Sex and Architecture
PREFACE
It seems necessary to create a seven part series in honour of the original format of The Kamasutra, as this text based piece aims to show the connection architecture has with sex. I will be basing the foundation of my ideas on a breakdown of the original book The Kamasutra written by Vātsyāyana, although as I am an English speaker, I must take translators words and trust they have done it justice.
I will be using the translated and
published privately version The Kamasutra by Sir Richard Burton In 1883. Tthis piece of text alongside a more modern version, Wendy Doniger, an American Indologist, with a career spanning around five decades, she is a renowned scholar of Sanskrit, (the language of the original text by Vātsyāyana), and Indian textual traditions, Doniger has gained a reputation of being one of the “major scholars in humanities” in America.
From this I will show the connections I
myself have made from breaking down these translated versions, and in many ways sex runs parallel in many ways to architecture. This book aims to open your eyes to these ideas, that our everyday surroundings can connote sex, be designed with sex in mind, represent gender roles, destruction of structure can represent a feeling of sexual violation, and many other ideas, just read on.

The ever changing ideas surrounding sexuality

and the human form have influenced the design of structures in architecture, and even further than this, how the internal parts of an interior influence the behaviour of human beings at home, it may be just the thing to act as the framework of breaking down these taboos Kamasutra has been regarded as one of the first of its kind, since its creation around 400BC-AD 2001, an explicit and highly literary sex manual textbook2, making it one of the oldest surviving texts of ancient Indian history according to renowned list, the 100 Books That Changed the World3.
This seven part series hopes to open your mind,
and allow you to reframe ideas you may have once had about the Kamasutra written by Vātsyāyana, we will also discuss the much anticipated sexual positions, and how they can have similar form to the built environment surrounding us. At first glance, the main visible connection between the legendary Kamasutra book and the vast industry of Architecture is what they can teach us about living.,

Structure of Attraction
At the top of bookshelves around peoples homes across the world, a certain shame is placed on being caught with the Kamasutra This statement by an adolescent girl in Vikram
Chandra’s story, “Kama,” rings true: “Sister Cannina didn’t want to tell us. It’s the Kama Sutra, which she says isn’t in the library. But Gisela’s parents have a copy which they think is hidden away on the top of their shelf. We looked it up there.” And the adult to whom she tells this says, “You put that book back where you found it. And don’t read any more.”
Outside of India, the part of the Kamasutra
describing the positions may have been the bestthumbed passage in previous ages of sexual censorship, but nowadays, when sexually explicit novels, films, and instruction manuals are available everywhere, that part is the least useful in terms of learning about life.
CENSORED
HATTAN
Even reading the Kama Sutra, in a fine
new translation, feels like a guilty pleasure. In the mid-60s, the Kama Sutra was, along with The Perfumed Garden and Venus in Furs, considered licentious and filthy, the very gateway to damnation. In the London suburbs in the early 60s, if a young man sought knowledge of sexual matters he had to traipse up to the West End to watch European films, and if particularly desperate during a tiresome evening might even be forced to turn to literature.
Many men and young teen boys owned copies of
contraband such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Lolita and other such serious stuff, along with Harold Robbins. The longer people avoid reading it, the more dreadful this famed carnival of desire and mayhem beccomes in your imagination. It turns out that Kama Sutra: A Guide to the Art of Pleasure is a compendium of advice about social and romantic behaviour, for wealthy young men about town, containing information about hygiene and sexual positions.

REDEEMING IT. Yet it is all but ignored as a serious work in its country of origin, it is sometimes taken as a matter of national shame rather than pride and in the rest of the world it is a source of amused amazement, not taken seriously at is known about the original author, the all, which is such a shame, Nbookot much itself is most commonly known in English through the Sir Richard Francis Burton translation, it’s worthy of much more. published privately in 1883 as The Kama Sutra of Vātsyāyana. A more moder translation can be seen through Wendy Doniger’s work as a distinguished Indologist and scholar of Sanskrit and Indian textual traditions. Her research and teaching interests revolve around Hinduism and mythology addressing themes such as death, dreams, evil, literature, law, gender and zoology.
PHALLIC STRUCTURE
Wendy Doniger, has been the biggest influence in
EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
helping understand the insights we can take from Kamasutra, not only this she has prepared a new translation with her colleague Sudhir Kahar, for Oxford World Classics revealing for the first time the text’s surprisingly modern ideas about gender and unexpectedly subtle stereotypes of feminine and masculine natures. Besides this it also reveals relatively liberal attitudes to women’s education and sexual freedom, and far more complex views of homosexual acts than are suggested by other texts of this period. It also makes us question Burton’s translation, and the influence of time on the translation.
When most people talk about the Kamasutra they discuss it in a joking manner, Doniger making her more contemporary translation widely available to the public in 2002, wanted to flip the script on this. Wanting to keep her translation modern, and to hopefully resurrect the Kamasutra as a serious book for sophisticated living for high society people, although most people think it is just about sexual positions, with very noticeable parallels to the ascetics of yoga, and bodies stretching, taking form and holding position.

