Structure of Attraction

PREFACE Sex and Architecture It seems necessary to

create a seven part series in honour of the original format of The Kamasutra, as this text based piece aims to show the connection architecture has with sex. I will be basing the foundation of my ideas on a breakdown of the original book The Kamasutra written by Vātsyāyana, although as I am an English speaker, I must take translators words and trust they have done it justice to the language of Sanskrit.

I will be using the translated and published privately

version The Kamasutra by Sir Richard Burton In 1883. This piece of text alongside a more modern version, Wendy Doniger, an American Indologist, with a career spanning around five decades, she is a renowned scholar of Sanskrit, (the language of the original text by Vātsyāyana), and Indian textual traditions, Doniger has gained a reputation of being one of the “major scholars in humanities” in America.

From this I will show the connections I

myself have made from breaking down these translated versions, and in many ways sex runs parallel in many ways to architecture. This book aims to open your eyes to these ideas, that our everyday surroundings can connote sex, be designed with sex in mind, represent gender roles, destruction of structure can represent a feeling of sexual violation, and many other ideas, just read on.

MANUAL FOR A SENSUAL LIFE.

01. It is impossible to fix the exact date either of the life of Vātsyāyana or of his work. It is supposed that he must have lived between the first and sixth century of the Christian era, on the following grounds. He mentions that Satkarni Satvahan, a king of Kuntal, killed Malayevati his wife with an instrument called kartari by striking her in the passion of love, and Vatsya quotes this case to warn people of the danger arising from some old customs of striking women when under the influence of this passion. Now this king of Kuntal is believed to have lived and reigned during the first century A.c, and consequently Vatsya must have lived after him. 02. Describing it as an explicit and highly literary sex manual textbook.

“Right angles don’t attract me. Nor straight, hard and inflexible lines created by man. What attracts me are free and sensual curves. The At first glance, the main visible connection becurves we find in the tween the legendary Kamasutra book and the vast industry of Architecture is what they can teach us body of the woman about living, society and people. Although it is most known for its sexual positions variation of we love.” - Oscar Niemeyer sexual positions and advice offered in Part II, On Sexual Union, it also comes with very noticeable parallels to the ascetics of yoga, and bodies stretching, taking form and holding position, not much different to the structures we erect everyday. This book hopes to offer you a new perspective on the Kamasutra, through the eyes of architecture.

As it has been regarded as one of the first of its

kind, since its creation around 400BC-AD 2001, making it one of the oldest surviving texts of ancient Indian history according to renowned list, the 100 Books That Changed the World2. This seven part series hopes to open your mind, and allow you to reframe ideas you may have once had about the Kamasutra written by Vātsyāyana, we will also discuss the much anticipated sexual positions, and how they can have similar form to the built environment surrounding us.

PART 01 CHAPTER 01

The ever changing ideas surrounding sexuality

and the human form have influenced the design of structures in architecture, this must mean that the interior parts of a building may influence the behaviour of human beings at home, or at the office. Leaving the ever shameful topic of sex at the door, exploring Kamasutra alongside architecture that surrounds us may be just the thing to act to break down these taboos that say that Kamasutra isn’t a book to be taken seriously.

Hidden From View

In homes across the world the Kamasutra can be seen at the top of bookshelves placed there with This statement by an adolescent girl in Vikram a certain shame on Chandra’s story, “Kama,” rings true: “Sister Cannina didn’t want to tell us. It’s the Kama Sutra, which she being caught with the says isn’t in the library. But Gisela’s parents have a copy which they think is hidden away on the top of their shelf. We looked it up there.” And the book on display. adult to whom she tells this says, “You put that book back where you found it. And don’t read any more.”

Outside of India, the part of the Kamasutra

describing the positions may have been the bestthumbed passage in previous ages of sexual censorship, but nowadays, when sexually explicit novels, films, and instruction manuals are available everywhere, that part is the least useful in terms of learning about life.

Even reading the Kama Sutra, in a fine new

translation, feels like a guilty pleasure. In the mid60s, the Kama Sutra was, along with The Perfumed Garden and Venus in Furs, considered licentious and filthy, the very gateway to damnation. In the London suburbs in the early 60s, if a young man sought knowledge of sexual matters he had to traipse up to the West End to watch European films, and if particularly desperate during a tiresome evening might even be forced to turn to literature.

