are more interested in travel, informality, and new experiences. They do not want to be held down in one place. This change does not just stand true for architecture and location, but also for ideas. Oppression and judgment are a thing of the past. The youth are not just the future, they are now. This modern villa allows its visitors to be overtaken by the luxury of the new age--the creative, innovative force that is today's youth. It allows youth to celebrate themselves and their accomplishments. They can feel comfort in the fact that they are not only welcome, but they are also accepted for who they are.

The Villa Restaurant is meant to be used by those staying in the Villa Hostel. Outside access is possible through the main entrance and exterior space, but it is not expected. The restaurant follows the same concept as the rest of the hostel--it praises today's youth for their ability to speak up, make changes, and practice acceptance.

The silhouette outline of a head with the pause symbol in the center is a strong visual for the visitor as they enter the hostel. It makes a statement about the hostel's concept and it is one of the most memorable pieces in the design.

First Floor Hostel Reflected Ceiling Plan
The ceiling plan of the hostel shows the taking-over of plywood over white space which can also be seen implemented with flooring. This approach can be viewed as a form of wayfinding, for it invites the user into a new space.

Material Specifications: Surface Finishes & Furniture The goal when it comes to materials is to used recycled materials wherever possible. The use of glazed, recycled plywood is a motif throughout the space. Additionally, the idea behind the varied, colorful materials is that they, too, could be recycled material. The design is very eclectic, and would not be effected by the use of varied materials. With that being said, this page shows materials that would work well in the space and that could be used as models for alternatives. Sherwin Williams SW 7656 Rhinestone 3 coats recommended

Custom Furniture - Bedroom Storage The double/triple bedroom features two different storage solutions. This one is made for a full sized bed. The panel in the front would have an illuminated number to indicate where the user is meant to stay (see 3D renderings). The tall piece next to the bed is lockable and can be accessed from the front for hanging storage as well as the side for cabinet storage.