The Bagua Map Applying feng shui principles to high-traffic areas
like your bedroom, living space, or home office can have positive and reverberating effects throughout your life. Feng shui is all about balancing different elements such as wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, and ying with yang. The bagua map (which translates to “eight trigrams” in Chinese) is an important tool for creating this kind of harmony and balance throughout a space.
By placing the Bagua Map over the structure
(home, building, office, room,) based on the position of the front door. The front door is located along the bottom line of the Bagua ( Front Left, Front Middle, Front Right) and will be positioned in one of the lower guas; Knowledge & Self Cultivation, Career or Travel & Helpful People.

SHAPE AND FORM.
Curvature Hidden at the top of bookshelves around peo-
ples homes across the world, a certain shame is placed on being caught with the book on display, the topic of sex being shameful has always made reading Kamasutra as a guilty, ironic little pleasure.
This statement by an adolescent girl in Vikram
Chandra’s story, “Kama,” rings true: “Sister Cannina didn’t want to tell us. It’s the Kama Sutra, which she says isn’t in the library. But Gisela’s parents have a copy which they think is hidden away on the top of their shelf. We looked it up there.” And the adult to whom she tells this says, “You put that book back where you found it. And don’t read any more.”
Outside of India, the part of the Kamasutra
describing the positions may have been the best-thumbed passage in previous ages of sexual censorship, but nowadays, when sexually explicit novels, films, and instruction manuals are available everywhere, that part is the least useful in terms of learning.

Not much is known about the original author, the
book itself is most commonly known in English through the Sir Richard Francis Burton translation, published privately in 1883 as The Kama Sutra of Vātsyāyana.
Wendy Doniger, has been the biggest influence in helping understand the insights we can take from Kamasutra, not only this she has prepared a new translation with her colleague Sudhir Kahar, for Oxford World Classics revealing for the first time the text’s surprisingly modern ideas about gender and unexpectedly subtle stereotypes of feminine and masculine natures.
In her book Redeeming the Kamasutra, Doniger
discusses the many ways Kamasutra has been taken a little too lightly, with reviews of the book being titled “Assume the Position” or “Position Impossible”, and even a pocket sized version for quick access to positions. Doniger strived to demonstrate the possibilities of allowing minds to open to accept the book much more than just for its sexual positions, this book hopes to give readers an opportunity to potentially see the world differently, taking what we know of Kamasutra and in turn seeing these ideas and possibilities of living a more sensual life, surround us in our everyday built environments.

SEXUAL POSITIONS
Sexual Guilt The “walk of shame” is a Sunday morning ritual
on college campuses (and sometimes beyond) across the United States: young women, hair matted and still in last night’s skirt and heels, trudge home post-hook-up. It’s a uniquely female ritual, and the term itself evokes a singularly female image.
While men also have to go home after sex, often
disheveled and exhausted, there’s no shame attached to their commute. In a culture that imbues sexual activity in women with shame and judgment while applauding sexual prolificacy in men, it will surprise no one that women are more likely than men to report regretting sexual encounters. But according to a new study, it’s not cultural views of female sexuality that saddle women with regret; it is evolution.

Complicated Beings In reality, our emotional and psychological
responses to interactions with other human beings are shaped by culture and socialization at least as much as biology. But as sexual mores continue to shift – perhaps more rapidly than many folks are comfortable with – it’s comforting to believe that some evolutionary fact underlies our unease.
Human sexual expression has long been widely
variable, and social institutions have struggled to reign it in through a variety of mechanisms (outlawing same-sex relationships or premarital sex; valorizing female chastity and reproduction within marriage) for a variety of reasons (economic stability based on a nuclear family model; continuance of male social, political and economic dominance).
We are complicated animals, and even as we
study our own motivations and feelings, we are operating within a set of cultural assumptions and values that – being thickly swaddled in them – we cannot fully see. Which helps psychologists who fancy themselves evolution experts to conclude that their own personal preferences, or the current norms of their culture, are universal and explicable by evolution alone.
As cultural norms change, so do sexual behaviors and our responses to them. A recent UK survey found that more women than ever before have had same-sex sexual experiences – four times as many women as two decades ago. And while the vast majority of respondents had sex before marriage, majorities nonetheless said sex before marriage was wrong. That disconnect between a cultural ideal – that sex is best within the confines of marriage – and the biological and social reality – that human beings physically desire sex and that we have had sex outside of the confines of marriage for all of human history – is perhaps a better explanation of any attendant negative emotions attached to premarital sex than an evolutionary guessing game.