Many men and young teen boys owned copies of

contraband such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Lolita and other such serious stuff, along with Harold Robbins. The longer people avoid reading it, the more dreadful this famed carnival of desire and mayhem beccomes in your imagination. It turns out that Kamasutra: A Guide to the Art of Pleasure is a compendium of advice about social and romantic behaviour, for wealthy young men about town, containing information about hygiene and sexual positions.

PAGE 07

Yet it is all but ignored as a serious work in its country of origin, it is sometimes taken as a matter of national shame rather than pride and in the rest of the Not much is known about the original author, the book itself is most commonly known in English world it is a source of through the Sir Richard Francis Burton translation, published privately in 1883 as The Kama Sutra of Vātsyāyana. A more moder translation amused amazement, PHALLIC can be seen through Wendy Doniger’s work as a distinguished Indologist STRUCTURE not taken seriously. and scholar of Sanskrit and Indian textual traditions. Her research and teaching interests revolve around Hinduism and mythology addressing themes such as death, dreams, evil, literature, law, gender and zoology.

Wendy Doniger, has been the biggest influence in

helping understand the insights we can take from Kamasutra, not only this she has prepared a new translation with her colleague Sudhir Kahar, for Oxford World Classics revealing for the first time the text’s surprisingly THE EMPIRE modern ideas about gender and unexpectedly STATE BUILDING subtle stereotypes of feminine and masculine natures. Besides this it also reveals relatively liberal attitudes to women’s education and sexual freedom, and far more complex views of homosexual acts than are suggested by other texts of this period. It also makes us question Burton’s translation, and the influence of time on the translation.

When most people talk about the Kamasutra they discuss it in a joking manner, Doniger making her more contemporary translation widely available to the public in 2002, wanted to flip the script on this. Wanting to keep her translation modern, and to hopefully resurrect the Kamasutra as a serious book for sophisticated living for high society people, although most people think it is just about sexual positions, with very noticeable parallels to the ascetics of yoga, and bodies stretching, taking form and holding position.

ushering the old erotic theatre out of the straw and stick houses of pornography and into the little brick house of downtown art, which, huff and puff as he will, the Mayor cannot blow down.

space in your own home, its about to get personal. Have you ever considered your bedroom as a space of desire, and if so why not? Ask yourself is there a way to better the space, to achieve a higher level of pleasure.

like your bedroom, living space, or home office can have positive and reverberating effects throughout your life. Feng shui is all about balancing different elements such as wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, and ying with yang. The bagua map (which translates to “eight trigrams” in Chinese) is an important tool for creating this kind of harmony and balance throughout a space.

PARALLELS TO ARCHITECTURE. A Solid Foundation The human body has great similarities to buildings, both carefully considered and constructed with a foundation level, bones in the body are like solid columns supporting the entire biological system, and the buildings that we see around us function similar to that of the human body with columns of the steel to support the entire structure, just as bones support the human body.

As buildings are to function and perform for

humans, they must be designed with human form in mind, this leads to parallels in shape and form between the human body and that of a structure.

The origins of shibari may not be fully understood

by those who aren’t of Japanese heritage, but the complexity, intricacy, functionality, and aesthetics of this style of rope bondage have been recognized and appreciated by rope artists, educators, and enthusiasts all over the world.

BERNARD TSCHUMI

The game of architecture is an intricate play with rules that you may break or accept, these rules, like so many knots that cannot be untied, have the erotic significance of bondage: the more numerous and sophisticated the restraints, the greater the pleasure. Even the most excessive passion always involves a set of rules, so why not make it enjoyable?

WALK OF SHAME

Sexual Guilt The “walk of shame” is a Sunday morning ritual

on college campuses (and sometimes beyond) across the United States: young women, hair matted and still in last night’s skirt and heels, trudge home post-hook-up. It’s a uniquely female ritual, and the term itself evokes a singularly female image.

While men also have to go home after sex, often

disheveled and exhausted, there’s no shame attached to their commute. In a culture that imbues sexual activity in women with shame and judgment while applauding sexual prolificacy in men, it will surprise no one that women are more likely than men to report regretting sexual encounters. But according to a new study, it’s not cultural views of female sexuality that saddle women with regret; it is evolution.
